this course is so time consuming. regardless to how well you do on a test you have to do all the homework and go to all the classes to keep the grade. tutoring zone will be your savior
sleeping is the only way not to waste time in this class
The class is very hard, very uninteresting, and the teacher goes very fast. The curve is very big, but thats the truth.
Helpful. Very nice teacher. Class is insanely easy.
she is so boring, and she makes the tests alot harder than they should be
The class wasn't hard. You need to go to the lectures to understand though. The notes & lectures were really clear. If you get a good TA, you'll be fine.
She's not bad. She tells you in class exactly what type of questions will be on the tests. It's not hard; just go to classes and do the homework and it will actually not be too bad. It's calc, though, and it's not meant to be easy.
Lectures are very boring, but go b/c she gives participation points randomly. Use the old tests to study before exams. If you have to take this class its not too bad overall.
i often fell asleep in the lectures, but overall it's a decent class. but don't take calc if you don't have to. that should be an understood fact of life. nice person for this class.
If you go to lecture and just fill in the examples, the tests are not that bad. Her tests follow her review exactly, so as long as you can do those, you should have no problem whatsoever.
Mrs. Smith is actually a very nice woman and the class isn't too terribly awful. The tests can be tricky, but having an easy TA really helps. This class definitely isn't exciting but if you have to take it for your major, you'll survive.
Nice lady - but what she teaches and what she tests on are two different things... Be prepared for a ton of word problems on the test - even though you see very few word problems in class. Go to class- and IF AT ALL POSSIBLE get a TA that speaks English as a first language...
Her test are written to "throw" students off not to assess their understaning of the material.
Extremely difficult class. Bordering on the impossible, for me at least. She always says that "the students could write the tests cuz they know what will be on it" but that couldn't be further from the truth. Tests were really tricky and difficult. She's nice but the class sucked.
She doesn't deserve the bad rap she gets, she's really nice, motherly. It's not her fault the material is hard for people. I told AP calc. in highschool and still had to study it's not her it's the material, study and DO THE HOMEWORK it gets you free-be points and it helps a lot for tests i got an A
The questions on the test may be predictable on content, but they will undoubtedly be the hardest of their type that you have seen on any homework or quiz.Grading scale makes the class manageable however-quite a few fluff points and the final was very straightforward and easier than the other tests.
Very bland material, and she does a pretty bland job of explaining it. She also tries to put 75 percent of the lecture material in the last 5 percent of class. Going to class and doing the homework should be an easy b.
boring puts everything on projector
EXTREMELY easy class. I only needed a 30% on the final to get an A in the class and I studied very very very little for this class and I only got a 1 on my AP Calc exam. This class is very easy. What can I say...probably the easiest business critical tracking class. If only my other classes went like this. Easier than Micro even.
Nice lady, but this class desperately needs to be structured better. Why can't this be a tv class so that students can view if they miss a day or review if they dont understand the first time around? They do it for stats and should do it for this class. Ridiculous!
This class was def not easy for me. **** helped me out the most with the reviews and stuff( Mrs Smiths hates them lol), and I ended up passing with a C, but w/e, I still passed!

she made it hard, not helpful at all
do not take her
This lady could not do simple arithmetic half the time. She made this class a lot more difficult than it needed to be and she wasn't approachable in my opinion. If you have to take this class, take it with a different teacher!
She is kinda werid, makes lots of mistakes while doing problems infront of the class. Makes things harder than they really are.
She is a super nice lady. However, she isn't that great when it comes to teaching the material. It may be because this is her first year, (but still no good). Go to TZ. Helped me so much. Still go to class so you have a basic idea of what's going on. Another thing that makes this classs difficult is a small pt. scale. Little diff between an A & C.
Really nice lady and appears to try and be helpful, however, has difficulty making her point, is late to update website, skips examples in class and SPEEDS through the material.
So she does make a few mistakes in class but who doesn't? She's a really nice person and as long as you're not an idiot you can pass her tests. People blame her when they don't pass, but those are the people who don't come to class or study, so stop complaining! I did ok by coming to class, doing the homework and studying.
Really nice lady, but sometimes rushes through the problems.
Not with this teacher It is a no passing zone
I could do much better if she was just a little caring
Worst teacher at explaining math ever!
she moves her hands, writes on the board but she did not seem to know what she is doing and neither did I...not helping at all
I could learn more math watching flies mate. this woman should retire or go make cupcakes. she goes over her notes and calls that teaching
I'm sorry, she may be a very nice lady, but Jane Smith cannot teach precalculus. At all.

