She comes across as a little rude at first, but she is really nice. She is a good professor, but is having trouble adapting Intro to American politics to a third year comprehension level. I am sure that she will improve on this as she finds out what third yerar Canadian students know about American politics to begin with, and what they don't.
She came off as scary the first day, and the courseload seemed extreme, but dont let this scare you. I think she's great, really funny and engaging, my only complaint is that we don't go into any critical analysis of American theories or legislation. She is really smart, and surely has the capability to do this, but I feel like she's holding back!
Ha, I think that she is great. While the material wasn't terribly challenging, Dr. A is a great lady. And don't think about giggling or talking during class, she'll lay the 'smack' down on you. She caught one chick giggling during her lec. at the begining of the term, and Dr. A was quick to tell her to 'shut up' or leave...that is my kind of prof!
This teach is schmokin!!!

I agree that this coures was not as challenging as it could be, but Dr. Aragon explains that, in the US, this would be a first year course. Nonetheless, I found that, when it comes to the paper, she rewards critical thinking. She is an excellent Prof who encourages class discussion, marks fairly, and rewards good attendence. The course was great!
Very unstructured lectures and unclear about which subject matter is relavent. While she is personable and entertaining, some of our assignments ("Town Hall Meetings") were slightly undermining for a third year course.
A very engaging professor who makes class fun. She is witty and wants you to do well on the exams and papers. Always available in office hours and gives you 'heads up' on examinable material. Given that she has young kids and teaches a lot I found her prepared for class and brought movies, presentations and snacks to class - great prof, cute too!
Dr. Aragon was an awesome prof and the fact that she was both from America and of Latino descent gave her an interesting perspective in a Canadian school.
Very enjoyable course, very enjoyable prof. She's funny and gives you cupcakes! Knowledgeable and a fair marker, but also strict on the guidelines she sets out and expects a high level of achievement.
A fair prof. Tough on the nitty gritty details though. Follow every little detail she says and if unsure, ask. She is really nice and passionate about the material.
This was the first prof I've had in University where I actually questioned her credentials! Discussions were a veritable free-for-all, there was little to no direction from her, and some of the reading material bordered absurdity. I would not recommend WS with her.
Extremely effective professor. One of UVic's best, and exactly how college professors should be. She grades tough, but fair. She's expert and active in her field, but also interested in education and effective as an educator. She encourages additional interest in the subject being taught and values differing perspectives. Fantastic.
Very, very disappointing for a University teacher.
I think that Dr. Aragon is a very intelligent women. Her class was difficult but enjoyable. The only aspect of it that I could not stand was her clear preference of some students over others. It seems like she formed personal relationships outside of class with some students and those were the ones who received the most praise and attention.
Excellent professor, excellent class. Best I have taken at UVIC. Go to her office hours people, it makes a world of difference. Don't be intimidated by an assertive female professor and a class with "gender" in the title boys, chances are if you are hesitant to take this class, you need to be in it! One thing we needed though? a COURSEPACK!!!

Prof.Aragon was an excellent prof! Very helpful and nice, but attendance is mandatory, if you skip a couple of classes, she could take 5% off of your final mark...so make sure you attend class!! Other than that, the lectures were always based on the readings from the textbook.
Very helpful, fair marker. Cares about her students.
Takes office hours really seriously. Works hard for students. Really knows material. Love this prof!
Brutal Prof. She started off her American Politics class by saying that if there were any Americans in the class, they might as well drop it right now. She didn't even know what a county was! She turned what was supposed to be a fairly objective class into an Anti-Bush/Anti-American lecture. She is very disrespectful if you don't share her views.
This class had interesting topics but she executed them terribly. In a class all about acceptance of others and new ways of thinking she devalued any opinion other than her own. I never spoke in class even though participation is part of grade. Hated coming and would never take her again.
Really nice helpful prof but attendance is mandatory!! she will take off 5% if you don't attend
wonderful teacher. tough market but very fair and really helpful out of class time. extremely organized and presents the information well. usually her courses have quite a bit of reading.
I hated every second, of every day that I had to sit through this horrific class. Not only are her lectures straight to the book, shes quite possibly the most demanding prof I have ever had. Sure she offers office hours, not that taking your paper to her helps your grade to much. Overall, I WOULD NOT suggest taking a course with her
great!
Aragon is an amazing prof. I have gone out of my way in the past to take courses with her. She is a bit of a tough marker, but very fair and offers helpful advice. She it witty, sharp, and a feminist to the core, which I love. I hope to take more upper level courses with her in the future.
