She's got attitude...so this class isn't as boring as it could potentially be. Unfortunately, she speeds through her lectures like Speedy Gonzalez on pep pills and gives students a totally inadequate time to write down notes.
she's a cool teacher, she'll make you laugh. however, she's so focused on getting you all the information that you don't have time to even understand what she is saying. the test are okay not too hard.
She's a nice person, but a horrible professor. I had her for two classes the same quarter and we covered the same material even though the classes were completely unrelated. Everything wrong in soceity is because white people exist. She makes anyone who is white feel guilty for it. That sucks!
To be honest, shes funny, shes a nice lady, but she gives bad lecture...shes always in a rush, and says her tests are EASy, but everyone ends up getting like a C average. Only because her wording on the test is horrible. She puts up terms that werent even on the study guide.
She's not a very good professor. She says one thing and does another with her grading. She tries to cram way too much information at you at the last minute and expects you to know it all for the test that was usually only a couple of days later. Stay away from this professor if you can, she will only bring you misery, especially for a stats class.

She is a bad teacher. I dont even think she knows what she is talking about most of the time.
shes a pro. so she thinks her students are like her. thats why her tests are impossible. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR. OF ALL COST.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I"VE EVER HAD!!!!! Horrible in teaching the material....horrible in test material....she gives you about 50 minutes to complete a test that should take two hours!! Take this class with another professor otherwise you will be frusterated the entire quarter!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay away!
she can be a little confusing, but i've always enjoyed how animated she was. I had her for 110A before too. I got an A in both classes, but most people don't really like her. Oh well.
shes called a professor?
she was ok....all questions were answered, a lot of material to study though.
She is awful! Her classes are a complete waste of time, because all she does is go on rants about how it sucks to live in our society.....how this woman got her PhD, I will never understand.
I don't agree with most of the reviews here. Even though her lectures were taken straight out of the book, everything was laid out in an easy-to-understand manner. And hell, she was funny! Even though the material sucked (she couldn't help that) she put some of her funny spin to it. Tests were easy if you read the stupid book.
I don't believe that a teacher should give so many opinions if she is teaching alongside of the book. It's no wonder she is a part-time teacher. She makes too many references about people cheating. On the tests, she puts in questions that are not related to anything. Society sucks because of her.
hard subject. hill is great very interesting ideas and hilarious.

Her exams are not easy because she did not put any "important" ideas on the tests... we watch lots of videos and most the the exams are base on the videos. In addition, the class was very unorganized...she did not finish lectures and we have exams based on those lectures. She did not even provide notes. ( you need to study by yourself!)
Notes similar to book. Some are not, requires reading before lecture. Tests have some simple questions: terms and names, but the short essays are related to a lot of movies, Lowen article's, and other article's she has in her vast collection. You have to remember all concepts and dissect them from the articles using specific examples. READ A LOT :(
SHe was a great teacher and made the topic very interesting. She knows her stuff and teaches in her creative ways and funny examples
She's really funny and passionate about sociology. She's really nice and truly cares about her students. Also, she's much more concerned about you learning then making you struggle for your grade. She shows alot of films and video clips though, so don't ditch class
She is a very unorganized teacher and I was very disappointed. She gave me a C for some weird reason on growl when I actually got a B+ for my overall grade. I think the topic of Sociology is great but I think she made it seem boring than it really is. Otherwise her test were somewhat easy, but I understood most of the material through the textboo
She was funny, passionate and made the subject interesting. She was very easy and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.
Assignments= 5 (1-2 pg) critical responses in which you have to analyze the readings and the many videos that she shows. Attend class on regular basis & pay attention to videos, they r usually part of short answer questions on her test, which are pretty simple if you pay attention throughout the course.
She was interesting and class attendance is important.
She is a very interesting professor and is quite entertaining. However, she is extremely unorganized. I felt like I didn't really learn anything new in this class but she grades fairly easy.
awesome prof., very funny in her lectures!!! take her for all sociology class...i recommend her.
Dr. Hill may be funny and entertaining in class, but she is very unorganized. There is too much reading for anyone to even remember the titles of the articles. She is one of the worst professors I have ever had!
hard to understand and doesnt really teach. Easy grader
Very passionate about her topics. Funny and entertaining to listen to. Class is passable if you read the study guide.