I went to the first 5 lectures or so, and I couldn't go after that. She was uninterested in students and completely oblivious to the class in front of her. She couldn't teach the subject and would have made a better calc 2 teacher- she knew the stuff, she just could not teach it. At all.
please make her stop "teaching" somebody help us please
If you are good in Math, you can catch on, but if not she goes really fast!!
Took her for Calc. I in the spring of 2005. If you are a math head or have an analytical mind (wich I am/do) you will do fine. STUDY the notes, go to TZ, and complete the easy homework assignments and you will definately pass! She does move fast but of course this is subjective. An 'A' may not be attainable (just a warning for you dorks with a 4.0)
She is one of those teachers that is so on her high horse, she can't come back down to the precal level. I have never had to study for math a day in my life, and I had to BUST my butt for this class. I ended up getting an A, but only because my TA was soooo helpful!
The class itself isn't too hard. If you just attend lectures, do the practice tests, and go to TZ you'll do fine. The teacher is horrible though. She treats you like you are in elementary school again. She wastes so much time in class, goes way too slow, and always runs 5-10 minutes over.
HORRIBLE teacher!! The class itself isn't that hard but she needs to go back to teaching Kindergarden!!! Seriously!!
Has a horrible teaching style. She goes way too slow and pauses for 10 minutes after she asks a question and loses people's attention.
I don't know what people's problems with her were... she is a very sweet professor and the material was very easy. She is patient and if you go to her office hours, is more than happy to help you. She does seem like a kindergarten teacher, but that's just her own personality. Good teacher overall and easy class with easy tests-I never did the HW.
she's a nice lady. although i understood the material (c'mon, its like stuff we learned in middle/highschool) A LOT of people had problems in her class. I'm a little bitter because i missed an A by 6 points but she's not that bad. math isn't really easy, but go to lecture, read the book, and do the extra credits!3 tests no curves! do the homework!
She is tough but she is very nice and she will help you out whenever she can. I reccommend just going to **** and then you should do fine. Her lectures are boring and hard to follow, but TZ will straighten everything out before the test. The tests are hard, so do the extra credit!
She is a very nice PERSON. End of story. Her teaching style is boring, the class is ridiculously difficult for being precalculus and the work amount is ridiculous. do not take this course unless you have to.
This is not a good professor. I took precalc in high school and aced it. So, I knew what she was talking about, but if you have never taken it, dont take this class. She is very confusing and flies over material. She treats you like youre 4. Use your TA over her. My roommate used Turtoring Zone and says it REALLY helped her.
She does class participation points sometimes in lecture. Very sweet lady, but not a very good teacher. I go to lecture to get the pts. It's best you go to **** or the sup instruction! Michael Underwood is kickass! or hope you get a good TA
Very nice and extremely helpful. This is a tough class however, if you do the work, attend lecture and get average drades on the tests and final you will end up with a favoable grade. P.S. **** helps.
class sucks, shes a horrible teacher, always showed up a few minutes late to class and always went over her time making me late to another class. the material should be easy, most of it is algebra but for some reason she has a way of making it seem more difficult than it should be. Go to your TA, they make that class tolerable, grading scale is wac
She's a sweet lady who doesnt know how to teach. She gives class participation points in lecture so its good if you go to class. Every point counts! She shows to class late and does problems until the last second of class, often confusing you. Make sure u talk to your TA they really help.
She doesnt really know how too teach but the class is an easy A for those who love the subject of math
She's very sweet i might even say a pushover and trust me i'm really dumb when it comes to math but her class is pretty easy if you do the h.w, ask questions in discussion, do
Fairly easy overall. Lectures are very boring -- you will fall asleep at least once during the semester. She is a nice lady, but always tries to keep you for extra time. Online homework is easy but inconvienent.
i think the class was pretty easy. it would have helped me had i not slept through discussion classes, but so long as u attend all discussion classes, and do all homework assignments, you schould be okay.also, attend lecture, the participation points will help you. and she goes over all exam material the class before the exam, so that helps
Tries to be helpful but I found the class to be hard. The class moves kinda fast and she tries to use every sec (making me late for the next class). Also she remembers to take attendance the last 2 min of class and you have to solve a prob LOTS of hw, book work and online hw. If you are not a math person: be careful you can fall behind easily.
