A fun lab professor. She is loud and likes to make jokes, even if no one laughs. She is passionate about nutrition and wants us to know the facts. It is more interesting than lecture but even in this lab you don't do many activities... it's just another class period where you take notes. Takes attendance every week but very easy to do well in.
GREAT LAB PROFESSOR! Absolutely loved her! She is so passionate about nutrition, extremely helpful, and clear on what she expects of you. She takes attendance every week, so going is a must. Labs were my favorite part of this class. Makes this class very interesting! A must-have professor!
Great Lab professor. She makes lab interesting and she is a great speaker/teacher. She is a very friendly and you can tell she knows what she is talking about!
Macon is super fun and interesting. She makes the lab enjoyable and it's super easy. She does a lot to get everyone involved and it is a really fun class!
Macon makes the class fun and interesting! She works to get everyone involved and it's a very enjoyable lab.
Interesting class, but she is very picky. Avoid.
Really strict teacher. Moves really fast through slides, but you can watch a recording of your lab online. Pay attention and take good notes. The lab questions are harder than the lecture ones and she's not really one to negotiate grades.
She sets clear expectations and expects you to follow them. Very picky in her grading and extremely specific quiz questions. Overall a good and interesting class.
She is a good teacher and really likes teaching nutrition. Always has hands on activities in lab. You do want to come to class, takes attendance its like 45 points. Make sure you don't forget about studying the lab part when it comes to the quizzes and testes because their underestimated. She also puts together study guides for the test.
She was very straight forward with what she was asking for, if you go to class and do the assignments as she say you'll get a B. Put in some extra effort to study and see her in office to get an A
You have to memorize every single thing she ever says in lab or you will fail. Good luck. YOU DONT NEED THE TEXTBOOK only the access code.
I have Macon for lab and she talks WAY too much. I think she just likes to hear herself talk and it gets annoying. Assignments you turn in are easy BUT her grading is ridiculously nit-picky and will take off a point for anything. Every little thing she says in lab you basically need to know for the exam, even if it's not on a powerpoint. Not a fan.
Prof Macon teaches the lab portion of HERS205, and I would recommend her. Labs are kind of boring but easy, and she uses gap notes. There are 3 big assignments that take time but are easy overall. Doing well on these are a simple way to gain back points lost on exams! Turn them in on time. She does not accept any late work!
I really looked forward to Nutrition lab every week, Professor Macon is super passionate about what she teaches and is easy to listen too. Quiz questions were specific but as long as you paid attention in class youre fine. Id definitely take her again!
She is an amazing professor. I had her for nutrition and was able to understand the class really well. She is great at explaining new concepts.(:
Professor Macon hardly ever finishes her lectures, her labs are a joke, and the littlest details are major questions on the exams. She uses Tophat, which doesn't work half the time, and gives you no way to try and regain the points you were not able to receive and offers no help in trying to resolve the issues on the app she forces us to use.
Professor Macon is REALLY passionate about nutrition. She's good at what she does and it an expert. Id say she is thorough and the tests are really hard. However, there are points given a lot of ways besides tests so that saves your grade.
Do not take this course
EVERYTHING IS TIMED. Quizzes, Exams, TopHat, anything you can think of, it's timed, and you don't get a lot of time to do your work. Goes through lectures fast, goes into INSANE detail! You need to write down every single thing she says, or you will not pass. Very little extra credit, but easy module points. I would not take this class again..
I had Janet for a lab teacher and she was really fun and understanding. I missed and exam that was online and she re-opened it for me to take it. Lab was only one day a week so I didn't see her very often, but from what I heard she is a very hard teacher for Nutrition, and I had her for personal and community health lab. Overall, ver nice teache.
Macon was alright. Shes very quirky during lecture but goes through slides so fast sometimes that you don't even understand what she's talking about. I had a bad personal encounter with her but overall the class isn't awful as long as you study. Exams are fairly difficult but you get points from modules and other assignments to bring your grade up
Janet is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. She is very understanding if you are struggling with something in class, and is approachable. The tests are kind of difficult, but if you study for them, you should be okay. She does go through some slides fast during lab, so you do have to hurry to write everything. I would recommend her.
