He writes all of the notes on the board and its impossible to read because his handwriting is so messy and small. He also seems like he has no clue what he's teaching because he asks the class questions about his lectures because he isn't sure. He seems like a nice guy but Kahn Academy will teach you more in this class than he did.
Do not take. Whoever thought making someone with a graduate degree in chemistry from Princeton who is mainly here for research purposes teach a chemistry 101 class at the University of Alabama is a fool.
Dr. Allred isn't as bad as the people on here make him seem. He has only been teaching here for one semester so of course he isn't going to be the best at lecturing. Nevertheless, he is obviously very intelligent (a Princeton grad), & he really cares about his students which is honestly much better than several of than the other CH101 professors.
All of his notes are given in class, he doesn't upload them. He's extremely unorganized and not very well at explaining what he is doing. Tests were ridiculously hard and if it wasn't for the homework, lab, and bonus points; I wouldn't have passed his class.
Dr. Allred is not as bad as people make him out to be. He will go out of his way to help you, and answers any questions you may have swiftly. Just because he teaches a rather difficult course (CH 101) does not mean he is a bad teacher. He is a solid teacher and it is very feasible to receive an A in his course as I did.
He was terrible.
He is a very smart professor and goes through practice problems on tests. However, we don't cover everything that is on the tests in class so if you don't try to teach yourself some concepts there is no way to get an A. He is very nice and does want to see his students succeed, but sometimes struggles to convey certain concepts.
Doesn't finish his lectures and likes to skip over things that are "not important" even though it's on the exam. Horrible...
Dr. Allred is a smart guy but a terrible teacher. He does all of his notes handwritten and doesn't upload them which is hard if you don't take good notes or miss class. He doesn't go over a lot of the content that's on the exams and doesn't prepare you at all for the final. Take another professor.
Dr Allred is extremely smart but he has no idea how to dumb it down for the 101 students. He offers extra credit on all of his exams though and it super helpful when you go to his office hours. He's very scatter brained during lecture but one on one he is awesome! If this is your first college level science class though, maybe chose someone else.
I honestly have no idea why Dr. Allred has received such poor reviews. Homework is minimal, lectures are detailed, and the tests are fair. If you are willing to put forth the effort, I strongly recommend his class.
Dr. Allred was a very good teacher. He has a very laid-back attitude which helped me to feel more confident in his class. His notes are horrible. Reading is mandatory if you want to get an A on his tests. I never looked at his notes when I was studying for exams. I always used the book and never got below an A- on any of his tests.
Lectures were sometimes unclear, but Dr. Allred is an okay professor.
Dr. Allred is an intelligent man who knows what he is teaching. His lectures are not great, as he tends to get confused while working problems out and definitely has a problem with communicating information effectively. His tests are hard, but they stay on topic (the final was insane). You get one grade drop and can miss up to 20% of the lectures.
Dr. Allred knows what he is talking about, however he doesn't always do the best job conveying that to the class. Tests are multiple choice, but they are still challenging. I would not recommend him, but he's an OK option if it fits your schedule. Not an easy class at all.
Dr. Allred is the best chem 101 professor you could hope for. He knows Chemistry really well and unlike many professors (especially in the Chemistry field) genuinely cares about his students success. He will go above and beyond to make sure you understand the material and is very approachable/easy to talk to.
Took for CH101. He seems to be better equipped for higher level classes. Material is hard at the end. Study hard and do your own homework and you will easily get a B.
His class was not that hard. As long as you read the book, you will be fine. He is always willing to help you if you do not understand the material.
Doesn't make powerpoint for lectures and teaches in a very confusing manor
He is an okay teacher if you can get a different teacher that would be better but he is fine if he is the only option. you have to show up to class because he has graded questions every class. The tests are pretty hard. he try's to trick you on the questions and puts things he doesn't cover.
Really wouldn't recommend Allred unless you have a significant background in chemistry. He is very disorganized when it comes to lectures and his tests are usually very unpredictable. Be ready to work hard.
Professor Allred is a very intelligent man, however he's not the best at transferring his knowledge to his students. His lectures consist of him working various examples on the projector and none of these examples help prep you for the exams. The main thing to do if you get him for a chemistry course is READ the textbook.
