Jumps randomly between subjects during lectures, which are otherwise droll and unclear (and unimaginative). Lots of overheads, which don't clarify anything. Avoid if possible. Husband is better if more difficult.
jumps from subject to subject. u know what? just avoid her. she's awful
Great Professor, very helpful and knowledgeable. Class could be a bit dull at times, but than again there's only so much one can do to make biology interesting.
she is a really nice person and has a good sense of humor. the service learning thing was a joke but she approaches it in the best way possible.
Very unclear and hard to follow. She was definitely not one of my favorite instructors and I would avoid taking another class from her.
She was very straight forward. I opened the book three times at max and managed an A-. I just studied straight from the notes I took, and took notes straight from the board.
She's very erratic. Bright, but erratic. Material isn't taht difficult, but you have to be willing to put in a lot of out-of-class time to study...because she can't get to it all. Cyto should be 3 units and not 2.
Great Professor!! She really made an effort to expose the students to cutting edge technology. She also always made time to answer questions. Biology is a difficult subject and she made it fun!
I did not like her at all. She was boring and doesn't have a personality. Her weekly quizzes were tricky and caused me to fail the class...she sucks. Avoid her like the plague.
she was sooooo unorganized! she always came to test days late with only half of our tests. she never tested on what was on the study guide. she constantly did not know the answer to some things, and she said she would look them up and never did. her lectures were all powerpoint that someone else made and it came straight from the book.
THIS PROFESSOR WAS RUDE AND DEGRADING TO ME. SHE HUMILIATED ME FOR MY POOR MATH BACKROUND DESPITE MY ENORMOUS EFFORTS & DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED. AVOID HER UNLESS YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE CRAP!
Took genetics with her. Her tests are nothing like her study guides. She can't give clear presentations all she does is explain diagrams.
Her tests are nothing like her study guide. I learned nothing from her lectures I had to teach myself from the book. Her curves are useless. She was frequently absent and tardy to class. She seemed aloof and not dedicated at all. Worst professor I have ever had!
Great Professor, Hard class. Although she seems unorganized at times, and she has issues with computer, Janey really wants to see her student succeed, and tries to explain as much as she can
This class was a waste of time and money. I had to teach myself genetics. The lec's were boring and she only read, not explained. I hate writing bad stuff about teachers, but she is terrible. I'm sad that others will be forced to take her and find the same issues.
I used the book to teach myself genetics. She is aweful. When students asked questions she was lost, rude, and degrading. Terrible teacher for sure.
It seems as if she is not even a teacher, a student could explain the class better then she can. She is horrible at explaining things and answering questions. It almost seem as if she is clueless about the topics. Her study guides have nothing to do with her tests. Dont take her inless you want to learn genetics on your own and shes helpless
unorganized, class is pointless, rude!, impossible to contact, lies when confronted(literally!!!!!!), she just doesn't want to teach and it shows.
DONT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!she's the worst. I have never done so bad in my life!!I swear I study like crazy and ask for help.Don't go ask for her help unless you want to waste 1hr listening to her figuring out your problem and end up not knowing the answer! Also, I went to her office hrs a lot and still fail every exam.
Do not take her!I took her because she was the only teaching the course but now i wish i hated waited for another semester.Class is pointless she doesn't teach, she can't answer questions when asked, and she looks down upon students. Her test are impossible even with studying and everything you learn you have to teach yourself by reading.
Buy the book new. It comes with a CD that explains everything to you. She can not explain things, I had to learn everything from videos online. She is unfair in grading too. I answered a question EXACTLY like my friend did, but I lost more points on it then she did. And it was a simple 2 word answer question, not an essay. Check your tests!!
I'm a Bio major and she is basically the worst professor I've encountered. To be fair I think she's a bright lady, but she honestly can't teach. She makes a horrible teacher. She just reads off her powerpoints(that aren't even hers) and can't answer student questions. And her exams are difficult. You will basically be teaching yourself.
