She could be clearer, but she is so hot. I seriously only when to lab lecture to gaze at her beauty.
She is not hot, but a really good teacher. She has been doing the Organic Lab for a while now and really has it down.
She is a good teacher. Make sure you go to the lecture because sometimes she gives extra points for just coming.
Uber Hottie!!

She is very condescending and hard to approach. Her lectures are unorganized. She doesn't care about her students.
She is soooo sexy!! She also teaches well. She wears tight jeans that accentuate her beutiful rear. Very intelligent and very hot.
Professor was uber uber uber uber uber uber uber HOTT!!! With a double t!

Hot! Oh and she's a good teacher! Made a hard class somewhat less hard :)
Chose her for OChem 1, 2 and lab! I think that speaks for itself.
very nice, good teacher
Awesome teacher! I had her for Organic 1 and 2 and the lab and she was great. She loves to teach and organic lab is the best class ever!!!! She makes it easy to approach her for questions and even has study classes for those students who need extra help.
Pretty good teacher, but I hear that Gary Gray is better. Standard ochem tests- do the homework. Twice.
Good teacher. Explains concepts well. A little flighty but makes class interesting. I was sad I could not have her for o chem 2 as well.
Are you people insane? I think that Wissinger is one of the worst OChem Profs out there. She is very ditzy and doesn't really care if 48% of her class fails the third midterm (yeah..48%) Take Gray if possible!
If you don't study, yea, you'll fail. I've heard Jane is the best professor for Organic Chemistry. Plus she's in charge of the lab. If you can get her for 2301, 02, and lab, it would perfect.
Very easy. Study, ask for help, do the practice tests. Those that don't do well didn't try. Jane IS the best chem teacher at UMN, so don't let someone else tell you differently. IF Jane doesn't fit into your class schedule, then take Gary Gray, a very close second.
she does nothing for you, I did great in the class without ever going to lecture and she is boring and pointless....I am pretty sure she did nothing for me and if I didn't have to take her class I woulda saved myself hours of busy work and crap
Organic lab is pure busy work and ass kissing to get one of the 3 A's for your section. The curve will kill your grade and Wissinger is never around, plus her lectures are a waste of time!
Lab was a lot of busy work, but I enjoyed going. It is not that hard to get an A. Study for the quizzes, and get help on lab reports if you aren't doing well. Keep up with the work! I will miss having Jane as a teacher. But lab lecture was very pointless. I got an A without ever going.
Prelab lecture was pointless as your lab TA will say the same thing Professor Wissinger says in the lecture. It would be wiser to skip the lecture to eat that needed lunch before taking on a two hour lab. Grading in the lab was very picky. Received points for having random things written in the notebook. Very hard to earn an A in the lab.
Great Professor. I agree lecture was pointless, but if you need help she is very approachable, nice and helpful!
Dr. Wissinger is extremely nice and fairly available if you need help. However I didn't like how she babied us a lot in lecture as far as her coverage of the material and teaching style--almost reminded me of high school.
Very nice and helpful. Curve helps a lot (80% = A). Kind of ditzy, but it's funny. She'll hold office hours/study hours for you when you need them. Recommended.
Boring. Terrible teacher. Reading book is better than going to class.
Very good explanations of reactions and mechanisms.
Dr. Wissinger is AWESOME! She's the first professor I ever visited in office hours and I'm so glad I did. She's a great lady and does is doing everything she can to keep the lab info relevant and keep the UofM up to date with the latest and greatest experiments ("Green" Chemistry). The class is very rewarding... I learned SO MUCH!
Jane is a good woman who knows her chemistry, but she's not for me. Ditzy would a good way to describe it. Plus, she insists on using what's "green" instead of what works. Yields all around are poor in lab, but she's off in her own little world, excited about how "green" everything is. It just doesn't seem to be an efficient way of running a class.
Great professor. Makes class interesting, and shows mechanisms and reactions in detail. Important to attend class because she'll concentrate on certain things for the tests. She's also very helpful, and is willing to hold extra study and review sessions for students.
Jane Wissinger is the worst ochem teacher I have ever had. I am retaking this course and in comparison to the other 2 professors I have switched between, Jane doesn't seem to care that her students learn the material well or do well on her exams. She is also NOT HOT. >:[]
I hate ochem, so it's hard to like a teacher who teaches it. She's nice and loves her students, but was not interesting at all. Her tests are awful and she picks on people in class for answers to mechanisms! UHG! So much to know!!!
