What she knows is way over ANYBODY's head! Her tests are outrageously hard and in her lectures she talks so fast even my tape recorder had trouble catching everything!
The worst teaching job I have ever seen. I passed the class....but just barely. It was a long 16 weeks. She talks but makes not sense whatsoever.
she was completely talking over my head the entire semester. she knew this yet, didn't bother to try to go back and explain things better. try to avoid at all costs!
She obviously knows what she's talking about, but talks SO fast that you can't understand, she skips around, and has no organization to her lesson. She's your only option for the required class, too, so you're just stuck.
Fantastic teacher
No organization. She should be ashamed to be a teacher/professor. Just terrible.
horrible professor; she couldn't teach a monkey to throw dung.
It was all about her. This was the first time that I had ever made a D in a science class. She held a grudge if you missed class. Very unprofessional in the way she organized her lessons and her expectations were unobtainable.
Some of these reviews are a little over the top. Yes, her lectures are boring. She is a little scatterbrained so her lecture is all over the place. But the class is not that hard. Read the book, go to class, take notes, study. Tests do require some critical thinking and common sense but are manageab
The class was the hardest class I have had up until now, and I'm a Junior, and Biology is a 2000 level course.
She's a pretty clear instructor, although towards the end of the semester the material gets difficult. She knows what she's talking about, and will do her best to answer questions. She's from the North and tends to speak a little fast.
She does talk entirely too fast. Her test are really hard and her study guides don't help much because you don't really know what she wants out of a topic. Her test are multiple choice but all of the answers are too close. But nice.
She is a terrible professor!!! She cannot stay on one topic and writes the tests to where she can understand them but not any of her students. I will never take a class with her again!
her lectures are all over the place. her tests are insanely hard (about 60% of class dropped, if you made a B you were in the top 10%, majority of people that stayed mad a D or worse). she is very helpful IF you ask for help. She WILL help. I for one would NEVER want to take a class with her again. Cell bio will destory you if you don't study HARD.
Dr. countaway is a fantastic professor! Sure some of the areas are a bit difficult, but it is after all a college course. Spoon feeding... easy on the grades, not helpful! Some of us might like to work in the medical and scientific community when we grow up. It's nice to know that some professors actually make it necessary to study for a change.
This was the only F I made in my college career. I am a great student, I am now in Graduate School and I COULD NOT pass her class. Tests are outrageously hard, classes are completely boring, talks about things like you should have taken an "intro to cell biology" course.
I think she does a great job...I don't know why other people gave her such a bad rating. The people that gave her a bad rating are probably just lazy. If you try just a little bit, her class is easy.

if you want to be more enriched by self-study then this is the professor for you. She does not know chemistry very well, for students there should be a preq for CHEM I and II. Be prepared to read the textbook cover to cover atleast twice in order to make a descent grade. I talking "C."
she tells you everything. her teaching is clear. you do have to study if you hadnt had ap bio in high school if you had you will be fine. i took ap bio and without studying i am making a B.
She teachs very clear. However, she is very hard. Her test is horrible.
Her tests are very hard!! you really need to study for the class if you want a decent grade. She gives you everything you need to know but you still need to read the book twice! Shes nice and happy to help if you go to her office.
You really need to study all of the notes that she gives, and she gives a lot of notes. I really recommend you take another teacher. No extra credit, and if you mess up on 1 test you might as well drop the class.
This teacher is very difficult! Although she is nice and knows what she is talking about i dont think she knows how to teach it to students. She knows it but cant really make it clear to understand. She jam packs her tests and they are very hard. Be prepared to read the book and i mean all of it not just skim it or do the section reviews.
First test is very tough. Easier after that, but it still requires a lot of study time. Avg about 5 chapters per test. You better go to class if you want to do well. Very nice lady though.
Nice lady but very very hard... The tests were a killer... Good luck if you like to study study study!!
I made an A in BIO 1204 but came out with an 'F' in her cell bio class. The tests are not too hard but VERY tricky. No homework, no extra points, no attendance points, doesn't care if her students come to class or not, cuts off her students....Plus, she jumps from one thing to the other...no orderliness at all. No quiz or curves. Only hard tests!!!
If i went to hell tomorrow, i'd attempt to take her there with me. She is terrible. Pre-med and pre-dent students making A's in everything make c's and d's in this class. utterly ridiculous, avoid at all costs, or else. Don't say i didn't warn you!