Janet was overall okay. There was a lot of content squeezed into the little time we had. You are tested on a lot of little details so make sure to pay attention to lecture and rewatch the videos. You need to study/do your work outside of this class almost everyday in order to get a good grade in the class.
Her lectures are easy to follow because she gives gap notes. The class is fairly easy but her tests are terrible. She puts things shes never discussed before. She was a nutritionist and makes her exams like a professional would. Not an entry level nutrition class. She is also EXTREMELY rude. If you try to email her, dont expect a nice reply.
She is a wonderful professor, just study a lot for the exams.
all im going to say is if you can take another class/prof, take it. If not good luck. Shes mean and does not care on whether you fail or pass. GOOD LUCK BUDS
if option do not take her, she is terrible at giving advice and feedback. her lectures were so confusing and hard to follow and there was so much specific information thrown at you. It was majorly memorization
Dr. Macon expects a lot of her students and isn't the best a catering to her students. There is simply too much material that is put into too short of a time period. Also she gives online quizzes every week that can be extremely difficult because of multiple select options. I would take a different professor or an online class instead.
This class is an absolute joke. Prof Macon is so unorganized and does not have a "set in stone" grading system. Everything she does is online, and all of it is extremely unreliable. Take another professor if you can, or take another class that fulfills this requirement online.
Oh, Janet. What a ride this semester has been. I decided to give this professor the benefit of the doubt despite the rough reviews, and let me say, bad move. HERS205 is extremely lecture heavy, and she expects you to remember every single thing she says during class. The tests are extremely difficult, so get ready to spend a lot of time studying.
Everything you do in lecture and lab is pretty easy, and if you complete your homework you should finish this course with a solid B. The tests and quizzes can be very difficult; Janet asks very specific questions so it can be really hard to study. Even when you study all the learning objectives she gives, it's unlikely you'll get an A on the exam.
I learned a lot from the class, however she is not understanding or willing to work with you if you miss a quiz because of being sick unless you have medical papers. The biggest thing to know is that her exams and quizzes are super hard. You have to know the material front and back.
She is a wonderful professor, and is intelligent. The material is easy, you just have to put a lot of time into studying. Just put the work into the class, and you will be fine. I would take a class with her again because I learned so much.
Prof Macon is a very nice person but her tests are impossible. Many of the questions are multiple select so you need to know the material front and back. She records her lectures which is nice but you need to watch each one at least twice and attend lecture to get all the material she will test you on.
Exams are multiple choice with 5+ options and they are select all of the above. Lectures usually go over the allotted time and you end up learning the material on your own. Attendance is not mandatory however there are in lecture random quizzes you can only access from within the room. Lab attendance required. DO NOT TAKE WITH MACON.
Lectures are very hard to follow, Janet speeds through things to try and fit everything into class time. Not enough time for lab activities, only can complete if you stay after class. She isnt a good listener, and this is not a good intro course. Will need to listen to lectures constantly online in order to try and get all the information.
Prof. Macon is a really good person and her lectures are clear but her exams were the hardest ones I've taken in my whole life. She doesn't provide extra credit if you ask, you can't retake most things. You have to study insanely hard and in every possible way to get a decent grade. I would not recommend this class with her.
The class is much harder than it needs to be. The exams are all online, and all the questions are multiple choice. This is what will ruin your score. Janet knows what she's talking about, but she needs to understand that us students are not at her level. She speaks so fast in lecture too. She does give extra credit tho, not that it will help much.
I have learned so much from this class. Janet is wonderful! I think that people's issue is that they don't know how to study for this course.
Definitely not an intro level course. She sped through lectures and included things on the tests that are extremely specific and almost impossible to study for. You can study for hours and still only manage an OK grade on her exams. Would recommend taking a different course that gives them same credits as this one if you have the chance
UGH OMG JANET, is something I found myself screaming at the computer after every sunday quiz. She speeds through lectures and doesnt give you time to understand the material. Also, if you have health problems but arent in the hospital for it, you can forget turning in things late. Dont take this course if you dont have to.
