She is extremly unaporachable, and her teaching style is as boring as it gets, and extremly unclear. She uses power point that does not actually demonstrate anything. AKA she rambels on and on about nothing imoprtant. If you are intrested in psyc dont take her class.
Thought I wanted to be a psychology major, until i took her class.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!! You will do poorly and hate everything linked to psyc. I even liked it before. If you have to take this course take it with the other guy... He sounds good.
She is so bad it is not funny. Her tests are as hard as she is boring. Switch out of her class even if you have to change your entire schedule. YOU WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER!
This professor is horrible, it feels as though your right back in high school, she stops her lessons to complain when one of her 140 students are quietly talking. She doesn't seem to know much about the subject, she takes everything directly out of the book. The overhead notes are unhelpful. Her quizzes are easy, then her tests are ridiculously hard!
The worst teacher i've ever had.
Terrible teacher. Her tests are so hard you'll wonder if you're in the right class while you're reading the questions. She'll take something she mentioned once (or is breifly mentioned in your text) and expect you to write a paragraph on it. I wish i could write more here cause i'm just getting started. In short, take Holder instead.
Worst teacher. Instead of concepts she asks this person did what experiment proving what? If you don't listen to every little thing she says and read every word in the text expect a low C or worse. The TA handles everything and doesnt know anything either, expect no help and to be disrespected and yelled at /humiliated in class.Run for you life!!!!
As everyone else mentoined DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If I had found out about this website before hand I would've dropped her class instantly! She tests you on matters that DON'T MATTER! You have to read the WHOLE chapter she's testing on or you will fail. I managed an A in the beginning and 2nd term last year I failed the class! BOOOO!
Lectures terrible. She never comes right out and defines anything, instead giving you a bunch of examples, some of which seem unimportant until they pop up on the tests later. Her test questions are badly written, so you often have no idea what the answer is even if you know the material. Her TA is also bad and very unpleasant to deal with.
Take the class with someone else.
TERRIBLE! so sleazy and so hard.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR ..... DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS EVER....
The material in the class is interesting. The prof adds too much extra information in her lectures that she does not test on. The key is to stick to the textbook and do all of the study questions. You should be able to get an A.
GAG ME NOW! HER TEACHING IS SOOOOOO BAD! I WOULD RATHER HAVE SOMEONE PEEL THE SKIN OFF MY FACE AND POUR SALT AND LEMON JUICE ON MY THE BLOODY REMAINS (WHILE I WAS STILL ALIVE)WHILE I WAS WATCHING THEM EAT MY FACE THEN TAKE ANOTHER CLASS WITH HER! BUT HEY, SHE'LL HELP YOU OUT IF YOU WERE EVER LOOKING TO KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO NEARLY FAIL A CLASS.
She's only bad if you don't know how to teach yourself. She adds so much information into lectures and expects you to know every little detail of even the things that she doesn't talk about in class. Be prepared to spend lots of hours reading the textbook.
Okay, I am not dumb, but I always left her class feeling stupid, because she uses such scientific jargon I just felt like I was in way over my head, but I stuck it out, unlike most people in my class that dropped out, I would reccommend avoiding her like the plague
Why is she still teaching? Her classes and teaching styles are terrible. Tests are easily lacking validity and question are misleading and confusing. I'd love to vote her off the island.
What an awful teacher.. talks and talks and talks, you won't ever get a break from listening to her. so boring and her tests are ridiculous. She expects you to take down everything she says and then know everything in the text book as well becasue "it's all important and nothing can be left out". Get out of the class!!
just plain bad and nothing else to it. STAY AWAY!!!
I understand why people are giving her bad ratings, however, its not her shoddy teaching, its the fact that intro psyc covers a ton of stuff and if your not willing to put time in your probably going to feel dumb. She does do an excellent job of getting all the information across while still having decent student interaction for a class of 160
Possibly the worst teacher at UBC-O. She is never willing to help out, is terrible in class, and relies completely on the textbook. She is completely insensitive to the needs of the student's she teaches and, in all seriousness, should not be part of this Universities future. Avoid her at all costs.
hardest teacher in the world.. i realli dont like her teaching.. POP quizzes just to get u mad.. totally unlike the other prof. expects too much of her students.
