This class is way too hard for a gen ed. You have so much homework that takes a long time and it barely counts in the class but if you don't do it your grade drops so low. When you do do it, your grade doesn't go up. You have to study really hard for the tests and the average is usually a B-. If you're bad at science and math, avoid at all costs.
Took this as an easy gen ed to finish my senior year at JMU, and made me regret choosing this professor. Thought he'd be easy, the first couple days of class he was chill and engaging. Not long after that did I realize that he was useless as a teacher. Realized I was better off teaching myself since all he did was read off the powerpoints.
His lectures are extremely boring and uninformative. He was not good at explaining anything and he even didn't know how to do heat of combustion problems. He did offer extra credit assignments but they were always on Saturdays and for the entirety of the day. He offered one on ESPN college Gameday, which he expected people to go to.
Yes, the class was boring, but the online homework was an easy 100 because you can take it as many times as you need to get a 100 plus at the end of one attempt, it gives you the correct answers. The tests aren't bad if you go to the review sessions with the TA beforehand. I am a senior and trust me, there are worse professors out there.
The class is not that bad, no attendance policy, online homeworks every week but they're not too hard and boost your grade. Could be better but it is honestly a fine class and a survivable gen-ed.
Seems like a nice guy but it's a weird class. His lectures have nothing to do with the actual work. Lots of homework but he does give extra credit. Wouldn't recommend if you aren't good at math.
Dr. Stoltzfus is a saint. Taking his class has made me a better person. This class was interesting, online homework for every class, and weekly lab that you will need to drag yourself to. This class was a delight, you will be enlightened. Stoltzfus is a fair grader, such a nice caring individual, and a great choice as a prof for 112.
Awesome guy, ok teacher. Classes are pretty dull but attendance isn't mandatory. If you have a decent STEM background, it should be pretty easy.
Dr. Stoltzfus is an interesting professor. He is passionate about the majority of the information in this class so the discussions in class are very engaging. How much you enjoy the class will depend on how you feel about chemistry and biology. There is math involved but as long as you ask him Dr. Stoltzfus will help out as much as he can.
I have my first test in ISAT 100 tomorrow and everything we have learned in lecture is barely on this test. Majority of the test will be on the book even though he did not assign us to read the book at all. I emailed him for help last night and he still has not responded. Don't take him
Jared is good. The class is interesting but there's some math. You can tell he loves being a prof and there are so many assignments that if you don't do well on the tests, you can get a good grade. The tests aren't difficult, but you need to review notes and powerpoints, attendance isn't huge either.
The most frustrating professor I have ever had for a Gen-Ed. He is inconsistent with his due dates, his lecture is all over the place, and he gives too much work for a Gen-Ed. He does not explain the math we do, and he does pointless activities when we could be reviewing confusing objects in the chapter.
This class was pretty hard in that I didn't realize it was a chem/bio class. The class did really poorly on the first test, but it got better throughout the semester. He's super passionate and knowledgable on the topic, and I would take him again anytime. The professor is awesome, but the class is moderately difficult. The labs were super easy tho!
Worst class & worst professor I've ever had. Way too much work for a GenEd. I think he forgets that not everyone is an ISAT major & doesn't care as much as he does. Super political & closeminded. Dropped a huge group project on us at the end of the semester that wasn't even on the syllabus. Avoid this professor at all costs!!
Dont take this class. In lectures the only thing you learn is that climate change is bad, but the exams are complicated chemistry and very specific textbook questions that only an ISAT major could decipher. He never goes over math problems in class and expects you to know everything by the TAs math review session which is not helpful at all.
He is a super chill teacher and really cares about his students. He always is open to questions and discussions. Office hours are really easy to go to and he doesnt make you feel nervous or anything to talk to him. Overall a really good professor that cares a lot about his students, and shows it too.
He is great, cares about his students SO MUCH. Lectures are boring, attendance is not required, most of the homework is online and you can get a 100 on all of them (unlimited tries). Tests are difficult, but if you study you'll be fine. He is a great professor, please take him if you can. If you took a chem or bio class already you'll be fine.
A great professor who actually cares about his students. He often asks us how we're doing mentally and what he can do to make class less stressful for us. He always explains everything well with relevant examples, and tries to answer all of our questions, even in larger classes. Act like an adult and he will be very kind and accommodating in return
Great teacher who cares about his students.
The class and Professor both are great!!!
Awesome guy who really cares about his students and others.
He's pretty awesome. I have him for an online class due to Covid and he always shows us his dog at the end of class.