Avoid her if possible. She is very intellectual, but does not teach well. She is all over the place. Her exams are difficult. Like stated below, be prepared to teach yourself. Her study guides were helpful, however.
Not a teacher ate all, she seems lost most of the time. Take genetics with her husband if possible. Be prepared to teach yourself if you take her. her test were fine i just had to teach myself
Save yourself the time and money and take this class with someone else...anyone else. Youngblom is useless as a teacher, she reads from her power points in class (which she posts on blackboard anyway) and can barely answer questions that students ask her without seeming completely confused. If you need this class take it with someone else.
I wish i checked this website before signing up for this class. You really need to read the book and learn the subject yourself. Her lectures are pointless, unless she writes examples on the blackboard. This class made me really hate genetics. I really do not care for this class any longer.
Really smart but a bad teacher. Confuses herself when trying to explain concepts. Stands in front of class and twirls her hair.
This woman knows her biology/DNA However she is a horrible teacher. So unorganized, just had our first test and she failed to mention we needed a calculator, wouldn't let us use our phones instead and to top it all of she didn't even have enough tests for everyone in the class. This is going to be an interesting semester, will do credit no credit.
She made genetics become a horrible subject. Do not take her, not a good teacher. Don forget to take a pillow to class because you will need it
This professor is completely lost, she goes off on random tangents during lecture and makes it very hard to understand what is actually going on. She is completely unorganized and very scatter brained. Her exams were pretty much written in another language with wording and material that was never discussed in class. AVOID!
Intro to Genetics She makes no attempt to tie into what student may attempt to convey. She would often say "You should know this already." or "You already learned this in your pre-req." This is not teaching!! I even bought the solutions manual. It professed genetics to be extremely complicated even for savvy science majors.
I was so disappointed with the Intro to Genetics course. I was so interested in the subject, but she does not teach well at all. She is very knowledgable in the subject, but lectures are extremely dull and you learn more from the textbook than you do from her. She didn't help out very much during office hours and only recommended a tutor instead.
Pretty much echo what a lot of other reviewers have said. She REALLY knows the subject she is just awful at conveying it. She does kind of talk down to you on things she feels you should know. I did well in the class but only because I studied the text and did the mastering homework.
Terrible, terrible class. It is NOT introductory and incredibly hard to get a good grade. Class averages were D's on tests and she wont curve final grades even with half the class failing. Good luck. I'm never taking her again.
I had really low expectations based on other reviews on here, and I have to say I don't think she was that bad. Yea her lectures could be better and she does pay way too much attention to the ends of her hair when she talks, but if you read the text and do the online work it's not that hard of a class.
this teacher is the WORST teacher in history! she makes chemistry classes seem more interesting, not only is she annoying but if you dont read the book yourself you are ruined my advice would be NOT to waist time and take class with a useless teacher like her
I wish there was another intro genetics teacher that knows how to actually explain things. She is VERY scattered and unorganized in her lectures which are power points that don't look like she made. The ONLY time she explains the tests well is when she is going over them AFTER you took the test. Very simple lecturers that don't explain H.w.
Dr. Youngblom is a very nice professor but in regards to her teaching, she's very mediocre. Her lectures are basically useless, you must read the book. Thankfully she gives a Study Guide, but that only helps if you understand the material. MASTERING GENETICS IS YOUR BEST FRIEND, USE IT AND GET AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE.
Dr. Youngblom should not be an Introduction to Genetics professor or a professor for that matter. I was really interested in Genetics and from the second I listened to her first lecture I knew I would grow to hate it. It is like pulling teeth to get a functional definition during lecture then her test expects you to be an expert. Awful instructor.
Study consistently. Skim the chapter before lecture, take notes in class, & take your own notes after. Keep up w/ her lectures & you'll do fine. The tough part about her exams are the workout/essay ?s. She does similar problems in class so attending class is necessary. Just go to class & don't procrastinate, you'll get a decent grade.
