She's a very nice young lady. Not foregin, gives good notes that are very helpful when studying for exams. Gives great homework problems that are also very helpful. Likes to do experiments in lecture every few weeks which is a nice change of pace. She does them not the class.
She is a very helpful professor and does lots of examples. Great to take for intro to chem. She knows what's shes talking about and is approachable.
Awesome teacher that really knows her stuff. She is young, fun, and teaches very well. I suggest going to lecture because her notes are everything; if you study them and do the practice tests and other problems the exams are easy. 25 question exams, online homework is helpful, extra credit for doing in class problems. Highly recommended.
Nice, but sometimes she is hard to understand. She does a lot of notes. Got to go to class everyday.
Super nice. Very helpful in her office hours (which she has a lot of) The tests are 25 ?'s, m.c. Attendance is highly recommended in order to get the good notes she writes on the chalkboard. (her notes are awesome! & help alot for the tests) ..exam is hard..ACS standardizes..but curved!! I ended up with a B, (thought i was gonna get a C/D!
She is a gem in CMU's faculty and I hope she sticks around for a while (and hopefully teaches organic). She is very good at conveying the information and this class would only be challenging to one who skips class (so go if you take it!) or has trouble with algebra. One note, do the online homework early as it can take over an hour at times.
Awesome professor. I only took chemistry because it's required and I am not strong in it at all. Ended up with a B- with her as a teacher. Really helpful notes in class and very approachable during office hours. She's very nice and cares about her students.
Usually I am not a fan of the chem professors here @ CMU....but in my experience so far...i find that Dr. Janice Tomasik is one of the best CHM prof. i ever had!......The class itself will take time to understand because well its chemistry...nothing is easy!, but so far shes helpful runs through examples in class and in her office hours she breaks
She was very helpful and always at office hours. She even made more office hours for us to attend. If you need extra help in the class there are meetings that undergrads hold just for the class to cover topics more in depth. Only hard thing about this class was standardized final test. She was a great professor and she loves the topic.
The only positive things I can say about Dr. Tomasik are that she is knowledgeable and speaks English. Her class might as well be online - all of the work is - and it is difficult to keep paying attention in class, even in the front row. Most unhelpful for people without strong science backgrounds.
She is really good at what she does, I'd suggest her to anyone who wants to get through chem!
Extremely nice and helpful, but class was really hard, her exams are difficult and nothing like any of the practice problems in the book or that she does in class and she never curves except for the standardized test at the end. Homework is online and extremely frustrating. Be prepared to put A LOT OF WORK into this class!!!
Good professor. Makes an effort to help her students learn, especially during office hours. However, that's not to say the class is easy. Chemistry demands work, regardless of the instructor.
A truly great example of a caring teacher. She really puts in a good effort to make her students succeed. She always wants students to go to office hors with questions over the material and is extremely approachable. She is actually pretty easy. I would recommend her for any chemistry class.
She is absolutely amazing. My favorite professor this semester by far. She is so caring and wants her students to succeed. She is always available during office hours and is willing to make appointments. She also went the extra mile this year and hired tutors specifically for her class. I would strongly recommend her for chemistry.
One word-AMAZING! She is a great teacher. Her lectures are easy to follow, she cares about her student, and she is very approachable. I highly recommend her!!!
Dr. Tomasik is a fantasitic professor. She explains concepts clearly and gives reminders for tests and homework assignments during every lecture. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help her students and has flexible office hours. She definitely changed my view of college professors and was by far, my favorite professor this semester.
Professor Tomasik was very helpful and will answer your emails within a day of sending them. Even though Chemistry can get slightly dull at times, she does in class demonstrations that are interesting. It's fine missing one to two days but get the notes from someone. They are very helpful for the test.
She is one of the best professors that I have had by far. She is always willing to go the extra mile for all of her students. Her tests are not easy but she explains the material wonderfully, so if you study then you will do well!!
Super hard class, but she is a great professor. shes having a baby, so not sure if shes going to be teaching next fall.
She presents the material well in lecture and is a very nice person, but the tests are ridiculously hard and nothing like the practice problems or homework. She tells us the average grades on the tests and they're very low. You'd think she would take the hint. There shouldn't be so many people taking an introductory chem class for the 2nd time.