Great prof and his class was chill. He just wants to teach. He seems enthusiastic and always answers questions. Definitely go to review sessions
Great professor and his class was chill. He just wants to teach. He seems enthusiastic and always answers questions. Gets a little off topic at times but he has good intentions. He is a caring professor and cares about your well being. Show up for participation points. Good class online and I would assume he would be good in person too. Easy A.
He's really cool and teaches well in a way that's easily understood. He is very interactive with the class and very likable.
I love this man. I have him for ISAT 160 right now and he is amazing. He always makes the TopHat lectures super interesting and he is absolutely amazing. When he is teaching, you can really tell he knows a lot about the information and cares about his student's opinions and ideas regarding it.
He's super fun. I could be on my phone all class and just take notes on slides and easily pass. He shows us his dog at the end of class and sometimes his kids come in.
He was an amazing professor, especially during this whole online learning pandemic situation. I enjoyed his lectures, although most of them felt off-topic on sustainability, rather than critical thinking. He's a really nice guy and I loved taking his course, although I didn't learn much.
Jared was my favorite professor this semester. He is very engaging during class and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. He gives opportunities for participation credit during class and homework assignments are easy for the most part. Your grade is mostly made up of the midterm, final, and a group project. 10/10 would take again.
He can not control the class. Online class is set up through top hat which is similar to twitch and people act like it. He talks about really heavy topics and doesn't have any ground rules. He waves off racists/sexist/bad comments and just tells us to play nice. He has no place talking about those topics while not being able to control the class.
Jared is chill, he really cares about his students and wants everyone to be happy which can get a little problematic during debates. People put him in uncomfortable positions and he handles it as best he can. If you're online penny time (his puppy) will be the highlight of your week. Fairly easy class but make sure you have friends to do stuff with
Dr. Stoltzfus has been my favorite professor at JMU so far. His lectures are very interesting and he cares about every single one of his students, even in a class of 300 people. He is very passionate about human rights issues and how that applies to the course. A lot of the bad reviews are from people who call him biased just for stating facts.
Professor Stoltzfus was by far my worst professor freshman year. It's like he's hosting a talk show about the most random topics and not really what's gonna be material you need to know. He is highly opinionated and has no control over the chat which is also very distracting. I tried to let him know how distracting it was and he brushed it off.
He's a really awesome prof. Very easy class. I had him online and he used Tophat, and it's like Twitch. He brings up controversial topics in the class, so if you're one of those people that likes to get heated when discussing these topics and will argue with others to the point it gets nasty, please don't take this class. People don't need that.
really nice guy! the class was fairly easy just power points and lectures. he tries to make the class engaging with open discussion with is really fun
Homework due before every class. Takes attendance through canvas quizzes based on the lecture. Loves to talk. Tests are a little difficult but the quizzes and homework are easy. Wouldn't take again just because I couldn't stay entertained during the lectures because he loves to talk about one topic for ages
Overall, he is a very nice guy. The course itself is very straight forward but he talks a lot. The class was pretty boring content wise but just do the work and you'll be fine. He doesn't grade super hard and The tests are open book so.
I really loved having Professor Stoltzfus and his class was very easy. He really does care about his students and he's extremely passionate about what he does. His tests are also open note and there aren't a ton of assignments.
A lot of people thought Dr. Stoltzfus was boring, but I was actually inspired by the stories he told and how much he dedicated his life to his career. You can tell that he loves teaching, and people take advantage of him because they know he will bend over backwards for his kids. There is a group project and exams, but nothing too stressful.
This class was kind of boring, and although Stoltzfus is very passionate I wouldnt take this class again. There were daily attendance quizzes, but the Powerpoints are posted on Canvas. Tests are open note, but some questions can be kind of opinionated. There was also a really big final group project paper that was a lot of work.
Incredibly boring and opinionated class. Every class is a large lecture and he does a bad job of keeping the class engaged and interested. I took this class expecting to learn how to solve complex problems but instead was forced to learn about all his personal views and ideas surrounding solely politics. Would not recommend to anyone.
Though lectures can be boring, the class as a whole is an easy A. Tests are all async and open note, and all questions can be answered with his PowerPoints. Read ? carefully tho bc they can trip you up. There's 2 hw/week and 1 group project that's straightforward and easy and you pick group members. He's very passionate and offers extra credit
This class is pretty easy. The exams are open book and he posts the lectures with lecture notes online. I stopped going halfway through the semester and still ended with an 89. Lectures can be a little dry at points but towards the end of the year, there is really interesting topics covered. Gives extra credit and not a super hard grader.
This class is supposed to be about critical thinking and logical reasoning, but if you don't want to hear a very one-sided political discussion for almost every lecture, I would recommend somebody else. I used this class time primarily to work on other classwork or set a new PR in solitaire.
