fantastic prof: fair and really great at explaining difficult concepts. I learned alot.

potentially boring topic made interesting. She treats students like real people with ideas to share. Don't take the course if you are looking for an easy credit though - she expects you to work hard.

Professor Hill is the best professor I have encountered at York University yet. She is a rare and dying breed of prof at York, one who actually demands some effort from the students she teaches. Rather than being caught up in the usual tired tropes of York U (7th grade class presentations, glorified show and tell etc.), she actually -----cont...

cont...expects her students to do the work. There is no coddling, if you don't know how something, she expects you to figure it out...almost like it was a real university class (shock! gasp!). She comes to class prepared, makes it interesting and fun and expects the same level of work from you. She really engages her students. Amazing prof!

Unfortunately, with the 'high school' culture of York, a lot of students expect easy A's and bird classes, and mostly they will get that. Not with Jan. Sadly, her talents would be better utilized at a school like UofT, UBC, or McGill. Places that actually care about acadmic work and building strong students. One of the few great profs at York.

Jan Is Awesome! She is not a easy professor by any means but in her class you will actually learn the material and come out with a much better understanding. I am changing my major to SOC because of Jan's class. I see kids in my class complaining and I honestly want to punch the. This is University, Not High School! Love you Jan! # 1 Prof @ York!!!

She might be different at diff. classes, but I really enjoy her male/female relationships class. She is incredibly smart. She gives you marks with easy assignments and quizes. You have to attend class and read the course readings. You will do perfect without a question. Im getting A. She might expect more from 4th year students but not this class.

Prof Hill seemed a bit intimidating but as the course went along it wasn't all that bad. She's a great prof, very clear, the only down side was me and many of my class mates did not use our 2nd textbook at all. This is not a bird course therefore you will have to earn it, she may be hard but she's fair.

Jan is a power woman! She has brains, beauty, personality & her lectures I can't get enough of! Ppl making bad comments about what she wears- its normal clothes- get a life. Jan's always available after class & in office. She doesn't take sh*t from people. She lays out her academic expectations and if you do not follow it, you will not do well.

Extremely intelligent! Very helpful in teaching methods, but moreover, a TRUE LIFE MENTOR. Overcame hard-times with her suggestion and guidance. Highly recommended

Fantastic teacher !If you are at school to truly learn not only for GPA's then this is the class.

The professor makes coming to class and participating a part of the grade, for example if you stay during an entire film watched in class you could get a bonus point or sometimes she gave away exam questions that were going to be on the test. The class requires hard work, studying and showing up, but so worth it and the prof is super helpful/sweet.

Very knowledgeable and engaging. Loved the class. Tests were based off the textbook/videos watched, and her lectures veered away from the textbook, but still loved going to class. Wonderful prof and wonderful person. For those hating on her, grow up, this is Uni, not Elementary school. Jan is great.

Jan is a very interesting and engaging professor. The lectures didn't have much to do with the textbooks and the tests were based off the textbooks so you're on your own if you don't ask questions. She is so successful and so smart and a really great role model, I'd say.

Jan is an awesome professor.. the best I've had at York so far. For students who know how to think deeper and make an effort, she's perfect. She is the type of prof that makes you think about life in a more meaningful way. For those who don't listen and would rather have all assessment based on a textbook, she is definitely not for you.

Honestly, I don't know where all of these negative reviews are coming from. I think she is amazing. She's sweet, kind, funny, and helpful. She's knowledgable about soci & the body. She makes an effort to explain concepts & link concepts together. She was away for some lectures due to illness - not her fault - PEOPLE GET ILL IN LIFE. It happens!

She is the real deal, meaning that if one is truly at university to learn and has a sincere curiosity regarding the material then she is phenomenal. She wants you to be critical, engaged and use your own ideas in interpreting the material. She is not interested in you being a zombie that simply memorize the material. Great person and teacher!

U r going to learn a lot at her class. Her classes are fun & u'll enjoy her style of teaching " she is not boring at all" But you need to give her a good paper... so if u are just lazy or always high then this is not a good class for you. But if u r going to make notes at her classes and follow her directions for the assignments it would an easy A.

LOVED HER. I'm in the final year of university at York and can easily say she was my favourite prof. If you show her that you're interested, participate when you can and attend class - she will love you and that will reflect on your grades. Not to mention she is a ball of energy and one of the most positive human beings ever! You wont regret it.

The most incredible professor. I don't understand the low ratings! Perhaps many first year students expecting an easy class? You will have to work for your grade but you will learn so much.

In the middle of a term in this class, it's March 5th 2018 and CUPE union is now on strike and we still do not have a single grade from this class back yet. The prof promised to post them by the end of day yesterday and nothing. Now they are on strike. I don't think she ever intended to post them. Otherwise, I love her lectures, interesting class.

Dr. Hill does not have an outline but her lectures are interesting. Make sure to read the given material as most if not all of the assignment content is based off of the texts. Given the fact that this course was given to her at the very last moment to teach, she had great passion teaching it and made the class as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Interesting and knowledgeable prof who's quite caring.

She is very informative and nice. Her lectures are very interesting. I don't understand why she got low rates, but she has one problem, you can't reach her, she doesn't reply to emails.

All the lectures were online (summer course) with her uploading the lectures to watch at your leisure. Her explanations and coverage of course material was excellent. She's a solid professor and would take a course with her again. Do the work, attend tutorials to receive a good grade.

There is a lot of writing to do. However she acknowledges this and it does help you become a faster/better writer. A descent amount of reading to do as well. However if you are interested in the topic you will learn so much. I loved her lectures as well as her combination of textbook and other materials (TED Talks, etc.).
