Loves film more than life itself. Intro can be hard with her as a teacher, but you will learn a lot. Funny, caring, sweet.

Overall, a pretty fun class and we watched some great films.

As a graduating senior, I have had many English dept. teachers and Cutler is great. She is fair and very smart --knows her stuff and is way cool. She also knows her basketball which more than you can say for most of the other teachers.

any of you complaining about how hard her class is get out of college. her class is interesting and she is a very excellent teacher. its unfair to criticize her for expecting you to learn what she teaches. I learned so much from her class

Great prof. who points out all important aspects of the film you just watched. If you actually show up, and don't fall asleep, the class is a breeze. She drills all important items into your head.

she is a great professor, her lectures are clear and to the point, and she tests on exactly what she thought. film selections are great and the final film ties it all together. one of my favorite classes of all time.

Taught me alot. Made melook at certain aspects to the film that i never even considered. Easy teacher and way down to earth.

dr cutler is a good professor. i had her for 2 film classes and for an english class. she definitely knows what shes talking about, but tends to cater to a select few in the class. and just a side note, she looks a little like a muppet

Probably the best professor I've had at MSU. She is so down to earth and makes the class tolerable. I learned so much from her. She is also so personable as well, will just hang and talk to anyone.

Dr. Cutler has a nururing, warm personality. She has a great depth of knowledge which she manages to convey in a completely accessible and enjoyable manner. She's the best!

Decent prof. The movies were pretty boring, tough not to fall asleep. But Prof. Cutler knows her stuff and is fairly interesting to listen too. Tests are NOT easy, you'll need EXCELLENT notes to do well. I got an A- but I did have to work for it.

Dr. Cutler is the best professor I have had. I had her for a writing class and she taught me so much, not only how to write, but how to express yourself in your writings. Now I have her for film. If it wasn't for her humor and sincerity, the class would not be as good. She is also very fair.

Man, I took Simon and got a D. He sucks major balls, but besides that I'm retaking it now w/Cutler; just got a 'B' on the midterm exam. She is much clearer, helps out better, and makes it a point to make her lessons clear. She is easyville compared to Simon. Long live Cutler's intro 2 film class

She's awesome, really funny, nice lady. Says somec razy, great things sometimes but knows her stuff and makes class so much fun, while learning about the genres, too.

If you are really into film take this coure otherwise forget it. Film history and shot sizes can be confusing for people expecting only film content analysis (people sitting next to me moan every week).

its a good class and you'll learn stuff, but sadly forget it. when meeting once a week its hard to remember things, so if you take good notes you'll do fine. if not i would reconsider

As an aspiring writer, I have to say this class added a whole new dimension to my writing. As a casual film watcher, this class has me watching films in a whole new way. Take good notes, keep your eyes on the screen, and you'll do fine. She's not easy, so if you do well, you earned it.

Very easy class. Watch film for the whole class. Three exams which are multiple choice. If you go to class and take notes, easy A. Cutler also has a sense of humor, funny lady.

DO TAKE HER! she's funny, direct, and helps you see beyond the entertainment value of film. exams are easy if you show up to class and pay attention to the film and discussions. the films she chooses for the course are excellent - hope you can value that, and see beyond the fact it's b+w or old...

Great professor! She is funny, nice and a complete genius when it comes to films. Take her, even if you're not into film - you'll learn A LOT! I was not into movies with sub titles, but her class has changed the way that I view them forever.

Dr. Culter was a very good teacher. Her exams can be tough. There are 3. The first and last were multiple choice. The 2nd was a shot analysis. She helped me out a lot since I am not a native speaker of English. Despite what people say, she does NOT look funny or like a muppet. Even though her class was nearly three hours long, I was never bored.

Promotes thinking more than focused on writing- not a tough grader, but really wanted you to get something out of every lesson.

Dr. Cutler is the best in the department! It does not get any simpler than that. I ADORE her. I learned more from her than anyone in life. If you take her, consider it a gift. Best moments of college were in her class!

