Dr. Merrick is a nice lady, and if you are a gentlemen in his 50s, feel free to inquire. She loves what she teaches, well versed, and she has a tendency to throw in personal stories that actually fit. Pay attention and study a little, and you're fine.
While a very nice person Professor Merrick has a tendency to be rather forgetful with the facts of the material she is lecturing on. Class is long, boring and tedious. Her class can be lived through, but I would recommend another class if possible.
A very irritable woman, indeed, but a great professor. I learned a ton in her course.
Don't let the woman near a computer.
Dr. Merrick is a great professor who shows interest in the topic. Her voice is kinda cute so it keeps the lectures interesting and makes you want to listen. Great class...highly recommended.
Her voice is kinda nasal, but that keeps me listening to her. She tries to be fair and balanced but she proves that she's a shameless liberal. That's nice and all, but not everyone shares her opinion. Course material is easy enough. Quizzes are very easy, provided you actually attend class.
Great teacher...I love that she is a liberal, too!
Talks EXTREMELY fast in lectures, which makes notetaking hard to do. Also has a pretty irritating voice. Reviews are very helpful - don't hesitate to go. Tests are fairly difficult; study hard. MUST go to class and study hard. Do the extra credit - I wish I had b/c I got a B.
This class is easy so long as you go to the lectures and take notes. She keeps the class interesting, and has helpful out of class review sessions. You wont even need to study if you go to class and pay attention. I am an "OK" student and got a B with out trying.
Excellent professor, great experience, learned a great deal, sparked an interest in politics, an intelligent liberal woman. Study hard (exams are not easy), and go to class (daily quizzes). I did all that and the exra credit and got an A.
One of the best teachers I have ever had!!
Dr. Merrick is great. She made her class very intresting. As long as you go to class and pay attention you should be okay. The test are kind of had, but as long as you study and do the chapter reviews on the books website you should be good. This was a really fun class. Take it and enjoy it!!!
"Dr." Merrick is an insecure liberal. She is uncomfortable with any quasi-conservative opinion and she is unable to debate with articulate students. Dont take her if you are a republican, you will pull out your hair with grief, tests ara joke, I got a 105 on her final, just like high school civics!
pretty easy, extra credit helped a lot, good review- goes thru the book and tells you what to study; pop quizzes though; gave a quiz as soon as I left...I was really sick....that pissed me off
She is the best professor in the whole department. I cant count how many times I asked for help and she was always willing to help me no matter how stupid the request.
She would spend so much time going over these vague overheads and then give a test that had minute details from the book. Her reviews were pointless. She basically said study everything. The extra credit project is the only way to do good in that class.
She is very one sided and teaches her opinions on things, rather than facts. If you're conservative don't take the class because she'll just make you annoyed. Her tests are over the whole book and she gives lots of pop quizzes. Her extra credit is helpful, however. I like political science and even I hated this class.
Merrick is definitely very liberal and mostly discusses her opinions regarding current events. Her tests were difficult and the reviews were a waste of time. She basically said to study the entire book and very few questions were pulled from it. Do the online practice quizzes from the book and those help a lot!
25% of exams come from online quizzes, you have 11 pop quizzes, you have to read the book or you wont pass the exams, you gotta go to class only for the pop quizzes
Hard tests, pop quizzes in class
Her tests are hard. Pop quizzes in class are super easy. Don't take it at 8 AM because if you miss class you will probably miss a quiz. She offers extra credit, no homework, only 3 tests. Her voice is annoying and she's definitely liberal. Go, listen, study, and you'll do fine. Easy B class. Recommended.
for the most part easy class, but very very liberal
Very ditzy.... voice annoying, but other than that the class was easy. Read the book, show up for the quizzes, do the online pre-tests....
Dr. Merrick is awesome. I love her class and she does everything to make it easy to get an A (but she doesn't just give them away, you have to actually read the book and show up for class). She gives pop quizzes in class as a way to take attendance, so if you don't plan on going to class, I would avoid her. Other than that, she's awesome!!!
she is really a sweet lady, the pop quizes are extremely easy, they are always on what she just finished saying 2 minutes before. The tests are not too bad... just make sure you take the practice tests on the text books webpage, she takes 1/4 of the questions straight from there... really not a bad teacher!
