Dr. Janet is an excellent prof and her lecture is very enjoyable. She makes the class so funny with different activities. She always interacts with the students in order to give the feedback. Her test materials are very detailed sometimes, means you may need to remember the date and so on. The assignment regard to this course is time consuming.
Dr. Prichard was not useful at all. She didn't teach any of the content as it is entirely based on textbook readings and discussion with your group. If you can't memorize every detail of the textbook you won't pass her exam. The group project, she took marks off based on criteria not on the rubric or because of her personal preferences. DO NOT TAKE
Midterms require an understanding of all course content, even fine little details. Questions are very specific and designed to be confusing even to students who attended every lecture, took class notes, and studied the textbook were having difficulty understanding her questions. For a second year class, she expects work at a graduate program level!
Her lectures are very engaging and the content is really interesting, but her midterms and exams are much harder than they need to be. She is not willing to answer questions & chooses to test you on the finest details, including ones that she explicitly stated would not be on the exam. The assignment was also very time consuming and marked tough.
She has greatly improved her teaching ever since coming to Mac. Her slides are fill in the blank which is great to follow along with. Work hard and you will get the mark, despite her MC choice being tricky (none of the above/ more than 2 of the above). She is an engaging lecturer who seems to truly care about her students!
Super nice prof! I found her easy to understand and engaging in lectures. Lecture slides are fill in the blank so it's a good idea to go to class. There was an online "textbook" (not really a textbook, but had short readings relevant to class) that was $40 and had easy multiple choice questions that counted towards participation.
Dr. Pritchard is the best professor I have had at McMaster! She is so clear with what you need to know and really transparent about how you will be graded. Even in class sometimes for lecture, she'll pause a slide and say something like "There will be a question on the test that relates to the calculation here". She is so engaging and knowledgeable
The instructions for the assignment were really long and specific, but it made it really easy to score high because you know exactly what to include. Amazing lecturer and the content was so relevant. Highly recommend.
Dr. Pritchard is so funny and caring. She's also so knowledgable and really clear with what you need to know.
She makes going to class fun because of the flipped classroom style so its not just sitting and listening to someone talk for three hours
Really accessible outside class to give feedback on assignments and marking. She is also so helpful for grad school advice and making senior year really useful.
She's always around after class to clarify instructions or help you with the project. Also, it is important to participate in class as there are grades for this.
Sooo knowledgeable and clear with what you need to know. I took 2N03 with Dr. Pritchard too and its always been a really great experience.
If you study for tests, youll be good. Engaging lectures.
You cant do the assignment last minute so make sure you plan out your time well. Going to lectures was always fun because of the references Dr. Pritchard would make to fad diets.
She would spend each class coming around to each table to speak to people one on one about course content and answer assignment questions. I also liked how the exam was basically just like the coursepack
Such a sweet prof. Really makes an effort to keep class fun. Make sure you read the textbook pages she assigns and the coursepack and youll be fine!!!
Makes lectures at 8:30 engaging and also gives study tips so you do well on the assignment and test!!! Also listens to students and the quizzes are super easy to just make sure youre reading the textbook. Really straightforward
The course really preps you well for anyone interested in health or medicine. The prof is also the nicest at Mac.
If youre in life sci you HAVE to take a course with Dr. Pritchard. Shes a phenomenal person who teaches content thats actually relevant. Really clear weekly schedule and if you follow it, youll do amazing!!!
Every class was basically like a practice session for the exam because we would complete questions together which were exactly like what was on the exam. Lectures were also really engaging and relevant, we talked about anti-vaxxers, biases in studies and more. Dr. Pritchard is the best prof here at Mac.
A prof who actually cares about her students.
Dr Pritchard was an amazing prof! She designed the course in a way that made it interactive and engaging! When studying for the exam it felt like you already knew everything because she did such a great job going over the information in class. She was also very kind and helpful when asked questions! Overall a great experience!
If youre interested in med you should probably take this course because the content is really relevant
Best lectures Ive ever had
I loved how we talked about fad diets and learning how to evaluate nutrition information. I can actually apply this class to real life
Lots of opportunities to boost your mark with the quizzes and assignments. And the lectures were fun.
One of the best profs I've ever had. Amazing teacher, great class, fair exams. Class project was really beneficial for my CV and for research positions.
does not provide you with feedback when you ask. refers you to TA when youre asking HER a question. disappointed.
I love Dr. Pritchard's personality. However, marking for assignments is extremely disorganized. Her TAs do not know what they are doing and there does not seem to be effective communication between the head TA and the professor. In addition, getting proper feedback is extremely difficult.
