She knows her stuff well, but cannot teach it! Her useless lectures and extremely difficult homework assignments do not prepare you at all for her exams. Never give full credit for anything. Avoid her at all costs.
Nice lady, bad teacher. I think shed be better off in a lab doing research than teaching a class. Her tests contain irrelevant material and she is an extremely difficult teacher.
she is the greatest teacher ever! she's so caring and nice!! i dont know wat other ppl are talkin about!!! she's tuff, i have to say.. but she lays down the foundation for chem1b... chem 1b was much easier thanx to her.
Run for the hills. Avoid Truttman at all costs. Not only does she not know how to teach, but she makes things even more confusing than they need to be. She is by far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. DO NOT take her.
Polite, but by FAR the WORST teacher EVER!!! Very unwilling to share her extensive knowledge of the subject. Good luck prying actual information that you can work with from her. And her tests...Ur in for a BIG surprise, bc it's all unmentioned material!

she is a horrible teacher. she didn't explain the lecture. she tests on everyday
hard!if you like to take test and write boring stuff, go take her. and you'll get test and exam everyclass. lots of homework. boring!! you have to wirte study sth in paper~~~boring
She is a great prof. She explains things thoroughly before we do any work. She gives examples during lecture. She always answers your questions and if you need any help she makes herself available to help you. She is fair when it comes to grading. I recommend her alot esp. to whoever wants to learn.
explans lecture well, you'll learn lots of stuff from this class.quiz every day,3 FQ quiz,3 exams, and you have to write lots of notes from the board.will check your profolio for 2~3times,this for 10%.lots of thinks to learn.it is difficult in the beginning, but you'll find out it is very useful for your exam.fair grades.
Truttmann is very approachable and a great teacher with great explanatory skills. She is thorough and expects you to do your work and stay on task. She's very nice and her exams are easy if you do all your hw,and study on a regular basis. Its chemistry, you have to invest a lot of time, otherwise choose a social science major. Highly Recommended.
Janet is a very series person when it comes to teaching. If you go visit her in here office hours she will be extremely happy that you did that and might go that extra mile to help you out with difficult problems. If you have problems encountering people with attitude then dont take her because you might get the wrong impression
Seriously, it's a four unit class, so plan on doing homework and studying. For the most part, she's pretty easy going, teaches well, and makes sure-by consistingly asking if students have any questions- everybody gets the concepts before moving on. The only reason you'll find this class dificult is if you're lazy or just tend not to do well in chem
I think she is a pretty good teacher, I am really learning from her class. But you need to prepare to a lot of work from her class, especially the lab report. If you go to visit her or ask her question after class like office hour, she is really helpful and nice.
She is the far, second worst teacher I have ever meet. She cannot teach. And when you ask for help...(oh man, you just asked the wrong person) because she will just keep asking you questions. I learn **** from her. Here is an analogy: you can learn more chemistry from a monkey than her. I think my IQ keeps droping from going to that class!!!
God, she does not know how to teach! My friends & I took her computer-based class and we all ended up dropping out. We are all good engineering studnets. My other 2 friends who took Dr. T w/ me have transferred to Berkeley and I'm at UCLA now. So it's not us. All she did in her class was letting us look at computers and read by ourselves. She sucks.
Dr. Truttman is extremely intelligent, and sometimes it seems that our questions seem dumb to her. She doesn't say they are but you can see it in her face. Her lectures are confusing and her tests are SO hard! I received an A in this class but i had to practically live and breath chemistry for the entire 18 weeks!
I like her as a person, however, I dont think she needs to be so harsh when she grades the long reports. Watch out for a lot of homework!! She is harder than Dr.B. Take Mrs. DiMauro!
Pro.T is an extremely hard teacher.....I am currently in her class and I am struggling "BIG TIME"...I hate that class....I am misserable...and she is going to send me to HELL real soon... can you belive that i am an honor student and failing...yeah well you get the point. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
so organized that you'll become a more organized person after taking this class. ppl say she is hard, but she isnt, 'coz she explains stuff so well that you understand them really thoroughly. a lot of lab writeups, but the good things is as long as you do them the way she wants, you'll get a good score even you screw up the lab totally.
She is sooo hard and grades hard. She gives alot of homework and she doesn't giv pts for hw. Shes very intelligent but she doesn't know how to teach. Her explainations are so complicated. All in all she sucks!!
She is an awesome professor! I loved her class. I wasn't very interested in chemistry before I took this class, but now I love it. I didn't use the book hardly at all, but most people in the class did. She is very helpfull, as long as you ask questions.