Sometimes her notes go a bit fast and can seem a little scattered. She would be a much more effective teacher if she made notes available ahead of time so that you can listen to her instead of frantically taking notes. She sometimes makes things sound harder than they are. Much better than alternative professors for this class. It is hard.
Professor Tomasik is Awesome! She is always willing to go the extra mile for her students and ALWAYS offers her time both in and out of office hours (she is willing to do extra ones if needed). The tests are NOT easy, but if you study then not hard to get a A! I would recommend her over and over for this class! GREAT Professor!
I had Tomasik for 131H and 132H and I LOVED her! She is a great professor who is always willing to take the extra step for her students. Her tests are not easy but if you study well you can succeed. She makes the material interesting and is just a great professor. I would recommend her over and over to anyone!
Had her for both 131 and 132. She is a very nice lady and goes over examples in class, but her tests are pretty difficult. STUDY the DETAILS!
If you're looking for a teacher that understands what she is teaching she is not the best choice. Without her notes she wouldn't understand what she's doing. I suggest getting a different teacher that actually knows what she is teaching
AWESOME. Incredibly friendly and helpful.
Very nice and helpful teacher. You can fall behind quick if you dont keep up with the homework especially since there is alot of it! Tests are extremely difficult so study in advance and use the book whenever you can! It ends up being very helpful!
She goes over easy examples in class, so practice harder ones on your own time, you'll need it. Take detailed notes and visiting her in office hours does help! I love that she does experiments in class sometimes pertaining to what we are learning- makes it so much more interesting!
Very nice, sweet person. But SO difficult! The class (huge lecture) average on the first exam was a D!! And she said that she was impressed with that! Her notes can get very confusing, but she is very helpful and gives good study guides. OWL homework sucks, but it helps for exams, which are near impossible. Lab was pretty easy, just time consuming.
Overall, I would say that if you want to get a good grade in CHM 132, you might want to look elsewhere. I worked my butt off in that class and still wound up with a B- because extra credit was nearly absent and most points awarded came from exam...so if you have a couple rough exams, say goodbye to your GPA. Heard horror stories w/ other profs too.
This class is very hard and having her as a professor is not one of the best options. She is very nice and helpful but the exams are terrible and way too difficult with so much to memorize. I think it would help if she could curve exams. Take advantage of OWL and find a tutor to study. Her notes are not the best when it comes to study guides.
You need to go to class, do the readings and do all of the OWL problems required, and probably some of the optional one's as well. If you go home and do the Owl problems each day after class and work hard you will do great in her class!
Very nice and helpful if you ask. Highly recommend her. Just pay attention and don't slack.
She was a pretty decent professor. Chemistry is a difficult subject to teach and she does a pretty good job at it. Some of the examples she gives in class are a bit easier than what's on OWL, but as long as you go to class, do the homework, and study a fair amount you should be able to pull off an A.
She is the nicest professor I've ever had. I've met with her during office hours, and she really connects with the students. She's extremely passionate about chemistry, and it's not hard to get an A. Memorization is not really necessary. I've never had chemistry before, and this class was a breeze. Stay on top of things, don't worry, and study!
She is seriously one of the sweetest people ever and really wants to see her students succeed. She gives out ample resources- use them. Definitely have to put in the effort to get a good grade in this class.
She was a wonderful professor and was good at explaining concepts. She was always willing to help you if you put in the effort and really wanted you to succeed. I highly recommend taking her courses.
Dr. Tomasik is a wonderful. She is very organized, structured, and explains everything well. You can tell she does everything she can to help students without spoon feeding them. Chemistry is difficult and those who have a hard time with it should use all of the resources she provides. Take her over McGuirk or Lebeau! Her HW grading is better.
Dr. Tomasik is so pleasant! Make sure you go to lecture and take accurate notes of everything she says. Also consider getting a tutor if chemistry wasn't your strong point in high school. The honors section of chem just has a different lab with the same general lecture so it wasn't too horrible. Just do plenty of practice problems!
Tomasik is very helpful. Her class is not mandatory, but is extremely helpful if you go on a regular basis. She offers extra credit a couple times during the semester. MasteringChem homework is generally pretty easy, it's an easy 100%, and she counts it as an exam grade at the end. I love Tomasik and would recommend her to anyone!
