Approachable, communicative, she'll do her best to open your mind. Picks texts w/great clarity of content. Easy-going and informal small grp discussions good way to start am.
Pretty good teacher, I like how different her class was. Good course project, I thought it was going to be really difficult at first, but it turned out to be really fun!
i had 4 classes with her and she is great! she is such a people person... never intimidating, very approachable. It does not matter if you learn fast or slow, she will help you if you let her know that you need help...
Very nice teacher. She encourages you a lot with the big project. The project seems scary but it's not too bad. Make sure to take good notes...they are helpful on the quizzes. Oh, and she's very easy to talk to also!
I hated this class so much. She never "taught" anything. Just talked about herself if you want to learn anything valuble take this class with Wright or anyone else for that matter. Test questions all direct quotes from book-- FILL Up about 20000
She never seemed interested in what she was talking about, so it was hard to want to learn about it.
If you want to learn in this class, then you will. If you slack, then you won't. Easy as that! She's a great professor to know because she's so open-minded and loves to conversate and is very encouraging.
She’s so laid back which is cool because Sociology can be a very sensitive subject matter. She’s extremely intelligent and the only bone I have to pick is her final exam, which is hard to study for because some of the questions are direct quote fill in the blanks
WORST class I've ever taken. Open Minded?!?! This woman is so stuck on herself it's unreal. What she says is right, period. Sometimes I thought death was a better option than listening to her talk about her "neighborhood" and how "urban" she is. If you want to learn the subject STAY AWAY from Milner
Strange lady. Seems to try and prove that she's smart, but she's no smarter than her dogs she always talked about.
A lot of today's problems in society are due to LACK of understanding of minorities and vice versa. This class will DEFINITELY open your mind to things that most people DON'T know about the history of this country, the people living in it, and the poeple running it.
I loved this class. I loved the group discussion and the class project. I would recommend everyone taking this class with her, she makes it interesting, and fun. She opens your mind, and makes you look at life a little closer. Take good notes, and go to classes though not an easy A, but worth the work.
I took minorities and families in crisis from her. she is really nice and makes a lot of good points. one thing about her class is that u definetly need to take really good notes from the book, any movies she shows, and a few things from lecture. MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE: take good notes
I took this class with an open mind. Overall she cannot teach soc. You do need to take notes in her class to pass, thats PASS..... I have been taking notes and am lucky to be getting by with a C. She geats off the point very easily, in her lectures she reads directly from the book. shes libril, jewish, and wont stop talking about them both.
I have found that some students love her, while others hate her. This was the first class I had ever taken in college and she was great! She really helped give me hints to succeed in college & also helped my motivation! Anyone who doesn't like her, or says she's hard just doesn't try or is not that respectful. Show interest, try, and show up!!!
She is awesome, her dog is cute, too! This was the first class I took and i never regretted it. she is a great teacher who challenges you to think. Also, she lets you use notes on the tests!
her classes involve a lot of dicussion/her yapping on but the good thing is that you can use all your notes on the test. take very good notes! i just took mine during class while she was lecturing though so i didn't have almost any outside homework, unless i skipped class, of course! the key is to take very good notes!
teacher is bias and extreemly opionated.
I would discribe her as a mediocre teacher. She wasn't wonderful, she wasn't horrible. Some days were better than others. Overall, a fairly boring class, but if you take really good notes and do your field exercises it's a pretty easy class. I ddin't mind the class.
nice lady, gives you the time of day. writes small on the board so bring glasses.
Milner is the worst instructor I have ever encountered. She babbled about non-related topics. Mainly about herself. She was unprofessional to say the least, she usually looked as if she just crawled out of bed.
THE worst teacher! Talks about her, her, and her. Wanders off topic completely. Tells you what will be on the test, but it's not and it's something totally different. DO take copious notes for the tests and they might help. LOTS of essay questions on tests.
She has no concept of staying on topic. If you are looking to not have much to do in her class, just distract her.
she is the worst prof I have ever had. She is very unorganized, rude, and uninformed about the current issues in her own feild. if you have the option please do not take her. Her class is not bad but as a human being she sucks!!!!!!!!