There is a high workload, but Aragon is an honest marker and your effort will be reflected in your grade. This isn't a free ride, but she makes it easy to participate in class and encourages a lot of dialogue. Beware: tricky pop quizzes are meant to ensure you do your readings.
hard but fair. open minded, lots of office hours.
Lots of interesting perspectives and very knowledgeable and smart. Seems tough at first but with hard work and participation you can earn her respect.Definitley would take another class my favorite prof at uvic!
My absolute favourite prof at Uvic. If you do the work, your grade will reflect it. Go to her office hours.. she'll edit your whole paper for you!! and, she brings cookies, what could be better.
She is an excellent teacher. Although she is a fairly hard marker, you will learn a lot in any of her courses. She lectures on almost every reading and really goes through to make it clear for students. She is always available to help out of class. She is clear, organized, and fair.
While Dr. Aragon's teaching style is unorthodox, she provides incredible insight into the material. If you earn her respect her classes are intellectually rewarding. While she is very difficult marker on exams/essays she does provide "freebie" marks ie: library assignments/facebook/participation - so she isn't a GPA buster for good students.
Dr. Aragon is spectacular! Loved every minute of her classes and the readings were most enlightening. Work was manageable and she was a fair marker. Great teacher, great class.
Top notch prof who marries theory and practice and enjoins it to our experience & popular culture. One of the few Poli Sci profs at UVic who can move outside the departmental preoccupation with theory and include gender in her syllabus. Some of the fellas should attend her class and learn!Tremendous work ethic, fine lecturer & informative marker.
Love this professor! She is definitely one of my fav! She is not afraid to call students on their**** ie> the students who raise their hands only because they like hearing their own voices- we've all been there before!
While everyone is attracted to her "chip on her shoulder", "no BS" style, she lacks the openness to consider that her opinions are not shared between everyone in the world. I found her incredibly narrow minded and hostile to anyone who would challenge something she said. She needs to leave her agendas at home and teach from a objective perspective.
Can't complain about her teaching methods because they are great - very structured and organized. However, enormous amounts of reading that we weren't tested on, either likes you or hates you, is either happy one day or snappy the next, and can be disrespectful towards certain opinions. Overall, not worth it when there are *way* better profs at UVi
A good speaker, interesting readings, hard marker, either likes you or hates you (clear preference of some students over others), and can be disrespectful towards certain opinions.
Dr. Aragon would have to be one of the best at UVic. She is very intellectual and really keeps up with the current events! She is a fair marker if you put in the effort. I admire her punctuality and time management skills the best!
Amazing woman
nice woman, HARD marker and HIGH expecations for first year course. Does not clearly state what we need to know, or what she is expecting of us. Exam straight forward, but when marking says 'need more examples' and need to elaborate. yet exam just says LIST. very interesting and interactive material, but WAY TO challenging for a first year course
Very real, understanding and down to earth, (but does not take crap from students!) Show that you're there to learn and get an easy mark from an enthusiastic, knowledgeable prof. Lots of baked goods/candy! Tells you EXACTLY what will be on tests. Overall, makes class fun and the information sticks. Would definitely take a class with her again.
Dr.Aragon is fantastic: very friendly, very willing to help, and encourages questions. I agree that she has high expectations, but she is more than willing to help, esp. for midterm prep. However, come prepared with your questions and have a bit of background information because she clearly states that she isn't going to spoonfeed.
Wow. Amazing teacher. She made 830 am classes painless. Spends a lot of time preparing for class and marking papers/exams. Very easy on the eyes as well :)
Interesting class. Janni only taught a few classes but she was very helpful during office hours. She is very easy on the easy too.
stickler for proper formatting
Well-prepared, makes great cookies, likes her work, likes us!
Expectations are EXTREMELY high for a first year intro course. Expects die hard commitment to the course from her students (to an unrealistic extent). Is extremely unforgiving with marking, especially for exams - can't remember that one minute of class where we discussed a vague concept? Well she can, and you will be tested on it.
Aragon expects her students to do badly, and grades extremely harshly for a first year course. She tested concepts we never covered in class and will snap at you if you ask her a question or to meet. Ask her for help, she'll say you're on the right track, don't change a thing... then give you a B-. Will suck your interest in Poli right out.
Best professor I've had in my entire stint here at Uvic! Wouldn't seem hard to all of you first years if you laid off the booze and parties and actually put in some effort. Excellent reference, wonderful instructor, thanks for a great 4 years Prof. A!!
I found her very intimidating. She offered office hours and help, but if you approached her with reasonable questions she made you feel like an idiot or refused to answer. She graded far too hard for a first-year class and had unrealistic expectations (and I say this as a keener). My grade did not reflect my effort.
