The material is interesting. She shows great films. She's a good one, just not too helpful to her students. She doesn't show up on movie/test days either.
The material is largely common sense, and it is impossible to pay attention in class.

She's unapproachable in a weird way. Classes are usually interesting, once in a while dull. Her class is one of my favorites because she lets people talk and doesn't just lecture. Okay class, she's not all that available.
easy with no homework
TERRIBLE!
Took 2: "religious right" & "sex, gender & the law". Loved her. Don't be scared by the sylabus the 1st day. It's to scare off students. In both classes she reduced the work load a few weeks after add/drop.Great discusions. Will help u
This class was boring and wasn't that impressive. The information presented was kind of bland and dull. The only good thing about this class was that you didn't have to buy a book...
Class Sucks....She has awful TA's who are on power trips. Class would be easy if she could relay info in here lectures. Worst class I have had here. If one is going to take Sociology 103 take it with someone else.
The class was very easy and basic, as long as you went to lectures, the tests were easy. The final was optional, which is always a plus. She is passionate and very clear.
she is very interesting to listen to. if u go to all the lectures u will get a good grade. readings aren't hard either. alot of ink tho.
terrible class dont take it with her. she is a snob and her TA's are terrible just like her. the class is so boring and tests are very hard
Easy, but ya she's kind of scary to talk to in a weird way.
If you enjoy taking pointless, difficult exams, and writing papers that get hacked up, take it. She and her TA's all have their noses in the air...on a power trip, all in all the worst class i've taken.
interesting to listen to in lecture. go to lectures and get a good grade in class
Interesting material but what she says is right no questions asked. She is kind of stuck up.
Go to class and you are golden... very easy and interesting... you dont really ahve to do the readings if you go to class because we talk about them.
Worst class ever. So boring. TA's are very unfair and don't explain grading. The material is unimportant. I kicked myself everyday for not dropping this class
what a snob. the class is wicked tough and the TAs suck. so not helpful whatsoever. I hate myself for not dropping this class. It may be interesting material, but the exams are really tough.. i dont care how good of notes you take.
Hated this class. Unfair TA's who were far from helpful when asked for advice. Avoid this class if possible.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. I went to almost every class, did the readings, and still didn't do well on the tests. She is an awful teacher, and it's hard to even pay attention in such a boring class.Don't take classes with her!
Worst class ever. This woman is a true beast. Her feminist liberal propaganda tromps all over the true purpose of the class. Dont ever take one of her courses. She stole far too many hours of my life away, and I want them back damnit. P.S I got an A.
Interesting everyday topics discussed. Prof. Irvine is very passionate about the material she teaches. She is also a great resource and always makes herself accessible. You have to be open to new ideas, but don't be afraid to challenge her thoughts...!
She made it clear she wasn't going to tolerate disrespect but it ended up getting in the way of the class. She would embarass students in the middle of class, interrupting it. Her lectures were all over the place, making it very hard to follow.
she may be the worst teacher ever. the material seems to be interesting but she ruins it. take this class, with a different teacher
I'm not sure why everyone has put up bad comments, the class is insanely easy. I could have never showed up to the class before, and I would have aced the first exam, it's all just common sense. The second exam deals more with the readings, but just read the readings, and it's a piece of cake.
Do the readings and attend lectures, take good notes easy A, like me. Another good hint Irvine has a policy that you cannot have the test papers; only answer sheets, reason to that is figure a way to sneak all test papers and review answers, guranteed the same questions will be on the final = easy A
READ and take lots of notes. Pretty boring class but easy if you do the reading.
Go to class, read the materials an you will surely ace the course. It's easy, interesting and enjoyable!
She has a general policy that work cannot be made up, regardless of the circumstances. Despite violent illness, she wouldn't let me make up my work, and I failed the class, even when I had the work done. She was completely unwilling to help me when I asked her, too.
Professor Irvine explains social concepts in a very clear direct manner. She is very kind and approachable to ask questions, or raise new points. Also not a heavy workload. Short readings, Multiple Choice tests, and a (incredibly short) final. A great way to satisfy a genEd requirement.