She was an awful teacher, never posted grades an told me I was getting an A then at the end of the semester I ended up with a C. Always talked about herself and was totally opinionated. I would not reccomend her to anyone, a total waste of time and money.
Excellent teacher. Clearly communicated what would be expected before each exam. If you are open minded, you will do well. Very satisfied.
Took Race and Ethnicty class over summer. 6 weeks is 2 short 4 this class. U MUST attend every class, take a LOT of notes, as we were allowed 2 use on tests. She talks about her family more than I care & goes off subject often. Lots of essay ?'s on tests. This class was hard, I learned a lot. Want 2 learn TAKE her, want 2 buy ur grade DON'T!!
Honestly, she's not that hard. Sit in the FRONT ROW so she know who you are... The quizzes are OPEN NOTES. NO TESTS. one paper due at the end of the semester, about 10 hours you spent at a site (mostly coffee shops) EASY high grade
I find Dr. Milner to be an interesting and intelligent woman, but her distractability is easily picked up on and frequently exploited by students. Most days I don't want to go to class, I'd rather get the notes from someone else, I paid to learn about soc, not to avoid learning by getting the class to ramble on about whatever comes to mind.
Had taken a class with her previously and enjoyed it. She was a completely diff teacher this time around. She missed a total of 6 of our classes, sometimes with no warning. No papers just tests. Open notes, but extremely long!! NO joke!! She's was just a lazy pig this time around.
Very Boring. Only graded on tests and are VERY VERY LONG! Take A TON OF NOTES! I HAVE A 5 SUBJECT NOTEBOOK AND TOOK UP 3 OF THEM FOR ONE EXAM FULL OF NOTES. SHE IS NEVER ON TOPIC AND NEVER LEAVES HER STOOL. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! BORING OLD VIDEOS POINTLESS GUEST SPEAKERS. VERY RUDE TEACHER. EVERYONE LAUGHS AT HER. KINDA FUNNY AND SAD LOL
took intro soc with her roughly 3 yrs ago, fall sem, and thought she was a fair teacher. liked her class and really enjoyed the subject as well as the assignments - which included some observation-based papers. I believe, as any good professor, she encourages and supports students as long as they put forth at least an adequate effort.
She is extremely intelligent and if by the off chance you are actually talking about sociology in class, it shows. Unfortunately, time spent on the subject in class is rare. Homework is chapter after chapter. So if you dont mind that- she'd be a good option. If you rely on lecture and in class discussions- I wouldn't suggest her.
Take good notes from text, you can use them for quizzes. Gets off subject easily which can be irritating since you spend $ to take this class. Easy class though as long as you do the assigned reading and take good notes.
Nice lady but goes off topic a lot. Very boring class and not helpful at all. she seem lazy and doesn't really wanna help students. Very bias in her view. Thinks she smart because she got phd as she will mention thru out class. She can make you feel very stupid. Plz don't take her classes....terrible teacher n unorganize....
Pretty nice lady, but DOES get off topic a lot. You need to take notes on the lectures, but it's difficult to tell what's important. Books are definitely a necessity if you hope to pass all quizzes.
Great lady! A bit old fashioned but knows her stuff and is extremely intelligent! Take sociology during the summer and it's a breeze as long as you show up for class because most of her quizzes are on her lecture. There are only 7 quizzes in the summer and you may use your notes. Last day of class she bought us pizza and gave us 10 extra credit poi
She is really unorganize, tlaks about herself and her life only. She never write much on the bored but just sit in front of the class yapping about her. She never post your grades up on D2L, she never replys to email, and cannot be reachable at all. Don't take her class, plain and simple if you don't want to waste money. IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY, her
She really is not a bad teacher at all. You have 11 20pt quizzes and she takes the top 10 scores. Just take good notes (all open note tests) she usually picks very obvious things from the text on the quiz. There is always 3-5 random bonus questions she puts on the board. I would reccommend taking her.
She is not a good teacher. She spends most of the class time talking about something completely off topic. Missing any class can completely wreck your semester because she has no schedule. She is very unorganized and impossible to reach. Her quizzes are open note but it's very difficult to be prepared. She picks completely random questions.