Dr. Pritchard is an incredible prof. For the first half of the course which she taught, she did an excellent job. Her lectures are very clear and straightforward and the content is super interesting. I personally found the marking of the TAs to be very strict when marking the assignment.
My favourite prof
She starts off ok but she sets you up for failure and does not provide you with the resources required to do well. Her content is also extremely boring and the class is time consuming and stressful. Also not recorded + lecture slides not posted for 8:30 am lectures.
The lectures are mandatory as they are not recorded, incomplete slides, and in class polls on TopHat(need to buy) and are at 8:30am 3 times a week. You will also have to purchase her eBook which is marked. The first test felt as if it was made to trick you and had a lot of obscure details. The assignment was marked poorly with no feedback.
I joined her office hours for help with the exam and she spent 10 minutes just dissing me
The course is straight up designed for those that have their lives together, talm bout waking up at 4AM, meditating for 20 minutes, going on a run, all before 7AM. She doesn't record her lectures, posts slide decks that have like 5 words total, and entire lecture is rambling about graphs she found online. If you fall behind at all, its ggs for u
Dr. Pritchard is a great professor. Both her tests and exams are very fair but sometimes detailed. She is also a great advocate for mental health and wellness. The one assessment of the course can be difficult if you don't follow the rubric, but everyone I know scored above 90. Will lose marks for poor citations!
I wish I never took her course. Holy jesus you would think a Prof forcing you to do group work for 70% of your grade would have better regulations about group work.
She is lovely and her lectures were very interesting. She was very flexible in removing unfair questions from her exams and gave everyone an extra 3% to our assignments when she was told there was a discrepancy between the rubric and outline. I thought she was a fantastic professor, but you have to attend every lecture because she doesn't record.
Unprofessional & passive aggressive. Her expectations for assignments vary greatly from the written rubric. Her TAs are inconsistent. She refused to give any regrades even when formally requested. All the negative reviews from fall 2023 have been taken down for some reason, so take her high ratings with a grain of salt. 350 characters is not enough
All the comments that were posted about how she is a horrible prof (she is) have been taken down. They were honest and truthful about how her teaching style was horrendous and she was just a horrible person in general. Keep that in mind when u see her high score, bc she took down everything else.
Absolutely horrible prof who is just delusional. She took time out of her day to go and report all of the reviews of students who gave her a bad rating because she thinks that she is the best person in the world. By far the worst professor I have encountered at Mac and she should rethink her career choice
She removed old reviews which were extremely truthful to boost her rating. She was incredibly disrespectful and would consistently attack any sort of criticism or feedback. Marking was not consistent among TAs and content was never finished. Assignment expectations and rubrics were completely different, rubrics from 3 years ago were reused.
emotional maturity of a 3 year old
WORST PROF I"VE EVER HAD. V/unhelpful ambiguous advice, TAs didnt know any epi, gaslit the whole class into thinking we were very NOT smart (if no freeby points were given for indv assign class avg wudv been 55%) said WOMP WOMP and wouldnt regrade. Only rsn I 11'd was because I my group was amazing for grp prjct #traumabonded YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Completely unprofessional and degrading of students. I went to her after class to ask questions about her research and express my interest a position, and she proceeded to talk down to me in front of my peers saying "Maybe you should draw out your life's plan with coloured pencils and look to other professors for positions." Avoid her at all costs.
Would not recommend!
This prof thinks she's always right, but that's what losers do and would have appreciated if she knew how to treat students with respect as a human being.
Honestly the least understanding professor I have ever met. When you come to her with a problem she tells you she doesn't want to parent you!!! Like WHAT! Unfortunately this class was mandatory for me but I would not recommend anyone take a class with her.
Very unprofessional and rude to students who need help.
I took this class and did well but it was extremely difficult. It felt like she put every possible obstacle to ruin my ability to do well in her class. I do not recommend her as a prof, kinesiology nutrition may be a better option if possible!
Would not recommend her as a good prof!
Grading criteria and feedback was not clear, very difficult to do well in the course.
Gotta be one of the top 10 worst profs this world has ever seen. I no longer believe in nutrition after taking this abomination of a course. My eating habits gone into a downward spiral because I only eat unhealthy things now. I cried during every test in this class. I hope both sides of her pillow are warm asf.
I hope your organic ketchup is runny. She used to preach about only eating the Mediterranean diet but I caught her eating beef and butter in seed oil every lecture. She did a live hibachi grill in class when she was fixing her deconstructed lunch. She would flaunt her food in our faces and make personal comments.