She is amazing. Not a fan of quizzes or test though. This class is worth a lot of points.
Janet's class required a lot of work and the tests are very specific and require more than good notes on her lectures. There are a lot of easy points in the class and a B or above is very manageable. The labs aren't like other labs and help a lot. Weekly quizzes are tough but with good notes from lectures and the book aren't too bad.
If you want to take a class where you're belittled, have a teacher that is not understanding or reasonable, and want to have a ton of busy work then take a class with professor Macon. Her tests are very hard, but as long as you show up to class and lab you'll at least get a B. She set her classes up so getting an A is nearly impossible.
Honestly you can be a good person but that doesn't mean that you're a good prof. She is so not understanding and made a subject that people should like, horrible. Many of us were Nursing majors and we can all agree that her Nutrition course was harder than a second year Anatomy class.. You can pull out a B in the class if you try but its hard.
Honestly, a super nice person, but not the best professor. I think she cares about her students and wants everyone to do well, but she makes the class really hard. She's lecture heavy and you need to remember lots of numbers and specific details for exams. I will say that you learn a lot, but even if you study a lot the exams are still very hard.
I was scared to take her because of all the reviews, but she was actually a very good professor. Her lectures are very interesting they only fall back is she goes so fast it's hard to keep up with notes. She definitely helped me gained the skills to actually learn and understand material and not just memorize it. Be prepared to study!
I hated this class Janet SPEEDS through every lecture and sometimes doesnt even have enough time to finish. Exams are extremely hard even if you rewatch the lectures she posts and study from her materials. Labs are stupid have little value. Dont take this class unless you have to. She also gives TONS of busy work.
Professor Macon is a great professor. The people who struggle in her class are the ones who don't stay on top of the material. There is quite a bit of homework but its there as a resource and helps your grade. She records ALL her lectures so you can go back to rewatch any! She does really care about her students and makes the class interesting.
Consider this a 4 or 5 credit course. I wish Prof. Macon would be more selective re. what info. she puts on the tests-- as it is, you need to memorize EVERYTHING; every piece of data and random aside. Start typing your own notes during lecture (don't bother with the gap notes) & fill in gaps with her recordings. Use quizlet. Remember quizzes.
I have never had a professor have so little trust in their students. She goes the extreme length to scare students when taking a test even through this coronavirus epidemic. Her tests are so confusing and her lectures have too much information in such little time. I liked her in labs, but I saw people always falling asleep in lectures. Just HARD!
Prof Macon is very passionate about nutrition, and she gives you gap notes so you know exactly what you need to know for quizzes and tests. I really enjoyed the material we learned about in lecture and reading the smartbook modules. All in all she is one of the best professors I had and makes learning anatomy easier if you take it at the same time
She is very informed and her passion for nutrition is evident in her lectures. The class is truly very interesting and teaches a lot of info that I apply to my daily life. Her exams can be very difficult though, but you get a lot of points and extra credit in other forms too which is nice. Have to work for the grade, but it isn't too bad
The class itself is very interesting and the information is presented in easy to understand lectures with power points. The issue is that test questions don't always correlate with what the power points say. I always feel confident with what I learned until I get into a test and it doesn't match up with what we were taught.
This professor is very very smart in her profession. I took this class as a freshman and was not ready for the amount of studying and preparation that would go into this genera education course. Tests and quizzes have a lot of "select all that apply" questions which are hard when it comes down to every nutrient.
Love this professor! However, you do have to go to lectures and take notes to understand. Her tests and quizzes are timed but all the information is laid out on the gap notes that she creates for students. Study tip is to rewatch the lectures and redo the gap notes the week before for the test and study that way. It is a lot of information in 1 cla
Professor Macon is a good professor and you can tell she cares a lot about what she is teaching. She gives you gap notes to follow along with lectures and studying those for tests is very helpful. The class is interesting and if you watch the lectures and study you will be fine.
Janet is passionate about what she teaches and I think that it shows during her lectures. The expectations were clear at the beginning of the semester about due dates and exams/quizzes. She gives a lot of easy points with the modules and the weekly quizzes. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities to makeup for any missed points.
