Professor Shrenk is fantastic; super helpful, and really cares about the students themselves, not just their chem grades. Encourages hard work but gives lots of second chances. Really a great professor, UML is lucky to have her! :)
TERRIBLE professor. Homework assignments are weekly and take 5-6 hours each, but some things in them you do not learn until the day it is due. Weekly quizzes on things that are not covered in class. Her only advice in office hours is to reread the textbook and lecture notes, she does not give any insight or advice. No mercy when it comes to grading
One of the best professors I have had in my time here. Lectures are clear and concise. Attendance is not mandatory, but the weekly quizzes are based almost completely off the lecture material. If you regularly attend class and take notes, you will do well on the quizzes. Overall a very nice, helpful professor that I'd definitely recommend.
this professor is all about waht she is doing. she is really into teaching the material. but this does not make the course any easier you will have to work at it. her lecture notes are very helpful. the only comlaint is that she gives terrible partial credit or none at all which i do not agree with. but good luck
Awful professor. Totally useless when it comes to examples, and speeds through power points in lectures. Homework is difficult and takes a long time to complete. Quizzes are hard and she is a tough grader. Her tests were nearly impossible and just about the whole class failed every one. Would not recommend her to anyone.
This woman is aggravating. I was in the first section she taught at UMASS Lowell and dropped the course after the first week. She forces your to adhere to a time consuming format for homework and emailed us at 7pm the night before class to bring them in the next day (8am class). Argued with her in class and she extended due date. No partial credit.
Overall terrible professor. She put most of the class to sleep during lectures. Her explanations for a lot of theories were vague at best. Blows through slides and assigned homework that you often can do until the night before the due date. Shes extremely smart, she just cant teach.
RUN AWAY! Never take her class. You'll feel like you're in HELL if you take her class. It's a SUPER boring class. She just read through slides really quick and doesn't teach that much. The worst professor I have ever met. 0% in helping students. Her quizzes are so hard and time consuming. She's so crazy about sig.figs. RUN AWAY WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
Definitely a hard teacher. Like any science or math course, expect to put in 4-5 hours a week on homework/text reading and studying to receive a decent mark. Try to make yourself liked by this professor. If she knows/likes you, you will see your quiz scores skyrocket from additional partial credit points she adds. Probably the hardest chem class
she has a really nice personality, and when you need help and go to her office hours she will definitely help. she wants what is best for the students, but plan on putting in A LOT of work. homework takes a while, but make sure you actually understand it.. don't google it.
Very Hard teacher, TONS of homework, that takes up a lot of time. Its almost like she thinks that her class is the only class we are taking that semester! Avoid her at all cost.
the worst professor i have ever had. she goes through the material to quickly and doesnt take enough time to teach you any of the material during class. the homework is hard and time consuming. i would recommend you think twice before taking her class.
Dr. Schrenk is a great person, not such a great professor. She knows her stuff but is poor at explaining them. Manages class time poorly and will keep you till minutes past. Her quizzes are very hard. Lots of homework but if you look over all the hw problems before a quiz it will help. She is very glad to help you out outside of class, however.
Not a great professor, but at least she is a nice person! Her quizzes were kind of hard in that she expected a certain method in solving longer problems. Sometimes, this method just did not make any sense whatsoever. Her class was boring as heck too! I would go for another Chem professor if possible.
Loves her job so much that she go over the class time and tends to lecture slower even though time has run out. Purposely has clicker questions at the near end of class so you can't pack up. A weekly quiz is given on topics you will learn about the following week. So interested in her students that she eavesdrops on your conversation.
I took this prof for chem 1 she was a nightmare. She is very smart and taught well in class. Her weekly thursday quizes are awful, way harder than any of the other teachers. Try to avoid her at all costs.
It is my first chemistry class. I choose her. She is a bad. I am going to drop her from my class scedual. She makes up chemistry problem. All the toughest are in the tests. In the class, she keeps reading some reducleous headlines from the slides. God luck in your quizzes and test.
Absolutely awful teacher. Goes on and on about her children's lives and then quizzes you on things she never taught you. I honestly do not know how she is still a teacher at this University. Do not take her, I really regret not taking AP Chemistry with my high school teacher who knew what she was doing, and was actually interested in helping me.
