I thought interpersonal communication would include more class discussions. I wish the Group assignment wasn't the big assignment for the semester. Sometimes group members can't be trusted. Cultural artifact assignment was interesting but did not find it relative to the course. The interviews were the best assignment of all! WOULD RECOMMEND
Fav. Teacher
very nice teacher, knows her stuff . Come to class prepared everyday
A good instructor that knows her stuff and is very adamant about what she expects of her students. However, I was unfortunate enough to inadvertently get on her bad side when she accused me of plagirism in front of the whole class, only for it not to be true. After that she had it in for me and graded my papers with a sour bias. Students beware
Everyday is like the next where you show up and sit through notes from the book. I thought it helped the time go by and I didn't mind her class at all, considering your going to be screwed if you get someone in the class who has something to say to EVERYTHING. Other than that I enjoyed my group and the class. Take her over Hobbs.
Ms. Young is a very qualified instructor. She knows her material, but is not very diplomatic in her interactions with students. She is a no excuse gal!She either likes or dislikes you, there's no in between. In communications she requires five speeches, a midterm and several written assignments. Overall I enjoyed her class.
Ms. Young is really full of herself. She plays favorites and shows "grace" only to those who are the chosen. Her mid-term and final are right out of the text, very easy. I worked my butt off and did well on written assignments and tests, as well as my speeches and ended up with a B. There are easier comm classes at merced, take one!
I'm always scared going into her class. I don't like her at all. She plays favorites. Not a great teacher.
Her "my way or the highway" approach is not what gets me. Its her nonstop barrage of assignments, and the apparent design of her class whose aim is to burn you out as quickly as possible. I've never been so tired of a class before. Her teachings also tend to be in conflict with her earlier lectures and common sense altogether. Find someone else.
I found her to be a very good teacher. but she's strict about getting your work in. if you do the assignments and actually put some thought into your speeches you'll be fine. she made the class interesting and gave us a lot of freedom for our speech topics which was great. don't take her if your lazy, but if your serious i definately recomend her.
She's a good instructor. I don't know what the rest of the people talking about. As long as you do work and pay attention, you'll be fine.
she be cool but makes this class way harder than it should be. take another comm instructor. this should be one of the easier subjects not one you have to stress over and put in tons of time and effort. and that's exactly what will happen if you take her
I agree with another review: full of herself. Very dogmatic and unhelpful. She should find another field besides teaching.
Very hard grader...can be nice at some times but strick on what she wants turned in. A lot of work, and must be reading the book.
she is a very tough grader and there is a lot of work required but besides that she is an excellent teacher makes the subject fun! and uses great examples to make things clear! if you do your work pay attention and read u will be just fine!
Very Arrogant, angry woman. DEMANDS instant respect, which needs to be earned-not through the punative nature of the classroom. MAJOR chip on shoulder and everyone will pay.The absurd, unrealistic amount of homework is astounding given this is not an AP class.Shame. Interesting topics but I'm too concerned w/getting all the work done and laying low.
Tough on gradig, She wants all assaginments to be exactly as she says. Must read book, Quizez every week.
Class is super easy, as long as you have her powerpoints. She will not give you her powerpoints, but google does magic. Links to powerpoints: www.smccd.net/accounts/irigoyen/.../chapter10.ppt Not: change the 10 to whatever chapter you're on and plug it into google
She was strict, contradicts herself a lot, and grades speeches depending on how she would like it done. i agree with the folks below, saying that she plays favorites. She has this power trip and will only give you an A if you follow her perfectly. I believe every person's speech is unique, but it's her way or the highway if you want that A.
You will have to do a lot of work in her classes, but you will learn a lot. I think she is a great teacher that makes the subject interesting, will bring you out of your shell, and drill the material into you.