STOP! Ok, she's easy, her tests are easy, and that damned paper she assigns is tedious but easy...it's that VOICE! So annoying. Gives easy pop quizes that can boost final grade. Tests are right out of notes. Not sure I learned anything tho. Optional cumulative final if you missed one of her exams. Nice lady & she really knows her stuff!
I thought this class was EXTREMELY easy, and Dr. Merrick is very friendly and tries to engage the class. The people who say her tests are hard must not go to class or study. I went to class, including her in-class reviews, paid attention, and took the online quizzes, and got a 97% for the semester, including a 103 out of 105 on one test.
Gives pop quizzes, makes extra credit available, and students have the option of the format of exams. Lectures are kinda dry but she does have current event discussions once a week that keeps things lively..
Class is based on a paper or powerpoint project, exams, and pop quizes. The pop-quizes are rediculously easy. You'll get a 100 everytime. She gives the answers right before. The lectures are kind of boring but packed with good info. Use the study guide. Understand it completely because the essays incorporate multiple questions. Pretty easy.
Treats students like children, does not like to be challenged, her grading is a mystery. Take someone else.
Could not understand her logic at all! Easy to take offence, avoid if possible.
This class felt like high school government class. You should really already know most of the material. There are a few in class pop quizes and a final powerpoint presentation. The presentation was a pain in the butt to do. I was upset to see I only pulled a C. This class should be very easy though and Merrick is kind enough. Heavy socialist.

I am a senior at USF and I have to tell you this was the single worst professor I have had during my academic career. She is egotistical, and completely deviod of any form of logic. I didn't learn much in her class and she forces you to read her own poorly written articles.
Anyone who gave this teacher a bad review is nuts. She is so clear about what she wants from you and an extrememly fair grader on the essay exams. The project is time consuming but if you do exactly what she wants you will get a good grade. Lectures can be a bit dry but the information was very interesting. She's a genuinely sweet professor.
The class involves three exams (mostly essay form) and a large project (start early!). Her lectures are outlined clearly and overheads are posted online. She can be a little rude at times, but she is a very competent and intelligent professor.
She puts all notes online so if you print them & bring them to class you can pay better attention and not write the whole time. Tests are fairly difficult but managable if you do the review and the selected readings. Overall its an interesting and easy class as long as you attend, pay attention, study, and do the huge research proj she gives.
She is a pretty good professor who really knows what she is talking about. Lectures are unbearable sometimes because of all the information, but she has powerpoints Blackboard that you can check. Attend class because there are pop quizzes. Tests are pretty difficult, so make sure you go through the chapters in the book and highlight stuff.
Ok . . .She isn't easy but she makes it easy. Apply yourself and you will make an A easily. She makes the text book from many other texts and costs you $50 instaed of $400. She has pop quizes and account for 60 points, so make sure to attend. If you have an off day on a test, she will has a makeup test at the end of the semester you can take.

I have taken a couple of classes with her and this class was so much better than the first. She used the powerpoints for reviews which was SO helpful! Also, she uses blackboard A LOT which also helps and is easily accessible through e-mail, but usually in a hurry between classes. She is knowledgeable, so if you are interested in politics, she would
Not sure what everyone else is talking about but Merrick isn't that bad of a teacher. Her questions are straight foreword. She takes the majority of the questions from the pop quizzes she gives you in class (pretty much every week). Just have to study the outline and watch/listen to her narrative reviews and you'll pass.
No doubt PASSING the class is easy- getting an A is not. She makes it impossible almost. Her lectures are boring and although her tests are easy, her grading of subjective material is a mystery. She throws her study abroad trip down your throat- pretty annoying. Just aviod if you can.
EASY CLASS TO GET A B, BUT HARD TO GET AN A. IF WAS SUMMER A AND SHE CANCEL CLASS 3 TIMES, I LOVE THAT. I DISAGREE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT COMPLAIN ABOUT HER NOT CARING ABOUT HER STUDENTS BECAUSE ON MY CASE SHE WAS NICE TO ME WHEN I ASKED HER QUESTIONS OR I HAD A CONCERN, ALSO SHE RESPONDS THE E-MAILS QUICKLY. I WOULD MOST DEFINITELY TAKE HER AGAIN.
