Worst teacher
Oh god... I cant even describe the pain of this class.
is nice but does not speak english that well (ex calls eng 111 "english triple one") not very clear about homework but not the worst teacher ever
I think she is a Great prof! She grades you on the quality of your ideas and how well you can express them. I love that, but if you are an English major and all you care about is learing the perfect way of doing everything then she is not the prof for you. I personally really enjoy her.
Worst teacher I ever had in my entire life! Yeah, that bad.
Perhaps it's not intuitive that if one intends to teach English, one ought to be able to speak English... I will go out on a "Lim"b: avoid January (the whole year).

This is the worst professor in the entire school. She is a disgrace to the University. She feels questions are challenges to her authority, and makes no attempt to provide meaningful help. She holds grudges against students and even rolls her eyes when you ask her questions. Not professional, is rude
The most memorable prof ever in my life! I can never forget the pain in her class, ouch! Still aching!
Oh my! I feel I have been mentally violated by January. She rambles on for hours about anything but the subject material. I feel I have been swindled out of my tuition money! Don't bother studying for her finals, you can never prepare for what she dreams up for the exam. Quite possibly the worst I have ever seen. Very embarrassing on the U of A
THE WORST TEACHER IN THE WHOLE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT!!! SHE CANT SPEAK ENGLISH PROPERLY AND SHE TRAILS OF IN HER LECTURES ABOUT CRAP THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING WHICH MAKES UR LIFE HELL TRYING TO KEEP UP. GIVES THE WORST ESSAY TOPICS, AND DONT EVEN BOTHER TRYING TO GET A REASONABLE MARK IN HER EXAMS.DONT I REPEATE DONT TAKE ENG111 WITH HER.
Lim is a little bit dim when it comes to her duties as a professor at the University of Alberta. I mean no disrespect to the institution in saying this; however, I believe that having her teach is either a study being conducted on behalf of the U of A psychology department gone wrong, or a joke to be released in a U of A campus wide bloopers tape.
Horrible experience. She didnt speak clearly, and went off topic constantly. When youd ask a question she'd answer something totally different. She seemed to have no clue what she was doing.
HORRIBLE!

She is a nice and friendly prof to me. She is also humorous in some ways. I followed what she said, 'Just put efforts in assignments and course work, and you can get a good grade'. She is not as rude as what others commented. Make sure you put your effort in her class, she will appreciate that.
Not too bad. Come to most classes and participate. I personally thought she was a easy marker, but thats just me. Yes, she goes off topic a lot. And yes, sometime you will sit there and go WTF?! You'll live. she won't test you on it. But she tends to give quizzes on recent readings .. on really obscure things .. and quote identification was hell.
NO!!! she will not show you how to be a good writer, she knows that! She expects you to BE A ADULT and find your own writing style for yourself. To get a good grade in her class is simple: Show up for classes, READ THE MATERIAL, read books on essay writing if you need help with that and study the reading material (Make reading notes... Seriously!)
January Lim was a very good prof. She gets bashed for not having very clear english but can you blame her?, she speaks 5 languages. Be sure to keep up on the readings and follow the syllabus schedule. If you put forth the effort and have a positive and respectful attitude in class you will walk away with a great mark. I hated english until J. Lim.
She is a king prof and has passion for what she is doing. As long as you get on her good side and show up for class she will assign you good grades. However those who do not read the text or show up often do not do well. She is a very nice person and understands if you cant show up as long as you send her an e-mail. I would love to have her as my p
love her love her lover her. I HATED english until I came into Dr.lims class. get on her good side, be nice, go to class, and put effort into your work and she guarntees you a good grade. Wonderful prof, you can not get a bad grade if you do the stuff i mentioned above impossible! ALL semester was presentation i didnt even read novels and got an A
Avoid Professor Lim because her class is just an expensive book club and a waste of your money. She does not teach. The students teach, and oftentimes the info you learn is erroneous. She has at least three student presentations per class in order to compensate for her inability to teach. She picks favorites. You will not learn anything.
This class is an absolute breeze. Lim is great. She's so much fun and class goes by quickly. An easy class, take it.
One of the best profs I've had so far. This class is very unstructured and discussion based and there was also a lot of presentation based assignments so maybe don't take it if you are shy or need structure. I personally loved the way the class was set up and found that it was one of my favorite English classes so far. She's SO cute and funny too.
Easy easy easy. Didn't learn anything though. Just show up and pay attention to the other student's presentations, because that's all this course is. Join in the discussions, she likes that.
great professor! she is very nice and helpful.