The class was taught from a very one sided political perspective and did not focus on problem solving or allow for much critical thinking. Lectures are not very engaging, powerpoints are posted and tests are open notes.
Probably easiest class you can take for critical thinking, but the class itself sucks. I can't name one thing I've learned, the homework assignments are easy but ridiculous, and the one sided political lectures are not engaging whatsoever. I still recommend taking it because its so easy and if you get bored during the lecture just dip.
Prof Stolzfus is great! You don't really learn too much in the class but as long as you pay attention you'll be fine. Your grade is made up by quizes and a few tests which are all online and asynchronous, a few homework assignments a week, and a final.
easiest class ever. hes a very cool guy, lectures are very boring but didnt go for half the sem and still passed with a good grade. One final group project but its with like 6 people so its easy. Lots of homework but the homework takes less then 15 mins. Would def recommend if you need an easy GenEd for cluster 1!!
Good guys, lectures are really boring but its all basic info. Lots of reading quizzes and homework where you read these long journals about like grass and dirt, tests and really hard if you do not go to class. Iwould say it common not so common material like all the answers could be correct if you think for too long. Easy class overall
Stoltzfus is very caring and has done some very cool things, but this class is way too hard for a gened. Exams are impossible but the group project is pretty easy. Attendance questions every class and some random easy hw assignments. He is all about sustainability so if you are into that take him, he is very inspirational.
He is such an understanding prof & gave many mental health days. There are attendance quizzes for every class so you either have to go or have someone send it to you unless you want to guess. Super easy class, maybe 2 homework a week & a group project. 2 exams, and a "final" all online & open note. I would def reccomend.
Tests are really confusing even though they are online and open note. barley anyone showed up to class even though there is an attendance question everyday. Lectures can be super boring, but gives extra credit. Was hoping for an easy A, but it is a easy B
absolutely hated this class. lectures and powerpoints made no sense and the tests were hard af. you couldn't find any of the answers in the notes. only nice thing was the group projects bc they were the only chance to bring up your grade
Few professors are as passionate about their work as Stoltzfus. Even fewer professors can manage to convey the information in a way that is approachable like Stoltzfus does. Most classes that are this easy I walk away feeling like I have learned nothing, but that was not the case with this class.
He's a really nice guy but this class is so boring! His tests are all online and open note but the questions are nothing like what he goes over in class. He gives a lot of busy work which is easy, but annoying to do, as well as extra credit. I would only recommend this class if you are genuinely interested in the topic.
This class was easy to keep up with and tests were fairly easy (open note and online). Sometimes you'll see questions that aren't related to lectures or come across questions that have 2 possible answers. There's a group project, but it's not bad at all just choose your group wisely. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Stoltzfus is a nice guy but he gives way too much work for a general education class! I was wanting to go into this class to learn more about the earth and environment but with all the work he gives (aka smart book assignments) I was bored to death and could hardly focus. Other than that the class is good for the most part.
He is a nice guy and the class really is not hard if you put in a little work and complete all of the busy work assignments. An A in his class is a 90 and above and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. The tests are a little tricky but if you go to class it will help. Tests are only 40% of your grade.
Lots of busy work, not necessarily hard but takes a lot of time. Tests are open book + online but you will still need to study. Go to class!! Or at least keep up with material. Exams are pretty difficult but he did offer a retake for one & there were some extra credit opportunities (DO THEM). Not the best choice for a gen ed if you want an easy A.
Usually assigned a short homework assignment every class. Lots of opportunities for extra credit, and the tests, while open note, are significantly easier if you show up to class. There are also a lot of in-class assignments that are collected for credit. Seems to be new this semester but there was a group project done over the semester.
Super nice guy who is genuinely really passionate about what he teaches. A pretty easy A. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but not going often definitely made the class and exams way more of a struggle than it had to be, and there are sometimes participation points.
Professor Stolzfus is amazing! He is so passionate about his material and very personable. His tests were infrequent, but the questions are often written poorly/confusing. The lectures were easy to follow and understand and I would definitely take the class again. There are barely any necessary readings.
i loved dr stoltzfus! he was a super cool guy and while lectures were boring he was really kind! a majority of the homework, quizzes, and assignments are online and asynchronous which makes it much easier and much less stressful. the tests are also online and asynchronous but they are also open notes, despite this they were somewhat difficult.
Stoltzfus is a genuinely nice guy and passionate about what he teaches. I also found the lectures to be interesting. However, there is way too much homework and the difficulty for both the homework and exams are beyond what I feel is necessary for a gened, even with the exams being open note.