Milner was alright. She was extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter itself, but had no idea how to teach it. She used other lecturers and videos to do her job for her. Not an easy A, but an interesting class.
Professor Milner did an exceptional job of setting expectations and teaching & testing accordingly. I learned a great deal; and found that attending every lecture, taking effective notes as well a few hours several times a week studying the course material made it a surefire A. She is passionate about her subject and that means a lot.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Dreaded coming to class everyday. All she did was play videos and eat in front of the class as we were expected to take detailed notes because some of the material could "show up on our exams" which they did not. Also her exams were never really scheduled, and the questions were random. Do not take this class!
Wonderful teacher, great class. Dr. Milner really knows her stuff!
I took this class during the summer, and I loved it. Milner can be a little scatter brained, and there is a lot of reading involved. For the most part, it is a pretty laid back class. There are lots of interesting discussions, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Read the material, show up and participate - you'll be fine.
Just write vocab from the book, never read a whole chapter. Never home work just tests weekly, no mid term no final
pretty good teacher, class was interesting when students got involved but she tends to get off topic alot. doesnt take attendance but i went anyways. 11 quizzes, she drops 1 at the end and the questions are straight out of the books. you HAVE to do the homework though. take REALLY good notes on them and you will do great. i almost got 20 on all
She's late almost everyday. She just shows videos. Shes hard to pay attention to when she actually tries to teach. No homework. But I dread this class either way. If your thinking about sociology of race than dont do it with this teacher. She was sick one day and had another teacher just come in and turn on a video, so everyone in class just left.
Bad teacher. Took this course in the summer 2011. Class is a lectured course (She sits in a chair and lectures). Take notes on definitions. Open notes test. Tests can be hard because of lack of clarity of information.
I thought she was a very interesting teacher. She is ALWAYS telling stories to help you understand the topics. She knows what she is talking about, and if you sit in the front, take good notes, get involved with convos, you will have no problem getting an "A" in this class.
Some people said they didn't like her, but I did.
Easy easy easy teacher and definitely knows what she's talking about. Just read the text book, take notes (quizzes are open notes) and pass the quizzes and you'll ace the class no problem. Highly recommended.
Super helpful. Loves to chat about her family. Easy tests (open notes) She tells you ahead of time when the quizzes will be. The only thing I would have to say is sit close because she tends to mumble during her lectures.
Horrible teacher. Just read from the book, but the tests were a different version of what the book says so you get it wrong. She constantly says Um and the only nice thing is it is open note tests. She tells you when the tests are, but she will just change it if you miss a day, EXTREMELY unorganized. Would not recommend her to anyone.
talks a lot but it come straight from the book. She talks quietly and slowly. Found her lectures boring
She only does 11 test an no homework, just readings from txt but if your bad at test taking she does let you use notes. You never really know what to expect on test.
My favorite teacher. Yes she does get off topic but its a 3 hour class and its good to have some conversation in class. She was always helpful, never late for my class, take good notes, read the chapters, and show up then you will pass with flying colors. I enjoyed her very much!!!
Great teacher. This is the second time I've taken a class with her. I enjoy the way she lectured and she was very up to date on the topics we covered. When you're done with her class you will most definitely be more aware of what is going on in our society and societies around the world. I think she is a great teacher and would recommend her class.
Great teacher if your there to learn. Lectures and class material are basic and easy to grasp. Peolpe who have the capacity to take decent notes( not write down every word in the book) will likely find the work load to be reasonable for an intro course.
She's a pleasant woman and I like her. But, her way of thinking is the ONLY way. Seems to forget that science disproves itself every 50 years or so.
She is a very knowledgeable professor but she likes to ramble so it is hard to stay focused. You watch a lot of videos and she likes to talk through them so you need to find them online and watch them again if you want to do well. She gives you study guides for the exams and you can use notes on the exams so if you do bad in her class you're lazy.
Milner drifts to and from topics constantly. There isn't a real connection between lectures and test questions due to the fact she rants(off topic) too much. Lectures start on topic then devolve quickly to personal life stories or aged beliefs on topics.
