i wouldnt take another teacher for a speech class
She was one of the best professors I have ever had, gave me confidence in public speaking in its many forms. Highly recommend her!!
Great Prof. Had her for Sph 106 and 250. Wish I could have her for more classes.
Very difficult to get along with, but she was always right.
I would not take her again. She has a weird obsession with her son, which happened to be in our class! She will not give you the time or day if she doesn't like you. She assigns group work and expects alot our of you.

She missed a lot of classes for someone so up tight about attendance. Tests were in groups making them easy, and so was all the class work. Not very helpful and she ALWAYS had to be right. It was her way or "write a speech about it!"

The woman drove me nuts. She had an attitude of being so above everyone else in the class. She was very rude and an extreme drama queen. However, the class is an easy A if you can put up with her

I absolutly loved her courses! I had her for Interpersonal Communications and Public Relations and she was very helpful, sweet, and overall a very enjoyable professor to have. She is so easy to talk to... perfect for a communications course! I'd take her!
Drama Queen! I knew her whole life's story 2 weeks into the course. Didn't even do first speeches until 6 weeks in. Very easy but too much time wasted on personal. She thinks very highly of herself, but not a good teacher. Feel sorry for communications majors. I only took it because I had to.

This woman is so full of herself! She was never on time to class, would stop class to talk to her buddies, very unclear, and she always talked about herself. She crammed everything into the last three weeks of class because she wasted so much time. Take this class with a different professor.
i learned nothing valuable in this class. she spent so much time talking about irrelevant nonsense that she had to cram nearly an entire semester in to the last three weeks. none of the material was properly explained and she was chronically late. sorry i thought this was a college, silly me.
Learned stuff at least through all of her self absorbed talk, She is rude and ,,, ok im only to be nice,( bites my tounge). Take Cotttril or the indian guy and do yourself that favor! It is esay to get an A in her class however why deal with her voice and horriable jokes, She needs to retire!
I would recommend this class mostly because it is REALLY easy. She gets very annoying and takes herself and her job way too seriously. Also she is really nice but it is an easy A and if your outlook on college is like mine.....that is a good thing.

I would recommend her speech class. I am very shy and the worst speaker in the world and I even got an A. She talks a lot about herself but she is very kind to her students. Just be ready to present when you agree to and you will do fine.
She is a a good teacher and all, but don't expect to learn any thing. She is very emotional the lady cried in class about President Bush and how good of a president he is. Amazingly I passed both classes with a A but didn't learn any thing, just went with my gut instincts
I love Dr.J...She makes the difficult task of speaking in front of people into a fun learning experience...she makes you feel very comfortable and puts any pressure on first time speakers..I highly recommend her...another thing Brown El at center campus SUCKS!
The professor regularly reviews this site. The comments here are noted to improve teaching and learning. As the Chair of Speech Communication, I bear the responsiblity for students, adjuncts, curriculum, and equipment. The economy has not permitted a replacement for a full-time second instructor.
Dr.J was the most fun of any professor I've had at Macomb yet. She tells stories about her life to help ease the aprehension of students who don't like speaking in front of others. As long as you do the work and come to class, you'll do well in this class.
During my public relations class I found Dr.McKenney to be nothing but delightful. She gave plenty of real world examples. She expects you to do the required reading so she can do the extra things in her presentations. I have to think that the previous ratings are by people who didn't get her.
Some say Dr J is silly and sure she is, but what people dont realize is she does it to be personable and help students relax.You learn as much as you put in from her class.I dont go to MCC anymore but she has taught me more things to help me get through a big university than any other prof ive had
Dr.McKenney has written a book for this class. If you read the book, you will do very well in this class. The book has helpful hints and tells you how to write the outlines so you can easily get an A in the course.
Dr Js published book has not only helped me in speech but in my English classes as well. There is brand new equipment that enhances her teaching style. She works on your personal presentation so you not only look good but you sound good too.This is one of the few classes I have actually made friends
Dr.J provided a tough but fair class. The work was too much I thought, but from talking to others, that is just my opinion. I'm now out in the workforce and I'm starting to realize her class has helped me to a great degree. If you want to be prepared for the real world, take her class.
Worst professor ever. Has attendance policy, but is always late herself. 6 weeks in and no syllabus!? Full of herself and spent the first 2 classes talking about how great she is and how everyone should feel lucky to have her as an instructor. Give assignments and leave your personal life personal.
I had Dr.J last sememster and while she was late for a few classes, it was never more than 10-15 minutes. This didn't bother me as it gave me more time to study the material and work on my speeches. She does tell stories about her personal life, but they are examples for the material she's covering.
Dr. J is an awesome person and teacher. She makes writing speeches and essays easy by giving a detailed outline. Dr. J is a loving, giving, personal person. She is interested in your life and shares her life to show equality. She is a wonderful woman and I was honored to be one of her students.
I put this class off for a long time but Dr. J made it as painless as possible. I am the worst speaker and things turned out all right. She does a lot of her teaching by telling personal stories with messages in them that relate to speaking and the course. I thought speech would be a lot worse than it turned out to be. I recommend her.
Very nice Prof. Sometimes absent minded, but for the most part very helpful. The only problem I had with her is her persistent talk about GOD!!!! As a devote athiest, I had a major issue with this. Macomb is NOT Bob Jones University!!
Good teacher
She isn't the best professor if you want to learn....but the class is pretty easy if you show up. She is easygoing and really goes off on topics that have little actual relation to speech. Extremely nice person but maybe not the best professor ever.
I took it several years ago while I was still in high school. P.S. if you're still in h.s. DON'T TELL HER! The work was difficult, but as long as you do it, you can get an A. Sure, she talks about herself a lot, but she deserves to. All in all, I learned a lot about getting my point across. Several times since then I have been glad I took it.