If "u" write like that guy, "u" will be borrrred. But if you have half a wit in your head, Dr. Cutler is the best there is. Her films are funny and interesting, and so is she. If you've ever /heard/ of Alfred Hitchcock, you should be in her class.

She's not easy persay, but if you show an interest in the class and participate, the outcome will be rewarding. I got along with her well in the class and her teaching assistant Evan was good for extra help. People should stop mocking the class; she IS the definitive intro to film teacher at montclair.

Seriously she is a good teacher...but she's definitely weird. I asked her for an extension on a midterm which she granted because she can be cool like that, but then went into this whole psychoanalysis about how i must not like myself enough to not speak in class. freaky woman. take the class only if you dont mind being weirded out.

She is a pretty good Professor! You need to pay attention to the lecture!! The tests were pretty easy if you went to the review session. I took her for a gen ed, and was happy with my choice!

I will tell you how to do well in this class, write down the lecture notes, watch the films pay attention. The tests are about the films so don't try reading all of the assignements just know the vocabualary words they go with each film for that week, (you'll know what i mean when you see the syllubus). Review the films before the test.

this class is weak, the room is way to hot and the seats are old and small. Sleep threw the movies and then take notes when the professor speaks. Shes cool, the class would b alot better if it wasnt in CA-135

She's very knowledgeable and passionate about film, which makes the films fun to watch. The tests are very hard though and you really need to dedicate a lot of time to study for them. Unless you want a D like I got on the first exam.

People expect a film class to be easy, so maybe they are disappointed to find out it is a serious course. But the professor curves every exam so more people can do well. Cutler is great.

first exam was ridiculously hard but she curves a lot. listen to what she says before every film. if she says it fast write it down. she mentions it bc it's gunna be on the test. you have to attend class bc you need to watch all the films. i slept a lot during the films, but did well. participating is the best thing you can do. never used the book.

love this class. she is funny and extremely intelligent. don't buy the book. 3 tests. study for tests 1 and 3, you don't need to study for test 2. take this class!

I LOVE HER! Seriously one of the best film/english professors at montclair! Attendence is mandatory, but she makes class fun and enjoyable. Talks to you, not at you and always takes your opinion. I wish she was teaching somthing other than intro next semester because I would love to take her again!

history of film, you'll watch movies that were the "firsts" ie. first sound, first crosscutting. Read book B4 class, study vocab THOROUGHLY and re-watch movies @ home on youtube for the midterm and final. then theres a test on deconstructing a film sequence: watch 10m of film and basically write a technical screenplay for what you watched.

She chooses movies that specifically can be drawn on by watching later movies. The second test is easy (go to the study group and you'll be fine) but the other two are HARD so take copious notes. You will learn so much about film though and will have a much better perspective. If you love film as an art, you'd be stupid not to take her.

pursuits of english is no easy class, it's the only one required, however dr. cutler teaches it for you, and she's always willing to help clarify things. the class is not difficult if you actually participate. i was intrigued in the discussions and did very well. highly recommend, take this class!

LOVE HER! This is the second class that I've taken with her and I can not wait for the third. She really tries to get you to look at literature and film in a different way. Her class is always fun and entertaining, if you have to chance to take a class with Dr. Cutler don't hesitate!

This too was my second class with her and I'd gladly take a third. For a 400 level course (on Martin Scorsese) it was actually not that hard, but you can't sleep through the movies and expect to do well. If you have no problem with literary analysis this class will be a breeze, just as long as you keep up with Blackboard (Which is heavily used).

If you have no interest in film than you will find yourself really lost and bored.But Cutler is cool and she understands that all students may not get it so take her she's worth it. If you participate it helps and shows that you care about your grade. Raise your hand as much as you possibly can!

Very fun course to take with a teacher that has a great personality. Just make sure to study hard on exams and go to the shot by shot workshop!

