Really good teacher. One of the FEW classes I actually looked forward to going to this semester. Very fair grader. If she teaches any other classes at SJSU I will probably sign up for them.
Passionate teacher, teaches in an interesting and enjoyable way. Has a great personality. Gets you thinking.
Great teacher with lots of energy, witty personality, and great humor. Lots of class discussions, which are interesting. Easy grader on tests and papers. I definitely recommend her.
Great energy, humorous, cares about the students learning, passionate about her subject. Get a good understanding of chapters one and two, and spend a lot of time on your papers, and you should be okay.
Giddings is a good professor that cares about her students. Class work is not hard and she is a fair grader. I found class to be entertaining and her point of interesting.
Class is intellectually shallow. Teacher enforces her dogmatic beliefs, creating a hostile learning environment where students who have objective views are not allowed to input into discussions. This is not a class to take if you wish to learn. Tests are easy. Book is dull, verbose, and bias towards utilitarianism. Critical thinkers should avoid.
Janet has a GREAT personality. Very passionate, sincere, and helpful. Cares a lot about her students. Made three-hour class fun. She might seem to argue with you because she takes the opposite position, but she argues to make you think further and seek for even stronger support of your view. Highly recommended.
Great teacher, who cares about what she is doing. She draws out critical thinking which some students don't like, but need to! I took the winter session - TONS of reading, but the 3 hr lectures went really quick and were very interesting. Prepare to do the work and you will do fine!
I really enjoyed Janet Giddings class. I think that the subject matter she presents is very interesting, while the workload is not overwhelming. During her winter class I was never bored and thought she brought to the table a lot of great controversial topics to hash out. I definately recommend this teacher to anyone at San Jose State.
Professor Giddings is the best professor I have had yet. She really cares about her students. There are 3 test, 2 papers and 1 presentation. If you don't like reading, then this class is not for you.
Great teacher. Likes to play devil's advocate to get you to think, which helps you develop a better argument. Uses book a lot to teach, but is very fun and interesting. Good sense of humor made this my most enjoyable class. Very strong minded and opinionated, but loves to hear what you have to say. Never dull, Highly recommended.
She made class very interesting and she's very cool. Do the readings, but the book is not hard to read. Some of the papers were a bit hard for me to write because it requires a lot of thinking, but she grades really easily. I'd recommend her for philosophy
She's very passionate and knowledgeable about philosophy. Her midterms can be hard because you have to remember specific things in every assigned readings. Overall, she is a great professor and a helpful mentor.
She is horrible! Supper opinionated but always has to be right. Has a superiority complex and makes repeated statements about how smart she is to the class. To me this means she either isn?t smart or she has really low self esteem, either way ? Bad Teacher! She preaches all kinds of excuses why teaching philosophy is so hard; stuff like Immanuel Ka
Bad- bad - bad - horrible - do not take, do not take, do not take, I am warning you do not take a class from this woman.. Do not take, bad, bad, bad teacher
Avoid this teacher. Do not take this very opinionated teacher. She repeatedly comments on herself. The material is biased to her view. You'll learn what she thinks and nothing else. Must read everything. Hard tests and useless class instruction.
She's a cool cat. She is very energetic and values our educational experience. Easy grading on the papers. I definately learned in the subject because of her. On the bad: She interupts a lot even after asking for your opinion. I'm glad that I never have to hear her 'blessings' again: Annoying as hell. Overall she is a good professor.I recommend her
Mrs. Giddings is a powerhouse. She will make you happy and she will make you sad. Yet, most importantly, she will make you think about yourself and the world that you live in. The class was tough. But, validated almost every suspicion and curiosity I?ve ever had about our world. Highly recommended.
Nothing short of amazing! This is one teacher I will ALWAYS remember. Very interesting, smart and respectful. People say she is very 'opinionated', well is Philosophy based on someones opinion and the way they thought???? She really gets people in the mix, every conversation was nothing short of interesting. Recommend her anyday
As others have said, she's opinionated and not that respectful of student with differing views. Doesn't really listen to her students...always cutting people off mid-sentence. But she knows the material well, grades fairly, and exams are easy.