I entered this class with a fear of public speaking. Thanks to the professor's outgoing personality and student friendly teaching style, I'm now able to speak in front of any size group. She tells stories that share what it's like speaking in front of large groups. This helped me get over my stage frieght. If you need this course, take it with her.
Well this woman pretty much thinks shes the****! Makes you buy the book she wrote, so stupid she could of just given us those handouts! And shes currently cramming all of our speeches on us in the last 2 weeks, bcuz she never came to class or wasted our time talking about her health issues! Not a good prof but could of been easy if she didnt cram

Her stories are interesting. I'd rather listen to stories than have to read the book. She's good at what she does. She makes the class fun and her creativity of topics is awesome. Overall, come to class, be prepared, do all that she assignments, come for presentations, and you'll be fine. She's a very good story teller. She's approachable. :)
She was very full of herself and got mad at you if you weren't as interested as she was. She had an attendance policy she upheld however she was late to class almost everyday. She spent all our class time talking about herself and how great she was and then crammed all of our speeches at the last minute. She is not a very good teacher at all.

Public Speaking was not one of my favorite things in the world, but after this class it became second nature. Her stories helped put things into perspective and made me feel at ease. You do have to speak in this class, but she will make you feel welcome. Since this class is required for SPCH majors, take it with her. You won't regret your decision.
She never really explains anything and pretty much talks about herself. I had a fear of public speaking and makes the environment very comfortable. Believe me, even if she doesn't explain anything it's seriously an easy A. Take it summer semester and you'll get an A.

Dr. McKenney from day one was late on a regular basis. The entire semester she was absent almost half the classes. Many times when we would work hard on a presentation, she would not be there the day we were to present it. When we would deliver a speech, she seemed disinterested. It was a very discouraging experience. She should retire.
This was a very difficult and confusing class, due to the professor. There was no consistancy, she was missing almost half the classes. Someday she would come in very up, and then the next time extremly moody. Our class learned nothing, because her focus was herself. Avoid if possible, needs to retire.
She may seem mean but inside she is a really good and terrific person.
She was absent a lot, which caused a lot of problems. Class was very disorganized. She talked about herself and her life experiences more than she talked about the class. I think she gave everyone an A. She didn't teach anything. I am very disappointed.
I had her for a group communication class and she wasn't that bad. The people on here are incorrect, I learned alot. Yes, you do have some paperwork to do, but that is what will happen in the real world as well, so get use to it. As someone in their 30's with life experience, this instructor is no different than a boss.
I had this professor for her interpersonal class as well as a few others. Her teaching style and instruction helped me receive a communication scholarship award from a local university. My experiences in her class have helped prepare me for all my future classes as well as workforce aspirations. If you have similar goals, take her.