She's a very good lecturer. I didn't mind being in there at all. It is important to attend class, the videos and stories she tells in class shows up on the tests. Grading is done by TAs, so be nice to yours! Just make sure you over the review sheets before each test and you'll have no problem getting a good grade.
I really enjoyed taking this class. I learned soo much. Dr. Hill knows how to keep her audience interested and her class is an easy A. Just make sure you get a good/easy TA cuz a lot of points come from ciritcal responses and also they correct the short answer section to the exams. Overall.. very easy material even though there is a lot of stuff bu
She doesn't post up lectures in iLearn or slow down on lectures, so you can either study at home or just listen to her at the lectures. Yet, she does say what will be in the exams. As days pass by more, fewer people come.
Very entertaining. Always cracking jokes and making the class revelant to the student. A little indecisive when it came to deadlins.
She's completely incompetent. Sociology can be an interesting subject, but she makes it abysmal. Her socialist overtones get tiresome quickly and she really likes to invent her own words. How this woman ever received a PhD is something I will never understand.
Very interested and dedicated to her work. She can borderline on being prechy, but has good reasons for what she is praching about. If you can get by that, and work hard she's great.
Preaches to the class the whole time... the whole f-ing class is biased and based on nothing concrete. The textbook and supplementary readings are all subjective. Never went to class, I always came out pissed off for having learned nothing. Hill is just a bitter person who needs to take a few more English classes.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER. TESTS HAVE OFF THE WALL QUESTIONS. SOME OF THE TESTS HAD CLASS AVERAGE SCORE OF UNDER 60%. IF NOT FOR THE TA THIS WOULD HAVE REALLY A POOR EXPERIENCE
very easy class. show up and listen. read the chapter once, and review notes for midterm and final. very fair class. most complaints come from people not wanting to do any work. easy way to boost GPA
Well, this professor wouldn't be too bad if she didn't preach the whole time. She brings up really good points but the problem is, she assigns TOO MANY READINGS as if her class is the only one we're taking. Don't take Jennifer as a T.A, she's just as disorganized as the professor!
Basically tells you to read the 3 books which she does not go over in class. Lectures are her entertaining you with stories that aren't really useful, but you need to know. Quizzes were ridiculously hard, averages of 12-15 out of 25 and assigns an obscene amount of writing for a 4-unit course. Very disorganized, and rarely in her office for OH.
unfair grader, unorganized, biased and dont expect her to email you if you need help or be around for office hours.
Read every assigned reading! Her tests cover details from a wide range of the readings. There are essays or quizzes every two weeks, so don't put the readings off.
I was offended by her lecture at times. She tends to be very hypocritical in her lectures, but always in favour of the underdog (black, poor, etc). Sociology isn't about preaching in favour of the underprivileged, it's about viewing ALL sides of the issue at hand and making YOUR OWN judgment.
Dr. Hill is a good teacher. Her tests are hard because it's not only multiple choice, you actually have to answer short answers and think critically but that is how you learn. Sociology is great.
She was unorganized, habitually late, and her syllabus was incomprehensible. Her TAs didn?t even know what was going on most of the time. Her lectures lacked cohesion and relevance to the subject she had chose for that day. I attended every class and never took notes. I gained absolutely nothing from her course. I don?t recommend her by any means.
Professor Hill is on top of her game! It is an easy class to pass if you attend lecture/discussions reguraly,do your work, and study for the midterms and final. She is a great Professor!
An entertaining character but a terrible teacher. Lectures were worthless because she basically preached the entire time about why our country sucks. TONS of reading from which assignements and tests were based. Avoid this "teacher" unless you have to take this class.
Extremely conscious and not afraid to say the truth. Historically, relates topics which makes it more believeable. If you don't like it then Soc is not for you. Reading is a must.
She rambles off topic. Doesn't really teach according to text. Read a lot from other books. Very opinionated and ideal. Somewhat impactful and funny, but not helpful to prepare students a better understanding of the course.
she is an ok teacher
she is an ok teacher but it is somewhat hard to understand
Enthusiastic but INCREDIBLY unorganized. Additionally runs off on a tangent and exams generally do not follow the study guide. Unless you read the book cover to cover, you're safe.
She is very enthusiastic. Interesting class and not hard to pass.
She is awesome when it comes to lecture delivery but she is VERY DISORGANIZED. She never discusses the assigned readings...most will not enjoy her.
