Jared was there for us. He gave us extra credit to remove a brain whole and undamaged from a fetal pig! That was a fun night. Jared is an interesting professor. He can get side tracked often, but he has so much knowledge regarding infectious diseases.
This class made me change my major. I felt that I had to work entirely too hard for an intro level course. The first few weeks are going to seem impossible, but stick in there Dr. J will try to help you with additional assignments to help you understand the material.
Dr. Rutledge was easily one of the hardest professors I've ever taken, although that's not always a bad thing. He made biology so interesting and his lectures were very entertaining and easy to follow. However, he makes you really work for your grade. He's incredibly smart and is by far one of my favorite professors so far.
Dr. Rutledge is the best! He is so funny and entertaining to listen to! But because of that, I kind of got distracted by his funniness, therefore making the class harder. It is a tough class, but if you want something that will entertain you and keep your attention, I would definitely recommend him.
Doctor Rutledge is hands down one of the greatest professors at Clovis Community College.
Dr. Rutledge is an amazing professor and would highly recommend taking his class. He definitely makes you work for your grade, but i learned so much from his class and enjoyed his lectures.
Dr. Rutledge is a great professor. I've never been a fan of biology (honestly, I still dislike it very much) but he made it entertaining. There are a few writing assignments/essays, and homework is due each week. He offers 2 points extra credit each week if you write a paragraph on current biology news. Attendance is graded, so be careful!
best teacher ever yo
Rutledge is challenging. If there are too many As on an exam, he makes the exams more difficult. I did not think the students should be punished for doing well. I enjoyed his lectures and he knows a lot about microbiology.
The study guides for the lecture exams aren't always helpful. You must take notes and study. Labs are fun and exciting. For extra credit he makes you write a summary on a news article that is health related. There are 2 essays that are required but he's pretty lenient when it comes to grading them. I would definitely take his class again.
Lectures are straight from power point downloads, deduct points for being absent, there are quizzes in both lecture and lab, exams for both lecture and lab, a term paper due and presentation, plus side he does give extra credit. If there's too may A's on an exam he does make it harder the next one.
This class has a ton of points available, and lots of extra credit. Even if you did bad on a few tests you could still easily get an A as long as you put the work in. Don't expect the tests to be easy though! This teacher really wants to see his students succeed, and will make sure you leave class knowing useful info for nursing and other fields.
I have taken BIO 5, and BIO31 with Dr. Rutledge. His classes have lots of points, and weekly extra credit assignments. His tests aren't easy, but his study guides cover everything on the test plus a little extra. His lectures are hilarious and entertaining. He is also a fantastic lab instructor.
I love science but was not excited at all about taking micro. Dr. Rutledge started talking and I was hooked. He makes a large amount of material memorable and funny. For this man micro is life, he loves this subject and is serious about it. The tests are hard but if you do the homework(and extra credit), study and come to class you can pass.
I enjoyed spending several hours in Dr. J's office. I've had plenty of experience where professors say they want to help you but all they want to do is answer my questions with a question. Dr. Rutledge is the exact opposite. He explains the material in an understandable way and its easy to see that he wants his hard working students to succeed.
He's an excellent professor. Has experience and knowledge & clearly loves Teaching. Class is always interesting & he's always willing to help or explain. He clearly tells you what to study or focus on for exams, so apply it. Offers E.C. Weekly and in lab so do it. Effort is required. Hilarious/really nice guy. Made micro understandable/bearable.
Mr. Rutledge is clearly passionate about microbiology. His lectures keep you interested with real life examples he has encountered plus he is a funny guy. He gives studyguides for all his tests but as others have said, if a test gets too many A's he makes the next one harder.
Rutledge is easily one of the fastest teachers I have had at Clovis. He has the work back to you with feedback very quickly. The class is not easy, but he is organized and provides study guides.
Dr. Rutledge is an amazing professor. He makes biology so much fun, he's always making jokes and he really gets to know his students. He does really get a kick out of how hard his exams are but he gives you everything in order to pass. He's a grey lab instructor as well. He teachers bio5,20,22,&31. I would recommend him for all.
It was a waste of money. Poor class management. I did learn nothing.
Took micro, bio5, and anatomy from Dr. J. I enjoyed the classes. He is always there for you and will help you outside of office hours just to make sure you get it.
If you are thinking about taking professor Rutledges class DONT. I took his class this semester because I heard great things about him from his previous sections. However, this semester it seems that hes made a complete 180. He rushes to get though material and doesn't actually teach. My whole class has felt unprepared when it come to our exams.