if you have to take spch just as a prereq and do not care take her because if you do the work you are definite to get a A+ i did. and alot of times she never shows but its worth losing gas if she does not come. lol
I was terrified of taking speech class and heard the one at center campus was off the wall. I took Dr. J's and within the first day I was comfortable with the other classmates. She has been late alot but it gave us all a chance to talk to each other to get relaxed and I have to say, if you havent taken this class and need to. TAKE IT NOW WITH HER!!
An ego like hers would make more sense if she were at Harvard or Yale, but at MCC? Get over yourself. Writing your own shoddy textbook does not make you a scholar. She wasted SO much time with her nonsense and dramatics. She made us sit and watch as she cried to public safety b/c janitors took her stack of newspapers. Yeah. Don't bother with her.
Do not take her Im warning you. Do not take her for 1060,2500, or any other communication class. This woman has personal issues. Shes crazy. Its either her way or the highway. C'mon people, she's not that bad! She's disorganized, but a VERY easy grader! She is a genuinely a nice, kind person. She is EDUCATED and likes to share her knowledge, she may come across like a know-it-all, but she really does care for her students. She has been through a lot in her life. I didn't learn much in her class, but was enjoyable.

Dr. McKenney is a wonderful teacher. She is a very thorough competent and well educated professor that goes above and beyond the normal educator. She makes sure that her students understand the material. The expectations are clearly spelled out in the syllabus at the beginning of the semester.
Dr J has real concern for students but apparently has not gotten over some bad relationships-that's why she talks about relationships. Lonely Lady. Some think she's full of herself. No,insecure(why always "Dr McKenney"???)Take her class: you'll learn to speak in front of people -- isn't that what it's all about?
Dr. McKenney is very knowledgeable about the subject she teaches and she genuinely desires to help students develop into confident/capable speakers.
The class is sooooo easy. Only problem with her is she is horrible at time management so we didn't even do 2 of the speeches. The ones we did do are very easy. If you need help its better to ask Paul or Janice cause Dr.J is useless when it comes to help. She gets off topic ALOT. Class is easy though
I loved this class, and honestly I hate talking in front of people but I must say she changed that all around for me. I am now doing speeches in my other classes and don't think anything of it anymore. She gave me the confidence I needed to be successful in my future. She's funny, and most of all she cares about you.
One of the easiest classes ever! If you want a easy speech class, take her. She canceled class like 4 times in the semester. And she made our final a take home test! She gets off topic fast though and she thinks she's like the smartest person just cause she wrote a book.
If you have to take speech take Dr. McKenney. She is really very nice and helpful. I learned a lot of speech theory and feel more comfortable giving speeches in front of an audience. If you show up to class do the speech work and online projects, you will get an A. She gives extra credit and tries to help out. She makes the class fun.
Dr. McKenney is excellent at making everyone feel at ease while doing speeches. She is not real clear on assignments, but the tutors are there to help in that regard. Do all your assignments & you will get a good grade. She has to talk a lot,it is a speech class. She is a great professor W/nice values!