Dr. Allred is a very nice guy and is approachable outside of class; however, his lectures do not really help prepare you for the test. He just does a bunch of examples on the board and does not explain his work very well. Reading the book is the best way to prepare for the tests.
Bad professor if you have no prior knowledge of chemistry.
Manageable for Chem 101. Definitely don't take for Chem 102. He is an absolute genius for what he studies but couldn't teach at this low of a level. Very useless when in came to test-prep
He teaches from the board and there are no notes from him that you can use to study. You must read the textbook and even then you're probably going to need to do research on some of the stuff you're required to know for the exam. He also gives free response questions on the exam so be prepared for that, too.
Dr. Allred made this class way harder than it should have been. The tests are very hard and he doesn't give you hardly anything to prepare for them. His lectures are very confusing and his notes don't really help that much, so definitely read the book if you want to fully comprehend everything. The homework also takes forever.
Allred is a horrible professor. He's a nice guy, sure, but his lectures were always confusing and I never understood them. I stopped attending class because the first exam I got a 49 just from studying the notes from lecture. I started passing the exams (60-70) when I started reading the textbook. Take another professor if you can!!
I do NOT recommend taking Allred. Although he is a nice guy, he is too smart to be a CH 102 professor. I got absolutely nothing out of lecture. No matter how much I studied for the exams, I never got above a C-. Also, his method of taking "attendance" is horrible and hurt my grade even though I showed up to every class.
He is so disorganized during lectures and gives no notes or PowerPoints. READ THE TEXTBOOK and I highly recommend a Chegg account its the only thing that got me through this semester. His tests are totally unrelated to the homework and the lecture so good luck. They are so hard and you will not get a formula sheet so be prepared to memorize
Allred is literally the worst chemistry professor. He assigns ridiculously hard homework, just does examples in class without explaining what he's doing, and makes his test ridiculously hard. His tests are barely related to the lecture and come entirely out of insanely long book chapters. He also makes you memorize dozens of equations for no reason
Dr. Allred is better than some of the other chem professors on campus, but he has no gauge for how hard his tests are. Fortunately, the textbook teaches very well, so I stopped attending class. His lectures would probably be useful if you read ahead of time because he does problem examples. Also, we don't get formula sheets for tests
Since he does not put notes online, it is necessary to attend class. His style of teaching is unique but once you get used to it, he is a fair professor. I chose to take him again for CH 102 because the tests are fair and he is very helpful in recitation and office hours. Compared to most other chemistry professors, Allred is a great choice.
The best thing you can do for yourself in this class is read the textbook and take your own notes from that to study. It is a difficult class but if you are able to put in a fair amount of time it is manageable. Lectures make more sense if you read ahead in the book. Attendance isn't required but he started online quizzes based on class examples.
He's a nice guy but not qualified to teach. His lectures were all over the place and not well thought out. I came to every class but I did not feel like I should have as I just got more confused than I was before I came. Most people did better just to teach themselves using the textbook. I probably should have.
Worst thing about this professor is the organization of the class, or lack thereof. Overall he doesnt seem to be any thought out plan and he can easily jump from topic to topic wirhout any sort of conclusion. I personally have yet to use the textbook. Bur you might be better off using that instead.
I had Allred for 101 and am choosing to take him again for 102 because even though he may be a bit disorganized, he does know what he's talking about. He is willing to help and explain things so you understand fully. His tests are easy if you pay attention in class and do the homework. Overall he's a better prof than others for basic chem.
Allred is a solid chem professor. Hes always willing to stop the class and help you understand the material. He does have a tendency though to dismiss questions that are out of the span of the class saying youll do that in upper level classes and things like that.
Clearly portrays material and cares about students. Tests arent too bad but the homework is really hard.
Prof. Allred is extremely smart, however it is hard to learn from his lectures because a lot of stuff he says goes over your head. Reading the book is probably your only saving grace. Theres 4 tests and homework as far as grades go. No extra credit period.
