She is a wonderful teacher, she helps you out a lot.
as long as you go to class and work you will get a good grade. she is very fair and is a lot of fun. she is a very nice teacher!
Dr. Shaw is extremely nice, but has her moments sometimes. She helps her students as much as she can. I would recommend everyone take her CHEM 1211 class.
Dr. Shaw was an amazing teacher. She has a great since of humor, which helps in a class like Chemistry. She is always willing to help out (as long as your not waiting until the very last minute to ask for help). I would definately recommend her class!!!
dr. shaw is a wonderful teacher. she is very inspiring and makes chemisrty fun. she gives bonus points and reviewsheets for the tests which are easy if you study. definately take her class if you get the chance
Dr. Shaw was a wonderful prof. she always went above and beyond to make sure we understood the material.
dr shaw is an amazing teacher. her lectures are powerpoints, and everything is extremely clear. she is always willing to help yall, and is really nice and sorta funny.
SHE IS A NICE LADY BUT........ SHE MOVES VERY QUICKLY MATERIAL AND EXPECTS YOU TO DO ATLEAST 9 HOURS OF CHEM HOMEWORK OUT OF CLASS AND SHES NOT JOKING. DO NOT DO AS I DID AND READ THESE REVIEWS AND THINK IT WAS AN EASY A. YOU HAVE TO WORK YOUR ASS OFF TO DO WELL BUT YOU COME OUT ALL KNOWING.
This class was easy! She gave amazing practice test and went over them the class before each exam. The test was always very similar! Great help if you went to office. I wish she could teach organic! The curved the final and gave extra credit questions on each exam and bonus points for comming to review day in class. TAKE HER!
She is a very good teacher. She speaks clearly and ethusiastically. (?spell) She is very heplful and explains things clearly
No matter what, Chemistry is not going to be easy! But Professor Shaw is definitely one of the best. She explains things well and even acknowlegdes that the book can sometimes be confusing. Her test are OK, but you definitely HAVE to study and do homework. The only drawback is that there is really no time alotted to go over homework in class.
I had her for chem lecture and lab and she is the BEST teacher in the entire chemistry department! the subject is obviously not easy but her tests and quizzes come straight from the powerpoint and the textbook so do study both!!! DO THE HOMEWORK!!! she always puts HW prob on the test! she's the nicest and most sweetest lady there so take her!!!
VERY good teacher. If your lucky enough to get her. you'll love her. keep in mind Chemistry is hard no matter what. Your gonna study, Your gonna do homework. And your gonna show up to class. Otherwise you fail. She gives you lots of quizzes that help your grade alot, but her tests are pretty difficult.
Dr shaw is a good teacher, but test are still hard, although the quizes are easy, and will help your grade alot. over all hard class, but she is good.
Knows her chemsitry and expects you to know the same.If you haven't taken chemistry for a while, review before you start the class! Personally not for me, she was harsh and sarcastic a lot of the time and made it difficult to confront her to ask her questions.I'm getting someone else next time. Don't take if you're not auditory, she flies thru stuf
Dr. Shaw definitely kn0ows what she is talking about but her tests are super hard! If you take good notes and do the homework everynight then you should be in good shape. Even though she doesn't collect the hw it will definitely help on tests. she gives pop quizzes during class so attendance is a must!
Dr. Shaw is a great Chemistry professor. Her tests are fair. If you do not have time to devote 9hr/wk to studying for this class & you aren't great in chemistry then don't take the class. You will learn but you need to committ to being in class, reading your chapters prior to class and to studying. She presents the material so you can understand!
I had Dr. Shaw for Chem1211Lab. She's a GREAT teacher for lab. She will help you with ANY and EVERY question you might have. I wish I could have her for CHEM1212Lab.
She is a great teacher. Sometimes material will be covered fast in class, so it helps to go home and read the textbook. Overall she is pretty tough, but no ridiculous.
I had her for lab and she was GREAT! i loved her and she walked around the whole time trying to help you understand better and was really amazing teacher! TAKE HER!!!
Amazing teacher. Very clear and extremely helpful. She has a sense of humor which makes the class much more fun. She gives you practice exams the class before an exam and lets you work on it in groups and she takes the exams straight from them. No homework unless you need help. I learned so much from her. I would definitely recommend her!
Dr. Shaw is the best Chemistry professor at KSU and that's not an opinion. If you need to understand the concepts, just ask her and she will make it clear. Grades fairly and gives you plenty of chances help your own grade. Chemistry is never an easy course, but she's as good as it gets. Study on your own time and you'll get a B or an A.
Dr. Shaw always did a quick pre-lab before we started actually doing the lab. She would tell you what to watch out for and she would walk around to make sure everyone was ok and sometimes checked our work to make sure the calculations looked correct. She was always willing to help and is a great professor but grades strictly sometimes.
Very kind woman. She is helpful when you need it, but moves at a very fast pase. If you get behind, there may be no coming back.
