Pay attention or your doomed... do your home work or u will fail. shes fair but hard as hell
She's very thorough; always prepared for class; unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommended for all classes she teaches.
Shes a good professor, not unrealistic, but she'll make you learn your material. Kind of nice getting a female teacher in this field anyways!
Prepares well for class, can actually reply to questions with real information. Makes class time worth showing up for, that is, she doesn't make you do anything that's a waste of your time. Also easy on the eyes, so that's a plus too.
Very helpful, will correspond via email, posts all grades immediately. Gives lots of feedback, is very fair but tough, and knows her material well. Highly recommended!
Professor Kropff is a difficult teacher. If you don't take notes or talk with her in person about the curriculum, you are going to have a very hard time passing. She can come across as rude in e-mails, it is best to talk with her in person, but she does know her stuff!
I wish I had the professor that the rest of these comments had because she is nothing like that.1)she does not teach anything.2)If you dare to ask her a question during the lab expect to loose lab points 3)expect to fail, 50% of the peeps I talk to fail her classes. FYI I am not lazy cisco classes are expected to be tough and I know that!
Have also had for a multitude of other classes. She is knowledgeable about the material, but she is very difficult. I would say too difficult in most situations for what is acceptable. Inspiration to learn more and be excited about this technology field is not something that comes to mind when taking her classes.
She is a great professor when it comes to Teaching. However, her tests & quizzes are a bit over the top and sometimes rediculous compared to other professors at akron.
She's a powerpoint teacher. I think she knows the material pretty well, but she's not good at teaching it, not very helpful. Also, her tests are ridiculously difficult. It's not unusual for half of her class to fail out.
If you have Professor Kropff you better be a walking encyclopedia. She does not used CISCO issued tests, also you are not permitted to keep your test to study from. She reads from the PowerPoint verbatim, no personal experiences used to help clarify details.
Hardest professor ive ever had, extremely hard skills and written tests, at times it seems like she tries to trick you, teaches strictly from powerpoints, class has a less than 20% pass rate. If you don't put in 3 hours of studying per credit hr. per week you will fail. Better memorize the massive book
The hardest professor I have ever had. She teaches strictly from powerpoints. Tests are extremely hard. I learned more from reading the book than I did from her. Very boring teacher. She just goes through the motions when reading from powerpoints.
Hardest Professor EVER. Her tests & quizzes are over the top and are utterly ridiculous compared to other cisco professors. This is not a Master's level course. Unless you can memorize everything and draw diagrams for it, you will need to take this class multiple times to pass.
Will not give your tests back, so you have no way of telling what your weak points are. You better be a CCNP before taking the class, and even then she will still fail you. Just reads the PowerPointâ??s and gives non cisco tests that are way harder than any other Instructor.
I had her for the CIS - Internship class, if you do all of the required assignments it's an easy A.
The CCNP Advanced Routing course is difficult, but not impossible. If you read the textbook and study, it is possible to receive an A in the class.
The CCNP Multilayer Switching course can be difficult. However, if you take some time to read the textbook and study, passing this class shouldn’t be a problem.
Best professor in the CIS program. Will go above and beyond to help her students. Do the work she assigns, unlike most of the kids that complain, and you will receive a good grade. The material covered is tough, but it is easy to pass the class. You want her, do not be afraid to take her. I heard so many bad things but found out she is the best!!!
Will not provide help to transfer students. She told me several times "I am not going to teach you CCNA Stuff" So I am now forced to retake all of the CCNA courses. First time in my 90+ credits that I did not succeed. Now at risk of losing my financial aid and will probably not graduate. killed GPA failed me in CCNA Security too. Transfers Zero GPA
over the top tests.rude. unhelpful.AVOID HER IF YOU WANT TO GRADUATE!.very knowledgeable about the topics but expects you to know everything she knows for the test.college should be challenging but her classes make you want to drop out.expects too much.she needs to lighten up.dont know how she can fail so many and still have a job. Please quit janet
Horrible instructor who can not connect with students. She does a very basic lecture and does not go over important test information. Her tests are over the top and non Cisco. Something should say, "Hey your tests are too hard," when every test the class average is around a 66%. This is designed to make you quit in your senior year kill your GPA.