Great prof, very enthusiastic and interesting. She is very nice and extremely helpful in her office hours.
Can't help but notice most of the people complaining about the marking are from 103, where the TAs actually did the majority of the marking, at least in the fall term. I found Aragon to be helpful and engaging and her exams were fairly straight-forward. She does expect complete answers but is an effective prof for first years.
Dr. Aragon is a great prof. She will challenge you and in the end it will make you a better student. She is extremely helpful and accessible both in office hours and through email. USE HER OFFICE HOURS and listen attentively to what she says when you go. Unlike some profs she will prepare you for the demands of grad school and the real world.
The sassy political science prof! She's very helpful, energetic, passionate, and to-the-point. When she did teach class (team taught course) I didn't fall asleep once.
While Prof A was a good professor and made herself available to her students and was very helpful this is a team taught course and by the end of it you will be confused and tuning things out. Questions for midterm and essay were way too vague. While I would take another course with Prof A this course was garbage and not worth taking at all. AVOID.
Team taught course - marks are for Aragon's part only. My TA was amazing, exam requirements were clear, the paper was 6 pages, and marking was fair. All pretty reasonable for a 103 course. But the team teaching was disjointed and sometimes terrible. At the end it's hard to figure out the broad ideas of what you were supposed to have learned.
Aragon is a cross-listed prof with the Women's Studies department and it shows. She also described herself as a 'lame dog democrat' meaning that she would vote for a lame dog Dem before anyone else. A warning for conservative or right-leaning Liberals out there, don't try to counter her points with your own, she just rudely dismisses you.
She was extremely nice and offered help. 103 was a team thought course and Aragon was only organizing it and supporting the students. Very hard marker, but she cared about the students and made sure they succeeded. She is great!
I found Aragon to be very dismissive during office hours, her comments on written work to be rushed and vague, and her treatment of students and their work to be based on favoritism. She's an efficient and enthusiastic teacher (marks were returned promptly) but the effort I put into this class was not reflected in my mark. Really disappointing.
Most useless teacher I've ever had. I was going to do a Poli Sci major, but she is the reason why i didn't. She thinks the world of herself, when in fact she is a terrible teacher. I gave her $500, and I came out with nothing but hatred for Political Science. Her marking was outrageous, and she expected way to much from a first year course.
1-5 scale doesn't reflect the course. Shrill, inflated ego, condescending, dismissive, hard marker. Doesn't understand that her view might not be the only option. Caters to 3rd/4th year students who are fulfilling a program requirement, not to first years taking this 100-level course. On the plus side my TA was insanely overqualified, and hot too.
I have nothing but good things to say about Janni, and cannot list them in 350 characters. I would take every one of her courses if I wasn't restricted by graduation deadlines.
Dr. Aragon is an AMAZING prof. She marked 117 essay proposals in one night, had 100% written midterms back in a week in a class of 250 and is super nice and extremely helpful in office hours. Don't listen to the haters, they're probably the people that never tried in class and their mark showed for it - you get out of the course what you put in.
As a prof she knows her stuff, but I agree that she tends to focus on the 3rd/4th years. I was marked harder in this class than my polisci classes in the 200-range. She is helpful but I would suggest avoiding this class since its team-taught, take 101 instead, but I would take one of her upper-year courses. Also, the textbook is awful.
Janni is the best! I recommend everyone who is interested in poli sci to take her courses. She is not a hard marker, she is fair. If you work hard, and attend her class you'll do excellent. It is an honour to be in her class. She will learn your name and things about yourself. Also she is funny and has a great personality!
Took as an elective but found the course to be extremely hard&demanding for 1st year level. Lectures&Textbooks have nothing in common, exam q's are distributed in advance but way too difficult and can't possible incorporate the course materials. TAs were great, Aragon was just ok. Wouldn't recommend taking unless you're a Polo-Sci student.
As a second year I found this course to be a bit more demanding than expected, considering I took it for an elective. It's an interesting course if you're looking for an intro into what poli sci is about- looks at the main areas of poli. dont slack off, get her to read over your papers before theyre due for good feedback.
Wow, is the best word to describe Dr. Aragon. Hands down, she is the best teacher in the Political Science Department. Oh, and if that didn't entice you to take one of her classes, did I mention she's smokin'? Seriously though, she's an amazing professor, resource, and person. TAKE HER CLASSES FOLKS.
335 was probably my favorite course this semester, it was absolutely excellent; Prof. A did a wonder job. Be prepared to do actually do the readings for once for there are lots of them and are critical for the way the course is designed.