Jane is great. She is very willing to help. DO PROBLEMS! People say OCHEM is hard, and it is compared to other subjects, but you just have to put the time in and DONT MEMORIZE, you can do OCHEM just understanding concepts. Regardless, I recommend Jane for sure.
I think Jane is a really great teacher! She takes a lot of time going through things and is very willing to help sudents who don't understand. Her exams are pretty brutal so it is definitely necessary to spend time on the material and do lots of practice problems. Also she is quite entertaining- I really enjoyed her class and learned a lot.
Very nice. Her tests are hard, but it's OCHEMII - so no surprise there. Definitely not as difficult as other professors at the U. She often says "you shouldn't memorize" but that's kind of a lie - her tests are mostly reactons/mechanisms + a MNR/RI problem.
Really helpful, made chemistry interesting and fun for me.
Tries hard to keep her class interesting along with dressing to "try" to impress. I suppose its better than a prof. that doesn't care about how boring his/her lectures are and if they came with bed hair. Office hours are good...you'll get a different aspect of her as compared to lecture. Do your problems...then do them again.
OChem lab is the most time-consuming class I have ever taken. They make you copy ~ 160 typed pages during the semester for no apparent reason since you can use your manual in lab. Also 5 lab reports which are 5-6 typed pages each. Take this class when you have nothing else to do and don't go to lecture because it is useless!
Worst. Teacher. Ever. She's bubbly, but she's terrible. Boring. I had to retake the class because the last 20 minutes of the second to last class, she announced she's putting 3 more chapters we didn't even start yet on the final! At that point, I walked out. Best. Decision. Ever. I'm taking it again with Watson and it is WAY better! I actua
She is the nicest and the most approachable professor at the U and she truly cares about the students.
I like this lady a lot. Yes, she is a little too bubbly sometimes, especially in the morning, but that's what make her fun. Ochem is not supposed to be easy.. so I don't know why people keep on complaining about her being hard.. Her exams are not that difficult if you study and keep up with the class. So do the homework and her practice exams.
Good teacher! I actually enjoyed going to labs. Lectures weren't entirely mandatory but did help clarify some of the material. Jane is very helpful and approachable. Would walk around during lab checking to see if anyone needed help. Quizzes weren't hard and lab reports (although somewhat time consuming) weren't bad either! Def. recommend!
LOVE THIS WOMAN. She IS a little too bubbly in the morning and kind of makes you want to crawl back into bed, but she is so nice and is always willing to help. Go to office hours for helpful little tips on studying the material. A's are unlikely because of how hard the subject is, not just the teacher. Lab kind of sucks, but it's not her fault.
Jane only does the lectures so grades depend mostly on your TA. The lectures have some good info but you don't really need to attend them. Overall the class requires a lot of time. If you enjoy Ochem the lab should go by pretty quickly. Make sure to cover as much as possible in the lab reports.
A class that made me love organic chemistry. Jane is the best, extremely clear expectations and very helpful.
Jane is a great professor. Her assignments are tough, but are very useful in helping you to understand the concepts. She's very willing to answer questions, and does a great job of giving real life application for the subject matter.
Grade depends on your TA. Lectures are pointless essentially, but she'll make one mandatory and make you sign in or something. This class really comes down to making sure you have a good TA. If you have any questions though, Jane'll answer them and pretty quickly.
I thought I would hate this lab course but I actually ended up liking it. As others said, a lot depends on your TA. It requires a lot of work and her quizzes are somewhat difficult. Lab reports take forever. Overall good course.
All depends on your TA. Some of them are real pricks. Very time consuming. Lectures are useless.
Jane is the best! She makes ochem interesting and clear, and her tests are very fair. Very funny and awesome too :)
Its like impossible to make an A. I put all my time into this class and had the 2nd highest average in my section and still did not make it. Grading is extremely harsh and unclear. Also, the lab is very time consuming.
Awesome teacher, lot of busy work but relatively easy
Very clear guidelines for assignments and material covered. Worksheets and quizzes are unfair due to multiple versions. This actually matters because there is no letter grade, only a curve. You will have virtually no clue what grade you have. I wound up with an A, and consider myself lucky.
pretends to be nice but actually is not. grades are assigned randomly and when asked about it shes lies and promptly makes something up. Class is easy but very busy. Quizzes are somewhat tricky.
