He's an amazing professor that really loves the gospel. If I could, I'd take all my religion classes from him. The midterm and final are essays, you have to present once, do online easy quizzes everyday, and write a weekly summary of what you've read that week. Honestly the discussions we have in class are the most eye opening that I've had.
He's an amazing teacher. The way he opens up class by asking interesting questions helps students engage in the conversation. He knows how to get the class to participate in a way that creates a learning environment for all. He genuinely cares about the students and wants them to succeed. I highly recommend him.
Awesome teacher and is very good at explaining things. The class isn't hard, it just requires a lot of time outside of class reading. If you do the reading and participate, it is an easy A.
Very enthusiastic about teaching Religion, but sometimes it felt like he made it out to be like Major classes. He told us to expect studying 6 extra hours a week for his class. (2 credit) I think Religion classes need to feel non stressful. Many people enjoyed him, but his and my personality did not mesh very well. He does know a lot though :)
I suffered in his class. He makes it seem like it is a major class and made it super stressful when religion classes are not even supposed to be that way. I felt a lot of pressure in his class and he requires A LOT of his students as if it is a 3-4 credit class. Don't take him unless you want to suffer.
There was so much unnecessary work for a 100 level class. Also, didn't teach anything about the Book of Mormon (the course topic). Instead he makes you find passages relating to the scripture you just read NOT from the Book of Mormon. It's like signing up for an English class and the professor teaching chemistry. I'm trying to help, DON'T TAKE HIM!
Gives more homework than the usual religion teachers, but as long as you answer them, you'll get a perfect score.
Despite Covid and having to take online classes, he made Religion class fun and easy. He gives good feedback and is quick to respond. Definitely take his class!
In his class, you will get a full score if you complete your HW. It is not a hard class. The teacher is kind.
Over all super great! The point system is just a little whack... miss one 5 point assignment and get dropped by at least 7% lol
I think that he sets up his class well and is pretty inspired. This isn't necessarily a religion class where you do nothing, he has tests and 2 quizzes a week. But all easy just participate stuff. The only this is he has a final at the end where you need to memorize some things, that final is tough. overall this was a good class though
Good professor.
The semester that I took this class, there were no lectures, just reading and quizzes. I wish he would have given some lectures. Also the course wasn't separated into modules, so it was really hard to notice when something was due. Overall, it was kind of disorganized and hard to follow for a religion class. More effort than most religion classes.
He is a great professor and cares about the success and understanding of his students. His online course was easy to navigate and the assignments are simple and straightforward.
I don't like the quiz at the end of the semester, where he quizzes on where certain stuff is in the Book of Mormon.
He truly cares about his students and that they understand what he is trying to teach so he is always available if you have questions. The canvas page was very easy to direct so it was easy to tell what you needed to get done. The assignments were very straightforward and he gives you plenty of context to help answer questions on the homework.
Great teacher, egregious time quizzes that won't count unless you match the 90-minute mark. Not a fan of that. Other than that it's a good class and he's open to questions. If you don't mind having the weekly class time enforced on you, it's a great class.
The Homeworks are not that hard but it does take time to think and search the reading materials/assignments given. There are also discussion groups from time to time which makes this class less boring. The discussion group is mainly to talk about the things we learned from the assigned reading. Overall, great class.
Really enjoyed this class , Great professor always willing to answer questions about tough topics! This class can be heavy on the workload but it is all great stuff that is fun to learn about! Class has great lectures and also awesome extra credit opportunities.
Its an easy class and Jared is understanding.
Good professor. He cares about his students and is willing to help. Slightly heavy workload but content is not difficult, just time consuming. Good class!
He is a great professor.
He is a great professor. He cares about the students. He is very understanding of students' concerns. I like how he teachers with clarity and it is easy to follow along with the study guide.
Pretty easy homework. Workload is manageable, even in Spring semester. Follows a pattern so you know what to expect. Easy A if you just turn in all the assignments. Good balance between not giving you too much workload and still bringing the scriptures into your life.
The average religion course. Majority of the course content revolves around Saints vol 1 (free on Church website). He gives great feedback and delves deep into the material. Final test requires a lot of memorization of names and dates. Not a difficult class but a little time-consuming.
There was 1.5 to 2 hours of homework 3 times a week which was a lot for a religion class, but he still was a very nice guy and he wanted to help everyone out. Also gave really good answers to anyone with questions.
He is a great professor, he seems to truly care about his students and that they are learning the material well. There is a lot of homework for a religion class, but as long as you do all your reading and give thoughtful answers on the study guides you'll do well.
He is a great teacher. Kind of long lectures. You need to actually do the readings to succeed. Doesn't ask for anything too much and is very thorough.
Way too much homework for a religion class. Seriously. Way. Too. Much. I also hated being tested on scriptures. For a religion class I don't want to feel like it's another class to stress over, yet I found myself doing more work with this class, than my biopsychology class.
Brother Marcums class was great. There is a lot of reading and if online do NOT miss those mandatory zoom meetings. I missed one and spent the rest of the semester trying to recover from it. Good lectures though they are long but great doctrinal class.
