One of the coolest professors by far at Oakland! She's always willing to answer questions and help out.

Fantastic professor. Always willing to help out/ answer questions. A majority of the exam is based off of lecture. Micro is generally a difficult class SO reading the textbook is STILL important. Exams are somewhat tricky. KEEP UP WITH THE COURSE. Much effort will be needed in this class in order to get a 3.5+

At first she is very intimidating but overall she is a great professor! Her classes are difficult but if you study and pay attention during her lectures you will be aware of exactly what she expects from you.

I love Janell! No wonder why the dean asked her to teach this class, she's extremely helpful & wants you to succeed. You need to come to class for pop quizzes & get the book, she makes test questions from take home msg & self quizzes. Janell is very friendly, smart & open minded. Taking 101 prior to 111 was the best decision I've ever made.

Best teacher I ever hard. She is young but she is very smart. She makes the material interesting and will explain something in many different ways. She is not easy but I have learned a lot and I hope to have her again.

Best Prof I have ever had. She teaches this class and supervises so you want to get into HER class. She is fun and good at explaining. The class is NOT easy but if you come to all the classes and listen to her lectures you can get an A. There are pop quizzes but they are easy

Very hard class. Don't expect a study guide and don't ask for one either. She gives hints to what will be on the test, but sometimes what she says will be on the test never is and puts topics on the test that she said wouldn't be. Go to class! She is willing to help, but if you lack attendence, she probaby won't answer your emails.

WOW I never do this but after i seen the below comment I had to.Janell is a very good Professor.She wants the students to feel comfortable she is no way like a student but she does try to erase that uncomfortable feeling students have with talking to their Prof.Coming to class won't get you an,she does CLEARLY tell you what to expect and shes FAIR

She is a wonderful professor. She goes into great detail about everything and if a student has a question she will take as long as she needs to explain it in better detail. There were pop quizzes every week and she gave a lot of hints to what was going to be on her tests. I loved going to her class because she made it fun and interesting.

I found Janell's lectures to be very engaging. Go to every class (its worth it), understand the material, and you'll do well. Grades were based on 4 exams, a microbes project with a presentation, and some extra credit. She's very smart, a bit tough, but honestly one of the best Bio profs at OU. You'll learn a lot. Definitely take her class!

One of the best professors I have had in my four years of college. This class is not a cake walk by any means. However, Janell is extremely engaging and clear of what she expects. Studying is neccessary and attendance will help greatly, although not mandatory.

I recently had to drop the class because I changed my major, but Professor Hallauer's knowledge of biology is outstanding. She lectures a chapter every class, and there is a lot to do outside of class (ex. flashcards, notes, online activities and quizzes). If you are majoring in a health-related area, you should take her, hands down!

She knows the material well and gives you all the tools you need to be successful in her class. Her tests are exactly what you read in your textbook and learn in class. Just make sure you go to class and read the chapter before lecture starts and you will definitely pass.

Follow her study tips. At least make chapter outlines in Microsoft word. She likes when you answer questions in class-just remember to be polite and raise your hand. She sounds authoritative, but don't let that make you think she is mean. She is a very kind, knowledgeable professor, that wants to see hard-working students succeed.

Excellent professor! Go to class, she has the word TEST written on the slides that you need to focus on. Her tests are written; multiple choice, fill in the blank, and some with short answers. If you ask for help, she is more than willing to help you on her office hours. There is one presentation, but an easy A if you follow the criteria.

She definitely is a challenging professor, but she really sets you up for success which is what makes her a great teacher. Not only do you effectively learn the course material, but you learn how to effectively be a good student which translates to other classes. I will be taking every class I can with her.

You have to go class! I didn't always attend her lectures and the highest grade I got out of the first three exams was an 80%.

Super cool prof. You can squeeze some answers out of her during exams, but don't rely on this. There was quite a bit of material, but it was all pretty straightforward. Highly recommend this prof, but don't bother with the textbook. Basically all info comes from the PowerPoints or something she said in class.

THis was my 2nd time taking bio111. She was great. The class is hard no matter who you take it with but this Prof really made me understand. Go to class, every class She clearly says what you need to know for exams

The course is very comprehensive, which makes it very difficult. Her lectures are not as helpful as the book. I read every chapter and taugh myself from the book. Connect (online) assignments are time consuming but if you do it by putting some work, you will do well on the exam. I got a 4.0. The exams are bit harder but she did curve the exams.

She is a very good professor. Her class is hard, and you have to work for it, but if you do the homework and read the book and study you will do fine. She is more than willing to help. Her lectures are long, but very in depth, and she makes them interesting and even fun. I would recommend this professor.