Prof. Schrenk definitely is a tough professor, but she knows her stuff and makes sure you learn it. If you're going to continue taking chemistry classes, you'll thank her. I had a medical issue halfway through the semester and she was great about it. DEFINITELY read the chapter always and watch YouTube videos if you're not getting something.
Get out while you can. This class made me literally cry this semester. I've studied for days and gone to tutoring every day for a week straight and still managed to fail quizzes that I walked in confident about. She is so unclear and confusing. If you take this class, prepare extra time to teach yourself because she surely won't.
Literally the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She can't explain anything she tries to teach in a lecture, not to mention she is one of those teachers who blows through the slides really fast and doesn't even put them on the class website. To top it all of when ever a student asks a question, she can not answer it. Like she doesn't know it.
A lot of people say she's tough. But to be honest if you take the time to read the chapter before the quiz and use her lecture summaries to study, you will do fine. The material comes out of the book and her lecture notes.
Awful teacher. She does slides really fast, but then doesn't send you them and gets mad if you ask for more time. If you ask her a question she cannot answer it and almost gets mad at you for asking. Her tests are on things she rarely goes over and she takes off points for everything. DO NOT TAKE. She couldnt teach even if her life depended on it.
Although she is hated by most students, I did not think she was the worst. If you take the time to study for the quizzes and do the homework, you will do well and learn the material. She explains weird concepts fairly well and she will help if you ask. However, if you want an easy Chemistry teacher, I would suggest switching out.
Homework is always 3+ hours, Tests are very hard, be prepared to study! Meh overall...
She is not an easy A by any means. Her quizzes are hard and her lectures are just notes from a projector and then some she will do on the board. Ask her questions though, she will help when you ask in class. Don't skip because chemistry is hard.
I had Schrenk for Chem II because I had no choice. I expected her to be worse as a teacher, but if you go to class and pay really close attention she explains what you need to know for the final. Her quizzes and homework are really difficult compared to what she does in class so make sure you study the textbook a lot, it saved my grade.
Schrenk is probably the most student-divisive professor at the university; many like her, many more despise her class. Both sides have fairly valid reasons; while she is easily the hardest Chem I&II grader and is brutal on quizzes, while also keeping you late, the grading criteria is crystal clear and she teaches useful concepts. Effort a must!
She is absolute garbage. She is awful at teaching and we usually get behind in class . Don't ever take her class.
I read the reviews before taking the class, and I was honestly expecting the worst, but Dr. Schrenk actually taught me a lot. She's an extremely tough grader but she offered extra credit sometimes. If you put in the work, it'll make you a better chemistry student and better prepared for Chemistry II. Frustrated the hell out of me sometimes though.
She is definitely one of the hardest teachers though. But if you see her for tutoring she actually helps you out a lot. She also looks like a cat lady and shes very sweet. (shes not actually a cat lady bc she has a husband and kids but you know). Gotta love her
She is not good at teaching the material. Class is too awkward to ask because she yells "We should know this!" and doesn't go over it. The tutoring center she tells you to go to is two seniors who don't want to talk to you. Long hard online homework every Tuesday on material she hasn't taught you yet. Gross quiz every week with trick questions.
Janet is a really nice person outside of class, but in class she's not that helpful. Her quizzes are really hard so make sure you study super hard. idk man she's just an awful teacher 10/10 would not recommend.
It's hard to give Janet Schrenk this low of a rating because she is such a nice person. However, her class is extremely difficult and her quizzes do not correlate whatsoever with the homeworks. If you miss a class you'll fall so far behind. Honestly, if you get her try to switch out lmao.
I had Karpeles but there were a few times where he had an emergency to handle and Schrenk would substitute in for us. Compared to Karpeles, she is a wonderful teacher. The material is always hard, but if you come down to having to pick between the 2 of Schrenk and Karpeles, definitely take Schrenk. She takes it slower and encourages questions.