She knows her stuff on communications, but this class was very demanding, if comm is not your major and just taking to transfer, beware to put most of your time in this class. She is scary and strict, but she also like to have fun with the class at times. Lots of notes, reading, quizzes, and time out of class to do group project witch sucked...
i took her class during summer school. i learned alot and i really enjoyed her class and her stories. i think she is an great teacher. take her youll learn alot about yourself
If you are someone that procrastinates then do not take this class. She is a strict grader and requires a lot of work. However, if you take the time to do the work and do it well the way she wants it, you will be fine. She also always has her office hours available. Take advantage of her office hours she will help you, unlike other teachers.
Overall Mrs. Young is a good instructor, although she is a strict grader, very picky, and does indeed have her favorites. I deserved a better grade than what I got. participation is a must. funny stories
Mrs. Young-Alexander is a great teacher! Very funny & includes very helpful stories during lectures that clarify the information being taught. Loved Comm 05 & highly recommend it anyone who is needing a comm class to transfer/for their major.
If you have a busy schedule do not take this class with her. Requires a lot of outside group work. She's not clear on what she wants in some assignments. She's nice, but will put you in your place if you try to argue with her.
Very tough. Does not explain assignments clearly. Has terrible grammar on tests which makes it hard to figure out what she is asking. Do not take her. Really though-don't. please
Mrs. Young was one of the most interesting teachers I ever had. . She relates a lot of everyday issues to her lectures. I wasn't excited about taking this class but now I am glad I did. Make sure that you clarity exactly what to do on the assignments though because if you assume then you may do it incorrectly. Loved this class !!
Professor Young is an amazing professor and brings so much energy. You can tell she loves her job and is great to be around. Lots of work but she will help you however she can to make sure you do good in her class. I was terrified of public speaking but by the end of the semester I had it down with Professor Young's help.
Takes too much time from the class to tell stories. Goes on daily about being the greatest teacher. She's arrogant. Has little regard for student's lives while at the same time not grading a single assignment until last week of class due to her own issues. Assigned a group project due 2 days later. Final group project is a 20 minute presentation.
She is really full of herself, but she's fun. For reflection assignments you'll get full credit as long as they are done, but there are a ton of other writing assignment too. The worst parts were that she didn't get anyone a grade until final week. Also finals week is extremely stressful since the last test and group project are a 100 points each.
Class wasn't too difficult, but a little too much work for a communication course.
She is really good at reading the lecture notes off the PowerPoint but anyone can do that. She gives VERY little time to prepare for a speech. It is very stressful to try and meet her expectations that it has caused my other grades to take a hit. When students ask for clarification she just reads her example again expecting us to understand it.010
Ms. Young assigns a lot of research in her speeches and that class (comm 01) requires a lot of time. People who do not put in the time will not pass and will whining about her grading criteria. Her lectures might confuse one but ask her for help and she will ones homework assignment. People who are lazy wont pass her class. ALWAYS COME PREPARED.
She has a big ego and is annoying at times. This class requires that you have a lot of extra time outside of class. She can never be found during her office hours. Good luck!
Sure she's really strict and intimidating but the enthusiasm she shows during lectures makes up for that. There was not one lecture where she didn't have the class laughing at the stories she tells. She keeps lectures genuinely interesting. But she does demand respect from all students so don't feel too comfortable. Overall she's a great professor.
After graduating I still think back to what a horrible class this was. This class was not worth the stress and way to much group work. If your someone who works and goes to school full time this is very difficult and the professor could care less. Also heads up on the scholarship assg. there is a right answer and she'll put the class down...
She will be very rude the 1st day make you not want to stay then you stay and you like her a little until she ruins it again then you like her a little and then again she ruins it. She is a tough grader her tests are moderate if you read but some of the fill in the blank questions did not even make sense. Her grading on papers is just crazy!
u have to keep askin her what her requirements are since they aren't clearly stated in the handouts. No clear rubric. Sometimes not in her office, but never notifies the class. idk if this true for others, but she demoralized our class by comparing us to the other Com 01 class. Overall, only take her if it's the only class u can fit in ur schedule.