Not too bad of a class, I didn't get an A on any of the tests and still got an A in the class. She always goes over the alotted class time which is annoying and she spends a good portion of the time shhing the class, but other than that it's not too bad
She didn't understand the math she was teaching and would frequently make mistakes while teaching. She taught WAY too fast.
Jane was one of the best math teachers I've had.Her notes are clearly laid out and really useful when in lecture cause write everything down. If you do the review sheets she gives, the tests are super easy and theres usually a bonus question. The HW was a bit much at times but and easy way to get points during discussion.
UGH!!! I HATED this class with a PASSION!!! If you are weak in math Jane Smith will EAT YOU ALIVE! Smith is an OKAY person...but she SUCKS at teaching! Seriously if you have to take precalc save yourself the time and money and try to do at a community college. For those of you who swallow your pride and take her class...your in my prayers.
I had her over the summer for Survey of Calc 1. This was the second time I had to take the class. She was much more helpful then the previous teacher. Very sweet lady. The class can be tricky. Make sure to be in class and do the review sheets/old tests and you should come out ahead.
Great teacher! Def. need to go to class and buy the notes. She goes pretty slow and goes over some unneeded and redundant material but its useful at the end. The tests werent too bad, but make sure to do the hw and do good on the quizes!
Survey of Calc 1 is required by business majors so there's not a way around it. Class is pretty boring because its math. I did average on the first two tests but Tutoring Zone was a great help and boosted my test grade.
Survey of Calc 1 is required by business majors so there's not a way around it. Class is pretty boring because its math. I did average on the first two tests but Tutoring Zone was a great help and boosted my test grade.
SHe is the best math teacher ever. everyone is probably just complaining becuase they dont do the work. I did horrible in calc in high school and this class was my easiest A this semester. Extremely fair grading policy, just do all the homework and practice tests.
For anybody who says this class is difficult they tried to slack their way through this class. Pretty boring in class, voice quite monotonous, but good teacher overall. I got a B+ barely doing any work, do the online hw (can take as many times as possible) and do the weekly hw and you'll breeze through this class.
Boring lectures ... it is math and there is no way of making it interesting. Take notes, review them and do practice problems to study for tests. The only way to study for math exams are to practice the problems.
Overall a good professor. Made expectations very clear. Taught pretty well, but made things more complicated than necessary. Sessions with TA help a lot. Do the online HW, she does take participation points occassionally in class, so make sure you go. The best bet to do well in the class is DO THE REVIEWS!! Book HW doesnt help at all.
Feared taking calc for a long time (required by business college) but Janie Smith made it relatively painless for me. Went to Broward Teaching Center for reviews & homework help. Slept through boring lectures but had a great discussion TA, Mike Pensky. Tests are noncumulative except for final. Loads of extra credit & in-class assignment points.
She's really nice, and goes over most of the crucial material in class, but will often skip over entire sections that you will see on exams. Exams are pretty straight forward if you studied and if you did the practice exams (course pack and Broward Hall versions). TZ is helpful. Missed a perfect score by 3 points (there's plenty of extra credit!!).
she says function and relationship weird. other than that shes alright.
huge ****, makes tests way too hard and instructs the useless ta's to make the weekly quizzes very challenging. makes you do book homework usually 60problems every week. some extra credit, not enough to matter.
hard material
Overall a pretty easy class. Replies to her emails within a day if you have questions. Couldve easily gotten an A if I hadnt given up after getting an A on the 1st exam, instead ended up with a B+ thanks to an easy final exam (thanks TZ). Go to class to get participation points/extra credit, TA was awesome, easy quizzes. Can have bad handwriting.
Professer Smith was great overall, albeit she made many elementary mistakes daily. I had never had calculus before and thought this course was a breeze. Easy A! You can drop your lowest test. This was great for me since I skipped a whole week of school for my second spring break!
Not a bad class, you just need to keep up with it. go to tutoring zone for every test and you will do well. she hasnt changed her exams in like 9 years so they know EXACTLY what will be on them
She's really not that bad of a teacher. I've had terrible math teachers in the past, so Jane was...fairly decent.I happen to suck at Math, so of course i thought the tests were kind of difficult. She always ran out of time and kept us after class.