Favouring minorities doesn't make you a sociologist. She took the concepts she taught us were "wrong" and used them to teach us how bad everybody who isn't a minority is. She'd make a wonderful preacher, but is a pretty lousy professor. She wasn't very open minded, imo, and I wouldn't recommend her.
She LOST my test. She might loose yours to. VERY unorganized and unprofessional
I sat in on her lecture today and this woman is insane. I didn't know that a sociology class was the same as a church sermon. I've never heard "Jesus" so much in one day. For an educated woman you would think she would be more professional and keep her biases to herself. She puts her beliefs into the course which isn't how it should be.
I took Intro to Sociology and Sociology of Gender with her and...she doesn't change one bit. Intro to Soc was just all about how blacks are mistreated - Soc of Gender was exactly the same, maybe focusing on black women a bit more. Hill is funny at times ("mmm hmmm") but I think you don't learn jack squat from her. Depend on your TA to learn!
This professor spends the entire lecture trying to passher ideas off as facts. Whenit comes time to take the testonly 25%of the test has anythingto do with the chapters, and a large majority is simplywhat she said or did in lecture. She does not test us on ourknowledge of sociologybut rather our knowledgeof her opinions and our attendance inclass.
Ridiculous. She has this tedious tendency to revert to "ghetto slang" at which time I stop paying attention due to her nonsensical rambling. Her lectures usually consist of her criticizing the rich, whites, the government, etc. She's not a sociologist; she's a socialist. I honestly don't understand how on earth she was allowed to teach here.
Janet Hill seems at first to be an inspirational teacher but each class she spends the full hour talking in a circle about nothing. She favors stories about black people. You don't learn anything in lecture so you have a lot of reading to do on your own but she uses weird stories from lectures on the midterm. I don't recommend her.
no no no bad bad bad!!! stay away!! i've had to take her class twice and soc is my major :/ read the book yourself and don't sit in the 1st 3 rows unless you wan to be used as a example, which those examples make up a big part of the test so go to lecture but be prepared to hear her preach about her opinions and not the actually sociology.
The class was really easy, all you have to do is read the book, if you dont read your screwed because she tends to go off topic. A lot of people do not like her teaching method but its keeps you awake and makes you laugh. As long as you do all the assigned readings and attend lecture the class is easy.
She is quite a character. I must say I did not find her lectures/teaching methods boring... very interesting. However, she is EXTREMELY unorganized. She was always late to class, and we were always behind schedule. Overall, it's a fairly easy class so long you keep up with the reading. My only advice would be to NOT fall behind on reading.
i liked it... i mmean she told the truth people are just too narrow minded to learn it.. i know because before i even went into this class i already knew most of the facts she tried to prove
I love professor Hill she is super funny! Her tests were kind of hard because she wouldn't discuss the readings but if you understand the overall picture you should be fine. You don't have to agree with her.But a lot of what she says is true in our society. She is hilarious and my T.A, Sheila I'm not sure if that's how you spell it, she was AMAZING
fun to listen to... but EXTREMELY unorganized, late to class, off schedule w/syllabus, ALOT of work that you have to do yourself because what she teaches in class is NOT what she asks for on exams! Be careful when taking her classes, seems easy but not.
unfortunately had her for 2 classes in the same quarter! same as one below...unorganized, late, and the workload is heavy..you have to do ALL the readings, not even attend class, basically teach yourself! if you don't have to take her class..don't!
She is the worst! Try to avoid her. No matter what soc class you take she ALWAYS shows the same old videos. She has some serious issues. She is also VERY VERY unorganized, she always leaves her class and is really bias. She tries to be funny but she's not. She's a preacher but never lectures about the book. She lost my friends test!
This class SOC 174 was supposed to be a class about Socialization and Personality and Mrs. Hill treated the course as a race and ethnicities lecture. I did the best I could to take the good with the bad, and utilized my TA in order to get by. She needs to be talked to, or reprimanded, or fired, I leave the rest in the hands of the administration
Towards the end of the quarter Mrs. Hill told the class explicitly that she does not care about her teacher evaluations, which just provides further evidence about her inability and unwillingness to respect anyone but herself or to perhaps even think for a moment that she could be wrong.
or not even let them finish their presentation because she does not agree with their interpretations, when in fact the given material obviously has multiple interpretations. This was extremely difficult to deal with because she would constantly waste class time with her speeches about how unbiased and open minded she was.
