She does not give you any examples on the board. She expects you to know everything and barley helps you and she does not give you a study guide to study when you have test.
DO NOT TAKE HER DURING THE SUMMER.SHE HAS A HARD TIME COVERING ALL THE MATERIAL IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.I HAD A REALLY HARD TIME IN THIS CLASS.IF I DIDN'T GO TO TUTORING I WOULD HAVE FAILED.
PROMOTE TO CHIEF-LECTURER NOW!!!! I took her class this summer after failing McCoy's class. If you are seeking an alternative to McCoy, this is it!! It is a lot of material to cover over the course of a month, so she has some difficulty, but she is always available in her office hours and was more than willing to set time aside to help.
the worst teacher i have ever seen
Ms. Moloney is a great professor. She talks kind of slowly which makes the class go in a slow pace, which I loved. I took Professor Mccoy last year and failed, now I have an A in Moloney's class. The homework is super easy, but the tests are challenging if you do not study. Study the powerpoints and do the questions at the end of the chapter.
She was a British lady that talked slower. Her lectures are completely boring, but if you've taken chemistry in high school you should pass. I hardly went to class. You only miss out on clicker points which are a very small percentage of your grade.
She is not clear in lecture. I had to relearn the powerpoints through the textbook. She goest too fast to understand the information during lecture. What helped me get an A in this class was to do the end of the chapter questions and go to her office hours.
Great teacher. Very helpful. Here are a couple of tips to do great in her class. Show up, answer correct clicker question, do homework, read text book and study lecture notes= A
She is very sweet and very willing to help her students. She talks a little slower and makes up her own power points which are cute and interesting. Organic chemistry is not going to be an easy A but it's very doable if you put in effort and study like you mean it. Use flash cards!!!
She's a nice teacher and is always willing to help. Her tests are fairly easy just make sure to do study the notes and do the review at the end of the chapters in the book. Attendance isnt mandatory but recommended if you want an A. She does grade clicker points and the homework is easy, got 100 every time cause you can redo the ones you got wrong
Really nice lady, attend lectures you get clicker points, do homework, all helps toward grade. exams are difficult. go to her office hours for help. not her fault, just isnt an easy subject. I would recommend her out of any other professor for this subject. Slow paced to help you better understand. 4 exams and a final. gives 1 ex.credit opportunity
Extremely nice but very boring. Class is easy. She puts lecture slides online in case you miss anything. Willing to help and extremely understanding. It is a bit hard to follow along in her lectures though, she's not the clearest speaker. Really study for exams, do all the homework. Not a terribly hard class.
She knew what she is talking about. Her tests are hard. If you e-mail her, she rarely replies which is frustrating.
This professor will not help you at all. Don't waste your time going to class, everyone in my lecture taught themselves. Her exams do not cover what we went over in class and she has a major attitude.
This professor is not helpful whatsoever. She will not put forth effort to help any students. Her exams do not represent the material learned or discussed during class. Had to basically teach myself this course. The homework is easy, the exams are okay but she is not a good professor. she will not help you if you need it.
Moloney is an awful professor. Not only is she extremely boring, she is really rude. This is already a difficult subject but if you want to pass you better read your book from cover to cover.
Boring! Test are hard. No need to go to class because everything is on blackboard and she is confusing!
This is an EXTREMELY difficult class but most students have to take it. Trust me when I say she is the best out of all the Chem professors here. This class requires a lot of time and studying but I promise if you study, you will do good. She was always helpful when I emailed her. Honestly, if you can, take this class at a community college.
Dr Moloney is a terrible teacher her tests are hard because its rarely on what she covered in class she is not helpful. No study guide basically all on your own the textbook is your only savior DO NOT TAKE HER. If weren't originally good in chemistry do not rely on her to help you get better this will be your downfall and affect your GPA badly
Mrs. Moloney is a nice teacher but very confusing. Her class is boring. You practically have to teach yourself the information. Tests are around 32 questions from information from 3 chapters at a time which is alot of information and you have an hour to take them. Unfortunately the entire chem dept (lecture) is horrible at this school.
This class isn't easy. You really have to teach yourself the information. She is a boring teacher but she's helpful when you reach out to her. It's not her fault, Chem just isn't an easy class to teach in a lecture.