Dr. Tomasik is extremely caring, dedicated, and knowledgable. Her class is not easy though; the tests are the majority of the grade in lecture and are hard. The lab is graded quite tough as well. Overall, she is a great professor though, but you must work to do well.
Dr. Tomasik is so helpful! Make sure to visit her office hours and ask as many questions as you can, because her exams are near impossible. For exam #2 our class had a 58% average-and she was impressed we did that well! Make sure to do all the Mastering and really study outside of class, because it really does help. Practice and you'll do okay.
First things first, CHM 131 is HARD. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I've heard Tomasik is the hardest chem teacher to have but she is amazing. She really cares about your grades and you can tell she just loves what she does. Very helpful.
Be prepared to bust some ass if you take Tomasik. She is a wonderful, enthusiastic professor, and she'll help you as much as she can without spoon-feeding you, but her exams are killer and she rarely offers EC; one rough exam and you're going to be clawing your way back up to a good grade for the rest of the semester. You've been warned!
Dr. Tomasik is a great teacher, but her class is HARD. She will be as helpful as she can when you go to her office hours, but one bad exam grade and you've really got to work to pull it up. She only gives exams, no quizzes or in class assignments, and the homework is online. She is definitely the hardest chem prof, but her class is worth it
Tomasik is a great teacher, definitely my favorite here at CMU. Her class will be hard if you don't take it seriously, but if you study and visit her during office hours, you should be fine.
Dr. Tomasik is a decent professor, but her class is difficult. Looking over notes a couple times before the exams will not help you. Lots of preparation goes into her exams. If you attend her office hours, supplementary instructions, and do lots of practice problems, you should be fine.
Dr. Tomasik is a good professor and her lectures are very helpful. This is an 'active learning' class, so you spend a lot of time teaching yourself and doing group work. Group assignments everyday (except exam days), so GO TO CLASS or you will lose points. Textbook is essential because you have to turn in a chapter outline about once a week.
She was an amazing professor. She's super nice and ready to help you. However, unless you are serious about chemistry, avoid CHM 131. It is SUPER hard.
Pretty tough class, lectures are full of long notes and a few example problems here and there. She did not prepare for the ACS final exam AT ALL!
Hard course, so she's a great professor to have for this. Take diligent notes, study, and do mastering chemistry the day you learn it and the class is about as easy as it can get. She works with students well and is very helpful. You can tell she has this job because she cares, not for the money.
Dr. Tomasik is a caring and overall great instructor. She has a lot of respect for her students and it really shows when she teaches. If you can take a lower level chemistry course or have no prior chemistry experience, avoid this class because it is not easy. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND GET TO KNOW HER. SHES MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP YOU.
I took 132 before having Tomasik and barely passed. I needed to retake it in order to apply to grand school and was terrified of taking it again. But thanks to having Tomasik as a teacher the second time around, I understood everything and actually have taken a liking to chemistry (words that I never would have guessed would come out of my mouth).
Tomasik simply whips through material way too quickly, and tries to cram too much material into too little time. I took AP Chemistry in high school, ended with an A, and got a 3 on the test. But even though I learned much of this material before, Tomasik leaves much to be questioned. I can't imagine how difficult this class would be the first time.
CHM 131 is a difficult class to begin with, and Dr. Tomasik does not really make it that much easier. She does the bare minimum during lectures. For example, practice problems that she did in lecture were understandable and easy, but the exam problems would be extremely difficult and complicated. She's not bad, but you have to do your work well.
CHM132 is hard enough without her speeding through chapter; we have 4 minutes left of class and she'll start a new chapter. I regularly attended. She helps, but it's hard to get it if you can't go to office hours. Does not explain the content well for visual learners. I ended up with two tutors and going to McGuirk's class instead. Lab is easy.
This class was very difficult! I regularly attended class and did all of the homework, yet grasping the concepts was challenging. Dr. Tomasik was a sweet professor, but I did not feel as though she prepared us for the exams. She moved very quickly from one topic to the next, failing to give us a moment to comprehend what she had just taught.
In Tomasik's class, she focuses on notes all hour & goes through MAYBE one or two examples for a certain equation. She is detached in her office hours & her tests are tricky. There was one Q that 1 person got right out of 200+ & she laughed about it & did not take it off. Basically, if you are not good at chemistry already do not take her.