She really got through to me even with my dyslexia

I have taken her for Bio 101 (gives pop quizzes) and loved her so I signed up for Bio 111 (no pop q) and am glad I did. She is my favorite professor and signed up for her BIO 307 class as well. I recommend taking her, she gives random extra credit and wants you to do well. Go to class, her lectures are long but they will help you do well on exams!

Janell was my favorite professor I have had in college so far. She was so passionate and she really cared about your success. It was not an easy class by any means and there was a lot of reading and homework but she was so willing to explain and have discussions, she seemed tough at first but was a nice lady! She is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. I took her for Bio 101 and Bio 111 and bio 307. What I love about her is she wants you to be successful. She's very clear of what she expects from students. Her tests follow her powerpoints very well. She knows what she's talking about. She makes it fun and easy to learn. she talks very fast.

TAKE HER!!! She give EC and helps you in the exam like giving hints and stuff. Plus during the lectures some slides say TEST and she emphasizes and makes it sooo obvious that we should study something well and then it ends up on the exam. The presentation is a BREEZzEEE and a definite grade boost bc there's more EC there too. EASY CLASS IF YOU TRY!

I absolutely loved her! she is tough and has high expectations, but she tells you exactly what you need to know. She tell you what is going to be on the test and what won't and she gives super easy extra credit! I would take her again any time! Definitely my favorite teacher at OU.

Great prof! Bio 307 was my first 300 level course and it is hard material but she is VERY specific about what you will need to know for her exams. She will also help you out on the exams if anything is unclear. Several different EC opportunities, some just for showing up to class. With a little bit of studying, you will easily pass this class.

Professor H, was by far the best Biology professor I've ever had. she's clear cut on what you have to know, but she makes it fun. her exams are very tough, but very fair. But if you don't go to class passing will be very difficult. I loved her so much I'm taking her again for Micro.

Best professor for a biology class in my opinion. She makes things easier to understand although the lectures can drag sometimes. She tries to make them as enjoyable as possible. She's always available for extra help. Her lectures are important to attend although not mandatory. Show up, pay attention and you'll do well.

Hallauer is by far one of my favorite professors I have taken at Oakland University. She is very clear about what she expects from her students and what her exams are like. Don't let the written portions on the test scare you, they are there to help you! If you don't understand just ask her. Several extra credit opportunities! LOVED HER!

Janelle is a wonderful professor. Make sure you do your connect homework that will help your grade a ton. The class is tough but attending lecture is necessary. She is very smart and knows what she is talking about. Tough class but it is manageable.

Professor Hallauer was by far the best prof I have had so far in my college experience. She has 3 regular exams plus a final. All regular exams are 60 questions and the final is 120 (60 over new material and 60 all repeated from previous exams) Easy 4.0. The SI class really helped store the material in my long term memory too, but is optional

Was a great professor who tells you what to know and when to know it by. Of course, she doesn't usually share this information with those who don't go to class. The tests are hard but she will tell you what info you need need to know for them, if you go to class. See a pattern here? go to class and you will pass.

Professor Hallauer knows biology and how to teach it. She is clear about what will and will not be on the test. ATTEND LECTURE and pay attention and you will be fine. Teaches you biology and teaches you how to succeed in general.

By far one of the best professors I have had at Oakland University. Although I am taking this class for Micro Lab, I would recommend taking her classes all around because she knows her information. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Great teacher! Her lectures were not boring and very helpful, she focused on what we needed to know for the tests. I was prepared moving on to the next biology class. She had a good personally and was easy to talk to. Her connect assignments were long but helpful and she gave you two chance to take the connect tests. Extra credit built in

Hallauer is not to be underestimated, she knows her discipline really well & can be intimidating, HOWEVER, if you ask questions, study and put in the effort, you'll pass. Make sure you're attentive in her class, note only the exam information. Be thorough but clear cut on your presentation. Never leave an exam question unanswered, ever.

Proff Janell is awesome. It's up to you to know the material though, she lectures & does her part. Deff take her but just know she is tough & not easy. SI Pete is the MAN. Wow, he's awesome. He explains the material so well and makes the most difficult topics understanding. He really wants you to do well, I wish he was an SI for all bio classes.

She's a great professor the only negative thing i can say about her, is that she comes off way too intimidating. If you sit down and actually read the chapters, go to class and review every so often you will do great, but don't let her scare you into thinking that this will be the most difficult class you'll ever take .