Nice enough, but the class lectures are pretty boring. She throws in an interesting story or starts a discussion once in awhile, but for the most part she reads off her notes. Pop quizes are easy and the tests are all MC. She offers a huge extra credit project that will bump you up a letter grade. Little dry, but she's a pretty good teacher.
If you can't pass this class you have no business in college. She tells you absolutely EVERYTHING that is on the test. 80% from the book, 20% from online practice tests. You don't even have to read the book, just go over definitions, and cases and you'll get an A. You have 3 tests with opt. final, and 10 quizzes in class. Boring class, good teacher
Old, nice lady who cares about her students. Pretty easy but boring. Pretty moderate in her beliefs but I suspect she's a bit on the conservative side. No homework or anything. Just show up and pass the easy quizzes. Didn't have a problem with her.
I Loved Dr. Merrick's class. She is very smart and helpful. She helps you get cheap textbooks. TAKE HER YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
One of my favorite professors I have ever had. She knows what she is teaching and is very intelligent. She provides online videos to help study before tests which are VERY useful. She also tells great stories! Take her class! She's great!
OMG I love this professor! I wish all my profs at USF were like her. If you fail this class, you didn't try. Lots opps to pass and make up for mistakes. Exams are tricky and challenging. She doesn't give herself enough credit. She is a techi diva in her age group. Tries to be tough but is a major sweetheart! Not buying her tough act LOL
No cell phones or labtops, she will take them away and send you to the principals office...lol... Completely impossible to get an A. Elitist, libral, condescending, but very nice if you agree with her.
Great Prof! She helps you anytime you need it and knows that you have a life outside of her class. Her class is not difficult as long as you do the easy little bit of work you get. She has a great study abroad trip too!
She is very scattered and wastes a lot of time showing personal slides. She sets a guideline and then changes it. She gives special considerations for some but not all. Not very clear and concise.
There is effort required, but she does absolutely everything she can to help you get the grade. She's intimidating at first, but its just how she is when you meet her. She's very clear about expectations & is incredibly helpful. This material was boring, but I'd still take any other class with her. Highly recommend.
All around the class is easy she gave an optional final to help those who messed up on one of their exams.just go to class and read over notes and should be okay.
I have her for 2 classes. American Government is very easy with many options for extra credit. Public Policy on the other hand is a little bit tougher. Not to tough though. Just review the powerpoint slides before the tests and you should be good
Dr. Merrick is a good teacher and much better then some others in political science. Her classes are fairly easy and her lectures are well organized with power points. A term paper is due at the end of the course and it is a bit strenuous with all the requirements. Politically she tends to lean left. All in all, I recommend taking her.
Took her during summer A Urban Politics. Pretty easy class.. She uploaded all class notes, did the readings for us via powerpoint, in-class quizzes, cut class short every time, easy exams, extra credit... Need I say more? She's also nice and understanding; I'd recommend her.
I took this class online and found Dr. Merrick to be very helpful. She puts up lecture notes and videos of the lecture material which were incredibly helpful. USE THEM! She lets you buy an older book that you can find for about a dollar on Amazon, so that helps too.
Dr. Merrick is amazing. I am a Mass COM major and I feel like I actually learned in her class and it was actually online. She responds back to emails, fair, and she is an overall great person. I enjoyed her class and I learned!
She gave an unrealistic amount of work in her summer session American Government course. If this is your only summer course it shouldn't affect you, but if you are taking others, the workload she gives is impossible to make a dent in. It should be more important for us to actually retain the material rather than cram it all in just to pass.
I took it fully online. The quizzes were very easy if you watched the lectures. The tests were lots of questions from the quizzes and then some from the required videos. I did not buy a book and I seemed to get along fine without one.
I took American Gov't Online, Merrick is a good lecturer and offers many extra credit opportunities. Make sure you follow the schedule and listen to the textbook overviews she gives and you should be fine.
Going into this class I was nervous because government has never been my strong point. This class is more of a political science class which I liked. I went to her for help once but didn't take much from it. I am a good student but I found the exams pretty hard. Good luck.
Such a great teacher! I studied abroad with her and it was so fabulous. She does everything possible to make your trip real and amazing!
