not interesting. topic is fairly open and new to the field. she does show interest in the topic but contradicts herself a lot. old spacey hippy who is disorganized and very scattered-brained.. looks like ms chokesondick from south park in hippy rags.. doesn't wear a bra
sgreed. nice lady, very scatterbrained and unorganized.
this was not her strong area and didn't get much out of the class
scatter brained. essay questions on tests. also not helpful with "nonschool" questions, beieves her opinion on a piece is the only valid one at times
bring a pillow and some asprin... this woman sucks
She is ****ing amazing. I love this lady to the max! Diss on Jane and you get the beat down.

i would not recommend rehl. very boring and disorganized. managed to make the topic more boring than i ever thought it would be. not to mention the book was poorly xeroxed pages that were illegible. not worth $70.

Do not take this fuccin class with Rehl the Nail, if you do take this class then your ass is gonna fail...not only are you gonna fail youre gonna fail with flying colors. the book is written in gibberish and the teaches gibberish, so your test will look like gibberish.

anoying as hell. goes from monotone to high pitched and jumps around. Half the class is uh's and review. snorefest. she doesn't steer from the book, or give out and good info. the book is boring too. weird on test grading
direct quote from a friend of mine on how she grades her tests: we didn't put who made it, when it was made, where it is, who was the first person to walk into it, what is the most amount of people to be in it at one time, how many friends does jane rehl have (she can be rediculous when it comes to grading)

monotone voice and omg...annoying. i hated going to that class
didn't think she was too bad, I learned some things
this teacher is ridiculously picky and never allowed imput from any students. She was also extremely rude and kept teaching well over class time.
i had to go to the hospital once and ended up missing a test, i told her and brought in the documents and she made this big deal and didnt want to let me take the test-i pitched a fit but she was really mean about it all ... if you no whats good for you avoid her
Extremely intelligent teacher, and passionate about the subject. She has personal slides of some of the buildings and sculpture covered, which was pretty cool. Lots of memorization required. She offers two choices for the test essays: a formal critique, or a sort of creative narrative. Have fun with the essay and choose the second option!
I chose to take Rehl because I was excited about Art History and I'd heard that she was very "passionate". However, she is quite annoying and extremely nitpicky. I don't understand what she is looking for on the test essays or the class papers in general. She is also very rude and talks through break and past class time. And? BAD JOKES.

well she is crazy and passonite i would fall asleep and when i woke up she would still be talking about the same thing her tests are supper hard you have to memorize every detail about 40 pieces and she only tests you on 15 and with different views than what you know and she goes off on tangents ALOT reading the book is easier than listening
This teacher is the worst example of a "college professor" I had a 4.0 until i took her class. Very boring, rants about everything. Only her view is right. Horrible with teaching, she just lists things then rants. And she wears the same outfit every day. Do not take. I have to drop out to keep my GPA at a 4.0. working your ass off wont help!
She has no clear interest in helping students. She is VERY passionate, which is good, but just because you are passionate doesn't mean you should teach! Do not take her, not even if you are an over achiever! She will cause you mental break downs!
Great teacher, but definitely challenging. I found the challenge enjoyable. If you want an easy A, don't take her, but if you are annoyed at what a joke academics are here and you want a challenge, she is great fun! I really learned a lot in her class and I only studied a few hours for each exam and still got B's. She tells you what to study.
I took her for Ethnographic Art. She was tough and had high expectations. There was a lot of reading. Overall, the class was incredibly informative. I can understand why a non art history person would struggle with her class, but she is really intelligent and engaging. Take her if you like to think and you don't mind working hard.
Very informative, very expressive. This professor is what I wish all my professors would be. She never grades on a curve, always provides more information than is required. Your grade in the class is based entirely on how much effort you put in. She follows the syllabus to the letter. never slacks off, expects the same of students.
Very DIFFICULT.