Great math professor! Explains everything you need to know to excel on the tests in class. No need for TZ! Just do the book assignments, go to class, and do all of the practice exams. You can def. get an "A" in this course if you take it with her. I can't wait to take another math class with her.
Great professor, like stated below.
She's the best math teacher you'll find at UF. Not an easy class, do the little things like online homework and do well on quizzes and you'll be fine.
It's not a bad class, just practically impossible to focus. I wish that she would include the students more because it would keep me more interested. I heard the other professor is more interesting and is actually pretty humorous. Anyways, J (what I call her in my fantasies) is pretty sexy for an older woman... we all agree.
Oh Jane, what can I say...She's very helpful outside of class. Always there if you need help. She is horrible at teaching it though. I took Calc AB in high school and passed with a 5. If I didn't have that prior knowledge of Calc, I probably would have failed the class. She assigns a crap-load of hw, most of which is repetitive.Try to not get her.
During lecture, she is confusing as hell. However, if you visit her during office hours she can be helpful. Tests are a pain and you'll end up hating multiple choice after her class. Attend lecture (for class participation points), go to TZ, and do webassign and you should do good.
fair but difficult
Oh Janey. If I didn't take calc AP and passed with a 5 in high school, I'd be failing the class. I had to go to my friends for help or try to remember what I learned in high school. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who has never taken calculus before. She made me hate calculus.
Overall, the class wasn't too bad, since I took AP Calculus in high school. Professor Smith was always willing to answer questions, which is nice, but the homework sometimes seemed a lot. If you didn't take calculus in high school, you will probably struggle in this class.
Wow, I haven't met anyone that hated students as much as Jane Smith seems to. She punishes you for attending lectures by constantly stopping to demand attention (even if the class is quiet). I have always loved math... Now I definitely don't. Smith will test you on the most minor exceptions to rules... Please, take someone else for Calc.
Jane just cant stop proving things. She will prove integration, trig identities and anything that can be proven. Besides that, she is pretty good. She is boring and SLOW! she is always behind. But her exams are very fair and they have extra credit. I did the old exams and studied a little and ended up with an A+.
Silly Jane! This woman is impossible! She spends an entire class period trying to do a problem from how many mistakes she makes. She goes on forever about limits and all her exam problems have es and lns in them, its ridiculous. I only got an A because I got a 5 in AP Cal, otherwise I would have failed miserably.
She is really nice and approachable. If u do her review sheets and don't get behind too much with ur homework, u will do fine. I got an A+ and took AP calc so that probably helped alot too. i didnt pay attn during class, but reviewd over my notes l8er and that helped. good luck! :)
Go to class even though teacher is slow. Do the homework. Go to TZ (Zach rocks!).
Crazy Jane! She's not the greatest teacher, but her class wasn't as hard as it probably could have been. The exams weren't too bad, but she always threw a few tricky ones in there which ended up bringing the grades down.
Technically, she wasn't my lecturer but since I didn't take AP Calc I really liked the fact that she went slow!! Prep for tests by going to TZ; Zach rocks! Go to Prof. Smith's OH if you still need help. She's very sweet, cares about you, AND WORKS WITH YOU; I had to re-schedule three exams b/c of strep and band concert conflicts. Take her!
Worst math teacher I have ever had. Can never catch her, doesn't make up her mind about make ups when clearly stated that I need to know in advance, always finishes lectures late, not understanding of any kind of absence, she should just retire, she's useless. Oh, and a terrible conveyor of mathematics.
Def one of the worst math teachers I've had, and only because she's so spacy! She makes everything seem so much harder than it is, and she makes mistakes like crazy. I get that she's only human but it's a little rediculous. Go to tutoring zone. Keep up with the homework.
A nice person and knows calc really well, goes in detail for explanation. If your like me who never had ap calc or anything of the sort in HS, then your screwed cuz this class is also almost as bad as chm when it comes to test. Not the best teacher, but not bad either. Solution, community college ;-)
She was not my Lecturer but she wrote the tests, which were tough. They were alot harder in spring than in Fall for some reason. But if you know how to do the problems *tutoring one" then you can pass the class. However she is really nice and gives ALOT of extra credit ie 2 5 point worksheets that you can get help on if you need it.
good prof
I took the class at 9:30 am while pledging a fraternity. Basically i would show up to lecture to copy everything and get attendance points. She can be difficult to keep up with and she makes numerous mistakes and will make you late to other classes. But I pulled an A. Just practice old exams and go to tutoringzone and your fine.