Attendance is mandatory as there will be lots of class discussions. Don't buy the short stories texts (concert of voices)... it's just waste of your money. just scan it. It's not necessary to read the novel to pass the course, but I highly recommend to read it as the novel is extremely well selected. She's very helpful if you go to her office hours
Great Prof! Tells you when there will be quizzes, and if you read the short story a few minutes before class you will ace them. Not a huge workload, just space out the few major assignments and it is a breeze. She is very helpful, you can talk to her after class. Easy grader, never got below a B+. Class is tedious but she gets to know you.
Her class was awesome. I loved this prof. I strongly recommend taking her class. Her teaching style is much more idea, creativity, participation, and group focused, so if you aren't great at writing but still enjoy reading and discussing then it should be great for you. Avoid if you are shy.
If your goal is to boost your GPA and you do not care to learn anything, this prof is for you! Most classes are nearly completely filled with student presentations. One can only speculate as to the reasons for this (laziness, on her part?). It feels more like I've joined a $600.00 book/story club, rather than receiving a university level education!
not great at all... i could barely sit through her classes. She couldnt answer questions becuase i dont believe that she could comprehend english... "What's an adverbial conjunction?" Answer, after a long pause "Yep."
What a GPA booster! I think she lectured three times. It was all individual presentations and group projects. Awesome. They were annyoing to do but once you did one of each it was an easy ride. I wouldn't want her in a first year course where you really need to learn things but as an extra class it was great!
Complete joke of a class. Prof didn't seem to understand the english language so clarifying assignments, etc.. was impossible. Lectures were filled solely with presentations and attending was a complete waste of time. Worse than my most terrible highschool class. I Didn't learn a thing. Do not recommend.
Never lectures, doesn't clarify expectations and will send you off to buy books on how to write if you ever ask her questions. Peer presentations started to get boring by the eighth straight week of them. Avoid her. The good grade you MIGHT get isn't worth the hours and hours of your life which will never be replaced.
I would recommend not to take this class. Her classes were boring and you will never learn anything at all
I hated English until I took 125 with Dr. Lim. If you can look smart and interested on day 1, you will automatically be on her 'favorites' list. (In other words, an easy A). Be ready to attend class (participation marks = an easy 10%). Pretty easy grader too, I'd recommend her if you like a somewhat fun class and don't mind group projects.
Prof. Lim's class was not really a class at all. She would talk about random things for half the class, and the other half would be people reading their assignments out loud. Lots of group discussions and presentations. Should be an easy mark though.
Best Teacher Ever!!! So funny and an absolute D Light to be around, could also be a comedian.
Great prof. If you are hard working, confident, polite, and make a good impression you are on track for an A. Honestly, she will try to scare you off in the first few weeks, but the class ends up being really fun. Dr. Lim is a real comedian, she makes funny comments, her class is really entertaining. Main thing is.. be confident/noticed in class.
Lim is such a delight. If you are actually interested in English, maybe not the class for you - class was basically all student projects and let out early every time. Essays are short and done in class (500 words, for night classes) and marks fairly easy if you at least answer the question. I did terrible in high school engl and got an A- :)
Professor Lim is a very nice and funny lady, although I wouldn't recommend taking her class if you are passionate about the course and want to learn more. But her class is definitely a GPA booster, as long as you get her to like you by participating in class discussions. Oh and she assigns a reading every class so make sure you read them!
she is a kind lady. you will love her and her class. read before class and discuss in class and you will get at least B.
I loved her as a prof, If you engage yourself in her class she will like you and respond positively to you. She was a pleasure to have as a prof, I wish she taught all the other english classes I have to take.
She's a pretty chill prof, work load wasn't much though there is one big group project. Her classes are pretty entertaining but can get boring sometimes. If you want to be in her good side, participate in discussion. Oh and if you're actually serious about English.. probably not the class for you. Overall my personal experience in class was great!
Really enjoyed her class. She's funny, the classes are easy, the work load is light and she knows her stuff.
You will not learn a single thing from her. If you actually are interested in English it may not be for you. She has readings but they were all short stories, no novels. Attendance is not really mandatory. EASIEST MARKER EVER. All the essays were in class and there was one quick group assignment. Very little work required and you can still do well
Do not take her class if you value your GPA. It is a hit or miss with her. If she agrees with your point of view in your essay, you get an A, if she doesn't agree, you get a C. I am an A+ student, and I got A+ on all my essays in ENG 124, but she never gave me higher than a B... If that doesn't say something, I don't know what does
Essays are all in-class and readings were short articlespoems. Took a lot of effort writing feedback for exams, which is very helpful for the final. Very nice and approachable. Discussion is very clear and it is very easy to use the notes taken in order to write midterm and final essay. Marking is less strict since essays are timed.