Dr. Shaw was my favorite teacher this semester. She explained all the concepts clearly until we all understood them. The friday peer leading was really helpful too. The only downfall to her is that she moves wicked fast. If you fall behind you have to work really hard to catch up again. But I'd recommend her to anyone who has to take chem
Dr.Shaw is the best chem. teacher. chemistry is already hard, so its important to study and practice on your own time as well. Shaw will go over something until the class understands. she can be a bit rude sometimes, but its funny and keeps you awake. if u have to take chemistry 1211, take shaw!
I love Dr. Shaw. She is one of the better Chemistry professors. She is very approachable and kind. I will always be grateful to her for giving me a chance! If you ever have the chance to take her, you should!
She was awesome. wanted to know that we knew the material. One of the best professors i have ever had.
I loved Dr. Shaw!! I am sad that she won't be teaching the next level of general Chemistry. If you go to class, you get free grades. There is plenty of extra credit and her tests are from the notes. The class is a lecture.
Good professor. Chemistry is always somewhat difficult but she is a good teacher that is always willing to help. And cracks the occasional joke to keep the class interested and upbeat
i was not good at chemistry in high school , but Dr.Shaw made everything clear. Her test are easy bc its always multiple choice.
I can not say enough good things about Dr Shaw!! She is the BEST! Take her class if you know what's good for you....
I went into this class knowing nothing about chemistry and came out knowing A LOT. Dr. Shaw will not easily give you a good grade, but she'll do everything she can so that you can learn to do so. She is great at breaking down hard material and she keeps it pretty entertaining. She's super-helpful and fair, but just be ready to work really hard!
I had professor Shaw for Lab class. She is very helpful and isn't intimidating to approach. In lab, people usually have a lot of questions so she tends to run around the class, but she'll always make sure she gets to you. She has a good sense of humor and isn't boring. Very knowledgeable, and can be a lot of help if you don't understand lecture.
Nice class
Awesome teacher. If you can take Shaw's class do it. She explains the material brilliantly. She's funny and makes the lectures very engaging. Not to 'diss' KSU, but I can't believe we have professors this good here. If you struggle in this class then you shouldn't go into science b/c the material can't be taught any better.
Shaw is one of the best professors I've had a KSU. She has a nice sense of humor that lightens the mood of the class. Explains things thoroughly. Very helpful. Exams are somewhat difficult, but if you do the homework and the practice exams you will pass. [20% of grade from hw/quizzes, 20% from ACS final, 60% from 4 exams(lowest one dropped)]
Great Professor! Very tough though, would recommend her! Be ready to earn your grade.
Her test were hard. I studied. Anytime anyone ask a question she basically pointed to the slide and said "there's your answer" without re-explainging it.
Great Teacher! She keeps the mood really light in class and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions. She will help you in her office if you need help. It's a tough class, but I couldn't have asked for a better professor.
She's a nice teacher, but she does rush alot in class. especially if you're in one of her 50 min classes. She refers alot to her powepoints and gives like a 10 prob. hw assig. every other week. her exams are pretty tough! and there is chem. tutoring available in her office. but she does say "for sake of class time, u can do this @ home" ALOT!!
Okay, so chemistry is going to be difficult no matter what professor you have, but I truly think she is the best at helping students understand. She teaches from power points and posts all slides online, gives a HW sheet for every chapter. 4 exams and she gives you a practice exam for each one which helps, A LOT. I barely used the book. Take her!
Chemistry is going to be hard no matter what professor you have. I loved professor Shaw and would definitely recommend her! I'm in her 50 min MWF class and the Friday class is peer leading which really helps. Shaw keeps a light mood in the class and is pretty funny.
Idk wth these other people are talking about. This proffessor is the worse the test are extermely hard. I mean you have to studt in almost every class in college and anything worth having is worth working hard for. This lady on the other hand it's almost like she wants you to fail. For someone who doesn't know everything there is to kow about Chemi
I was ill and in the hospital and she would not let me make up my exam or any homework missed. She is the worse. If you want to fail hands down take her.The test are hard enough. Our class average on the 2nd test was an F she was ok with that.
The class is hard no matter what prof you get. She is nice and funny. She gives notes straight from the book so you need to ask questions if you don't understand. Try not to buy the book it's expensive rent it. Go to class every day if you're not strong in Chemistry.
SHE goes through the material really quickly and the material is extremely difficult so I would not recommend her. She is a nice lady but her teaching is fast pace. If you are not good in chemistry do NOT take her take someone else that will take the time to clearly explain the material
Dr. Shaw is a wonderful professor. She's very clear in lecture, and her exams are true to what she teaches. Pay attention during lecture and you'll have a strong idea what type of questions she'll have on her exams. Her class will prepare you for the ACS final. Great professor, would love to have her again.
Awesome! One of the best teachers I have ever had. Teaches the material extremely well, not boring. What she teaches is on the test, gives tons of practice as well (practice tests and homework (hw is graded)). Very possible to make an A if you study. Would take her again. Loved the class!
