WORST biology teacher ever does not know how to teach avoid him at all costs he does have office hours but they are not helpful at all.
I understand this guy is new to teaching but he is unclear. Not a single answer he gave had a black and white answer, especially test related. So far we are still blind on how we are suppose to study for the test. No review or study guide and pretty much says focus on lecture and what's in the book. So everything, and no class is like that.
Lectures are super unclear and you have almost no idea what will be on exams since he mostly just reads off of his poorly-organized powerpoint slides. Clicker questions during class go over information we have barely talked about and are used for a grade. Exams WILL be a guessing game.
Worst Professor in the world ! You have to come to class to do clicker questions which are a guessing game. Clicker questions cover questions we have never heard of or learned about. Exams are a guessing game as well. You can read and study all you want, you will probably still fail. His lectures are monotone and pointless. Do NOT take!
This class is absolutely UNREALISTICALLY difficult for an intro level pre-requisite biology course. The exam questions are unlike anything that is related to the lecture let alone anything in the textbook. The clicker questions are stupid and a guessing game as well as the exam. The exam avg. for the 1st exam was 58% which is insane. DO NOT TAKE
Worst class I've ever taken, so difficult. His exams are so hard and out of context that I'm discouraged to even attend class. I was expecting an A in this class but it's messing around with my GPA so much! Would not recommend!!!
Don't even know what to say. For an into class this is absolutely horrible. Don't know why a new teacher would be teaching such a huge class that is needed by so many people. He has such high expectations that are just beyond ridiculous. (Spending 5-6 hours reading 1 CH??)This class will determine if I get in my program or not. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP
This professor is making the exams at the same difficulty level of the MCAT, saying that it'll prepare us better and make us the top students in the country. I never knew i signed up for an MCAT prep class, wasnt in the course syllabus or description. Terrible teacher, tests divided into 3 sections and each question include 1 to 3 combined concepts
I know that the amount of work is out of our professors hands,(clicker points and online quizzes) as it is mandatory for all intro to micro bio classes. But, his lectures slides are almost word for word from the book. If I didn't understand it while reading it, well forget that lecture will even help. Exams are insane, I feel doomed even studying
He goes over a lot of topics per exam. The questions are really tough. The questions are about very specific details. He claims to be preparing us for the MCAT even though not all of us are planning on going to med school. If I didn't have the book and extra credit quizzes I probably would have failed.
Though his exams may be difficult and his lectures may be fast paced, you can tell that he wants the best for people. He has awesome curves on exams and extra credit. He also always encourages us to go to SI leaders and peer mentors. Over all, I think he challenges his students in a helpful way. Great micro teacher!
The tests are basically impossible. The way the questions are generated include none of the above or all of the above and it makes it very tricky. He wants to prepare us for the MCAT but last time I checked I didn't sign up an MCAT prep course. You have to teach yourself a lot of the info from the book or YouTube . If u don't read you're screwed
Dr. Schrader is a great professor. Despite this being his first time teaching the course, he is very well organized and above all he is understanding. It is clear that he is passionate about biology through his lectures. It is true that his tests are hard and you absolutely have to put in A LOT of effort. I would recommend him to future students!!
He tries, you can tell, but it's his first year; obviously, he's not amazing. He does care though, about the students and microbio. Still, the exams are crazy; they make me feel like I'm drowning. So much content is covered in depth, but the exams only have a couple of minute, somewhat random topics. The class is DIFFICULT & could be taught better.
The only way you can pass with an A, is if you. never mind you can't. Hard exams, curve didn't even help me. Jared is a very highly intellectual individual, but he fails to communicate with his students. Not the way to inspire minds into learning. All the material and concepts are tangling and overloaded. I just hope I pass
Loved this!
Dr. Schrader is a super nice guy and definitely knows his stuff, but when it comes to teaching it to others, he doesn't do a great job. He reads directly off slides expecting his students to know what he's talking about. His exams are extremely difficult. Be ready to put hours on end into this class. Read the book!
The exam questions are a variety of trick questions, meant to test your critical thinking, NOT the material in the course. Multiple questions require 0 knowledge on the topic, but rather whether or not you can find the twist in the question. I would run for your life if you see him on your class schedule. There are better microbio professors.
Dr. Schrader is a very good professor. He truly has a passion for biology and he wants his students to excel. Microbio is supposed to be a very challenging class so for all those students who are complaining .I truly do not understand why. There are clear guidelines on what the test will be on and there are MANY extra credit opportunities!