Mrs. Hill is unable to respect anyone else but herself in the classroom, some examples include: requiring students to give extensive presentations in front of the class, then constantly interrupting them and go off on tangents for 3-10minutes and then let the student start again, and then interrupt them again,
worst teacher ever. avoid avoid avoid. never lectures on the 5-6 textbook/books she assigns and is completely unorganized. changes up grade rankings last minute and exams drastically are dropped or appear so be prepared..oh wait, you cannot. there is no way to prepare for this class. lectures are not boring but are IRRELEVANT!
Got a B- in the class. Have to listen to her lectures and read the book a bit. I studied the book before every midterm and did fairly well. She's really interesting. I'd take her for 001.
I thought the class was pretty easy. If your the type of person that needs organized tructure and you need to keep to the schedule don't take this class. She's usually off the dates given in the sylabus and goes off topic but i though it was really interesting because she talks about life more than the book. Personally I like her she's really funny
Really easy class as long as you read and keep up with assignments and do well on the midterm and final of course. She tends to rant on about race and ethnicity though and talks a lot about the struggle of Blacks. I thought it was interesting and she's really funny so you wont be bored. Easy class
Professor Hill is very wise and you can learn a lot from her. But you won't necessarily learn much about what the class is supposed to be about because Dr. Hill rarely touches on the actual course topic, textbook, or numerous readings in lecture. She is very disorganized and never ordered the text for the bookstore or put the books on reserve.
If I wanted to learn about her family and relationships, I would've registered for "Professor Hill's Family & History". I actually registered and paid tuition to learn about "Couples and Families" & all I learned from her was stuff about her family. As for her powerpoints, they were straight from the book and she didn't follow her syllabus. At all.
Her lecture are VERY useless. The class is basically essay based until the final. I failed the final and still ended up with an A in the class. The discussion counts for almost your entire grade.
Dr. Hill is completely undeserving of a PHD. Her self-absorbed singular lectures simply involve her aggregiously misinformed blabbering about what she thinks are social problems. She does not follow a syllabus, is allergic to grading, and loves to disrespect her students. I encourage anyone taking her class to attempt a power point presentation...
Anybody taking this class, should prepare to be disrespected. Students are required to construct a power point presentation and spend hours on it only to never present. THis is because Dr. Hill clearly respects her students so much as that she thinks that it's necessary to interrupt constantly throughout the presentation's duration.
i love her style, you get used to it but she does stray away from her actual lesson
I took her for a class called Corrections & she is the worst professor to hit UCR. Don't take the class if she's teaching it. She's not organized & she hardly talks about what we should have been learning. She's not available in her office hours or through email
Prof. Hill should be a Minister not a teacher, she spends all her time preaching the same thing over and over. She never stops talking and like to interrupt you. She goes off topic and spends Lecture reading to the class from like 3 different books. She does everything in essay format, her midterm is like 18 pgs. worth of essays.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She preaches instead of teaching. She becomes violently angry when you express an opposing view. She included very specific questions on the test to see if you remember statistical facts, which I don't really mind, but her questions were ridiculously specific. AVOID TAKING HER CLASS.
very passionate about what she is teaching. at times seems like more of a preacher than a professor but she is very engaged and wants students to do well in the course. lectures can be a little on the dull side but she shows lots of videos and often interacts with students to show examples. very opinionated.
So basically you're going to love this class if: you believe white people are the root of all evil, you hate conservative people, you think the American government is out to get you, or you don't like people who make large amounts of money.
Dr.Hill is very smart, she's also very funny. She truly cares about ALL her students. She's the best teacher i have ever had. If you believe that everyone should have equal rights then this is the class for you! She's AMAZING!
really interesting class. shes very passionate about what she's teaching, which makes you want to learn more. her midterms and finals are all essay questions. THEY ARE EXTREMELY LONG but i thought they were easy. you just have to read to get an A. take it if you suck at scantron tests!
She constantly preaches the same messages over and over and over again. She's unprofessional, the study guides are horrendous in how 1/3 of them aren't even covered in the course material. She gets behind in her lessons cause she's so busy preaching stuff she's been saying since Day 1. I really don't know why she's still employed here.
worst professor at UCR by far. all she does is preach and preach about the same topic every single lecture. Her midterm and final was ridiculous. 18 pg midterm, and for the final she gave us 1 long essay question to do at home and she was going to pick 4 out of 9 short (2pg) prompts we were to write about in class. DONT TAKE HER BY ANY MEANS!!!!