I'm a pre-med student and I have an A right now. I made a 94 on the first test and a 98 on the second. She lets you debate questions. Must read the book in addition to going to class... Good luck!
This was a HARD class! She is nice, but her multiple guess test questions were either tricky or trivial. She replaced the lowest test grade with the final exam grade if you did better. Final was TOUGH! 92% on the final I'd get an A for the semester, 75% I'd get a C. Talk about stress! Studied for over 30 hours...got the A. Take ANYONE else!!!!!!
Her tests are killers. They are very tricky. She words them to where two or even three of the choices could be the answer. Nice person and teaches well. I would not take her again!
good at explaning complicated subjects. tests are a little tricky, but as long as you attend every class and pay attention you will get a decent grade. use the web tutorials.
AMAZING TEACHER! I even failed the first two tests and she helped me pass the class! very nice and will work with you outside of class. she is extremely intelligent and i will take her again for higher level classes.
She's a meany head! Don't take her!
I wouldn't recommend her at all. No denying her intelligence, but her tests are confusing, and she frequently said "Well, it made sense to me when I wrote the question." Study like crazy and hope you survive because you can never be sure what she wants. I breezed through 3/4000 BIO classes at the same time while struggling to stay afloat in hers.
She is incredibly smart and very nice. Her lectures are crystal clear. You will walk away from class completly confident and then fail the test. The tests are very confusing and a lot of times there is more than one correct answer. If you want to keep your GPA up do not take her. Again sheis a very good at teaching but her tests are aweful
Great lectures, but grading and textbook use is extremely insane. also the final is comprehensive and worth 40% of your grade. It has got to be the hardest class I have ever taken, but it was a little fun. She makes the class hard on purpose because she belives it will prepare students for medical school, so if your a pre med, take it and see.
Often says that she wants you to understood the broad concepts, but then tests you over minor details. When you study the minor details, she asks "critical thinking" questions, which make sense to her but have multiple answers that work. Poor prof who can't acknowledge her inability to teach the material. Assumes that its the students inability.
Took her for cell, failed. She did not teach and downed the book at every chance. Do not take her class. She will help you but it doesnt really matter because her tests are incomprehensible!!! I am a B student and she failed me. I studied my head off!
If you want to PASS Cell Biology, take another teacher. She's a nice person, but very scatterbrained. She gets confused if students ask questions. Tests are multiple choice with more than one correct answer. Tells you to study "main points" then tests over specific details. Talks way too fast. If at all possible, take another professor.
shes not the greatest teacher. shes def REALLY smart the bad thing is she KNOWS shes really smart. the material (pwrpt) is SO scattered so its hard to keep up. she moves very fast thru the material. the tests r hard. i didnt pass this class but then again i really didnt put that big of an effort bcuz i didnt like her.
VERY SCATTERBRAINED. Has the powerpoint talking about one thing while she writes on the board about another. Gives you enough time to glance at whats on the powerpoint before she changes it. doesnt answer questions and gets pissed when you ask. you pretty much have to teach yourself. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
I knew going into her class that it was going to be hard. It was! If you read and really try by doing the online help you will prob be ok. I have made an A on all the test except on which was a B. You have to have great study habits though..good luck. She was my fav teach since she actually made me study!
Very scattere when teaching, attendence is a MUST. One missed class can really set you back. Doesnt post anything on web, notes done via powerpoint/board. Doesnt let you ask questions. from the time class begins till class ends, its nonstop lecture. dont recommend
Attendance is not mandatory but if you even want a chance of passing it'd be smart to attend class every day. She talks so fast, while using the chalkboard and overhead. Her tests are extremely difficult! I would definitely not recommend her to anyone. I studied for hours every day and still failed. I had to drop!
Extremely smart lady, she is from the north so she is in warp speed all the time. Utilize as many modes of reference and fully, completly know the material in and out. Intelectual questions. Interesting class.
Dr. Countaway has a reputation for being pretty difficult. But she's not all that bad. She gives study guides for her tests. But those tests aren't just memorization; they require you to be able to use the information you've learned in class. But believe me, if you do well, you'll have earned your grade.
This class was probably the hardest class that I have ever endured. Dr. Countaway went way too fast over the material. None of the things we put down in our notes wasn't on our tests, and she didn't give us any idea as to what was going to be on the tests. She used powerpoints, and by the time you looked down to write on your paper, the material on
You have to work extra hard to pass her class...