If you aren't the type of student who likes to share their opinions or likes being grilled, don't take this teacher. I absolutely loved her and the fact that she was so opinionated. She made me think a lot about the meaning of things instead of taking everything at face value. One of the few teachers who left such a great impact on me.
Class time is used to bash CEOs, borrowers, lenders, etc. for the credit crisis. Cuts people off often and tries but fails to sound smarter than anyone else. Lectures are useless for exams and are a waste of time. She takes it personally if you are late or absent or surfing the net. I got an A- but learned NOTHING about ethics in this class.
She is so nice and the class is extremely easy
If you are an unethical, lazy "just want to get by sort of person" you'll hate this class. Otherwise, if you like to think and be challenged, you'll love her calss. She's funny, challenging and interesting. she gives the best lectures. The tests are multiple choice and very difficult. You must read the material and prepare the study guides she gives
This is one of my favorite teachers here so far, all though she lectures alot she is very passionate about the subject and constantly throws in little jokes to make the class more exciting. If you arn't willing to participate in discussions in class then don't take her, she requires student participation, but it makes the class fun!! LOVE HER!!
THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! LOVE HER SEXY SHORT HAIR!!! TAKE THIS CLASS OR YOU WILL BE BUMMED FOR THE REST OF UR LIFE!!!
She is a good teacher. An absolute type of person :) attending class is mandatory, she will get you to think about the moral issues that we discuss in class. i like the way she tried to get people to be invovled in the class.
Professor Giddings is an excellent instructor. She is smart, involved, and clearly has a passion for the subject. She also challenges her students, and shows interest in their success. She does however, come off as a SF elitist - cosistently reminding you of your inferiority for attending a public University. But, no one is perfect.
Prof. Giddings is a great Professor. I took her for Philosphy and she does tell a lot of stories but they all make sense to the course. She makes Phil 186 a very interesting class, not boring at all. Show up to all her classes. You must read your book in order to stay ahead in class. No way around the textbook.
Wonderful professor who is passionate, knowledgeable, and interesting. You will need to read the book (all of it) in order to do well on the tests because tests are based only on the book; tests are multiple choice (most of the time). Lectures may not be needed to do well, but they are highly interesting and gets you to think critically.
Prof Giddings is amazing. The class is interesting and thought provoking. READING THE BOOK IS A MUST! It's not difficult but the tests are based completely on the book. Actual in class time are mostly discussion based on the reading but not really actual teaching... definitely worth going. TAKE HER! You won't regret it.
The class is very interesting and entertaining but she can come across as a very rude person. She will interrupt and cut you off many times. She likes to give "smart" answers or comments to some students. I'd say take the class but beware.
The best professor and class I had my freshman year. She is really easy going. Most of the class time is just spent on listening her to talk about ethical issues we hear on the news or see in our everyday lives. Some days its dull, but she brings up very interesting and funny topics. TAKE HER!
She is very opinionated, her class is very boring and hard to go to. It wasn't totally horrible but wasn't great either. The first test was extremely hard which affected my grade for the whole semester because everything is only worth ten points or so.
Take her! I enjoyed her class for the most part. She's nice and keeps the class interesting and straight-forward. The 3 tests can be tricky, but mostly easy since she tells you exactly what to study. It's either mc and t/f or short answer. There's 1 short paper, but you get to pick your own topic. You must have the book to keep up and study!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! This was the best choice I ever made in a class.First class I ever enjoyed going to. The class is basically open discussion, she cares about everyone's opinion. She wants you to have a voice. She talks about topics that are interesting and relevant. Most brilliant teacher, hilarious, caring, and super approachable.
really easy and interesting to go to class..take her if possible...also took her for 186 learned pretty much same thing as 61
This teacher is very rude and opinionated. She thinks philosophy runs the world and all should listen. She has made this student not like philosophy.
I'm still bitter about this class because even though I got As on EVERY single test, I ended up with a B. That aside, Ms. Giddings was a great teacher. Kept the class laughing at her sarcastic jokes which made a 9am class bearable.Pretty hard grader on the papers but tests are a breeze. You get to check answers with classmates b4 turning in tests.
She is MEAN and RUDE. She makes you participate & when you ask her a question, she tells you to find your own answer yourself using google. Super annoying & she is not helpful at all. She tries to sound like she's better than everyone, too into herself.