Level of difficulty of the exams does not compare to an introductory micro class. He says he makes the exams like questions you would find on the MCAT but doesn't realize not everyone in the class will be taking the MCAT. He doesn't know what introductory level is. At office hours he tries to explain content but can't get to the point so rambles.
He is honestly the WORST professor I have ever had. He seems to not care about his students' success. His tests are designed to make us fail. I regret wasting my money on this class. I'm just going to have to retake it. Hopefully Wayne will never let this guy teach again. DO NOT TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES. You will regret it big time.
Do I think Professor Schrader is by any means a bad person? No. Is he a bad teacher? Yes. I came into this class thinking I would get an A, as biology has always been my best subject, but I have never had a more terrible teacher. He never interacts with the class, and his voice is so low and monotonous that its nearly impossible to hear him.
This guy is all over the place with his lectures. They aren't well organized and when asked questions about the slides he sort of rambles in this monotonous voice and hopes you pretend to understand him, never gets to the point. Extremely challenging intro class, exams are a guessing game. Good luck, and do NOT skip the extra credit quizzes.
Loved this course
You need to put max effort into this class to get an A. Get all clicker points and do quizzes. Dr Schrader cares about his students. The tests are hard but were curved. The difficulty of tests make you question just what you know and don't know and this semester there were so many variables I didn't know what I was getting until the very end.
DO NOT take this class with this professor. The amount of information we have covered was horrendous and extreme. Also, his questions were more complex than the book or lecture could give us. How does that make sense? WAY to difficult for a 2000 level course. Not everybody is pre-med here! Acts like we are all microbiologists. Too time consuming.
Honestly this class was very difficult. But the best part about him was that he was willing to improve the way he taught this course. I hated this class at first but I enjoyed it towards the end. He is very caring and always there to help you, but you MUST put in the effort to get an A. It's not an easy course but it is POSSIBLE to get a good grade
Never again. The lab is worth 40% of the class, and the average for 400 students was an F for the lab portion. The lectures, he mumbles off the slides, not clear at all. He is dull and you can tell he doesn't want to be there. All his tests are conceptual. I didn't fail btw, but definitely have to retake because I need a better grade for med school
This class has been the hardest class i have ever taken, He is a very nice guy and everything, but he just throws stuff at you. for a 2000 level biology, an intro class, you should not go over the entire book with that much detail. he tries to prepare you for the MCAT, but he doesn't realize that not everyone in his class is taking the MCAT........
Would just like to announce the worst teacher I've ever had at Wayne. With no moral empathy, and no considerations. He attended class to teach and that is it. He didn't care for what people thought, even if both your first exams are below 40% averages. I express my opinion from a scholar's point of view, he did not consider anything. Don't Take.
Lab is known to be hard, and with his exams being SO hard it is literally impossible to do well. Save ur gpa and don't take a class with him Worst prof I've ever had at WSU
This class was definitely difficult but fair. The first two exams were the most difficult but he always curved the exams and he drops the lowest test grade. He did a survey asking how he could make the exams better and followed through on our requests. It's hard but still possible to get an A in this class you just have to put in a lot of effort.
Want a high grade? Do ALL the extra credit quizzes. SKIM the book chapters. Go to class. After class, take notes on ALL the lecture slides (he talks too fast to do this in class), listen to EchoCenter for details, & read your notes DAILY. DON'T get behind on the material. If you have 2200 with him, follow these steps & you *should* be fine.
I Started to hate Biology after taking this class...
This class was extremely difficult, that being said it is do-able. If you are a lazy student in the slightest, you WILL NOT make it through. This class is meant to weed out students who don't really want it bad enough. Dr Schrader was an awesome professor and he always tried his best to make lectures interesting. I would recommend him
Dr. Schrader really cares for his students. He taught upper bio classes, so he had higher expectations teaching an intro micro class. HOWEVER, he did change the difficulty of exams and made exam 3 and the final a lot more easier, so HE IS willing to change. He curved Exam 1 & 3 by 13% and Exam 2: 26%, an no other Micro teacher curves or gives 50 EC
Curse the gods for putting me in his class. Besides his absurd test questions, good luck asking him questions at his office hours. The man talks forever. I once went to him for one question and he didn't stop talking for half an hour...I ended up getting a parking ticket because I wasn't expecting to be there that long. BEWARE
I had the mistake, I mean opportunity to take schrader this semester for Microbiology. First off, he curves, ALOT. I managed to get a C- on every exam but with the curve I was at a B average in lecture. his problem is he makes the exams so hard that without a curve you would easily fail. This is the only biology class I truly hated.