Dr. J is knowledgeable & exhibits passion for the subject matter. She knows her students as individuals & cares about them. She creates a positive environment for learning. McKenney uses the old truism, "I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do & I understand. Engagement, involvement, & participation count in her class. Highly recommend!!
she's really nice and she makes her own textbook for the class everyear. all of her online projects are cut n pasted (word for word) from her book and her tests are just the copy and pasted questions from the previous online projects. all of the presentations are really fun and overall taking this class is really fun
Dr. J is a fantastic teacher! She is intelligent and has written a few books! Not a single person will ever go into a speech communication class and be happy about it but she manages to make it fun and stress free! Tests, outlines and book work (which is rare)are easy. Put thought into your speeches and rehearse them and you will get an A!
Very disorganized class. Changes assignments & requirements all the time. Doesn't explain how to do assignments. She might know about speech, but does not know how to teach the material! Worse teacher that I have taken at MCC. Take another professor!!!
Worse professor! Doesn't teach the material & most of the class was lost! Expects you to use tutor because she doesn't teach the material. Assignments due at end with partners. If u have a useless partner it is too bad. Worse experience. DON'T RECOMMEND!!

I took her based on previous comments. I am a straight A student and read this class was an easy A which is why I took it-I hate public speaking. She makes you do a TON of random bookwork that no other speech class has to do. Online quiz things every few weeks and current events 5 days a week for 3-4 weeks. Save yourself time take someone else.
She makes you go visit her speech tutor while she is teaching class. She told us she only made us go because her tutor was going to get let go because no one goes to see her. She can't do anything on her own. I was forced to leave class and miss the lecture so her tutor wouldn't get fired. She also has a tech guy that does EVERYTHING for her.

Dr. J is awesome. The only class I actually loved going to. She was always available to talk if you needed to. She does suffer from some health problems, but she only canceled class once and missed once. Paul (her assistant) is great, and the whole class was just great. I would definitely take her again if I needed another speech class.
Find a different professor. Tough grader, doesn't TEACH (she wrote the book, and doesn't do lecture), sometimes she'll tell you what's on the test--otherwise you better get studying on EVERYTHING. You never know when you have homework unless you can decificer through her stories about her troubled life. I would NEVER take her again. Good Luck wher
Dr. McKenney is an amazing professor with her PhD in Speech Communications. She's very positive and determined to help us succeed, taking us from where we started to higher grounds. She's very passionate about her work, she even wrote the book for the class. So yeah we had to read it to get the worksheets and help us with speeches.

GREAT professor. She is nice and very passionate about your well being. It's an easy class ONLY if you apply yourself and try on every assignment. She's good at explaining things, but not the best. She's there to help her students. If you're confused on anything. ASK and shes willing to help. FUN assignments:) She gives EXTRA CREDIT. LOVE HER
I haven't learned anything because she always goes off topic ---always. Even during your speeches she will interrupt you. She's always late to class but expects you to have perfect attendance. Regardless she's an easy A but you will literally sit in class and listen to her jabber about things that are not of the course material.
She seems like someone you'd have a fun time with over coffee, but not someone you're going to get a lot out of in a classroom. She's not clear about what she wants from you for assignments, goes WAY off topic, and I can honestly say 90% of what I learned in class came from the book, not her lectures. Seems like a nice enough lady though.

She makes the class a blast, don't listen to any of the negative comments; you have to actually take her to know her! She is the best speech teacher you can get, she is also very understanding. she doesn't clarify her assignments clearly. Every time she assigns a speech, I found my self confused. If it wasn't for my classmates I would have failed. she also assigns this weekly assignment where you have to keep track of the news, which is so annoying. she also gets off track a lot. midterm and final are based on online projects.
Very unclear about what is expected of you. Makes you do current event logs which take a couple hours only but is only worth 5 points. You are expected to find five times the amount of the minimum sources for a speech so if you have minimum of 5 sources for a speech you need at least 25.
I had her winter 2016, and she canceled like every other class. She went off on this girl during the end of the semester because the confronted her about how we never learn anything in class. We did not have a midterm and she had to exempt one speech because there was no class time for them (not complaining about that). Final was also online based.
Awesomr proffesor. Almost done with her class. She is very leniant and understanding and if you just focus on your work you won't hate her class. I actually am sad this semester is ending she is such a nice lady. Possibly the best proffesor I've ever had. I can't believe she has bad reviews even. Definetly hope she teaches more classes. BEST
I still have no idea what she wants. She's unorganized and missed about 8 classes this semester. She's also emotionally unstable. I feel bad, she needs someone in her life to talk to because I learned next to nothing in this class. Attendance policy is anything after 5 absences (including medically excused) reduces your grade by 100 points per day.