Dr. J is such an awesome professor! He seems intimidating, but in reality, he is such a softy! And he cares! yes, his exams are hard, SO he can make sure you try hard and study for the material, REGARDLESS. Theres over 50+ points extra credit. Come on. He is awesome!!! If you TRY your best, you will get a high grade in the class. I promise u
Dr. J is super approachable! He wants you to succeed. Is the class easy? No! Heck no! Gosh Dang No! You will learn a lot and he will support you along the way. You have to study, you have to go to office hours, you have to work ahead. If you do these things, you will rock the class
VERY FUNNY
i love this professor! I am sad this is the only class i get with him. he is a must!!!
Dr. Rutledge is the most hilarious professor I've had throughout college. He is an amazing teacher! He is available for office hours and helps so much with anything you need. He emails back within minutes most times which is very very helpful. The class is VERY tough but all you have to do is try hard and you will get a good grade.
I absolutely love Dr. Rutledge! So knowledgeable. Youll do study modules online, you will have one paper, PLENTY of extra credit opportunities, your lab manuals will be your lab participation grade & theyre checked before each lab exam, & then of course the lab & lecture exams. Taking notes and reading material is beneficial. Dont skip class.
Funny, Entertaining. He has office hours. Offers plenty of extra credit. Just write an article summary each week. Do your homework assignments (which is online and easy points. The test is not that hard, if you study or review the homework. Ez A (Made it to an A-) if you work really hard, do extra credits, attend lectures and lab.
I enjoyed the class a lot, Dr. Rutledge is very fun too learn from. He made me laugh every day. As for the class it self, do the extra credit and don't turn in the term paper late. I will definitely come back to this professor for another Bio class in the future.
Dynamic and engaging lectures. That said, we ended up a few weeks behind in lecture due to his tangents, so some material ended up not being covered and/or glossed over. 50+ points of extra credit possible. If you're content with your grade prior to the final exam, then you have the option not to take it. Scores posted quickly (e.g., day after)!
Hilarious and entertaining guy. I had him for both lab and lecture and he is my favorite science teacher to date. Each week there will be a good load of work to be done and that is expected for a 4 unit class. He does offer extra credit every week that can add up to 34 ec points by the end of the term and curves the exams for the first half of term
Dr. R class was very interesting! Very smart guy! Expects you to know a lot! This class will keep you on your feet! It's a lot of work due each week! Good luck!
I took Bio 3 with Rutledge and let me tell you, it was a blast. I hate science so much but he made it very interesting and fun. He always kept class light even though we went through a-lot of material. He would always round our test scores or give extra credit all the time. In the end I has a 68.47% in the class but he rounded it up to a C.
I had a blast in Micro. I learned a lot. There is a ton of work. The work and lectures help you on the exams. RECORD HIS LECTURES! He drops test questions in his lectures like crazy. Turn in everything and don't wait until the last minute for homeworks for the paper. He provides extra credit for early submission of the paper.
Taking Dr. Rutledge's class was the best experience I've had yet in college. His passion that he has for science makes his lectures and labs incredibly interesting. Very easy to like and easy to ask questions to as well. I look forward to taking physio and micro with him!
This class (micro) was the most difficult undergrad class I have taken, BUT he gives out so many opportunities for extra credit that you can easily get an A. The lectures are very interesting and clinically based (good for future healthcare employees). He is sarcastic and blunt, so if you're sensitive you might not like his teaching style.
Dr. Rutledge is very knowledgeable and has a sense of humor. He was entertaining during lectures... lots of laughs. He is also a very tough teacher and has high expectations for his students, but his class is passable. Just be prepared to put in a lot of work. You will definitely leave his class with a ton of new knowledge. Great teacher!
Great professor. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT FROM THE START OF CLASS! The test questions come from the HW and the slides so be prepared to study both. I received a D on most tests and still passed with a B. You have plenty of chances to redeem your grade. Again, study the slides and HW questions.
Loads of work, large research paper, the professor provides a lot of support.
Rutledge wants his students to understand the material. His exams are hard but if you study the homework and nail the essay questions, you can pass them. I came in worried but as long as you try, there is so much support shown & opportunities given. His class taught me how to be a hard worker and I Wouldnt want to take the course with anyone else.
I loved this course! Dr. Rutledge is by far the best teacher to take microbiology with. Lectures heavy but explains everything. I felt that I really actually learned something rather just learning what was required. WOULD TAKE ANOTHER CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Not only is Dr. Rutledge very knowledgeable of his craft, he is well respected and above all hilarious and approachable. This is a class where if you show up and study you will get a good grade. He puts forth the effort for students who care and show up. Lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Rutledge is a walking encyclopedia. Yes, it's hard. Yes, you have to study. BUT, you will walk away with remembering a lot. STUDY EVERYDAY. Do all assignments ahead of time. Ask him for help. He will proof read in advance. He seriously wants you to learn. Take advantage of that. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH ANOTHER HARD CLASS.