No accent, mumbles sometimes. Read through all the lecture slides and explained the material well but his exam were difficult. The exam questions are very detailed and trickyish. 4 exams, 50 extra credit points, 50 clicker points, and cumulative final (31 chp)He is nice and curved each exam but not the final. Final exam Q's came from the 4 exams
Dr. Schrader is definitely a nice guy and cares about his students, but this class was extremely difficult. He did end up having to curve heavily or else everyone would have failed. The lab is already a lot of work, but on top of that I would be studying 3+ hour a day only to get a C after the curve on an exam. Gives 50pt of extra credit.
you will fail if you take his class. extremely hard and not a fair class. ruined my life and my GPA. get ready to study 9 chapters for just one exam. made this class way harder than it is supposed to be.
A pretty good professor. Lectures were a bit fast and sometimes hard to grasp, but his tests weren't too bad. Huge curves on the exams. He gave 50 extra credit points which really helped throughout the course of the semester.
Because lab is a grade killer, you NEED to do well in lecture since both portions are combined into one grade. He DOES give a lot of EC so do ALL of it (it's pretty easy) & take VERY detailed notes. His exams are VERY difficult, & while he DOES curve, DON'T depend on that. Study the lecture slides HEAVILY, memorize all diagrams, and SKIM the book.
Save your GPA and stay away from him. I busted my behind off and now I have to retake it again because I failed it and he is the ONLY one teaching it this semester.
Save your GPA, and save yourself chronic headaches. The tests are ridiculous, the curves are okay. If you can take it with Thomas, you might be fine. If you have the misfortune of taking this class, go with Becky for the lab section. She's great. I think he's smart and a nice guy, but this is already a hard topic. He just wants to make it harder.
SAVE YOUR GPA AND DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! This class is not designed to be an easy course but he just makes it unnecessarily difficult. I have gotten all A's in my science classes now my GPA is at risk because I decided to take him. He does not explain material well and puts things on the test that he did not discuss in class. Avoid at all cost!!
Let me put it this way: a 2.1 is too high a score on this website for this guy. Do give this guy your money. You're just gonna spend more because you'll end up retaking it.
He is an extremely difficult teacher. I am currently in his micro class and his tests are brutal. However, he has a great interest in what he teaches and wants everyone to do well. He also offers up to 5% extra credit to your total grade. Only take micro with him if you are willing to study every day.
hes a good teacher, and has good intentions. His exams are not that difficult, however you do need to understand everything not just memorize. I studied the slides only and did very well on all his exams. I didn't even buy the book. GIVES A LOT OF EXTRA CREDIT.
If you plan on taking this class only once, do not take Schrader's class. His main goal is to fail you. He gives iclicker points during class on material you haven't covered yet and he makes the questions tricky. Extremely hard tests. Only good thing are his extra credit quizzes. Definitely do not recommend.
He's really not bad if you have good work ethic. I didn't have great work ethic before I took him, but I worked my ass off and I'm going to come out of this with a very solid A (knock on wood). He gives a LOT of extra credit that is relevant and helps you learn. Lectures are a bit monotone but he tries.
Okay so he's a nice guy, but that doesn't mean he's a good professor. Just reads off the slides in lecture, and the exams are some of the hardest I've ever taken. Spending 20+ hours studying before the exam was the only way to pass, and even then I still got a B. Avoid taking if possible.
Horrible.
Teachers are part of your grade no matter what anyone says since they write the exams. His exams are horrible. You have to work your ass off regardless, but this is just absurd. If I could give him a lower score I would.
Micro is hard no matter the teacher. People who rated him harsh were looking for an easy A. He's clear about what's going to be on the test, tells specifically how many questions from each chapter & gives a study guide review session. If the class does bad on an exam he makes the next one easier, adds extra credit & reuses old clicker questions.
Hardest professor I have taken by far, exam questions are based on what he believes the answer are, even if the textbook directly conflicts with what he says. You have to think like him to even figure out any of the questions. Do not take him
Terrible professor. His exams are insane, ESPECIALLY the second & third exams. He is very vague when it comes to what will be on the exams & when you ask him the best way to pass, he says to memorize the book. He's incredibly pretentious & rude; I don't feel comfortable asking questions in class OR online. Take it with a different professor.
I have never ever struggled so much in a class. I put in hours of work and am lucky if I come out with a B on a test. He seems like a pretty smart guy, but isn't too concerned with his students learning... or passing. I haven't taken the final yet, but I'm pretty sure I am going to have to re take this class :(
Actually a very decent teacher. Though his exams can be quite challenging, I have to say he is one of the better biology professors at Wayne State. His lectures are informative and the PowerPoint are godsend! Even if you don't attend lecture, keeping up with the PowerPoint should help a lot! Overall, not a bad prof!