The tests are based off her lectures & whatever she draws on the board (or from the hw) WILL be a short answer q's. She gives 3 exams, 2 papers & 2 quizzes (SUPER easy), & 1 cumulative final. She does NOT curve grades, so getting an A on the hw WILL help you. She is late on grading, but only because she has her own outside projects.
lectures are of no help wish I would have waited to take a different professor, bland when lecturing will not make you love genetics, her power points are not the best either really wish there was a genetics teacher who would make you be interested in the course she does not STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE. nice person though.
Not a good teacher. She's pretty disorganized with lectures that seem to be done without any prior preparation. We were assigned an "escape room" project that was ill-defined and vague. She kept trying to change the project guidelines while presenting them.
Although attendance isn't required, tests include material only discussed in lecture. A few easy, small-stakes assignments, 3 tests, and a major group project that was unorganized and unclear in criteria. Extremely disorganized and confusing professor. Sadly, would not recommend.
This teacher was okay. Her lectures are essentially the gist of what she wanted you to learn out of their respective chapters in the book. So as long as you read the book, you were good. She also gave study guides for tests and easy to write papers as well as a vague group project. Nonetheless, if you read and understand the book, you'll be okay.
She was very scatter-brained. Sometimes spent too much time on irrelevant points in the lecture. Unclear criteria for the class project. There were 2 videos that needed to be viewed outside of class and the quality of both was bad and 1 was hard to access. Posts lecture slides to blackboard.
The class overall did not meet the standards of what the material entails. Felt unprofessional at times. Unclear grading criteria and boring power point lectures. You'll learn more from the book because the .ppt's aren't very thorough. Some of the proposed assignments in the syllabus were never assigned or talked about. Would avoid if can...
PPTs are pitiful; pictures straight from the book w/ no context. Never covers anything effectually & is surprised when her student dont understand how to do problems. Comes to class unprepared every time. 1/2 class stopped showing up after 2nd week cuz of this. Has forgotten tests for the class TWICE. Total was out of 200pts so no room for errors.
Shes not a good professor just like any other bio professors, but shes worse X10. Her exams arent tough, but she needs to post the study guide earlier than having it on blackboard a day before the exam.
A little difficult, but overall fine course. She knows a lot, but for non-bio majors it is difficult to understand her at times. She had discussions connecting genetics with issues in society which was cool.
The class is not hard but its time consuming. Her PowerPoints are just pictures with a little bit of text, she has an extremely soft voice so its almost impossible to hear her. She does post a study guide for the exams a couple days before which isnt always enough since you have to read to know what she is going to test on. And super unorganized
Class isn't too difficult, however she makes it more difficult than should be. Posts long study guides ONE NIGHT before the exam. Comes to class late, takes several minutes just to get her computer running. Whenever you ask any question she always seems confused. The average on every exam was always below a 70% and she never curved. Don't take!
Terrible. She lectures with such cluelessness and is never clear about the topics. Tends to jump around a lot in lecture and its just not straightforward. Very harsh grader on exams. I discussed with classmates after an exam and we all had similar answer/idea but she marked some of us wrong and some of us right. Very hard to reach out of class.
The average for every test was about a 60%, about the same for quizes. It is one of those professors where you are just gonna get tested on stuff that she did not prepare you for so you got to do your best to master all the topics on your own, actually doing the online homework, reading book, recording lectures, etc. Getting an A is hard!!!!!!!!!!!
I can tell you guys everything that is wrong with this woman but what's the point, everyone has said what needs to be said. She has Tenure and her husband is the chair of the Biology department, she is not going to get fired nor change her ways. It's funny, people are scared of Cooper, yet her averages are much higher. Honestly, just take cooper.