This professor is decent. She is lenient with attendance and her tests are fairly easy. Unlike what she'll tell you on her syllabus, she is terrible at emailing back. Go to her Grad student for any info. Don't expect to use any electronics in her class either.
The class is easy. Didn't watch any lectures or read the book and still got an A. The only issue with her is she uses the class as an advertising tool for her study abroad trips. She had us come in for first day mandatory attendance and talked about study abroad for 1 hour.
I took this class online and it was relatively easy. Just skim over her power point presentations and you should be fine in her class.
Great professor! Be prepared to study, but it's really not that bad. She gives you a choice as to how you want your exams- MC or written. Found her class very interesting. She's also very funny.
She is the example for how online classes should be. This course was made easy by her weekly video-lectures. Very lenient about what version course text you have. Tests are easy after going over material(no study required), extra credit is available (but not needed). She hosted study sessions on campus and bought pizza. Highly recommend.
Literally the easiest class, I did not read or watch one lecture. If you have the book you will get an A. I put in maybe 6 hours into this class total. Took it summer A online. If you don't get an A you are quite dumb
The professor is super nice but the class is too basic. It goes over stuff I learned in high school.
She is very funny. Her tests can be difficult. You have to study in order to do well on them. There are pop quizzes, but she goes over what will be on them right before she hands them out. There is a 20 page paper due at the end of the semester. Overall great teacher. You have to have the textbook but she allows you to buy an older version.
If you don't pass this class it's totally on you, because she's about as helpful as a professor can be. I also learned a lot. Maybe a lot of it is review for some people but for me there were many new things that were pretty interesting to find out.
Fantastic professor! I am excited to take another class with her next semester. She will grade fairly, give great feedback, and as long as you study and read your book you should pass. Not too hard that you can only memorize, and not too easy that you dont learn anything. She is perfect!
The class repeated a lot of things from high school government. The more complex things were not explained in a lot of detail. The online format for the course was not bad.
Dr. Merrick's class was super easy! You don't really have to read the textbook, just watch her reviewlecture videos & she tells you what material you need to know. There are 2 quizzes and 2 exams per unit (3 units total) & she gives you PLENTY of time to complete them, plus an optional cumulative exam. Very easy class!
Take the online version. Very Easy! YOU MUST TAKE A LOT OF NOTES off power pt and book. Take good notes and you will pass the class! The key is good notes. The power pt lectures/reviews are long but helpful. Exam/quiz questions come from lectures. 3 exams with optional final. Final can help or hurt you. 7 quizzes 10 questions each (2 dropped).
This course isn't bad online if you put the actually put effort in, I liked it. She is so willing to help you if you go to her with any questions, she is super nice. You have to listen to her lectures and read to pass. I got an A, but I also put a lot of work into it.
One of the best online classes I've taken. Don't really even need the textbook because everything you need can be found online.
Professor Merrick sets her students up for success. Her lectures are interesting and she lets students know what will be on all quizzes and exams. While you have to do a lot of studying for exams, she tells you what areas need the most attention and how many questions from the textbook, lectures, and films there are. Follow her exam preps for an A.
I don't know. A lot of people typically find Professor Merrick funny and easy. I took her online Political Science/American Government class and honestly it felt like a lot of work and was awfully boring. And usually I'm very interested in classes like these. She posts powerpoints online and then separate videos of her just reading off the slides..
Fairly easy classes and the lecture videos were easy to understand, but how she set up the videos and powerpoints was confusing. Only graded on quizzes and tests. Optional cumulative final and an extra credit assignment.
She is an amazing person, and a great teacher. I don't know how anybody can give her a bad review. I wish she were doing face-to-face classes more than online ones, but that's the loss of students, that they are unable to meet such an exceptional woman.
This class isn't hard. The chapters are long, but if you do only one chapter a week it's easily manageable. You don't have to watch the lecture videos, just use the Word summary she provides. She also provides lots of extra credit points. Tests are long, but just take notes on the chapters. Optional final and no papers. Clear what will be on tests.
This is class very easy, just watch the lectures and take good notes and you will do well on the tests. Would recommend for an easy elective.