I love Giddings! She is funny, down to earth, and actually cares about her students! She goes over practically EVERYTHING on the tests, very helpful and a lenient grader on our 2 papers.I highly recommend this prof, she is great! If i could take her again i would in a heartbeat! (:
Professor giddings is nice, a little strict, but is worth taking the class. I learned a lot of things that are relevant to my other classes. She spends a lot of time talking about interesting things. She does not accept late work! But if you have a valid excuse you can turn it in.There's no final either. Just a presentation. Score!!
AMAZING teacher. she's so fun and actually interesting. You use the textbook a lot, i took her over winter and she basically gives you the answers to the tests and gives everyone A's on the first paper. TAKE HER!
Giddings is a great person. However there really is no lecture;she expectes every1 2 read the ch's asigned be4 class,so discussions r based on ur knowledge 4rm reading. She takes attendance. 2 papers;1=she picks topic 2=you pick from topics she gives.2 midterms 1=MC 2=short answer. Very hard grader.U will learn alot even if ur grade desn't show it.
Professor Giddings is one of the best professors I have had through out my college career. She is unique and cares about her students. Her exams were based on the book & she provides study guides. Easy A if you read and study what she tells you. Also go to class everyday, try to patricipate and there is extra brownie points if she knows your name :)
This is no easy A class. That said, Janet Giddings' class was one of the most rewarding I've ever taken. She's funny and engaging and pushes all of her students to become better critical thinkers. I learned so much from her. Attendance is a must and the class can get intense sometimes, but it's worth it. Her tests are moderately difficult.
She was a great professor and loves to teach ethics. You will fully understand & apply the theories she teaches. Reading the book is a must, attendance is mandatory and participation is great. She does not lecture from the book or slides, but does get students to think ethically; easy A if you read & study. She makes this class very interesting.
Favorite class! The class is always so thought-provoking and mind opening. She made me rethink about my ethics. Be sure to attend class and particiate! Reading the txtbook is a must. Her exams are straight forward and she mostly grades on the content on the essay. I highly recommend her class!! She's rly funny and open about her stories.
My favorite class. Attendance and book are MANDATORY. One test, two papers, and a few presentations. Participation is a big part of the class, and she will call on you. Even though I hate speaking, I didn't mind. This class really makes you think and you'll learn a lot. She's hilarious with her stories and kind to her students, overall great class.
LOVE HER! she doesn't want any student to fail and she will help anyone who seeks help. If the whole class is struggling she will make adjustments. She is pretty easy but you don't want to upset her, she's pretty feisty. Manners matter and so does attendance with her. Tests and homework are easy if you read the material.
Teacher is very helpful. Attend the lectures and read the book. You work as a group to work on cases and there are a few paper assignments. There are 2 exams and the final was a group presentation on a community project. Overall good course, make sure to attend the lectures as she gives participation points.
The only class i looked forward to each week. She makes you think about what truly is right or wrong. Your grade is based off 2 exams and 2 papers. Read the book always! come to class ready. You automatically get points for coming and participating. At end of semester you will be in a group presentation as a final. Easy if you read and take notes
I really enjoyed this class; it truly made me think about the morality in my daily decisions. There are 2 big essays, (strict on MLA formatting), 2 tests (open note, super easy), and 1 group presentation at the end. I got an A, this class was not that hard at all. I definitely recommend!
Amazing professor. I actually enjoyed writing my second paper. I could have gotten a better grade if I had shown up to class more. Interesting discussions in every class that really make you think critically. Would definitely take her again if I could.
Overall this professor seems passionate about the course but when she asks for opinions in the class and yours is not what she likes she will shut you down. She is extremely rude and will take attendance every day.
She can come off really strong but she is passionate about her job. She explains everything in detail and the in-class discussions help. She takes attendance and is old school in her beliefs. She sometimes related to students. Her 2 paper prompts were pretty easy. She pulls teeth for your opinion and will debate with you on it in class.
Professor Giddings is an amazing woman. Don't get on her bad side and she will love you to death. But once you are on her good side, she is right as rain. She engages students, plays the devil's advocate well, and has no heinous expectations of how students should appropriate their skills in class. Clear cut and I hope to take another class w her.