She is the biggest narcissist on campus. All she does is act passive aggressive to regular questions. She needs a reality check because we are all equal. Just because you teach the class doesn't mean you can demean others and act like you are superior.
She decided to move all the lecture content into a book with printed slides that we had to purchase, with incomplete slides. She wastes so much time in class, redrawing diagrams she already gave. She said she doesn't give practice questions because "it's more valuable to reread all your notes". Avoid at all costs, ruined a course I was excited for.
Very difficult prof. Does not listen to concerns! Would not recommend!
She would not listen to any feedback or try to understand her students' pov. It's really difficult and frustrating when someone significantly older than you doesn't understand and isn't willing to/keep an open mind to their students' struggles.
Would not recommend as a prof!
Not worth taking a course with her. Your GPA will definitely drop. I'm not sure what changed in the last few years but she no longer deserves any 5 star ratings.
Lack of clear grading criteria! I would not take a course with Janet, the other reviews are correct in their statements.
doesn't post class notes, doesn't post practice quizzes or tests, doesn't post test breakdowns, doesn't want students to excel, literally gives you zero class resources to study off of, and overall has the worst class structure i've ever seen in a course. Fair warning, do not take any class Dr. Pritchard teaches.
She literally gives out all the easy practice questions, and put on all lecture details on the test. Also describe the failed students as "not normal". To be honest she should think about what kind of dumb questions she is giving out on a second year course. Definitely would not recommend.
Take the other nutrition course offered at McMaster. Save yourself the trouble, do NOT take any course taught by this professor. She belittles you as a student, uses her "professor" label as a power trick to make you feel inferior. In all interactions I've had with her, she always managed to shame me, even if it's just asking for clarification.
Her assignments make no sense, she posts a rubric, everyone follows it directly, yet somehow the professor tells the TAs to look for something that ISN'T on it. It's genuinely the most terrible experience I've had as a student, and the worst part is she does NOT allow you to regain any marks, despite you following what is ON the rubric. Horrible.
- No lecture slides posted, no recordings, no practice questions given. I got sick for 1 week and have no notes for that entire week and everyone I ask is in the same situation. Even told us not to make up practice questions or use chat to generate questions. WHAT DO I DO THEN? Did horrible on the midterm even tho i studied sm.
This class isn't even difficult but Janet is one of the most useless profs I've ever had. Her TAs give the most useless feedback, half the time I'm wondering if they're even looking at my assignment or if the just gave me the first number they could think of. Janet herself is a whole other story. Told students she “just doesn't have the time 😔”
She is very disorganized. She constantly contradicts herself about assignments, and the TAs mark inconsistently, where it honestly depends on how they're feeling that day. One TA told me to do something, another TA graded it and took marks off. I submitted my first assignment on October 9th, and it is now December 5th with no rubric returned....
This professor might be the worst one I've had so far. I'm currently in second year, so I haven't had interactions like this, however, she is exactly the type of prof you get warned to stay away from. She may deceive you with her sweet tone on the first day (what happened with me), but trust me, never judge a book by its cover. DON'T TAKE
Do not take any course with her. Everything is disorganized, from the structure to the assignments to the TAs and her own instructions. Most students I have spoken to feel the same. She tries to seem caring by saying certain absurd topics will not be on the midterm, but it does not actually help. You will be miserable, avoid at all costs, trust me
I submitted an assignment on October 6th, I have yet to receive a rubric. I asked the professor if she can do anything about this issue after class, she simply told me she has no time to speak to me other than office hours (only 2 hours a week, which usually gets booked up instantly). It's December 5th, and I still don't know why I received a 75%.
Course content is actually very interesting, but the professor ruined the experience for me. I was originally interested in taking the upper year nutrition courses, but this prof fully traumatized me. Also, I wasn't one of them (got a 71%), but if 23% of your class is failing a midterm, the problem is with the prof, not the students.
She needs to stop teaching, it's not for her. She takes things personally and it genuinely frustrates me.
Run away, trust me.
Worst prof I've ever had. Didn't listen to all sides of a group conflict, doesn't let anyone else say a WORD. Nearly went up the ombuds chain because of this course. Do yourself a favour, don't take this course. a 55% group project is not worth your time. She makes it clear you aren't worth her time either. who the hell does 3hr 830s on thursdays??
I'd never take this prof again in a million years. Listen to the ratings and reviews, trust me.