Her tests are impossible. Even if you studied for weeks you'd fail. If you need an A don't take her. She has no clue on how to dress, to deal with social situations or to do her job. She rants about things she shouldn't like politics & religion and makes sexual references about statues in class. Oh and she is scary as hell to look at. I HATED her.
She love to fail students. She grades papers based on all the papers she has ever read from all the students she has ever tought, these are her words. Compared to all of the other art history profesors she is grading way to extreme compared to the rest of her department. I know a number of students that have studied for weeks and still fail!
Horrid teacher, she was cruel and lectures for the whole class. She yells if you yawn, or move around. Her tests are VERY hard. My girlfriend was actually kicked out of the school due to her class. I barley scrapped by and studied for each exam. Exams are very hard and she makes you memorize 30 artists and puts 4 on her exams. DO NOT TAKE HER
I enjoy being challenged in class by an eccentric teacher--it stimulates me and pushes me to be a better student. That being said, this class was just too much. The amount of material covered in this class is plentiful on its own, but Professor Rehl went above and beyond the syllabus. I took lots of notes, studied for every exam, and spent a week o
Let's just say if you are an art history major or just plain love art history then Jane Rehl is a good choice. If you are not good at taking notes, or doing essays, then this class if not for you. If you take her expect to spend a great deal of time studying before exams.
Jane Rehl is a feminist who is very opinionated. She does not understand that there are multiple teaching methods and teaches the strictest form of memorization there is. There is far too much information and no help offered to receive a decent grade. The help offered is in the form of a tutor, she is not willing to answer questions.
Has no business teaching an intro class. She doesn't care about anything you have to say and grades super hard. Do yourself a favor and don't take this womans class for the love of god. Why she is still teaching at scad is a mystery to me
Although she was tough, I actually learned a lot. It definitely helped me out in my later classes. I failed my first test but got B's on the next two because I learned how to memorize. As long as you take thorough notes, you will be ok.
If you put in the work you'll get a good grade.
like a high school teacher teaching college seniors. no leaving class without asking, unless you want to get ****ed at for 5 minutes. oh, breaks are ten minutes, if you late, be prepared. it is rare that 70% of her class pass with an a or b. a lot a lot of work. study study study. she has a smart attitude that is very hard to deal with.
She doesn't care if you fail. Sort of like she wants you to take survey 1 again just for fun. It's so so so boring.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! She is monotonous, boring, and very uneasy. She will yell at you about how you will fail future classes, for yawning too loud. She grades essays like its a job. Trivial inaccuracies [ saying its humid in a dark corridor in the desert] in the creative writing= points off. Do not take her, she will fail you.
Get out, get out, get out! Her tests are CRAZY. She treats her class as if it's your only class. She treats the test as if your an Architectural History major. Good luck. Oh yeah, and don't EVER let her catch you yawning.
GET OUT NOW, SHE WILL DESTROY YOU. She gives WAY too much information to possibly memorize and will not tell you what you need to know specifically. She is obsessed with essays, and will ask for creativity, but hates anything that isn't cut and dried facts. She is impossible to please and normally fails over 3 fourths of the class. DON'T DO IT.
really clear on what she wants in assignments. talks for ALL of class. prepare to study cause she expects you to know everything in depth despite being completely disengaged from the students. if you like art history, go for it just make sure its not an 8 am class..
She was the worst professor I've ever had. I studied hard, took notes, actively took part in class discussions (which were her really yelling at us) and I still came out with a C. Asked for help, and told I should find a tutor. Even the tutor was confused with her work! There's no homework but readings- and the readings don't even help you on exams
I almost took this professor and am SO GLAD I didn't. I asked her for help on a paper for another class and she almost refused to help me for not addressing her as "Doctor." I didn't believe the stories at first but this woman is extremely rude and clearly insane.