RUTLEDGE!!!!!!!! Fun, sarcastic, and dark sense of humor
Make sure you start on all your work early. He will give you ideas, research, or help you read articles. I was stuck on a few sections of my paper and Rutledge searched out articles, printed them off, and highlighted specific areas of the articles to focus on.
The class is as straight forward as Rutledge can make it. Many of the students in my class did not want to put in the effort. Each exam gets harder as you go through the course, but the extra credit opportunities are many and Rutledge will help.
Rutledge is very knowledgeable and makes the class as easy as possible for his students. He covers a lot in lectures but makes it very entertaining and funny with his dark sense of humor and stories. He offers easy E.C. every week (highly recommend doing it since it raises grade up at the end) and we do one final term paper and presentation. Study!
Dr. Rutledge is an awesome teacher but expects you to know the material and understand it. Go to his office hours for help constantly and do extra credit every week. Homework takes a couple of hours but you have time to do it. Ask questions and the class will become easier. The final is extremely hard.
he is a great teacher
Took him during covid so it was online. Beginning he seemed nice and cool, but by week 10 he got more and more harsh. He gives barely any time for exams, and then gets mad at you when you ask for more time. He isn't very understanding, he's probably a better professor in person, but he doesn't understand we struggle more online.
Online during COVID Pros Cuves exams to make sure everyone has an opportunity for an A. Offers weekly extra credit assignments Will provide you with resources and help with your paper and if you turn it in early he will give you extra credit. Cons Will not take anything late. Will not believe any student excuses.
So, I had to drop out due to taking too many courses with Micro. Dr. Rutledge has a great sense of humor and will work with you. I hope to take him again in the Spring, but I took Micro with Phsyio and that wasn't a good choice. WAAAAAAAAAAY Too much work. Rutledge's work load is reasonable. The tests are a beast.
So, I do not like online classes. I heard how good this instructor is in the classroom and lab and feel that this course did not translate well to online. The instructor is rigid, but supportive. This I feel that this class would have been way better in person.
Was full of interesting knowledge and gave examples of topics we discussed in lecture. He made class fun and interesting, engaging with students with questions and facts. Fair grader on tests, accepted late work, encouraged group work. Very informative class, learned a lot.
The class is a lot of work. Most of it is easy, but the exam and the paper are hard. If you go to office hours Rutledge will help you on the paper and find research. Just do everything. Show up early to class, do all the extra credit, and every time there is an opportunity for extra points, take it. It will help.
The instructor accepts no excuses in the online format. Some students aren't able to handle that. If you put in the time, don't ask for exceptions, and aren't overly sensitive this instructor is for you! He addresses the material in a way you can understand and office hours are super helpful.
This class has a huge paper. Writing and researching aren't my best. I went to office hours each week and the instructor looked up research with me, provided me the links, explained it to me and really helped me out.
The late policy is rough! No late work, no exceptions! Use your calendar, communicate with him and don't procrastinate.
I had this class online, I don't like online classes. Rutledge did his best to give us a solid environment. He will help you if you go to office hours to talk through issues you may be having. You have to do the reading, but he does include a lot of homework questions on the tests.
I despise any biology classes with a burning passion, but loved Rutledge's class. If he could teach all of my science courses, that would be wonderful. Very passionate about what he teaches and is always willing to answer questions and help. Grading criteria was very clear. You'll laugh a lot if you enjoy sarcasm and stories. Start your paper early
I loved this class! Professor Rutledge makes microbiology so fun. The lectures aren't too long, he responds to emails during the weekdays pretty quick, and is understanding if you miss a lecture. He gives feedback before you turn in your final paper if you attend office hours as well. As long as you attend class and do the work, you will pass.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up for the class, but I'm glad that I was in this class. The professor is very helpful and engages with his students. He wants you to be successful and will help you in doing so. Best professor I've ever had do far in my college career!
Professor Rutledge was a great professor who kept the lectures/labs very entertaining. You have to attend each lab and lecture if you want want to pass with a decent grade but that is because of the nature of the class and not because of professor Rutledge. Would 100% take again and was glad to have taken his class.
Dr. Rutledge is the best teacher I've had in my college career by far. Not only is his teaching style applicable to everyone, but he makes learning such a tough subject fun. Keep in mind that there are a lot of tests, projects and labs; but all these factors made me learn so much more and better than any other course I've taken. I highly recommend.