THIS PROFESSOR IS NICE BUT VERY HARD. SHE CONFUSE EVERYONE BETTER OF STUDY OFF THE BOOK. DONT RECOMMED TAKING THIS INSTRUSCTOR YOU WILL END UP DROPPING LIKE I DID
This teacher is extremely hard. Her handouts are the best part about the class. They're very helpful and organized, but her exams are extremely difficult. I would not recommend this teacher if you're trying to get an A in this class. It's definitely possible, but unless you're very good at chem, I'd suggest looking into another professor.
This teacher is hard. You will need to study. You will need to do the work. Her tests are complicated. I took this class over winter and there's A LOT of information. The teaching sucks and class is boring. I would NOT recommend her but if get her as a teacher it's not impossible.
I was overwhelmed with the comments at first. To be honest, she wasn't BAD at all! She's totally helpful, she always ask our class if we have questions. She gives us handouts which is REALLY reliable for students who doesn't have a book. She gave us donuts during review class/Finals. Took her during winter and got a C w/o studying. -tomi
what should I say! she is hard..like really hard..no extra credit.very very hard on grading..but , she is great at teaching. she knows all the stuff, makes everything understandable. I got an A in the class just because of the fact that I breathe chemistry. A lot of studying. If u r hardworking, then take her. if not, then forget of even getting C.
Had her for chem 10 lab and I must say, she is extremely helpful and very nice/approachable! Most of the class did well!
i had her for chem 10 lab and i really recommend her! :) she's a fun teacher and explains the lab procedures really! even better than my lecture prof! i recommend her
She's a great teacher. That pretty much sums it up. She's so easy to learn from, and I really reccommend her because of how thorough she is. The class will be hard if you don't apply yourself. She has mom eyes though and she sees everything, especially when people copy off eachother. Overall she's a great teacher and great person.
She is the toughest chemistry professor you will ever encounter! And very cold-hearted. She will convince you to change your major.
I never once opened the book. Just went to every class and a ton of office hours and studied her notes and went into the final with a 95%. She answers all your questions thoroughly. If you put in effort you can easily get an A. But the work is time consuming, so plan your term accordingly. But you can easily get an A with effort.
Easy prof. Taught you everything you need to know for the test, nothing more, nothing less. The test was everything on the handouts. Always responded to emails quickly. Very thorough when teaching. Very straightforward professor. No guess work. Definitely take her for chem 10.
Very Helpful but be ready to work! You will learn so much no matter what goal a student is pre-med, engineering, or science based she will get you ready. Always willing to help, and answers questions email or office hours dont let anyone tell you different.Great Professor with a heart of gold!
Take her if you are serious, a hardworker, and want to learn. She if flat out HARD. Lab reports and HW take at least 3 hours EACH and there are a LOT of them (and I mean a LOT). She is NOT an easy A, you will need to work HARD and GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND ASK FOR HELP. Book not required at all and don't DITCH all info is in lecture...GL I got a C
Chem 10 Winter- A lot of information for this class, any time it is taken. Prof. Truttmann, I am sure is very good during a full semester, for winter or summer she has NO MERCY. You must become chemistry to do well.
She is so nice. She will go out of her way to see if you are doing ok. Seriously the coolest professor at Mt. Sac. She lets you eat in class, and have your cell phone out. She is extremely easygoing. She does grade hard, but the material comes directly from her notes. Amazing, I will definitely take her for chem 51
Going into this class, I had read student's reviews about this teacher and knew I had my work cut out for me. This professor means business and she has high expectations from all her students. I honestly didn't think I would be able to get an A in her class because she likes things done a certain way but if I got an A, so can you! Just work hard!
Pros: Curves the exams if the average is low, fair grading, helpful lecture notes, friendly. Cons: Does not pregrade your hw. Does not print out the notes for you. Tips: Understanding labs are important for the exam. MasterinChem helps you to understand her lecture.Im currently 97% overall in her class.I spend ~5hrs/wk home inclduing writing report.
Class is difficult. you think you get it but you dont. Its frustrating because just a few mistakes on your test will make your test a C. Teacher is crystal clear though. I earned an A barely. I studied the study guide she gave out and the test the WHOLE DAY before finals. and pulled a last min A. So STRESsful. I thought i liked chemistry -_-
Very good teacher, definitely is there to help you when you need it, tough but fair grader. You will need to set aside some time to really study for this class. Mastering Chem was the most tedious part of this class. Overall, had a lot of fun and learned a lot!
Probably the only time I learned in any Chem class. Her exams are based all on the hw and lecture notes. That's literally all I used to study, plus office hours. And I got the highest grade on every exam without buying the book. Just understand the hw and lectures, and you will get an A. BUT she means business with lab reports.