She's horrible. Be prepared to not learn anything. She EXTREMELY disorganized and has no clue what she is teaching. I had her for ethnographic art and she could not answer hardly any questions students would ask. She would have to look get back to them later, if she remembered. Very scatter brained and out there... STAY AWAY!!!
she's SUPER HARD!but she has passion in what she's teaching and she knows everything!it was a hard time taking her class but I enjoyed it coz I learned A LOT n she made me appreciate art history. She talks through whole class n every second is important, lots of writing and memorization. worth to take it if u can handle it!she helps if u work hard!
this woman is straight up evil.. she will not help you. if you miss an exam, she won't let you make it up.. not even for serious personal reasons. she will not repeat herself. she grades randomly.. she knows what shes talking about for the most part.. but she is not TEACHING, and if you don't & you don't understand you can "Figure it out yourself."
I worked extremely hard each class. Did all of the reading, took at least five pages per class of notes, and studied for hours, only to get C's on my exams. She is incredibly unhelpful and will not answer any of your questions, she will only tell you that you need tutoring and there is nothing she could do to help you. No. Just. No.
I think she'd be a pretty cool person to hang out with OUTSIDE of class, but this woman simply should not be teaching an entry level course. Transfer immediately.
She was pretty entertaining as a person, if you are prepared to take really off-color jokes and insults, and I actually appreciated her passion for the class. I feel like I learned a ton. However, it was just frusterating that I couldn't come to her with questions, and she was never understanding of anyone's special circumstances.
The first time I sat in her class she already started flirting with one of the female students in a subtle manner. Not only that but her helpfulness or lack thereof is horrendous. I used to like Art History but thanks to this professor I hate it.
I tried to go in with an open mind to this class. After studying literally FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT and making a D, I'll let you be the judge of it. I legitimately believed I would be prepared for any question she asked..even felt confident after taking the exam. Her grading is outrageous and unfair. She is condescending and hypocritical about everything
Professor Rehl is an intense professor. You will learn an incredible amount from her. Her grading is unforgiving for tests and essays. Her tests consist of excessive memorization and 3+ more essays each. I would only recommend her if you were to major in Art History. Otherwise, find a better professor for your money. Nobody needs that stress.
RUN AWAY AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. She is the worst professor/ teacher I have ever come across. She asks you to memorize more than any human being can, asks for you to write spotless papers with no help whatsoever, and hands out failing grades like it's her job. She told me she cared more about her cat dying than her own father. GET OUT NOW.
THIS WOMAN DOES NOT TEACH. She handed me my paper back with annotations that were simply cruel. She crossed out my work with a huge "X" and just wrote NO. Then, on later pages, she wrote over my work "This Is Art History". The woman does not teach. She is the demon spawn.
So caught up in her own infinite knowledge she expects students to catch on to deep subject matter in a matter of days...very hateful attitude...wanted to enjoy this class but she made it impossible
This is the toughest professor I have ever come across. She wants students to memorize nearly impossible amounts of info and acts annoyed if students ask questions and offers little to no help. You need to read all of the reading assignments and study the notes each day after class to maintain a decent grade. But if you aren't a hard worker get ou
So here's the good: Very passionate and knowledgeable about art history. Bad: Sensed a sort of "superiority" aura. Requires you to memorize(the worst way to teach imo) an obscene amount of information. Extremely boring delivery. I would highly recommend NOT taking her unless you are an art history major and/or masochistic. Save your Sanity.
This professor is ridiculous. She does not teach in a manner that allows every student to understand. If you're an art history major then you may appreciate the amount of reading and memorization but if not definitely do NOT take her class. She is the worst prof I have ever had.
Jane is one of the hardest professors I've ever experienced.... but she knows what she's talking about. Take her advice. She really isn't crazy. I tried to do things my own way and made a D on the first test. I listened to her and made an A on the next two and made an A in the class overall. She is a great professor. Challenging, but great.