How can you have 89.57 percent and not get an A-. That's all I have to say.
She was great. I learned a LOT about myself and the world I live in. I strongly recommend her. Do the readings and you will be fine.
Really great professor and she motivates you about how the society worksa and just study from the notes and lecture and you will be fine for midterms and finals
Terrible professor. EXTREMELY unorganized. Rants in class about her personal life. I'm sorry, the death of your sister is terrible and all, but it has nothing to do with your class. Very unscientific approach. The questions on the midterm and finals are like multiple choice on her autobiography.Too much about her, too little about the field.
If u can't pass professor Hill's SOC001 class ur stupid. If u find her lectures pointless ur naive. 3 simple multiple choice exams. Questions come from readings/notes and examples she gives in lecture. A few short essays. Weekly homework. I took the class Winter 2011 and earned a B+ only becasue I didn't do some of my homeworks.
Dr. Hill is a great interesting proffesor! I never regreted going to class. Soc 35 (Racial and Ethnic Issues in the US) was especially moving. I feel lucky to have had a class this early in my college career that has impacted me so much! (and Im a Bio major) over all very recommended easy yet amazing class.
Dr. Hill is an amazing person. She is extremely passionate about the material. Very easy course.
Great professor. I learned so much in her class. You will think in a different way after you take this class. Don't be afraid to take her, she's great. Most of her test questions come from examples she gives in lecture, so you MUST attend lecture. Make sure you read and know the terminology in the book.
Dr. hill is awesome. Her lectures will blow your mind awY and get you thinking. She cares about the world we are living in. She is passionate and real and has evidence to make her points. Easy class just go to lectures and pay attention.
Dr. Hill's lectures were very informative she provided you with half of the information we needed that would be in the midterm. Basically if you pay attention in lecture and have an idea of what the assigned readings are about then you are good to go. But I would say Lecture is VERY important!!!
Amazing teacher, not your typical traditional teacher who bores you to death. She is passionate, and highly educated. This is one of those class where it can truly change your life; you will remember forever. This is not like your typical ordinary class where next quarter you forget everything. You WILL REMEMBER the class & her
One of the greatest professors! She changed my perspective about sociology. In her class I learned how to keep an open mind when it comes to social problems. Her Passion is seen greatly in her lectures. As long as you keep an open mind in her class you will do well.
very great teacher! she really knows how to teach and i wish professors had to sit in and take lessons on her style! she changed my life forever and i mean it! i was a second year Electrical Engineering major and her philosophy made me change to Ethnic Studies. Thanks Dr. Hill!!!
Dr. Hill has by far been the best professor I have taken at UCR! She cares about the students success. I valued how she spoke in terms of everyday real life. Sometimes words of wisdom and experience is better than what's written in textbooks.
I honestly don't know why Dr. Hill has such low ratings, maybe she has gotten better now as a professor? She is so sweet, caring, friendly, and inspirational. Her motive is to not trick students. She clearly states what is on the exams, and wants students to understand the material. I LOVED having her for stats and I hope I can take her again.
Dr. Hill makes the lectures so lively, and she is so sweet. It's easy to tell she genuinely cares about her students. The class goes at the pace of the students so don't worry about the difficulty. Although she was hilarious, she talks extremely fast and it can be hard to follow. But don't worry, as long as you have the book you don't have to go.
Hill is a good person but really not a good prof. We only had one take home essay midterm and one take home final that were massive % of our grade and she postponed their due dates multiple times; it was annoying as hell. Her class is also more of a preaching environment then an actual teaching one. It's just her passionately talking for 1 hr
I loved this professor and class. I found this class very interesting and fun, and Dr. Hill did a great job teaching us the material. She tells a lot of personal stories, but they are relevant to the course, so she's not just rambling. Discussion Attendance,Case Study & Presentation, Marriage and Family Project Paper, Midterm, and Final (20% each)
Dr. Hill is a very motivational lecturer. She keeps you interested and the material is very relevant. She shows lots of movies in class, and assigned lots of reading (about 5 books in the class). 1 Take home midterm and 1 take home final paper. Will randomly take attendance. Essay prompts are confusing and broad. Doesn't reply to emails very fast.