Prof Merrick makes the subject interesting. She gives detailed info about what is on the test. I took online, all tests are open book. Also have to write short reports on current events & post the reports on the discussion board. Plenty of opportunities to do well in this class. I recommend her.
Urban Politics is NOT your typical bs online class. It wasn't HARD per se but it required a LOT of work if you want to get an A because so much material is on the exams. Definitely read the syllabus first and see if u can handle the kind of work this class needs. If you follow her instructions, you can get an A, but it's a lot of work.
Professor Merrick is the epitome of what an online class professor should be like.. she was always available to help with questions, basically 24 hours of the day. She was VERY clear about how she wanted things done and what to expect on tests, and she also reminded students quite often when assignments were due. If you do what you should, you pass
Professor Merrick is awesome!! Took her Summer B online American National Government class and I learned a lot. She gives you all the tools you need to succeed so be sure to take advantage of them. Aka study guides, lecture transcripts, extra credit, etc. If you dont pass its simply because you didnt try. Amazing teacher definitely recommend !
All you had to do was read the chapters, watch the lectures, take the lecture quizzes (5 questions) then take the exam for each section. She breaks the exams up into part A and B which is nice and you dont have to take them on the same day (50 questions each). 1 extra credit assignment and no discussions or papers! Super easy class.
The quizzes and exams were difficult even if you read the book. So many extra videos you need to watch. This is not at all equal to the amount of work you'd take in a live class; it is so much more work. For each discussion board report you have to write four 500 word essays. I would recommend you take any other professor.
I have Dr. Merrick for an online class and her lectures are great because she is so funny. Very sweet woman and a great professor. Tests make up the biggest part of the grade, so your grade will most likely be an average of your tests plus a little bit of whatever else you do for your specific class. Overall amazing professor!
Grade is mostly base on the test. Test are heavy even if you study. Don't recommend her.
Take Professor Merrick!! The class is really fun + easy with interesting lectures and slideshow presentations. Its split into three parts and you have more than a month to do each one at your own pace. Extra credit available. As long as you utilize all of your resources for the exams I would be SHOCKED if you got anything less than an A.
Way to much work. Test and quizzes will kill you in this class. Boring tired videos you watch. Take another teacher if you want a good grade.
I LOVE HER! Went on a study abroad class with her to London and Paris, she is an amazing professor. The course for the trip was super easy, 4 exams and a journal thats due months after the actual trip.
American National Government (Online) is so easy and fun. The content is interesting and it's impossible to get anything below an A. There are 6 mandatory online exams plus 5 question quizzes for every lecture. It's a great class and she's a very caring professor, despite the class being online.
Horrible class with way too many videos and powerpoints to watch. Get ready to work your behind off in this class. Take another professor she is horrible
So many lecture video's
She is very passionate about what she teaches. The only way to fail is to not do any work. She has many videos to watch and reading the textbook is 100% necessary for the class. As long as you watch her videos and take basic notes you will pass the class. She answers her emails in a timely manner. She has extra credit and multiple papers to do.
A very very good teacher, there was a lot of information available. The video lectures were very informative. Only complaint is there was no other assignments but the exams. There is extra credit but you would need to do well on the exams to earn a good grade.
The class has a lot of quizzes and there are three exams that are split into 2 parts each. You can work ahead of class schedule and the quizzes/exams are open-note. While I never had to contact her directly, she is a fair grader and is empathetic towards what everyone is going through with COVID-19. The class is easy and I would 100% take it again.
This course was great because you were allowed to work on your own time. She posted all of the powerpoints and lectures and you could watch and learn on your own time. Then 4-5 quizzes and a 2 part test every 3 weeks or so. You could distribute them through the three weeks or take them all at once. I never watched lectures but she was always nice.
Very well structured class. All the information in the lecture is important and interesting. If you listen to the lectures, you will do will in class. Very caring professor.
POS2041 was a super easy class with her. Shes funny and makes her lectures quick and easy although its split up into a lot of parts. No real complaints about her. Her tests are open note and textbook so there's no real reason to do badly. A lot of repeat questions from weekly quizzes. Great class to take as a gen ed
Course is graded by quizzes and exams that are due once a month only. There is a textbook, but I personally did not purchase it and I am not sure if that is the reason I found the exams to be difficult. Final exam is optional. Extra credit is provided and is a difference maker!