AMAZING. Professor Rehl's class is hands down my most memorable and satisfying course. Her Ethnographic Art class is OUTSTANDING. Yes, its a lot of information and YES, her tests are hard, but it is SO rewarding. I was not an art history major but if you make the effort to really ingest the subject matter, you'll benefit from it immensely in life.
ok, so i read the previous reviews and that whole thing about being an art history major to be interested.... NOT TRUE!!! i was an art history major (alumi now) and this was THE worst class i took. she is crazy, very scattered and not helpful. i received an "A" but it was earned through self teaching. take some other elective Art History majors!
It's true, the class is not easy, but she's an excellent teacher and if you actually LISTEN to her you will learn a lot and do well. I normally don't feel I learn or care much in ArtH courses but Rehl really makes you work and you actually learn.
Well I'll be honest, I thought this would be an interesting class, and the material is extremely riveting. However Jane Rehl is an incredibly difficult teacher; no late work, evil snickers, and she will hold her PHD over your head. And that's her I'n a good mood. Yes she knows what she is talking about, but she is a firm believer In elitism. Avoid
I was actually excited for art history, until I got to this class. Everyday you go in and do the same routine. There is no variety in her teaching and she doesn't make the class fun at all. She is sometimes rude and laughs at her own jokes, and when you ask her a question, she makes you feel stupid. One of most frustrating classes I have ev
She is the only Professor that I didn't like in this college. When I first met her, I thought her class would be fun. I was absolutely wrong. I felt asleep a couple of times, the material is good, but the way she explains it makes you feel uninterested. I got an A, but just because I am used to study big, boring books.
no matter how hard I tried, I could never get over a C which is rare for me. she said to my face I never took notes where I had actually took over 150 pages during the semester, one of the strictest graders ive ever seen, in my opinion a waste of time, money, & education, all you get out of it are terrible grades, stress, and loss of sleep and time
These comments on this site are not lying to you. She really is that bad. Drop the class if you can. The Art History Major in my class ended up with a B-, which was one of the highest scores.
Okay so, I got a C in her class and I struggled but her character really isn't so bad especially when she's not in her teaching mode
Harsh Grader. Very Knowledgeable. I definitely learned a lot. I wouldn't take her again. I like her better as a person than a teacher.
JANE is AWESOME. I am in my second class with her; she is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material I almost want to switch majors. She puts all the class info on BB and most reading material. She is very blunt, but she'll make all other history courses a breeze. She gives assignments in stages so you can make corrections. Take her!!
If you are not willing to work REALLY hard or you think this class will be easy... DROP IT. In my opinion she's not a good teacher and she should not be teaching an entry level course to art history. I emailed her a question about the final exam simply asking on some clarity over a certain piece of art and she replied "you can answer this yourself"
Prof. Rehl is an extremely knowledgable person and you will definitely learn a lot in her class. However, that is not to say that it is easy at ALL. Her class was one of the most difficult I have ever taken, and I love history. Show up to every class and start memorizing artworks as soon as you learn them. If you work really hard, it's rewarding.
I had her for Survey I and it was by far the hardest class I have ever taken at SCAD. She makes you work your butt off and makes future classes seem so easy. She demands crystal clear knowledge of content and lots of reading. If you have it in you, take her, it'll be worth it in the end. If you're lazy and just looking for an easy A, don't take her
I don't know how I got an A, I try to repress memories of this quarter. It was not fun, Rehl really wants her students to care as much about art history as she does, but that is asking a lot. This class almost broke my spirits.
the worst teacher in scad ever! so hard and the things you have to remember are three times more than other arth calss!!!!!!! don't take her!!!
If art history is your "thing" and you have tons of time, this is a good class. If not, don't take it. Rehl is very strict and thinks your life revolves around art history. She constantly yells at students about not reading/taking notes. Part of participation is answering questions, yet she always rebukes students & disrespectfully laughs at them.
The most boringly erratic "professor" in any class. It's like she gets off on giving her students impossible to remember scenarios while expecting you to memorize every single minute detail. Teaching style is messy and all over the place.