Overall, he is a good professor. The 50 points of extra credit offered can really help out your overall grade. His exams are tough but you can tell that he wants his students to succeed. Study EVERYTHING on his PowerPoints and you will be fine.
Lectures can be dry and his exams are quite difficult, but he gives 50 points of easy to earn extra credit that can save your grade. He is knowledgeable about the material and his lecture slides are full of everything you need to know. This course requires excessive and oppressive studying that will make life terrible, but its not the profs fault.
The extra credit helps a lot, not gonna lie. However, there are major inconsistencies in the slides. He isn't that helpful in review material for the exams. Honestly, you might be better off taking another professor. I don't get the positive reviews at all, they're probably from the few kids who got A's on the exams. On the whole, don't take him.
If you like putting in a ton of work for little reward, I'd say go ahead. This class could easily ruin your GPA because it is 5 credits. He's smart, but he's not a good lecturer and will do the bare minimum to help you out. 50 points of extra credit are great, but I've learned more from Youtube and Wiki than him and the book.
I got an A in this class, but I studied intensely to get it. He only read the slides in lecture so self learning and studying from videos on Youtube were big parts. His exams are poorly worded so I had to think the way he thought in order to get good grades. Knowing the concepts is not enough, he wants students to understand them thoroughly.
I got an A on the exam, and all I studying was the lecture notes. He is hard, but if you listen to his lectures like 1000 times, and know everything, you will do ok.
You literally need to know everything and understand everything like the back of your hand in detail. I'd suggest understanding the course material before even taking the class. It's not very "intro" like. Don't even take the class at WSU IMHO.
If you study everything on the slides you will do good on the exams. His test questions come from the slides. Read the book only if you don't understand something in lecture. This class really makes you work for an A but it is definitely possible. Lab will help your grade if you study hard. The extra credit boosts your grade a good 5%. Don't stress
Had to really work for my grade. Memorize + understand his power points (very long), and you'll do fine. His extra credit is helpful. He curves to the second highest grade, and you can contest exam questions (low success rate, but worth a try). Nice guy that wants you to do well. Easiest lab is with Rebecca Jackson, or this TA named George.
This class is hard. If you take him, make sure to read the book. Memorize all the mechanisms. His slides and lecture were alright, but honestly it's all self-studying. He gives a good amount of extra credit, so do it all. Lab is easier, so it'll bring your grade up. Just read the book and write your own notes, and you'll be fine! And he curves too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I took him last fall. His exams are designed to where they are comprehensive MCAT style questions. You have to know everything inside and out. He reads off the slides. Half of my class failed. TAKE ANYONE ELSE.
One of the best professors ive had for bio. You learn how to study in college with this class. I took it first semester of college and I did fine. If youre trying to go into Medicine, you want to take this class, so that you learn how to study.
1. Gives good feedback? He gives virtually no feedback 2. Participation matters? Not really since he rarely pauses to answer questions 3. Accessible outside of class? No b/c he takes 45 min with 1 student. 4. Caring. No, he knows his students are clueless and does nothing to help them 5. Lecture heavy? He reads from his slides. Stay. Away.
Quite possibly the worst instructor on campus. Was very rude to students. Also, literally said "Post questions in the discussion board" and then when someone gave helpful responses, gave everyone no credit for the quiz. The quiz had incorrect answers and instead of owning up to his mistake, he punished the whole class. Stay. Away.
Do not take this class. I'm going to save you your time and money by not taking this class with Professor Schrader. He makes his exams impossible to pass. If the class average for every exam is a low D, then clearly you are doing something wrong. He needs to be on probation again. Overall, just don't take microbiology with him.
WORST BIOLOGY PROFESSOR AT WAYNE STATE DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! It is impossible to learn all the material he teaches in two weeks. NO matter how much or long I study I still get highest C on the exam. He barely curves and he goes sooo fast that I cant even read the first sentence on the slide. I never know what he is saying during lecture, AVOID
I never hated a professor before but I think I actually hate this professor. This class is a waste of money, time, ruins your life, and GPA. anyone who gets an A in this class is most likely ONLY taking this class. It is unbelievable for the amount of information he gives us to remember. I cannot even remember one chapter, yet 8 chapters on a exam
this class made me switch my major and not do dentistry anymore.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Ever. I have never studied and put so much of my time into studying to subsequently fail each test even when I implemented different strategies each time. I have never had such a horrible professor who does not prepare students at all for his exam questions that are aimed to make students fail.