Sometimes rushes material and isnt as clear as she could be
Whatever sick individual claims that she is going too quickly has got it all wrong. The only time she rushes is when we run out of time in class and decides to teach an entire problem in the last minute left. She goes into unnecessary detail and now we are one or two lectures behind the other classes. But on the bright-side it's easy.
I was a math person until I took this class. I took AP Calculus in high school and I always loved math! But after this class I was traumatized! I ended up dropping the class because I was looking at a C in the class and I didn?t want to ruin my GPA?Horrible skips through ever example but worth going to class for the participation points.
I was terrible at math in high school (got C's all the time). Took calculus in high school (C+) and precalculus at UF (B+) and got an A+ in her class!!! Don't be fooled, the tests are difficult but very fair. Precalc at UF prepared me a lot for this class. She skips over some things in the notes and may go fast at times. Take the class seriously!
Before this class I loved math, and always got A's. In this class I got D's, had to drop it, because I didnt want my GPA to go down. She wasnt my professor but she wrote the exams that I took. The exams had always tricky questions that confused you. I went to TZ and did old exams, I thought I was going to pass it... but didnt. GOOD LUCK!
Easy class, moves too slowly through lectures though. Go to class for lecture participation points. Weekly quizzes in discussion class are usually simple. The exams are difficult but definitely passable, I got As on all but one. I would recommend her for a calc teacher.
Shes a slow lecturer and will put just about anyone except the die hard math fans to sleep. She also makes the worst tests, she often claims the student's could write them because the supposedly know the material so well. Nothing is farther from the truth, her tests are written to be tricky and fail all but the best students. Killed my love of math
She never finishes lectures and does not really prepare you for the tests, but with the help of TZ you can pass. Her tests are hard but are fair with bonus on each test. Overall, if you work for it you can get the A like I did.
She never really helped too much, she just made the subject a lot harder than it needs to be. However, her exams were fair, as the old exams were very similar. USE TUTORING ZONE FOR THIS COURSE!!! you have no idea how much it helped me get an A in the course.
Very fair professor. One of the only one's that give participation points just by showing up. Her tests are difficult but extremely fair. Many opportunities for extra credit. She is always available to help too. She does make a lot of mistakes, but she is human. Anyone saying she rushes must be a freshman. This is college. suck it up.
Very fair professor - knows calculus and can explain it well. If you know you're dumb when it comes to math then you might need to tutoring zone, TAs, etc; but it will be this way with any teacher. Very nicelady. Lecture participation and HW assignments can help your grade. A is very possible without outside help if you try
Difficult class. Impersonal. It's what you would expect from college calculus though. Keep on top of everything
Very fair & nice lady. Lectures & old exams are similar to actual exams. She tells you what types of problems you should expect on tests. Explains things & easy 2 understand UNLIKE that HORRIBLE HORRIBLE dude Dr. Kozinsky. I have him as my teacher but go to Smith's lectures (she writes exams) and have aced every single exam thus far.
Horrible professor: (1) always walks into lecture late, then fumbles, wasting the first 10min of class setting up (2) makes tests unnessesarily hard (3) the notes are unorganized (4) she never finishes the lectures, leaving at least one to five examples empty (5) she teaches assuming everyone already knows the material
i went into this class really scared n stressed. I got a C on my first exam,& that made me rly stressed. so i hauled ass on the rest, and got more than 100% on each. on the final i got a 102/110 and only needed 63% to get an A.So, if u do Very very well on other exams, hw, quiz, the final weighs little to nothing! w/e u do, DONT TAKE KOZINSKY!
Tests are challenging but very manageable. Using tutoring zone did help me out though i still managed to get an A on the two I didn't use it for. As long as you do the problems you'll be fine as I never went to lecture and only turned in half the assignments.