Moloney is an amazing teacher, only if you pay attention in her class. If you go to all the lectures and take notes, you'll do fine. And you have to STUDY for the test…I mean it is college.
the only way I would consider this class easy is if you find what works for you and sticks to it. She lectures like all of her students are kindergartners, repeating things over and over and talking very slowly. She also stumbles on her words quite a lot which gets annoying after 50 minutes. MAKE YOUR TEXTBOOK YOUR BEST FRIEND!
She is a very fair professor. The exams are not bad if you study. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps extremely. The homework is online and simple
This class was such a burden. Whether it was the painfully boring lectures where she taught things as if we were in kindergarden it would have to be the lack of scheduling around the CHEM 108 lab that corresponds with the class. She almost religiously puts lab tests/quizzes on the same day as lecture exams. Prepare to be bombarded.
IF YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN A GOOD GPA I RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT TAKE HER AS A CHEM TEACHER. SHE IS THE WORST AND DOESNT HELP YOU AT ALL. IVE NEVER FAILED A CLASS IN MY LIFE UNTIL TOOK HER. OF YOU CAN GET DR. BROWN HE IS SUCH A BETTER TEACHER AND HE HELPS YOU TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAMS SO YOUR NOT ALONE. IF YOU GET MOLONEY BE PREPARED TO FAIL
Moloney is the best Chem teacher at this university. She truly tries her hardest to help everyone but with over 300 it is hard (thank ODU for that). GO TO HER OFFICE!! Shes so so helpful and seriously wants to see everyone succeed. Only 3 exams but she does give some hw extra credit. GO TO THE LECTURES.
I had her for both the first and second half. She really isn't as bad as people make it seem. All of the classes are 200+ and she does try her hardest to help as much as she can, it's not her fault the classes are so big. Tests are straight from lectures, if you even go. most don't that's why they fail but blame the professor.. it is college now
She's a hard teacher and does not help you out with study guides/what to prepare for. She reads her lectures basically straight from the book and its hard to understand her. She is helpful during her office hours. You basically have to teach yourself with this class. The tutoring center is your friend!!!!!!!!!!
This is not an easy class at all but she is the best chemistry teacher at ODU. her test are extremely fair. If you study you will do great. The online homework isnt bad and will boost your grade a lot. .. Just study the powerpoints and notes a lot and you will get an A.
best chemistry professor at ODU. the class is very difficult but if you study a lot you will get an A. she knows what she is talking about and her test are always fair. Study the book and powerpoints and you will do amazing !!
This professor is really hard. You don't have to go to lecture because both the power points and the lecture videos are on blackboard. The class is so broad, but she doesn't help you at all.
I took this professor for both sections of chemistry and I've got to say one of the worst professors I've had by far. She goes through her slides very quickly so you can't really keep up during lectures. I usually love chemistry and can understand it, but the way she teaches would constantly confuse me. If you can teach yourself, then do it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! She flies through her slides and can barely speak english. Better off not going and going to the tutoring center than her class.
She reads right off the slides so technically you don't have to go to class because she posts the slides online. However I thought it was useful to go to class because then in her lectures she explains things. Definitely study!! And go to the review sessions for the tests, those are a huge help!
Moloney is a great professor for such a difficult class. I hate chemistry with a passion, but she made it easy and understandable. Her test are relatively easy as long as you pay attention. She will help you when you ask, but its up to you to go to her. Overall awesome teacher for such a crappy subject.
Janet Moloney is not a good professor because she DOES NOT teach !! She literally only reads off of her powerpoint slides. The exams are extra hard for no apparent reason.
She reads directly from the slides that the textbook provides and half the time she is confused on what she is talking about. I have gotten mostly A's in my other classes and I will be lucky to get a C out of this one. Even if you email her for any reason she hardly ever responds and if she does, she is rude in her response. Be prepared...
She reads directly from the slides which are on Blackboard, and she records her lectures. Very monotone voice. The book teaches you better than her (you'll need the same one for chem 107 & 108). Labs are easy. She rarely gives you any other attempts on hw & pre-lectures, so make sure your answer is right before submitting it.
