I still can't figure this one out. She's really, REALLY spacy and failed my friend even when he was in the same group as me and did most of the work. Kind of borders on being a weirdo, but she's the head of the Women's Studies Dept. Go figure!
very mean and weird!
excellent professor, VERY helpful, get to know here, you is an awesome person!
Dr. Bobo gives very clear, concise directions. She is fabulous to talk with about representation and power. The class is structured so students to learn through their experience; you get out of it exactly what you put in.

prof. bobo is talented and interesting. very helpful and cares about students. good choices of films in classes
This class should be a film class! it requires a 2hrs movie night a week. attendance is mandatory at lecture, discussion, and the movie. Its a pretty easy class and fulfils a bunch of GEs, but it was not what i expected...pretty boring and hard to sit through lecture.
bleh! class is so hard to sit through! her lectures aren't very clear, i don't know what exactly to take notes on, and the class seems to be directed more for her three TA's. the class is ok, but it depends on the TA that you get. unfortunately for me, i got the hardest one. i would not recommend this class at all.
She babbles - her lectures lack coherent thought, clarity, and any edicational value whatsoever. She nspent most of the lectures asking if we have seen different movies and going on about different people in the film industry. I leared more about film than about women in this class, but that considered, I learned very little about either.
This class is a mess. There is absolutely no need to go to lectures, just do the reading and go to the movies but she takes attendance for EVERYTHING so you are forced to attend. She is the worst lecturere I've ever had and just babbles about nonsense that will make no difference in the long run. However the class wasn't hard at all.
Ok. Most boring class ever. Learned nothing from this class at all, even about film, which most of the class was about. I did learn from my OWN research on it, though, for the final 6-8 pg paper though. The TAs are wonderful and section is always fun (weird, i know) but you literally can go to 0 lectures and get an A.
Worst professor ever! He lectures have no relevance to the midterm and final. I felt like I was taking a film studies class. She acts like her opinion is the "right" opinion and pretty much only talks to her TAs during lecture. She is very unapproachable. Don't take this class!
Awful, biased class. So left, it's just as bad as her right adversaries. Sexism desguised as feminism.
awful
she rambles
The purpose of this class is to investigate the ways in which women of minority groups are portrayed in lit and film and how feminist writers reconstruct these portrayals. It's a great premise and the material is interesting, but Bobo is the worst professor I've had at UCSB. Unclear lectures, rambling, biased. Easy midterm/final, though.
Man Hating 101!!!

bobo's film and activism class is amazing. she is supportive of student's involvement in the community and of creative projects. she is shy, but sweet, and really charming to get to know. her readings are a bit dated, but history is always important.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. !! all i have to say.
The class isn't too hard as long as you attend all of the lectures, discussions, and screenings. The TA's take attendence at everything so make sure you're there. It's also important to do all of the readings. The class isn't too bad and it's kind of funny when the professor goes off on tangents.
The material in the class is very interesting, but the lectures are pointless and have nothing to do with the material. You have to attend lecture and discussion because the take attndance. The midterm is very easy. You have to write a 10 page paper and the final is a take home, so you have to write two essays. Beware u might fall asleep in lecture
i hated this class. i held no interest whatsoever in the topic and it was tons of work. i did get a b though, without reading any of the books in their entirety and just by attending lecture and hardly taking notes.
I really think she gets a bad rap. Her lectures are somewhat relevant but she tends to digress. The good thing about her is she's pretty lazy and slacks off on teaching/grading so its not hard to do well. Go to office hours, make sure she knows your name, don't annoy her in lecture, do decent work and you'll pull an A, no problem
fun... different teaching style
This class was horrible. I'm so serious, she was boring half the time then when she put notes up on slides which didn't happen all that often she went way too fast for you to get any notes. The sections were no better. in both the lectures and the discussions we got off topic way too much. This class was not what I expected and I didnt learn much.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Both the professor and my T.A. - Masen Uliss subjectively skewed my grade in order to NP me at the end of the quarter. I believe my T.A. disliked me, and purposely failed me. TRUE STORY - I visited her and challenged my grade, eventually saying I would bring the administration into our dispute. I ended up getting a PASS...