She loves what she does, and it comes across in her class. The class is naturally difficult and requires a good bit of outside reading, studying, and homework, but she makes it as straight forward as she can (except a few tricky questions on her exams). I'd highly recommend her, but be prepared to work hard and fast.
Best chemistry teacher you will ever find.
I really liked Dr. Shaw for Chem 1211 but I absolutely loved her for Chem 1212. She comes prepared for class and goes out of her way so that her students learn the material. She loves her students and pulls for anyone that puts forth an effort. Not to mention, she can break chemistry down for ANYONE to understand. She's the best.I will miss her!!!!
Dr. Shaw is a SUPERB teacher. I would highly recommend her for anyone. She explains things very well and her tests are fair. Show up to class do the suggested problems and you'll do just fine. Excellent teacher all around.
Dr. Shaw is an amazing professor! Her lectures are not boring. She will help you in any way that she can. She explains her information clear. Tests come straight from power points and lectures. You do NOT have to read the book, but it helps to get problems out of it. Gives lots of easy HW. Tests are multiple choice. Drops lowest one! TAKE HER!
Awesome teacher in explaining and teaching chemistry, Tests are hard. but if you know the material, attend lecture and do hw youll be fine.
Shaw is a really good prof. The lectures are all online and attendance is only mandatory for the friday classes, when we have peer leading sessions. She is really willing to help her students in any way she can. She moves a little fast & she explains things the long way. I'm more of a short-cut kind of learner. Easy course if you do worksheets!
Dr. Shaw is BEYOND the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had. She drops the lowest test which def. helps. It's not hard to get an A. Just do your homework (same layout as test), and come to class and you will be fine. She comes off as if she unapproachable but she is willing to help whenever for whatever. Great prof. TAKE HER !!!
Had her for lab she is really helpful but she takes a lot of points off for sig figs. Overall she is a great prof. who knows what she is doing. TAKE HER
She is nice and she is more then happy to help and answer questions. You will need to do the practice problems at the beginning of every chapter that she gives, though it not mandatory. DO NOT MISS MORE THEN 3 FRIDAYS IF YOU HAVE HER MON/WED/FRI CLASS... SHE WILL TAKE POINTS OFF! otherwise i definitely would take her class.
Fabulous teacher in every way, but only if you want to be there. If you don't put in much effort, she can be really harsh, which is simply a reflection of life itself. If you review her presentations and carefully complete the HWs then you can do well!!
She is very nice and helpful. She will look over your lab and tell you what is right or wrong. If you go to her she will help explain questions about lecture. Also she is a very hard grader!! She counts off for a lot. So make sure you double check your work and have her check it. I slacked off and didn't use her help and got a B+. Take her!
EXCELLENT professor! VERY good at teaching (clear & to the point). Very easy to get all the points for homework and peer leading sessions. There is a practice test with an answer key for every exam which look just like the real tests. I went to every class, and I got an A.
She makes getting the 200 homework points really easy. She is interesting and teaches very well. She posts her work for everything you do so gives you lots of oppurtunities to practice for her tests. Do the practice exams and know your homeworks very well and you should do fine in her class. I really enjoyed taking her class.
I took this class freshman and sophomore year and im just now writing a review bc i didnt like the previous ones, TAKE DR. SHAW. She makes it impossible to fail! and she is really helpful. I got a C in 1211 cause i didnt try AT ALL but when i took 1212 i got an A and even a 107 on one test cause i applied myself, best professor ever!
I really love Dr. Shaw. She is very good at explaining things and very helpful. She has office hours for which you can go and get help. GREAT Professor! I highly recommend her. I wish she taught 1212 because I would without a doubt take her again if I could.
Dr. Shaw is an excellent teacher. She gives plenty of examples in class and is willing to answer questions. Homework is very helpful, so do all of them even though you do not need to. Tests are sort of hard, but if you study you should be fine. I loved her class even though I hate chem.
Dr. Shaw is an awesome teacher! Gives plenty of examples in class and the homework is very helpful! I would definitely recommend her.
Very passionate about chemistry. She can be sarcastic, which makes it hard to approach her, but she's knowledgeable and willing to help. The biggest thing is to prepare well for her tests; you need to memorize your formulas and atomic rules, she uses these as a big part of her tests.
Extra credit on every test. All quizzes are guaranteed extra credit. Homework is very helpful. She has a great sense of humor which allows for a fun class- would definitely recommend!
Hands down best chemistry professor to take. She knows her stuff. At first she might seem difficult to approach but show her that you are truly interested in understanding and she will do her best to make you understand. You will have to do work...
One of the best professors I've had at Kennesaw. If you've been struggling with Chemistry at all, this is the class for you. Really knows her stuff and is Extremely helpful!
At the start of the semester she came across as very strict and almost mean. Over the semester she grew on me and I realized that that is just how she is. She is extremely fair and is a great professor. It is a hard class and will require a lot of studying but it is worth taking with her. She's willing to help if asked and wants to see you succeed.