Professor Gidding's is a WONDERFUL lady. I enjoyed her lectures very much. She seems like a hard teacher at the beginning but then you get used to her style. You really have to read for her class if not you will get behind. Her quizzes are all based on the readings. I enjoyed her straight forward personality. Definitely would take her again.
I took her during the winter session and enjoyed her class. She makes you work and is a stickler about being late but overall it was a good course. Basically do the work, participate and show up on time and she will like you. Like other students say, do what you can to not get on her bad side.
OMG, such a great professor. This class changed my outlook on life and was so fun. One of the only classes that lets you make friends with your peers. The textbook is necessary, there is 2 papers, a multiple choice midterm, a written midterm, a case group presentation, and a take home written final. Would recommend this class to everyone!
Very sweet teacher and passionate about teaching. first midterm was take home which was an easy A. really pushes students to consider grad school. Easy class as long as you put a little effort in and show up every day you will at least receive a B.
Loved her PHIL 61 class. Teaches well and is very clear. Lots of class discussion and puts what you learn into real life perspective which I appreciate. A little old fashion and expects you to be polite and have a lot of etiquette. Other than that, I think she grades easy, and theres not much work. Would take again. Makes me want to change majors.
First midterm is online but you can not use Google or anything else because software is blocked. Second midterm is in class 40 short questions. 1 final, and 1 paper which you have to prepare very well. Otherwise you can get bad grade.
Read and study the textbook like it's the Bible. Seriously. Her tests ask questions that you will only know if you read the book 5x. Don't be late/absent, grade based on "participation". You get a higher grade if you answer her questions about chapters. Pretty confusing directions overall ALSO, really anal about you using phone/laptop in class.
Decent professor, but far from the best. Lack of effort put into her Area E class is noticeable and hopefully it's better for the upper-div classes she teaches. About 3 readings the entire semester and workload is reasonable. Attendance is 40% of grade, mandatory. Her attitude during class discussion appeals to some, but can be unnerving to others.
1st test is online, 2nd is short answers, group presentation, online final. Having the book is mandatory because there are readings each meeting. Read the chapters or you will not pass. She doesn't have any visuals. She just talks. Participation is a crucial part of grading so attendance is required. Not approachable or helpful.
Great course to take for winter session. Read and participate. 1 paper.
Professor Giddings is a great ethics professor that will change the way you think forever. Be ready to be challenged, and don't be afraid to speak up your own thoughts.
Professor Giddings actually cares about teaching and her students. She is very opinionated, but if you can let that go she really teaches a lot of life lessons that you can use in your college career/future.
Yikes you do not want to get on this lady's bad side! Be an adult and do your homework and reading, participate in class, throw her a compliment and you'll do just fine!
She seems intimidating at first, but she really cares about her students. Attendance isn't mandatory but really helps, as does reading. Don't be afraid to participate in class. Lots of group work, a couple of papers / projects, a few exams, but no HW other than reading. Doesn't really lecture but guides discussions.
Although sometimes can seem intimidating, prof. Giddings is nice and funny! I would recommend this Professor. Class consisted of many short, easy to write papers, LOTS OF READING!! Midterm and research paper. Some topics are interesting and some are boring. There is discussions everyday on everyone's opinions and interpretations of the reading.
VERY GOOD PROFESSOR! I would take any class with her again--you must participate and you must show up to class on time or it will be reflected in your grade. She says what she means and she means what she says. Great personality--makes the material really come to life, bus 186 was a really fun class. Lots of reading though.
Overall a good and easy teacher, the first half of the class is super intense so just stay on top of the reading each night before class and you'll do well. The second half is easier because you work on different assignments. She is a big liberal and will talk about her political views all semester (Trump fans beware). She's huge on participation.
So Rude when you emailed her and asked questions. Not approachable. Not clear on grading criteria. Don't take her class, period.
She is a pretty scary little lady! She seems really unapproachable but she is actually pretty nice! Her class is fairly easy, but however, there is a lot of reading to be done in that class
She never responds your email in time and it normally takes one week to get a response!! She has a poor explanation for the assignments and it is easy to get confused about her instructions. Don't take her online class!!