I really liked this professor. She's smart and approachable, so I got a lot from the class. She does tend to go off topic a lot, but the tests are easy as long as you do your reading and write down the things that she literally says twice in class.
a lot of reading and writing. and she doesn't really help students.
The books and films you watch in class for the most part are very interesting, the lecture on the other hand makes me want to hurt myself it's so painful. Slow, boring, I play solitare the entire time. Section is not helpful either- a waste of my 9am monday mornings
the professor's lectures are often incoherentand unorganized; she goes off topic regularly and doesn't bother to try to connect the concepts she goes over. the films & books she uses to teach the class are poor mediums. she uses films that are barely related to the subject and books that are poorly written with ridiculous storylines & characters
the novel and films were somewhat interesting, but the prof never bothered to go over the concepts and relate them to the novels/films...she goes off topic talking about tattoos and snakes...not very helpful...overall, the class sucked
Bobo rambled on about things that were totally irrelevant to the subject. She was always very grumpy. However, the class wasn't that hard if you remembered the few terms she actually used (she repeated them MULTIPLE times)
The mid-term and final were both 50 questions multi choice. pretty hard, I heard the average on the mid-term was a C- and 5 or 6 books we had to read for the class.
She will give you a 'B' as long as you don't ditch the class (not even once), do hw, and finish your paper, but the midterm is ridiculous, she would ask some questions that you would never hear about in the class. More than half of class got less than 60%, but she did not curve it.
One of the least useful classes I've ever taken. Her lectures were always disorganized. She got preachy and then often times went off topic. The class always seemed like more work than it was worth.
shes a really nice lady.the class i took was really interesting & i enjoyed going.the only bad thing was that she kinda rambles off topic a bit.and she will NEVER answer your emails.but shes really nice!haha.the midterm WAS hard though.papers are good because she lets you write on whatever you want.all in all id take her again :-)
Way more work that its worth. Class was Tuesday and Thursday 2-3:15, Tuesday from 5-7 for a movie, and a section on Monday at 10a. Lectures were fairly rambling and non-specific but the midterm and final were really hard. Plus there's a research paper.
This class is definitely not as bad at people make it out to be. Although there is quite a bit of reading for th class nd a resreach paper, the midterm and final are incredibly easy if you pay attention in lecture and do the reading. Attendance is mandatory for lecture, section, and film screening but material is interesting and conceptually simple
Bobo herself is a nice teacher, tries to get ideas out clearly, though she rambles on quite a bit. However i DESPISED my ta Barbara Taylor. She was very opinionated and changed grades based on personal preference. Overall I am unhappy with the class both for the useless content as well as the larger-than-life ego of the teaching assistant
Three years out of UCSB and this was my worst professor. Has an uninviting demeanor, and when I went to her office hours to ask WHY I received the grade I did, and HOW to improve on my future work, she became offensive and suggested I talk to the dean. Not a teacher worth learning from, except a life lesson on not what to be.
This class ruined Feminist Studies for me. Bobo takes attendance every day--in a 300+ person class. The Monday sections are mandatory, and you watch movies for 2 hours which may seem fun, but is really just a time suck. Do not take this class unless you'll flunk out of college for lack of units.
