Ms. Whitesell is a really cool teacher. I highly recommend her to anyone. She only gives you 3 quizzes,no midterm or final exam. Also she ensures you understand everything she's teaching so there's no excuses for not getting an A.

This was my first college class ever and I was only 15 at the time so I was very nervous. She made the class pretty easy and fun for me though even though I was so nervous. I think now that I am a little older I would do much better even though I did get an A.

Janene is an excellent instructor. Her teaching methods eased the fear associated with a speech class. Only one drawback, you lose points if you exceed her absence quota (no matter the excuse). Overall, her Speech 1 class was a breeze.

Excellent teacher. I will probably take another speech class just because this teacher teaches so well. Thank god for dedictaed teachers. It is very easy to see that this teacher certainly enjoys what she does does and really wants to share her experience. It has been a pleasure:).

I was planning on going into presenting cooking demos, and found this class very good to organize and structure what needed to be said and demonstrated.

She is a great teacher! I took this as an 8 wk class. It is a lot of work, but I would not have taken it any other way. If you go to class she is clear on how speeches are to be given. Do the work you get the grade! If you hate speech (LIKE ME) don't sweat! It's a great class... you'll do fine... But you HAVE TO GO TO CLASS!

Janene is a great teacher. She is very easy to get along with and gives very clear directions for assignments. I would recommend her to anyone, even people who are afraid of public speaking. It is very obvious she loves her job.

Janene is a fantastic speech teacher. I took her during the winter break for a 3 week class. She explained how to prepare for a speech, the intro, preview, body, review and conclusion. She was very clear on the length, content and research expected for each speech. I was scared to death to speak but by the end of the class I was comfortable.

Very clear and concise. Communicates her expectations and assignments very well. Makes you feel comfortable with the process of standing before a crowd and giving a speech. I took her course over the summer and loved it.

Fun class, she lets you review possible questions for the quiz so you know what to expect. Very personable

I took speech 1 with her. She is a VERY nice and helpful woman and teacher. If you follow the clear instructions, you'll do fine in her class. The tests get exceedingly harder (but they aren't worth much), but if you study you'll pass them. She gives crazy amounts of extra credit, so there is almost no excuse for not passing this course.

Excellent instructor! One of the sweetest people you'll ever meet! Art Exhibition Design class is so much fun (repeatable 3 times if you like it that much too). You will hang up student artwork at various locations on and off campus (that means field trips). Was a joy to show up at class each day!

This is the professor to take! She is such a nice lady, and always willing to answer any questions you may have. She makes you feel comfortable in front of the class, and makes public speaking easier than it sounds. One advice to you is, go to class! If not, it WILL affect your grade.

Wonderful teacher, wonderful person. Very good at getting everyone involved. Even the person in the back corner will enjoy participating. Lectures were cleary explained. Course was well laid out. She is a very good teacher as well as an expert on speech. I believe if you can you should take her speech class whether it is a beginning or a higher level of speech. Even if you do not take her as a speech teacher get advice on public speaking from her. She makes speaking fun and exciting, plus you become more comfortable and less nervous too.

Awesome teacher! I hate speech. Janene changed my mind about that and I like it now. She is funny, witty, helpful, encouraging, and loves teaching speech. She also cares that her students succeed and are able to speak in a public setting!

Ms Janene will always be one of my favorite teachers. I went into speech 1 trembling!Its something about how smoothly she speaks that comforts you that rids you of all nervousness and fears and makes you feel like you can do it too! I hate public speaking but Janene's Intro to Speech class was surprisingly very fun. She makes it very comfortable to ease into speaking to an audience. Great teacher. Syllabus, assignments and what she expects of you are very clear. Probably one of the most enjoyed class I've ever experienced.

She's cool. Very flexible, which is awesome. (NOT WITH MISSING SPEECHES THO, SO DON'T MISS). I wish she would control the class more though. It feels like a high school classroom sometimes...A ZOO.. But she's nice and tells it how it is. She gives good critisism. She gives good info too, but boring at times.

Super fun & easy class! She doesn't grade on how well you speak in front of people, but if you follow directions. There's a required book, but I never used it. See if you can bum copies of a classmate and save some $$

Best class and teacher I've had a SCC. She grades more on the structure of your speeches than on delivery. Never used book in class and she states that at the beginning of the semester you would only use it to study for quizzes as they are based half on lecture and half on book. Overall great teacher!

Janene is such a fantastic instructor. She is always looking for different ways to explain a concept for the understanding of the class. She never asks too much of you and is extremely supportive when it comes time to actually debate.

She is very helpful and really sweet. It doesn't mean she gives you free A, but she is clear about what she wants from you and gives you good advice so that you can succeed. Her voice is so nice and she is humorous also. I love her both as an instructor and as a person.

She is an amazing speech teacher, I would like to take her again for more comm classes. I would recommend her to everyone because she will work with you, she dedicates all her time to her students, she even hands out her telephone so that students can get help from her. Her speeches are super fun but still you learn everything you need to! Amazing!