She gave alot of notes that were pretty useless for the quizzes. Her quizzes were extremely hard and never worked a single problem out to prepare with a few exceptions. The homework was so hard took around 3 hours on average, she never explained the homework at all. Although she was very nice and cared about what she did
Way to specific when grading, it is very unfair. She is not understanding of students and treats students as if we already know the material. Lots of homework outside of MasteringChemistry, she is the only chem2 teacher that gave outside assignments. Attending class matters. Quizzes tend to be extremely different from her examples and homework.
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I was a chem major and she is such a terrible teacher I had to change my major to something else. she is absolutely awful when it comes to teaching she will not help at all. I've only passed 1 of the 12 quizzes. if you want to learn you have to teach yourself. she's boring and the classes drag. save urself
if I could give her negative starts I would. she's terrible at teaching. walked away knowing nothing but the fact her husband lives in Africa. wow. don't take her flat out. you will most likely fail or pass with a low grade.
Shes just not great at explaining during her lectures and there is a ton of work.
She is the worst teacher i have ever had. Grades quizzes like she wants you to fail and cant teach. if you cant switch out of her class just wait, and take it the next semester.
PLEASE don't take her class. I had her for both Chemistry 1 and Chemistry 2, and overall she's a harsh grader, and doesn't seem to explain things well enough in class. Even if you feel like you know the material for her quizzes, you'll most likely get way worse than you expect. She's extremely specific when it comes to them.
Its difficult to give Prof. Schrenk such a horrible score due to how caring and sweet she is as a person. She was always available for questions and extra help but her difficulty of quizzes, homework, etc. will just lower your self esteem. I have for every quiz studied my hardest and put forth my best effort, and walked out with a sold D.
DO NOT DO NOT take schrenck's class. She will make you hate your life she gives way too much homework two 5 hour long every week on top of online homework there is written homework Schrenck is known to be one of the biggest weed out professors at UML. She will crush your hopes and dreams and on top of that make you feel stupid. Don't take her class
Starts "teaching" at 9:15 and the class ends at 9:15. She has something due every class though we haven't learned anything new, then expects to do very complicated examples for hw. We got a hw back and she said "You guys should have told me I haven't taught the subject at all yet". Well if she read the hw problems she would know. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Janet Schrenk is the worst instructor I have ever had in my life: rude and condescending, does not teach; simply displays a power point and flies through it with no explanations, assigns homework on topics we have never discussed, grades tests ridiculously/unfairly, always ends class late, simply does not care if we learn the material or not.
This is honestly the worst class I have ever taken. Professor Schrenk is nice I guess, but she can not teach. I have yet to learn a single thing in this class.
Expects students to be as advanced as her in chemistry. barely gives students a chance to understand the material. gives WAY too many homework assignments, weekly quizzes can be up to SIX PAGES. have other classes to take care of? too bad. you need to be an expert in chemistry to take this course with her.
AWFULThe worst professor I have had Gives WAY TOO MUCH HOMEWORK 100+ homework questions a week Homework is CONSTANTLY due. Doesn't care if you don't get the material. Is extremely boring 80% of students end up withdrawing. Does not care about you having other classes. Thinks everything is fine and dandy. You will regret taking her. 6 page "quizzes"
She gives a lot of homework. She is a tough grader yet her teaching methods are terrible. Don't take her.
I would not recommend taking her. I did not learn anything unless I taught myself and the lectures were very hard to sit through. In chem 1 I got As on most quizzes and worked less, here I get Bs and try a lot harder. Her quizzes are like 6 pages and you don't go over any problems for them. We have 100+ MC and 1-3 written problems every week.
The worst professor I have ever had. Doesnt try to explain topics that arent understood, instead makes them more confusing. Quizzes are worth 50% of your grade and they are more difficult than anything you learn in class. Takes points off for absolutely anything. Expect several hours of homework every week. If you can avoid taking this class!
So hard, do not take her class. Her quizzes are way harder than what you learn in class and you get points off if you don't write out you checking your answer on the quizzes. So much HW, stuff we haven't learned yet most of the times. I get all As and in this class I'm def gonna get a B at best. She's nice but not understanding/helpful in anyway.