Professor Giddings is an inspiring woman and taught me lessons applicable to life. I looked forward to coming to this class everyday, and always left with something to think about. She is very understanding, kind, and grades leniently. She expects you to come to every class, which was not much to ask for. This class will definitely open your eyes.
She was intimidating at first but throughout the semester she gets easier. Her online exams were really easy and open book. Have to attend to every class and dont be late or she will call you out. I accidentally missed my online final and she was nice enough to let me retake it. Easy class if you participate!
Not very helpful when asking for help. I have reached out to her many times for explanation and it almost seemed like she hesitated to help.
Easy C. Difficult A or B. Grading: A-: 92% B-: 82% C-: 64% Participation is 20% of your grade, but it's really attendance that you're graded on. She'll tell you what areas to study for the 3 tests (20% each) so it's hard to do poorly on those. There is one research/argument paper that is 20% of your grade, and she's very tough on this piece.
Prof Giddings is an amazing professor! I look forward to going to class everyday and I learn something new every class. She really relates the class to the real world and the class itself is very eyeopening. She seems a little intimidating at first, but is actually very nice and caring. Just expects you to be in class and on time. Expects respect
Professor Giddings was hands down one of my favorite professors at SJSU so far. Complete your readings, come to class, and participate and this class will be an easy A. She is very passionate about what she teaches and makes class fun. Grades are based off 2 tests (online), one research paper (heavily graded), participation, and a final (online)
In the first few weeks you'll go over definitions in the textbook, but eventually that fades. Class did not have much substance but attendance is mandatory if you want easy participation points. You have to write a very short essay, but she seems to only care about the formatting of your sources. I got an A on it without doing much at all.
She is straightforward and old school. Use of technology in her classroom is forbidden and you will get kicked out for the day if she catches you checking your phone or laptop. She is fair and clear with her expectations, but is not at all accommodating toward student schedule conflicts whether it be work or family emergencies.
Just take her--Especially during Winter Session. You won't regret it. She has such a real personality and makes hilarious comments. Go to class and read the book, you'll get an A. She's a very inspirational woman. I really enjoyed her class for winter and am very thankful that it flew by like a breeze.
One of my favorite professors. Her lectures are comprehensive, and she talks about a lot of relevant topics. Make sure you catch up with the readings. If you do, tests won't seem hard. Recommend seeing her during office hours if you need help. Overall, she's funny, and that makes the class less boring.
Professor Giddings is one of the best choices to go for if planning to take Philosophy 186! The class was interesting despite the fact that it was an online class. There is one research paper, discussions and weekly quizzes. Final was a discussion. Overall, she is great professor who is available to answer any questions you might have.
I usually dot not type comments or reviews on professor, but this one needs one. If you are sitting there deciding what classes to take next semester, skip this one. The reason is because her communication is non existent. Countless of emails ignored from myself and other students. She does not respond at all.
Professor Giddings isn't a bad professor, but a little old fashioned. No technology in her classes at all. The way she explains the assignments and papers makes it seem like she'd be a tough grader, but it's surprisingly easy to get a high grade on her papers and tests. Lots of group work and lost of reading. But 91% on her class is still a B+.
Professor Giddings is an ok teacher. She is someone who wants her students to succeed. She doesn't like computers or phones in the classroom. She is funny but bias on certain topics.
If you are taking this class online be prepared to have a lot of rude/passive aggressive responses to your answers. This class takes no brain work but the teacher calls out students by name in a group email if she doesnt agree with what they said. Immature and childish teacher
Very good professor and very caring about her students! Appreciates your thoughts on discussions but will help you understand how to apply ethics and philosophy. 2 midterms, a final, a 5 page essay plus a group case at the end of the semester! Super easy, highly recommend taking her for a class! If you do all the work properly, you will get an A.
Professor Giddings makes her lectures very enjoyable and interesting. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Participation is graded heavily and worth 20 points. In addition, there are 2 in class tests, 3 essays, 1 presentation, and 1 final. Put in the effort and follow the guidelines and you will easily get an A.
if she is your only prof option to take 186 online, don't take it. the class is very structured which is the only plus, but assignments have 0 detail for what is required. her emails are hostile and passive aggressive, and she contributes none of her own material to the class. it is all textbook readings and youtube videos. maybe its just covid.