Professor Hallauer is absolutely AMAZING! She is so passionate about what she does that it will inspire you to learn. While the learnsmarts are very tedious she understands that you will not need to know some of the questions. This is not an easy class, but you can definitely get a good grade with a little hard work.

If you have to take bio 111... take it with HER. Not because she's easy, because she's deff not. But because you LEARN in this class, and if you study hard you will do well. I enjoyed her lectures & never skipped because I never felt the urge to. Requires substantial amount of effort from the student, but if you want a QUALITY professor take her!

Professor Hallauer is a great professor, her class made me prepared for other classes in general not science related. She pushes you, lectures fast and provides great studying tips. All of which helps prepare you for other classes. Makes my classes now seem like a breeze. There's a reason her classes are filled so quickly. FYI never read text.

The VERY BEST Bio Proff on campus, had online homework, tests are fair game, class is CUMULATIVE, has the best SI instructor: Pete Kohnen, repeats herself so you can really understand the material, uses videos here and there, MANY PEP TALKS! :), truly LOVES Rosalind Franklin.. KNOW HER, loves when her students speak up in class, FAST PACED.

Professor Hallauer is hands down one of my favorite professors I have ever had. I wish I had the opportunity to take more classes with her. Professor Hallauer is the best bio teacher I have had at OU! Her lectures are extremely helpful and she entertains her students. She tells you in class exactly what you need to know for her exams and if you focus on her powerpoint slides that say "test" you will do great on each exam. She also gives extra credit on the first three exams and other opportunities throughout the semester. This was my first 300 level and microbiology is a challenging course, but she made it very doable. If you study and go to class, a 4.0 is possible. I highly recommend her!

The exams are half multiple choice and half short answer. There's a lot of slides but she specifies which material we should know for exams. I would take her again.

Lectures are actually enjoyable to listen to. She has lots of real world experiences & sure knows what she is talking about. Your grade is heavily weighed on exams & 1 project. Professor Hallauer was real and caring. You won't find a professor like her. She's one of a kind. We had beautiful class discussions, Powerpoints that detailed what to study, POP quizzes and even gave us an extra credit assignment. I've had a good experience with this class. It was definitely necessary.

I had a great experience with prof. H. She gives great powerpoint lectures majority of the classes that are available online, but her powerpoints presentations in class have extra slides that only people that attend class get to view. Her powerpoints should be the main focus for studying for exams. Her exams are difficult, but doable if you prepare

Loved this class! Prof H is tough but here's a tip if you feel she is going fast just being up a controversial topic. We had many class discussions and it slowed her down. Ask her questions on the tests.

Had her for lecture and lab, which meant I had her every day! I never skipped her class because I liked it. She really knows her stuff! She tells some funny stories. If you ask her she will give you study tips.

Professor Hallauer is the most passionate professor I've ever had. You can tell she loves her job and wants her students to not only pass the class, but understand what they're learning. Professor Hallauer has been one of my toughest professors, but also the best. Her attitude towards micro gave me a deeper interest for the medical field and taught me how to study smarter, not harder! Her exams can be difficult. You must attend class and study a little bit daily to do well. I would definitely take her again!

I've never had a class where I actually wanted to talk to the Professor! I feel she really prepared me for Med School. The material in this class was a lot but I hadn't felt challenged in a long time. I actually learned a ton. Her exams were very fair and she gave extra credit. Get over 100% on the presentation!

Great class! I'm excited to take her lab in the winter. She will make you work for it but she was fair and I enjoyed the class. If you are a serious student you should have no problem doing well.

All you need to do to do well is read the chapter before class and do some studying daily. Make note of her additional notes. Go to EVERY class because she gave like 10points in easy extra credit. I liked the class. She give good study advice to.

The most inspiring professor Ive ever taken class from. If you read anything negative about her, its just because those people arent willing to put the work in. Highly recommend her, taking class from her was a privilege! This was a hard class, but as long as you learn to study the right way it will be fine.

I really liked this professor however I did not enjoy her teaching method. Basically reads off of slides and there is a lot of material. Wish the lectures were focused more on helping us to understand and less on shoving as much info down your throat as possible. That being said, professor H motivated me to work harder and better my study skills.

If you're looking for a class where you will actually learn something, take this course. You really get to know her through lecture, and she will continue to motivate and inspire you to do well throughout the course. I learned how to study more effectively from her. I studied about 10-15 hours/week. She will prepare you for higher level courses.

Hallauer can seem to be mean or intimidating but she really only cares about you. I've never had a professor care so much about her students before. If you put in the effort to study and to go to lecture, you will succeed in the class.