Tedious lectures with really random tangents and unorganized structure. Could do a lot more with the class material. multiple choice midterm and final with a 10 page cultural analysis/research paper (free topic). class material was interesting, just not the best professor. A bit vague as to what we are tested on, got mad at TA for making study guid
i am currently taking her and the class is coo.. we watch movies and discuss them.BUT OMG that woman talks and talks.. she is very long winded.and she goes off topic a lot! but the midterm id multiple choice, and u hav a research paper and reg take home final.. pretty chill.. if u can stand her voice for 2 hrs
Honestly, I dont really understand the negative comments AT ALL. if you do the work, you will get a good grade. pople are just upset because the class CHALLENGES YOU. its college. thats what is supposed to happen. she is an amazingly knowledgeable professor. super helpful. I have taken 3 classes with her and would take any more offered
This has definitely been my least favorite class this quarter. Lectures are very scattered and at times you have no idea why what she is talking about it even relevant to Feminist Studies. There is a TON of reading.. none of it very hard and the TAs take attendance everyday. On the upside the tests are super easy if you've done the readings
Goes off on a tangent A LOT! Lecture is scattered and sometimes you don't know what to take note of. Tests are easy if you keep up on the assigned readings. Also there's a 10 page critical analysis due at the end of the quarter, which sucks.
Extremely boring which almost brought me to tears..her lectures are so off topic so class always seemed useless except when we are watching a video. But tests are easy if you keep up with the readings but the 10pg long essay really really suck.
she talks in such monotone i fell asleep during every lecture. her lectures are hard to follow and pointless except the videos that were addressed in the midterm and final. the midterm was easy but the final was ridiculously hard. it was all about small insignificant details from the articles in the reader. material is easy, the grade is not.
She is such a kind lady, but does go off on tangents often. Fortunately, these tangents are always interesting. Definitely do all the readings, and attend lecture and section. She tests on small details from clips shown during lecture. Midterm was way easier than the final. Found the class incredibly interesting!
Don't take this class unless you plan to work hard for your grade, this class is hard. Attending lecture & films & reading every book is required. Lecture is quite boring; goes off on tangents a lot. Take notes on what she says. T.A.'s are not helpful at all & do not grade fairly. Tests are multiple choice & questions mostly based on the reader.
She is really nice, but its true when it comes to her going off in tangents. She hardly ever calls on people when they have their hands up, so if you have to say make sure and speak up, raising your hand won't do it! Don't have a "too cool" attitude with TA Foss. She while take out her inner anger towards those that she sees as being cool! no joke!
Good professor. Enjoyed her lectures. May speak too softly sometimes. She's funny too, even though she might not look like she's kidding. I learned a lot in this class. But if you aren't interested in this subject, don't take it. A LOT of reading but midterm and final were easy. The final essay was also refreshing. But that's if you like rambling.
People who complain that this class is too hard are not used to doing regular schoolwork. As long as one does the reading and attends lecture, this class is actually enjoyable. Not hard. The novels are good and lectures interesting, I enjoyed her going on tangents too, shows she's passionate about what she teaches.
I took the Honor's with her, but not very impressed. She is nice and humorous, but not very good at lecturing. As long as you do the reading, attend the lectures and movies, you will be fine since the tests are fair. You have a paper, a midterm and a final, both of which are multiple choice questions.
I really didn't enjoy this class and Prof. Bobo goes off topic almost every time the class meets and the books were boring. Some of the films were okay but the sections were alright. Bobo talks so slow and she kinda mumbles and it makes everything so much more difficult. The exams were hella difficult.
If you are taking this class for the purpose of learning about feminism, then you probably won't learn anything. This class focused on representations of media which just happened to involve women. Professor Bobo goes off on tangents, and they may seem irrelevant, but there's a fair chance that small minute comments will be on the midterm and final
We read at least 4-6 novels, almost all of which were either boring or poorly written. The Monday screenings were a hit or miss. The final/midterm were 50 questions completely based on random facts from lecture or the reader/novels. Not an easy A but doable, professor Bobo seems like a really nice person and was funny in lecture.
Bobo is an excellent and very easy professor! I'm not a Fem studies major but took this course and found it interesting and easy. No midterm/final. One project that she guarantees you can't do bad on, and weekly 1 pg summaries of the readings. Readings are easy and are provided except for one book that I bought online for a penny. Take her!
Lectures are "infamously" confusing. Professor Bobo will go off on tangents that are unrelated; sometimes she forgets why she started talking about it! Otherwise, easy class to take so long as you pace the readings.