She was horrible. Her way of thinking is the only way of thinking. She won't see others views. Her test are more about punctuation and spelling- acted like english class. Her statistics were wrong due to being outdated. I would never suggest her for anythng ever. She trails off topic constantly and can't follow along in class.
Grades were based off of 11 quizzes, so there were no large exams or projects. Everything that I learned was from textbook readings, since her lectures were more like rambles that were irrelevant to material. However, she did give extra credit opportunities on every quiz.
Horrible professor that I would not recommend to anyone. She sits in the front of the class and talks about completely irrelevant things that aren't on the quizzes and is not helpful or kind at all. Don't think it's an easy class though, she makes it horribly difficult to pass and you leave the course with no gained knowledge.
Just take notes during lecture and take notes from book exactly as she wants you to. You can use notes on quizzes and there are no big exams. Read + listen + take good notes = A
Took this class for summer, a 6 week, there were plenty of reading, two books, and 11quiz, no exam, no essay, open note on quiz, sometimes can be confusing, and tricky recommend taken fall or spring,
Rambles in front of room about irrelevant things. If you have an issue with a grade, you will have to wander the halls to find her because she will not answer her phone or emails. She is definitely not up-to-date with the technology...
I honestly don't know what's going through this woman's mind when she lectures. I mean, some teachers go on tangents, but this was the single most worthless, rambling, utter waste of my time. I, no joke, did not learn a single thing about sociology. Not a thing. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER unless you're ready to shoot yourself.
she is very interesting in my opinion.
Janice Milner comes off tough, but will help you if you are struggling. Her lectures are long but helpful, and remember to take notes from the book, really helpful!
She is a tough grader, quizzes and tests are also graded on proper grammar and spelling. Her lectures are very very long, and include random none relevant topics. If you ask her to talk about the up coming test, she will talk about her past, including her daughter and her cat. She is a very nice women, but a terrible professor.
Very liberal. Hard to understand, says um every other word. Must Read the book and get tested on something to totally different without notice. Likes to play the poor me screwed on how the world screwed her over and your going to feel it too. Also have to visit the bad part of Minneapolis and ride the city bus down there. Avoid her at all cost.
Professor Milner is a really nice lady, and she will help you if you ask. Her lectures are always off topic and she has a very one sided opinion on everything. her class included four exams with no homework. exams are all essay format with fill in the blank questions. You will do plenty of reading for the class.
hard to know when she is just rambling or actually lecturing. watch a lot of movies that you have to take notes on everything in the movie for her test. test are mostly essay and fill in the blank. she is very devoted to her work just not very good at passing it along to the student. also has mandatory field trip that you have to go on for final.
Interesting on how she see's the world. Stick to the anything that has more than one example or reason or answer. Also, the chapter review comes in handy.
She's a nice professor! exercise chapter review.
Janice is a talker, attendance is not mandatory but you need to take notes. You can use your notes on quizzes. No final. Straight forward class.
Great Speaker
Janice Milner is a nice lady, but very monotone, making lectures really difficult to pay attention to. She gets off track from the course material often, talking about her family and personal life. Seems fairly passionate about sociology, but I didn't learn much from her.
Boring but EASY! Don't have to go to class, just read your textbook and take super good notes and take the quizzes (she does not make up quizzes so make sure to show up to class when its a quiz day!
She is very hard to hear and her lectures go on and on and go away from the subject we are talking about. Watch your spelling!
Truly the worst class I have ever taken. I honestly thought blooper cameras were going to pop out and announce that this teacher was a joke. She is horrible!! You cant understand her at all during lecture, and when you can she goes completely off subject. If you want to get what you paid for out of Sociology DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Milner was not a very good professor. It was an easy class, 11 quizzes worth 20pts. each, and the lowest score dropped. Her lectures were always going off on tangents and she ended up one day ranting for 30 minutes (out of a 75 minute lecture) about how the only coffee that deserves to be coffee is black coffee, not the fancy Starbucks drinks.
Very biased. Lectures straight from the text.