Very dry. Interesting topic, but not well taught. Tests are somewhat easy and are based on readings and notes from class. Not recommended, but not a horrible class.
i don't understand what people are complaining about..go to class and just take notes. the exams come right off the notes, verbatim. don't need to print lecture readings if you go to class and listen. had to write 3 5-page papers..not too hard. Good professor! I would recommend.
Horrible class, poor teaching. Cancel review sessions because she believed not enough students came to this tue thur 8am class. Wouldn't accept a late paper with legit documented excuses.
WORST CLASS
test are hard and unfair. shes not helpful..canceled review sessions even though i went to every 8am class..i never missed one..thats pathetic. shes not willing to help students that go to every class, PATHETIC
People who complain here are crazy - this class is interesting and fun.
UMass is so lucky to have this prof. She is amazing. Lectures are great - her books are great. Hot hot HOT. She is a thinker - you'll definitely learn from her.
Don't take this class. The readings were so hard to get through and the exams were ridiculously hard. The only reason why I passed (with a CD!) was because I did well on the papers.
She's great. Very interesting and ready to educate. The class is pretty easy too and the test comes right out of the notes.
HORRIBLE class!!! TA's suck! (esp Rachel...avoid at all costs!) seems like such an interesting class, but it is such a let down! sooo much reading, exams are awkward and tricky! horrible class, dont take it!
Good teacher, knows her stuff and encourages class participation-maybe too much. people had too much to say and class was a waste of time except to get the notes. tests/papers are really easy. overall ok class, but if you get fed up with not-so-smart students saying unnecesary things-dont take it.
She is hysterical, and makes all the material really interesting and relevant. I met with her outside of class and she was happy to suggest extra readings. She's fabulous.
i took 103 in the fall and loved it so much i took 107. they are virtually the same class with very similiar readings. i feel like half the class time is like a combination of maury and judge judy. entertaining and simple.
Not a bad class, but the lectures are boring and tedious. You have to write 1 or 2 papers. Not hard to do well in if you attend the lectures or do the readings.
this class was insanely easy. 3 multiple choice exams and 1 paper to write. the final writing assignment was only 6 questions. she let's you drop your lowest grade. the lecture were somewhat interesting and no textbook, just readings on e reserve
most ANNOYING person i've met at umass. loves to cause unnecessary arguments in class, just to get a rise out of people(VERY annoying) she also tends to bash our generation. irvine tries to make herself seem better than everyone in the class. the way she speaks is intolerable. 5 assignments.(3tests,2writings.lowest score dropped). lots of reading
her teaching methods did not work for the size class that she was teaching. she seemed to shoot down any opposing opinions and seemed quite ****
In my three years at umass i have got nothing below an A-, except for my C in her class. She is not only the worst professor that I have ever had, but also the worst person that I have ever met. I am still scarred by having to listen to her monotonous voice for 90 minutes.

DO NOT DO NOT take this course early in the morning, like me at 8 in the morning. You will sleep through it, not go, or be bored out of ur mind. Her voice and tone of voice will put u right to sleep. Soo boring
pretty boring. i had class at 8 in the morning, and she has a very dull voice. she is kinda odd. likes to talk about masterbation just for fun. people in the class are generally retarted, but somewhat amusing. i did not enjoy class. but, really, irvine is not all that bad. shes not very good, but she isnt as horrible as some people were saying.
Proffesor Irvine is an extremely narrow minded and ignorant woman who is more interested in forcing her political oppinions on other people then teaching the subject matter. She does not listen to opposing opinions, and is quite possibly the most ignorant person i have ever come into contact with.
Make no mistake, slackers don't do well in this class (maybe where the negativity is coming from?), but it is interesting and thought-provoking. And her voice is dreamy.
I liked her class! people who made these comments are more close minded than she is! I thought her class was interesting and in fact, i liked it enough to wake up at 8 and go every time. Her tests were super easy and the papers werent too bad...id highly recommend it.
This woman should NOT be teaching at 8am. She's a sleeper, makes it nearly impossible to stay focused on the subject. TA's were horrendous, especially with grading the papers.
This class was extremely easy if you go to class. There were not that many class notes and everything that were in the notes were on the exams, honestly you don't even have to do the readings. The papers were graded hard but if you go to the TA's they will help you out.
prof irvine has a hard time keeping students awake. some parts of class were interesting, others were not.