Incredibly hard, lecture heavy. She comes off impossible, but if you put in the work and are serious about chem, she'll go above and beyond to help you even if it's not her job. She's always willing to help. This was a very content/hw heavy class, the most difficult I've taken but from her teaching style I'm confident to move onto harder classes.
Took her class for half a semester, ended up changing my major and withdrawing. My major wasn't even chemistry. Don't do it to yourself. Had a tutor who didn't even understand why she taught the way she did.
Janet is literally the worst teacher. Very nice lady, but gives out a lot of hw. She goes way into depth about unneccessary material and is almost impossible to ask her a question. You can ask her a question and you'll end up even more confused. Do me a solid and pick someone else. I got the worst luck with her...
Do not take any classes from this professor. I had medical issues during the semester and she did not bother to help me in any way. I showed up to her office hours and let her know in advance and she told me she wasnt there cause she was getting a coffee... She also talks about irrelevant topics in her class that is not helpful in anyway.
If you get to know her outside of class she's a kind, caring person. That's why it's so confusing that she puts no effort into teaching during class. We would show up to class and she would give us a problem to work on without showing us how to do it, and expect us to figure it out and teach each other in a group. You won't learn anything from her.
Save yourself the trouble and take the class at another uni. She assigns a boat load of homework and doesn't explain major topics well. She often asks for questions, but at that point the whole class is lost. Also, her exams are incredibly hard and no extra credit is given
Going to class and participating in the problem that is solved by the group is part of your grade, so do not miss any classes. Her quizzes were so difficult for no reason at all. She took points off for the smallest things and things that should not have points deducted for. Personally, I didn't like her and won't be taking her again.
Nothing resembles what she gives on the exams.
Worst professor I've ever taken. Truly deserves a 0/5, harder exams than quizzes, and you will have at least 5 different things due at different times throughout the day, and every day. I had a family emergency in the middle of the semester, and she didn't care. Went to office hours and told me to study a list of 150 compound 6 times a day.
Do not take this Professor, We were in an in person class and she was still zooming in to the smart board which was awful and instead of cutting us slack when we needed it, she would make things harder than necessary. ALL of the quizzes were super long and supposed to be completed in 50 minutes.
She is really nice, has a tough shell but overall very kind person. The issue is her class, she runs it as if chem is your only class with a workload that would only be manageable by constantly overworking yourself. Expect to not do well on quizzes unless you devote at least 5-6 hours to studying. If you are stuck with her, good luck and study hard
Does not teach much of the material, expects you to figure out how to do problems on the HW on your own. Tests every week.
Terrible. Expect to have ATLEAST 3-4 things due each week. "Teaches" the material as if you are a master in chemistry. Quizzes are almost all 5 pages long, and maybe 1 of the 10 questions on them reflect the lecture notes she gives. Also expect to be kept in class 5-10 minutes late every day. Don't take her class if you want to pass.
Quizzes don't reflect the lectures, homework, or OpenStax textbook. She's a little nitpicky with grading, but does tell you her standards ahead of time, so it's up to you to remember them. She's not the most accessible but is nice and interesting as a person, but lacks awareness of the level her students are at and the course is brutal.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! If you find yourself in her class, and you can drop it and wait another semester to get a better professor, do that instead. She doesn't tell you any of the important stuff and just expects you to know things. She assigns these massive assignments on blackboard and makes no announcement about them. STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!!!
Notoriously the worst chem prof at uml. Doesn't cover quiz material during lectures, so either you teach yourself the material and memorize the formulas or fail. Had Covid and didn't let me make up a quiz. A lot of homework, all on different platforms. Offers no extra credit or makeups even though the course is hard.
Was a straight A student until I took her class. She refuses to have any review days or take any time at all to review any material that people have questions on and says to come for office hours if clarification on topics are needed. If you are unable to go to office hours you're basically screwed.
Amazing teacher, totally changed my approach to learning. Very helpful to go to her office hours with questions or just to chat. Quizzes def push you to think beyond the hw/lectures, but have made me a better student bc i have to prepare for questions that make me think conceptually. Half of your grade is also homework! She gets a bad rap, love her
I am honestly not sure why she became a professor. Homework that sometimes takes days at a time. Extremely rude and does not care about students wellbeing. Will actively work against the student. Unfortunately not exaggerating. You are better off not taking the class.