Ms. Young is hilarious. She is very passionate about her subject and teaches in a way that will help you relate the textbook to real life. I took a 3 week summer session and although it was a lot of work, it wasn't necessarily difficult. She expects you to be an adult and earn your grade. Pay attention to the lectures and you'll be fine.
Ms. Young may come off as intimidating, especially during the first week of class. But once you get to know her better she's not that bad. She's a very detail-oriented person. She makes boring lectures interesting, and wants students to engage. There are two group projects, including the final. I'd definitely take her again!
I thought Janee was an awesome professor! COMM 01 was difficult, but she gave us the confidence to speak out in class and now I could totally write and give an epic speech! She's an awesome speaker herself and her lectures are very dynamic. There were hardly any tests but three big speeches we had to give: historical, pro-con, and persuasive.
Doesn't like cussing.
Ms. Young is extremely funny, and i enjoy her lectures, but she requires SO much work for group projects. This class makes me feel like i have a second job. She rarely grades assignments so you never know where you stand. This is a GE course and half of the class has dropped because of the workload. Id highly recommend a different professor.
Ms. Young is a great teacher she requires a heavy workload within your groups. This class is mainly graded on your group and partially on yourself. MANY group projects and she expects it to be done her way. Although shes funny at times, id still find another teacher. Even if you try your best you'll prob get a B. No one received an A the past sem
Professor Young was great! Not only is she very passionate about teaching but she shapes you up to be a better student. You will understand that hard work pays off. Once we all transfer and become juniors, no one will be holding our hand. Take her class! She's awesome.
She is ok, she is very strict.
Mrs. Young is an amazing teacher, this class is not for people who put things off to the side. Procrastination is the biggest grade killer here. This is a very rewarding class if you put in effort as it will stick with you after you are done.
Professor Young gives amazing, very relatable lectures. I found assignment instructions to not be very clear and she did not grade the majority of our assignments until the end of the semester. I had trouble getting her to respond to any e-mails I sent her for clarification on assignments. Its in your best interest to try another teacher!
Ms. Young is so enthusiast & her lectures will definitely not bore you. She may seem a little intimidating the first week, but once you get to know her you get more of an understanding of her. She is hilarious & doesnt like cussing. Participate & there will be no quizzes on Chapter readings, if no one talks about chapters shell quiz the class.
Can be funny but super strict. Doesnt let you keep her notes on your speeches. You wont know your grade until theyre due after finals week. She wont let you volunteer or makeup any exams or speeches.
Honestly, Ms. Young is a cool professor. She definitely makes you work for your grade. If youre a lazy student, this class is not for you. A lot of time outside of class is required. Test are honestly hard because her lectures do contain a lot of information, and she does not give study guides. This class definitely shaped me as a student.
Ive never worked so hard for a B in my life. This class requires ALOT from a student. If you dont have time, you may suffer in this class. Its heavy lectures you take a personal & group exam every exam day. I wont miss these assignments at all. If youre looking for an easy Comm class this class isnt it.
Ms. Young is an awesome professor! You will learn so much in this class. She will help you feel and be more confident about public speaking. She gives constructive critiques on your speech presentation. Her lectures are very informative, lively, and interesting. If you really want to learn how to give great speeches, take this class.
Professor Young is one of the best professors Ive taken, she has amazing lectures that make it easier for you to want to attend class. Participating in the lectures is also important. She can be laid back on grading as long as you follow instructions and deadlines. Would definitely take her again.
Professor Young knows how to connect with her students and her lectures are very fun. She makes teaching look very motivating.
An amazing professor, truly one of those professors that will leave a mark on you. Truly inspirational.
You have to participate in class and is a good speaker does keep the listeners interested. Way too hard on grading. Doesnt give fair grades.
If all you do is go to school then this class is for you. However, for parents that actually work and have kids along with a LIFE. Forget about it. You have too many requirements that are out of class such as community service that you have to make sure your group does as a whole. VERY difficult and almost impossible!! Dropped class first day!