Terrible terrible teacher, hard to pay attention, hard to study material. She tests on stuff that was never learned. Avoid at all costs. Nice lady, terrible teacher.
she talks a mile a minute, and if you raise your hand to ask a quick quesiton she looks at you like you're stupid and won't answer very well. her pop quizzes aren't too hard, but knowing that they could be at anytime, you pretty much have to go to every class. her midterms and final exams are really hard.
Notes are not very helpful! Read the text over a few times for test!! Hard teacher but if you participate and make an effort to do well it will not go unnoticed!
Unfair marking, super long tests with way too much long answer and too many MA questions for the time period provided. Seems to think she's teaching MDs.
She is very tough and doesnt put up with any crap. but she is brilliant and good to work with.
She cares about teaching students psychology AND important univ related skills. She teaches 1st year classes & is tough compared to the spoon-feeding you get in high-school. She doesn't baby students, instead she teaches them valuable lessons about how to function at University (internal locus of control + independence, not reliance + blame).
Tests are generally right out of the textbook. Her lectures are pretty useless, spends too much time trying to sound right and is very condesending.Just stay in your room and study and show up for the weekly quizzes.
Test were slightly ridiculous. Many of the questions were very ambiguous sounding and unclear. Very Hard Marker. Class time was sometimes used effectively, other times we watched movies while she marked homework on the side. Class was very rushed towards the end.
Very hard to pay attention to! Talks way too fast to even attempt to take effective notes, mc questions on exams can be ridiculously ambiguous. Only prof that re-uses mc questions from previous years and won't let you keep your exams. Textbook is way more useful than lecture notes!
She is a great professor, very organized and helpful. Every lecture includes powerpoint presentations with lots of images and videos. She has weekly quizes which motivate you to keep up with the readings and her tests are only hard if your not willing to put in the time required for standard university courses. I would take more classes with her.
I am taking a psychology degree but this teacher is so boring I would rather watch grass grow. She is so vague on her teachings but expects a very defined answer. Her weekly quizzes are simple but her midterms are so hard sometimes I thought I was writing a test for a different class. Save yourself and RUN FAST AS YOU CAN!!!
She is very degrading and I found that she only respected students who spoke out continuously. She was also very stubborn and though her weekly quizzes were easy, she didn't make them and when answers were incorrect she was very stubborn to correct herself. One of the most boring classes I have ever taken. I really really disliked this professor.
nice enough person, not a good prof for first year psych though.
I loved Psychology when I started the year, but this course put me off it. This prof did try hard, but she fell short of the mark. Very dull, and a very difficult marker. She's very picky about mistakes in bibliographies, so make sure you edit them carefully before you hand them in.
Record her lectures. If you do not memorize everything she ever said you will not get a good mark. Seriously, save yourself a lot of anguish and misery, TAKE HOLDER!!!
Impossible to understand her lectures, they are randm and cover very little from the course content. Exams are marked scrupulously and very difficult to get a god mark
Extremely dull class, tough exams included minute details that were unnecessary to the course. Overwhelming for a first year course, and definitely not worth the time. I would not recommend this teacher, as she lost my interest in psychology.
Did not like this prof at all. When asked questions she would undermine you. Also sometimes very confusing in the way she would go over stuff. But some of the course content was rreally interesting, and her videos were ok. I am takin 121 next, but with diff prof, recommend psych but not with her
She seems knowledgeable in her field of study, but her tests are ridiculous. MC questions are rather ambiguous, so even if you know the material you may be confused. The marking is terrible - a MC question can be worth as much as a short answer question. Weekly quizzes were easy as long as you read the chapter. Not terrible, but avoid if possible.
I should have looked on here before I went in her class. I can say without a doubt I agree with every negative comment on this Professor. Stupidly difficult, provides no help, basically insults students and teaches at her level, not at the level expected of a third year student. Too hard for what needs to be learned.DON'T TAKE HER!!TAKE WOODWORTH!!
worst class, worst teacher, if i had known it would be so bad i would have left it long ago!