I hated her class
Worst teacher I have honestly encountered yet!! She reads exactly from the slides which are online so there is no point in coming to class. She has many homework assignments and prelectures . 4 test the whole semester that will definitely bring your grade down because her study guides are complete opposite. No Extra Credit or anything! good luck
People don't give Dr. Moloney enough credit. Most bad reviews are by people who do not work hard enough and blame the professor for their grade. She is always willing to help, extremely knowledgeable, and explains topics clearly! Chemistry is a hard course, no matter the professor. If you want a fair and reliable teacher, pick Dr. Moloney!! :)
Dr. Moloney was a great teacher. I see many negative comments but I think many students forget that this is COLLEGE. This is not supposed to be easy, it's Chemistry. She is helpful but you have to ask for it. Very fair and extremely knowledgeable. Definitely recommend this class.
Dr. Moloney is a very boring professor, however I did very well in her course. She posts all her lectures and powerpoints online which makes it easy to study when it comes to tests. She cares a lot for her students and is a quick grader.
There was no reason AT ALL to go to this class. Every time i decided to go to the class i was wondering why i decided to come. I taught myself the whole course. I went to her review session once and left out more confused then i was going in there. She doesnt know what shes saying half the time it seems like. IF YOU DONT HAVE TO DONT TAKE HER. smh
Professor Moloney is a sweetheart. She is helpful and genuinely wants students to succeed. If you do not turn up and do not study for exams, you will fail but that i your fault. Chemistry is tough, but she is an excellent teacher who knows her stuff inside and out. She is always there to help and dedicated to the students. She is excellent!
I took this professor for chemistry 105 and am taking her again for 107. This class is a teach yourself class. She is very helpful if you utilize her office hours she looks out for you. The textbook is mandatory. Attendance isn't mandatory. I read the textbook before the test. I studied her PowerPoint sides test questions come from there.
Only was easy because i took chemistry my senior year in highschool
Only was easy because i took chemistry my senior year in highschool.
This class was hard. Shes a boring professor & her voice is very monotone. She gives a ton of hw along with 2-3 daily assignments a week. Her tests are extremely difficult because she likes trick questions. Your attendance is based on if you answer clicker questions right in class. She is kind & will help you but I would not recommend her.
Hard to understand sometimes, tends to back track on what she says while reading off of the board.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!! She is a nice person overall but lacks in her teaching skills. She rambles a lot and contradicts herself. She is continuously behind in where she should be as stated in the syllabus. She moves at a slow pace then rushes right before a test, and tests you on things she hasn't covered yet. ENGINEERS DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Very difficult, homework before every class and after every chapter. We have been very far behind in material and didn't learn everything in time for some of the 4 tests. TA for recitation isn't very helpful either, however recitation attendance is required also.
She rambles a lot and Im almost certain that she just uses her old powerpoint and doesn't keep relevant with whats on the test. Take someone else.
Must go to class to stay up to date, but lectures are available via video and slides on black board. Grades come from homework, quizzes, tests, and clicker questions.
Moloney was super helpful inside and outside class room. She made sure you understood her content. She gave practice test and gave extra credit built into test and homework
I had Moloney for 2 semesters and she was the worst professors I've had. Had her for 105 & 122. She doesn't know how to teach. Reads off of powerpoint and sometimes powerpoint don't really help. She gives a lot of homework and has makes you use clickers for attendance points, unless you get them wrong then you don't get any attendance points.
Took her over the summer & she was way more helpful than people give her credit for. Chem in general is tricky, but she tries to get points across and she is more than willing to help outside of class. I also had Wallach for the second part, and I would choose her over him due to how approachable she was. She also doesn't over-complicate tests.
JANET IS AMAZING. i took chem previously and the prof didnt care at all. chem & math are my worst subjects too. moloney has study sessions & is super nice when you asks questions. ofc the lectures are going to seem heavy/intense bc theres 100+ ppl but you can easily contact her outside of class. i would 100% take her again, fun fact: she's irish !
She is simply a terrible teacher. Can't control the class, focuses on slides that don't make sense. Has a heavy accent. Doesn't answer questions. Gets mad when you don't understand. I can't even deal with her. AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She isn't really a good professor in my opinion. The way she teaches doesn't really help the students. Many of the students were confused the entire semester. If you take this course and have this teacher prepare to study hard and get a little frustrated, also she uses a app that has technical difficulties often and everyone is required to use.