This is an assembly class meant to weed out pre-meds. If you don't do any work, unless you are a calc genuis, you will do poorly. You have to study A LOT, and you'll do well. Make sure you get all the extra points, they add up to basically a test grade. Tutoring Zone is a LIFE SAVER, Zach is great, so do that for sure. I did that, got an A
Fair professor, you have to go to class, do the HW, do the test review and practice test at broward teaching, and you'll be fine. Teaching is pretty straightforward and uses abstract examples to describe a concept, which is good b/c youll need to understand those in higher math courses. I recommend, you'll get a solid base in calculus 1.
not a bad professor over all, but she teaches in such a way like she expects you to have already learned this stuff. Great if you've taken calc in high school but very difficult if you are a newbie. she would skip huge steps in problem solving which would be very confusing if you are just introduced to the subject
Dont take if you've never seen calc before. She assumes you know everything already. Her exams are tricky while the quizzes and lectures are straight forward. She swears she prepares you, but in reality, most students felt unprepared for first exam. Passed AP Calc BC, yet pulled a 69% on multiple choice of first exam.. you tell me.
Horrible teacher. Boring as sin. Her voice puts me to sleep. I got an A in MAC2233 but I'm having trouble in this class. Make sense? of course not. Worst of all she wants you to fail. 2 days after a quiz she gave us a quiz with all the questions most students got wrong. Why would you do that?!
I didn't think she was that bad, then again I have had Calc before. She's really helpful if you go to her office hours. Goes a little slow and likes to keep you a few minutes late. Master her review sheet, because that's as hard as the math gets on the exam. It's a weed out course, so prepare to do a lot of work and studying.
Horrible class. Just meant to weed out pre-med students. Makes every example in class easy and then makes the tests unnecessarily hard. more helpful when you speak to her one on one but overall, dont take the class unless you have to.
JANE IS WONDERFUL! Her lectures could get slightly boring, esp if you've already learned the material before, but she is a great instructor & VERY caring and helpful. Her office hours & extra exam review sessions were great. do her review sheets!
She is slow in teaching, you'll probably have to stay a little bit after class time. Very helpful if you ask questions, and a very nice lady.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. she cant teach at all. you have to teach yourself everything. the only reason i passed this class was because of tutoring zone. I made an A+ in precalc and Trig but recieved my first C ever from her. DO NOT TAKE SMITH! Only way to make a good grade is if you have taken AP calc in high school.
Since she's the coordinator, Mrs. Smith will write all the exams even if she's not your lecturer. She makes the class proof/definition heavy. HW not true to exams. Not the best lectures but extremely helpful during exam review sessions. Honestly though, TZ is your BEST resource. They teach far better and will clear up any areas of difficulty.
She's really not that bad! If you ever have a question, she's always willing to answer it. This is calculus...it's not supposed to be a cakewalk! Exams were tricky, but doable with all the resources provided. The only thing I didn't like about her was that she was always behind/rushing! Besides that, she's a kind helpful lecturer.
Smith is not bad of a teacher at all. I've seen much worse at UF. She goes slow but that's good for a lot of people who are forced to take Calculus but aren't good at math. Exams are fair. She encourages you to use your resources and those who aren't doing so well aren't taking her advice.
Ms. Smith is a friendly teacher but I didn't learn a lot from her, probably in part because I'm not a huge math guy. She moves slow so she tends to get behind in the lecture notes resulting in her taking concepts off the test and putting them on the next one. She's very willing to answer questions. I can't stress enough: Go to TZ test reviews!
I'm horrible at math and TutoringZone saved my life! I recommend them to everyone, they helped SOOOOOOO MUCH!!
Lectures were no help at all, book was no help at all, too much time put in the class for such a low grade, and tests that were WAY too tricky. She's nice, but it's a weed out course. Go to TZ if you want to have any hope of passing.
She was a good teacher. People who complain either are not putting enough effort in, or just aren't good at math. Be sure to practice A LOT. Oh and Study Edge is definitely not necessary to pass... If you are willing to study a lot that is.
great teacher, always willing to help. Study alot, do the homework, do the practice tests, ask questions and youll do fine. Easy class if you put effort into it.
Rather confusing sometimes when she explained concepts, but i'm sure if you go to broward teaching or her/her tas' office hours you'd be fine. i never used tutoring zone or study edge for calc 1. just go to class, do her review sheets(seriously, do them), and go to broward tutoring if you have trouble and you'll do fine.
She is an alright teacher, but there are just so many better math professors out there. It is difficult to learn the material pre-exam time, so the weekly quizzes are very difficult. The homework is written by a different professor, so one section of your grade is completely unrelated to the exams. Just learn the material before she teaches it.
She's not the best professor I've ever had, but she is not bad. She does know the material she is teaching, but she makes mistakes in lecture a lot when working out problems. It is not really necessary to attend class, but she does ask Clicker questions that you have to be present for that count for a grade.