Fantastic class. I started the class late, and he reached out to me several times to see what I needed help with. He was very patient and understanding.
"Asynchronous class" I missed one group zoom meeting and asked him if I could watch the zoom video and reply in the comments he said no. Dropped my grade from a 94 to an 88. Taken his in person classes and loved it, online not so much. Also, expect to spend at least 7 hours a week reading. Some assignments are testimony based, so be aware.
He gives way too much homework for a religion class in my opinion. He is great at communicating with students outside of class and is prompt with responding. But he gives great feedback on homework and gives quotes and links to conferences if you ever ask questions.
there's some work but those are easy to do
He really cares for his student. He immediately reaches out when there is a concern. He also discusses the lessons well with valuable resources. When it comes to grading assignments, he is also very considerate. As long as you show effort in his class, he will acknowledge it.
He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, meaning that there are chances to fix past mistakes.
Great teacher! Gives many opportunities to ask any questions that you have about the gospel and is willing to meet over zoom too if you want! He is accessible and emails back very quick too. Very grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from him, big thank you to Brother M for being so patient and understanding!
I took his Religion 121 class online and it was great. He's very detailed when he's teaching and gives great feedback. He also gives opportunities through extra credits to help student at the end of the course. I enjoyed his class, I also like the group zoom meetings, I wish we had more sessions, those were really inspiring.
I took his 341 Religion class and I truly enjoy his teaching methods. The material used was amazing which helped me understand what we are learning. The professor truly cares about his student if you need any help with the class.
You need to learn a lot about church history, but it is within personal study. Good course.
Good class, professor cares for his students & cares about the coursework
I really like this course because he offers good feedback on my assignment. It helps me to give chance to improve myself.
He is a great teacher. If you really want to learn and get closer to Jesus Christ then take him as a teacher. If you are lazy, then don't.
Great class to learn more about church history. Class had great structure and professor always had great feedback. Great religion class!
Such a great Professor and always willing to help out
Amazing teacher who is easy to reach. Assignments are time consuming, but you can learn a lot from them
Personable teacher. Lays out his lectures to help students better understand the lecture.
he gives good feedback, through our group discussion and that shows us that he cares about us.
1 or 2 study guides per week (30 to 1.5 hours depending on how slow you are). A finals paper. A foundational test - basically you have to remember things about class. Encourages student to ask questions. Gives great feedback.
Excellent professor. Very genuine and supports students asking questions. Great guy who cares. The class contains 2-3 study guides per week that take about 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on how in-depth you go. A foundational test at the end of the semester that tests your scriptural knowledge, and a theme paper at the end of the semester.
He was awesome
Definitely one of the better religion teachers in my opinion. He requires lots of reading, but luckily the reading is interesting. All of the assignments are clear and upfront. Not the easiest religion course, but an A is very possible if you just do the work on time. Great experience!
Great teacher, was very helpful with me as we are still online here at school. He gives a decent amount of reading, and was good in making us aware that reading assignments shouldn't take linger than 2 hours. Has all the information for test and quizzes and does not surprise or trick in the tests. He has good lectures too.
Great readings and lecture points but sometimes parts of the study guides felt like busy work. Loved the correlation of scripture and textbook reading.
Overall was a good class, a lot of memorization of dates and names. If that's not a strength of yours, the last exam will be difficult. However, a study guide can easily be made. Just need to put in the effort.
Very Organized with lesson
Brother Marcumtaks a lot of effort in the class. He is very patient in teaching the doctrine and principles from the scripture. Even though some study guides you have to write 2 to 3 times a week, it is worth learning more deep doctrine.
He is very knowledgeable about the topics discussed and made learning the topics really engaging and interesting.
This class is important because it helps you learn materials that will help you spiritually and physically. I would recommend it to take it normal semesters but not during spring because it has lots of homework.
I think you learn a lot from this course both spiritually and physically. However, there is lots of homework, and missing a zoom meeting really messes your grade up because you can't make up that work, which for me was the only thing I didn't like. Other than that, this class was great.
It might have a little more homework than the other religion class that I have taken in school. But the homework is helpful for you to identify the major point of the scripture. You can learn something different in every class
I really enjoy taking his class even though it is a bit more reading and homework. I feel like you get a deeper meaning of the Book of Mormon and you create principles and connections. Super nice professor.
Very good teacher. Made sure that we understood what we were learning.
This is a great class! The lectures are amazing and I have learned so much. Take classes from this professor if you can!
A great teacher! He teaches clear gospel principles as well as how to apply them into our lives.
Good class and Good teacher. He had really great insights and is helpful. There is a huge memorization chunk for this class so be ready for that, but over all a great class. I would take it again and I would take religion classes from him again. He isnt like some religion teachers who make the classes way hard.
Overall, a good solid course. He made lots of videos for us to watch and did a good job explaining doctrinal principles in them. There was about 3 assignments per week on average (during the spring semester), and it wasnt too much or too little. He often gave me feedback on my assignments and was open for questions.
I love that our teacher provides specific comments on what he needs me to improve on and that I won't make the same mistake over and over again.
Was a really good course outline.
My experience was a great one.
He is a great professor. I like his passion for the gospel and he gave great feedbacks. He is inspiring as well. You just have to listen.
