Janne's good, but sometimes it's difficult to follow her train of thought. She's a ogre about APA and grammer.
Man-hater with no sense of humour. Inability to explain relatively simple concepts, more apt to confuse than not. She expects you to have 100% grammar, and gets REALLY upset when you correct her own horrible mistakes. Frustrating teacher.
Not to clear in her lectures
She knows her stuff. Is approachable in her interviewing class. I've had a good experience with her marking of papers.
I enjoyed my classes with Janne, you just have to work hard in her class and she will reward you for it.
Very knowledgable
Very through.
She is very knowledgeable, helpful, and relates material to jobs. She has a lot of connections and uses them to make class better. Tough marker on essays but gives lots of help if wanted.
The class was very informative, it taught me a great deal about topics covered in the textbook. Guest speakers were very useful and greatly appreciated! Awesome prof
Awesome prof! Attend her class, you get 10% for attendance! Assignments were straightforward, NO FINAL EXAM. Very interesting and very clear on what she wants.
Had her for analysis of forensics. High 80's and 90 for paper and midterm, but final project a 75%? She was really unclear of what she wanted. Participation is 10%, no final. Other than the final project screwing me from getting an A.
Dr. Holmgren is a great professor but is very intimidating. Attend class and you will do well.
Interviewing skills is a great class, but you have to be ther to get the most out of it. Dr. Holgren is very helpful, and often puts you on the spot (interviewing in front of the class) but it helps you to get out of your confort zone. No midterm, two DVD assignemnts, I didn't open the book, went to every class, and got an 85 in the class!
Very clear, helpful, funny, and knowledgable. Would definitely recommend her to any student!
Amazing insight! Bar none the most interesting material ever! We even hooked up with the ME's office!
This was the first time in my justice program I was exposed to death! Dr. Holmgren took us through decomposition and difficulties with determining tome of death.
Lectures are super interesting. Also, research papers are fun and useful.
Lectures are interesting. Midterm is somewhat difficult but she is an easy marker. Research papers are fun to write
Janne may come off as a tough prof at the start, but if you are willing to put in the work you will be rewarded in the end. Showing up to class is required if you want to do well in the course. She is a fair marker and is willing to review your assignments before you hand them in. Would take a class with her again.
Went out of her way to make the midterm a dreadful experience only to mark it extremely easy. 2 essays were easy, but lacked any meaningful feedback . Her attitude through me off. She is next level condescending, but does it in a subtle way. Everyone probably got an A which makes you want to only do the bare minimum. Wont know your name by the end!
She's a mediocre professor.
Dr. Holmgren is a very intelligent person that cares deeply about the success of her students. Class participation is a must to get a good grade. She is more than willing to assist students at any time and overall a great person to chat with. Making an effort to meet her personally will improve the overall satisfaction in her classes.
I love Dr. Holmgren. She is so inspiring and interesting to learn from because of all her experience. This is probably my favorite CRJS class taken so far. Her classes are so interesting and applying her info to real world cases. Participation matters and some of the projects can be challenging but they are very helpful.
Amazing professor, she can be a bit intimidating at times. If you are respectful and show up for class, you will find that she is easily one of the best profs you'll ever have in terms of feedback and speed of getting marks back. Will take one of her classes again in a heartbeat.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Holmgren. In front of the class she appears to be a very sweet, lovely and understanding lady, however over email or in person (1 on 1), she is quite different. She made the exam sound so hard and she gave us the entire outline of the exam, only to give us an exam that was extremely easy.
Dr. Holmgren is a good prof in the sense that she lays out exactly what you need to do for projects and assignments but then on the other hand grades you extremely hard on it as she has lots of experience herself (she wrote her own textbook for this class) and will straight up tell you that you suck and pick you apart, which is degrading.
Janne Holmgren is easy to get ahold of BUT quite rude when speaking to about questions or concerns. unfortunately, its her way or the highway so dont expect this class to be easy. Buy her textbook, and be ready to read the whole thing - she will put you on the spot in class about it.
Dr. Holmgren is smart and knows her content very well. I loved her lectures, but she can be very intimidating outside the classroom. Her tests and assignments can be overwhelming but I think she's a fair marker. I feel as though she has her favourites in the class. She's okay, I can tolerate another class with her
She's okay. But her exam was extremely where I wasn't even able to finish it. During class time she said this was on purpose so students don't cheat. You were only able to do good on the exam if you attended the class > the notes she posts on blackboard are only half the notes, she shows inside the class. Final assignment was overwhelming.