Encouraging, supportive prof that doesn't put up with any BS from students. Sometimes a bit short with students in class, esp. if he or she asks a question that has already been answered, or starts making generalizations about feminists or feminism. She's a strong personality- love her or hate her. In my case, LOVE her and highly recommend!
She is clear on what her expectations are of you from the very beginning and is always willing to help you if you just ask!
I felt the textbook was a bit too much for a first year course: that book is DENSE and a very tough read. I found the textbook easier to understand AFTER the lectures. Dr. Aragon was great! Very helpful if you ask. Attend every class or you will be left far behind.
Dr. Aragon is helpful, knowledgeable, and usually personable. My one complaint is that I find her constant twitter updates regarding students to be unprofessional at best. Exams are fair, no surprises. The itself course is very interesting, however the text book is horrible: way too dense for a 1st year course and very hard to follow.
I would not recommend Poli 103 to any first year students. The information from the three different modules is not well integrated, and Dr. Aragon is very obnoxious and irritable. She lacks clarity and poise; avoid at all costs
Sassy, personable, very accessible. A prof with opinions which can be both refreshing or too much. Social media overload! I liked the class & what we covered, but ultimately I learned very little from the class itself. She didn't lecture in it so you were left with your classmates opinions instead of her knowledge. Too many readings. Hard marker!
She's a good prof as long as you do it her way. Not too hard of a first year course.
Prepare to read lots! I personally found the textbook a bit difficult for a first year course. The workload was reasonable. Gave us all possible exam questions, which was fair. It's a group-taught course and I wish Dr. Aragon had lectured more because the I found the other lectures quite confusing at certain times.
Overall good prof. This is made for third or fourth year students so second years may find it a little difficult but if you attend class and go to her for help then you will not be disappointed in what you get. Put the effort in and and a good grade will be the result. Very knowledgeable overall.
She doesn't do alot of the teaching in this course, but whenever I had to contact her, she was super snippy and incredibly rude. The textbook is definitely helpful for the first module, but not the third. The second just confused the heck out of me. I will never take another poli sci class because of this one.
Do not take this course! The lectures were incredibly confusing and the contents of the textbooks were much too dense. Avoid!
Dr. Aragon is the bomb and she knows it. Most criticisms on this page come from first year poli sci students with zero credibility. Aragon is by far the best professor at Uvic, and makes learning very personable and interesting. Definitely recommend this professor to anyone.
Dr. Aragon is the best prof I've had. I'll definitely be taking a class with her again. She is very engaging, helpful and hilarious. I feel as though she has a strong respect for students despite being very opinionated; I felt free to be myself in class, and felt like I could express myself in an uncensored way, even in assignments, like the blogs
Someone give this woman a gold medal! She's not only the best prof in the poli sci dept, she's probably one of the best prof's I've ever had. Glad I decided to take the last class of my degree with her.
Liked her a lot. Tests are based off of the text book so if you dont want to do the readings and take notes on them dont take her classes. I would recommend getting her to like you--I've heard from others you'll run into trouble if she doesn't. Did not seem tough to get in the A range for me but its a first year class so who knows
Great prof! Very strongly opinionated, very feminist, very american; but it doesn't affect the class negatively. Fantastic, brings so much energy to the course, and is so passionate in everything. Is very specific about what she wants from students, and is a very hard marker, but it makes you a better writer. Take courses with her, won't regret it
Dr. Aragon is a fantastic professor. She is always willing to help, and is incredibly compassionate. Her passion for the subject area is unparalleled, and if you go to her office and show her that you care about the topic matter, it will resonate with her.
Not a first year student, still unimpressed with Aragon. You display the slightest bit of intelligence to counter her beliefs and she'll squash you like a bug. Rude, snippy, disrespectful and the course itself was unorganized and unclear. Will not motivate you to continue Poli Sci.
I really liked Aragon, however I liked her as a person rather then a teacher. She demands respect which is good and is very opinionated, which was good for me because we share the same opinions, sadly those who do not agree with her opinions will not have a fun time with her.
Aragon is an interesting lecturer, however, she is an unreasonably hard marker in some respects. For example, on an attendance grade for a single day of class, if you went you got 85% and if you didn't you got 0%. If you want to get A+'s, avoid her classes.
Poor instructor. No clear. Doesn't like to engage class. Do not take her.
While Dr. Aragon's lessons at the lower level can be a bit tiresome and she obviously doesn't want to be there, her upper level courses are completely fantastic. She is extremely passionate about her areas of study and conveys complicated and controversial ideas with ease. Skip Poli103 and go straight to her upper level courses!