Take this class with ANYONE ELSE. Decided to take her for Chem 2 last spring after doing well in her Chem 1 class. One of the WORST decisions I've ever made! She was on Zoom for most of the semester, but we still had to show up in person in order to get attendance credit. Quizzes were NOTHING like the homework/lectures. She's rude and inaccessible.
The class workload was overwhelming, with tight deadlines and unclear expectations. Many students, myself included, found it challenging to balance the demands. Unfortunately, the collective sentiment echoes dissatisfaction, as the excessive workload overshadowed any potential enthusiasm for the subject matter.
the quizzes are nothing like the work or review not worth the effort to take her class don't do it
If you take this class please have a friend accompanying you because the amount of boredom and stress this class will bring you is palpable. Insanely tough grader, if you don't have the exact correct answers, don't expect full credit, or any credit for that matter.
To everyone that thinks it's her fault they failed the class: take some accountability :) all the material on the quizzes is in the lecture summaries and homeworks. If you end up taking her: be prepared to study in a way you have never before. You will not pass if you just show up to class/do homework. Quizzes are fair but you have to work hard.
Read all the reviews gave her the benefit of the doubt & chose her but I was wrong LISTEN to the reviews!! I had told her about my condition yet when I was sick & missed a test she didn't let me take it automatic 0. Her hw is due early mornings & only gives a day extension for late work. You get no credit if answers aren't exactly how she wants it.
She speeds through this course so good luck!
No other class comes close to the level of difficulty in this one. She expects students to treat her pre-req class as a full time job and is VERY inaccessible.
Workload is insane, no other chem classes are writing essays, only this class. She does too much and makes everything way more complicated than it needs to be.
This was the worst class I've taken thus far in college. Lectures are often dense and confusing, homework is even worse. Nothing connects either, the exams had material nothing like the homework, the homework looked nothing like the lectures, etc. take this class with ANYONE else. She has no care for students and holds class longer than it should.
Prof Schrenk assigns a lot of homework and her tests are difficult. On top of that, she is not a great teacher. I'd advise that you take Professor Kim Shih for Chem 1. The only positive thing I have to say about her is that she provided extra office hours leading up to finals to help everyone review. Besides that, she is not a great teacher.
A big part of the class is made up of her reading off slides. Not much interaction with the students, so not very engaging.
I've never seen an entire class average below a 30 on a quiz like I did here. to me that's insane. if a majority of students taking the course with her are struggling, i'm sure we aren't the problem.
For the LOVE OF GOD, make sure you study if you really really want to put yourself through this awful class. She makes ZERO time to actually help you out, and if you ask, she barely explains it. Only way to pass is if you come everyday, and make a study group. Do that trust
She is a good Person should meet well, but she's not a good teacher.
She's nice, but not very good at teaching. She only reads off slides and isn't very helpful if you ask questions. She doesn't teach in a way that is easy to understand the material and makes things sound over complicated. Quizzes and tests are unrelated to the homework and isn't very helpful to study.
She makes me want to cry every day and I think she gets enjoyment out seeing her students suffer. If you have her switch out of her class or drop it. It is not worth it. Her class average on the quizzes was a 30 out of 100% she does not scale. So be ready you will see more than half of your class fail or drop out of her class.
Background experience in chemistry is almost a necessity. Hardly accessible after class and difficult tests.
Overall, she isn't a good professor. She wants to see you fail and explains chemistry in a very confusing way and expecting us to know organic chemistry in a chemistry 1 class. Her tests are not related at all with the topics learned, not recommended to take her.
If you took AP chem in hs you will probably be fine, and if you didn't... be prepared to make this class your whole life and dedicate all your time to it. If you miss even one class, you are cooked. However, it isn't the end of the world if you do have this teacher you just need to be dialed in and going to tutoring and review whenever possible.
Please, please do everything you can to not take a course with this professor. Unless you are an expert in chemistry, please know that you will be teaching yourself everything. Even if you study, you will probably do really bad on the quizzes.
