if you're not a freshman or a liberal, she will hate you

She only teaches nights, but take her if you can!!! U will learn so much!!!!
bleeding heart liberal--think you can actually change the world...take her class

Great teacher! Great class. When she doesn't know something, she BS's it.
She's very cool and very smart woman. Keeps you awake and interested. You learn a lot. It is a lot of work. Just do the studyguides and your set for the class all the way to the final.
She was an amazing teacher. If you do your work you will do fine. Also International Politics with her was amazing!
She is the worst. Do not take her unless you are a bleeding heart liberal. Not a fair grader.

Very nice and interesting person. Hard grader. Do the study questions and readings for class.
Easily the smartest teacher at Loyola
smart but very tough grader
Great teacher. Very knowledgeable about her subject. A little tough with grades though.
She a very personal grader. Don't say anything in a paper she might disagree with, and you'll have plenty of papers. By far the hardest intro course i've ever had. She sucks.
Students who claim that they get bad grades because their professors don't agree with them are ****ty writers. I loved Holc. We rarely agreed but I made an effort and wrote good papers and got good grades. Stop whining.
She is a horrible professor. She doesn't want students to think for themselves, she wants them to spit out her view and ideas. Everything has strict deadlines but she'll never get your work back to you.
only likes liberals
Makes you think, interesting class, not boring at all. Take her and you wont be dissapointed.
So what if she is liberal, i actually found that a good thing about her. Was open to interpretation and likes when you incorporate your own morals and ideas about a topic and don't just spit back what an author was saying. Nice lady.
When I was at Loyola (a few years back), all the guys were interested in her! Brings a liberal view to the table. Either let it open up your mind or allow you to become a good debater (in order to defend your views). Pay attention to Hobbes--its imp!
I was warned about her but realized people are just stupid. Her class really made me think. she isn't biased to her own views in fact she encourages your own opinion. Take her, do the work, participate, and you'll do fine. She rules.
She is an amazing teacher. She forces the student not only to learn the facts but to explore the time period and the people. Her passion for the subject is very contagious.
hope you're her favorite. If you're not, expect her to duck out of appointments and treat you unfairly.
Unhappy with Holc not because she's liberal, but steadfastly leans to the left through her teachings. Professors should remain neutral and she's the moderator of the College Democrats. I pray Kerry wins the election just so she doesn't get vindictive. O yea, classwork is tough and plays favorites.
Definitely liberal and doesnt care who knows it. a LOT of work that you physically cant escape doing but you learn a lot, though if you're conservative you'll be annoyed. dont write papers with a conservative bias.
Don't listen to these idiots . . . Holc rocks. If you write a *good* "conservative-leaning" paper, you'll get a good grade. I hate to see what will happen to y'all in the real world when you encounter people who actually *do* push their politics on you.
enough of this if your conservative she won't like you stuff. im conservative and ahve an A in the class. Also the work assigned is never hard and if you skim the reading and express your opinion in class you'll do fine. i love this class and i would deffinatly reccomend her!
Not good for upper levels. Does not give clear answers. No lesson plans, just go over reading EVERY day. Arbitrary grader. Tries to choose redings to show complexity of issues, though she favors issues based on what she chooses to read. Unhelpful outside of class--very condescending in general.
I loved this class! Holc is such a great professor and the class discussions really helped me understand. I actually was interested in doing the papers. If you write your opinion, back it up and not just reiterate what the most obvious answer is, then you'll do fine.
The class is fun because shes really energetic and funny, but completely arbitrary grader. I'm a poly sci major and never got worse than a B in any upper level poly sci class but she gave me a C+. Your grade probably doesn't matter on your work, she just wants you to suck up and agree with her ultra liberal views. Worst poly sci teacher iv'e had.
Holc was awesome. Second time having her, first was for intro politics. Great teacher - Fair to hard grader, put the effort in and the grade will show. Very helpful on papers if you ask, difficult class if you dont do work. Very fair and understanding. I highly recommend her.
Holc was an awesome prof. Lax on attendance - allowed 5 absences. Very relaxed class atmosphere that was all discussion. Learned a lot, but a little challenging learning what she "wants" (which is specific). Overall, very nice woman, would take again!!
Took her for international politics, which i thought would be an interesting class. she assigns a LOT of work, which she expects you to do,class is boring and EXTREMELY participation oriented. While she is smart, she's very unhelpful outside of class and almost condescending. play's favorites. if your a liberal and you speak up in class, sheloves you
One of my favorite teachers! Classes are discussion circles. You get some chances to slack off in this class but you have to use them wisely. There are a lot of books to read for her class but she gives study questions. She's quite liberal, very funny and she knows her stuff. Take her!!!