She was literally one of the worse teachers i ever had. EVER BEEN IN A COURSE AND NOT ABLE TO COMPREHEND ANYTHING? She goes way too fast, complicates everything, gives difficult homework that she barely teaches you how to solve. She doesnt like questions, and she is a terrible teacher overall. Is obvious she loves chem. She shouldnt teach it tho.
Difficult class, but Moloney does everything she can to help her students. Tests are hard and she is a tough grader, but she offers a lot of extra credit. I ended the class with 111%, so getting an A is totally doable. Going to every class is essential to getting a good grade, plus attendance and participation are factored into your grade.
Paying attention in her class is a must if you are in her 5:45 block. Attendance isn't mandatory but it is graded. She held these cool review sessions on every Friday and was very good about answering emails.
Curved almost every test, The lectures are kinda useless and I just learned everything on my own
Took Janet for 105N, was in her M,W,F lecture classes. I hate chemistry, but had hopes that she would've been a good teacher. She is nice, but she is a crappy teacher. All she does is read off slides with a monotoned voice which gets very very annoying and boring. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she uses Tophat to take attendance. Avoid if possible
You might as well teach the material on your own. If you're not good at Chemsitry, best of luck. She reads of the powerpoints and isn't clear when answering students questions. Don't get the textbook, the powerpoints come from the textbook, word to word. Take the class online if you can, or take it at a community college. Try tutoring or SI.
Chemistry isn't an easy subject, but Moloney tries her best. She isn't a bad professor. Most people don't study or do the homework then complain about their grade. You have to put in a lot of effort and go to tutoring if you don't understand something. Hours of studying must go into this class. Don't expect it to be easy.
Absolutely avoid at all cost! Dr. Moloney is the most unprofessional professor Ive ever had in my life. Prepare to learn the material on your own, because she doesnt care if you understand or not. She is not personable or respectable to her students. Absolutely the worst professor at ODU!
This professor was the most disrespectful professor I have ever encountered at ODU. Need help with a topic? Don't dare ask unless you want to be judged. Have an issue with her teaching? Get ready for harassment and demeaning responses. Do not take this professor whatever you do unless you enjoy teaching yourself and feeling incompetent.
She is super caring! She has a lot of knowledge and goes above and beyond to help you in every way! This was the hardest class I have ever taken but she is so sweet and respectful and truly wants you to do well in this class and will help you every step of the way! TAKE HER!
Absolutely terrible. Most boring class I have ever taken. I used to enjoy chemistry, but not after taking this class.
Not a good professor and her lectures are agonizing. She reads off the slides, assign homework in which she never explained how to solve, nothing on the exam is covered in the study guides, and never answers questions during lecture or office hours. You might as well teach yourself the material.
She has an accent and goes through slides very fast. She always gives an extension on homework.
She isn't terrible you just have to pay attention and if you can't learn in class the tutoring building is open M-F and they are so helpful. Chemistry is a hard subject to learn so it won't be easy regardless. Homework every week but very helpful(Probably wouldn't pass without it, exam study guides, exam review sessions. Show up and work hard!
Homework for each chapter, lecture is like high school she is very detailed and gives many examples, attendance and poll everywhere questions
Professor Moloney is actually BETTER than the other options of professors. One reason is because, SHE RECORDS HER LECTURES & POSTS THEM ON BLACKBOARD! You know what that means? Although she goes fast (as any lecture should), she records herself so when you're home you can pause and take notes. She will answer your questions after class. Easy hw.
Online textbook so nothing to pay for, plenty of online assignments (with unlimited redos) to boost your grade, only four tests throughout the semester, in class questions that also boosts your grade.
She was horrible, lectures were long and difficult to understand. Wasnt very available outside of class and wasnt helpful when I reached out to her regarding my grade.
Janet is my girl, although is you plan on sitting in her view don't be on your phone or she will call u out. She also doesn't answer her email but you will likely be in a class of 400 or more so getting feedback from her takes a while also. Its an easy class if you go to the lecture s( which are mandatory) and pay attention.
Chemistry is a difficult subject in itself. You can't expect to not study and get a good grade- it's not realistic. The class is lecture heavy and attendance is taken daily with clicker questions. If you actually study and pay attention you'll do fine, but don't complain about the class and your grade if you don't do your part.
This class was not hard at all. Tests were very similar to homework and review questions so it was hard to fail. Lectures are very boring and you get participation points from answering questions on a website.