Dr. Shaw is a fantastic professor. She teaches clearly and effectively. She's always willing to help. She's also very personable and will just talk to you while you're waiting for class to start. She gave us three surprise, in-class assignments for bonus points on test grades. I've really enjoyed learning from her, and I highly recommend her
Best professor alive. If you want an easy A, don't take her. But if you care about the class, you will love it. She makes you earn your curve for the final by giving extra credit quizzes. Get on her good side; she is so sweet, beyond helpful, and extremely smart. She sacrifices so much time for her students. Oh, and she posts test grades 30m after.
Shes a good teacher, always asks if you has questions. Her test are pretty straightforward. She will tell you how many questions from each chapter and how many math from each chapter and gives you an old exam as practice. The really only hard part is that each test is 200 points and only like 20 questions. So if you miss two, you already have an 80
I don't say this lightly when I say DO NOT take Shaw. I worked hard and still failed. She is disrespectful to students and humiliates them in class if you ask a question. She wasn't clear at all with the homework grading and most of us failed that portion as well. Tests are 15-20 questions and tough. Study your ass off.
Very hard teacher. Gives 4 tests and 1 ACS final. 20% is homework which is online. Tests are hard to pass and she is very rude. AVOID!!!!
Class is difficult even if you study your ass off. Shaw fails to help students one on one and is beyond difficult when it comes to exams. The homework is impossible as well and she is just rude and does not show effort to help students who struggle or students who want to do better. I DO NOT RECOMMEND EVER
I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER TO ANY ONE!! Shaw makes the students feel as though they know the class material and then slams an exam that the majority fail. She does not help students and is rude to most students who ask questions in class. even if you study you are still screwed for this class. if you're not a chemistry master don't take this class ever
Dr. Shaw is amazing. She is passionate about chemistry, good at breaking down complex concepts, and there for you if you try, and approach her. She may seem unapproachable, but she really wants you to succeed, and understand the beauty of chemistry. Take her!
Dr. Shaw is by far my favorite chemistry professor at KSU. She is direct, kind, and clear. She makes you work for it, but only for your benefit. She wants you to really understand the material. Go to her office hours with SPECIFIC questions! She will help you.
DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL! Worst Professor Ever! She is very rude, doesn't answer questions and assumes you know the material before she teaches it. She also instead of testing you upfront on the material, she will try to trick you as if you are a Chem Major that knows all the ins and outs. The lectures don't really help and you loss pts if absent.
Dr. Shaw is direct, not rude. These negative reviews from 1211/12 don't do her justice. She expects effort, if you care, then she cares. But if you spend 5 hours to study for a test, you will fail, and she won't hold your hand. Everything on her test is on her powerpoint or lecture. She's the best @ KSU, just work hard and it's absolutely doable.
She really wants her students to learn and pass. Show up, do the homework. She's very patient and will answer your questions. Quizzes pop up, but can only help your grade, no matter how well you do on them. Attendance is not technically mandatory but highly recommended. If you want an A and to know the material, I'd highly recommend Dr. Shaw.
If you study and participate in class you will be fine. By no means is this class easy but she is always available for help. Homework is online and you can google the answer. Test are my only issue, they are about 20-25 questions long so if you miss one your grade lowers a lot, but if you study and work through all the problems you can get an A.
I see how people might think she's rude but I think it is all in good fun and pretty hilarious. Dry humor. She's a very good professor but the class is difficult. You don't really need the text book if you go to the lectures.
Best chem teacher at Kennesaw. Of course chemistry is difficult. She curves and helps students do well. She's the only professor to take for chemistry for sure. m
Dr. Shaw is a great professor. She breaks down the complexities of fundamental chemistry to a solid concept. Do the homework and read the book.
She really wantss you to do well. Great professor who will curve and help you make a good grade. Take her for sure.
She gives quizzes for bonus on the final. All tests and quizzes are multiple choice and she gives a huge buffer for the homework (Only need 200 points for a 100% and they are about 330 available) and you can get a 210 points out of 200 on tests. You get 5 grades each worth 200 points each. HW, 4 tests, and a final, and you drop the lowest test.
I even hate her voice. She cannot teach , topics are hard even I used to love chemistry, I hate it now because of this professor. She acts like you should already know what she is talking about mostly time.
This is the second time I have taken her so I really like this professor. She is very funny but you need to understand her sense of humor and not take things so personally or be too sensitive. She does a great job of teaching the course, I did not need a textbook for 1211 or 1212. SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Great professor. There is a medium amount of homework, but the homework is exactly like the tests.
Awesome professor. Attendance not mandatory but frequently gives extra credit points to those who show up. What she teaches in class will be on her MC tests so make sure to go. Very encouraging outside of class/after lectures. Sassy sense of humor but some people might take it the wrong way even though she has the best intentions. Take her!
The best professor I have ever had! I got A's on all of her tests, read the textbook and do the end of chapter quiz as well as the review tests from her d2l and you'll be fine. Make sure you get your grade as high as you can before the final because the ACS final was tough. I ended the class with a 96 and i'm not the smartest person
Shaw is a good prof. She will help you if you need it, but her tests are very hard. You need to show up to class because she gives in-class activities and quizzes that help you earn extra credit. Study and you will be fine!