Her lectures go a little off tangent sometimes but overall I really enjoyed the content we studied and while the class wasn't too difficult I still felt like I learned quite a bit from the material we looked at.
I took a course with Professor Bobo my first quarter of freshman year. It was my first Feminist Studies course and it forever changed and shifted my lens of the world. I am deeply appreciative for all the texts, lectures, and films from this course. I appreciate Professor Bobo's teaching and for her creation of this course.
Easiest class I've taken at UCSB. Her lectures contain all of the answers to the midterm and final (both multiple choice) she is shy but sweet. lectures are very interesting. You should take this class because it's easy if you show up and follow the syllabus.
I took notes and studied off of it but didn't do so well on the midterm and final. Go to your TA for help because professor barely provides any help. You don't really need to read the books for you can use sparknotes and enotes but might not do so well without knowing the details.
Lectures are dry and she gets off topic most of the time so it was hard for me to stay awake and actually listen. This class is really easy as long as you do the readings, watch the films, and study lecture notes for exams. Exams are multiple choice and there is only one paper, which wasn't that hard to write. It's helpful to have a good TA.
She has great ideas but tends to be a really boring lecturer. Easy grader, no tests or exams. She prefers to assign writing and creative projects.
Professor Bobo is great. She's not trying to trick you on exams and she's very passionate about the course. The material is relevant and applicable to other courses. A great class to take, even for your first quarter.
While her lectures can get boring, Bobo is very passionate!! Midterm and final are both multiple choice and study guide is extremely straight forward. As long as you keep up with the readings you should have no problems on the exams.
use a laptop to copy down lecture notes since she may get pretty fast sometimes. But as long as you wrote down everything the midterm and final, which are MC questions, will be a breeze. The only thing to stress about is probably the paper. Dont really need to buy the novels since she doesnt really test on them. Overall a really easy class!
The final and midterm are MC and pretty easy if you paid attention in lecture, read the 4 books, and films. Lecture is a must bc some film clips are not available to watch anywhere else and she tests on them. Material is interesting and covers the women issues with multiple races. Her lectures can get boring because she rants getting off topic.
She's a good professor, the class is not hard if you do what you have to do.
Bobo is a little boring at times and goes off topic a bit, but her lectures and the assigned readings really help you gain an understanding of the material. Tests are pretty easy too and the TAs are amazing.
Don't buy the reader. The tests are solely based on the lecture. The final isn't cumulative and I did better on the final then the midterm, and I didn't even read after the midterm. She gets off topic and reads straight from her notes. You have to sign in every lecture which sucks because she's a pretty poor lecturer. Easy A.
Bobo goes off on a lot of irrelevant tangents which can make it hard to take accurate notes. Difficult to understand sometimes and follow along, babbles a lot. Multiple choice midterm and non accumulative multiple choice final. 1 paper, you get to pick the topic. Attendance taken at lectures and movie showings.
Clearly knows the subject of film and female participation in visual culture. My biggest complaint is that the Midterm had an average of a 73% this quarter and her TAs weren't able to get the questions on the midterm. She didn't curve it or take off the questions that only 3 or 4 percent of the class got correct.
Very passionate and knowledgeable but the TA's know very little about tests to prepare students in section. The essay was graded very easily and the tests themselves were okay. Easy and entertaining class even though her material is quite outdated.
She shows a movie every class and there are weekly readings to prep you for them. Do the readings and you'll be fine. The 2 midterms are max 20 questions and multiple choice and she gives you a study guide that's practically the test the week before. No final just a project or paper. I'd totally recommend this class
She's a really nice person, but that doesn't translate into her teaching. The content was really interesting, but the tests didn't reflect what was covered in class and was more based on specific or odd details briefly covered in class. My TA was amazing and really helpful, but there was a lack of communication in what needed to be taught.