Dr. Moloney will frustrate you at some point but only because she is easily flustered. However, I will miss the format, the little things she did that others don't. She records lectures, gives excellent powerpoints and truly makes chemistry simple. If you pay attention she will make you understand. It's boring but it's chemistry, I appreciate her.
Dr. Moloney gives excellent lectures. She is lenient at times when extending homework due dates. She also adds extra credit to every exam. She is organized by providing power points and a playback of every lecture. She does have a monotone and strong Irish accent. Overall, great semester. Learned interesting things.
Dr. Moloney is a great professor and cares a lot about her students. Her lectures are super heavy and she can be somewhat monotone at times, but she does try to spice it up a little here and there. She gives small curves and her homework is basically your exams. As long as you do the homework and practice work sheets, you will get an A.
Definitely lecture heavy and it's sometimes hard to pay attention but that's how lectures go. Didn't show up to class all the time and still got a good grade but attendance and class activities are graded so you need to be there for that. Doesn't offer ec except one right before the final. Not that many exams and the hw's r easy.
horrible. Everything I learned from this class I had to teach myself, which was very time consuming considering i paid. She second guesses herself when she teaches and when you ask her questions she responds as if you are dumb. However, i am very grateful that she gave a lot of extra credit for our final, but that was only bc everyone was failing.
This professor only read directly from the slides given, which made it less compelling to listen to. She uploads the slides on blackboard, which made it quite redundant.
She was just awful nothing else needed to know.
You try to email her and she never responds, and she says shell drop grades but never does.
I was going to write more but here are the most relevant issues from this professor that me and 250+ other students had a problem with. - The professor does not listen to students questions or remarks about the class. - The professor does not give extensions. - The professor reads straight off the powerpoint and THAT IS IT! - She is unkind
Instructor doesn't go into detail to help you grasp the information being taught. She addresses one concept and then immediately jumps into new info. You will end up teaching yourself. She is too smart to teach entry level chemistry because when she teaches she acts like the class already knows the info. Most are failing. Awful experience.
Reads off powerpoint. Expects you to just know how to do equations by telling you how. Doesn't give enough time to grasp info before going to next chapter. Test every 2 weeks with loads of information. You teach yourself. The HW she gives is supposed to help you, but doesn't show you how to get the answer until its due so it hurts your grade.
Made everyone buy tophat for homework assignments, which is fine normally, but we only used it twice. It was a complete waste of money. She assigns homework through Packback, tophat, and blackboard when she could just use blackboard for everything instead. Very test heavy, one test moved my grade 7 points. Rough time for an intro class.
Lets face it, Chemistry is not an easy subject to grasp. I felt Dr. Moloney taught her tests. She did upload her lectures to blackboard which helped if you missed a day. Attendance, poll everywhere, and pack back affect your grade. I am a nursing major and was able to make As on all her tests. This class is easy if you put in the time to study.
The class is pretty basic, and boring most of the times. But just show up and take notes, and it should be an easy A
Even though I don't like chemistry, I liked professor Moloney. She explains the material multiple times and cares about her students. The lectures are not boring and she helps with the homework if you email or meet her in person.
Chemistry is not easy for a lot of people. The material is not that hard if you actually learn it. As long as you put in the work, you can get an A. The lectures are boring, but she does grade attendance. Just read and study the powerpoints well and you'll be fine.
Teaches decent lectures but you might as well teach yourself. What helped me do alright (B+/A-) was retaining info from high school. Top hat ?s are important. It's a subscription and about $30. Make sure you call her Dr. bec if not she'll correct you every time. I would've use pick another teacher but I was in the learning commu
It's a lecture class so make sure to take advantage of tutoring and office hours if you need one on one help, but this class is passable if you just work hard and show up to class.
She has a lot so students so its impossible for her to give individual attention frequently. Show up to every class listen, go to tutoring if you need, use tophat, and you will pass with a good grade. She is understanding for outstanding circumstances. Overall her class was easy and I would take her again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR'S CLASS. strong accent, doesn't explain information, tests had nothing to do with material, she did give extra credit but that was only because the entire class failing.
Professor Moloney's class is HARSH to put it nicely! Her study guides do NOT line up with the tests at all. She is very attendance heavy and doesn't seem to understand that this is an intro class. Also be ready for death by powerpoint. She loves PP. Oh and bonus be ready for lackluster explanations within the powerpoint.