At first, I thought she was just a mean woman who was too strict. Then I realized that that is just how she talks to people and that shes actually pretty freaking cool and laid-back. She comes off waayyy aggressive, but I promise shes chill. Shes smart, helpful, always willing to talk with students, and has pretty fair straightforward grading.
She is a fine professor. She does teach relatively well and will answer questions. But she will argue you with you even when you are right. She is sometimes very rude. Her grading scale does not make sense a lot of the time. She does not curve, and your final is the ACS. I ended with an 89.43 and she gave me a B.
She goes through the material fast, so get ready to teach yourself everything. if you ask questions she makes you feel dumb & gets almost defensive? 4 exams & mini quizzes thro-out the semester but their extra credit points for ACS. tests are all scantron. She'll leave out important info on the online notes but will have it in inclass notes. so go
I had her for chem1211 and 1212 and loved her. She came off mean at first but when you talk to her one on one she's very nice and genuine. Don't talk in her class while she's teaching (don't talk when any of your teachers are lecturing that is so rude) or she will call you out in front of the whole class. I miss her a lot take her if you can!
In class assignments and quizzes are extra credit. Ms. Shaw is very willing to help and so passionate. I would absolutely take her again if she taught earlier classes. As a student who works with SDS she was very willing to accommodate anything I needed.
Chemistry is hard. If you're taking this class, get ready to study. Dr. Shaw is very intimidating and seems to not care about your grades, but if you get to know you will find that not true. She doesn't bump or curve ANY tests, but drops your lowest test. The ACS final at the end of the semester is one of the hardest tests I have taken.
She is not a all around bad professor, but her attitude can be a bit much to take in. She is knowledgeable on topics, but is sometimes hard to understand which in turn makes it hard to pass the class. She moves through topics fast, and expects you to know it next class most of the time there is a pop quiz. Take at own risk some people like her.
Great teacher but hard class. Fantastic at explaining concepts and very available/willing to answer questions. The class is very hard and the test averages are low, but you can definitely get a high grade if you work for it. Homework, 4 tests(lowest dropped) and a final.
Don't listen to all of these negative reviews. I was afraid because of that when I signed up her class. Prof. Shaw is one of the best chem professors. She explains all the material very well. She is funny too. If you study hard, do the homework, ask her if you have any questions, and attend to lecture, you will do well in the class.
great teacher but hard tests. be prepared to study well! she is also pretty sarcastic and can be condescending so be ready. other than that pretty straightforward class. she will NOT bump even like .2 points!
AVOID!!! Worst professor Ive ever had. Clearly does not give a crap about the grades of her students. Talks down to you if you ask a question. Teaches in a very vague, hard to understand way. Test averages were always in the 60s and no curve.
I am not sure why her rating is so high. I read through the reviews before registering for this class hoping that she would be more like the positive reviews than the negatives but I was very wrong. Shaw is the worst professor I have had yet. Tests are 60% of your grade and are extremely hard. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Avoid!
Unless you are a chemistry major or extremely good at chem, don't take this class. Tests are a huge part of your grade, and are extremely difficult. Unless you make at least a C+ or B- on every exam, you won't even make a B in the class. Lowest test doesn't get dropped, instead final can replace lowest tests. Save yourself, don't take her class.
For a class that is known for being very hard, she is the least sympathetic teacher ever. She doesnt teach a majority of units because you learned it in 1211 and if you have a question she will make you feel like an idiot and ask another student to answer. Homework isnt even tested on and tests are out of 150 points. Luckily I dropped.
I have never made a C in a class in my entire life until I took Janet. Ignore her overall rating, It should be much lower. I studied everyday for this class, and I still ended up with a C. As a pre-med getting a C in this class basically destroyed my chances of getting into med school. Tests are 60% of your grade and very hard. DONT TAKE
Professor Shaw is a good Professor, on some topics I got a little bit lost and stayed after and she answered my questions perfectly. Sometimes when you ask questions related to class rather than the topics she can be a little be condescending she doesnt like babying people, but as long as you do the homework and ask for help you should be fine
Im not sure why Dr. Shaw has such a high rating. She is condescending when you ask her questions and is very hard to approach after class. She made this class way harder than it needed to be. Tests are 60% of the overall grade and are VERY hard. Theres at least 10 hours of homework for each test. I dont recommend her to anyone. Take anyone else.
She can be very condescending and forward and it can be intimidating to reach out to her. She'll help you out during office hours, etc but you have to put in a lot of work. The tests are all multiple choice but very difficult and there's a lot of material. If you're bad at chem take someone else or you'll struggle a lot.
Shaw is an okay professor. She seemed to care for everyone but don't think she is the best at getting that across. Chem 2 is a difficult class. You will struggle, but I feel that Dr. Shaw didn't make it easier at times. She is condescending at times as well, so watch out. When moving to online learning, she made it more difficult than it had to be.