I would rather have Trump be the president again than take another course with this woman. The character limit is too small for me to say what needs to be said. All I know is this professor if you can even call her that does not like teaching and it sure does show. Even if exams were open book/note/able to use laptops, it wouldn't matter.
Amazes me how the school has the audacity to make us pay thousands for classes and these are the kind of professors we get. She does NOT care to teach, it shows very clearly. She grades very harshly and the class would catch many typos and errors on the exam that she would have to address every exam when someone brought it up to her. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Read the reviews she had before taking the class. I thought, I can make it work. NO. Do yourself a favor and dont take her. Lecture slides are full of info you dont even know what information is relevant. Save your GPA, do not take her.
Please for your own mental sanity do not take this professor. She doesn't teach just stands and babbles and tests on material she never covered in class and the book doesn't even have examples of. She's more worried about cheating than teaching. If she could only teach, students would not have to cheat! I will be filing a complaint with peers!
Let me just say this. We're in the middle of Covid-19 Quarantine and this lady has went out of her way to make tests difficult and even harder to take exams with her breathing down your neck and talking over zoom during the test. Has no empathy for students and does not care for students despite everything that is going on at this time. Take cooper
Her lecture slides are literally just pictures. I feel like no matter how hard you prepare for exams ( reading book, doing online homework, recording lectures and rewatching and writing down everything, etc), you will get stuff on exams that will make you think to yourself "how in the world am I supposed to know this... like how?" DO NOT TAKE HER.
Do not take this professor. Everyone has already said what needs to be said. It is worth it to take cooper instead even if it means waiting a semester or two.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Does not care about student learning, just throws information at you and doesnt clarify or take its step by step. Shed rather rush through the material to get through it than actually teach it. Do not take her, every minute in her class feels like hours. Save yourself the stress and frustration, take someone else.
She is a fair professor. Anyone complaining about her being unfair probably does not pay attention enough during class. Her quizzes and exams pull heavily from her lectures. As long as you pay full attention during lectures, you should be able to do well in the class. For anyone taking her class in the future, I suggest recording all her lectures.
Her class isn't as bad as everyone is saying. She's really sweet and caring! :) Her lecture slides are pictures, but she explains it well enough during class. Take good notes everything she says during class, most of the stuff she says in class is on the exams. Quizzes look like the exam but shorter/easier. HW and reflection papers are free pts.
By far the worst professor I have taken at Stanislaus. Please listen to everyone and DO NOT TAKE HER. Her lectures consist of pictures and she does not have an organized lesson plan. Her exams are very hard. Has no compassion for students.
Genetics at CSUSTAN be like Ave Ventura with a spear on each leg. On one leg you have Janey Youngblom and on the other you have Cooper. Both a messed up situation but you have to pick one professor you want to take to ruin your GPA. I was doing so well until I got hit with a curve ball. I gave Youngblom 2 shots; time to try Cooper.
I am so glad I never have to see this person ever again in my life. She made the exams so hard so that we cannot cheat, but webcam proctored us to make sure we do not cheat. If she is going to webcam proctor it makes sense to get normal exams which are still wonky to begin with right?... nope, impossible exams and webcam proctor for extra assurance
You hear it all the time on ratemyprofessor, people saying "worst professor ever" and sometimes you think its just a bunch of people mad that they did not get the grade they wanted and that you are smarter and you can make it work. But this professor really truly is the worse of the worse. If you think you can make it work, you are greatly mistaken
I don't care how smart you think you are, how high your gpa is, how big your ego is, take this person and your GPA will go down. I really wanna say it was impossible getting an "A" and I can only imagine how bad it will be in fall now that she is extra ready to screw everyone over. My friends in Cooper's class had a MUCH easier time.
Nice lady, awful teacher, and weird exams.
When I took her, she was late everyday for class and spent another 5 minutes on top of being late setting computer up, canceled class more than 5 times, had her husband teach some lectures, on exam days wouldn't bother to show up and had her husband proctor, she gave study guides the day before exams, took so long to grade, I can go on and on.
