I took this online speech class. I would recommend this to people who have a really hard time with standing in front of people. But if you are looking for help, you won't find much, just read the book and do the homework and you will pass.
Very tough and very anal about the assignments he gives. He also makes you write alot of reviews and even makes you work on a theatre set at the school. If you are looking to slack...then be careful. The funny thing is, you actually LEARN in this class.
I had him a few years ago. He was hardly ever there. Had an attitude, an easy B. You won't learn anything. He is bitter that he did not make the Queer as folk audition.
Essentially he is an anal retentive man who demands certain specificalities in your work. You learn nothing but he is an easy grade. Seems annoyed and angry and rather insecure, but as I said an easy grade.
Well I'm partial to him cause he once casted me. Absolutly the most beautiful man ever, if you can get past his fake evilness. Unfortunatly he doesn't allow alot of people to. Love him though.
Guy is as pompous as they come. Actually thinks that the class is: A.)meaningful & B.)exciting... Does not teach, only deligates & is not very clear on assignments or due dates. If you have 1/2 a brain you'll pass inspite of this guys shortcomings.
Great guy and fun to watch him talk with nothing but his hands waving around.
He flaps his hands a little too much. He teaches his points great and gives you alot of assignments for this class. He'll hate you in the begining but if you really get to know him he'll love you at the end. Good things...

WORST TEACHER EVER!
Doesn't like to be questioned on the topic or his teaching. Expects everyone to love theater but it's a GEN ED class so almost no one does. Pretty much a jerk and I've heard that from several other people as well.
Intro to cinema was a great class. He on the other hand was a bad professor. His arrogance turned me off from the first day but he's informative.

I took speech on-line with him, the class was REALLY easy but we all had a problem with the quizzes (couldn't access them) and we all e-mailed him and it took him almost a week to respond, actually doesn't respond to e-mails that well. Otherwise ok class
biggest jerk ever. My grandmother died, and I couldn't make a play he required...he could care less, told me "thats my problem, you have to go or you fail that essay" He is very rude. Takes forever to respond to e-mail. Dont take class.

He doesn't grade fairly, he is very unclear in his directions and criticizes everything you do. I have him for online intro to cinema and he treats it like it is NOT an intro class and that it is some major class and not just a general education class that no one has had before.
this is my last gen ed class and i am horrified by how rude,horrible this man is! He is always changing the website and now due dates. he is not clear on anything and expects you to live and breathe this class. He is not understanding and I strongly suggest you do NOT take this class!!

by far the worst professor in the world. he asks u to write a reaction paper to a play u go see. then gives u an F on the paper..because you didnt give the right reaction. how could he tell u ur reaction is not right?..its ur reaction!!!!!!!! he is the worst...worst ever. his class is meaningless.
i attempted taking his class last year and dropped it after the first class when you told the class we would fail our first few papers and have to work our way up. good job jerk off. retire and get lost.
he kills you with info as if you have any idea about films to begin with. he makes you write stupid papers on camera angles lighting techniques which will never be of any use.

You will learn critical thinking and how to write about it! He surely knows his stuff and is very generous to share all the extra info that we normanlly would not receive. You will learn the inside view of filmmaking!! Very exciting and informative. Give him a chance and he will do the same. :0)
OK Folks - I think there are some severe critics that did not get to know Prof. Saltzman and missed out on a great opportunity to increase their knowledge on Cinema. Can't you see that he is passionate about his class? Give him a break...he's great!! :0)
He seems like a jerk in the beginning, but you have to get to know him. He knows what he wants and he's willing to help. He's the type of guy that you need to confront if you're having a problem. Get personal with him! Be REAL with him! Show him that you care! He really is a good guy.
You have to earn his respect. He's a real jerk in the beginning mostly because he wants to weed out the idiots that don't do their work. Once everything is set, he's not that bad. His tests are very easy too! Just do the work. Expect to do a lot of writing though, so Id recommend you takeWRT101
Includes a lot of reading and papers.If you watch the films & read the text, you should pass the exams.He is a tough professor, but passionate about films.If you have trouble & visit in his office hours, he is more understanding!Truely not a bad guy, doesnt seem to have the best social skills though
Great class good discussions he definitly opens your eyes and eyes to world of cinema. Not a difficult class will boost GPA if you put some time and effort into it
Saltzman is by far the worst professor I has this past semester. You wont learn anything and there is a lot of work. He grades pretty hard and his test are crazy but at the end you will get a good grade. You will have to deal with his BS throughtout the semester but go to class and participate do all the papers and you will get a decent grade
Took both classes online. Easy grader, easy work. Recommend taking him if you need these classes; in cinema you just watch movies and you videtape your speeches for speech.

Prof. Saltzman is an amazing guy, his gruff exterior belies his kind heart. his grading is tough, but if you show effort and are willing to talk to him, he'ss give you a good grade. He has inspired me so much. Overall, he is a great professor.

Jared Saltzman is Awesome - try working and he'll respect you, looking foa an easy grade will only get you on anyone's bad side.
saltzman sucks....his lectures are boring...he isnt really prepared...and you write a lot of papers....the test are hard....this class is stupid....BUT....participate and you will pass anyways...jus answer questions in class and you will be fine.
Professor Saltzman is great - especially when you are not sure on how to wite a "Reaction Paper". If you show him effort, he not only helps you but inspires you to a greater level of thinking. He gets you "out of the box".
Class was average. Most movies were boring or dumb. Only 6 assignments, 2 tests + 1 pop quiz.
Jared is one of the most well educated proffesors on campus, his stage electrics class is the best class i ever took at BCC. He only makes the effort to go beyond teaching, if you make the effort to go beyond just taking notes and going to seched. class time...he has so much to teach, and you are lucky if you walk away with an 1/8 of what he knows!
In the classroom he's a no-nonsense guy who is up front and doesn't beat around the bush. He didn't waste time with students who didn't take the class seriously. He was available for help outside of class, but you had to make the effort to find him; he doesn't come to students, you have to approach him. One on one, he was very helpful.
I took this as an elective and most students who take this class for the same reason and he takes this so seriously as if were all gonna major in cinema you must know everything about cinema to get a decent grade he is truly ridicluous, Saltzman, u need a reality check . he trully sucks the worst proff. be prepared to be tested on total bullcrap
Stage Electrics. He is very clear when he speaks, but thats about it. This guy must have gotten electricuted one too many times. Highly intellegent but a little cooky. Socially uncomfortable to be around.