She's an absolutely amazing teacher. She's fun and enthusiastic and she's aware of the information she's teaching. By that I mean she's aware to fact that students hate documentary day. Her class is easy as long as you pay attention. Tests are complicated but as long as you listen to her you'll be more than fine.

Cool prof. but if you are not interested in Film your killing your self. The test are really hard,but gives review sheet. Some of the films shown are not interesting, must buy the book, 3 exams go to the exam 2 work shop it WILL HELP YOU! OVerall if your not majoring in film dont bother taking this class if its only for a GNED.

As a film major, taking Cutler's intro to film course can still be a tedious task. She convey's a lot of information, and it is up to you to pay attention and write down notes, but she makes sure that you UNDERSTAND what she is saying. If you use her study guides, and put in effort, you will succeed.

You have to attend every single class, as every class is a film you need to take notes on. Lots and lots of terminology to study, long class. Tests aren't extremely hard, but require lots of studying. This class is definitely not an easy A and isn't about enjoying films. Professor Cutlet i've heard is better than the other film professors though

Probably one if the best professors at the school. Had her for 4 of my 6 film minor classes. Tells you exactly what she wants. Short assignment each week on the films you critique in class. Each class is very straightforward and what you'd expect film directors us about 3 directors and genres is about 3 genreS. Not an easy A but fun and interesting

Most of the semester we just watch movies, and there's not a lot of lecturing, and mostly discussions. But overall I really enjoyed both the class and professor. However, the exams are kinda hard, and if you miss class, you'll be in trouble!

I was not interested at all in film before taking this class, but Dr. Cutler is amazing at teaching this class. You will watch a bunch of movies so that is good. Just put in the work and you'll be fine!

Janet Cutler deserves the world. She is an amazing professor. Her sense of humor is great, she really carries the class by cracking some jokes every now and then. You NEED to go to class. Your notes are your bible. Don't buy the book, we never used it. We mostly discussed the films so PAY ATTENTION! Try not to fall asleep bc the lights are off

TAKE HER SHE IS GREAT AND WILL MAKE WATCHING MOVIES SO MUCH MORE FUN. SHE KNOWS HER STUFF. TAKE NOTES AND DON'T MISS THE CLASSES. SHE BROUGHT HER THERAPY DOG FRISKY TO OUR LAST CLASS IT WAS AWESOME THE DOG LICKED MY HAND, I LOVED THIS CLASS.

I've taken her for every ENFL course I've needed. Reluctant to take anyone else. Weekly discussions after each film viewing is your HW, but it takes 4-6 minutes to complete. A midterm paper and a Final paper make you watch a film outside of class, but the options are typically great.

She is super nice and so funny. Though the class is 3 hours long, it usually went by pretty quickly unless she shows a boring film, which happens sometimes. Overall it's a pretty easy class as long as you take notes since the tests are open notebook.

I would absolutely suggest taking her for ENFL208! She lets you take notes with your laptop, but does not like you to have your phone out in class. There is a midterm and a final (both are open notebook) but they are not easy exams. The movies in the beginning are boring-they get better. Sign in for attendance. Participate for a better grade.

You really have to show up for every class and definitely take notes. She's a really enjoyable professor, and if you participate in the discussion during class, it will really benefit you.

Shes okay but the class is really boring tbh, you have to take notes and pay attention. Its hard to watch some movies because they are so boring! exams are kinda tough but she is overall nice and gives extra credit. I would take another class unless you really are into film.

I was really hesitant to take another film class considering my first one was so boring it put me to sleep, but this class was actually tolerable. Shes really funny & her lectures are pretty good. Movies in the beginning can be really boring but get better towards the end. Take good notes since test can be difficult! Participation helps your grade

Dr. Cutler's class was very interesting. I learned a lot about camera angles. A few years later I still sometimes can't watch films without remembering or noticing the shots! A little warning: she does show films with explicit content and nakedness sometimes. She shows it how it is. Notes are everything. It's hard to know what your total grade is.