Completely unfair in marking, and strict with rules. She is the worst prof you will ever have, and I've had prof's who screwed up our formula sheets for chemistry finals, causing everyone to not finish their final. Snyder is unreasonable, uncaring, and unapproachable. She needs to be fired, or quit, all the students hate her anyway
I respect this prof but will not be taking her classes in the future. She is knowledgeable about what she teaches but her lectures are awful. She lectures way to fast and is very unclear. Her tests are very difficult for the level of teaching and she marks really hard. I ended up with a good grade in her class but studied for MANY LOOONG hours!!
Terrible! Lectures were way too fast, so notes are incomprehensible to study, and she isn't willing to help outside of class, so attendance is a must if you want to survive. Exams were difficult as she looks for word-for-word answers from what she said in class, and has high expectations of what you should remember. Don't take if you can help it!
Although everyone hates her, if you just listen in class and read each chapter she talks about, you'll do fine, she is kind of rude sometimes but shes pretty nice if you go talk to her and ask for help. The good thing is she knows what shes talking about!
Why is UBCO putting their reputation at risk with this professor?! Dr. Snyder tries tricking students on every question. Her amazing memory becomes everyones problem, she will test you on things she's never taught before and when confronted says later 'oh yea, I may have taught the other class this material n forgotten to teach you guys this' ARGHH
She is rude, power trips, doesn't care to see students succeed. Our class average is about 55% and apparently someone is getting 100% but it is a mystery as to who this person is because when you ask around everyone has either failed or just passed.
absolutely the worst prof ive ever encountered. she is knowledgeable but is not eager to help. even worse, she judges and can be very rude, brutal and made my life miserable. eager to put you down as a student, not encouraging, and just very unpleasent person
Bring a pillow.... and another pillow for your pillow. The most interesting thing in this class was watching her head bob...you know...kinda like the tacobell one on the back of peoples cars..tough marker, rude, mean, doesn't like to see students succeed, her powerpoint is a joke (no info, all pictures)doesn't write anything down, hard to follow.
After reading all the comments that people wrote about Professor Snyder, I was tempted to drop her class. I'm sure glad I didn't! I think she is a wonderful professor, she cares about students doing well, and is passionate about her field. If you are serious about school, and actually put the time in, I highly recommend taking her classes.
Worst teacher i've ever had. super hard and her exams are so unclear. if your in this class drop it because its just a GPA dropper.
This woman is making me reconsider my major. She is unhelpful, her lectures are scatter brained, and because of this, the book becomes totally mandatory. However, trying to follow what she is saying with your book during class is no use because she is so unfocused in her lecture. She has a mandatory quiz at the beginning of every class. it sucks.
This woman wastes your money, your parents money, and your financial aid. This is supposed to be the beginning of my major and this is the s!it I get? she is horrible. There is NO redeaming factor with this woman. None. avoid Snyder's classes. There is always another class you can take instead! I should mention, I do try in this class and take notes
I'm not usually one to tell others to base their decisions off of the opinions of others, but this is one time when I fully encourage it. Snyder is one of the most truly uncaring, rude, and impatient people I've ever met. Her class is TERRIBLE, and her stubborn, childlike, actions are enough to make someone second guess their major.
She was a nice enough person, but her course was pretty hard. The midterms were really hard- I studied lot and didn't do that well on them. REALLY INTERESTING COURSE but hard!
The class isn't as horrible as everybody makes it sound, It isn't particularly helpful with exams but she tends to favour the kids that are always there. She knows everybody by name and picks on kids in class that don't pay attention. She is quite rude and stuck up but the course is relatively easy. Read the textbook and you will be fine.
Classes were not always attention grabbing, however her quizzes in each class helped me keep on track with the text book readings. Her slides don't provide details, just the out line of what one should really know. Exams were not overly easy but not hard as long as you READ the text book chapters. Overall good course.
I believe she is one the most caring profs if you actually pay attention to her and talk to her about your course problems. she is extremely helpful and like to see students' dedications at classes. all in all, a fair prof that really knows psychology.
Absolutely Brutal, I am still surprised I passed this class with a 55% Class average was 68%, only because there were either 90-100%, or 55-65%. You MUST give the answer she wants, and textbook is half-mandatory. Show up to class, bust your balls out in studying, she's not helpful or clear. Just avoid her altogether
Worst professor ever. This class made me never take another psych class again. I went in feeling enthusiastic and interested in the material; this all changed after a couple class. Impossibly rude and unhelpful and snide.