If you just want a good grade handed to you then this is not the professor you want. But if you want to actually learn the material and put the work in then you will love her as a instructor. I had her for Advanced Routing and felt confident in the end that i knew the material. I have scheduled her for my Multilayer Switching instructor.
Great Teacher, Highly Recommended.
3rd time with her, haven't failed one class, all Cs or C+s, 3.5 overall GPA. She is very helpful and very nice. Would have done better had I done more than just read book. If you are lazy you will fail. Adv Rt is overhyped as being super hard. Read the book, watch the nuggets, do the labs out of class once or twice, easy passing, possible B or A
She's hard. One of the hardest professors I've had, but she isn't there to fail you. Although she doesn't show it often, she actually wants you to pass. You have to start studying everyday at least 1 week before the tests (2-3 weeks before the final). Go to open lab. Work with groups. Overall very knowledgeable, very very nice, very very very hard.
If you study, read the textbook, and practice you should do fine. If you want to actually learn something take Prof. Kropff. Highly recommended.
By far the best professor in the CIS program. You want to take every class with her! There are so many "horror" stories about advanced routing and other CNNP level courses. Don't listen to it. I got an A+ in the class by taking time to read the book and participating in class. The students that failed in my class didn't put in enough effort.
Everyone i talked to said Janet was so unfair and hard. I passed this class first try by studying the chapters and ppt. Janet puts a LOT of work into making the tests relevant. This class is hard compared to other CIS classes but if you put in the effort you will pass. This was the most useful class i have taken . Amazing and intelligent prof.
Absolute nightmare for anyone who has trouble with testing. Read the book front to back and failed both tests. She basically made me want to quit my degree during the home stretch from her testing alone, not to mention the arrogant personality she's equipped with. Also great news, she's the only teacher avb for most of these classes now. Enjoy.
She is extremely tough, but I've learned more from her than any other prof! You can't expect to put in the same amount of effort as you have for other classes and get an A. Read the book, pay attention in class and take notes, be prepared for labs and STUDY A LOT. If you put in a lot of effort, she will bend over backwards to help you. GREAT prof!
Notoriously difficult, even needlessly so. Only gives half the class period for the final, so be prepared to speed through the configurations.
Kropff is kind of a tough teacher, but a very good one. You'll come out knowing your stuff better than taking classes with just about any other instructor. You just have to work hard and try. She's incredibly kind and knows the content. I found her to be what a professor should be to a tee. Don't be afraid to take her unless you don't try at all.
Professor Kropff treats this 300 level course as though it's the Holy Grail. If you have any other commitments in your life - expect not to pass. You need to be able to reguratate esoteric facts on open-ended subjective tests. Black and white personality - could care less if you pass or not. 80% or higher do not pass the first time around.
Terrible professor. She's knowledgeable, but must like to fail people. People say she just likes to make people not be lazy and weed those people out, but it ends up weeding out and failing 75% of the students. Hard for no reason. I studied for the final for 1-2 weeks(over 30-40 hours) I barely passed it. Avoid her.
Tough professor, but I recommend her if you want to really learn. If you pay attention in her class and study you will actually learn a lot. She expects you to understand and comprehend the material, not just regurgitate it. Also, you must know the CCNA material, which is understandable. If you can barely do CCNA routing, then CCNP isnt for you.
Janet Kropff is a very straightforward teacher. Pay attention to her powerpoints as that is what she uses as study guides(and what she bases all of her tests off of.) Her tests are very hard because you have to pay attention to the WHY behind things as well as the how. Also- 1hr 30 min is the STANDARD for all Cisco classes skills finals at UAKRON.
The most uninspiring teacher I've ever had. CCNP networking can, and should be very interesting and exciting. Extremely dry strictly power-point lectures, labs don't promote discussion. The class is tough but she is fair, put in the work necessary to learn the material and you can pass.