Any rating on this app that is bad for Prof Macon for HERS 205 is only from their own lack of effort themselves as a student, not Janet's. The exams reflected what we learned and talked about for 95% of it. We were offered make up points on exams which gave me A's on every exam and all I did to study was make a quizlet and maybe rewatch lectures.
Janet is nice over email and she's always easy to reach. This semester she has been understanding of students needs and has been willing to talk over any test questions that students felt like shouldn't have been on the test. The people who have a problem with her have probably never taken a college level class before. Pay attention during lectures
Janet really cares about nutrition and it shows during her lectures. Only complaint is that she talks really fast, but the lectures are recorded so you can go back and watch anything you missed. Some people never learned how to study for a college level class which is where her bad reviews come from. Rewatch the lectures and make quizlets from them
She is very organized and knows the material well. You print out notes and fill them in during lecture so its easy to know what you should be studying. There are a couple opportunities for extra credit and the two lowest quizzes get dropped. Overall, the class isnt bad, just do the assignments and study your notes.
She is very passionate about what she teaches but quizzes and exams are full of trick questions and complicated questions. Her class is FULL of homework and quizzes. Gives 10 points back on exams if you put in the work to get those points back.
This is the professor that high school warned you about. If there is any simple mistakes there will be points taken off. Very little communication between the professor and her students. Class is easy enough but points are taken away very easily. Tread lightly! Interesting class though with same stuff to do every week so that makes it easy.
Overall, Janet is a great professor. However, her tests do not always correlate with what was learned in class. Also don't expect her to put the extra credit points in if you're close to an A because "if you have an A because of extra credit, you did not earn that A".
Janet is well known for being tough, but I view it more as having expectations. She is very knowledgeable and caring, get to know her before you judge her. She is there for her students and gets to know you by name if you let her. Her classes can be material and detail-heavy but everything you need to will be told to you or in her prepared outlines
Professor Macon did a great job changing her coursework during the pandemic. The homework for the ASYNC version was super consistent and clear making it really easy to keep up with!
This class I feel is taken too seriously for a nutrition class especially if you aren't majoring in nutrition which not many are. The class is set up very nice with the same routine each week so you know what to expect. Tests are hard if you don't study, not horribly hard if you do. Theres an assignment always due on Monday which can get annoying
Prof Macon is good, but be ready to put in a lot of work. I wasn't expecting so much for a nutrition class. It is interesting and she will help students who attend her office hours, but tests are difficult. Luckily they offer retakes for 3/4 exams so its easy to improve your score. It is possible to get an A but be ready to really work for it.
Professor Macon can be very intimidating at first, but as the semester moves along she becomes less scary. You have to work hard if you want to receive a good grade. You do get graded on attendance for lab, its like 66 points, so I would go and the stuff she tells us in lab sometimes pops up on the exams. Overall, work hard and you'll do fine!
I took this class with prof. Hanson as well, she at least answered my emails, but with no help. I explained my situation, explained what I had going on and was basically told to suck it up and study better. The lecture are long and labs are to short its, hard to learn when you would rather sleep during there long lectures!
I thought this class was going to be remotely impossible during the first couple weeks of the semester; however, it's a very attainable class if you put in the effort! Janet is clear about what she expects out of you, but she has every reason to be. Show up to lectures, take detailed notes, go to lab, and study!! It's not easy, but it shouldn't be.
Janet is good at explaining things and has interesting lectures. She records all of the lectures and puts them online. I only attended mandatory labs and exams in person. I recommend taking very detailed notes and rewatching lectures multiple times to fully understand concepts. You have to put in effort but there are lot of points available.
She is very smart and intimidating, she knows her stuff. They expect a little too much for a pre-req class, but I really enjoyed it overall. Prepare to spend lots of time studying, cramming will not get you far on these tests (trust me I would know). The tests go very in depth content-wise, but it is clear what is expected of you.
Janet's class has lots of material. The lectures were taught by her and Kent both so it gets confusing. Expects a lot of students, but offers quite a bit of extra credit. You will need to study days before the exams, but there are reflection assignments to get points back. Didn't hate this class, but didn't enjoy it either.