Professor Shaw has no problem humiliating you in front of 200 students. If you're a shy person who gets intimidated by asking questions do NOT under any circumstances take Janet Shaw for CHEM1212. I only listened to the positive reviews last semester when registering and I've regretted it every day of this entire semester.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Her class was the worst class experience I've ever had. She's very condescending and rude , and WILL make you look like an idiot in front of 200 classmates. You ask too many questions she gets visibly annoyed. Dont even think about sending her an email either, the reply will either be one word or sarcastic. VERY HARD TESTS!
I'll start by saying I am not a slacker. I'm on the deans list and study hard. Chem 1212 is already hard and she made it worse. She gives snarky remarks whenever we ask questions then blames us when we don't want to ask her. There's about 10-15 hours of hw for each unit that is much harder than in class. She won't curve anything. Not even .01%.
Dr. Shaw is an incredibly intelligent professor. She knows what she's talking about and I learned a lot in her class. She doesn't like to repeat herself though, so if you ask a question that's already been answered, she will most likely respond with sarcasm. Tests aren't insanely difficult. Practice what she gives you and you'll be fine!
One of the best professors Ive ever had. Shaw breaks the material down to a very understandable level. She has a very blunt, sarcastic personality that some took as rude. Majority thought it was funny. Shaw will be your best bet if you study hard, show effort, & are extremely dedicated. Ended with an A, but I worked hard for it.
Shaw is very sarcastic and will always have a sarcastic remark for repeated questions or people asking stupid things. She really knows what she's talking about and gives a lot of effort to make sure you know It too. Chem 1212 is a hard class and she makes sure you earn the grade you receive. In the end it's all up to how much you work in the class.
I think people who don't struggle with chem won't mind her. I managed to teach myself, because she's sarcastic when you ask questions. Says she won't go over a question because no time, but spends 30ish mins for group work. No curves only quizzes for bonus points. No effort made to make class bearable during quarantine.
Shaw explains material well but this class has so much information it's hard to keep up. I don't usually struggle with commitment but the amount of homework required for this course is ridiculous and way harder than the exams. Not to say the exams are easy though because they definitely aren't and nothing is curved.
People don't like her class because chemistry is difficult but she makes it so easy to do well. All powerpoints are posted online before class, quizzes are extra credit, in-class activities count towards homework grades and u don't even have to do all the homework to get a 100. She always stops to ask for questions and is available outside of class
She explains the pre-lab pretty well and left us to ourselves after that. She was open to any questions. She's pretty strict about significant figures in the lab reports. Doesn't take off alot of points but still marks off.
This class was the bane of my existence. She had no problem humiliating you in front of your classmates for asking a question. She rarely answered emails. One good thing was that if you did better on the final, then she'll replace your test grades. The final was the only thing that saved me and helped me pass the class. Take at your own risk!!
I have never had to withdraw from a class until I took this one. I have always made A's but I was going to make a C so I dropped. It is a very difficult class and she was always very sarcastic and never very helpful when I had questions. My boyfriend was going to fail her class and took another professor and made an A if that says anything.
I took Chem 2 w/ her over summer during rona, and she is the most unhelpful prof I've had. I sent her an email w/ 3 questions I had pertaining to the lecture and she told me to watch the lecture to find my answer. Anytime someone asks questions she basically says "I answered this once, it's your fault you don't get it now" and is no help.
I do not know why there are all these negative comments about Dr. Shaw. Chem 2 is a difficult course, and you will have to work for the grade you want. However, Dr. Shaw is wonderful about responding to questions and very clear in her expectations of you as a student. If you want do not want to work for your grade, consider changing your major.
I cannot explain how horrible this class was. She does not care about you, she does not care about questions unless its an answer she doesnt know, her grading system makes 0 sense (HW isnt for a grade but required and tests are out of 150 points) and she brushes over important details bc we learned it in 1211. I had to withdraw to not fail.
She is very rude!! You ask her a question and she makes you feel bad for not understanding or she says she already has answered it. She does not help at all and her exams are very hard to understand. If she is behind schedule she rushes through slides or does not do examples which you need for quizzes after EVERY class.
Janet is very blunt and comes off as rude if you ask questions. She seems to speed run through lectures and barely does any practice problems within the lecture. She does give opportunities for extra points with a cushion for homework and quiz grades so you can get potential "bonus points" Be prepared for a quiz every class and sarcasm.
I would not take this Professor for 1212. She doesnt answer any questions about 1211, instead shell say you should have learned that concept in 1211. She also does not try and help her students as her test extra credit is only 5 points each time. So if you fail a test you get a slightly higher F with the extra credit.
I could write a novel about what a nightmare she is. I had to try to take the CLEP exam to test out to save my grade. She doesn't care about her students, she harasses her students in lectures. The grade is based off on 4 exams (she doesn't drop anything) and uses a "point system for bonus". Doesn't help your grade. Avoid her at ALL costs!