Professor Hill is one of the most inspirational teachers I've had. I loved going to her lectures because she was an engaging teacher. I was interested in taking this class to know more about relationships, families, and being single. I actually learned more than that and learned more about myself from taking this course. My TA Jessica was amazing!
Very knowledgeable about marriage, families, and singleness. Was very caring and gave students extra credit for showing consistency and effort. At times, however, the course was unorganized which was frustrating for those who do best with structure and organization. Overall, a very fun and interesting course with a caring professor.
I took Dr Hill for Soc 1 in the winter at Norco College. Shes a very sweet and lovely person. Her class was interesting, learned some things that a lot of professors dont teach you. No hw just 2 shorts papers and offered extra credit.. midterm and final exam werent too bad. She provides a study guide.. overall, a great experience.
Dr. Hills is a great and passionate professor. At first I was not sure about her because it was my first time taking her in one of my upper division courses but she made lectures very interesting. We had powerpoint presentations, pop quizzes, a take home midterm and a take home final. Both the exams were papers, but were very long but easy write.
Great Professor! Is very real and has funny lectures. It's obvious she cares about her students, she always is ready to slow down or go back a slide. Even though she posts all her lecture slides, I think going to lecture is much more important since she has way more to say than is on the slide and you can ask her questions. PLUS she goes over hw!!
Dr Hill was great! She really cares for her students and is willing to help them. Lectures were relatable and funny. Sometimes she gives extra credit for showing up. Tests were basically just the homework and she lets you use a formula sheet for the midterm and exams.
Hill is truly a nice lady, but this class felt more like a Race and Inequality class at times than a Modern Soc Theory class. Get ready to read! There are critical thinking papers assigned, two midterms, and a final.
She needs to realize that people have class after her lecture and she needs to stop interrupting and let groups finish their presentation. Also shes pretty bad at checking emails so asking her in person is always best.
I wish I would have taken Dr. Hill sooner, she's very passionate about Sociology and teaching. If you do all of the assigned readings and attend lecture then you'll be good! She does pop quizzes, but they are not difficult. She's very understanding so if you have a problem email her. She's definitely one of the best professors I have taken at UCR!
I had this professor in Fall 2018. 5 papers (2-3 pages per each), directions are VERY vague. Ask your T.A. for clarification on the directions of the paper. 2 exams and a final (non-commulative and multiple choice) but does provide a study guide for each exam. Note, exams may or may not be based off the study guide. Section is attendance
3 2-3page papers. Directions are vague. Ask your ta for clarification. 2 exams and a final. 50 mc and short answer questions. Provides a study guide but exams may or may not reflect the s.g. and short answer questions are not given. TA was Julisa, TOUGH GRADER but can look over your paper. As for Dr. Hill goes OFF TOPIC. Not sure if I recommend her
Dr. Hill was not the best teacher by any measure and I am upset that my expectations for the class did not live up to the actual class. Do yourself a favor and avoid this class. Rants too much in class so little to no attention to actual material. You've been warned.
This whole thing was during the coronavirus bull yet despite the fact that were in the middle of a pandemic Hill decided that for our second midterm we should straight up be recorded. Were required to sign this contract that says we have to consent to being recorded, have perfect wifi, etc. otherwise well lose points.
Dr Hill definitely knows what she's talking about and is knowledgeable, but the tangents are a little too much to follow. A lot of material is supposed to be covered (especially in an intro class) but we often run out of time during lecture because of rants or tangents. Students are often left to their own devices to study and fill in the gaps.
She's passionate about what she teaches but not a great professor. Rude at times, very unclear and unorganized. Minimal info given about the logistics of midterms which was upsetting. Some parts of the tests are very specific to lecture, but overall if you have common sense and general understanding about the world around you don't stress.
Although she seems to know what she is talking about, she frequently goes off topic which can lead to material not being covered in class. I took the class during the Coronavirus pandemic so there is some rough patches to be expected, but it seems that she put little to no effort in making the switch to online classes.
It's sad that the content is interesting, but is taught by a professor who does not care about her students. She only goes by her own agenda and ignores feedback and meaningful discussion from her students. For a professor who preaches all quarter to shut down meaningful conversations about current issues during class does not sit right with me.