Rehl's class is challenging, but her tests are designed to help you remember what you learned. Her expectations are very high, but it's better than allowing us to slack off. If you LISTEN to what she says and READ the textbook, you can pass her class easily. If you can adjust yourself to her expectations, you'll be fine. :)
I took her class last year and barely got a 92 and was actually the only A in her classes. I made flash cards and it's why I passed. She always said that we were behind schedule in lectures and by week 6 encouraged students to get the D, by the final 9 kids had dropped out from 30 and I'm not sure if everyone passed. Good luck if you have her.
Just don't
This class is a challenge but you can get an A as long as you study the material and take good notes in class. It is a lot of information. I actually never read the textbook and I made a C on my first exam and A's on the last two. You actually have to pay attention and study twice as hard if you don't. If you take Rehl and pass anything is possible
There is a lot of information. Rather than speaking about ideas, visual themes or gesture, Jane speaks about factual detail. Testing: The Name of the Artist, title of the piece, the material, dates, location and additional commentary. While she is a knowledgable individual I would strongly caution taking her course. A poor transfer of knowledge.
Uninterested in helping anyone. She is rude and hates it even if you stand up to use the bathroom in her lectures. She has no understanding and gives no slack to any students. Do not take. Even if you're an art history major, there are way better professors other than her.
She is erratic and gives no hard copy of most of the information you need to know for the tests. She doesn't test from the book so if you miss class, you're pretty much not going to pass. I strongly advise STAYING AWAY.
just telling you, don't do it... just don't... look away and continue onto another professor. just no, i can't even truly say anything good...
I am an A student. Jane made it amazingly difficult to earn merely a B in the class. If you work your tail off you can earn above a C however it will be hell.
As someone who enjoys art history, I enjoyed Professor Rehl's lectures. She teaches in a way that is both interesting and entertaining. However, graded assignments are an entirely different story. You'd better take notes on literally EVERYTHING she says in class - it could be on the test. Don't bother with the textbook. Take her with caution.
Prof Rehl, though knowledgable, is not a great at communicating or teaching art history clearly. Tests are incredibly difficult, focused more on dates & culture facts than the significance of the art. Questions are discouraged & there isnt a very helpful learning environment. I love art history & I feel that I didn't learn anything in this class.
Dr. Rehl is wonderful. She grades based on improvement though out the course instead of averaging your test scores. She gives an in-depth corse that is still interesting evan if you have already taken art history before. She is very welcoming and open to answer any question as long as you make the effort. I would defiantly take her again.
We have to memorize the name, culture, period, date, location, artist, and the why and how of at least 50 artifacts per test. It is ridiculous. If you zone out for a few minutes you will not be able to catch up. I am normally an A- average student and I struggled to get an C in this class.
everytime im in class i feel like im dying inside. kinda feel like the lectures are just an endless rambling and never reach a solid point. damn near impossible to take effective notes because of that. If your still in the timeframe to get your money back drop it
Rehl is a horrible professor who talks for three hours non-stop. Shes always flaunting around her PHD and is constantly misleading with the information. She says she'll tell us EXACTLY whats on the test but when she gives us the exam format, its still very vague. DO NOT take her class. Your GPA will lower from this class.
Run down for Rehl's class; get out if you can. If not, here's a guide, don't get up during class ever, record lectures, skim the book at the very least, take notes on everything, even what she says you don't need. Took her twice, in 100, 12 the class dropped by midterm. In 110 now and lost three in two weeks. Essays are are 75% of your exam grades
She is the most arrogant and rude teacher I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. Her quizzes could practically be considered a test with the amount of material you have to memorize. I'm a teacher's pet and most teachers love me but I hate her and wish I could punch her in the face. Need to go to the bathroom? You'll have to wait till break.
Horrible. DO NOT take her class. She holds her students after class is over, is really rude, and also super boring. Class is torture.