AWFUL. Take anyone else if you can. She had 180 students in her class at the start of the year and now only 70 kids are in her class. She teaches content that is not even on the ACS exam. She won't reply to emails. Her class average tests are always failing. She does not do anything to help students succeed. Her redemption assignments don't help.
best chem prof ive ever had. ofc the tests will be like 80% of your grade LOL welcome to college.
Honestly, Professor Shaw is great. I took her for CHEM 1 and 2 got an A and a B. Although it is a generally hard class for most, she is great and ready to answer questions. Homework will likely be your life support as takes some of the pressure of the tests. I didn't find the test personally difficult although they were tedious and time-consuming.
The absolute worst professor ive ever had. She is rude and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. She does not care about her students, she does not try to help you. There were 180 kids in the class and that dropped to 70 by the middle of the semester. Every test had a class average of failing. Do not take her at all costs, seriously.
I only had her for 1212L but I thought she was pretty responsive and thorough about what was expected. As long as you come to lab having read it and having at least an idea of what to expect, she's more than willing to help you. She's also good about replying to emails regarding grades and questions about the lab
Taking this professor was a big mistake. I took this class during the pandemic and it was horrible online. Shaw is not personable and often made students feel less than for asking questions. Felt like a personal attack if you asked her about anything. I was scared to go to her outside of zooms. Half the class dropped by the midpoint. Please avoid!
Worst professor I've had. The point of a professor is to teach and help the student. She just carries on like she just gives perfect lectures and expects you to understand. When you have a question, she immediately shuts you down with the most condescending tone. And it's definitely not just an individual grievance, all my former classmates too
I took her in person. She is condescending and puts ALL students down. I had a question because she never showed work. She said to me in front of 200 people, "if you don't understand then drop my class and go back to high school algebra. People who don't know BASIC math don't belong here." You cannot learn in an environment that doesn't allow it.
I have mixed feelings for this professor. She is very rude during her lectures to those that ask questions. I don't think I would have done well if I did not already have a good understanding of chemistry. She expects you to immediately understand and she is very impatient. The tests are hard but she does put out worksheets very similar to the test
Dr. Shaw is rude and condescending to students who dont ask the most specific questions. Whats worse is she acts confused about why nobody comes to office hours. She makes no attempt in helping students who are struggling and does not miss a chance to make everyone feel lesser than because of their chem knowledge. I taught myself from the textbook.
when going over new content (with some concepts from 1211) she would repeatedly say how we were supposed to know this and how she wouldnt review it except in office hours(even then youd get ridiculed if you asked)expects you to know everything after talking about it briefly. also said the same about algebra and doesnt explain answers. i dropped
Janet Shaw is possibly the worst professor I have ever had. She's incredibly disrespectful to students, doesn't allow any room for mistakes, and acts like she'd rather be anywhere else than teaching. I'm not a chem genius, but even w studying for hours, doing all homework, and asking questions (which were mocked and ignored) I still had to drop.
I am not brilliant but I'm not dumb either. I am a junior and this was the only class I have ever had to drop. She mocks students, and if you ask a ? she immediately says you should have learned it in chem 1. I busted my butt in this class and still had to drop it. AVOID AT ALL COST
I mean, she wasn't the worst professor I've had. Her extra credit is a one time offer, nothing is dropped, and there are quizzes due after every lecture (so attend them). She explains things relatively clearly, but her answering to questions may come off as condescending; mentally prepare. I had an A until the final, so the class wasn't too bad.
Shaw is very condescending when it comes down to answering questions. Her response is "I will not take class time out to answer that question" even when there is an underlying 1211 basis that could easily be reviewed in 2 minutes. She expects you to know the information 100% after explaining it one time. Do not take it if you're bad at chemistry.
Honestly just meh, simply a mediocre teacher. She teaches well and has lots of resources for her students to be successful, however will NOT take class time to go over confusing topics. She is very assessable outside class but her rude nature does not make me want to go to her for help. I would try to avoid to take her, but if need be, shes ok.
When it comes to grading she is very strict and she doesn't curve or give you a chance to fix a mistake. She's not very caring or generous. I would 100% recommend you find a more caring professor. She will answer your questions, but she seems very annoyed if you don't understand the material.
Overall, Shaw was an awesome professor. She always stops in lecture to make sure we understand and have time to ask questions, and she is so helpful in office hours (mine were virtual.) You are graded on 4 exams, the final, and homework (get 200 points and you get a 100 for section) Her humor is a little dry but she really does care about us!
She is willing to answer any and all questions. Her lectures are clear and concise. She responds to all questions in a timely manner. If you do the homework and come to class, you will do fine. There are chances for bonus points as well.
Dr. Shaw is an amazing instructor, and a very kind person. Seriously confounded by any reviews suggesting the contrary. Dr. Shaw knows the material, in and out... she has a PhD, but she's totally cool and approachable. She is one of the sweetest, most down-to-earth professors at KSU. Her labs were both helpful and enjoyable. I'd recommend, 100%.