I'm sure she's nice but she doesn't care about her students. One time, a student asked about the midterm and prof rudely interrupted her and said she'd only answer questions about midterm in office hours. Really disorganized, goes off topic, super vague, no rubric for "paper", suddenly decides to proctor test (COVID times), bad experience :(
She was really sweet at the beginning of the quarter, but towards the end of the quarter, she was yelling at students about asking about her vague midterm instructions, not allowing students to talk about the George Floyd protests, and refusing to give a compromise for her final. For a sociology professor, she loved to silence her students.
Goes off tangent a lot. Did not accommodate accordingly to the ongoing pandemic and instead placed stricter regulations during online proctoring even after students voiced their complaints. Teaches about giving a voice to minorities and speaking up but when students spoke up about our concerns, we were immediately shut down by her.
She is great at teaching, I enjoyed the lectures at first. But as the class went on, she has shown that she will not listen to/work with students when they need her the most. especially rn, we needed her to be a little more accommodating and she refused. We also weren't allowed to review her for school evals (she turned it off), so im here.
Reading and videos in lectures. Have to study slides/book on own before tests. Disorganized. Proctored midterm 2 after we were not for the 1st. Rude to students /TA over concerns. Not accomodating or caring. Chat off, no discussion allowed, no discussion section, really left on own. Study guides did not help. Unacceptable as a SOC prof!!!!
Attending lectures was torture. Doesn't teach the material, she shouts it at us, and always going off on tangents. I understand that the material she is covering is serious and I'm interested in it myself. But as someone w anxiety, there is no reason why she needs to YELL. Never seen a professor be so rude & dismissive to students
She did not take her students circumstances into consideration. Our voices were not heard when we expressed our concerns. All throughout lecture Professor Hill yelled at us and barely taught the material that was needed for midterms and the final.
Professor Hill seems very passionate about the subject of Sociology, but does not seem very skilled in practicing what she preaches. She remained deaf to the concerns and struggles of her students through one of the most unprecedented times in our academics. Going off on students for asking, and silencing chats during moments of concern, etc. 1/10
she is non caring about her studnets. i had time work conflict for the final which is on a Saturday and she essentially said, too bad. she took off her evals for the end of the quarter which is already an indicator that she knows she is bad. would not take again, a lot of the assignments were easy but very repetitive.
By far the most informative and passionate professor ive had at Ucr. She gives lots of readings but they all tie in to what she is talking about theyre not pointless. The people rating her badly just want easy As. She encourages you too expand your knowledge. If you are lazy i dont recommend this prof. but for those who want to learn take her.
Lots of the people in my class were very disrespectful and rude to the professorial the zoom chat, so that tells you a lot about the hateful reviews. But overall she was very educated on sociology and all the material given to us tied altogether in what she was teaching. A lot of work to do but its all easy just gotta use your brain.
Doctor hill was great i really learned so much from her than i did in my two years at UCR. She is not an easy A but every single assignment widened my knowledge on sociology cant say that about much professors. The readings and films that she provided werent just material to waste your time they actually connected to what she was teaching.
I took this class during the pandemic and lots of students on zoom were disrespectful in the chat considering that we are all trying to learn and it was the professors first time teaching online. She did amazing. she posted lectures if you were unable to make it. If you like to expand your knowledge take this professor. 3 tests & lots of homework
She was very rude towards her students. During this pandemic I understand that its hard we all are going through it but does not mean you should yell at students. Turned off her evals because she knew what she did was wrong. Wouldnt take her again.
I had Dr. Hill during the pandemic and I was disappointed. She was rude to a student that tried to ask a question during lecture. She yells at you during lectures and doesn't explore multiple views. She had us write a paper and provided almost no instruction. She was inconsiderate sometimes too. If you can find a different prof take their course.
She was okay, but refused some major issues students had during the pandemic! Wish she was more understanding..
Janet teaches the importance of voicing concerns, yet manages her class with the authoritarian style. Refer to below reviews. Furthermore, we pay tuition to learn, however, this quarter I feel as if my money went to paying Janet to read off slides and books providing no further substance or depth. Literal word for word monotone reading.
She's very rude to those who try to voice their concerns during class. Her "lectures", if you can call them that, are just her reading off slides and the textbook. Take a different professor if you can, it's not worth taking her section.
She turned off her Evals because she's afraid of students speaking up to her. Asking a question during lecture about an already vague midterm and being yelled at, as well as refusing to allow accommodations during a pandemic to students who need them, further confirms this. I learned more from the textbook than I ever did from lecture.