Chemistry is hard. No matter what. But she was one of the best teachers I've had and this course is one of the hardest for intro chem. She made it very straightfwrd. Not condescending &patient..all good things with chem.Exams based off notes. Final shot in the dark. Based off understanding of entire class. Not other exams.Work hard and you'll pass
I would recommend taking her during a 16 week course. I took her during the winter and it was too much information in a short amount of time. Very little time to ruminate on work. She is very nice and will never make you feel less than a person if you mess up on a problem.
Professor Truttmann helped me to finally understand chemistry. This was my second time taking Gen. Chem. and I actually passed with a grade a lot higher than what I was expecting! First time I took it was at a university and with 400+ classmates, so there was not much attention individually. This class is so much better than the previous one I took
Available for help. Clear guidelines. Study for her tests. Passed with a B for winter session but worked for it.
She's a very nice person but not the best teacher. Only take if you live and breathe chemistry (I don't). She will show you simple concepts and expect you to master the complicated ones on your own. I self-learned by watching videos online. No curve, replaces lowest exam with final if you score higher. Lots of group work and mastering chem hw.
GROUP WORK! Get ready for group work (really easy, answers are in the book). Exams are straight off the notes, NO MASTERING CHEM!!!! 15 problems a week for homework, gives printed notes and I did not even open the text book and got an A. Plus she curves all exams and the class at the end of the semester! Not a good 51 professor but amazing at 80!
Not recommended for Ochem, especially if you're taking hard classes at the same time. The concept is hard to understand already and her lectures barely helps. The class consumes your time and there are assignments due every day. All of them counts toward your grade!! Also I find it ridiculous that we had 3 exams for final on a same day!
She doesn't teach the lectures you must read ahead on your own, she assigns A LOT of homework, which is due before she even lectures most of the time. Doesn't go over problems with you if you don't understand something.
When I was in highschool, I totally failed my AP Chem class. I was truly suprised how well I understood the material to the point where I even got a 99% on the cumulative final. She's an amazing Professor who knows her material well. She's organized and clearly explains. Hit her up with email for questions. Don't slack, it's your loss.
She is extremely patient with her students and is willing to help you. Extra perk, if you have the highest grade you get cool stuff. Overall this class is easy but only if you put in the effort (studying, showing up to class, participating, etc.).
I took this course in Winter. She is very caring and patient. She explaines things very well and is always available for help. Put in your effor, you will get an A
Our class started out w/about 20 people and there are only 8 remaining. Even our lab teacher said that this was the lowest lab group he has ever had. Not to mention she is a super hard grader and takes off points for the smallest things. Even if your answer is correct she will take off a point because you forgot to write something in ur answer.
She does not care about you or the class what so ever, which is fine, but if she doesnt want to help she shouldn't be so difficult when grading. She does not understand time management very well, and gets to deep into a topic when we just need to understand the basic concepts first. It makes it very hard to follow.
I took this course over the winter semester and let me tell you, this was one of the most difficult courses I have ever had at Mt. SAC. Professor Truttman assigned many assignments every week, which were extremely stressful cause they are time-consuming. I took this course only because she was the only one available. But do yourself a favor, DONT.
Run if you ever take this professor she is so picky with any assignment and if you got the answer correct but not in her way it's wrong. Anytime her zoom or internet does not work she said "I am going to continue anyway so try following along." she accused a student of cheating she gives material that does not work with the book overall skip her
Took her chem 10 class during winter and it was a breeze!!! She is very understanding and tries her best to help if you are confused. She also goes over how she wants the problems to be solved and how the answers should be written. Basically pay attention during lecture and memorize what is required to pass the class.
It is expected that Chemistry wouldn't be an easy class. However, she gives too much work and is extremely nit-picky regarding lab reports and even when you've followed everything as instructed you're still expected to do more even when it is something you haven't learned about. If you have a hard time with Chemistry, don't take her.
Assigns way too much work that is difficult to manage if you have other classes, a job, or friends and family you want to enjoy time with. Even she herself is getting overwhelmed with the amount of stuff she has to grade, like ma'am you don't need to assign that much! Very picky with lab report grading and she's killed my love for chemistry.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of working with. She puts a lot of work at such a small time frame that people legit had panic attacks from this class. Her grading is bad as she took 11 out of 20 grades for one minor mistake.Explanations are poor would not recommend her unless you enjoy punishing yourself.