Such a nice woman. You sit in discussion circles every time and go over the reading. Class is fun and you can miss up to five classes! She is funny and very helpful I would definitely take her if you can!
Professor is convinced that her ideas are the only correct ideas. She has in mind exactly what you should think and does everything she can to accomplish this goal. Do not take her if you have your own thoughts and opinions. She can be spiteful if you disagree. When you disagree she immediately says you are wrong. She is the worst kind of professor
Do not take a class with her. That's all.
Not flexible to students' learning types; will say that she is aware of the demands of other classes while piling on more of her work at the same time
Actually rather flexible to students, people say that she pushes her beliefs, but I don't see where that comes from, especially in Foreign Policy course she discounts all of the crap for domestic politics...and she tends to shy away from pushing beliefs with that...She is hilarious and your always guaranteed to laugh at least once per class...
Brilliant woman; gives extremely interesting and cathartic lectures/assignment...makes you want to rebel. can be a difficult grader at first until you realize what she wants. an A is certainly attainable if you do the work. i would highly recommend taking her
She was one of those rarities at Loyola that really broke the mold in terms of breadth and depth of discussion. She would really challenge students to analyse, argue, and defend a position which ment prepratation and anaylitical skills were top on her list. I owe a lot of my personal success to the foundations she helped me lay.
this is the second class i've taken with holc and i still love her - great prof and really interesting. she obviously loves her field and conveys a lot of excitement. i would definitely recommend her. she's tough though so make sure you put in the leg work and study for her exams!
Not helpful or understanding at all. One of the least favorite professors i have had here
great teacher
excellent Prof. Smart, challenging, does her job.
Holc is awesome! I look forward to every class with her. I have had her every semester since being here. She gives 3 test (essay/multiple choice) and a paper which she loves to help you on so go to her even if you dont need help. Out of all the poli sci professors, Holc is my favorite.
Holc is one of a kind. Highly intelligent woman that knows her stuff. Her class is really interesting, and will make you think. She grades hard, but once you know exactly what she wants you'll do fine, so go to her office hours for the first paper so you know from the start what that is! Challenging class, but I enjoyed it. Would take again.
I took Holc and was a bit intimidated at first... but she is wonderful! The discussions are important. Say something small and intelligent--automatic 100. Papers--GO TO HER FIRST! The first paper I got a C and went to her for the next 4 and got As! :) DEFF TAKE HER! She cares about her students and WANTS to see them succeed!
If you do all of the readings and participate in class, it will be very helpful for the papers. Her papers seem hard at first, they are not your typical college papers but as long as you write a lot about your opinion and how it's related to the readings, you will do fine. Please go to her office hours.
Very helpful professor. Extremely passionate about what she teaches. Her essays seem hard but they get easier. go to office hours! Very nice woman.
she's so wonderful! she really wants participation, otherwise your grade will be affected. great course, makes you think about what you're reading. the service learning at first seems awful to work in, but it's worth it if you sit down and figure out time to do it, and actually reflect on the people you work with.
Dr. Holc is a great teacher. If you pay attention and do the homework you should easily be able to pull a B. She gives you many opportunities to increase your grade and her class is extremely interesting. She also allows you to miss 5 classes without penalty. However, she does give a lot of homework.
Holc is great! Knows her stuff and is a very kind woman. You have to do the readings and you have to participate. The papers can be tricky but she gives you time to ask any questions. Gives 5 free absences!
She's challenging--you definitely have to do the readings and participate at least once every class, but I promise it will make you a better student and you'll actually learn a lot. Plus you have up to 5 absences before it affects your grade. She's funny and really cares about you. Holc is an angel, take her class.
Professor Holc was the best, completely changed my perspective on politics. Make sure you do the readings and participate in every class. Very clear with what she expects from you on papers. Would definitely take it again
Dr. Holc was an awesome teacher! Had her for 4 different classes and loved each one. She is tough and expects you to read and participate but if you show interest then she'll work with you if you need help. Definitely one of my fav professors at Loyola
Professor Holc is an amazing teacher. Her class can be a little hard at first- you need to learn what she is looking for and answer the questions accordingly. The course is A LOT of reading and writing, with homework every night, but I feel like I learned a lot over the semester. I definitely recommend taking Professor Holc!
Holc has been the worst professor I have ever had. Her teaching style is awful- "textual commentaries" are required for every single class and she will take points off even if you include every required element. Requires participation for each class but will not allow every student to participate. Does NOT lecture or actually "teach" any material.