Show up and pass. Participate in class and you'll do well.
Understanding and reasonable but she doesn't speak the best english.... also she apparently dislikes "yawners"
Really good prof. I personally never liked taking English classes but this is by far my favourite. She assigns quizzes but makes you prepared for the final and midterm which I find very helpful. Most of the texts are on eclass which saves you money. If you do the work and pay attention in class, you'll pass.
Didn't learn anything / Expectations are not clear/ Grading is easy/ very short and easy readings/ 25% midterm/ 30% final/ group projects/ participation worth 10%/ Topics she likes to read include: assimilation, minorities/ the text she chooses; there are barely any resources online to help you/ don't care about learning? Take her class.
Tons of work. A midterm essay, a homework essay , a presentation(20 min with a partener), a final essay, and lots of small pieces of reading and projects. (Each essay only worths 25% of the term grade, which is 70% of total course grade) The novel is very unpopular. And her grading is the usual at best, definitely not an easy grader.
She is a very nice human being compared to that monster ahsan chowdhury so just show up and pass; do a tiny bit of work, and get an A+.
I'm only a month in, but she seems great. Pretty easy class, fun and laid back plus the content is interesting. :)
If you really want to learn something, this class is not for you. But if are just taking this class to complete the requirements then go for her. In order to get a higher grade in this class, you need to be in the list of her favorites on day one. You would have to agree with her views in the essay, else get ready for a C.
She is just a really nice person who cares about her students. Her class is not the most useful class as far as learning but she is super nice and a pretty easy marker. If you embrace her projects and try hard you will get an a. She has few assignments that are relatively easy and she understands that English is not the only class you are taking.
underrated prof. first time I've seen a prof that has a low rating on rate my prof that was somewhat good. I had three hour classes with her and I just showed up did homework and then got a A. You have to be somewhat decent at writing.
She's very shy and doesn't really know how to lead a class, most of our online lectures were being lead by myself or other students, and so long as you participate in her class which is very easy you'll do just fine
Whilst this course was 3h in-person lecture, after the class forums and discussions finished, the class was allowed to transition online for everyone's convenience. Lim had difficulty being confident and the discussions and forums were relatively quiet, but knowing this, she allowed the class to leave early if the necessary tasks finished early.
Lim was a super easy prof. If you think her class is hard, reconsider being in university, this is the easiest it'll get. As long as you participate once in a while you'll be fine for participation marks. For someone who got bad grades in English in high school, Lim marks extremely easy. Never get lower than an A- and her criticism is fair.
doesn't lead conversations, bland classes, final is writing 2 comparative essays back to back, she can change your mark to whatever she wants (final mark doesn't reflect the marks in class), useless feedback, extreme favouritism, take any other prof and drop the class if you are already in it
If you want to do well in Doctor Lim's course, then you have to be willing to participate in the discussions every class. As long as you're okay with that, then you should do fine. There are multiple papers and a couple group projects, as well as class presentations, but Doctor Lim is a fair marker, and she prepares you well for the assignments.
professor seems to be confused herself, she is not able to communicate well
Dr. Lim is the easiest prof you'll ever have if you know how to write university papers. She doesn't have time for people who are clueless so if this is your first uni class and you're not strong in English pick another prof. Otherwise her feedback is fine and if you say somewhat intelligent things she'll love you. Bland lectures, overall okay.
January Lim does not have any self-confidence, barely talks, is super introverted, and should quit her job soon.
If you have to take English to fulfil your requirements, please avoid taking a class with this woman at all costs. Take it another time if all other sections are full. January Lim should be boycotted! She lacks clarity in speech, and leadership and communication qualities. She has been teaching for several years now but hasn't progressed at all!!!
It's not my fault, it's everyone's opinion, I'm pretty cool, and you're just a minion.
It's really fun watching you try to understand everything that's being said about you. Everyone brings happiness to a room. I bring happiness when I walk in, and you bring happiness when you leave. Light travels faster than sound. It explains why you seemed smart until I heard you speak. Most mistakes can be corrected. You are the only exception.
January, I don't understand why you lack self-confidence. You've been at your job for years now. You can't even stand in front of a group of teenagers and you criticize our presentations for not having enough interaction with the audience. I would recommend for you to enroll yourself in a beginner English class. You need it more than any of us!!!
Is she like a fraud like Mike Ross from Suits in Netflix who is smart as hell and can do anything?
I don't know who made January an English professor. She needs to learn English herself first. She has a terrible accent, and can not utter a complete sentence properly. She lacks confidence and leadership skills. Introverted, quiet, mute, boring and dull lectures, no instruction. Honestly, this woman has been teaching for years but is incapable!