I always looked forward to coming to her class. Lectures and conversations were always interesting. Janene is hilarious and there is never a dull moment in class. I HIGHLY recommend taking her for any comm class. Class does require some effort for studying and reading, but overall it's not too hard to get an A.

Janene is the best Teacher I've had at Solano. She helps when needed. She gives out her number and never misses an opportunity to help a student in need. She makes her classes easy to understand and her lectures are far from boring. You can't fail as long as you show up and she doesn't give you a reason to skip. Best Comm teacher Ive taken.

Janene is a fabulous instructor! She made this class very fun and entertaining! As long as you do your part you will get the grade you deserve. Shes straight foward with her teaching and comm015 is such a fun class! Shes an amazing intructor in oral interpretation and she wants to see you succeed. Learning an insane amount. The teacher is clearly very passionate about public speaking and teaches in a good, helpful way. Quiz questions involving a random story from an earlier lecture is the only complaint I have.

Best teacher! Learned a lot about pubic speaking. Not going to lie was nervous about this class but it was a breeze. You become close with the class. No homework. Fun and enjoyable class! Her teaching ways are great !

She is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. She knows the material, crafts interesting assignments, gives great feedback, and is just generally a kind and intelligent person. I walked out of this class with knowledge, a sense of satisfaction, and a friend. (No really, I hang out with her outside of class). Definitely taking her again.

Prof. Whitesell, Janene as she likes to be called, helped me relax and realize that my public speaking fears were common. This class will help you with Presentations in other classes and can be very enjoyable, once you get past the fear (breath) and just follow the established order of presentation. Janene was an exceptional teacher. She really encouraged everyone in her class to get up and participate. There was a total of 7 speeches you have to give. The speeches were a lot of fun and most of the time you got to choose your own topic. She is willing to work with you so you can be the best you can be. Extra credit options (lots), caring +fun

I really enjoyed Interpersonal Communication with Janene. The class was laid back, but I still learned a lot. She lectured, but most of the class was open discussion. Before quizzes, she splits the room in half and lets each side ask the other potential test questions. I would take another class with her if I was still at Solano.

She's literally the best, cares for each student and helps them with what they need.

Janene is a wonderful Professor and gives great lectures. She focuses very minimally on ppt and much more on explanation and understanding of material. The only thing I hate is she doesnt use Canvas so I didnt know what my grade was until the end. She also grades extra credit in hearts which is strange. Still, a great class.

Best communications teacher at solano.

She does a lot of interactive activities. You really get to know your class well and she is just truly outstanding and is willing to answer any questions you have to ask, so don't be afraid to ask them! I want to take her again for a different communications class this upcoming semester.

I took her for comm10, and I am so glad I did! She is seriously the best comm professor ever. Her class set up didn't even feel like class sometimes, because she makes the environment so "homey". She is awesome, take you comm class with her, if you want a fun class, but also want to earn. I know so much about Interpersonal Comm now its crazy.

Great prof; knows exactly what she wants from you which makes it easy for you to get a great grade, gives great feedback and is very welcoming (need more practice? She got u)

I have taken 3 of her communication classes over the years. I took comm 1, group communication, and intercultural communication. She is an amazing teacher, clear notes and expectations. Reading is required but its minimal. She wants you to do well and helps with whatever you need.

Janene was by far the greatest professor I have ever had. Her class is the type that you go to with a smile on your face. I have learned so much from her. If there was one professor I had to recommend to every single person, this is the one. If you have the opportunity to take a class with her, please do.

Janene is great at what she does. All of the debates were a lot of fun! If she sees that you are trying your best, you'll do well. Debate topics are usually pretty light (so nothing to get heated arguments over). We switched online halfway through b/c of covid, but debates actually worked really well online through Zoom calls. Amazing! Public speaking is a great fear for many, but Janene is so sweet and caring that all the fear melts away! Attendance counts, but, you wont find yourself wanting to miss this class. The course is super engaging yet fun and educational. Youll even find yourself actually missing public speaking after taking this course with Janene.

I'm not a big fan of public speaking but this class wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Get nervous speaking in front of people? She allows you to pre-record your speeches to help make you comfortable, and she is a fair grader. But WATCH OUT FOR HER QUIZZES!! They are extremely tricky and she knows it. Other than that, a really good class

TAKE THIS CLASS!! She is the best person in and outside of teaching. She has jokes for days and really makes the class fun. She is not a tough grader, and she really cares about her students. She is by far my favorite college teacher I have ever had, and I am so lucky we got to know each other better. You won't regret taking her class.

Kindest teacher ever! Will teach you so much & open your perspective to other cultures & ideas. Seminars are so much fun. Janene truly enjoys her job & getting to know her students. We had different political views but she was ultimately respectful of mine. She's accessible outside of class- office hours, emails, etc. Very understanding. TAKE HER!