A great teacher! Explains concepts in a more complicated way though. If you have taken calc in high school, you will be fine. If you haven't, find someone who has.
Amazing!!! Her lectures are very organized, and her teaching style in general too. You can tell that this is not her first time teaching it. I'm taking calc two only because of her. Too bad, she's not teaching it. She made me like math.
If you've taken a calculus course before then this class will be an easy A with minimal to no studying. If you haven't, then it's gonna be a bit of a struggle to get an A. She doesn't really teach that well but overall she's not horrible.
Mrs. Smith is very knowledgeable in math and she is passionate about teaching. She is a good professor but its not her fault that the material for Calc 1 is so crammed up and fast paced. It is better for people who had calculus before. She explains well but you need to do a lot of studying on your own and homework to do well.
I absolutely loved her as a teacher even though I failed 3/4th of the test. GO to office hours and learn material BEFORE the tests. Her homework is VERY tough but she has great exam review guides and doesn't test on any material that she hasn't gone over. Visiting her office hours helped me a lot! She is very nice and helpful!
Jane is a good professor overall. She teaches well. However, she can make the material a bit harder than it has to be by teaching mathematics strictly to definition. Also, she has a habit of never finishing lectures which can be annoying come test time because she has to rush to catch up. She is extremely helpful in office hours--go to them.
Jane Smith was an okay math teacher. She normally knew what she was doing, making some mistakes like all teachers do. However, when it came to her tests, they normally were much harder then the problems encountered in class. I really prepared for the final and it ended up being incredibly difficult. I came in with no ap calc, just pre-calc.
Ms. Smith is a very good teacher, who will do anything she can to make sure you pass, including plenty of extra credit ! That being said, it is up to you to go to class, take notes, do all homework problems and study. If you do that, no reason why you shouldn't get an A
Study and you will get an A. slack and you will fail. Good luck
I didn't understand her explanations in class. The thing that saved me was going to the Teaching Center, and using the tutors there are very helpful. Go to all the review sessions possible and do all of the online homework and quizzes, they are worth a lot of points.
Her homework and quizzes are way harder than they need to be. I got frustrated so much trying to do them.
Although mrs smith is a nice lady, no matter how much you read the book, recite the poems, or memorize your perfect squares, Khoisan is just too hard to learn. Avoid this class!
She makes this class so hard and there is so much work for it.
Nice lady, horrible teacher. Avoid taking this class with her she does not explain the material well, gives way too much work, and makes the class more difficult than it needs to be.
A fantastic math teacher! Mrs. Smith's lectures cover everything you need to know to ace the exams.
Like everyone said, nice lady, but not helpful at all. Studyedge is right across campus and knows how to teach us how to pass business calc and move on with our lives.
Helpful just not very clear. She also gives way too much unnecessary homework. Good luck.
I highly suggest taking this course either online on your own time, or with another professor if you have the option. She will give you way too much work, online homework, written homework, quizzes weekly, HITT clicker questions (attendance mandatory) exams and final. There is too much work given, without enough solid covering of the material.
Let me start by saying Professor Smith is a nice lady. However I strongly suggest you take this class with someone else. Having previous knowledge of calculus, this is my only hope of passing this class as she explains nothing and simply assigns work and more work. All she does is stand there doing the problems herself, not allowing you to keep up.
If you do all the homework then the exams are easy. Highly recommend SE
I've taken calculus before, but didn't really understand it. I found this class to be a lot easier than the calc I took in high school. There is homework, but it's not unmanageable and doesn't take more than 3 hours a week. Exams are fairly straightforward as long as you study her old exams. Would take again.
Just as long as you take the practice exams before the exams you should do fine. I took Calculus in high school and her explantations are way better than my high school teacher. You really just have to teach yourself and do practice problems.
Super hard class... Had to drop it. Jane is a first class SOB. dont expect any help from her, went to her office hours a couple of times just to get shot down. Take this class online some where else is you don't want your GPA to get ruined.
Very easy. If you go to lectures and pay attention, you should expect a good grade.
Use Study Edge, only way I passed.
Gives extra credit on tests so I guess not that bad
Lectures for this class were packed, and a couple of times the professor seemed to get lost herself for a couple of minutes on what she was even doing. Tests were not too difficult, but like any math you need to do the homework to get a hang of things. HIIT clickers means that participation is a must.