Prof Giddings provides no actual lectures of her own for the course. You can expect a discussion post and an argument post every week (which you are not allowed your opinion to formulate your argument). Warning: any argument that does not agree with her perspective will likely fail, and she is not afraid to use double standards to defend her stance
Class consists of weekly discussions, midterm, final, 2 essays, & research paper. Buy the textbook; her exams ask for info that's only in the textbook. She is slow at replying to emails & uses lockdown browser (no webcam). Be descriptive with discussions & essays; she wants detail with sources in your argument. Make a solid effort & you'll pass.
A very caring professor. The class was super easy and straightforward. As long as you try, its an easy A.
This class was easy and organized for me.
This course was my first ever summer class, and I anticipated a little bit of a struggle as they move faster. I was getting a little overwhelmed with the course load, and I was very communicative with Pr. Giddings and asked for help. She ignored several of my emails and was quite rude and condescending in her responses, when I got any.
I honestly think that professor Giddings is really sweet and caring. Her work is pretty straightforward and consists of weekly discussions and readings (but you don't have to do the reading in order to understand the work) a midterm (which was really easy) a group project, and a final paper. I would honestly take her again if I had the chance.
Wow, This professor is crazy rude. Literally not real. I utterly don't understand why she is so condescending, it creates a environment where I rather not talk to her even if I needed her input. Would not recommend her. She upsets me and in my opinion I'm rather patient.
She is very rude like the other reviews have said. The tone that she types with is condescending and makes you hate her and the class. Also will not accept your discussions if you don't sound like a scholar with the material. The textbook is also hard to understand because it is so heavy on philosophical terms.
For an online philosophy class, this was really lightweight and easygoing! 1 sometimes 2 assignments due every Saturday 10pm. Tests are no webcam open notes. This professor is super kindhearted and cares for her students. Easy A!
If you are someone who likes to voice your opinion or write about controversial topics do not take her. She isn't really a tough grader but I felt like when I wrote about something she didn't like it wasn't graded fairly. Extremely rude and vague in her feedback as well.
She is a little rude and seems like she does not have a lot of empathy. I made a mistake on a discussion post where i did post but the font color messed it up, which made my post look blank when it was actually not. I emailed her and she responded to me vaguely and still gave me a zero. Weekly discussion, 1 group project, and 1 final.
She seems nice enough. There are a discussions maybe once a week, 1post 1comment. 2 papers, 1 group project, 1 question final. Quite a bit of reading. One negative thing would be a little bit lack luster in explain things, but if u ask her, she'll explain pretty well. I would take this class if u had some basic knowledge of philosophy beforehand.
very very very hard grader good luck !
Lots of reading! Around 2-3 discussions every week. Mind you she grades these discussions fairly harshly. She will give you a 0 if it doesn't align with what she expects you to write. She is also very rude and condescending btw I have never felt so disrespected as a student and all I asked was for help ?
Discussions and readings per week. One group project. The tests are on the reading/ lectures. Tough grader in general you either get a complete or a 0 on discussions.
Professor Giddings' class can be hit or miss. While the workload is manageable, her teaching style and communication skills can be lacking. However, using resources like Unstuck ai and staying engaged in class helps a lot.
Her class was super easy for it being an online class. It was pretty much just a discussion post a week, with an occasional assignment on the side. She is definitely strict about grading. She gave me a D on a paper, but after meeting with her she changed it to an A, so dont be scared to ask about a grade you got.
The professor is a very hard grader. Feedback is also very condescending making it come off very rude. Wants everything perfectly aligned.
she was incredibly rude. every time we contacted she was unbelievably condescending. i do not recommend taking her at all, she honestly should not have her job. my experience in this class was absolutely insane.
Only take this class as a last resort. It's extremely demanding - every detail must be perfect. Weekly discussions require thorough book/research prep. Strict formatting rules - Strict rules -miss one and you'll get a 0. Group projects exceed 2000 words. That said, the professor is clear and fair. If you follow instructions exactly, you'll survive.
insanely condescending
Very passive aggressive & condescending. This is only if you're not her favorite class. Me and many others in the class kept having to resubmit our papers until she liked it. Everytime I submitted, it felt like a new issue would arise?