I hope you have a good grasp of Chemistry already! She moves really quick, so you have to catch on fast. She'll teach you a concept and then give you an example for the concept that is all messed up. Maybe it's her way of actually seeing if you understand it, but most of us don't! Good luck!
Finish (and understand) the Mastering Chemistry assignments early. Get a tutor, it helps so much. Tests r extremely hard to predict, know how 2 do the most difficult content. Go to her office hours at the beginning of the semester, she's good at explaining content in more than 1 way, but you NEED to ask for help. if you miss class you're doomed
Overall, O really love Dr. Tomasik. Her passion for chemistry is amazing. If you don't go to lectures, good luck passing because this course is very fast paced! She is also always free to help!
Dr. Tomasik does a very good job at laying out the notes for students. She tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams. If you pay attention the exams are not hard at all.
Tomasik is one of the most caring teachers I have had. She genuinely wants every one to pass but you still have to earn it. Her tests can be difficult if you try and study just the night before. It is important to go to the lectures but she makes them interesting. Definitely Recommend!
Tomasik is a great person, but make sure you pay attention during lecture and take notes because they will save you when it comes to the tests. all her tests are multiple choice and very math heavy.
Dr. Tomasik was such a sweetheart and a caring professor. Her office hours were really helpful for any questions on the homework. It's important to take notes in lecture. Definitely would recommend
She's a pretty good professor. The class moves pretty quickly, so you really need to study outside of class or else you won't pass the exams. Everything on the exams she goes over in lecture. Tomasik is really good about emailing students back, and even reminds you via email whenever something is due. Overall, I would strongly recommend her
Janice was a great professor, always accessible outside of class and willing to work with your schedule. Makes lectures clear and easy to follow, always felt prepared for exams.
Dr. Tomasik is very passionate about chemistry. She wants all of her students to do well and will help you outside of class. The mastering chemistry homework takes a long time so start it early. It is broken down into sections, so I recommend doing some everyday. You MUST attend lectures to get the notes. She does move fast so read before class.
Dr. Tomasik is an awesome professor for a harder topic. She does a great job lecturing so harder material is easier to understand. If you show up to lecture, you're already on the right track for a good grade. There are 4 exams and a final, the lab and lecture grades are weighted 25% lab and 75% lecture. She's a professor that wants you to succeed.
Dr. Tomasik is very caring and intelligent. The one thing everyone will tell you is that she moves fast. Its important to not skip lecture so you can get all of the notes from the chalkboard as well as the ones she posts online. The class is difficult, but shes always willing to help you not just get by, but actually comprehend what you learn.
Dr. Tomasik is one of my favorite professors. She is so sweet and does a great job both interpreting the material to understand and highlighting the important concepts. She is available, cheerful and supportive and I recommend her!
This woman is an angel. She realizes class can be dry so she tries to spice it up with some demos. Super sweet and committed to her students' success. If you can, join her lab section!!!
Dr. Tomasik is fascinating and the best lecturer I've had at CMU. This class is difficult but by paying attention in class and doing the homework it is possible to do extremely well. Dr. Tomasik creates an amazing environment where students are encouraged to ask questions. She is very accessible to review material with and ask questions.
She was a really great professor to have! Lectures went at a good pace and were easy to follow, she was accessible out of class. She regularly assigned homework that would take 4+ hours to complete, but it was easy enough to finish as she gave about a month for each assignment. She was really great and genuinely cares about your success in class.
Dr. Tomasik is very nice and funny. She cares a lot about her students and tries to help out others. The class is really easy if you have taken AP Chemistry or any elevated chemistry.
Dr. Tomasik is one of the sweetest professors in the chemistry department. Tomasik does assign a lot of homework before the exams but the exams are open book, open note, and open technology and she weighs homework participation, quizzes, participation, and exams the sam, so the class is not too difficult, but you definitely need to put time in.
I absolutely loved her class! Being online this semester was tough but she was super accommodating. As long as you watch the lectures and do the homework/quizes on time you will get a good grade!
A beautiful human being! She did not make us go to class at the regular time, just posted her lectures online (usually past midnight LOL). The homework was a little heavy but she would give you around 2+ weeks to complete which made it very doable. Ended the class with an 88% and without even asking she put my grade in as an A-! Awesome surprise!