Before taking her, all I heard was how hard she was. While the class is far from easy, it not unreasonable. You can really tell how much effort she puts in to making the class educational and professional, and she just expects the same in return. She is extremely nice and more than willing to help if you have questions.
A+ is definitely not the average grade for her classes sorry. Avoid her at all costs. You can earn your degree swiftly or take her and claw and suffer like an animal trapped in a box.
unavailable
She won't trust you right off the bat. She will help you and clarify in her office hours. If you don't spend 14+ hours a week studying, you might as well drop. Students the couldn't pass were not able to dedicate adequate time for the course. If you want to be a poor network administrator, avoid her. You will learn to learn from books.
Professor Kropff is in my opinion the best instructor for CCNA classes. That is if you want to learn, and gain skills you will use in the real world. If you are simply looking to get by the easy way, she is not for you. If you care about your education, shes the right pick.
hardest teacher in this program by far. you have to love the subject material and understand thoroughly. classes with her will be the hardest you have ever taken in your life. she is helpful if you seek help, but will not give anything away easily. expect to live and die cisco. give up you job, sleep and social life if you want higher than a C...
Her material is harder than other professors but she's extremely clear about what needs to be learned and what will be graded. If you want to do well in the field you need to do well in her classes. Her tests are impossible if you don't study-but she gives study guides and if you pay attention her you'll learn so much more than any other professor.
Was Kropff a good teacher? No. Did I learn? Yes. I do not agree with her teaching method, but I was forced to learn the material. Scored in top 5 of each test, and top 3 of final. Please be wary of who you discuss routing protocols with; who you associate yourself with may lead to your downfall.
She is a class manager at best! I was responsible for everything I learned. She creates a very anxious environment which doesn't help with labs or test taking. You are treated like a little kid and have to go up and look over your test with her unlike any other teacher at the U of A. She is untrustworthy of students as well. Has a big ego.
In my experience, IT students don't like hard classes. They are use to getting easy grades. Adv. R. is a hard topic. No matter who teaches it you have to teach yourself. Do a little everyday. Make questions. Focus on the things you don't know. This is how I passed. You don't have to submit you whole life to it. This class made me a better learner.
Just to start I received a grade above C. She will not give great presentations. Her power points contain very little detail of what she actually tests on. READ THE FOOTNOTES of the books. If I could make that bold and underline I would have. I re-read the chapters at least 5 times over before her tests. Strict test environment.
Get ready to play the guessing game. She states, "oh just study my power points and you will do well on my exams". Next thing you know there is some random question from the text book that she never went over in class or in her power points. Vague tests and needlessly tricky. Don't listen to all these reviews, it could be her writing them!!
If you're dedicated to learn the content and you're committed to building the skills that she teaches in class, she will put in the equal amount of effort to help you pass. She's very fair and she is more than willing to work with you. Listen carefully to her lectures. The answer(s) to a question(s) on the test WILL come from her lectures.
If you devote a lot of time to learning the content of this class in detail- her tests aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be; they are appropriately challenging. But you have to commit a lot of time. People feel like she's against them but she just makes you push your limits, and you end up more than ready for the CCNP cert exams.
Ignore all that you hear about Professor Kropff, she is amazing at teaching this material. She's experienced in the field, so she teaches based on the certs! You have to do your part, take notes on the lectures, read the chapters more than once, understand the ppts, AND ask for help!! You can pass her classes and get 100% prepared for the certs!
Kropff is an outstanding professor. If she taught everything, she would be my only teacher. Those students hating on her probably failed because they didn't try. If you put effort in she helps you be successful beginning to end. She stresses to read from the book prior to lecture, and if you do this, you will pass. It feels good! 3 down with her
Kropff is by far the most difficult prof in the CIS major. She doesn't really teach u the material, she expects you to teach it to yourself. You never know what to expect on her tests. Her class is a textbook ex of brain dumping. I don't feel like I actually learned the material. Her "teaching" methods should be changed. Brain dump and u will pass.