Countawaway is a great professor. She may not be easy, but she does not have an easy subject to teach. You have to put in the effort to succeed in her class. She is very helfpul if you take the time to go to her office. I took her for bio 1204 and i look foward to having her for cell bio.
Prob. the most unclear teacher I've taken. Scatteredbrained and clueless. Don't take here if your interested in actually retaining the information. She will leave you scrambling to relearn what she screwed up in class. Her test are poor at best with 5-10% of her questions not being covered in class. Do Not Take This Professor! You have been warned!
She is an awful professor. She is very scatterbrained.. her notes are unclear and she bounce from one subject to another with no warning. everyone in my class was lost. Do NOT take her!
Man, I guess people on here are mostly lazy in cell bio. It is really not that hard. She does ask "critical thinking" questions that require you to predict an answer, etc. and doesn't give regurgitation-type questions. That being said, I thought she was great and if you work reasonably hard, you can get a good grade.
Countaway is a really hard professor. She is pretty scatterbrained and can be hard to follow at times, but for the most part, she's pretty good. But you have to work really hard to do well. Can't slack off in this course. She really does care about her students though, just go talk to her if you are struggling.
Hard but interesting. Worth the challenge.
If you're Pre-Med or bio major, TAKE COUNTAWAY! She is fantastic in preparing you for med school. If not, avoid her at all costs. Don't take her for General Bio.. she expects you to know way too much for a gen ed class. but if you're actually interested in bio or med school, she is great. Only take her if you're serious.
Her lecture contain a lot of extraneous information that she does not include on the test. The $250 book she ask you to buy, she doesn't use. The students entire grade is based on 4 test.
She was a wonderful professor. I received an A, but I did study quite a bit. She will definitely prepare you well, if you have an interest in a career in science. If you put in some effort you will pass this class.
Dr Countaway is very helpful if you go to outside of class. In class, talks extremely fast (bring a recorder), covers ALOT of material in a short period, and tests are extremely difficult (critical thinking type questions). Most of the class did not pass w/ only 3 tests for a grade. Extra Credit is not extra!
I don't condone rating professors horribly because of the difficulty of the class. Cell is not an easy class by any means, but Countaway is horrifically off base with her teaching vs. her tests. This class requires much more time than you would expect from a 2000 level course. Take Vaughan instead.
If you are like me and hate Biology and anything that has to do with Science, you will have a hard time in her class. She expects you to understand everything she's talking about. Her tests are based on her notes, but even after studting for hours I made a 78 on my first exam.
Tests have nothing to do with anything in the book; all lecture. Tests are ridiculously hard. I do not recommend this teacher for anything, has not patience and does not care if you learn the material or not.
You can tell she is really passionate about her career field... that being said, if you are not passionate about bio you will have a hard time. She doesn't give you a clue about what info will be on test.. basically 4 test make up your grade. Nice professor, but if you arent familiar with bio, I wouldn't advise taking her.
Do not take her if you have a choice. Cell is a hard class to take and she does not teach it well. Unless you can study for an hour everyday then do not even plan on making a good grade. The class average on most test was in the 60's. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CELL!!!
If you hate biology, don't take her. Lectures are boring, doesn't give study guides, your grade = 4 tests and some hw assignments. Attendence is not mandatory but DON'T skip and make sure you READ, READ, READ! She really wants students to understand and is very willing to answer questions. She is also super nice. Be warned, THIS CLASS IS NOT EASY!!
She makes you understand the information to do well on the tests, but you learn it well enough that you won't forget it later.
She is extremely scater minded! she will go off talking about something that you think is important for the test but come to find out it was just her going off about something she likes to talk about
I went to class everyday, went to student instructed (SI) sessions every time it was held and found this class incredible difficult. This professor is unorganized and very hard to understand. I usually don't write reviews for professors, however she's one of the worst I've ever had and feel the need to inform others about what they're getting into
This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. She is not an instructor that teaches and coaches. She should not even be in the profession of teaching because she is so impossible. Dr. Countaway is very unorganized. When you try to communicate with her she does not respond; if she does happen to respond she does not at all answer your q
Avoid at all costs, not a good teacher. Take someone else or go to a different school to take.
Her classes are fun and well taught. You just have to actually apply yourself in order to do well. Not studying, or cramming the night before, is a guaranteed F.