Easiest class you can take. She has a lot of knowledge in sociology and can answer anything for you. I took Soc Of Race and Ethnicity with her also and it was another easy A. Only thing you are graded on in this class is the tests, WHICH YOU CAN USE YOUR NOTES ON!!!!! Incredibly easy and interesting course
Her class is really self-explanatory. She will usually show PBS films in her classes to demonstrate what exactly she is talking about when it comes to race and ethnicity. Stay up with current events/notes will be helpful on quizzes. Lectures will feel long if no one participates. If the class is fun/engaging, she will be fun.
I really liked Prof. Milner. If you pay attention, go to class everyday, take notes and skim the text you will get an A. She was super understanding about test accommodations and during the mandatory field trip our class bonded and things got easier and more interesting. Long lectures but she knows her stuff and can be funny :) Give her a chance!
Janice was a wonderful lady. She had very interesting stories to tell and lots of insight about gender studies. Throughout the entire semester, there were two written assignments, and that was all that went into the grade book. Easy enough, but be ready to have group discussions every day.
Graded us on six tests, gave us 2-3 chapters and 2-4 "readings" to read for each one. No consistency in what she wanted us to know from the textbook and reader. Normally 1 or 2 readings weren't even on the test. So she wasted our time by making us read and memorize useless information. Lectures, she goes off on long useless rants. DO NOT TAKE.
Very biased and has no problem pointing out who is doing well and who is failing. If you have opposing views she will inform you that you are an idiot and wrong because she doesn't agree with you. Has you read chapters that she doesn't even have on the tests as well. Lectures are horrible to sit through, long rants about her family or Starbucks.
Horrible teacher. Awful lectures. Quizzes asked random questions and had no consistency. Some of the required readings were NOT on any of the quizzes. Lectures will put you to sleep and the information we are meant to learn during a lecture is hidden in biased and self-centered rants. If you have an opposing opinion on anything, don't say anything.
Difficult class to sit through to say the least. She is very knowledgeable about sociology but often goes off on tangents and talks about her life a lot for half the class time. Falls behind syllabus schedule because of that and rushes everything at end of semester. No exam, only quizzes that are fill in the blank and they are open notes.
Lectures are very boring. If you read the textbook and take good notes you will do good on the quizzes. The only good thing about the class is that the only thing you get graded on is the 11 quizzes that you take and then she drops your lowest score. Other than the readings you don't have outside homework or any exams.
The lecture do get lengthy, and sometimes repetitive, however she knows what she's talking about. For essays, she lets her students write about how the material makes them think and feel, which was really interesting. The easiest way to fail the class is not participate, and don't take notes. Although it was unorganized at times, I would recommend.
I did not know anything about sociology coming in, and when I came out, I still felt that I did not know much. Her problem was that her lectures came straight from the book. Seriously, all you have to do is read the book and show up for quizzes; she offers very little that the textbook does not. Also, it is too easy. Quizzes are open notebook.
Lazy teacher always sitting down. Lectures are boring as hell. Half of the time she is talking about her hometown and how she was raised in the middle of nowhere.
She talks a lot, often rambles about non correlating things to what we're learning. graded on 10 quizzes(11 in total but she drops the lowest score). Quite boring overall. For the most part you won't even have to show up to class as long as you do the reading, take notes and take the quizzes.
She rambles a lot but is a great teacher, she knows what shes talking about. Just go to class and write down what she says bc quizzes are open note and she drops the lowest score!
I am currently taking this class and it's the easiest class I have ever taken, she is soooo nice. All you need to do to pass this class is show up and take good notes! Read the chapters she tells you to read and also make sure to get all the bonus question! I've been getting an average of 22/20 for every quiz. She is super funny with great stories!
If youre lookin for a typical idea of professor, this is not the class for you. She sits down & kicks her feet back & just basically talks to the class. IF you read and take notes on it and the lectures youll clearly get an A as you can use them on quizzes which are the only graded things. Come to class cuz she puts bonus questions on the test
Janice's tests were what you're mostly graded on. Her tests are all open note so that helped. There are some videos that you need to take note on that you'll also be tested on. She's a really nice person. She does go off track with her personal stories a lot.
Everything take her class you want regret it.
She is an inspiration. She taught me how to take notes and do well in college.