This instructor did not impress me. The class was pretty boring. Mostly what I learned is how easy it is for some to make their career criticizing others. The material seemed neat and the textbooks were pretty good, what I browsed of them. I'd take it again with a different prof. Not a hard A though. Ignore the juvenile lectures and you're good.
Good Class, Dr Aragon is a tough marker but very helpfull in office hours.
I was in poli 103 with her and two other 300 level courses. First year is tuff as it is but once you take an upper level with Prof.A you won't regret it!!!! She will go above and beyond for her students. Also, use her office hours and talk in class even if its one comment a week.
She comes off as intimidating but she is pretty great. Tough marker and wants her students to dig deeper than just the course textbook. You have to apply what you learn. Her office hours are quick and always packed - but she's there for you. Can be blunt but I never found her cocky. Hard to get high grade though! Tough exterior, soft interior. :)
Dr. Aragon is a fantastic professor. Her lectures are clear and engaging, and she provides helpful feedback on assignments. No exams in upper level courses which is great as it allows for greater application of knowledge. Huge technology focus through blogs and Twitter use. Lots of work, but provides unique insight into feminism.
A great professor. A bit intimidating but I am sure it is easier to talk to her than it seems. Although I didn't really talk to her much I can tell from her lectures and posts online that she is a very helpful professor who is devoted to her students. She provides great advise in classes and helpful information and links online.
Dr. Aragon is a really good professor, who provides a lot of support and information to students. Her lectures are interesting. She takes class time serious and makes sure that there are no interruptions (no one texting, using fb, walking in front of the class) - rules that many found too harsh and unnecessary but others appreciated.
Comes across as arrogant. You really know you are an undergrad, as she treats you as not 'worthy'. Her knowledge of the subject matter is average, along with her teaching skills.
Good teacher, passionate, engaging and great use of technology. Put the effort and it will be returned. TS in itself wasn't an 'academic' class per se which I think really influenced my opinion. Really enjoyed the course. Attend class, read the syllabus and do the course readings, and you'll be set.
Professor Aragon is an engaging and devoted professor. She posts videos and helpful links in order to further your understanding of the material. Can occasionally come across as intimidating, but make sure to see her in office hours. She is extremely helpful and will assist you as much as she can.
Prof. Aragon was extremely efficient for responding back to emails and extremely helpful when you go to her office hours. You definitely have to work hard for the assignment and the exams. I would take another class with her again as she is a wonderful prof.
I like this course insofar as the material it's supposed to be about. I'd recommend the class under a different prof, though. This instructor seems too focused on her own ideologies and activism to effectively help a broad range of students pick up the curriculum.
I'm going to be completely honest. Her ego seems a little big. It got in the way of me really loving her. But she is very passionate about her subject, and a good teacher. Tries to be funny from time to time but her superiority in the classroom makes her actually good jokes less funny. It's weird. She's good though.
Unprofessional, arrogant and self-important. Mocks first year students in upper level classes, which is distasteful. Although classes can be interesting, assignments, like posting on wikipedia, are a waste of time. Fair marker, helpful but her "casual" style concerning professor-student interactions are tiresome.
Dr. Aragon, as an individual, is pretty cool. I find her super blunt and to the point: every time you ask her a question it seems that you're annoying her. Easily distracted. Also, spend more time showing your students, in class, how to properly do an assignment. Don't just tell us to find a book in the library to help us. Wouldn't take again.
I'm a left-leaning, senior student, but I couldn't get behind this prof's teaching style. How we're supposed to learn in such an environment, I don't know. I recommend close reading to succeed academically, but this course outwardly appears to offer a more dynamic experience than that, so I was very disappointed.
Worldly, dynamic, funny, expressive, interesting facts, explains concepts well, gave us opportunities for extra credit with attending seminars. Helpful with answering questions in her office. Upbeat and passionate with her teachings and how power concepts are related. The difference between a parliament and a president was a fascinating subject!
Poor professor. Only cares about advancing her own left wing ideals. Avoid at all costs.
Needs to step it up a bit. Left leaning ideology is no substitute for critical thinking. Treats some students more equally than others (in an attempt to promote her own ideologies). Avoid if you don't want to be profiled by this woman.
The "student-led discussions" worth 20% of our grade were more prof-dictated discussions. She really pushed people's topics to where she thought they should go. Pretty critical of students and their work or ideas.
Assigns fairly high grades, but is ultimately an unpleasant instructor. She does not miss an opportunity to criticize students and colleagues in class and on social media. This absence of ethical standards is concerning.