Seriously such a sweet teacher. Lays out all the facts you need to know for her tests and quizzes very clearly. If you go to her office hours even once you will do well. IF for some reason u dont like her she takes a midyear survey and is flexible on changing her teaching. Helped me get an internship, even after just 1 semester of having her.
Dr. Holc is the best thing going at Loyola. If you don't take her, you are seriously missing out. She will inspire you to be a more informed person, and, importantly, to be a critical thinker. Yes, you will have to attend class, do the readings, and participate. Do your future self a favor, and take her.
Holc wants to see you succeed. She cares, and is readily available for office hours. If you are unclear on anything, and she will take the time to guide you. Get to know her, and she will inspire you.
Great professor. Class got me thinking in new ways. Class is all discussion every day, participation graded daily. Talk and get points. Readings for every class and 10 reading responses. Midterm and Final essays. Really good class, would recommend to PS and GS majors. She always takes surveys and changes how she does things if needed, very flexible
Best class I've taken at Loyola. Take it.
Dr. Holc is a nice lady. She wants her students to do well. That being said, she is crazy about participation, and she is a harsh paper grader. The class is all discussion and 3 papers. She can get moody sometimes and low key takes it out on the class. I would take her again because I liked the discussion and thought it was insightful.
Class was built on 3 papers, final essay, and participation. Readings due each class and all students have to participate in discussion to get full points. Overall, good class that explores different perspectives/approaches to international relations. Holc wants everyone to do well and is always willing to help! Do what she asks, you'll succeed.
If you are a shy person, she'll work with you, but everyone basically has to participate once a class. Once you get used to HOW she wants you to participate and write your papers, her class is a breeze as long as you do the readings are committed to doing well. Legitimately cares about her students.
Class was built off of many small assignments, papers, and projects. Never anything to stress over or worry about. Class is mostly discussion based. Class was very interdisciplinary, students from all majors and backgrounds. Good professor who cares a lot about the material and students.
Makes you do quite a bit of reading for class discussions but she is very very engaging. Gives really good lectures and try’s to get students involved so you aren't sitting there bored out of your mind. Quite a bit of writing to do as well but you legit don't need to do it all by yourself, she will help you through the entire process.
Global Politics of Migration is a great class and the lectures were very thought-provoking and interesting. There's 1250 total points in the class and all you need is 940 to get an A. Kind of shocking to only need 75% of total points to get an A in a college class, but my GPA isn't complaining. Exams are on 15-30 page articles you get every night.
Course is built around discussions over readings each class, your grade is pretty much how well you participated. Tests are fairly easy, normally you only have to answer any 10 out of the 15-20 questions. The readings are the most difficult part of the course, sometimes borderline incomprehensible. Great professor and would definitely recommend.
Dr. Holc is a great professor who teaches her subject with care. I took PS101 and understood I wanted to be a Poli Sci major because of it. Her class can be difficult at times with confusing readings, but past that, it is a great class.
Dr. Holc is very unclear when teaching and very much uses her own opinion to guide the class making it very hard to do well. The homework takes forever to complete and is very confusing for most of the semester. I did not feel like I learned much in this class. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Turns out you're learning more about a few theories of international relations with cherry-picked evidence. Tests are about learning about the reading material more than anything, it's practically a nonfiction English class, you need to give answers based on the author's perspective. Main textbook was outdated, material shows a clear political tilt
Dr. Holc was super engaging, fun and funny and I found the discussions to be interesting and meaningful. You will be required to think deeply, and will get a lot out of the class if you're willing to put in the effort.
Nice enough but grading is unpleasant. She is very nitpicky on word choice and her quizzes hyperfocus on little details.
Holc can be unintentionally condescending when talking to students. Quiz questions frequently seem random, or just whatever she happened to like about the reading. I feel like a lot of time she just spends class time talking about whatever she wants rather than being concerned with discussing the course-related material.
failed half of the class on an essay (offered retakes if students wanted to meet with her to talk about how they messed up). if half of the room fails it likely has more to do with the instruction or grading than the students. seemed annoyed when students disagreed with her. opinions outside of hers often arent taken positively
LOVE PROFESSOR HOLC. She is renowned for delivering captivating lectures that bring politics to life. Her ability to simplify complex topics and engage students is truly commendable, making every class session a valuable learning experience. However, students should be prepared for the rigor of their quizzes. Be prepared for long readings.
I've had her for a few classes and she is literally the definition of slay. TAKE HER CLASSES!
Don't take this class if you are not ready to work hard!
I do not know why i took this class. I am not a poli sci major. not a pre-law student. please. free me
Good professor but A lot of quizzes that are extremely specific and difficult, long lectures, sometimes made us do in class work with groups. Tests were not horrible if you prepared for them.