First of all, if you want to know how you're doing in a class, this course will drive you insane. You'll have no clue until final scores are out. Multiple versions of quizzes make this whole class unfair due to the curve, which can put you at an 89% B-. Jane is really friendly/helpful in office hours, but that just doesn't make up for the grades.
That class made me want to die but her enthusiasm and warmth inspired me to keep going.
Extremely helpful in office hours and if you do the problems she assigns in the textbook you will be well prepared for the exams. I honestly have no complaints and really enjoyed the class. Take it with her if you can cause she has a glowing attitude in lectures.
Labs are interesting and fun to do. However, if you get a TA that you do not enjoy it can ruin the experience. Quizs and practical can be challenging but she is very helpful in office hours if you have questions. My only complaint is that the grading is ridiculous. Usually only the top person gets an A but she does give out many A-. Enjoyed theclas
Wissinger is awesome! I had her for 2302 as well. She isn't always the most organized person, but she's extremely enthusiastic and cares about her students. (She also makes sure to do a demonstration with each lecture.) I dislike chemistry, but I looked forward to her class.
This lab is very time consuming and difficult at times, but I am glad I had Jane. Lab reports are difficult and lengthy, but she is very willing to help during office hours. I came into the class dreading it but ended up having a positive experience. There is no final and the lab practical is pretty easy. Just be prepared to put in the work!
Organic lab is hard, regardless of where you take it. If you are unlucky enough to find yourself in the world's premier chemical engineering university, it only gets worse. The curve is unbearable, and directions are clear as mud. Only take this course if you absolutely need to.
This class was incredibly time consuming. She looks for very specific details on worksheets and lab reports that make it hard do well, even if your answers are correct and make sense. If you must take this course, be prepared to spend 10 hours a week in class and 10 hours at the very minimum outside of class.
I'll preface the comment by saying I received an "A" in the course. In my experience, this professor was not helpful in terms of clarity or helpfulness. Your grade depends almost entirely on your performance relative to the rest of your section. So, if you're looking for an A, be prepared to not help your classmates and group up with like grades
As someone who struggles with ochem even after doing tons of problems, Dr. Wissinger wasn't great. It was hard to anticipate which things she would be testing on based on lectures (which weren't helpful; she drew mechanisms and stumbled over powerpoints). Exams were very in-depth and specific with low averages every time.
Professor Wissinger was a very entertaining professor. She kept class interesting with demos and jokes. Her tests were fairly challenging even after doing the homework problems. The class is well curved and the test averages were 45-60%
UM. UGH she cares, is clear about directions, and her lectures are worth attending (mech given, ect =on assigments). however, the "curve" doesn't exist that she claims. I had the highest grade on the final lab report in my sec 191/200 (+As on others). still got a b. to sum it up get ready to waste 6/7 days on just this class.
Dr. Wissinger is a very good and thorough organic chemistry II professor. She really cares about her students and how well they are doing and puts in the extra time or goes over the things the students want. I did not feel her tests were unfair... they were very based off of mechanisms from lectures, but specific reactions from the book.
Dr. Wissinger was not a very clear professor, especially when it came to a hard subject like this. Her lectures were hard to follow and disorganized, and her exams were difficult because it was very hard to know what to expect on her exams (seemed to ask minute details). Test averages were 55% but you can drop your lowest score, which is nice.
Dr. Wissinger genuinely cares how well her students do in her class. She really changed my perspective on organic chemistry overall. I got a C+ in Ochem 1 but I got an A in her class (Ochem 2). If you pay attention, do the practice problems, and ask A LOT of questions to make sure you understand concepts, you will do better than the curve!
Of all of the science professors I have had at the U, Dr. Wissinger is my absolute favorite. She is an amazing professor and takes the time to get to know students if you go into her office hours. She is willing to help with whatever you need and the lectures are super helpful for the lab. Definitely recommend her!
I had Jane for organic lab lecture. She was excellent! So entertaining. The class requires a lot of work so you will get out of it what you put in. She is so very helpful during office hours as well. Getting an A is quite difficult in lab; you must be truly the top student to do so, but the B range is very attainable.