Its mostly a lecture class, but there are some participation parts. Hes a really nice guy and kinda funny.
Super nice guy, attendance wasn't mandatory but there were random in-class participation activities that would mess with your grade if you missed too many. Lectures were kind of boring if you weren't interested in the subject but he did his best to make it appeal to everyone. Tests were difficult but online and you had a lot of time to do them.
He is super chill but be ready to be extremely bored. He teaches lots of common sense information and you will fall asleep. The exams are weirdly difficult though. You HAVE TO go to class cause there are in-class assignments. The group project is lengthy but not too difficult. It isn't a bad GenEd but there is lots of homework and class is awful.
His class is very easy. If you go to class and do all the homework you will get an A. It was very easy. The exams are kind of difficult but exams themselves are not worth a lot of your grade. Take him.
As a non-isat major the class was very hit or miss. The tests often didn't align with the material, but he's a really nice guy. went to talk to him privately after class, and he promised to help me through the semester and let me turn in makeup work for extra credit.
Tests are opinion based so it's very hard to guess the answer he wants and get a good grade. Grades aren't very test-heavy tho so easy to do well.
If I knew this class would involve as much math as it did, I wouldn't have taken it. Took this class because it sounded interesting - nope. Lots of math, a homework assignment due every class, and exams where half the material was never taught. This gened class was more work than all of my major classes combined which is ridiculous.
Stoltzfus is very passionate about what he teaches and had interesting lectures. He doesn't take attendance, but does do a lot of "attendance check" assignments in class that will hurt your grade if you miss a lot of them. The exams are pretty hard but do not make up a super significant part of your grade. He is accommodating if you need anything.
Professor Stoltzfus is very nice and very passionate about it studies. There is little to no homework. A few group projects, which are not difficult at all. The tests are completely opinion based and it is very difficult to do well on them all unless you know which option he thinks is better. Overall he is such a nice professor.
Dr. Stoltzfus is a really good professor who cares a lot about the course he teaches. There are a lot of homework assignments but they are all very easy/manageable. Exams are online and at home. I am not an ISAT major but feel like I got a lot out of this class.
Lots of work for a gen-ed class, but overall pretty straightforward. Dr. Stoltzfus is accommodating and clearly very passionate about the things he teaches. Grading criteria is often confusing/opinion based. Take extra care to find a good group for the major project towards the end of the year.
He's an amazing professor but the class itself is difficult. He is caring and funny and I would take every class with him because he's such a great professor and person. Always available and tries to connect with all of his students. Attendance is not mandatory and lots of the grades are from labs, shortbook assignments, and worksheets.
Definitely recommend. He is very passionate and really wants all of his students to succeed. This class is pretty homework-heavy but is easily manageable and all exams are online and at home. Definitely recommend him if you're taking him for a gen ed
Honestly a majority of work is from an online textbook and you can't complete it until you have a 100, labs are decently easy but you can't miss them. Lectures are fun and very helpful for exams (although attendance isn't mandatory), some are online but final was in person. Overall a great teacher and would recommend, you get out what you put in!
He's okay. He's not the best, but he is not that interesting. Really boring. Attendance is very important.
this is by far the most boring prof I've ever had. i fall asleep EVERY class and not because i'm tired but he just drones on and on. if he finishes early he chooses to continue talking instead of letting us out early. he does random in class assignments which count for attendance so make sure you go to class.
He is a super amazing guy and you only get graded on a few things, which are homework and random in-class assignments. The exams are online and there are no tests. It is kind of boring but he shares a ton of his actual experiences, for example (ex. he lived with a host family), which are cool. Notes aren't required. Overall, great guy and class.
He is a very interesting and likeable guy; however, his lectures can be uninteresting if you aren't particularly intrested in climate change or the environment. Attendance isn't taken every class, but there are in-class assignments that happen randomly, which will hurt your grade if you miss them. He offers lots of extra credit, though!
Very nice Prof, lectures every single class and I have def fallen asleep before. Random in person assignments that are graded and count for attendance so you should go to class, even though I didn't. Exams are online and out of class and NOT lockdown browser... Lots of homework but its normally easy.
The class is pretty easy. There are 3 exams that are all open note and take home. There are in class assignments that are graded as attendance so it's important that you go to class. Also, the course description does not properly describe this course—it's really just an environmentalism class. The lectures can be quite boring.
Super easy class. Lectures were kind of boring but tests are online, open note. If you have questions about anything, even if they don't have anything to do with the class, he is acessible. Very nice and cool person. He is very dad core. Class was very environmentally focused. I loved taking it with GEOL115.