Prof Shaw is good when it comes to teaching the content and answering questions. The only part that upset me was how she graded the exams. There is no partial credit and she only takes the answer you put on the scantron. She doesn't take any work that was done during the exams (ie. steps for stoichiometry, rate law, etc).
Great professor. She comes early to class and stays late after to answer questions and opens the floor for questions constantly as she teaches. She lets you know what the cover page of exams look like and drops the lowest exam grade at the end of the semester. She does many in class assignments and answers questions about the material.
She was one of the best professors that I have ever received. She gives out the homework one month in advance and is not due until the day before class. She often won't answer questions in class unless they are on the topic but she is always reachable via email or after class to answer any question you have. Her homework are harder than her test.
Dr shaw's lectures are good, providing all the information you'll need to know in a mostly clear and concise fashion. Shaw makes topics covered easy to understand, and your grade in the class will be determined primarily by your grasp of the material rather than doing a large amount of frivolous work, as the majority of your grade is from exams.
Professor Shaw is a great professor, don't get me wrong. But the point system she grades by sucks. I tried really hard in this class, yet still failed every exam. This class is hard and you definitely have to learn a lot of the stuff outside of class, but it isn't terrible. She is strict and kinda can come off as rude.
Dr. Shaw is great. Her course is difficult, but she gives every opportunity to succeed. Some say she is rude, but she just gets irritated when you ask a question that makes it obvious you werent listening. She is kind to those who dont act entitled to an A. Difficult content and will take hard work, but she gives extra credit and tons of support.
Dr. Shaw's teaching style really helped me succeed in chemistry. Her lectures have step by step examples of problems that will be on the test. There are graded in class activities that you do with a partner. The homework is helpful, especially the conceptual questions. She doesn't like to waste time so don't as stupid questions.
Dr. Shaw is not a hard professor. Her lectures and homeworks line up with the test material. She even posts previous test questions for extra practice problems. After each test, there is an exam redemption which is considered extra credit. I think Dr. Shaw really cares about her students, but you have to meet her halfway!
Very rude to students that she doesn't respect, lets personal oppinion of students effect their grade.
never met a professor who wanted their students to succeed more then Dr Shaw. Chem1212 is just a overall hard class which is typical, i haven't taken chem 1211 in almost two years so this class was a struggle. she's constantly asking to see if her students have questions and gives so many ways to excel in this course. i HIGHLY recommend Shaw.
Dr. Shaw wasn't the best in my opinion, just not the teaching style for me. Zero extra credit and rude to students when they ask her to repeat a concept she states in class. My first C and did horrible on the final despite studying for weeks. Id take a different professor if there are other options.
Take somebody else at all costs. Passed all test with A's, but due to the final nationwide exam, got a C in the class. Extremely rude to students, no extra credit, only does one question per concept and will not go over any other examples for help. Constantly refers to old material as 1211 material instead of refreshing peoples minds who r confused
Dr. Shaw's teaching style takes some adjusting, but she genuinely wants her students to succeed. The homeworks and in-class activities are super helpful for understanding the material. unstuck ai was a game-changer for my chem prep - highly recommend it alongside the textbook!
Dr. Shaw's lectures are very informative and tell you exactly what's going to be on the test. She has 6-7 homework assignments per unit due before each test but are relatively short. Sometimes she is stern but it is out of tough love. Make sure you understand Chem 1211 concepts well because she holds you accountable!
Overall, not a completely bad teacher. It does take time to adjust to her teaching habits but she just wants students to pass the class. She does random in class participation assignments and mainly grades those off accuracy. She does read from the PowerPoints, which are posted online so lectures can be boring but she does offer help.
shes honestly pretty good. at first you have to adjust with her dry humor, but she just wants students to do good. I was able to do well on all tests because I went to her office hours each week. there's usually barely students there, so I was able to get help directly from her. her tests were pretty straightforward and she offers extra credit
Not a bad chemistry teacher. I blame myself for the bad grade I recieved. I personally felt like her class environment was hostile and mean, though you could consider it dry humor. I was often scared to ask questions because I thought she would get mad at me. The homework was easy, you get 3 attempts. All quizes and tests are multiple choice.
Dr. Shaw is hilarious but in a dry humor kind of way. Some might be afraid to ask her questions but personally I was not. I found it harder to follow her lectures, but that might be because of the content. Go to si sessions, office hours, read the book, watch youtube videos!! This class is hard! (Hello Dr. Shaw I know you read these :))
I absolutely loved Shaw. She is definitely blunt, which i appreciated more than not. She provides plenty of super clear instruction as to what are on her exams. Attendance is required and she gives in class activites but you get to work with a partner, which helped me understand it more and make friends. I went to office hours and she is so helpful
You don't need the textbook for this class at all. The test questions are the same structure as the homework, and 20% your grade is from the ACS final. The online lectures are clear; she is very quick & good with communication. She has extra credit (up to 5% of final grade), but expressed she never otherwise rounded up final grades in 20 years.