She's very friendly and loves chemistry and teaching. The lab course is a lot of work, but she is always willing to help and her lecture provides MOST of what you need for reports. The experiments can be fun and cover a wide range of principles, but are occasionally stressful. Grading was strict, but you usually get what you put in.
The prof is nice person, but she just wasn't prepared to teach Green Chem - very unorganized. 1) No textbook, just journal articles. 2) Pop quizzes about details from the journal articles. 3) The quality of guest speakers varied wildly. 4) 3000 word paper instead of midterm. 5) Grade is based almost entirely on said paper and the final.
Solid lecturer, knows her stuff and is very excited about organic chemistry. I liked her, however this was a lab section and so I only saw her in lecture every week and then once or twice in lab.
Professor Wissinger does care, and doesn't initially come off as intimidating, but as the semester went on, she scared the crap out of me. She gives TA's a really strict grading rubric for lab reports, worksheets and quizzes so averages are usually low. Go to her lectures, they're usually pretty helpful and give you tips for quizzes and worksheets.
Very disorganized. Many times have not covered slides for the next lab. Lots of unnecessary information. TA's are horrible. Grading is not consistent. NO CURVE AT ALL. Get ready to spend at least 10 HOURS for just this class besides 9 hours in class per week. Pre-labs are long. Post-lab work is at least couple hours. Lab reports are long and hard.
A decent teacher. She obviously cares very much about organic chemistry and does help in office hours. Sometimes, what she says does not match up with the TA grading. Follow lab manual to a tee and your experiments will go okay. Quizes very detailed. Last few weeks have many projects, busy week. Long lab - always expect to stay 20 minutes late
Sophisticated, experienced professor and researcher with the soul of girl, combining with the harsh course load in 2311. Such a bittersweet experience after submitting the last assignment :)
Dr. Wissinger's lectures are rushed and have too much information crammed into 50 minutes. Your lab TA will often be more valuable than her information in lecture. However, she is very enthusiastic and excited about the lab experiments. She is very devoted to her students' success and is transparent about grading and assignments.
Chem 2311 is a lot of work. You have pre-labs and post-labs for every lab and 4 lab reports. My only complaint is that the guidelines for the lab reports are very vague and leave out a lot of what the TAs have on their rubric. Prof Wissinger is good at explaining the chemistry and is very enthusiastic about green organic chemistry.
This course was awful. Very strict on the grading with no clear indication for why that many points were taken off. Directions on lab reports and worksheets are not always clear and the type of answers that are expected of you is not always clear. If you can avoid this class, do so by all means. Not worth it if it is not necessary.
Wonderful professor. This class requires a lot of work, but if you're willing to put in the time and go into office hours to ask questions before you turn in your papers, this class is incredibly easy. Seriously, go to office hours to ask any questions about your papers and they will just tell you what they want to see. It's that simple.
Not an easy class, but Jane made it even harder. She had us watch lecture videos that did not help me learn at all. I played them in double speed (2X) to watch them faster. The lab reports she made us write were confusing and she offered little to no help. The exams were even harder than what she went over in class and lab. Avoid her if you can.
Grading is EXTREMELY vague. The professor is hard working and has many office hrs, but is only helpful to a certain extent. Honestly, your grade in this class comes down to whether you have a good TA or not, and you will have to spend at least 10 hrs on this class a week (besides in-class time) to have even a mediocre grade. Watch out for the exams
This class took up a lot of time, but the content was not overly challenging. The grading system is extremely confusing and poorly set up, as your grade was basically based on how lenient your TA was. Accuracy was valued over understanding of the content.
Avoid at all costs. She makes you buy three textbooks that she wrote. The canvas site is an absolute mess with no clear due dates or what assignments you are responsible for. She will make you site her textbooks in many of the assignments that you do which feels like she is forcing students to praise her. On top of all this, she is very unlikable.
This class is obviously a lot of work, given the subject matter. But the unclear grading criteria and breakneck speed of the material made for a very difficult semester. The grade that you get in this class is entirely dependent on how lenient your TA is, as the grading of the lab reports is entirely subjective. Be sure to attend weekly lectures.