Her exam questions are like riddles and you will have to overthink everything. Go see her if you don't understand something and you should be okay. You will have to put in more effort for her classes than for most others and your grade will probably still be lower than usual.
I was very excited going into this class and shortly after the start of semester she turned it into my most dreaded class. She has no desire to help students outside of the classroom and her exams are difficult. Her lectures move quickly and can be interesting but her slides are the bare minimum of what she actually goes over in class. GPA dropper.
She wants you to actually learn the material instead of just memorizing it. She can be quite nice if you go talk to her during office hours. Forsure attend lectures or you will be lost. Tests are hard.I was planning on taking this course because I thought it would be easy..definitely my hardest class. If your up for a challenge this is your class!
I loved Snyder. Her exams are difficult if you don't study. Read the textbook and an A is easily achievable. She want's students to do well and will scale marks if she sees improvement. She is very helpful if you attend her office hours and she likes to see students are making the effort to come see her. Easy course and you learn a lot.
midterm exams are very detailed and difficult.
I took her 241 Cognition class. She really knows her stuff, if you attend the class and do the readings its not hard. She's passionate about what she teaches and her class meditations before she starts are hilarious.
The worst. She is so boring I want to drown in my own tears. Super nice lady, terrible professor. Her tests are just a string of riddles. Even if you know the material like the back of your hand, she will find a way to word a question to confuse you.
great prof, very knowledgable and helpful. overall great experience if you study hard and attend class.
Has great knowledge but uses that knowledge in a way that hurts as many students as she helps. Has very specific expectations and would do better in a quiz format vs an exam format where her expectations of students would be more beneficial. Forcing students to adopt your methodology to thrive is tyranny not guidance.
The course material for visual perception was very interesting. This prof tends to move quickly through material and her explanations can be unclear. Class attendance is very important. Also read the textbook. Many students found this course hard, but as long as you can adapt your studying to her teaching and testing style, it's a piece of cake!
These reviews are simply blasphemous. Caring and helpful prof and made what would be a boring class fast paced and interesting. Class is difficult to begin with but the methods for studying she recommends are very practical and useful. Learned and retained more in this class than any other. extremely underrated prof, reviews here do no justice.
Easily one of the worst professors I've had in my four years at school. She marks hard on redundant and unimportant assignments. Also the marking is incorrect half the time! She will not fully answer questions in class. Also if you can't make her office hours due to another class then you are hooped because she refuses appointments. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
This was the first psychology course I have taken that I did not like, normally I find psych interesting and fairly easy. I don't find Janice makes the class interesting at all. There is a daily quiz worth 1 % of your grade each time right at the beginning of class so if you have to commute to get to school then don't bother with this class
She is with out a doubt the worst professor i have ever had. i worked my butt off for this class and only got a B. u need to be there for classes because her powerpoints make no sense other wise. Overall a very confusing class and most definitely a GPA dropper. She is usually nice when you go to her office hour but not entirely helpful.
She is clear and helpful, but her slides are not organized well. I took time to combine my notes with her slides soon after lectures. Many people found this course extremely difficult but I can't see why. The marks are well distributed and she gives many free marks if you just keep up. Very willing to meet outside of class and clarify. i got 93%
Jan is the perfect combination of a precious, adorable grandmother and a knowledgeable and fair professor. She is great with technology and keeps her lectures and teaching methods up to date more than any prof I've had.
Probably the worst prof I've had in my uni career. You have to work your butt off and attend every class or her slides make no sense. Definite GPA dropper!!
She's a great prof who clearly knows her stuff. I think many people took this class as a GPA booster but if you want an A you will definitely have to go to class and do the readings. Overall, I think she is a fantastic prof but don't take this course if you are planning on skipping lectures!
I loved her from the introsyllabus lecture and she didn't disappoint! She made a majority of the work have to be done at the beginning of the semester unlike most courses so it never added to my pile up of stuff when that time came around. She was always such a delight to see in class and even helped me with another class once I had finished hers
Fantastic prof, would take another of her courses. Interesting as well since she experimented on us to explain the material even better. Textbook is required for the quizzes based on readings.