I really loved this class. The content was really interesting, and the midterm, essay, and final were not difficult whatsoever. I didnt read any of the material after thanksgiving break bc i got lazy, and still managed to do good. The study guides for the tests are essential if you want to pass or do good, and the essay was graded really easily.
Amazing professor! Even though you have to read a lot (4 books + course reader) and watch a few boring movies, it is an awesome class.
I really liked Professor Bobo because she was pretty laid back while still being knowledgable about what she was speaking about. I think the lectures could have some improvement, a lot of it seemed irrelevant, like publisher information, but actually discussing the books and movies was interesting.
My TA was amazing, but I literally never saw Professor Bobo. Like, she did not post any lectures or anything and we did not interact with her at all. The class was based on weekly written and flipgrid responses and a final 2000 word paper. The midterm and final were cancelled because of rona.
I'm kind of surprised by Professor Bobo's score on here, I personally love her. I've taken FEMST 40, 142, and 143 from her and enjoyed them all. Does she get distracted in lectures sometimes? Yes. Are her readings/documentaries 30 years old? Yes. But honestly, her classes are very easy to succeed in if you just do work, especially now online
Her online courses aren't the best. She doesn't do any pre-recorded or zoom lectures at all so it's pretty much just read the material and teach yourself. Three reading critiques (30% each) and one book response (10%), so it's a pretty straightforward course, she's just not very accessible and assignments are confusing. Not terrible, but not great.
Took this class online (COVID) and was disappointed when I never saw/heard from Prof Bobo. All assignments were graded by TAs and they were the only ones I ever came in contact with. Good reading material and videos, but I wish I could have learned from Prof Bobo herself.
Lectures consist of a lot of extra videos, makes it a pain when the class is an 8am. Bobo is still a super interesting prof, and its very interesting to read her work on the films we watch in class. She's very kind and engaging!
I really enjoy talking to her! The movies she assigned each week were all thought-provoking. Though the readings were kind of heavy, they were effective in helping us understand each feminist in the movies! I do get to know a lot!
Going to Bobo's lectures is not necessary to do well. My critique of this class (ironically) is the lack of representation of women of different cultures. 5/8 films were focused on black women, 1 on US soccer (white women), 1 Latino woman, 1 Native American (where the focus wasn't even on women), and not a single film about Asian American women.
The lectures with Bobo were a little difficult because she would mumble a lot and forget to move the slides in the presentation. The class itself was very fun because most of it was papers on the movies we watched. I would take her again.
The class was interesting and I enjoyed the films, but lectures felt pointless since there weren't any slides or notes that needed to be taken. Overall the class was very manageable and pretty easy, the papers are short and the grading criteria is light.
Easy course, one topic per week with a film and reading, and a short paper every couple of weeks. The course structure is easy to understand but Bobo's lectures are not the most engaging, especially at 8 am. Interesting topics and films discussed.
Readings and weekly film. Most films were dated and inaccessible outside of lecture, but attendance technically not mandatory. Grade determined by 5 papers, each 20% of grade. 8 a.m. was a drag but content interesting and easy. Emphasize dissecting film techniques in papers, not just the message/importance. T.A. Katie Von Wald was the goat.
Lectures were boring and pretty unrelated to the papers, so I only went when she played the films. The films were interesting and the papers were very broad and easy to write. Super easy class and prof so I recommend it if you need the credit.
attendance wasn't mandatory to pass the class and do good on the essays. class only graded on three essays spaced throughout the quarter and a final paper at the end. super boring lectures, all you really need to do is watch part of the movies and that'll be enough to write the essay. idk if it was just my ta, but she graded easily.
This class I thought was super fun. Professor Bobo had personally interacted with every filmmaker we watched so she had great insight into the films. She gave ample time for discussion and made everyone feel welcome to their own opinions.
The films in this class were really interesting, but Bobo's lectures could be a bit dull. Luckily, I found unstuck ai super helpful for prepping for the papers. Manageable workload overall, just don't skip the films!