As far as Lecture goes, Her Lecture are not that long but every first-day of week there will be test and her test are confusing. DO NOT REFER TO POWERPOINT for test; would benefit going to netacad and read. Lab everyday. which is only good things about this class compare to Pro. Haines. Even if you read it will be difficult to pass her class.
Professor Kropff definitely cares about her students, especially those that want more than to just pass. Read the book, listen closely to her lectures; her lectures are often hints on what's to be tested. Do the activities on Netacad too- the test questions often came from there. Just take college seriously and do your best. It's not unreasonable.
Don't buy into the reputation you hear. The whiners and babies are too scared to work. She is wonderful and will bend over backwards to help you if you care about learning and not just a grade. Read the material before class and come prepared. Look at the labs and slides and create notes based on that. I would take her again for any class.
If you are a hard working studious student, you will get alot from her class! You must put the time and effort into the material. Show up prepared!! (having read the chapter and the chapter labs) She places student in groups for labs based on their learning motivation. Develop good study habits and take notes! She preps you for Networing Job. 100%
Kropff takes material and makes it way harder than it needs to be. While her rigorous CIS classes can benefit students, she also made an internship way more rigorous than needed. Keep in mind that this class is pointless from the start as it is designed to help a student find an internship, but you have to have an internship to take the class.
By far the worst professor. She excepts you to learn from yourself. Lectures are OK. Will NEVER take her again. Steer clear if you can. Shes a good person but not a good professor.
By far the most difficult CIS professor here at Akron. With that said, I schedule her for every class I can because she really prepares you for the real world. It's a lot of work and you can't just float through the class, so she's not for everybody- but the way she pushes students has educated me better than any other professor here. Recommended!
Definitely the most difficult CIS professor. She takes the class too seriously; the real world is nothing like this class and way more laid back. If you want to pass, prepare to study about 10-15 hours per test. Take notes every time you read. Cisco's losing ground; Microsoft now has the upper hand. Maybe calculus would be of less difficulty?
She gave me the D+. Which is actually an F.
Avoid her if you can. She is a nice lady (kinda?), but her tests are difficult and contain a lot of memorization of tables and info that isn't all relevant and seems random. She taught this intro course as if it was grad level, and much of the material you end up having to teach yourself. One of the worst experiences ive had at UA.
Extremely hard tests with hard grading. A lot of homework given in short amounts of time. Expected to spend every second doing this work only and nothing else. Goodluck.
Her exams are harder than Cisco exam certifications. She is very knowledgeable, but her "custom" exams, test on items she finds interesting that deviate Cisco Learning network course work. Good Luck on trying to guess what she wants covered in her "custom" exams. 1st time I have seen students crying during exams because they failed
horrible
dont take her class. Just horrible 200% sure you are going to fail
I wish I could rate this professor with a 0 because that's only what she deserves. Tests are INSANE. She customizes all of her tests so good luck on finding out what to study. You are better off dropping out of school and trying to get certifications instead because sadly it's just that much easier.
By far the most difficult tests any networking major will have to take at UA. Lots of reading the book, slides, and other online material. She is more than happy to answer questions, but I found online resources much easier to understand when it came to new material. If you haven't yet, learn how to take good notes, and a lot of them.
Awful
Confusing poorly graded exams
Avoid at all costs...
She's as bad as you've heard. Do whatever you can to avoid her. If you have a photographic memory and know exactly how SHE wants you to answer her questions, you might stand a chance. But if you're normal and not a mind reader, forget it. Save yourself the SSRI prescription.
She has a reputation as being the hardest professor in CIS, but if you put in the effort you will pass the class. The rest of the department is way to easy so when you take a class with her it seems like it's impossible. If you read the book, take notes in class, look at the PowerPoint and participate in labs then you will pass the class.