Jan is a good prof who has a lot of knowledge about Psych. It is definitely helpful to read the textbook, as she gives quizzes each lecture on the readings. It's not a super easy class, but if you put in the effort you can do well. Jan is especially helpful if you go to visit her office hours, as she can clear up any questions about the material.
The class is very interesting; however, she is a terrible prof. Her class slides are as minimal as possible and she tests mostly on the slides. I had her for psych 219 and its the only class in my entire school career I received a grade below 60%. Her wording of questions on her tests is awful, it is almost like English is her second language.
Worst class I've ever taken in my 3 years at UBCO. Her tests are impossible and she marks extremely difficulty. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. ("taking a moment and settling in...")
Jan has great lectures and very clear expectations for whats going to be on the tests and quizzes. Honestly if you do the text reading you should be getting close to perfect on the daily quizzes cause they are ridiculously easy and theres a free 9 percent from ctks and a very easy assignment. Midterms were a little tough but not impossible at all.
Arguably the worst professor I have had here at UBCO. Lectures are tedious and she lacks clarity. If this course is not a requirement for you, do not take it.
Slide are minimalistic but she posts them online. Make sure you read the pages from the textbook that she says the mini quizzes will be on before each class. She posts a study guide for the written portion of the exam and questions are fairly easy if you followed the guide. Bonus questions on every test. CTKs and Assignment were easy marks.
Worst professor I have ever had at UBCO. Lecture slides are extremely unclear, and there is a clicker quiz at the start of each class, after her 'meditative' period. Do not take this class if you do not plan on attending EVERY class and take fast notes; its a definite GPA dropper. Tests are extremely difficult; with wording that is just nonsense.
I love talking to Jan and her classes are so interesting and engaging if you do all the readings, listen, and take good notes. But her exams are ridiculously hard! Soooooo hard. I take great notes, I read the textbook, I'm super interested in the material, and I talk to her after class butttttttt I still get garbage marks :(
Psych isn't really my thing but still did very well. Grading scheme is VERY fair and A LOT of error room. She really invests into making the course the best it can be. In reality, if you are not someone who tries or does very well you will just find her annoying, but if you do try, she just makes it super easy for you to get the best score you can.
Jan gets a bad rep on here but i honestly dont see it. If you go to class its literally impossible for you to get bellow an 80. Yes you have to read but thats why we are in university, and honestly the material is very easy and digestable. She is a good lecturer but wont give freebies if you dont come to class, so take good notes. tests were fair.
Being a student with an A average and taking this class was extremely frustrating. Ive been to every class, taken notes, and read the textbook and still get average marks on exams. Her slides are useless when studying, she has no structure to her lectures, and is always all over the place making it very difficult to do well. Do not take this class
Dr. Snyder has extensive knowledge of the subject matter, and teaches it in a way that is both extremely challenging, but rewarding if you do the work. You can tell she really cares about her class and her students. Makes it worth it to do the work! I'd absolutely take a course with her again!!
She cares very strongly for the students-you can tell she wants them to do well. The distribution of the work makes the final less stressful because she puts the harder work at the beginning of the semester. Her tests are hard but not overly hard if you do the work. Do the readings, go to class, actually try, and you WILL do well.
Jan has a great positive energy and always seems really passionate about her students and the material. I liked how smiley she was - it created a nice, warm atmosphere I think. If you do the readings and follow along in class you should do well. Only criticism I have is that the structure of her slides is a little confusing to follow.
She has mental issues, all over the place, needs her quiet meditation time, no structure, loud and hyperactive. Attendance is manditory, pop quizes and you can't learn enough to do well. I wouldn't recommend Janice Snyder for a mental health teacher because she has mental health issues herself.
Professor Snyder is a passionate educator, though her teaching style can be unstructured. Stay on top of readings and engage in class to succeed. Using unstuckstudy and other study aids helped me prepare for the tricky exams.
Very energetic, hyperactive, loud, needs her quiet meditation time. Has brain damage issues, explains a lot. At her age she should be retired. Wouldn't take her class again. She needs help.