Janne is one of the most caring profs in the CRJS faculty. Her assignments and tests may seem overwhelming but she marks fairly and gives good feedback. Her lectures are amazing and always has stories to tell.
those who wrote negative reviews obviously did not attend class. If you attend class, YOU WILL PASS. Janne's assignments may seem overwhelming, however if you attend lectures you will clearly understand what is being assigned of you. Janne grades especially easily, just do the work! Janne is an awesome prof and her classes were a pleasure.
Janne's lectures are so insightful and exciting to attend. You will learn a lot during her lectures, and she also tells you what will be on the midterm during her lessons. Her midterms are challenging, but she's an easy marker. She is a fantastic prof, and I would differently recommend taking a class with her.
Was super excited to take this class, but ended extremely disappointed. Unclear instructions on every assignment and test, and is rude when asked anything over email. Would not recommend.
Lot's of the negative comments are coming from lazy students who don't put in the hard work to get good grades. Easy marker and all assessments are fair game. Show up to class and follow the assignment guidelines. Not very interesting course but important one to have.
She marks hard and does not give clear instructions on her assignments. I did well in this class, but she marked the final project as if I were an expert. The material is somewhat dull, but some of it is useful. She is not very approachable and is pretty rude when asking questions.
Since this class is mandatory to the crim just degree and Dr Holmgren is the only prof, don't let the horrible reviews scare you too much. She's quite disorganized with her lecture material and what she's looking for in her assignments. However, if you read the textbook and attend class, you'll be okay. Her comments can seem rude but she marks easy
Holmgren is my favourite prof within crim. People seem to not like her because they do poor on her assignments or they don't like her teaching style. Yet she is very blunt with her expectations and getting a good grade is not hard. If you talk in class or send her an email, you will see how considerate, kind and helpful she actually is.
Holmgren inspired us all in her classes last semester and I missed her this term. Take classes with her, she is the best!
Didn't let me hand in my midterm via email after D2L had a glitch that wouldn't let me hand it in, was very rude when I asked her about it and has ghosted me for 5 hours now. Tests are ridiculously hard, goes over about 5% of the study guide in the midterm, expects you to know every single detail. TESTS ARE A TIME CRUNCH. i wish we could avoid her
- hard midterm, 20 cases, 2 hrs only, multiple choice and written for all chapters (5+) - lecture-heavy, material loaded - hard marker - few assignments
Vague paper expectations, boring lectures, unclear guidelines, papers were HARD (writing only one theory for 6 pages explaining a certain case). BEST TIP: DO NOT HAVE HER AS YOUR PROF!!!
Gives useless feedback. Purposely makes midterm test unable to be finished by students (set up so you get 70%). Boring lectures. Says "uh" and "you know" alot to the point that it's the things I remember from her lectures. Tip is to just avoid her at all cost. Makes you suffer in her tests. 1 paper, 1 midtrm, a big HW (presentation and paper).
She is a tough marker, and her tests are unfair. She gave us 2hours to do a midterm with 120questions(some MC, some SA). I did not finish in time.
Janne is not a good professor. She seems like the prof that does not care about her students. If you want to be put into a panic attack, then write her midterm. The time crunch is impossible for students; 2 hours for a 120-point midterm with multiple choice and SA worth 3-6 marks each is psychotic.
This class is easy if you put in the work. Dont be intimated by the other reviews. Put in the work and you'll do just fine on the midterm. People are complaining about the length and time, but if you actually ready and pay attention, half of the questions will be mere common knowledge. Outstanding professor!
Janne Holmgren is an extremely hard marker. I was forced to take her class online and forced you to read her own textbook which is VERY poorly written. Her tests are borderline impossible and didn't set her students up for any kind of success. Poor demonstrator of favoritism and all around, avoid her like the bubonic plague. 0/10
Unfortunately, this online course is required for the criminal justice program. Her exam was ridiculously difficult to finish and she blamed the students who didn't do very well. She is not a helpful grader for papers, when you go to her for feedback she'll make passive-aggressive comments which makes you feel uncomfortable to reach out to her.