Believe me when I say I had to sell my soul in order to earn a B in class. Please, for your own sanity, unless you have friends in this class do not take it. This lady is nice, but is not very good at teaching. Powerpoints are just covered with pictures so you should take some preworkout and listen to her every word. Trust fam this class ain't it.
She does not grade anything until the last day of class. There were about three projects due and I could not see my grade . I would say she is a strict grader and not flexible with test time during the pandemic. She expects you to be online at exactly when class starts, proctored too with the zoom camera on! Please take a different Professor!
She is a HORRIBLE professor, and that is putting it nicely! You can go back and listen to the lecture 5 times and you will come out having learned absolutely nothing, possibly more confused if anything. For a professor with such awful reviews, I truly do not understand how or why she continues or is allowed to continue her career! Don't take her!!!
This is a student in her Genetics class during covid. Two things to know about this professor: 1, Office hours are shared with other students outside of the class. Which already should set a bad taste in your mouth. 2, she took absolutely no consideration for what's going on in the world right now. She also proctors exams with a phone which is..???
Maybe Janey did not go through a pandemic because she sure is acting like she did not. The term "accommodating" is far from Janey's abilities. She has very little empathy for students. And a spineless method to teaching. Take her if you enjoy being frustrated because of a grown adult with a Ph.D. who is unable to act like it. <3
Dont rely on having your grades in an appropriate amount of time because she takes weeks to give grades back. The Averages on her exams were Fs in my semester. Will not curve exams either. Only offers 5 points extra credit for the entire semester which is not a lot.
Taking this class during the pandemic was the worst mistake Ive made. She is the most unaccommodating professor I have yet to have. Practically like nothing has happened for her at least. Exams are proctored in the most unusual way and made changes as the exam was taking place. If you have to take intro to genetics, take it with anyone else.
All I got to say is "just don't do it to yourself if you are a pre-med because it is not worth it". If your registration date was not good enough to get into Cooper's class just be patient and wait.
ALL the negative things said on here are true, so I thought I'll add some positive insights instead. She curves the exams, from 50pts to 47 pts. Responds to emails and available outside of class. Reflection papers and HW are easy points if you try. This class was pretty hard; we covered 17+ chapters; you must really put in the effort!
She is purposely making exams harder during covid in case people find a way to cheat and I know this because I have her old exams for a few semesters prior to covid. She does put some stuff on exams she never talked about in class and I know this because I took the many hours to type everything that came out of her mouth in every class recording.
I took Dr. Youngblom during the COVID pandemic. My tip for you if you decide to take her; study the lectures, don't miss any due dates, and do the extra credit. If you do these things, you should get an A. She give the class a study guide before every exam, they're pretty thorough. She also curved every exam and quiz. Very nice professor.
Consider this a sign from above. Please dont do this to yourself. All that needs to be said is said below.
The powerpoints are just pictures, the exams are essay format, she tests on material that she never discussed, questions on material she did talk about are asked in a way to where you wouldn't have known how to do them with class knowledge, proctors exams via camera. A "C" is doable, a B you got to work extremely hard, an A wont happen.
You have to take the time to go over what comes out of her mouth because that's a good amount of what she tests on even though it's not in words on slides. The online homework is useless. I noticed she would tests on random stuff from the book that is not big picture and low yield. Junior bio major walking into senior year; she broke my 4.0
Terrible professor, would say things like "this goes into that, which inactivate this". Can't even follow what she is saying most of the time, watched recordings at least 2 times for each lecture and that only helped a bit. She's not a terrible person, but she is a terrible teacher. For her class, I took notes on a document because she really spds.
Took Dr. Youngblom's online genetics course. My advice is to take on a lighter course load and put in the extra work to go above and beyond when studying and do not limit yourself to just her contact utilize youtube and what not to have a good overall perspective on the material because what she tests on is different than what she lectures on.