Dr. Allred was a very great teacher. He truly cared about students and asked for feedback. He would explain things very clearly, but he also made it clear that everything in the book is fair game for tests. There were no surprises, and the homework prepared you very well.
Best advice is to read the text book. He goes over and reteaches many things. Is easily distracted and jumps around topics.
He is really smart and he even let me do some makeup work to improve my grade. He is really disorganized and all over the place, but he knows the material.
Dr. Allred is a great teacher for students who have a thorough understanding of chemistry. In my opinion, he taught chemistry 101 in a way that was a lot more complicated than it should have been. Majority of his lectures went right over my head. If you are good at chemistry, you will be fine. If not, well good luck!
Dont bother going to his lectures, helpful in office hours, does not take attendance and gives a decent amount of homework, but not too much. His tests were very hard, and I would suggest studying very well and reading the book. He is very smart and knows the material well, he just has trouble teaching it to a large group.
Allred is a super nice guy who wants all of his students to do well. However, his lectures can be long, boring, and don't always cover all that is on his tests. I read the book and have found it to be super helpful. That, combined with some previous chemistry knowledge and a lot of effort should get you through this course with a good grade.
This is definitely a class you will have to teach yourself the material. To make a decent grade, I recommend reading the chapters at least twice and taking notes on them as you do the homework. He also gives online pop-quizzes which he announces in class, so make sure to check Mastering after class days if you choose not to go.
His lecture style is pretty boring and the textbook is a better teacher than him. He does give more specific advice about what will be on the test in class. He also had a bonus question on each test that was based on stuff in class. As long as you study enough you'll do fine. Compared to the other CH 101 classes, he assigns way more homework.
Gives more homework than other CH 102 classes. As long as you read the textbook thoroughly before exams, you will be ok. Beware of after class quizzes uploaded to Mastering. He isn't great about reminding the class about them and they are only available for a few days. If you don't constantly check Mastering, there's a good chance you'll miss them.
Allred is very nice and respects his students, but he is just too smart to teach a lower level chem class. I taught myself through the book and practice problems and never really listened in lecture. He does give bonus questions, and little quizzes online that can help your grade.
Jared Allred is, hands down, the WORSE chemistry professor at the university. The best decision you could make is to NOT take his class at all.
Dr. Allred is a great teacher for beginning chemistry students. His lectures tend to feel slow for chemistry majors and people with a lot of prior knowledge going in, but they are effectively paced for those that are not in this group. Be sure to read the textbook before class, and bring questions! He is happy to answer all questions respectfully!
A real gem. He's a true chemistry nerd in the best way possible. In lectures, you get the sense that he genuinely loves the material, which makes it easy to learn from him. He's extremely caring. If you're confused, his office hours are very helpful. The homework is much harder than the tests, so if you can do it, you're probably in good shape.
Allred is a good guy, and a solid chemistry professor. Lectures aren't outstanding, but they will prepare you for the exams. The exams, thereof, are completely fair and representative of the lecture material. Come to lectures, complete your homework, study enough, and everything should be fine. Note that the CH117 lab is a bit ridiculous at times.
Professor Allred might be one of the nicest, funniest people on this planet. He is super smart. Unfortunately, lots of the material is over the students' heads because of his in-depth knowledge. Great guy though, so if you are good at Chem, you would enjoy his class.
Dr. Allred is an amazing professor. You can tell he really loves what he's teaching and wants his students to do well. Sometimes, he can have a hard time explaining things on a student's level, but he's fantastic the rest of the time. Make sure you get to know him and go to recitation for this class because it can make all the difference
Dr. Allred is the sweetest guy you'll ever meet and gets so excited about chemistry. His lectures can be a little hard to follow at times but go to office hours and he really wants to help you. My advice is to get to know him and he will help you succeed! Tests were very fair based on the textbook, lectures, and homework. 11/10 guy
Dr. Allred is a very, very smart man. His lectures were a challenge though. Notes were all over the place and it was difficult to understand how things connected. Probably easy for people that took AP, challenging for those that did not. Had him for 101 and 102, and by 102 I taught myself with the book and everything made so much more sense.