Some of the subject matter was interesting, however, it would be more interesting if Irvine didn't teach it. Her class was really boring, she's a rude woman who's full of herself (I don't know why considering her yuppy appearance). There was only one helpful TA, the rest were useless. In brief, decent subject, terrible teaching.
some part of the class was kinda boring, LOTS of readings, Long readings, but kinda interesting. test are LONG but EASY!! review helps
Class is ridiculously easy. She does get mad, though, when people walk out in the middle of class. If you take good notes, you will do fine on all tests and papers.
This class is very easy but also interesting. I had it at 8 am and she managedto keep me awake and interested in the material. Just go to class and you will do fine.
Awesome class; easy, interesting and engaging even at 8:00 A.M.
Nice person, boring class. dont take her class at 8 in the morning, you will never go because you'll just fall asleep in class. But somewhat interesting and i would have enjoyed it if it wasent so early
Sooooooooooooooooo easy !!!!! I never go to class i've been like 4 times and have always fallen asleep and i still get A's on the test even though i don't know the material. it's all common sense.
miserable
If you like listening to a mono-tone voice at 8 am, like to fail papers because the professor didnt stick to their guidelines on grading and take tests with impossible answers then take this class....otherwise it's awful. She's never clear or engaging.
i found her to be incredibly full of herself and reluctant to help students or answer certain questions. the tests arent hard but you may end up failing because you couldnt manage to stay awake in class
i hated this class not even because it was at 8am but that it was so boring and impossible to pay attention to...her voice is so monotonous and theres no book or notes online so if you dont go to class and take notes then you wont pass. the reviews are no help bc whenever people ask her to review a term shell just say we talked about it in class.
I think the honorable Janice Irvine should be recruited by medical researchers because nobody in this class suffers from insomnia, not when she speaks.
went to the class about 5 times, got a 90. very easy but wayy too boring to actually go.
Lectures are interesting to attend if your open to objective social critics. Work load is fair. One five page paper, one in class writing in last class. Three multiple choice tests. TA's do all grading It helps to visit them once or twice. No books to buy!
easy professor, no need to do the readings, exams are really easy if you pay attention. some questions tha aren't on the exams are in readings. still got at least a B average on the exams. but doesn't help students when in a jam.
Class is incredibly easy, but incredibly irellevant. Exams make absolutely no sense, and are contradictory and vauge. The Professor and TA's seemed generally unwilling to offer assistance, and didn't return E-mails, even though they listed their addresses on the syllabus. Absolutely no feedback on papers or exams. Overall, a very frustrating class.
This class was way too early and Prof Irvine made the class dull. It is very easy though and she scales the grades at the end. Dont expect help cause you wont get it
This class was awful. Her voice is monotonous, and the class was at 8am. Bad combination. I found it hard to care about the class, so eventually I just stopped going, and showed up only for tests. I never did any of the reading. Despite all that, I got a C.
it's overall a good class even if you do not have any interest in sociology. it's a good GEN ED. there's no book assigned for this class. every reading is on e-reserves. the test are easy to pass as long as you go to your lecctures and do some of the readings. there is no book to buy. the reading load is heavy , but not that bad. don't take class@8
Don't take this class if it's even remotely difficult for you to get up early. The class was interesting for about one day, and then it got very boring. The exams were confusing. There's 3 multiple choice tests, and 2 in-class writing tests, and the lowest grade is dropped. The writing tests were graded very unfairly.
Q:What is an easy Gen-Ed? A: Janice Irvine Soc class.
easy class, but suuuuper boring. the readings on ereserves are awful, but thats probably just because im totally uninterested in sociology. this was my first college course, and it was not a good starting course! she's not great.
Material is pretty interesting, however, Dr. Irvine is one of the most condescending and rude teachers I have ever encountered. Ask for any help and she will immediately make you regret it so make yourself a friend in class to talk to. You teach yourself all material through the readings. She is literally useless.
Online course - 287: Sexualities and Society The course content is incredibly interesting and relevant - and the topics are 'fun' while still being challenging and educational. Prof. Irvine grades your Discussion Posts/Final Project and a TA grades film analyses papers. Both give great feedback. Also, no strict deadlines, which was a godsend.