Love this woman, but I would never take another class with her. Who better to teach about US politics, right? Wrong. Still don't know what the class was about. Had to maintain blogs about random candidates but because she didn't explain what she wanted, she spent many classes elaborating. Seemed to try to sell herself more than teach the material.
A very global and intelligent professor. Very much in touch with progressive politics as opposed to only modern politics.
Janni was unfortunately extremely unapproachable - the moment you made eye contact she already seemed annoyed. She would cut me off when I tried to ask questions, even if they were directly relevant. For a condensed course it was even more packed than most - 4 books to read. Grading was inconsistent and ruthless. Would not take again.
Janni was probably the worst prof I have had yet. She had absolutely no respect for her students and would spend most of the class talking about herself. She assigned four textbooks, which weren't actually needed. Complete waste of money. Her lectures were completely unprepared. I have learned more from facebook posts than I did from her lectures.
Great prof! Very intelligent, sparks intellectual conversations, respectful and encouraging of students, likes class participation, and very approachable. However, she is a tough marker, definitley looks for that "over and above" and key insights into class concepts. brought in great guest lectures.
Shes a great professor when it comes to TA (Technology and Society) classes. But I also had her for PoliSci and didnt like her there. She is very strongly opinionated towards feminism and certain very liberal things. If she wants you to write about women or a minor group in a country, she expects you to say theyre oppressed. No exceptions.
Prof A has shown amazing compassion and care for her students during this COVID-19 pandemic. She is flexible and kind, allowing students to choose how theyd like to finish the semester. Is her teaching style a bit scattered and unclear? Yes. But you will never meet another prof that cares for her students the way she does. A real gem.
Between strikes and COVID this semester has been wild. I've never had such a flexible professor. Prof. A genuinely cares about her students and she is one of few professors that teaches extremely well. She teaches you about the real world not just outdated text. If you're disrespectful she will call you out. Also make sure you go to class.
She cares SO much about her students. She is very accessible outside of class and wants to see you succeed - don't be afraid to ask for help. She is very left wing, and sometimes she prevents 'opinions' as 'facts'. The assignments were interesting and varied which made the class more enjoyable.
Janni is a fantastic prof!. I appreciated how much she cares for her students, and she's very flexible and understanding. I don't know if I've ever had a prof who seemed to care so much about me as a person as opposed to just as a student. I didn't use the textbooks much, but they were required for the final paper.
many problems with the teacher and the course, the cours e has literally no structure. It even looks like the professor just appropriate someone else's course outline or something Im currently in her class and dont recommend she is also super inconsistent in what she tells the class and whats written on paper All negative reviews are so accurate
I spent time looking at my homework and Janni took marks off which is OK but the PROBLEM IS SHE CONTRADICTED HER OWN ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS and what was verbalized to all of the students, so horrible, and aside from her rude attitude toward uvic students, she didn't design the course properly
Choose wisely if you read this i have never been so intimidated by a professor Prof A made this course incredibly stressful and difficult with how she treats students, the course isnt hard, but can get hard when kindness is missing
Very nice instructor to student but not suitable to teach
Spends most of lecture talking about herself. Assignment aren't helpful and requirements are unclear. If you are desperate for an upper level elective that you will get a good grade in then it's definitely an option... but I don't recommend it.
Here are the good things about the course It is about race and tech which are both very important given social unrest in today's worldThe bad things about the courseIt is poorly designed, has a litany of grammar errors, and therefore making the instructions not legible, etcetc etcThe good things about the instructorseemsnice.
All the 1 star ratings couldnt be further from the truth. Ive taken several classes with Prof. Aragon. She truly cares about her students and makes extra time to answer questions and go over assignments. Her response to teaching through the pandemic has been guided by kindness. Provides extensions, teaches practical skills, and fun assignments!
I have taken other courses with prof. a and every undergrad should know she cares so much about her students, is extremely flexible in so many ways, super understanding, but the course doesnt have structure and good pedagogy or technique and wouldnt recommend if im being honest to myself and other people
Shes very polite, empathetic, and incredibly understanding even though im not a fan of the assignments and the lack of clear grading guidelines but all in all not too bad
majority of comments are sadly accurate but giving prof.a a 1.0 seems a bit inaccurate. Prof. a cares alot for each student in her class and it really shows in lectures, super intelligent too!