Memorization without actual understanding. Professor Kropff designs her exams around memorization of specific, minute details. There is no check to make sure students understand the broader concepts in the course, only that they have read and memorized every little thing. This does nothing to prepare the students for the real world of networking.
There is an arrogance in Professor Kropff made immediately apparent in her syllabi. Asking around, I find that most students who have had her resent taking her courses. She's not only a tough grader, but a real stickler for grammatical and professional perfection. The irony being numerous mistakes in her own materials. If possible, do avoid.
Very demanding. The breadth and depth of knowledge expected is about the equivalent of 1-2 years of field experience working as a network/telecom engineer. The exams are toughly graded and there is no negotiating, no matter how ambiguous the question. Knowing the underlying concepts is a must, but the tests are straight memorization of 800 pages
Stressful class, being 2 days a week for 2 hours and 10 minutes. Its awful. She expects all of her students to have a photographic memory and does not give study guides on her exams, which is based off memorization some not covered in lecture. This class and professor gave me the realization to switch majors.
I have a love/hate relationship with this professor. She's very nice, she cares about teaching, labs help you understand practical uses for material learned, and all is fine with understanding content.. until the tests. Her's are the hardest tests I've taken in my life. If you ask enough questions and are good with memorization, her class is fine.
Alot of people hate because of the difficultly. This is a course that separates those who can and can't. Kropff is incredibly helpful and offers to help those who are struggling. If you don't pass, it's because you didn't try hard enough.
Final test class average was 57% do not take will not pass
She is a very nice person but her classes are extremely hard to pass. take your time and study hard for her classes. you will enjoy and learn a lot.
She doesn't seem interested in helping you pass. I went for help and instead of clarifying what she talked about in class, she would simply say "Maybe Cisco isn't for you" instead of helping me to succeed.
The bad reviews don't lie. Her classes are needlessly hard. Study like its your job or you will fail. The CIS degree is worth nearly nothing without experience. Get a program related internship early to land a great job by/after graduation or prepare to start at Helpdesk. She wants you to retake so she can get paid. LCCC has much more integrity.
With COVID going on Im giving her the benefit of the doubt. Ive been to her office hours a few times, and she seems super nice. Although, her tests are some of the most unnecessarily hard tests Ive ever taken. If this class turns into a full semester class it wouldve been fine. I do have to retake this though. Not a fan.
Most students told me that they had to take her course twice because its nearly impossible to pass the first time around; I got lucky enough to pass somehow. Expect lots of reading, labs, and other assignments on top of unnecessarily difficult tests/exams. She will definitely drill knowledge into you if you put in the effort however.
DO NOT GO TO UA FOR NETWORKING; god forsaken program. This degree is not worth the money nor the time you put in. You will have her multiple times. Her 300 and 400 classes is dam near impossible to pass even with 4-6 hr/pw unless, you have a photographic memory. Remember all commands, all details, all labs, all show commands, and their graphics.
Dont even bother trying. Literally a waste of money. Her class lecture is not helpful at all. Her tests are made up of open ended questions from the book. The problem is that theres no study guide. You have to read the book through and through to even have a chance at her exams. You have a better chance at cyber security course.
I had to retake this course because of how bad the class was taught by this prof. She doesn't clearly teach things to students and relies on the textbook/ Cisco's website. You have to do every single packet tracer even if they don't teach you anything valuable. If you fall behind, you're screwed. Retook the class with a different prof and got an A.
Amazing professor that's willing to stay after class or meet at some other time in order to help her student. Took both Networking Basics and Routing Basics with her and while they were not easy classes at all, she was always willing to help and even held extra review sessions for anyone who wanted/needed help. Very good feedback on tests. 11/10
Save yourself some money and take some online courses such as CBTnuggets. Explains things better and costs less. Networking degree is nearly worthless without certifications and the Networking course might as well been a waste of 4 years as they don't prepare you as well a these online courses.
This course was by far the easiest one I've indulged in at the UoA. If you're looking for an easy A, this is the route to go. I always recommend first year cyber and networking students to participate in one of her courses to boost their GPA.