In her class, you have a few quizzes and a 2 part exam due monthly. She drops the lowest 3 quiz scores and she gives bonus questions. If you don't do so hot on an exam she has an optional retake at the end. She really understands life from a student's perspective and tries really hard not to overload people. There was a textbook but not necessary.
Professor Merrick is amazing. She is clearly an expert in the subject and she manages to transmit her knowledge to the students in a very interesting way. As long as you watch the lectures and documentaries she posts, and read the textbook you will do fine on the quizzes and exams. Definitely recommend her. She is also very understanding.
Super nice older professor! Watch the lectures and you'll be fine for the quizzes. Do the study guides and you're guaranteed to pass the exams! I would wait until a few days before and do weeks of homework.
Professor Merrick is a good professor to choose. She allows students to complete work without her hovering over. The class is fairly easy and there is not much asked for. She gives students a month to complete 4-5 chapters to complete an exam afterward. It is not really time-consuming, just read, review, test, and pass!
Took this class online, easiest thing ever. one quiz per lecture and the lowest three are dropped. I had the textbook but soon realized I didn't need it. only about 15/101 questions on each exam are from the textbook. I didn't get below a B on any exam. the material was actually interesting and I would definitely take her and this class again.
I took this course online and it wasnt bad but was very test/quiz heavy. The course is not the easiest I have ever taken but if you do the work and take your time you will get an A. If you have to take this course I suggest taking it with her. She gave a couple easy extra credit assignments at the end of the semester and an Optional final exam.
As long as you read the assigned chapters and additional readings you will be fine. There are a few papers but they are easy. As long as you study hard you'll be fine for the exams.
Dr. Merrick is great, I've taken multiple classes with her. I would recommend any of her online classes. She provides extra credit and plenty of extra materials to help you pass the class. The content of the course relies on the textbook so make sure you have it and you stay on top of the quizzes and tests and you'll do great.
Weird point system where basically hws dont even help your grade. Class was way harder than needed. She made us watch 3 to 4 documentaries which were each an hour long to then ask nit-picky questions not even related to the class. Exams are 100 questions and MANY are irrelevant + not even in lectures (even tho they are so long) or in the textbook.
She is very confusing and also shows favouritism towards other students. She was never detailed and always made our class feel uncomfortable. I never have an issue with older teachers, but she made me think that she would be better off in a nursing home. I would not recommend her if you are a person of color!!!
The worst professor at USF she is not caring, not organized and not helpful at all. She is rude to her students, does not know anything, and does not post any structure or rubric for her assignments. She is very rude, racist, and judgmental. She does not like to be proven wrong nor hear any students opinions. She will make your life miserable.
Worst Professor not helpful. Does not care for her students.
I'm currently in her American Gov't class. Told us she picked our textbook, and if it isn't the most biased thing I've read. She lectures her political views very strongly in every slide. It isn't appropriate to lecture your views when teaching kids about gov't because it doesn't let anyone form their own opinion.Tests on her views instead of facts
Professor Merrick is very unorganized with her canvas page. Her exams were also oddly specific and a bit difficult. She is heavy on lectures as most of her exam questions come from her lectures. Textbook is necessary because a lot of the exam content comes from the textbook. The final paper was not difficult, just a bit time-consuming.
Does not how to work canvas AT ALL. The entire semester I did not know my grade because they kept disappearing. The exams are extremely difficult since they are biased. There is a ton of extra credit though, and that is what really helped my grade in this course
Amazing professor who really keeps your attention riveted to lecture videos. Lots of (interesting) reading though, so take notes, even on documentary videos. Dr. Merrick provides breakdown of exam questions to help you prepare, and also offers extra credits to help you succeed. Really interesting research essay topics too- start early!
I love Dr. Merrick! She's passionate about what she teaches while remaining non-biased to her own views. She always presents both sides of the argument, and the quizzes and exams aren't too bad if you pay attention to the lectures. She also brings snacks every week to our 2hr 45 min classes
neutral professor about political science, has questions from documentaries that she wanted you to watch, I never did, attendence isnt really mandatory but has 5 question quizzes every class that counts towards your grade. very easy class especially for a gened would recommend taking this class if looking for an easy A, i never baught textbook