Professor Hallauer was amazing in my opinion. Many students give her a bad rep and she seems very intimidating; however, she just wants to see her students succeed. This class is rigorous but if you put in the work you will do good. Also, do not skip class. When there is low attendance she gives extra credit.

My favorite professor Ive had at OU, shes extremely intelligent and makes class enjoyable Bc of how passionate she is about her feild. Test are hard but fair, and shes honest about that. Do the readings and do some studying everyday and youll be fine

All I can say is wow. Wish more profs were like her. You can tell that she loves what she does and she cares about the class. I don't want to disappoint her. Have never had another class like this.

She was a tough professor, but truly wanted all her students to succeed. I have a lot of respect for her and enjoyed most of her lectures, even if we did get off topic. She will scare you telling you her test are SO difficult, but in reality they are just like any other exam. The online quizzes however, are hard ahha.

She makes things relatable

This was her first time teaching genetics, I struggled in this class because of my poor time management and procrastination. A LOT of studying is involved because the course is content heavy, however she is very helpful and cares about her students a lot. Some days she gives extra credit points for attendance and some on quizzes.

I wish I was doing better in this class because it's really content heavy and requires a lot of studying. She is a great teacher and cares about her students doing well alot.

Professor Hallauer has been my favorite professor at OU so far. She is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. The other reviewees that say she is rude, are people that arent capable of viewing others opinions and are unable to have mature conversations with the class or professor about controversial material.

Shes a great professor, I cant wait to take another class with her. She really cares about her students and wants you to do well. She can be tough sometimes but its always in the students best interest.

She goes over the things in lectures super quick, so make sure your phone is ready to take pictures of slides/ record her lectures to go back and listen to. Tests are not unreasonably hard but also are not easy by any means. Overall Prof Hallauer definitely makes you work for the grade you want but is very knowledgeable and wants you to do well.

She is honestly the most inspirational teacher I've had. Her classes are information heavy and she does make you work for it, but that's something you can expect in a college class. I really struggled with chemistry and gene expression and she just made it all click. So happy because this was my second time taking the class but I had a different prof the first time.

She is really knowledgeable and passionate about her field, she is up-to-date and knows whats going on. She is very tough and does not take attendance, don't show up? It's on you, I never skipped a class and glad I haven't. She warns you ahead of time and gives extra credit if she feels it is necessary.

She's all around an amazing professor. She is kind of arrogant, but she knows what she's talking about and she worked hard to get where she is. I respect her for it. The class is NOT easy. She has very black & white grading, and she won't make any exceptions, but it's a 3000 level class. Take her if you actually WANT to learn and be intrigued.

She comes off as super intimidating at first but she really is awesome. I love that she forced us to make tables/charts for the exams because as annoying as it was... it really helped. She makes this class super interesting. There are 4 assignments due each week also.

Professor Hallauer is a great professor, and knows what she's talking about. The course is very involved, but interesting. The only negative thing is that she hardly ever responds to emails, and takes a long time to grade exams.

Im a biomedical major and Prof Hallauer was NOT more difficult than the other upper level class Ive had.I liked the stories she told, they helped me remember the info. Ask her why males should get the HPV vaccine &her genetic engineering & bioterrorism lectures blew my mind!You will learn micro with her!focus on her slides, extra credit in class!

She really helped me and I was able to use her methods in many of my classes. The class was hard but she cares and motivated the class a lot. Make sure to make the outline on the first day! She give a ton of extra credit but you have to be in class.

She gives a lot of pop quizzes but it helps you learn the material, so dont miss class. And you have to study a lot or you wont grasp the material and do your outlines because she might end up giving extra credit for it

Mrs. Hallauer is an absolutely amazing professor. Her lectures are very interesting and informative. Reading the chapter before lecture will help you a ton. Also, if you want her to learn your name make sure you participate in class and know the answers to her cumulative questions. She seems intimidating but really is a very kind and funny woman.

Absolutely loved her! She does fill the entire lecture time but it is all useful. Many students who take this class are pre-professional or trying to get into the nursing program. She tries to help you learn so you are prepared for upper level courses and prepared for the degree you want. Read the text book or the class is hard!

Get ready to study. Although the class is a lot of information to take in, Dr. Hallauer explains everything extremely well and relates a lot of the information to real life situations and the health care field which made class very interesting and engaging. Also, she is very kind and clear on what to expect on her exams.

Prof. Hallauer is a really nice person and a friendly professor. She relates a lot of things in lecture to clinical cases. There's a lot of reading in this class and her exams are timed, the exams have 2 parts, multiple question and short answer questions, but she offers extra credit but not too much, it was an interesting class.