Took Social Inequalities. She's awesome! Went into this class with no expectation, hoping for a B. Got the first test back with an A. Was tougher on the exams than other assignments but I still did well. The book is kind of boring. Got a 91% overall! I recommend her :)
She is kind and intelligent professor.
Final & midterm were written & split into two sections: short & long answers with 3-6 questions. 1st section every question must be 1-2 pgs & 2nd 3-4 pgs each. I emailed Hill about the heavy course load & she shortened the final, but I still ended up writing 12 pages. This class was easier for me since I am a Soc major.
The exams were written, and they were long! She's an absolutely incredible woman and so understanding, given the pandemic circumstances. She made accommodations whenever she could, however, there was so much assigned reading. The lectures were interesting and inspirational, but the course load was too much.
I dropped this class after a week or two because Hill used the word r*pe repeatedly in her lectures. I emailed her asking if she could stop or use another word, and she said she would and the next lecture she used the word 4-5 more times. After I left, all I heard about her and this class was absolutely horrible. Try to avoid her at all costs.
I've taken Dr. Hill twice in both upper-div Sociology courses (online). Throughout her courses I have expanded my knowledge in important subjects that should be taught at all levels. The reading is expected for an upper-div course with 3 papers throughout the quarter NO TEST I think a weigh of the grading depends of the TA more so.
Love Dr. Hill. Was surprised 2 see overwhelmingly (-) responses here... Perhaps she and students had a rough qtr, and students had lots of complaints? All I can say is that she has been generous and forgiving throughout this qtr when students have communicated a need, & Im grateful to her. Cool prof with lot of insights and passion/energy!
1 of the best professors UCR has to offer. If UCR had a medal for most inspirational Professor I would nominate her. Dr. Hill pulls from the textbook to build her slides and supplements her course work with personal experiences of stories she has collected through life. Her class is very personal, and emotional but you gain perspective. Allhumdilla
I enjoyed Dr. Hill's lectures, she's one of the more inspirational Professors on Campus and found her class enjoyable to be in. She made me more interested in my class as you could see her passion for Sociology. A Professor that I will always think back to.
One of the most enjoyable classes I have ever had. She has a true passion for the course as she spoke from the bottom of her heart about the importance of understanding family violence and the devastating effects it can have on people's lives. There are only a few assignments that rely heavily on reading but they're manageable.
Prof. Hill is a passionate teacher no doubt, but sometimes the content of her lectures are drowned out by her passionate tangents. 3 papers total, can get by with reading the textbook alone. Made the exams too complex by asking for too much content with a short page limit. She is very sweet and kind, always understanding of student struggles.
I would not recommend. Her passion was too much. It often felt like she was ranting. I like getting extra help. There was no TA and she does not grade the papers herself. She was also often hard to reach out to.
DO NOT take this class is all I have to say!
Dr. Hill was amazing to listen to and taught straight-forwardly from the text, utilizing personal experience and conducting live interviews. I admire her because family violence is something that needs firm solutions, while appealing to the energy levels of today. She definitely sparked change and motivation - is a welcoming professor.
Dr. Hill is very sweet and caring, but get ready to read, read and read. Take this class with another professor if you have a busy life. You must read endlessly to pass quizzes and exams. Her lectures are super long too. Stay away!
She wasn't responsive during finals week, and I had a better time contacting the TA for clarification.
Dr. Hill is a passionate speaker and professor but that's the extent of her role as an educator. There were two required readings and a 3 hour long lecture. Just do all the readings. Lectures are long and tangential, filled with virtually no information that could be connected to the readings. Midterm and final exams are long and poorly structured.
Honestly she is a great lecturer, she makes u feel engaged and talks about serious topics. But her midterms, finals, and coursework asks tooo much from students. Thats saying a lot since i love reading. Be ready to read 1 chapters every week from different books ( we had 3). Just know this isn't an easy A class.
This class is reading focused and material-centric. Professor Hill is a jovial lecturer as well as former Berkeley grad who deeply regards subject matter covered in this class. There's never a dull twist when attending her course! There was an assigned group presentation and my group's topic was particularly sensitive, but altogether essential.
Dr.Hill can bevery unprofessional at times, especially when contacting her about clarification. She has a lot of reading(3 textbooks), many films, and long lectures that do not relate to the midterms or group projects(2 that you have to persent +assignments). She did not communicate with the TA almost at all. She will yell and get emotional in class.