One of the best professors at macomb. She really is reasonable with people and her class is decent. All you do is give speeches. She also seems very intelligent and talks up to date about political, world, and military news. Absolutely loved her class, might even retake. If you pay attention, she really does make you learn some real life things.
Dr. McKenney is a sweet lady, but as a professor, she is not the most organized or professional. She cancels classes without much notice. She changes and updates the schedule regularly, making turning in assignments very difficult. Easy A, but just a poor professor. Wouldn't take her or recommend anyone else, looking to learn something.
Took her for a 12 week class. It was very unorganized, but I liked her. She does go off topic a lot but I do believe she is a nice caring lady. I was stressed a lot in this class but I did fine. Would take again if I had to!

Janet McKenney is a nice lady and her class is very easy, but she is not very professional. She constantly rearranges the schedule, consistently shows up to class late, and sometimes changes assignments without telling the students. On the bright side, if you follow her outline when giving your speeches, you will likely get an easy A.
I really liked her and don't know how she has so many bad ratings. She would talk to the class and not just assign work like some professors. She is very understanding and will work with you. Class isn't that hard all you do is give speeches.
Professor McKenney is a nice person, but she lacks in her abilities as a professor. It took her six weeks to get us a course schedule and the mandatory textbook that she wrote specifically for our class. She was immensely unclear in explaining her expectations, but she was not understanding if you were confused by her scattered directions.
Doctor McKenney is awesome! She is very passionate about speech and takes her class very seriously. Class was cancelled a few times but that wasn't an issue because she made sure we got everything done at home using the textbook that she wrote for us. She is very clear on directions and I would highly recommend her for speech 1060.
On one speech I got a few points off, I wanted to clarify what I did wrong not to fix my grade but to learn. She started arguing that I just wanted a perfect score with ad hominem attacks and dismissing my confusion. Her assistant had to step in and explain that her instructions were unclear, she still did not listen. Don't question what she says!
She is a super easy professor. All of the online homework questions are straight out of the book, and the midterm and final are word for word the same questions that were on the homework. Midterm was in class, final was online. Easy grader, just follow her outline for the speeches.
I have never felt more confused in my life. Her class is like being in Wonderland and you are Alice. Pure mental chaos and stress as there is no organization. She is all over the place and nothing is clear.
The most unorganized professor I have ever taken. Shes nice but she cancels class all the time and expects us to pick up her slack. Assignments are never clear. Grades easy but takes forever to grade things and to assign them. Also a lot of the assignments are given on canvas and it takes 12 years for them to even get posted.

She is sweet and runs such an easy course. She gives you an outline for the speeches you write, which makes it easier. She cancels class a lot, which I never had a problem with. Homework assignments were online but went in the exact order as they appeared in the book. Her lectures were off topic sometimes. She also let us out very early