I took professor Moloney's Chem 105 class in spring 2020. During her lectures, she goes very quickly and doesn't thoroughly explain information. This is an intro class, but unless you have prior knowledge of chemistry, you will not do well.
Dr. Moloney was an excellent professor whose expertise on the subject matter was clear. She made CHEM 105 a breeze. Her tests were super easy. There are participation points that require you to come to class and use an app, but they are not a huge portion of the grade. She is very kind and will help when asked.
I had her online in the fall of 2020. She didn't hold zoom lectures, only office hours so attendance wasn't mandatory. She did upload pre-recordered lectures and they all take a couple hours to watch. She's alright. Her PowerPoints are A LOT. A couple of them took me HOURS to write down. For a GenEd class she's not bad.
This is coming from a person with an A in the class, this class is hard. Shes not very good at explaining things. The test are timed. If it wasnt for my tutoring and constant studying I wouldnt be passing. Her online labs can be difficult for no reason (I took lab and lecture) if you have another option of a teacher choose a different one.
I did really well in her class, but with covid-19 happening they decided to put the lab part online. The lab was completely unorganized and when you emailed her she never replied. This professor is very unprofessional. I have emailed her 4 times but not one response. She really only cares about a paycheck and nothing else.
This professor was okay. Reaching out for help was difficult since she focuses on letting teacher assistants help, and they are not always as swift as she is. If you find yourself often needing help in classes, this professor is not for you.
She was a good professor, I had her online class with no Zoom lectures, it was pretty straightforward unless you didn't read through her lectures.
If you put in the work and watch the lectures and really try to learn the concepts, you will pass. BEWARE - if you are hoping to just glide by this class you will not do well. Her lectures are long but she truly breaks down the concepts so you can properly understand. Great chemistry professors are RARE, so take advantage of the opportunity.
Moloney is a very heavy lecture and kind of has an accent which can make it difficult to hear her sometimes. Her test is difficult, you MUST study for them or you will not pass. Extra credit is given on tests, homework, and through the use of an app named top hat. Would not suggest taking her if chemistry and math is not your strongest subject.
When I started chem 105N with Professor Moloney, I thought she wouldn't be as lenient and helpful. Turns out, she was not so bad after all. Her class can be difficult but she does everything to make sure we get the information to pass. Definitely need to invest study time in her class in order to do well. Overall, I would recommend her class.
Chemistry is a hard class but Professor Moloney does grade with a curve so if you do all the assessments and study for the test you will most likely be fine. I am not really a lecture student but the lecturers were fine but pretty fast.
Professor Moloney is always willing to help, I finished this class with an 111. If you ever need help, tutoring in the new Chem building is always there so use that to your advantage. Homework isn't hard and the exams were easy especially since she makes study guides. As long as you show up there is no reason why you can't get an A.
Don't listen to these reviews, Dr. Moloney will stop at nothing to enhance your comprehension of the Fundamentals of Chemistry, e.g. her office hours are incredibly helpful, she uploads all the notes at once so that way you can learn ahead, you get unlimited attempts on the homework assignments, et all. If you apply yourself, you'll do fine.
She was an awful teacher with an accent that nobody could understand!!!!
Professor Moloney was horrible to say the least. This was the absolute worst class I've ever taken at ODU. She moves entirely too fast. She also gives very vague study guides. If you need 105N don't take her class.
She gives a vague understanding of what she is teaching. If you ask questions she tells you "you'll figure it out", and doesn't give help. She uses Top Hat (which is 50 bucks) every day and if you have technical difficulties, that's too bad
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. The course is hard but Janet Molony made it miserable. I can not really understand what she says with her accent and she does not explain the material she just reads it. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, I could teach myself better.
Tests are hard, due to being open response and being strict on mistakes and formatting, but the study guide helps. Weekly homework are decent.
The class is a lot and the teacher is hit or miss a lot of days. Make sure to be ahead on your work so you know what things to ask questions about and use tutoring resources if you want an A. Its gonna be stressful so just dont falter and push through.
Professor Moloney is very test heavy she gives them as much as possible in the testing center. When giving the lecture she goes too fast, not allowing time to copy down notes or answer questions. She told us to buy the textbook but we have yet to need a reason to use it.