You literally have to study for hours on end and specific detail on all artwork. You have to study so much for only a few questions on the exams.
While she's an interesting professor, I would not recommend taking Rehl if you can help it. The amount of material she expects you to know is off the charts and I felt like her lectures were either too vague or really boring. Thankfully, not much homework and some of the quizzes were manageable but the exams were killer.
First things first: You NEED to have a strong work ethic for this class. There's a LOT of material you need to know for the tests and quizzes. Take notes on everything. Keep up on readings. Lectures are very cut and dry: she talks about notes, you take notes, which is the one major downside I have. She puts everything on BB - take advantage of that
Super harsh grading, long and uninspirational lectures, and lots of unnecessary memorization required. just dont take her.
Difficult professor and is very specific. Do not take her.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The material she expects you retain is ridiculous. Acts like art history is very easy and the class is just lazy when we don't know anything. Extremely hard and I wouldn't recommend it unless you want your g.p.a to drop.
Please do not take this professor. There is no reason for her to get upset with students for asking questions because the student "should have learned it the first time" or to wave her finger in a student's face over a topic discussion because her PhD was dominant over his opinion. Her pride will destroy so many good students. She's not worth it.
She is awesome! You will be pushed to learn a lot and if you put in the effort, you will benefit from this class. She has a lot of really great information to teach you so grow up and realize that college classes aren't meant to be easy. She is crystal clear on what she expects from you.
Unhelpful.
Honestly, for all the flaunting of her Very Important PHD, she doesn't even teach her own material with historical accuracy. She is incredibly condescending and harsh with her students, culturally insensitive and she assigns an overwhelming amount of material. If this is your first introduction to a college art history course, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Workload is way too much.
This professor is literally horrible. I dropped on the fourth class despite the loss of money because of how unreasonably she manages her class.
worst teacher I ever had the chance of meeting. Shes rude and mean and wont answer your question if she thinks its stupid. she thinks spelling mistakes are a personal crime against her. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. you will just end up dropping
Jane is the worst. I don't want to elaborate because it will give me PTSD. Don't take this class. It will ruin you.
If I had to chose between amputating my leg, and taking this professor again, I would chose the amputation. Her lectures are extremely long and boring, she shuts down any student who asks questions, and she makes you study so many unnecesary things. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Rehl was an amazing professor. I had her Fall 2014 as a first quarter freshman, and she really challenged me. I learned so much from her class, and am thankful to have had the opportunity. I will say, if you are not good at taking notes, brush up on that ASAP. Also, be prepared to memorize information - it may not seem fun, but it's important!
Jane Rehl is the worst teacher I have ever taken. She is rude and outright mean to students. Her lectures are long and uninspiring and do little to prepare you for the tests. The tests are unreasonable. You have to learn 80-100 5 part identifications to only be tested on 5. Her feedback is unreadable and asking her is not an option. DO NOT TAKE!
Expects you to regurgitate everything she lectures about. Taking good notes is key to passing her exams!
350 characters can't adequately describe how utterly awful this professor is, so I'll just leave you with this: if you value having a life outside of classwork, along with more than 3 hours of sleep a night, AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.
Two and a half hours twice a week of her drawn-out overly rehearsed lectures won't help you learn or pass the tests. Expect to read and be prepared to retain a lot of info. Don't interrupt class, not even to go to the bathroom or you will get reprimanded. She'll even scold you if you're reading the textbook during her lectures to follow along.
Do yourself a favor and do not take Rehl. Unfortauntely, I suffered throughout this course because I needed to follow my sequencing. No matter how hard I worked, I could never get higher than a B. I think ive had more breakdowns because of this class than any other class ive taken so far. Please, do yourself a favor and steer clear of her class.
The amount of information you have to study is insane. For one test we had to study like 80 pieces of art and know the period, artist, name, and the date. I barely passed with a C my freshman year and I love history this made me dislike it a lot. Wouldn't suggest taking her if your not an art history major