Professor Hallauler is one of my favorite professors at Oakland University. Her lectures are passionate, interactive, and entertaining. Her exams are feasible, as she narrows down what content you need to study for each exam and what content is extraneous. I learned a great amount from her class and enjoyed the entire learning process.

Professor Hallauler is one of my favorite professors. I learned a great deal in this class. She is helpful but is realistic and expects you to behave like an adult. (She won't hold your hand and walk you through everything.) If you read her lecture slides in advance and have a tad of critical thinking, you'll be fine.

I really liked the lab. The class was easy if you read the powerpoints before class. This lab has A LOT of dangers like fire and disease causing bacteria. In my class some students clearly did NOT read and would do dangerous stuff with the bacteria like hold it near their face. Hallauer would have to tell them not to do that and they would be mad

First Professor that actually taught me how to study. I didnt realize that I had only been memorizing in my lower level classes and she takes the time to talk about learning and how to study smarter and not harder. I was in a study group for this class and some students refused to do the work (watching short simple videos and reading an easy textbook) but instead they only would use quizlet to memorize (and Hallauer tells you not to JUST do this). I can tell she cares but students want ez The class was NOT crazy hard and Hallauer even gave a study plan-USE IT

Make sure to watch her videos because she has exam questions based off of them. Lots of times professors post videos and never test over them so students skip the videos. Hallauer curves so watch the class average and where you fall. I was just a little above the average and got an A. Students were freaking out because they had a 80% b4 the curve

Attendance is not mandatory and she posts her powerpoints online, but I highly recommend attending lecture (if on campus), she explains stuff really well! Professor Hallauer is definitely an amazing professor. Biology is not an easy class, so coming in thinking you're automatically going to get an A is just unrealistic. Her class along with all other Bio classes is super lecture and textbook heavy, but Hallauer gives you all the needed materials to do well in the class. I definitely recommend her!

I took the online version and prof H does provide video lectures which were helpful. She also explains how to study for each topic so as long as you follow the tips then its not that difficult, she is fair. She does curve and offer extra credit on almost everything. Professor Hallauer is truly one of the most caring Professors to ever exist. I took the accelerated lab version of microbiology in the summer.. On the first day of lab I cried and felt overwhelmed but the talks and how supportive Professor Hallauer was truly made my experience the best. The TA for this class was great and this was a very interesting class. There are pop quizzes though, so you must always be ready. The lab reports are graded pretty harshly, but eventually you get what the TA is looking for. I've never interacted with Janell herself, but I heard that she is very rude and scary, so take this class ONLY with the TA!

She is honestly one of the best professors I've had. She cares about her students&takes the time to explain everything well if you or others don't understand something. She does assign a lot of hw tho. As long as you attend class, go through the ppt, & do the hw you'll do well in this class. I highly recommend having her for BIO 1000 AND BIO 1200!!

Prof Hallaeur is amazing! Her class is easy if you go to class, read the text, review the powerpoint, and know all processes/memory base material. She explains her hard topics very well and uses life examples. She does give pop quizzes but it is suppose to help you. Introduction Biology will always be difficult but she makes it 100% easier!

It's simple. Show up. Read the material and watch the videos prior to class. Ask questions. Fill out the lab report as you go. 99% of the time, you can answer the ENTIRE report just from the slides and the book. The questions are straight forward. Easiest lab I've taken at OU. Extremely accommodating and always has a positive attitude.

There's no written pre-lab which is nice but know the procedure VERY WELL for every lab and read the info on the student lectures for the pop quizzes. Pop quizzes can be hard, just prepare as if you had one every time lol. Keep answers on lab reports short and straightforward. Overall I enjoyed the lab and prof, 'twas a fun time!:)

Hallauer was a good professor for genetics. Exams were difficult, but everything was covered in the lectures. Lowest exam was dropped. Her weekly emails were helpful and made the online class feel more like an in person class. She wants you to succeed. There were also some extra credit points from the quizzes. I would take her class again.

She's amazing. She is clear. Answer all her question in class and you would know a lot for exams. She uses many examples and gives us clear understanding on difficult topics. Some slides says "test" but you have to come to class to see what is important. Attendance isn't required but I feel like it is vital to go instead of learning from the slides

She is very blunt which to some students may come off as condescending if they are used to being coddled. Her class is tough but if she can tell you are trying your best she will always give praise. I had Janelle for BIO 1000 & BIO 1200. She actually cares for her students success. Yes I had to spend hours on her class, but its because she wants students to succeed. Her lectures are the best she always gives examples and points out important info and makes tables to retain info. Go to office hours she will tell you how to improve and HELP.