60 minute timed exams. Uses tophat to ask questions about things she just taught in the lecture, and if you get the question wrong it counts against you, also gives 1-2 min to answer and its not always easy to do so. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER responds to emails, not enough time during lecture to answer your questions, vague study guides, Just don't.
In my opinion, If you end up in her class, the PowerPoint, worksheets, and homework will come in handy!! At times, it can be hard understanding the lecture when she explains it.
I had 400 students in my class and each exam average was around 50-60%. I studied a lot yet still did badly. I ended up doing average with how she curved. We have HW weekly and 5 exams. She's nice and I think she feels bad we don't do well. This is just a hard class, especially since most of us never had a proper chem class because of covid.
Her exams were the hardest tests I have ever taken. She curved so many exams because so many people were doing badly in her classes. One homework assignment every week, sometimes two, 4 exams plus the final exam. Attendance is graded and you have to interact with tophat (also graded and $50). I can definitely teach myself better she explains poorly
never answers emails , always changes homework due dates to be on HER timing . Dismissive.
The class was difficult for no reason. Moloney does not take the time to aid students when things are not understood. She does NEVER RESPONDS TO EMAILS, NOR DIRECT CANVAS MESSAGE. The Powerpoints are useful if you read them yourself and reiterate to yourself. Professor Moloney reads straight off the powerpoints. Tests are mainly free reponse. RUN.
If you have to take Chemistry, you're in for a treat because this class is awful. She does not teach, there is no point of you coming to class because she teaches off of the PowerPoints that she posts. You have to buy an app to even get some points for the course. Shes bad but I heard the other Chemistry teacher, Pinky McCoy was worse, Good Luck
She is not a bad teacher, if you take good notes during lectures it helps a lot on exams. I recommend taking detailed notes and studying using her study guides they're very similar to her tests
Do not take chemistry 105 with Moloney. She is better at teaching graduate students. Emails are ignored, questions go unanswered, and you will learn absolutely nothing. She teaches from PowerPoints which are on canvas. You will be teaching yourself the math. Rounded every test because most students failed. Khan Academy is your best friend.
This class was awful. There was 400 students in the class. She did not help explain just read off a PowerPoint. All exams were in the testing facility. Final exam was in class but paper pencil and unable to use your resources. She had to curve the exams due to class averages being so low. Uses top hat everyday and part of your grade (50$)
This was a very big class(around 300 students) taught in a large lecture hall. Some people said she talks too fast and that some people get lost in her explanations. I never really had a problem with that, but I could see how some people would. I would say that her lecture is not horrible, but also not great.
Reads off slides and will take off points for unnecessary things like not stapling your paper. Does not give clear instructions and grading criteria for assignments.
Professor Moloney is a decent professor. While her lectures may seem terrible...you gotta show up to class if you wanna pass with an A. Also, study intensely and review over the homeworks and study guides. This class is going to be very easy if you have a strong chem background such as AP Chem or IB Chem.
Professor Moloney is not the best at teaching nor explaining what she is teaching. She does her lecture reading a PowerPoint verbatim. She is a tough grader, her wording in the test and homework is very confusing. I would not recommend taking Chem 105N with her unless you're a Grad student.
Dr. Moloney's class wasn't heavy at all, I took her class in spring 2023 ! She cares about her students a lot and she gives 10+ extra credit for the exams. She gives 4 exams and a final which are so easy. If you took chem in high school u will be fine in her class. Overall, she is a great professor with a clear explanation.
LECTURE HEAVY! She uses powerpoints and usually reads right off of them, so I wouldn't recommend if that isn't not really how you learn. She's not too great at responding to emails and not super tech savy, which can be frustrating. You do have to pay an extra $30 for another application she uses, so be prepared. Not a bad prof just not for everyone
The teacher doesnt provide additional material to understand the subject, restates information instead of clarifying, is unresponsive to emails, and doesn't finish units before scheduling tests. There is no extra credit, and a mandatory assignment site costs $60 on top of the class fee. wouldnt recommend if you don't want to teach yourself.
She's an okay professor. She post videos explaining into detail and her lectures aren't too bad just fast. Prepare for a good amount of homework and exams. Go over the homework's and occasional study guides. She does give extra points on certain exams' recommend recording her if your a slow note taker. Ask questions in class, she's bad with emails.