He's a very very smart person, but a little intense for Chem-117. If you really like chemistry, and don't mind reading from the book, take him, he'll be your fit, otherwise, if you do take him, get ready to learn from the book. I'm sure during a normal schedule, the class would have been different, but during Covid-19, class was a little rough.
Dr. Allred was a nice guy who I think wanted us to succeed, but he should not be teaching a 101 class. He spoke to us like senior Chem students and expected us to know all sorts of chemistry coming into the class. I was not required to take chemistry in high school so that blind sided me. He also rambles and goes on a lot of confusing tangents
Take him if you want to learn by reading the book. Lectures are messy and unorganized. I'm not sure if it is normally this way during in person classes, but it felt like he gave up on being prepared for class towards the middle & end of the year. Can give off very rude responses when you ask questions. He lso makes many errors when solving examples
I stopped going to lectures halfway through the semester because he would go off on these awful tangents and his lectures were horribly disorganized. The amazing chem teacher I had in high school for 3 years is the only thing that got me an A. If you've never taken chem, DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you plan to intensely study chem in the future, lol go on
He seems very passionate about chemistry, but he's a bit unorganized. He gets kinda upset when he sees that no one is going to his lectures. He gives plenty of time to ask questions, but doesn't always answer them well. He also goes off talking about other chemistry things that aren't important sometimes.
If you have another option for professor, please take it. Allred was constantly re-uploading answer keys and fixing homework and test questions that had the wrong answers to them. Tests are impossible, and lectures were spent taking up 50 minutes to do one problem.
Dr. Allred's love for chemistry and his students shows when he teaches. He genially wants you to succeed and provides practice tests and HW if you want to make use. His note taking is sometimes hard to follow, but he is always willing to go back, explain again, and provide more examples. He is understanding and often accommodates for his students.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ONLINE. He's a really nice guy, but i feel like i learned more physics than chemistry in his class. His test are hard. The homework is very time consuming. He also had a test during dead week where there are not suppose to be any assignments. He does drop your lowest test grade.
Chemistry is a super hard subject for me and I know others can relate as well, but I loved Dr. Allred's class and his teaching style. He is a bit nerdy, but he writes out his notes in class with you and goes through MANY example problems. We always had homeworks and optional practice exams posted before the tests, so I always knew what to expect.
If you don't already have a good chemistry foundation don't take him. He is a great person and super nice but he doesn't teach that great. He goes off on a tangent that useless for homework and test. He does give practice exams which help understand what is going to be on the test, but be prepared to teach yourself.
Dont take if youre looking to fill science/honors credits. The homework and tests were barely related. His lectures were fine, but sometimes hed talk about stuff that had zero importance. My biggest gripe was the jump of difficulty from homework to tests-seemed completely unreasonable.
Professor Allred is amazing chemistry professor. He is extremely helpful and understanding when helping students and tries to communicate everything in the best way he can. He's extremely considerate and can be an absolute live-saver. Also has recitations for extra help. Nothing is mandatory but highly recommend you attend as the course is hard.
Allred is a nice person, but he's really bad at teaching the material. He explains how concepts work and goes into tangents about them, but doesn't actually teach what they are. Unless I learned about the topic in APChem, I had no idea what he was talking about. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire class by the book if you have him.
His lectures are meandering and often all over the place. If you took AP Chem, the course is a good review, but I would recommend you to READ THE TEXTBOOK if you want to get anything out of the course.
His notes and lectures were just all over the place. Covering new material the day of the exam, omitting a lot of key examples and details, and difficult free response portions on exams are some of the things you will experience when taking his chem class. He would go on tangents about crystals and elements that you would have to know on the exam
Attendance isn't exactly mandatory because he doesn't check but he doesn't post notes/lectures so if you don't go, you will basically never actually get the material. He is willing to answer questions and his tests actually aren't nearly as difficult as other chem teachers
Dr. Allred is a pretty funny guy. He comes to class and is ready to laugh and have a good time. I honestly hardly ever ended up going to class after the first month or so and still finished the course with an A. Just be sure to do the homework and PLEASE READ THE MATERIAL. If you read and understand the stuff you'll ace the tests.