You have to study - oh no, shocker. Welcome to college. ABSOLUTELY do the Mastering Biology stuff - it'll save your life. You may have to study rigorously, but you'll come out of this class more knowledgeable than your fellow bio majs who had a professor they could snooze through and make an A.
This professor is IMPOSSIBLE! I usually do not write reviews but I feel the need to warn others. I studied for hours upon hours everyday and still received a bad grade in this class. She is very scatter minded and seems very lost in her lectures. Your whole grade is based off five test. Avoid at all cost!
Wow!Worst teacher ever. I have taken many, many college courses (139 hours) both in class and online. She is by far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. She doesn't care if you learn the material or not. She actually gave me 0 or answers I clearly got right because she didn't like me after I told her that her online class was disorganized.
She is completely biased, unorganized, and rude. She talks down to you. I never met such a teacher who treats her students the way she does. She has favorites. She seems to only like the ones who have previously taken her class. However, she does know cell and you can tell she loves it. She just can't teach.
She's a tough cookie. But if you take her notes, you'll have all you need to study for the exam. Its alot of material, but you retain that information and feel pretty grateful afterwards. She's awesome, love her boston accent
I took Dr. Countaway's Cell Biology class online and it is a complete nightmare. This teacher doesn't teach the material even tho she knows it, She seems to dislike all students that take the online class, and she makes the tests for the online class more difficult even tho you take the test on campus. The worst teacher ever! Do not take her!
Take her if you want to fail! I do not usually write on here, but I just want to warn you all. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Hardest calss I've ever taken. I would not recommend her class.
She is very scatter-brained. She is all over the place. She REFUSES to do test reviews or even tell you what to study for. DO NOT take her!! I'm usually an "A" student, but in this class... :(
I dont know why everyone hates her so much. Go to class take notes and study the notes, thats it. She only tests over the material she covers in class. If you dont understand her or she is going to fast tell her to slow down and she is perfectly okay with it. Tests are directly from what she says in class, its not that hard people, this is college.
The best biology teacher I've ever had!!!!!! This is the first teacher who has convinced me (through her teaching) that biology isn't just for people who can't handle the math of physics, chemistry, or engineering. It takes real dedication to understand the life sciences and this is the first teacher to prove that to me. Take the challenge!
This teacher made me a better biologist. I made a B in her class, but was okay with it. She is tough, but that is because she believes in pushing her students to reach their full potential. Janice is also one of the few instructors that I have ever had who treater me not like a child, but someone who would someday be her colleague.
She thinks everyone else is on her level, when we aren't. Her tests are impossible. If the class average is a 60 on all exams, it's the teaching. She said the textbook was wrong and not a good reference.... So how do you study for that!?
It's a hard class and the lectures are sometimes hard to understand. She knows a lot about the subject which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Easy to get lost but tests are only over stuff discussed in class. But I'm an A student and will be lucky to make a B in here.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This course was by far the hardest class I have taken. I would like to consider myself semi good at biology, but not in here. She is a very educated lady, and it shows, but she expects her students to know everything that she went to school for 10 years to learn. She needs to realize that this is a course for NON MAJORS.
This professor is the worst I have ever encountered. She is very educated in biology but expects her students to naturally be the same way. I would study study study and still make bad grades on the tests. They are absolutely impossible. The only manageable thing in this class is the homework. Do NOT take her.
Mrs. Countaway is a good teacher. She does expect a lot from her students but I got an A. Just go to class, pay attention, and study. Tests are tough but fair. There's only about one homework assignment per week and a couple of in class assignments. She's really not bad and is willing to help if you take the time to ask and participate.
Doesn't help at all. is non-cooperate , confuses herself and others. never answer your questions and emails. and is never available outside of class
This class was a very hard course to take. Her lectures were very descriptive but the tests never followed them. If you didn't already take this class before I wouldn't take it for your first bio course. The tests were difficult beyond belief and the material wasn't straightforward.
Janice is a very blunt professor. She is a tough grader, but if you show up and participate you will pass. She has a lot of online homework and has clear grading criteria. If you follow everything to a T you will pass.
She was tough but fair. If you pay attention and do the work, it's not a hard course.
Professor Countaway runs a challenging but rewarding course. Attend lectures, use the textbook, and try Unstuck ai for additional study prep - it really helped me stay on top of the material. With effort, this class is manageable and worth taking.