She is a useless prof, if there are any issues with groups, marks, or anything in general to be honest, she shuts you down and speaks to you as if she's running by the clock. It's genuinely so frustrating when epidemiology was one of my favourite topics, but after this course, I'm never thinking of going near this, she traumatized me. Horrible prof
NEVER TAKE HER COURSES, like the other reviews say, NO lecture recordings, NO full posted notes, she told us we can buy a course pack where she said it will have all the slides just for it to be a print of all the student version slides that are incomplete. TESTS ARE BS filled with all the above or two of the above answers that will confuse you
The last day of this class was genuinely the happiest day of my life. Knowing I don't have to see her every Thursday at 8:30am is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Praise the lord!
Listen to the reviews. None are lying, it's concerning. Worst mistake you can make is having her as your prof, I'm genuinely praying for whoever has her next. If 1/5th of your class failed the midterm, there is an issue with the prof, not the students. Especially because the average WITHOUT the failed scores was a 65%. That is unbelievable
I beg anyone thinking of taking this course NOT TO. Dr. Pritchard gives little support, doesn't post full slides or record lectures because she claims ‘writing notes by hand helps consolidate information,' and tests on content we never learned. The exam had short answers she never covered, and Tophat is rushed and confusing.
Don't take a class with her. Avoid at all costs. If you need a Nutrition credit, take the Kin or Health Sci one, or just at another intuition. You will regret if you have a class with her. She will make your life miserable, along with her TAs
It's sad because student voices will never have a true impact regardless, but honestly just stay away from profs like her. Having no practice questions at all, or any recorded lectures (you need to speed write the notes while she's "teaching" (AKA reading off the slides) and you simply won't have time to finish copying or understand it.
Despite a kind professor and interesting content, I would not recommend this course. There were no practice questions for the midterm or exam, the lectures often felt disorganized, nothing was recorded so attendance was required, and there were no extra resources to support our learning.
No recorded lectures, participation mandatory, and thinks practice tests or exams will “give students a false sense of security” so she doesn't provide any resources at all! She does not make the environment feel safe to ask questions, and even berated students who got below a 50 on her midterm because they “don't reflect her teaching”. Avoid her.
First prof in this uni that made me want to violate academic integrity. No practice material or extra resources for the midterm and exam. The content is all over the place. The lecture felt more like her discussing her learning rather than teaching it to us. No explanation on where you lose marks in your assignments. All you get is "awk writing".
She has no heart, genuinely is just an evil human being who abuses her power. I promise you don't take a course with her, you will regret it miserably.
Avoid profs like her, when the last good review about her was in ancient 2020, that's how you know there is a serious issue with her. There is a clear reason her ratings have went so low, she is just a miserable person taking it out on the students. Don't fall for her kind speech first day of class
Do not take this course if you can avoid it. It's poorly run, with no recorded lectures or full slides, no practice tests, and confusing exam questions. Tophat is rushed, support is minimal, and the class causes far more stress than it should, and I genuinely regret taking it.
Such an evil human being. Stay away from her, you're going to regret being in her vicinity. Stay away.
The course itself is not difficult at all, the TAs and the prof are the reason this course sucks. Only Janet Pritchard is capable of making such an easy course to 12, be a miracle to actually achieve that grade.
she is by far THE MOST EVIL human being ive ever had the displeasure of interacting with. TRUST ME when i say, YOU NEED TO IGNORE HER SPEECH ON DAY 1. She tells students to ignore the reviews. dont. i cant believe i fell for that. DROP THE COURSE INSTANTLY if you have her. Take this next semester or later. DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS EVIL. EVIL
You won't find a worst prof, trust the reddit and reviews as they've never been more accurate for someone. The course itself is easy to get a good grade on but she makes it impossible to get anything in the 90s (tells the TAs this) so 12ing it happens once in a blue moon
I saw something about her being "old school" as an excuse.. It's not that at all, when you're just a miserable person showing up to class power tripping your students, not giving them attention/being bothered when asked a question, that's called being a bad prof, not old school. She needs to leave 3G03 alone, ruining an interesting course, sad
Do I agree with reviews, calling her names? no. However, I think her organization is off because your grades aren't posted all in one place, her office hours are inaccessible, she expects detail but does not give you word count to meet all the different sections expected. if u can, save yourself but she is not the worst
I think the reviews are a little overboard. Her organization is very poor and grades are not all in one place, her office hours are inaccessible, and she gives you a list of things she wants in assignments and expects detail but gives you very little word counts which is a little unfair. otherwise she is an okay prof.
She's just not a good prof, there's no other way to put it.