Prof. Macon is okay. She isn't good or bad. She takes the class way too seriously and makes it seem like a 400 level class. She is overall nice, but she expects A LOT.
Do not take this class if you don't need to for your major. It is so much work. I put in 3-4 hours every day and barely passed.
Janet was the absolute worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't care about her students and if one thing is wrong on an assignment, be ready for zero credit. The only good thing about this class is Kent. The exam questions reflect a 400 level class, not 200. Labs were interesting and interactive.
I did not mind Janet's lectures. She can be kind of brutally honest, but she is not a terrible professor. Not my favorite professor and is kind of hard to approach outside of class as you don't know how she will react. Her gap notes are very easy to follow along and understand but lots of multiple select questions on exams, making them pretty hard.
Janet is a little intimidating at first but I like her lecture style and her GAP notes. The lectures are recorded which is extremely helpful to rewatch them if you don't quite understand something the first time. you heard it. Tests are difficult and some of the questions are not covered in the class which is unfair in my opinion. Overall good prof
Tests are oddly hard in this class. Prof Macon is intimidating but has a good heart behind her. There really is not any sympathy though if you do not follow directions, or not prepared for class/lab.
Her class was hard but her lectures were clear and very useful.
Dr Macon wasn't my favorite professor it might have been because I wasn't interested in the course. This course is lecture heavy. Attendance is required for the lab portion of this course. The exam are extremely hard so prepare to study ALOT. If you don't need to take this course don't do it.
Professor Macon was an average professor. I easily passed this class with a 98% and never really had to study for exams. Show up to class and lab, do the weekly quizzes and modules and you will be just fine. The exam reflections are also awesome and bonus points should help you get the grade you want.
Probably my least favorite class I have taken at Winona. It should not be labeled at a 200 level class with how the exams are. Studying was a nightmare with how much information is in each section in such little time since there is 4 exams. Best thing to do in this class instead of making flash cards or study notes, rewatch the lectures.
Professor Macon was average. It often seems that she treats the class as a higher level course though. She provides gap notes for lab/lecture but often lectures up to the last second and speeds up at the end to fit it all end. Almost 1000 points over the semester, random lecture attendance quizzes, and graded on lab attendance.
Easily one of the most condescending and unemphatic professors that I've ever dealt with in my life. You're a professor at Winona State and worked at Hyvee before this, settle down. I pity her daughters for having to deal with her.
Pretty average professor. She and another man worked together to teach the class and by the end of the semester, I was so much more excited to see the other guy in class instead of Macon. She wasn't terrible, but she could improve a lot.
HORRIBLE- leaves paragraphs of notes up for .2 seconds and won't let you take photos to keep up. Also doesn't post lecture notes power point. NOBODY WANT THE RECIPE TO YOUR MOMS PEACH COBBLER!!! Only talks about the obesity epidemic and not any diets catered to certain people. #gobacktoHyVee #pleasehiresomeoneelsewinona
Dr. Macon is a very good professor, I took her Nutrition HERS 204 class and it was difficult but interesting. You can do mediocre on every single quiz and exam but as long as you do the assignments etc you will pass with a high grade. If you get to know her she is a very nice person. Be prepared to study a lot, and make sure to ask questions.
Macon wasn't a bad prof, she simply expected hard work from her students. HERS205 is definitely difficult, but if you stay on top of studying and manage your time, you will do fine. The exams are fairly difficult, so understanding rather than just memorizing is important. She's very clear in lecture! But don't take the class unless you HAVE to.
She was kind of condescending at times, but she wasn't that bad. I had her for my HERS204 lab, she gave clear instructions and the labs were generally pretty easy. She's oddly passionate about obesity but I guess we all have our quirks. Very mid.
The class consisted of a couple group projects but how we would be graded was clearly stated and openly shared. We got to try a lot of different types of food as well. Janet is a very kind and thoughtful professor. She cares about her students. So, she holds you to a high standard because she wants you to learn more about yourself and our world.