She is honestly a nice professor and acknowledges the struggles of online learning. The exams were a little difficult but honestly that's just based on how well you prepare. All lectures are uploaded to blackboard so no live class and no lock down browser for exams!
Dr. Tomasik is such a great professor. She clearly knows what she is teaching and loves it. Her lectures are easy to understand, and all of the grading criteria are laid out very clearly. She is very forgiving and understands that chemistry can be a particularly hard subject to grasp. She makes herself available and is always there if you need her!
Most amazing professor and she teaches chemistry amazingly while giving you every chance to get help as well. 9.5/10
Dr. Tomasik is a great professor. I loved having her for 131 and 132. This is a difficult class, but if you put work into it, you should get a good grade. The best way to comprehend the material is to watch her lectures and do MANY practice problems. There is a lot of HW, but you have about 2-3 weeks to complete it, so start early and don't wait.
Dr. Tomasik is great. Chemistry is super tough, but she makes it bearable because shes so nice and understanding. Shes accessible outside of class and answers emails quickly. She expects a lot out of her students, but she provides them with the tools necessary to perform. She was the first professor I ever had, and she was a great intro to CMU.
The class was confusing at times, and there is A TON of work. Weekly quizzes, 3-4 lecture videos, and homework, and 5 total exams. I think that if you work hard, you will do well. She is not rude and will help you if you need it. My only issue was weirdly worded questions and lack of feedback on tests. Besides that, it's just a lot of work.
I thought that she structured the course very well for an online course. I thought that the HW, Quizzes, and Exams were easily accessible. I thought that the way she teaches the material makes it easy to pass the lecture portion of the course.
Dr. Tomasik was a good professor to take this course with. I was rarely confused, and when I was, her office hours were extremely helpful. The exams were similar to the quizzes and homework, and she mostly paced herself to give students time. I overall enjoyed having her as the teacher and would recommend taking the course with her.
Dr. Tomasik definitely knows her stuff, always has office hours and is very knowledgeable. However, CHM 132 is a very hard class and I feel like lecture taught nothing. She gives a lot of homework but a long time to complete it.
I can tell that she knows what she's doing and she comes off as approachable, but I wasn't a fan of this class. The class went by at a fast pace and she was inconsistent at times when doing practice problems which isn't helpful. There was A LOT of homework it's hard to keep up. There were also quizzes and other exams on top of that.
I was glad I had Dr. Tomasik for CHM 132. She did a pretty good job overall. Exams are obviously going to be hard for Gen Chem, but she has homework and quizzes as well. She allows for you to do extra credit homework assignments and quizzes at the end of the semester to bring up your grade. She is super sweet and always available to her students.
she was a greta professor. However I simply suck at chemistry, so the material went in one ear and out the other. She goes through difficult material rather quickly in the 50 minute class, and it can be hard to keep up with her. there were times where she assumed people knew how to do certain things. She is a sweet person, very easy to approach.
Professor Tomasik is the perfect professor for someone taking their first college level chemistry class. Part of her research on campus is in chemistry education, and she teaches other classes on how to teach high school chemistry, so she is very aware of the best methods to educate students in this field.
I had Dr. Tomasik online for 131 and in person for 132. She kept her lectures interesting and truly wanted every student to succeed in her course. I had a hard first year of college and Dr. Tomasik was not only understanding, but was also very accommodating. She also offered extra credit and allowed us a study sheet per exam.
Dr. Tomasik is a great prof but the pace is really fast; best way to describe it: shes not a hard prof, the subject is hard. Office hrs are SO helpful, use textbook, and the videos the textbook gives you, study a little bit every day. Also for final exam she curves it quite a bit I got a 60% and got curved to an 82% Disicpline/constistency = A
She is nice and all but did not teach us a thing. You had to teach yourself everything. Lecture is typically just practice problems and it's a new topic each day. VERY fast-paced and only graded on homework, exams, and a few quizzes done outside of class. I honestly learned better from Squattritio and his exams are easier.