She's a really great professor and explains things really well. Tests aren't too bad, and there's usually 6-10 points extra credit on them. The last test and the final are very difficult though, so make sure to do well on the first two tests. There's a lot of homework, and a weekly quiz at discussion class. You only need the textbook for homework.
Let me start by saying I took calc 1 and a bit of calc 2 in HS. Jane is a sweet lady, but her ways of teaching calc 1 are very odd. She focuses on theorems and abstract concepts causing material to become confusing, even if you're familiar with it. However, while the tests are designed to trick you, she provides extra credit to balance it out.
Nice lady, but the lectures go quickly and she's not very clear.
Dr. Smith is a decent teacher. However, the exams are extremely difficult. Remember to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Even then it is still a very difficult exam to take, the test are targeted to see if you mastered the material. Look over previous exams.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken at UF, I tried so hard to get an A+ but ended with an A- due to the exams being so difficult. Smith does okay at teaching, but the examples and problems she goes over in lecture are nothing like the test. The test questions are combined concepts from multiple lectures, rather than one direct concept.
At the beginning of the semester this class was very hard to keep up with. Her lectures were long and hard to follow. I ended up not doing very well on the first exam so then I decided to try Study Edge and it ended up helping a lot! The Study Edge reviews made more sense and were a lot more entertaining. Ended up with an A in the class!
The class moves at a very fast pace and it is easy to fall behind. There are a ton of assignments due weekly so you have to stay on top of the class. The exams are medium difficulty and require a decent amount of studying. I personally used Study Edge for the class and did better than most of my friends who didn't, so I would highly recommend it.
First, she is a really nice teacher, she shows she actually cares. However, her class was very fast and boring, seemed to be no pauses. Tons of outside homework and quizzes did not help. However, when I discovered study edge everything because they had weekly reviews where they broke down everything. I do think I would have passed without them.
There's a lot of homework but I recommend you take advantage of all the assignments given because it'll boost your grade. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and the TAs are super helpful with their office hours. You DEFINITELY have to study for ALL exams. There are three regular exams and one final.
Jane Smith is my favorite teacher/professor I've ever had. She's wonderful, bright, and TRULY cares about you understanding the material. She's an absolute rarity. Just like any other class, you have to put time in. Even still, just paying attention and doing the small amounts of homework required, you'll be fine. If you need help, she's there.
She was a great teacher. When I needed help I would go to her office hours and she would help me understand everything one on one. She really enjoys helping her students. One of the best teachers I've had at UF by far!
She obviously cares about her students because of the fact that she is constantly messaging us to make sure we have the latest news and gives multiple ways for reviews for her exams. She basically tells you to come to her office hours. I appreciated her elongated lectures she took time to explain instead of rushing through everything.
She is a very kind lady that wants you to succeed, but sometimes she can make an easy subject difficult, even if you know it already. The TAs can be difficult to understand at times. It's a good idea to watch the lectures, even if you know the subject already, bc she will give you the heads up on a difficult problem that you will see on the exams!
Jane Smith is one of those professors who is pretty nice and cares yet strict. However, her lectures are really confusing and boring. The TA and other classmates taught me more than she did. A lot of the time, I would also have to figure out how to do things on my own. I thought she was okay, but most of my friends in this class hated her.
I took this class hybrid and it was the worst class I have ever taken. I should have just gone straight into calc 1. she's very nice but her and my TA Lindsey made things so confusing. If you have to take higher level math classes, try your hardest on your placement exam, cause I thought this would be a review for me and it definitely was not!!
Ms. Smith is amazing! Her lectures are great and I learned so much from her! I'm honestly not the best with math but I learned so much from her! She is very understanding and cares about her students. If you study and attend lectures you'll do great!
Jane Smith very nice and can be accessed outside of class easily but her lectures were unbelievably boring. The class is set up nicely though, just do the homework and quizzes and you can still pass even if your exam scores aren't great. There is a lot of work in this class but overall, it is manageable.
Taking pre-calc with prof. Smith was decent. It was very homework heavy. She was not the one in the lecture videos, something my classmates and I did not know for a while. Tests could be very hard to very easy, depending on the questions. Study a lot and do not miss hw. She responds to emails fast.
This professor was great but the coursework did move quite quickly, therefore, I used study edge and it got me an A in the class. I also liked that this course had the option to drop quizzes which boosted my grade.