I'm going to be honest with you guys. that exam was rough and only a few people in our class ended up doing good. she is a hard marker but she makes the guidelines clear so as long as you talk to her and ask her to look over your paper before handing it in you'll be fine. she is really passive aggressive at times and it shows,, but its okay tbh
I wish this class wasn't required for the program, I wouldn't have taken it if I didn't have to. She is super passive aggressive and is constantly comparing the class to others and her past students. The exam for this class is hardly possible. I did good on it but if you take more than a few seconds to think, you'll do badly.
I showed up to every class, asked questions, & ended with a great grade. But my god, the passive aggressive attitude was baffling. Some concepts were very clear, but her lecture slides are only a bit useful. Ask yourself what you learn after paying attention to her lecture and you'll understand why you feel as if you learn nothing useful at the end
marks assignments unfairly possibly without the prof even reading them. unfortunately one class is mandatory with her or I would say avoid this prof at all costs!
Janne is strict, but a wonderful professor. I gained so much in this class. The first assignment was marked like it was a masters program. Afterwards everything was fine. I learned tremendously in her class, yet was saddened by my first mark, which even getting 90% throughout semester couldn't get me an A- grade. I was 1% off from A- grade.
if you dont want to rethink your whole life, do not take this professor. unfortunately, she's mandatory for at least 1 class of CRJS but after her midterm, I have never wanted to die more and DURING IT!
Unfortunately this class is only taught by her. But if you can avoid her for any other class AVOID HER! The midterm for this class makes you think your whole life choices and regret them so bad. Like the midterm is all written with only 2 hours to write it. The test is open book but, you genuinely can't finish the exam because its all written.
Terrible Prof do not take if you don't need too. Midterm was almost impossible, many people did not finish. She does not give the whole class to do it as well. You are forced to buy a textbook that SHE wrote for the class, it is filled with spelling errors and technically deemed not an academic source by her peers.
For being the only prof available for Forensic Interviewing, she is the WORST!! Textbook is essentially a scheme to get money by forcing students to pay over $100 for the most unacademic piece of literature. Exam is extremely unfair and impossible to complete within the allotted time. Save yourself the headache and the villain arc this causes.
speechless....
Midterm was difficult and many people did not finish it as we were not given the full class time. Many individuals asked for the full class time, instead she kept the two hours. Avoid her if you can!! Taking the midterm personally caused me stressed to the point I was hitting my head to think.
If possible, avoid Janne. Her textbook, written by her, isn't the slightest bit academic, but she claims it's amazing since she wrote it. Her midterm is awful, given 2 hours for an exam that would be hard to finish in 3. Also, an interviewing class being online? Interesting. Overall Janne is a hard marker that gives horrible feedback. AVOID HER.
This class is crazy hard. For the midterm you are given a short amount of time for way to many questions. The questions are very hard as well. Janne is not a kind and respectful proessor, she seems to not care about her students whatsoever. Someone needs to seriously reconsider her job as a professor for this course.
You will FAIL the midterm it's all written with only 2 hours to complete it which most students didn't even finish as she was so much detail and explanation for each question but not enough time is given.
She used her own book which costs $200 and there are lots of errors. The class duration is 3 hours but the duration for exam which consists of 17 short answers and 8MC was 2 hours which was not enough time to complete. We asked her to extend time to the regular class hours but she refused.
AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. She made me question my sanity. Her class is online and she teaches the class terribly. She takes marks off of papers for little errors, her midterm made the whole class hate her, didn't allow the whole class time, loaded it with questions, even added chapters that we didn't go over. Run for your life. I pray for you.
Her midterm is heavily written without the proper time to complete, and she's not willing to accommodate. She expects nearly 3000 words for discussion posts without properly communicating guidelines before it's due. The fact that a forensic interviewing class is ONLINE is wild, avoid her if you can!!
I'm convinced she only teaches so she can monetize off of the textbook she wrote despite it contradicting her own lectures. Clear up your schedule whenever her discussion posts rolls around as they are truly just 10 page essays. Midterm will leave you with trauma, 2 hours given to answer 17 written questions. My advice? Run.
If you want to be in a class with a prof that accommodates, understands and values the principles of learning then i suggest you to listen carefully and run before you're stuck here writing a review like we all did.