She is very demanding in terms of how much work is given. She is also not very lenient in terms of making up work. You will hardly get a response from her on Canvas messaging, and if you do it will be when it is late or irrelevant. She's hardly in her office and doesn't seem available at all other that the time one spends in class.
I enjoyed this class when we were in lecture, but outside of lecture I never felt prepared or confident. Shes a tough grader, so it ed to constantly being in doubt. The group project we did was an insane amount of work for having to do it online. Would not recommend taking a group comm class online, in person probably would have been better!
I love Ms. Young as a person, but simply not as a teacher. The work load is ridiculous for a busy college student or parent. Especially in a group class, the project requirements were over the top and pointless. I felt more stressed the entire semester, instead of learning. I passed, but the whole class I felt as if my work was graded harshly.
Professor Young did not grade the assignments until the last week of the semester. Due to this issue, I was unable to improve my speeches. I also received a D for her COMM-01 class.
Professor Young was a pleasure to have. She is fun, dynamic, and very personal with her students. Joining live class lectures was always enjoyable! There is a lot of reading involved, and she is very firm on deadlines. However, she is always willing to work with students if they are struggling. Would definitely take again.
Very unorganized. She had links for a history speech that did not pop up, well all her links in canvas did not pop up, students advised her to fix it, but yet she did not. If you have a job, it is 10x harder. She had a document for instruction, but each time I was in class, she would add more into it, making it harder for everyone to understand.
I took this class during Summer 2022, and I would definitely take it again. One of the best teachers I've had.
We are three weeks behind because she didnt get her coursework ready over the summer. She laughed it off and told us Wow you guys are going to have it rough but I believe in you. What about those of us who are taking more than full time? With lives? 80 assignments due in one week. She is condescending, inconsiderate and rude. I have an A btw.
Does not give clear instructions and her lectures are very unorganized. She wasn't prepared for this semester which hurt our grades. She also does not put grades in until after the semester is complete, so you don't know your progress. She's also very harsh on grading and gives no sympathy.
I would not recommend taking this class. There is a very heavy workload that if not done at all or on time, it becomes extremely detrimental to your grade. She is very unorganized with her assignments and still expects the most. If you plan to pass the class with a high grade, be prepared to be stressed out.
This professor began the course unprepared. She did not have the textbook accessible and did not update anything from her canvas pages since 2020. She gave us assignments that were pushed back and were due all in 1 week because her textbook was not accessible. She has scribble handwriting and waits at the end of semester to put grades in.
Her lectures and class discussions are entertaining. Be prepared for some debates because she'll play the devils advocate. Hw is pretty easy as long as you remeber to do it. She includes big group projects as well. only downsied is that she doesnt grade everything right away.
Inconsiderate and is a harsh grader even though she takes a long time to grade. Very unorganized class and she rushes through lectures. She does not take into consideration the lives of her students. The instructions for her assignments are always different than what is posted online.
professor young will grade your paper without any consideration of how hard you worked on it. she states at the beginning of the course that she will give you feedback on the first reflection you turn in but that's it. no more feedback from then forward sometimes she won't even get through the lectures because she gets distracted telling stories.
Funny lecturer, willing to help, and a great class to make friends, but that's about it for positives. Very disorganized class structure. Expects us to be master-level speakers despite this being an introductory class. Bit of an unfair grader as well, she will give low scores to people who obviously tried very hard. Nobody will get an A.
This is basically a weeder course... Classes are very unorganized and way too difficult for an introductory course. Expects way too much, grades harshly and grades extremely late. Do not recommend as your first comm course unless you want the unnecessary stress.
Unorganized and a lot of papers, way too difficult for an introductory course.
Professor Young was a funny and kind teacher but in regards to her class it was difficult. Your grade was very dependent on the people in your group and it was hard to make sure work was being evenly divided. It was also very hard to coordinate schedules with three other people which was always necessary. The class made me really stressed out.