Would rather slam my tongue with a car door than take this class or see this professor again. Believes life should revolve around her class and assigns about 10-14 assignments a week and has no compassion towards students' personal lives. Posts assignments one day before they are due and is probably the worst person I have ever met. Run.
I took her for spring 2022 and i had such a good time in her class. Yes its rigorous but thats obvious because its chemistry. She does give students opportunities to understand certain topics as well. A lot of homework online. If you study and pay attention in class, youll get an A
To put it bluntly...RUN! I've never had a worse experience with a professor. Beats around the bush whenever she speaks. Very unfair grader regardless of the time and effort put in. Will take off points on anything that sounds like you're not a chemist with a PhD which none of us clearly are so you'll learn more by reading this than in her class
Professor Truttmann is not for the faint of heart! Here are some things to be aware of: - maybe 1 partner lab during the semester - extensive packets in class and for homework - does not post lecture slides - tests range from 10-15 pages (no multiple choice) There is a lot expected of you as a student. I do not recommend it if not a chem major.
Professor Truttmann offers office hours after class but made me feel like an idiot. I am challenged when it comes to math and chemistry so her attitude towards me was very demoralizing. Doesn't review for upcoming exams and jumps directly into next chapter. NO extra credit. Lacks empathy for first time college students.
Honestly, one of my favorite professors I've ever had. She doesn't have the warmest personality, but she is amazing at what she does. I was really terrified to take chem, as I thought I would really struggle. I understood the material very well from her, and I love that she gives you packets to take very detailed notes to study on. 10/10 recommend
Professor Truttmann was an ok professor but, if you are taking ay other courses that are slightly difficult I don't suggest this teacher for this course. The work load is very heavy with online work and in class work. She requires you to buy semi-expensive textbooks as well. I wouldn't retake a class with this professor again or recommend it.
Great professor, She is really trying to help you to get a good grade in class.
take if you like doing a lot of work to learn nothing
If you do the homework and read from the book you will do well, but the class it tough. I recommend that you take a physics class prior (REALLY). This class goes over thermochemistry, gas chemistry, electricity, and quantum stuff. Additionally I recommend reading the OpenStax Chem 2e textbook before you take the class. Have fun!
She assigns a lot of reading and lecture packets that sometimes don't even help too much. Practice problems are the most helpful and reflective on exams, but you have to study more. She does a shoddy job of teaching more difficult to understand/comprehend topics, so you're on your own, and the tb sucks. I got a good grade, but not because of her.
This professor does not respect your time. In fact, she seems to not respect chemistry as a subject, and will be unable to answer any curiosity beyond surface-level. Even if you understand the topics, you will need to spend a weekly 5-10 hours on unhelpful busy work assigned out of class. If you're considering her honors course, it'snot worth it.
She really likes giving handouts. What she really should be doing is handing out her letter of resignation to the dean. Time to hit the retirement home. woot woot
If you like chemistry very much, it is really helpful to choose this professor! Because you spend most of your time on chemistry and you will learn a lot. With her help, you will find that chemistry is a very rigorous subject.
This was probably the most amount of homework I've had to do for a class. Multiple assigments due a week and she takes a while to grade them. Lots of reading and other assignment's like lab worksheets. Tests are formatted similarly to the in-class worksheets. Tough grader and will mark points off lab worksheets willy-nilly
Chemistry is a dense subject as it is, so don't expect to just breeze through the honors sequence. Professor Truttmann is highly knowledgeable and more than happy to guide you if you are lost. If you want to learn Chemistry in depth from a phenomenal teacher, enroll in this class. If you are looking for an easy A on your GE's, go elsewhere.
Just not worth taking. Her instruction is worse than most other 50 profs, so you don't get a more rigorous education. You end up doing more work too, under a lot of scrutiny because she is very pedantic, so your GPA is at a higher risk. I learned more chem in a small PHYS 4C unit compared to her entire class...
Do not take her please!
While the professor assigned a large number of assignments per week, they weren't overly complicated, but they did take a significant amount of time. If you're stuck on specific aspects of the lecture or on lab, she does answer your questions. Overall, she is caring when you ask for help and visit her office hours.
Professor Truttman's class is tough but manageable if you attend and study regularly. Her tests are challenging, with no multiple choice and full written work required. Lectures are clear, though her fill-in-the-blank handouts can hinder note-taking. She's kind and approachable. Tip: on the first day, find and sit near engaged peers for group work.
She does not know how to teach. I found I learned nothing from her. I'm wondering why she is still teaching. She should get out.
She's caring but her teaching style is disorganized. Her class requires an unsustainable level of work which does not help with the tests. Does little to help you understand the material and doesn't give any test preparation. Made me switch majors.