You'd think a prof would learn after multiple years of seeing students complain about little time on the midterm and seeing students do poorly as a result. Unfortunately, she simply cannot be bothered enough to care and that's all you should know. If you think you're here to learn, think again. If you think she cares about you, you're deeply wrong
As a mandatory class, I'm incredibly disappointed in her teaching style and the class structure. She lacks giving supportive feedback and doesn't provide her expectations clearly. She expects a heavy amount of writing and content in her extensive discussion posts and her midterm is the heaviest exam I've written. Avoid taking her to save your GPA!!
The lectures are unorganized as she jumps from one thing to another. Most of the time she cant get through her powerpoint slides, even though each class is 3 hours long. The textbook is written by her and it contradicts her lectures. The midterm was literally impossible to finish. She has unfair expectations and doesn't care about students :(
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE PROF she doesn't even know what she's teaching half of the time. She contradicts her own textbook and doesn't even explain things properly she jumps back and forth and never finishes the lecture before time she takes the whole 3 hours and still doesn't finish teaching the lecture
Just a downright traumatic experience with this teacher. If I were to go back in time to my younger self, and only say one thing, it would be to never take Janne. A two hour midterm that would still be incredibly hard with the full lecture time is just really mean :(
Midterm is the worst test I've taken in uni yet. She doesn't actually teach and consistently goes over the class time. Her class is mandatory but if you ever have an option DONT TAKE HER CLASS
I am appalled by how unorganized she is, from her lectures to the textbook she wrote herself. I was excited to learn the content, but it became disheartening because of how unclear and messy she is. Her expectation for discussion boards is AWFUL and the midterm was abysmal, not giving us the full lecture time when all of it was written answers.
I lost all hopes and dreams after taking this course.
RUN AWAY.... RUNNNNN AWAYYY... TERRIBLE CLASS
AVOID THIS PROF IF YOU CAN SHE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH
SHE MADE THE WHOLE CLASS CRY BECAUSE OF HER UNREALISTIC, UNREASONABLE MIDTERM THAT WAS ALL WRITTEN WITH UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO FINISH.
THIS CLASS MADE ME RETHINK MY SANITY
I learned nothing from this class and she doesn't know how to teach and explain. This class had so much potential yet it turned out to be absolute garbage because its online with a prof that doesn't know what she's saying and is terrible at teaching. She sets her students up for failure with her unrealistic expectation.
RUN JUST RUN!!
Course is based on the textbook. Each chapter is 40-60 pages long plus additional readings she assigns. It is also very poorly written, with vauge terminology and badly explained concepts. There are also some outdated (and sometimes offensive) terms used, such as 'aspergers' in ch. 7. She also expects you to write a 10 page essay for every 'post.'
The midterm exam was 17 written responses and 8 MC in two hours. She told the class to do the higher valued questions first as we might not have enough time to finish the exam. You need to buy her textbook for the course, which is extremely poorly written and has major errors in every textbook, not to mention overpriced. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Would not recommend prof, content is not teached well, it is hard to understand what she is trying to explain. Midterm very difficult to complete in 2 hours. No final exam but a very hard video presentation at the end of the course. Maybe if another prof teaches this class may end better.
Her textbook is garbage and filled with spelling mistakes, but will deduct marks if you make a singular spelling mistake. Her "discussion posts" are really just essays in disguise, and you get assigned three of them!! She makes the class 1000x more difficult than it needs to be while spewing the most pointless information. Janne is my #1 opp.
I tried to like her but as the semester went on, it just got worse. You email her for help on an assignment and she belittles you and compares you to other students. She is nefarious, like thanos snapping away the students will to live. Poof
I emailed her and she responded with an extremely passive aggressive response. She compared me to other students. I emailed based on her feedback which didn't make sense, I asked for clarification and the only response I got was “you can't expect me to give you feedback on everything.” Way too rude and unprofessional to be teaching university.
Makes the class buy a textbook written by HERSELF because no one else is touching that dumpster fire. Deducts marks over the tiniest errors; like how dare you write "reference" instead of "references." She simply does not care about her students. Get ready to question why you are taking this degree, because Janne has that effect!
A 3 hour online class she tends to use half of that time to either go over the course content from the previous week or assignments leaving no time for the new material. Her midterm is stressful and too complex for only 2 hours given. She wants you to use the textbook she wrote and will only give 100 grades to those who use it. Avoid if you can!
don't do it.
i DONT like the way she flicks her tongue. zont zo it.