Professor Allred was great! He is very passionate about chemistry and you can definitely tell just by sitting in his lectures. During lecture he takes notes so be sure to attend class because thats where majority of the notes come from. He can get side tracked very easily in class but he is very good at providing feedback if you have questions.
He answers any and all questions during and after lecture and will make office hours to fit his students needs. Just be vocal with what you understand as a class and the test will reflect that. He will never try to trick you.
Professor Allred is great! All you have to do for this class is read the textbooks and do the practice problems in them. He has quizzes due sometimes randomly, but if you just make sure to check, you really don't need to go to class that much. His tests were very straight forward, which is rare for chemistry.
this is my second time taking dr allred and he is honestly a good prof. attendance isnt mandatory but if you don't go, you're not going to get any notes bc he doesnt post lectures at all. he shows his sense of humor sometimes so i consider him pretty easygoing and he really really does care whether hes getting his teachings across to his students.
Allred is a very smart and nice guy. He knows what he is talking about, but does not know how to teach it to others. Would have done a lot better in the class if he had just 1 review day before he started right into his first lesson, especially being a student who took 101 in the spring. His notes that he writes on the board are also very messy.
Dr. Allred is a super nice guy and very obviously a genius, however, he's too smart for a gen chem class. Often, he got carried away on tangents about minute details that were interesting, but a bit too advanced for this class. He is super helpful and definitely wants the best for his students, though.
So sweet but I didn't love the class. He's too smart for gen chem and goes too far in detail so some of us were confused by the end of class. Doesn't post lectures and handwriting can be super hard to read but he will clarify if ur unsure. Ur better off reading the textbook than going to class. As much as I love Dr.A, I would take someone else
Dr. Allred is a caring professor who wants his students to do well. His lectures are a bit unorganized, so I'd recommend reading the textbook as well. His exams aren't too tough and he usually gives some points back. I had Dr. Vincent for CH-101 and Dr. Allred is 100x better. He makes great use of recitation and is happy to answer questions.
He RAMBLED so much. His handwriting was awful, and his PowerPoints did not help at all. The math problems were random at times, and the disorganization bothered me. I almost got a C, but the final was a lot easier than his regular exams. Do not take.
loved the class
Super boring to sit in lectures and his handwriting is not great. He does not post any material outside of class, so lecture attendance is pretty much the only way to learn. Gives extra credit back on test (gave me 13% back on one) which is awesome. Overall not too bad, but you definitely have to put the work in.
I ♡ Dr. Allred! So nice and patient with students. He provides everything you need to succeed - practice tests that are similar to exams, short quizzes that pad your grade, and half-points on exams. His lectures can be confusing, but if you read before class you can keep up. Im saying all this at someone who sucks at chem so I mean it all!!
Dr. Allred is just too smart for this course. His lectures are taught like you already know the material, and he doesn't post video or ppt. He's a nice guy, and gives half credit back on missed test problems, but is just too hard for gen chem. He was too hard for me as someone who comes from a chem background. Take someone better if you can.
If you don't get at least a B, it's your fault, not Dr. Allred's. He's so caring, and gives back credit to his students all the time. He makes it clear that reading the textbook is required - of course it is, this is chemistry not linear algebra. He even has a reading schedule so you can show up to lectures prepared and follow along. Very nice guy
Professor Allred is super nice and cares about his students. With that being said, he is SO smart that his lectures confused me. I eventually quit attending lectures and taught myself everything from the textbook. His tests are relatively straightforward and he gives a lot of credit back and sometimes curves which is super helpful.
Dr. Allred is nice professor but is way too smart to teach chem 101. He sometimes goes too in depth during lecture and it's easy to get confused. If you ask, he'll explain things in a better way to help you understand and even in a class of 100 people will try to learn your name if you go to class. Biggest suggestion is to go to the recitation.
Professor Allred is a great professor, you can really tell that he cares about his students. He gives partial credit on tests and provides practice exams that are structured the same as the actual test. As long as you attend most lectures, do homework, and do the practice exams, you will do well, from someone who barely passed chem in high school.