Within the first few days he and I got into an argument, thought I was screwed the rest of the class, you have to do extra work on the plays which hurts when you have a full time job, but I did all my work and showed up to class and still got an A. If you just do the work and not miss class he grades very fair.

I HaTE HIM..the wrost teacher ever. Doesn't do review for his test, unfair to students. Even if you tried in his class, its harder. Loves to talk, take everything seriously. Watch the crapest movies in class. just plan hate him, unfair to students again!

I think Professor Saltzman is a wonderful well-educated lecturer. He is tough and takes his lessons seriously but that is what I love about him and his classes. You have to earn your grade, not like some some other professors who doesn't give a rat's hoot and some lazy ass students who complains about everything.
Class was interesting. You have to show up, watch the movies, and do the assignments or you won't do well. He can come off as abrasive at first but give him a chance.

He makes you write papers alot however its not too hard to write. His tests were mutiple choice and hes pretty fair. Its not too hard but you have to show up to class for the movies.

You can tell he loves film and he is very passionate about it. This is not my major but I don't mind the class. You watch a movie than answer questions on it. Just make sure you study for the tests. He has 3 tests (fairly easy) 2 reaction papers and homework. Review sheets before every exam and study and you'll pass. But, my main criticism is that he is extremely rude. If you leave early on a screening day even if it is for a bathroom break you are NOT allowed to come back. I could go on, but take him if and only if you have to.
Likewise with previous review. Very rude! If he sees anyone with phone out he lowers grades. Treats all students like they are in HS. One student even asked to go to the bathroom since he was afraid what prof would do if he walked out. You stay after each exam you are not allowed to leave early. I could go on. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM.
I'm not sure I agree with previous comments entirely. It's as simple as comming to class, doing the required reading, watching the screening, Taking notes & studying everything presented in class. The papers are just as easy or hard as you make them be. He loves participation as it shows you are learning. Problem is people still act like kids in HS
I have taken online courses and the teachers are usually considerate and talk to you and understaand when you are having difficulties. This teacher is terrible with helping and understanding. Probably the worst online class I have ever taken and the worst teacher I have ever had to top it off. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Not worth it and will ruin your gpa.
The online version of this class is really straight-forward, and the professor gives everyone ample warning if they are not fulfilling the deadlines. Reading the textbook is the toughest part, but as long as you do and then log in and do the assignments on time (which are mostly only a paragraph - only 2 full essays), the class is a breeze.
If ur willing to teach urself film terminology then this class is for you. Watch films every wedn. And gets questioned. Is all about this teacher that made this class seem difficult
He is a pretty good guy but I personally didn't like the class. The movies didn't exactly interest me and taking it at 8am was an even bigger mistake. He's definitely a hard grader on homework and essays.
This professor is ridiculous. He grades 1 out of 5 if you get a 3 youre failing. A lot of work was put in the homework and he gives complete BS grading. Dont take this guy Im afraid of my grade at the end of the semester. Totally regretful of this. Absolutely absurd. Horrible horrible.
2 exams, weekly HW, a midterm, and a final. His grading fro the homework is probably the worst. Attendance is mandatory. He asks for a book but you really do not use it all. With no book the exams are easy if you study the flashcards he provides. Some movies you watch in class, you probably are going to fall asleep.
I took this class online so I was able to fit all the work in and watch the movies on my time and yes it was a lot of work for a humanities elective. That being said, this is college not highschool so you get out what you put in. Expectations are clearly defined. It is not an easy A, but if you keep track of due dates &do the work you will be fine.
Took him for an online cinema class. Instructions are clear, since it is an online class there are weekly forums you have to post on, and reply to classmates too. Quizzes are easy, however his papers are hard. If youre into movies, and dont mind writing about them. This class will be the one for you.
Overall very good professor, you watch a film every week and then the next class you discuss it and go over the answers to the homework. He really gets the whole class engaged in discussions. As long as you do the assignments and participate, you will do well in his class. There are 3 exams, not difficult and he specifies what will be on them.
Not a bad professor at all. Clearly passionate about what he teaches. Every Wednesday morning we watched a movie, then next class the following Monday we would discuss. Test content is clearly laid out. Homework is not difficult, but the papers are a little bit more challenging.

He knows what he's talking about, but you also NEED to. He grades in such a way that he's so particular it's very difficult to receive good grades. Don't take this course if you're looking for an easy class to boost your GPA. Exams are simple if you study. Homeworks and papers are very tough with the way he grades them. 21 years ago i took intro to cinema with this man and i swear on all taht is holy he made people wear a dunce cap and put them in the corner. If you spoke out of turn in class he would humiliate you, he would call you out infront of everybody. On several occasion procured a dunce cap and proceeded to sit the offender in a corner like a child.
Based on the syllabus, participation isn't listed as required and should not be counted as part of the grading criteria. I have completed all required quizzes, discussions, and written papers with high scores. Most of them are 90 or 100, and the rest were 85 or higher.