Expect to put in many, many hours of work outside of class. She's a cool and nice person but not a great professor. She has very particular expectations and expects you to read her mind. Blamed the class for miscommunications. She takes forever to give feedback. She also said the r word while on one of her many unrelated tangents in class. yikes.
Love her so much, but she is not for everyone as she is strict, loud, and waits on grading. Those who worry about grading should not take this professor as she takes her time grading, and dates are not updated.
No, just no. Too many things were wrong. Her management of her teaching material, planned class work, what she would expect from her students, it was both messy and inconsistent. So bad so, many of us in the class dropped out within the first few weeks. I have taken a different COMs professor, and in comparison, is much more of an organized breeze.
she is a nice, amazing person but I hated her as a teacher. Your final will be a group essay based on 12 chapters. She gives out alot of classwork, tests, random assignments, and more. every time you miss more than 3 classes your grade drops a whole grade level. A lot of people in my class drop it. We started with about 20 and now there's 9 of us.
Doesn't feel like an intro class at all, and enjoys grilling students in front of everyone. You are shy? Who cares, you'll get put on blast for your lack of experience. Take this class if you enjoy getting degraded.
Knows what she doing even if she seems like a mess at first. She does have tough grading when it comes to speeches. Easy to contact, and can make lectures fun. Does require you to get ahold of a device to be able to do homework and quizzes.
I loved her pace and the way she communicated with students. She's very charismatic and straight forward. Part of the grade is online textbook which has assignments on there if you keep up with them you'll get a good grade in that part but I kept procrastinating. The biggest part of the grade is the in person speeches.
Young was an amazing professor expect to do a lot of writing and speeches in this class but it really does help. During speeches she will give you amazing feedback and she is very clear on how to do outlines.
She likes to hear herself talk. She uses the classroom as a psychiatric center and she talks only about herself and her children and her life and her divorce husband. And she is very extremely loud.
LOUD, no class, speaks incessantly about kids, marriage and her personal life-forces potluck on students, inconsiderate, needs to be an instructor in a German war camp.
She's not clear on instructions and gives a bad grade for it, on the plus she can admit when she is wrong and then changes it. Does not give chances on make up work so if you miss something, that's it. Is good at communicating through pronto and gets back to you swiftly but its useless if your trying to catch a break because she won't give you one.
Worst Teacher I've had to deal with so far, it's like her goal is to give you a hard time. Will not work with you and theres no room for error in this class if you mess up it's hard to stay on track because she won't help. So only take her class if you aren't taking any other classes and have all the time in the world to focus only on this class.
Although there were many group projects and lots of writing assignments, she's a very funny professor and makes lecture fun at first, I was scared going into her class because of the ratings I saw about her, but everyone has different experiences and for me it was my favorite class I really hated presenting, but this class made me enjoy.
If you want a professor that teaches an intro course like she is gatekeeping a PHD take it with her.
I cannot beleive she has tenure--probably safe as an African American fulfilling a quota. Never grades until the end of the semester. Is very rude and condescending.
This was probably one of the worst classes I have ever taken. She degrades her students in front of the class, gives poor and unclear instructions yet still expects perfection, and treats her students with little to no respect. The class itself isn't that difficult but if you want to enjoy your time on campus don't take this communications class.
Yes attendance is mandatory. Yes you WILL be researching a lot. And yes she is a tough grader however she is amazing and very knowledgeable in what she does. This is a college level class. If you want to feel fulfilled and want to feel proud of your work and go far. You come here. I loved the class and everyone who was there in the end did too.
Took her in 2022, amazing professor. Would take her again if I could. From what I remember, she was pretty hilarious at times. There were writing assignments, as well as a group project.
She is great, but she doesn't play. She expects you to be responsible in all aspects and her course is definitely college level. But she is more than a teacher. She teaches life lessons and that class honestly felt like family. It was a learning experience but overall a good one. Do your work on time, go to class, ask questions. All you need to do.