Very informative and gives extra credit.
He solves all of your questions about the Book of Mormon. The best religion course teacher ever.
Love Professor Marcum's class!
It is such a fun class. He gives great insights to the Book of Mormon. If he was teaching Book of Mormon 2 next semester I would choose his class in a heartbeat. He is honestly my favorite class this year. His workload is super easy and he is very understanding. Take him you wont regret it!
A great professor and knows his stuff. There are a lot of group discussions in his class that allow for great conversations about the Book of Mormon. Attendance does matter in his class and make sure to show up on time. Homework is very manageable, only reading and taking notes twice a week. He is very insightful.
Great teacher! Answers almost all questions asked. Kind guy.- good feedback. Lots of hw- not hard just a lot- but creates a good discussion. Thanks for teaching bro marcum!
Awesome teacher, provides really solid feedback and is so open minded to all questions.
Great teacher. Full of enthusiasm. His class is clear and easy to understand. More interesting and learned a lot
A two credit class that made my semester and load lighter. I always look forward to attend his class.
It was a great class. Really inspired professor and has taught me a lot that I have never learned before while studying the Book of Mormon.
I LOVE THIS CLASS!
Awesome teacher. Very open to questions which helps everyone learn a lot.
This class helped me understand the gospel and the book of mormon at a deeper level and helped answer some questions I have always had. I definitely recommend this class
I've taken several classes from him and each is touching and incredibly spiritual. His study guides have a fair amount of writing but it helps you think deeply about the scriptures. Small amount of hw, and I usually don't like group discussions but the in-class ones are good. He always has really good inputs and references for your questions.
Jared is a very good religion teacher. I appreciate that he teaches by the spirit and not a standard handbook. With being able to ask questions and discuss as a class each day has been very beneficial for me during this semester. Would definitely recommend Jared and taking REL121 to other students.
He is a great teacher! There will be an actual test at the end of the semester and you do have to show up to class. But his classes are great and he does everything he can to answer your questions!
He is definitely a great teacher! Easy A and the class is chill, so just come and enjoy it!
He's a great professor and answers any questions you have. As long as you do the reading and show up to class, you will get an A.
It is a very spiritual class and you will get a lot of ideas from your classmates and instructor. We will share our thoughts from each assignment with the class group. I was a little uncomfortable with the style in which the teacher randomly assigned students several times during the class and asked for their opinions.
I love his way of teaching
He's a good teacher, it's a very easy class.
He's great!! I love his classes and he truly inspired me!
This class is easy if you do the reading. There isn't a lot of big things but small things that adds up. He is well respected and respects our time, questions, and thoughts. This is a class learning more about the true teachings of Jesus Christ and he has done a fantastic job in doing so..
He has a positively unique way of teaching students. He loves to help students to get the answers of their questions.
I really enjoyed this class. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. If you keep up with the reading, this class will be easy. He is always willing to answer questions and leads good discussions.
Is a kind and amazing teacher and has a vast knowledge of the Gospel. His assignments are very self motivated and require you to actually try and actually think about what you are reading. The course is all scripturally based and has heavy emphasis on learning doctrines and learning how to study the scriptures.
it's much better than an average "sunday school" church class. He makes sure to answer our questions and have discussions.
He really knowledgeable when it comes to teaching scriptures. He is very clear with his syllabus, and he expects students to participate in group discussion. 2 study journals needs to be submitted every week. He grades based on students' efforts in his class.
He is one of my greatest professors, he is always prepared and gives very inspirational lessons.
Great class. I liked the opportunity to study alongside the study guide he created. He always answered our concerns and questions before teaching what he planned.
I love his class so much as the mood of the class is very openly for everyone to share their thought. He never check if we are done our assignment for sure or not. I feel so much thankful he gave lot's of opportunity to make our grade higher. The most impressive way of his teaching is his teaching is always based on all the students' question!
Take this class. Its not an average BYUH required class. He is full of so much knowledge and insight and makes studying and learning truly special. Such a nice and caring guy, so take a class from him. You will learn so much from him.
He is flexible for students first and he has an interest in each student. His lessons are well prepared.
He is really a great professor, but the amount of assignment that he gives is pretty heavy, especially final project is too much work.
Great teacher, great class!!
He's great!
he is great, I highly recommend
Despite having regular study guide homework that requires constant effort throughout the semester, he will give you quality lessons that are inspiring and very informative. He will address many questions from the doctrinal point of view even some of the questions that could be somewhat sensitive in a comprehensive manner, based on official sources.
Every class is organized around our questions. Very student oriented. Homework includes reading 5-6 pages in the Book of Mormon and writing what we learned in a study guide.
He is a great teacher
Great teacher. Hard class for only being 2 credits, but still got a lot out of it. Always felt the spirit and was comfortable in his class.
great teacher really wants you to enjoy and learn about the book of mormon. always gives time to answer questions. graded on scripture reading which makes you do it but if you hate reading then not for you, i really enjoyed this class favorite religion class yet
Brother Marcum made sure we understood everything and answered every question perfectly
Brother Marcum gives really good lesson! Love his class and learned a lot.