Janet Macon needs to learn how to be tactful when discussing hard topics such as body image, obesity, and eating disorders. She says she was a nutritionist but she's very straightforward and doesn't seem to care if she's being offensive to students with the above problems. Macon also accidently seems to advocate for having an eating disorder.
Exams can be tough so make sure you attend class and study. You have weekly quizzes and modules but it really isn't that difficult. Janet is very knowledgeable and willing to help. She promotes healthy relationships with food which makes everything feel more comfortable. I enjoyed her a lot and it made me declare a minor in nutrition.
You have to study every detail from the labs and lectures to do well on the exams (I learned that the hard way on the first test). The modules are also easy points and help with the exams. The class is overall not bad, and Janet does a really good job teaching this class.
You get tickets for attending lecture, so attend. She uses gap notes, which is nice, however is horrible at time management. You will be watching lectures at home of what she missed during class. Tests were difficult, and you had modules/quizzes every week. Be prepared, as you are not able to make them up.
Somewhat unapproachable. Tests are difficult- make sure you are reviewing EVERYTHING before the exam. Weekly modules are easy points though. There are random lecture attendance questions, so make sure to go.
The class honestly wasn't as hard as every student and Janet preached it would be. This class uses background knowledge from AP so I recommend you take that before taking this class. She co teaches this with another guy. There are so many points in this course that you can get a 50% on every test including the final and still pass with a B very meh
The reviews to this professor make her out to be way worse than she actually was. Janet is very knowledgeable and passionate about nutrition, and that's very clear in her lectures. My tip for studying: Do not fill out the entirety of your gap notes during lecture so it forces you to go back and watch the lecture videos. You can do well if you study
She is very uninformative. Not very knowledgeable in what she is teaching. The class was half online and half in-person. She is a very relaxed grader but can be a stickler when it comes to a mistake in the grading or something like that. She is something. I would not recommend. This class is book heavy and the tests are not related to the content.
Overall Janet is such a good teacher. She is very passionate and knowledgeable about this course and it is clear in her lectures. There's over 1,000 points in this class and there are quizzes every week. The exams are hard, but as long as you study, you will be fine! Honesty, I loved Janet and would hands down take another class with her.
Was easily the most un empathetic, difficult, and blatantly rude professor I have ever dealt with. If you have to miss class or have a medical issue that prohibits you from doing homework, you might as well forget about passing. She is extremely unapproachable and refuses to find a solution if a medical issue arises. Is also extremely insensitive.
Dr. Macon is very passionate about what she teaches and her lectures are interesting. However, the tests are difficult. Often, there are questions in the exams that don't reflect any of the gap notes, which makes it hard to prepare yourself. Additionally, she is not considerate when it comes to missing exams, even if you have a doctor's note.
Macon's class can be challenging, but staying on top of studying and using tools like Unstuckstudy really helped me succeed. The exams are tough, so understanding the material is key. Lectures are clear, and the interactive labs are interesting. Overall, it's a course that requires effort, but the efforts are worthwhile.
This was one of the most difficult classes I have taken. Macon is very direct when it comes to weight and being healthy, and is insensitive. Her responses to emails are often passive-aggressive. The tests are very detailed, so make sure you know EVERYTHING. Didn't enjoy this class at all, but needed it for my major.
Janet is a great teacher and very passionate about Nutrition making the content easy to learn. However she is very passive aggressive and expects you to know everything. If you make a simple mistake she will call you out. Don't ask for points back on anything or she will lecture you on how students are selfish and undeserving.
I think this class was very doable, There are four tests, weekly modules/ quizzes, and two other assignments. If you stay up with the content and try, you will do just fine.
the exams are definitely the hardest part of this course because they cover so much material. if you do well on everything else in the class you can still definitely pass with a B (i never scored higher than a C on the exams). my friend and i once got the same lecture ticket and she got 5/5 while i got 2/5 even though we answered the same so beware
There were four exams that were really tough. If you study and keep up you can do well. Janet is very passionate and so brilliant, I liked learning from her.
Had her for my HERS204 lab and attendance was mandatory and there was lots of group work for the first 6 weeks.