Very difficult class but Janice was helpful. Taught info well in class with example problems. STUDY FOR THE EXAMS because they're worth a lot of your overall grade. She always has 1 extra credit question at the end tho and will give occasional extra credit opportunities in class so its helpful to go. I never read the book, just take notes in class
Tomasik is an amazing Chem professor, she does an amazing job of balancing lecture with examples. If you have to take Chem 131 or 132 I highly recommend her.
Janice really does care about her students and what she is teaching. Chemistry may not be the most exciting topic, however, she makes lectures as entertaining as possible. Taking the honors section with her was worth it as we had a separate pre-lab lecture with her instead of another instructor, and she was so helpful during our lab time.
Dr. Tomasik is a great professor. The class moves really fast so be prepared. She is very friendly and accessible outside of class. Go to her office hours! The exams are manageable if you study for them. She grades quickly, too. The subject matter is hard but she gives lots of examples. She is a great lab instructor if you get the chance.
Dr. Tomasik is a very nice professor who cares deeply about her students. However, she moves through material extremely fast and does not provide in depth explanations. Be prepared to review/learn material on your own. Chemistry was my favorite subject coming into college, but I found this class tough. A lot of extra credit is offered!
Her lectures are amazing, she introduces topics at the right pace and spends time explaining difficult topics more in depth. She is a clear speaker and has her power points available on BB. The class is well organized and she is very willing to help you outside of class.
Goes extremely quick but is a good professor. She explains everything well and gives good examples. Provides slides but does leave out some information. She provides study guides before the exam, but exam's are only 25 questions so it is hard to determine what you will be tested on. Doesn't respond to email very quickly if at all.
super sweet professor. was always helpful when things were unclear. i also had her for my chem 131 lab, explained things well and solved any problems & issues super quick. online homework that's given until the end of the unit to complete, but beware theres not a whole bunch of grades outside of exams. she does offer one exam retake though!
Looking back at it, I could've done way better in this class. Dr. Tomasik was so caring and compassionate towards her students by offering tons of extra credit and office hours. If you go to the office hours, you'll do fine. My advice is each math material you learn for the day, study it and do practice problems that night and you are chilling.
Dr. Tomasik is an absolutely wonderful professor who makes one of the harder foundational science courses far more bearable. While not mandatory, it is important to attend lecture as she works through a few equations in class to make sure you truly grasp the material and some parts of lessons (such as some definitions) are not on the PowerPoint.
Janice is an engaging professor who covers a lot of ground quickly. The material can be tough, but her clear explanations and willingness to help outside class make all the difference. Unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Dr. Tomasik is amazing at teaching chemistry! She is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet and she will provide excellent help if you are struggling on anything at all.
This prof has been reading the same slides for idek how many years. She does nothing new and id rather kick a door with a toothpick under my big toenail everyday i walk this earth. THAT WOULD BRING ME MORE JOY THAN ATTENDING A JANICE LECTURE.
Prepare to basically teach yourself this entire course. She says that lectures are mandatory but there's no reason why when all she does is read off a PowerPoint and expects you to just know everything already. The PowerPoint isn't even helpful and if you ask for help, she's just going to brush you off and tell you to read it out your book.
Chem 132 is a hard class, no doubt, but she was an ok professor. She sped through a lot of the material and expected everyone to remember everything from 131, which is crazy. Exam averages are usually low 70s/high 60s, and she does not curve unless it is the final. Only one extra credit opportunity was offered this semester.
the people who complain about janice I guarentee the ones who skip lecture. if you write down everything and practice the problems she gives you, you'll do just fine. yes, the exams average like high 60s, but keep in mind an 86% is an A- and it goes up from there. To fail you literally need like a 52%. overal amazing prof.
Incredibly nice and easy to work with. She is a tough grader but will support you through the process. If you are sick as miss an exam, give her a doctors note and she will exempt that exam.
Genuinely so lovely and is very educated in the material. Answers questions and is flexible with office hours. Made chemistry so easy to understand, and I always felt so prepared going into exams!
Sweetest person ever!!!! Her lectures are really helpful because she does a lot of practice problems with the class. If you show up to office hours or speaks to her after class she is SO helpful and explains material so well.
Class has lots of material but she does a great job at explaining everything. GO to office hours if you're struggling, she is VERY helpful. Class did feel rushed at times and some of the material on exams was briefly talked about in class, which made it hard to know what to study. Homework isn't hard if you take notes and pay attention.