I would not recommend this course for any student it was a nightmare a true nightmare and im looking forward to Christmas and the new year because of this horrendous experienceNever taking a course with Prof. A again
One of the biggest mistakes of my life committed to dealing with this prof and a horribly taught course I will never ever take another course with this prof This was my second course with her and will be the last I am literally encouraged to give this prof a 0 so disappointed
I would without a single doubt take this course again because prof. a was the nicest prof you will ever have But ill only take this course on the condition that it be redesigned and clear grading rubrics be handed out It seems like the rubrics and everything supplemental are deliberately made obscure
Prof a will care for you in front of other students but she will mock you and tilt her head to the ceiling and laugh at you so horrible horrible and horrible
It's discouraging to see poor reviews. We all can agree that Prof A was flexible&kind- especially in a pandemic. However, few reviews extend the same gesture back to her. Who cares about grammatical errors&some disorganization rn? I found assignments were engaging&clear&analysis heavy. IE a normal 300 level- she can't teach you how to analyze...
Firstly this course was BY FAR the hardest course you will take and this is so evidently compounded by just the way the prof answers questions It occurred to me that Prof A was distorting and misinterpreting and misguiding students as was shown in the level of mixed messages I would never take a course taught by her LESSONS LEARNED TG I Survived
I do not recommend and dont suggest Taking this course will feel like taking two courses because the prof is incredibly difficult to communicate with in the sense she didnt want to specify parts of her instructions As a dire result, I failed one assignment, at which point everything was specified when it could have been beforehand such a disappoint
I appreciate and respect the fact prof a was kind and funny at times But dont appreciate her mocking students Its apparent in the non verbal behavior and some students can really analyze that during office hours virtually like myself Its true that most of us are adults but that shouldnt suffice as sufficient reason for behaving toward pupils badly
Dr. Aaragon is an amazing professor. Not only does she give great, aspirational lectures, but she is also incredibly kind and helpful. She genuinely cares about her student, and is always willing to offer her support.
I cant take another course with dr aragon and wouldn't advise anyone to do so Every single time I had asked her a question she wouldnt answer it and every single time I made some remark about something she would smirk all of this is so inappropriate Im currently in 7 courses and none of the profs are as harsh and rude as professor aragon
I am beyond glad that this professor wont be teaching any of my courses moving forward Shes highly incompetent and incapable in my view of teaching altogether
This prof has zero respect for her students and lack of instruction for all her assignments This course was def not ready to be taught HORRIBLE
Post will focus on the course and instructor The is an exploratory overview of Gender and IR These are interesting subcategories of political science and students must be exposed to Gender and IR The instructor simply does not have the brainpower to teach this course Compounding this is, as several posts made clear, is her attitude and rudeness
horrible grading criteria. Period
All these other negative reviews seem like they were mad at Prof A. as a person. She is a wonderful resource of so much good information, is upfront about grading criteria and devotes time to explaining assignments. This was my favourite class this semester. Her radical empathy made this pandemic easier for me.
Ok so at the beginning of the term I was so skeptical about taking this course due to the pretty grim reputation of the prof on here but did it anyway But its totally worth letting others know the course seems geared toward graduate level and not to mention the professor was super unprofessional on so many fronts
The kindest professor I have ever had. My advice for future students: USE HER. Reach out to her when you have question, or if you are confused and she will not judge, and set you on the right track.
I would never take another course with Prof A for the following reasons First the instructions will tell you to do one thing but then she will tell you to do another in class Second I found that communicating with Prof A in office hours can be difficult because she doesnt make eye contact with you and seems to have littly empathy Get soft skills
Prof A without any doubts shows much empathy for her students no questions about that She however does not properly answer questions that seek clarification in relation to assignments and projects Sadly a lot of the ratings specifically the poor ratings are true but no need to be so harsh during a pandemic tbh Nonetheless course needs improvement!
Professor Aragon is nothing short of amazing! Her lectures are inspirational and she was an absolute gem of a professor. I recommend her to all of my fellow peers. Seriously never a dull moment with her :)
Professor Aragon? More like Professor Arrogant. Professor spends the whole lecture, lecturing us on her personal problems and goes on and on about how she's great at teaching. For her assignments, there are no online criteria, she just writes on the board some subjects off the top of her head and makeup criteria on the spot. Terrible prof, avoid.
Professor Aragon may be the most frustrating prof I have ever had, bar none. She will provide additional information on an assignment after it was due for half of the class, but not yet due for the other half. She will change grading criteria at seemingly random times. She also constantly complains about drama in her personal life. Avoid and run.