Dr. Whitesell's class was a great speech class for those who are not fond of public speaking. She makes it as relaxed as possible.. She lets you pre-record your speeches, so if you are struggling in real time, you can perfect your speech and play it for the audience. Beware of her quizzes though. They are tough, but not worth a ton of points.

Love Professor Whitesell!!Very understanding and made zoom fun. She gave the option to record your speechs or do them live which was nice!! Super friendly and always put a smile on my face. Quizs can be difficult but if you read the chapters and take adequate notes it makes it easier. Made public speaking fun and exciting!!

Honestly an amazing Professor. I wish I could take her class again! Very understanding and will help you out when needed. The only sucky thing is canvas doesn't like how she grades. So at first, it will seem like you aren't doing well but in actuality, you are doing amazing. Just need to check in with her for updates.

Janene is very caring & understanding. I'm not a huge fan of speeches, especially presenting in front of people, but Janene is very encouraging and gives great feedback that makes you feel both motivated and like she actually cares for you to do well in her class. Quizzes are VERY specific but you won't get a lot of quizzes over the semester anyway

Maaaaaan... Janene is an amazing professor. She replies quickly and she genuinely cares about her students. This class was challenging but if you apply yourself.. you'll get an A. It is really about participation. The tests are a bit difficult but there are many chances for extra credit. I hope your classmates & experience are as dope as mine were!

Janene is is an amazing professor! The grading was a bit confusing at first but she explains it well.There are also LOTS of extra credit opportunities. She really cares about her students and is easily reachable via Canvas or through her office hours. Very understanding. TAKE HER! 10/10 would recommend! (I wish I could make longer reviews!!)

Hands down one of the best professors ever!! She was so amazing and she made all of us in the class feel welcomed and comfortable. She does a great job at working with us to get us started on debates and would do in class lectures at times but most were video lectures which was good because we could go at out own pace. She used a free pdf textbook

I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed this class. There are no shortcuts. To succeed in this class, you have to do some research on the topics, work with your group and learn not only how to debate but how to communicate with your classmates in professional and respectful manners. You will learn it all, because you will have the BEST professor.

I've taken two of her classes and loved them both! She is an excellent professor that teaches in a way that is suitable for everyone from all walks of life. She also has a great sense of humor! I would highly recommend taking her class.

I am close to finishing her class and I enjoyed her class so much. She is a great teacher, she's patient, works with student's schedules, great sense of humor, easy to communicate with, and very understanding. There were a couple of times I had to ask for extension on speeches and she gave them with no issues. I recommend her class!

Janene was an amazing professor. A few tips on taking her class is to make sure to attend her class, it might be difficult for other people to stay committed in attending the class but it is actually helpful. She gives advice and good lecture that will actually help you for you speech, midterms and finals. Definitely worth it taking her class.

A very charismatic professor, a lot of the class depends on attendance since what she lectures will be important to know what she expects for presentations. Her lectures were never boring and easy to follow. By the end of the semester, I did not feel terrified to give a speech like I did the first one we gave.

Took Janene in her intercultural communication class as well as her dramatic interpretation class and she was amazing in both of them. Each day I actually found myself looking forward to being at school rather than dreading it. She gives amazing feedback, creates a friendly class setting, do not miss out on taking a class with Janene.

I just adored this class! I had Janene for last spring semester and she just charmed everyone :) Very charismatic and really knows what she's doing. Everyone leaves this class being a better speaker than when the first come in!

Amazing professor! She made me feel so welcome! I was terrified taking this class because of my anxiety, but she makes you feel so comfortable! She gives great feedback and makes you feel confident about your work. The only thing I didn't like was that she added your grades in at the end of the semester so i was nervous about that.

Textbook is free. This class such a good time. There is a constant uplifting atmosphere and true sense of community among classmates. Janene has genuine passion for public speaking and gives great feedback. You will come out of this class a better public speaker, even if you're shy. The speeches are varied and usually run around 2-4 minutes long.

Professor Whitesell truly cares for her students. She takes the time to help each of her students! The speeches are easy and fun! Professor Whitesell takes the time to make sure her students feel comfortable around each other. I felt very comfortable going up and speaking even though I normally have stage fright! I highly highly recommend!

Ms. Janene was great! She always had a good spirit and was easy to communicate with. Her class felt very supportive and she did an amazing job preparing us for speeches. I've always been very nervous presenting in front of a class, but her class really helped! She assigns double the speeches any other professor does, but it's so worth it! The only homework you have is preparing your speech and occasionally studying for a quiz, which she gives you all the study material for. I learned a lot and would take her again!

Ms. Janene was not only an amazing teacher but, well spoken and there for her students. Presentint isn't everyones safe zone, but she brought us together to make our environment comfortable. Ms. Janene is encouraging, fun and overall a great individual. I highly recommend this class just to take as an elective or to step out your comfort zone.