She's a good professor I'm not sure why so many people gave her such a low score. She has very detailed slides so go over those when studying. She curves generously and you can do the homework as many times as you like. Me and my roommate took this class at the same time and while we didn't work or study together we both got 99% or more.
this is a lecture heavy class, she reads verbatim off of her slides. she is not the best at answering questions from students. There is a canvas test for HW and you have unlimited attempts, also the lowest HW will be dropped. overall a simple class, just make sure you do the HW and study for exams.
Not a good professor, however the course material was structured-well. Studying for the course -- it made sense. Lab is the most difficult part since there is no rubric to the lab questions, therefore not allowing you to understand why you received the grade that you did and improve. She grades harshly on lab papers, and there is no rubric.
Lectures can move quickly, but detailed slides and the option to retake homework help a lot. unstuck AI was a game-changer for my exam prep. Overall, a fair class with a generous curve.
I do hope reads these one day. Dr. Janet Moloney is a very caring and understanding professor, but I she is very monotone with her lectures and it does fly by quick with a LOT of material. Don't do what I did, take notes, practice the problems with her, and keep up with the homework and you should be good. DO.NOT.SKIP.
ATTENDANCE! This course uses Tophat, which counts as points/attendance. Do NOT skip class. Curve for tests is generous. Sit in the front and she will answer all your questions. Kind and understanding. I got super sick (hospital), and she exempt me from an exam no questions asked.
personally i wouldn't recommend taking her , her classes are over packed , when she teaches she just talks don't ask anybody if they have questions or nothing , and she don't respond to emails if you don't answer her a certain way .
This was the only course that I did not do well in. Moloney moves SO fast in lectures and presentations are very hard to keep up with. Most of the material I did manage to learn was self-taught. Lots of homework as well.
I honestly don't think she deserves the low rating she has, she's not the worst professor, it's just the subject that sucks. If you study and take notes, then the material is easy. HW can be retaken and the highest score is kept, she drops your lowest grades at the end of the semester. Attendance is mandatory 100 points per day so show up to class
I was nervous to take this class bc of the low rating but i'm happy I chose this profesor. The class is not hard it's just the subject being taught. You just have to put in the effort, and i dont even mean studying for hours. The professor is very nice too and accommodates. I thought she was be the complete opposite than she is because the reviews.
Professor Moloney class is lecture heavy but she's very detailed and her slides are easy to follow. You will have to study but she's a lenient grader and curves all her exams. The exams were around 20-25 questions so they weren't long or too hard. The final exam was also easy but I would recommend going through her power points if you're confused.
I personally don't know what people have against Moloney, but she's such a great professor, don't let these terrible ratings fool you!! She had PowerPoints, and she also goes over all of it in class. The biggest tip, review as much as you can before class, as she posts lecture videos and go in person to review. She uses TopHat!!
I love Professor Janet Moloney; she's an amazing and accommodating teacher. This was my first time ever taking chemistry, and I still earned a B. She gives four exams with helpful study guides, and while the homework can be heavy, it's great for studying and counts for 20% of your grade. I would 100% take her class again.
The other negative ratings must have been from a different universe. While the class is lecture heavy, it's sort of necessary in order to teach 160+ people at once. Lectures are easy to follow & are recorded. Material is not difficult and tests are properly spaced apart. Curves grades.
Idk why the GOAT HERSELF is rated so low, but she is an amazing teacher. She reminds me of my old high school chemistry teacher: She makes sure you understand, extremely flexible outside of class, goes over graded problems IN CLASS, very understanding of not completing work on time, and is willing to give excused absences/extensions! TAKE HER!
Lecture heavy but not dense. Grades on a heavy curve. Tests are spaced apart nicely. Uses paid (20$) service for pop-questions. Very nice and caring. Gives extra credit. No issues.
I loved her so much. I felt she went at the right pace and made a hard subject pretty clear and easy to understand. I found that the only people that did not do good in the class were the ones who did no outside work or paid any attention at all. Show up to lectures and listen to her and you will do just fine. She is VERY sweet and caring.
Before taking the course I was nervous about the professor by how many bad reviews she receives. BUT she's a great chemistry professor, goes over the PowerPoints and solves problem with you step by step. If you STUDY and put effort in the course you'll get an A! Also go over those practice test and you'll be fine!!! :)