Horrible, rude, unfair, lazy, inaccurate, disrespectful etc When I made an appointment to see her for extra help she would not even answer my questions and sideline them and then worse she would change subjects and topics
In my opinion Prof A lacks significant teaching skills She would probably do well in teaching drawing and pictorial art to middle school children Taking this course literally felt like taking 2 courses with a heavy workload Also in addition to this get ready to deal with a very difficult person
Prof A should not teach this course for the following reasons First Prof A changes expectations daily Second Prof A did not accommodate me even though I have documentation with the CAL Third Prof A will meet with you during office hours and sideline your questions as opposed to answering them These are facts and I have evidence
I am not surprised that Prof A is being slammed by students due to incompetence inappropriate behavior lack of teaching skills and unexpected changes in rubrics I am an honors student with Straight As and I can tell you right now that this course is not an easy A and that Prof A will make you hate school or your program respectively
Janni tried to be thoughtful with her students but came across as distracted by personal matters far too much. I think she means well; however, her unclear assignment criteria, bias toward specific students, and laziness (maybe being pandemic friendly) made it a difficult class to enjoy. If you do not have her beliefs you will struggle.
One of the best classes Ive ever taken. Prof A is understanding and very respectful. Shes very open and straightforward when talking about difficult subjects matters and I wholeheartedly respect her for that - as many professors tend to be vague on these topics. I hope to take another class of hers in the future.
Amazing course but Unintelligent Prof A We as undergraduate students do not attend your dynamic class to learn about how your daughter is a tech master We do not care because we are paying to be here to learn You did not answer my questions but digressed
dont do it guys this class is an easy A material is super interesting and captures real-world issues But strangely the teacher rips so many throughout her lectures that you can hear it clearly in the mic and doesmt even say excuse me or anything
whats with this prof dropping em constantly while delivering a lecture via zoom? Seems a little if not explictly inappropriate ? Aside from this very peculiar habit, the prof also sucks at clarifying concepts and addressign students concerns I simply asked a question about Dutch colonialism and its relationship to gender norms today
Beware to hear this prof brag about her daugther during EVERY CLASS Before you know it the class and term is finished because she uses all the time to talk about her daugther and catholic beliefs Waste of money
just not a good teacher Im glad this term is over With covid and the unpredictability of things this professor A seriously worsened everything Managed to pull off an A- but i can tell you it drained every once of energy
Do not take this course with Prof because she will mock you non verbally during office hours She does have unusual habits, such as smirking when questions are asked of her, sidelining important questions, and, above all, responds to emails in a condescending tone and paternalistic attitude Her language use in emails is insulting in nature Karma!
Shes insufferable. Horrible personality, constantly brags about all the supposed teaching awards shes received, but she is by far the worst prof I have had in my university career. Assignments are seemingly made up as we go. Subject material is mostly nonsensical. She can take things personally. Regardless, easy A if youre willing to suck up.
There are no tags that capture the essence of Janni Be prepared for a negative experience masked with benevolence Received an email about my accidental plagiarism yet this was proved incorrect as counter-evidence was robust I also offered plausible reasoning and examples Accusations were perhaps the most negative aspect of the course
She is a very smart, left leaning teacher who puts a personal/emotional lens on some course material. In a gender class I found this normal, but I did find her very harsh, blunt and opinionated. It was easy for me to figure out what she wanted to hear, and then it was easy to get a good grade. She cares about her students and is flexible but messy
Prof A is an easy grader, but talks about her daughter and her personal life frequently in her lectures. If you participate, you'll get a decent grade. She can be very opinionated in her lectures (maybe a little too much), and her response emails can be condescending to students.
Honestly one of the kindest profs I've ever had. If you make the effort to talk to her, she makes the effort to talk to you. Found her class to be very accommodating and I really enjoyed her as a person. As for content, a lot of the learning is reading based, and the concepts were incredibly easy to understand
I purposely delayed my rating until after the term That said, unfortunately, I am unable to provide a positive reference for Prof A for many reasons She seems kind, and although such a characteristic is necessary, it is not sufficient, because the WAYS IN WHICH the knowledge dissemination is facilitated needs tremendous, significant improvement
Please be prepared to deal with who may be the most difficult person with whom you may be required to conduct dealings I thought my friend was joking, but apparently, he wasn't By dropping this course, I feel like I have had a rock lifted off of me
Janni Aragon is perhaps the most arrogant, simple minded professor on campus. Her left wing loon ideas are a joke. She has inadvertently turned so many people into conservatives that she should be getting a paycheck from them. She thinks abortion is no different than removing a wart. Avoid her at all costs. She will not teach you anything.
I decided to visit this website because I wanted to view the reviews about Prof A I want to make clear that I am a hard worker and punctual individual, who studies for several hours every day I am now graduated and grateful to the Almighty for saving me from this Thing I dropped 323 on time in 2020 due to apparent harassment in emails by her