He's the best teacher I have ever had and that's saying a lot since I have multiple degrees. He is hilarious lecturer and tests fairly. Easily the most bang for my buck in education ever.
i'm not sure where to begin. jared's exams had nothing to do with the resources provided. lecture would say one thing and the exam would ask something very different. practice tests were purposely made easy to throw students off and cause difficulty during exam. try your best to stay away from this professor.
The tests are challenging. Dr. Rutledge holds review sessions prior to most tests. This is a demanding class there are lots of projects and opportunities to get solid grade. The practice tests are reading tests and Dr. Rutledge pulls some of the questions off of the practice tests for the exams.
Great prof, 10/10 would recommend.
This class was difficult not due to Mr. Rutledge's teaching but the content was hard. Rutledge holds study sessions and reviews but it's still tough.
The class has a paper, unknown, lab quizzes and practice tests. Rutledge uses a small number of the practice test questions on the exams but the non practice test questions can be tough. He's surprisingly patient and goes over important items multiple times.
I had the 7 am lab. Oh boy, that was rough. Dr. Rutledge was accepting that some of us had a hard time getting up in the morning. It was never an issue if I was a few minutes late. It was great, I wish I could have taken it at a later time, but I still nailed an A. He was more than fair and really helps when there are issues.
I was very pushy to get into this micro because it was specifically taught by Dr. R! He was an AMAZING teacher and mentor. Micro is a HARD class but Dr. R is very knowledgeable and will work with you through it, just ask. I highly recommend Dr. R but just get ready to learn and put in the hours of effort for the grade you want and you'll succeed!
Dr. Rutledge is funny and easy going. Classes are kept light hearted and questions are always okay. Keep up on homework and studying and you'll fly through the class
Overall he is a great professor very passionate about what he teaches but his lecture are like 80 slides and he only goes deep into certain ones you gotta teach yourself the rest. He's a very funny guy but I wouldn't recommend him to my friends. I barely passed with a 70. DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT. I failed every exam but still passed.
He holds extra lab hours to help if you're having trouble. Lectures are 50-70 slides, very manageable. The tests are mostly lecture, so record the lectures. almost everyone who tries gets an A or B. If anyone gets lower than that they literally didn't try.
Dr. Rutledge is hands-down one of the best instructors I've had. He's hilarious, keeps lectures interesting, and explains complex topics clearly. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of it. He's available outside class and really cares if you succeed. His test questions make sense if you pay attention during lecture and review the slides.
The class was tough, but fair. You need to study and actually show up—Rutledge doesn't hand out grades, but he does offer extra credit, study sessions, and genuinely helpful feedback. Exams are hard but not impossible if you prep with the practice tests and lectures. Highly recommend if you're willing to put in the effort.
Dr. Rutledge made Micro interesting and approachable. The guy is a natural teacher—clear explanations, funny stories, and he wants you to succeed. He goes over tricky material multiple times and hosts reviews before exams. Take him if you can, but don't slack.
Absolutely worth taking! Dr. Rutledge mixes humor with high expectations. He offers reviews before tests, has very detailed slides, and even posts recordings. The unknown project was tough but super satisfying. Just do your part—show up, study, and participate.
While Rutledge is charismatic, his exams are hard and not an accurate representation of what he teaches. He lectures fast, the test averages are bad so he curves it, but even then the highest score was an 86% for one exam. Offers extra credit, and with other assignments its possible to get an A.
Dr. Rutledge's lectures are engaging and make complex microbiology concepts easy to understand. The labs are hands-on and fun, helping connect what we learn in lecture to real experiments.
Dr. Rutledge is an excellent professor who keeps students engaged with interesting discussions and well-structured labs. You can tell he wants students to really learn, not just memorize.
Bio 31 with Dr. Rutledge was one of my favorite classes. The lectures are energetic, the labs are fascinating, and even though the exams are tough, they're completely based on what we cover in class.
Rutledge's teaching style makes microbiology come alive. The lectures are detailed but engaging, and the labs are some of the most interesting I've done. The tests are hard but fair, and you always know exactly what to study
He makes microbiology exciting and easy to follow. His lectures are full of real-world examples, and the labs are some of the most engaging parts of the class.
Everything on the exams comes straight from lecture, and Dr. Rutledge even lists the exact slide numbers so you can see where you went wrong. It really helps with studying and improving.
The lectures are clear, organized, and surprisingly fun for a tough subject like microbiology. The labs are interesting and reinforce the material perfectly
One of the best instructors I've had. The course is demanding but fair, and Dr. Rutledge goes above and beyond to make sure students know exactly what's expected. He is not for everyone. Some in the class put in minimal effort and then complain when they don't get an A.