Kropff is a great professor. She truly cares and puts effort into the classes she teaches. Her tests are not easy and she expects a lot from her students. I do wish the classes were not so Cisco heavy as the world does not run on Cisco alone.
Tests do not match the material taught in class. A lot of outside studying required and hoping you learn the topic before the exam comes around. This is suppose to be a class based on CCNP material but there is a lot that does not line up with the certification. I feel like this teacher hates her students and enjoys watching them struggle.
Per UA OAA, you have a 70% chance of failing each of the Route, Switch, & Tshoot courses only available to take with Janet and only offered 1x per year. This can easily change your 4 year degree to a 7+ year degree and cost you your financial aid pending on how many times Janet decides to fail you for fun.
Professor Kropff is a really great teacher if you want to actually learn the Cisco material. She gives you lots of study materials, but it is up to you to utilize them correctly. Kropff is a great teacher and her teaching style requires you to actually learn the material rather than memorize it.
Is actively ignorant towards the ADA act and re-writes cisco ccna curriculum into her words in order to make things easier for herself
I really wanted to like this professor. She does try her best to teach her students but also sets her students up for failure. Her curriculum is unnecessarily difficult and requires way more than 3 credit hours of work. Even the professors have mentioned in private that they don't understand why she essentially fails her students. It's sad.
While Professor Kropff was an extremely nice professor, her class was needlessly difficult. She would mention things that would be on the test, only for them to not be on the test. Lots of open ended questions she made no mention would be on the test, and with no study guides to try and prepare, preparing for her tests was near impossible.
Like everyone else is saying, her tests are ridiculously/needlessly difficult. You need to study every single concept in the power point slides to do well in the class. That being said, she is very helpful and offers good advice for any problems you may have. If you study like crazy, you will come out of the class better for it.
Kropff's classes are notoriously difficult however she is a very nice person. She expects a lot and is open about that. You'll learn a lot with her as your professor if you put forth the insane effort required to study how she expects you to - with open ended questions and broad concepts instead of minute details. Very accessible outside of class.
No late assignments, no make-up exams, no extra credit opportunities. LOTS of packet tracer.
Very nice person but gives her students loads of assignments. Expects students to know everything covered perfectly and makes labs more complicated than needed. Definitely a class you need to have no outside life to be able to ace confidently.
Professor Kropff is the best professor I encountered during my time at UA. Her classes are designed to make you learn, and as such they are difficult (but far from unfair). For students willing to put in the effort, there is no one better to teach the CCNA/CCNP path. Professor Kropff is kind and extraordinarily helpful.
She is probably one of the worst professors in the university. She doesnt know how to teach. No clear instructions. At least the other professors put some effort to make students learn. Feels like she is there just to pass her time.
The Linux Advanced class is difficult for the wrong reasons, with confusing and irrelevant exam questions. Janet seems unqualified. Instead of improving skills, this class feels frustrating and unproductive.
She is a tough professor, the exams are very tough but you will learn a lot. Not gonna sugarcoat it though, it's going to take some serious work to do well in the class. Especially the network focused classes, but to be honest, if u do good in the class then the certs like comptia net+ and ccna might be easier to comprehend.
class look easy at first beacause professor goes through the slides, expected to know the material line by line. no hands-on practice with the router or switch during class by professor, labs and exams require you to do and demonstrate technical understanding on paper. exams are significantly more challenging than what is covered in lectures.
Everything negative about her is true. She has a 30% pass rate. Her tests are unnecessarily hard. I lost points on a test despite being correct, just for missing two words she wanted. This is my second time taking her class, studying 20+ hours a week, and still getting screwed by her terrible questions. Avoid—take the class at a different college!!
This class seems easy at first, but the exams are extremely and needlessly difficult. I studied constantly and still couldn't pass because she expects an overwhelming amount of unnecessary detail. She is a nice person, but she openly says she designs her own exams and takes pride in it and she really shouldn't be proud of a 30% passing rate.