Has favourites, is extremely biased. No knowledge. Lacks the confidence and leadership skills a competent professor should have. Barely speaks, introverted and when she does her English is not fluent and is confusing. She has no idea what's going on, and gives no explanations for assignments. January is mannerless and antisocial towards students!!!
CALLING ALL ENGLISH 102 STUDENTS!!! DROP OUT OF THIS LADY'S CLASS. TAKE IT ANOTHER TIME SHE HAS FAVOURITES WHEN MARKING. REALLY INTROVERTED AND DOESN"T REALLY DO ANYTHING. HER OWN ENGLISH IS CONFUSING. NO SELF-CONFIDENCE. NO LEADERSHIP SKILLS. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO COMMUNICATE. YOUR MARK IS PREDETERMINED. JANUARY DOES NOT KNOW A THING ABOUT ENGLISH.
January has no teaching skills at all. I believe that she has problems with her vocal cords. She rarely speaks and when she does she's extremely quiet. Moreover, she does not make eye contact with everyone and usually looks at one spot. Her posture is hunched back. A competent professor should have self-confidence and social skills, unlike her.
contrary to the dominant opinion, i loved this lovely womans class, i am a English minor and she is very encouraging and kind and open. ive had bad English profs and she was the best.
This lady does not know what she's doing. Clueless most of the time and marks unreasonably. Mute woman. Boring lectures, doesn't encourage communication with students and gives no instruction. Reads off slides monotonously for the majority of classes. Boring and lame. She gets pissed off if you try to justify a higher mark for a presentation.
the worst professor, neigh, educator i ever had.
Lovely woman, speaks quietly so you'll have to sit near the front. Marks somewhat based on how much she likes you so just be friendly and attentive and your grade will be fine. Feedback is often lacking but aside from that her course was enjoyable and calm.
Sometimes I wonder why she's even teaching.
She speaks very less. This surprises me given that she's been a professor at this University for many years by now. In terms of grading, she takes a long time. Expectations are unclear. Doesn't really lead the lectures. When me and my group asked her politely why we got the mark we did despite giving an interactive presentation, she was agitated.
She's too shy.
She's too quiet and timid to be a teacher. Her expectations are unclear. Grading is too harsh. Marks too hard for group presentations although she herself does not know how to present herself to a crowd of people. Her accent is hard to comprehend and she stutters. She tries to act sweet and caring but comes across as ineffective and unhelpful.
JUST A BIG NO! I TOOK HER ONLY TO MEET MY ENGLISH REQUIREMENT. IF YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTION BY ALL MEANS GO FOR IT BUT DO NOT EXPECT TO LEARN ANYTHING USEFUL FROM THIS COURSE. GOOD LUCK.
Avoid at all costs Too quiet Does not take ownership Lacks leadership skills Marking is fixed Expectations are confusing Spends entire lecture reading from a slideshow about history Gives too many readings Minimal feedback on assignments Gets upset if you ask for a re-mark on group presentations. Me and my friend asked for a remark and she shouted.
The professor doesn't teach. There is no "teaching" that is happening, she just stands there and talks to you in the quietest voice. All the knowledge comes from your peers. Have to stand up and talk every class and repeat everyone else's words x6. Went into the first essay without having taught us even a hint of essay writing. Avoid this teacher.
Despite what everyone says, I enjoyed January's class. The topic was Food and culture, which was interesting to learn about. She is soft-spoken and doesn't teach much, but her class is easy to pass. She's an easy marker, and there's lots of small assignments for completion to boost your mark. My group had an average presentation and still got an A.
Lectures were easy to understand but not very engaging. Participation matters, and she learns everyone's names, so she knows if you attend or not. Grading was fair. There are ways, only an in-class essay, a take-home essay, group projects and a final, to grade on other than participation, so each assignment is worth a fair bit.
As an English teacher trying to teach an engineering class, she read off her slides a lot, and didn't really teach. She was very sweet and tried to get to know the students, but was very avoidant of conflict. The writing assignments she gives are so easy, they just take time. Speaking up in class is part of the grade, and she marks attendance
Not much actual teaching but that was what I anticipated from the start. As long as you participate and finish small group assignments she gives, you will get a good grade. She gave a couple of tests through out the semester but they were really easy
ever best staff for ENG 103 courses.
Very kind and caring professor that wants to learn your name but DO NOT take her if you have to. Very vague, her tests are hard to study for because YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT IT WILL BE ON. Hard marker. Group work heavy. Hard to focus and you learn nothing.
Get ready for 3 small quizzes that worth 15% of your grade EACH. Avoid at all costs. Whenever she teaches she always look at the script, but when you do when presenting she takes off marks for it even when you looked at it once.