This class was terrible. There are multiple things due every week, quizzes are saturated with too much info, and unless you're a mindreader, they'll take off points for things they never mentioned/specified. The TAs were so bad at doing their job you'd think they were paid to be that terrible. 3 quizzes, 4 lab reports, 14 experiments.
any inkling of interest in chemistry you have will be taken over by the overwhelming anxiety this class will give you. wissinger is super passive aggressive and your grade it completely up to the TA you have. good luck lol
My main complaint is that she talks insanely slow and her mandatory attendance lectures are just her reading off the slides. The attendance points are needed for a good grade so you're forced to sit through it. Put the lab technique videos on max 2x speed and she still talks at sloth speed.
this class feels like a 6-7 credit class. There is so much work to do weekly & your other classes can suffer from it. Grading is unclear & subjective to your TA. Jane is accommodating if you miss a lab. Lectures are wack bc she just reads off slides when they are online. I will say tho, the experiments are cool & help understand ochem further.
If you think this course will be similar to other average lab courses, you are completely getting yourself unprepared mentally. It's 8 HOURS a week for a 4 credit course. Also, expect to spend about 10 hours a week on the overwhelming worksheets and pre-lab notes that are unbelievably long and detailed. Your grade depends totally on your TA.
When it comes to worksheets, there are some impossible questions that she doesn't go over in class. She thinks we are some organic chemistry graduate students. This class is super loaded with homework, reports, and even quizzes. Some TAs grade things at a sloth pace so you basically have no idea what your grade is until the very end.
As for professor Wissinger, she is very engaging and her enthusiasm about chemistry made attending lectures way more fun but the class itself felt impossible to keep up with. Prepare to spend at least 15 hours a week prepping for labs and also doing worksheets. I recommend going to office hours and meticulously proofreading your work or else RIP.
I heard Thomas Hoye is better option.
Will affect your mental and physical wellbeing pick a different professor.
Too many assignments and vague grading systems. There is also the exam. The exam can be said to be more difficult than any lecture. The huge amount of questions and various questions. And exams always test some inexplicable things, which in my opinion don't need to be kept in mind at all.
Lab manuals they provide you are not great descriptors of what occur in the experiment. Lectures are decent and she brings a lot of enthusiam to class. Expect a lot of worksheets (1 per lab) that are worth about 65-85 points each. She has a pointless technique grade that everyone averages a 4/7 on (technique grade per lab). Expect 5 credits of work
The amount of work this class requires should make it worth 5-6 credits. Be prepared to spend at least 25 hours a week on this class, with lab report weeks being closer to 40 hours. Before every 4 hour lab you will have a packet, prep, videos, and readings. Your TA will make or break your experience. If your other classes are also hard, good luck.
Professor Wissinger has set up the course well, grading expectations are clear, the course calendar is up to date, and changes to the course are well communicated. The class is a ton of work (40+ hours a week tbh) but it's do-able if you follow her recommendations. Don't take the course along with any other heavy STEM classes. TAs can make/break.
This is a very difficult and time consuming class. Dr. Wissinger is very nice and understanding, and makes sure to teach us to the best of her ability. Your TA basically decides your grade, however, so you better hope that you get a good one. Lots of work outside of class and the lab reports are difficult and long, so prepare yourself.
Dr. Wissinger was very helpful during office hours and this is a good time to get help on lab reports and worksheets. However, this course has an insane workload and is extremely difficult to manage with other classes. The TAs also graded pretty strictly but the experiments in this course were interesting and made it worth it.
This is such a time consuming class. 9 hours of class a week and countless hours on weekly 4 page packets. Theres over 3,000 points in the class. Your TA determines your grade. However Jane is very kind and helpful during office hours and wants you to succeed. The lab reports are graded very harshly. The exams are so hard. Lots of points though.
This lady still gives PTSD even after I finish her class. She is super unhelpful in the lab and only serves to scare people there. The test has really minor detail or concept that would be better suited for a lecture class. Met her again this semester for another class so pray for me.
Jane is okay. I'm sure she's a nice person, but her lectures are rarely actually useful for the course. For some reason there are TWO TESTS in a LAB CLASS. This really made me mad. There is absolutely no reason to have exams in a lab class. In addition, all the new information covered in class is barely/not taught by Wissinger
Never spent so much time on a course in my life. Lots of inconsistencies between lecture, textbooks, videos, and what TAs say. Exams are very hard b/c they involve o chem 2 info and lab techniques and theory. Harsh grading but also vague guidelines. So many assignments. Experiments were cool but everything else was terrible.