Not a great professor. Do not take.
I wouldn't say the worst, but def in top 3 worst professors I have ever taken. There is no way to really avoid him if you need BIO 2200. He does slightly curve exams and gives like 2 extra credit points on exams. He gives extra credit quizzes due before class and weekly quizzes (50pts). don't wait until the last minute to study, you'll regret it.
Lab is very hard. You will study for hours and still do bad on his unnecessarily hard exams. He gives 50 points extra credit but it honestly hardly helps when you fail every exam. Try to avoid.
He's too fast when lecturing and doesn't give a direct answer when you ask him a question. The exams are brutal because of how tricky they are. you have to read them CAREFULLY before choosing an answer. The test averages are pretty bad and but he curves it to the second highest score. Avoid him if you can.
HE'S THE GOAT
Hard professor. Dont take.
Dr. Jared Schrader was an awesome prof. Disregard all the negative reviews, as they were left by students who wanted A's but put in C level work. Old exams will not help. Dr. Schrader is smart and doesn't reuse Q's. Pre-read and don't memorize everything, learn concepts. DO pay attention in lecture, and do practice exams!! EC is very important!!!
Go to class and do every single extra credit question possible. He's tough but getting an A isn't impossible, especially if you really do well in lab. Studying the day before or even the weekend before isn't a good idea. If you really put in the effort, you can do it. His questions are questionable and he rarely hears you out but again, it's doable
Get ready to read and learn every fine line in the textbook. Lecture Clicker Points are graded, DO THE EC HOMEWORK OFFERED IT HELPS BOOST YOUR GRADE!! Exam questions styled on reading comprehension and connection to anything in the chapters. Manage your time and get ready to study every single day. That is not exaggerated. DO YOUR BEST IN LAB!!!!
This class requires a lot of hard work. However , out of the professors that teach this class Schrader is probably your best option because he provides a ton of extra credit and his exams arent impossible. The best way to study is honestly looking over his power points and his echo lectures. I wouldnt rely too heavily on the book.
Schrader is honestly the worst professor I have ever taken. I managed to get an A just because I read all the chapters in the book which was very time consuming and annoying. His lectures were useless besides the couple things he would mention about the test. Only good thing about his class is his 50 point extracredit and curves on each test.
Awful professor. He moves through concepts too fast and his exams are extremely hard. Definitely would have failed if it wasn't for the extra credit
This class relatively challenging ,due to the fast pace and content . However the professor covers the content that is tested on . I referred almost only to the slides and received 2 100s on tests. He offers plenty of extra credit to offset the difficulty of the course.
Everyone complains about his class. I got an A and although it was difficult, everything that was on the exam was on his slides. Don't buy the book. Take the lab with Sudeshna. Also he gives like 50 EC points.
Prof. Schrader forgets that we are not all microbiologists like him and that this is an intro class. His tests are very very veryyy detail specific. You won't pass unless you have memorized every single detail on the slides. Plus the questions are never based on memorization they are very crtitical and need processing. Hardest science class ever.
This class was unnecessarily hard, I have never done so horribly in a class EVER. Read the book extremely close and pay attention during lecture. Schrader doesnt hear anyone out and will NOT round your grade at all. Not even .1% . Take Muntasir as a lab TA he is great! Do good in lab and dont fail every test and you might pass?
Have you ever wanted to play the popular game minute to win it? Take his class! Except instead of fun challenges its difficult questions, and instead of a cash prize you get to fail a course :) seriously though he made 50 question exams 60 minutes. He said if that wasnt enough time to get SDS. homie gave me the anxiety in order to qualify for SDS.
Course is only based on exams that are open note. The powerpoint slides had just about all of the material needed for the exam, but there were a lot of chapters covered on each exam (don't get behind), and hundreds of slides. There was no extra credit and no curves, so if you are not a good test taker this class may be overly challenging.
One of the most chill professors I've seen. He gave open-note exams with averages around 85% and people are upset because he didn't curve. His lectures were super informative and he tells you what to focus on and gives a bunch of exam prep questions during lectures and practice exams before his actual exams. One of the most accommodating professors
People are just big babies. If you went to lecture and paid attention to what he said, you would've done fine on his exams. Too many people tried to cram the slides at the last minute and they're upset cause they didn't get an A. They kept crying for him to curve even though the average was like an 80. His exams have 50 straightforward questions.
People would get a freebie true/false question wrong about the mitochondria being the powerhouse of the cell and they'd ducking complain.