The most confusing professor i've ever had. She made you to buy her own written book,which is not worth for this beginning level class. She missed class a lot and made the materails so hard since you will run out of time. I will not say that you can't pass the class,but she made the class difficult since she doesn't have any idea what she is doing!
She was extremely understanding regarding attendance and people coming from work to classes. She did miss class once, but dropped an entire speech. She also gives you class time to finish homework in class and its done as a group. She graciously graded and gives you plenty of time. She was very upbeat and reasonable.
If you are in college to actually learn please take this class with a different professor. She doesnt actually teach you anything, just talks about personal matters. My class has no idea when anything is due and we have learned more from a substitute than Mckenney. She is a very nice lady, but class is just one big confusion.
She is nice and a caring person. Went off topic alot and had lots of subs for the class. Overall the class was easy follow the outline of the speech and its very useful to create it. The homework was super easy and all the answers for the test were in the book word for word. Only thing I did not like about her was her lack of replying to emails.
Takes a long time to grade you. I had her when we switched to online (COVID-19) and I give her a lot of credit for trying to make a speech class work completely online. Stay on top of the work and give some effort in your speeches and this class will not be challenging. She's a great person, and very qualified.
This professor gave so much unnecessary busy work homework. She doesnt respond to emails until weeks later usually. Doesnt respond to all parts fo emails.. And she isnt clear in her instructions. Almost every class we watched movies and we were required to watch more on our own time. Grading scale is off.
Great professor, but she can talk a lot lol. She knows what she's teaching and you can tell just by her age. I had her in class and on online due to COVID-19. Her class was the only 1 so I had no choice but to take her & she is not a good professor at all. She gives so much work & everything is due on Thurs with 2hr Zooms on Mon/Tues. We had to fill out a topic sheet to get our topics approved & she sent it back 6 days later, 2 hours before it was due! She has a PhD & her excuse? :"I left it in drafts"
I took Dr McKenneys speech 1060 class and she is a very laid back and helping She may take up to a couple days to respond to emails but she is very kind and will help you if you need help and may even give you extra time for your assignments if asked Def recommend and as far as the grading goes just make sure to follow her outline and rules
Considering it is speech communications, you would think she would know how to communicate to students, but you you will have a ton of questions & be confused with each speech, zoom call and even the book; which she wrote. On Zoom calls she talks about whatever pops in her head at the moment. Also grades everything the last 2 weeks of class.
Do not take this teacher. This professor is probably the worst professor I've ever had. Not clear on directions, cancel class often to where you're teaching yourself, gives a bunch of busy work without clear instructions and without a lot of time for doing so. Very confusing and bounces from point A to point Z. Save yourself the headache.
Overall class was not that bad but the profesor made it very confusing. Never gave clear directions and then got mad when no one knew what to do. Cancelled class almost every week right before. The professor made this class unnecessarily confusing and stressful.
She is SO tough to follow and SO unreliable. Her lectures are completely incoherent and the directions are never clear. She does not know how to use technology and it negatively impacts her teaching. She cancels class constantly and talks too much about her (very conservative) political views to the point where it is inappropriate.
Overall as a person she was very sweet and very understanding. She had a lot of health issues my semester and we were in the middle of covid but, she just never had class and had to cancel multiple speeches and just gave us dull credit for them. If i didn't need this class to excel in my future i wouldn't be so upset.
She is a sweet, humorous person. However she is the most unorganized professor I have had. I had to redo three major assignments on the last day of the course, because she had miss placed them, and did not tell me until the last day. That being said I did learn several good tips from her and she was always willing to help, she was just unorganized.
I love her so much! Her directions are clear. I like her stories and how it incorporated to what we are learning. She gives us time to do the assignments and speech presentations. She's understanding and kind. I highly recommend her!!
Hands down the worst teacher I've ever had. She cancelled class over 15 times the whole semester, sometimes for no reason. She was constantly changing due dates on projects. She goes off on tangents unrelated to what we are learning, most of them being bigoted. She is racist and sexist and often throws her political and religious views in our faces
She canceled class every week. In a 16 week course (meeting once a week) we probably only had class 4 or 5 times. She would say it was due to health issues, snow, or even squirrels. It was very frustrating and overwhelming when you just want to learn. Please be aware of what you are getting into before you take this course.
she is really bad. her lectures were extremely vague, she canceled class the first six weeks of the semester, and she gave out 3 to 5 random, out-of-the-blue assignments that were always due the next time we had class, which is not enough time. she goes off topic a lot and is very disorganized. she's a very strange lady too. avoid her if you can.
Dr. J is a great professor. She makes you feel comfortable when you have to speak in front of the class, and grades fairly easy on speeches. If you pay attention to lectures and do the readings, you will get a good grade. She is funny and tells great stories. She is fun to talk to and often engages in conversations with the whole class.
If you want an easy class, she is a good professor. but if you actually want to learn and enjoy class time, don't. She cancels class often and allows along time for assignments to be due. However, majority of class time (if there is class) is spent with her telling personal stories.
It is important to be on camera and participate in the classes.
Very unorganized professor. Book is 150$ for a speech class? Do not waste your time or money with this professor.
