Reasonably helpful and quick to respond to emails. Very good lecturer, well-prepared and interesting to listen to. Overall, concepts are taught mainly by engaging students in activities. This is effective, but also means you must be awake each class.
Probably not the best professor to go to if you have questions. He's not very patient with students, and usually gives bogus answers (example: "it just does" - pretty much his answer to everything.) On the plus side, his lectures are very entertaining and he's good-looking
Dr. Taylor is a bit confusing... but he is quite a passionate instructor. You can definately tell that he loves to teach, though he should improve his clarity when answering questions, and attempt to explain answers instead of just telling students to re-read the text.
Fairly knowledgeable, he answers around 5+ questions per class and more on the online discussion board/in person - fairly helpful. Seems to teach very quickly and therefore sometimes things aren't clear, nor is there enough time to copy everything down on the overhead slides. Overall a good prof but his ego is sometimes very evident.
a VERY good professor. He's VERY patient with you and he's very clear. If you don't understand concepts/anything, go to his office hours and he'll explain everything to you. He's very funny and he loves his bio. Get him, and you won't regret it.
He's fun, talks about his girlfriend in the beginning of the class... makes jokes, and doesn't stress with terminology, makes everything easier
An awesome prof! he's very entertaining and loves to teach! he's always prepared and goes everything step by step if you don't get it-just go to his office hours. OH yeah, his funny comments about is gf will ALWAYS make you awake in class!
Great prof, he showed my meme in class!
Best professor for Biology. He doesn't teach often, but when he does, DEFINITELY TAKE THE course. He teaches really really well, and the highest class average out of all the sections reflect that. He's humourous and keeps the course interesting for everyone. He tells us what he expects from us, and hard-work will lead to great marks in his class.
Half hour classes are the way to go.
Totally awesome prof, absolutely loved this class. He started off most classes with jokes and made the material really understandable and relatable. Definitely take his class.
Best prof ever, take his class. Biology 112 is a hard course, but he does his best by making the boring information interesting. Makes things crystal-clear.
Taylor is a funny professor. however his very lazy and does not want to go through material in class. the course itself is very hard, therefor if you want to do well avoid this teacher.
To be concise, he makes boring stuff interesting. Definitely recommend people who do not enjoy biol as much but have to take biol to take his class!
He is super helpful, he brushes upon all material so you get an idea but you gotta study yourself so if you're the kind of person that needs lots of explaining for everything it is not the class for you, but he is super helpful in his office hours and emails.
Hilarious prof! Loved his stories and jokes--easily my favourite prof for first year. He makes sure the class understands the material before moving forward and tries his best to answer questions.
Amazing teacher was able to combine fun and learning very well in this course
Jared is an amazing prof! Great entertaining lectures but teaches the material well. 10/10 would recommend
HE IS AMAZING!!! he is really caring and funny!! Loved his classes
Great prof, un-complicates things and allows cheat sheets for tests which is always a bonus
Great prof and goes over the material that you actually need to know. Although he can, at times, be vague in lectures, his post-class slides are super helpful. The textbook is more or less useless for midterms/exams. quizlet is great for pre-quizzes ;)
BEST PROF EVERRRR!!!!!!!! Literally made bio the best class ever. He's hilarious and an awesome person to talk to. 11/10 would take again.
Professor Taylor is truly one of those professors that you might only run into once in your life. His classes often have a fun, interesting and light-hearted atmosphere that facilitates learning. He is also an extremely effective and hardworking professor who takes feedback to heart and honestly cares about his students. I would recommend him 100%.
Jared has made biochem so much more enjoyable with his humorous personality. He has an overall chill attitude that really helps decrease the stress in this class. Although the material is certainly not easy, he does a great job teaching and making sure we understand the concepts.
I imagine its difficult to connect with your students with a class of 150+ but he was a great teacher on top of really caring about his students
I absolutely loved his class, by far the best prof I have had at UBC. He is very knowledgeable and has a great attitude towards teaching. His classes have a light/fun atmosphere (you never get bored). He is very caring and always ready to help! I would take a class taught by him again in a heartbeat. In short, take his class cause he is perfect :D
Jared was the best professor I have ever had in the three years that I have been at UBC thus far. He is willing to make time for everyone and wants you to succeed. He makes the effort to get to know his students which is remarkable since there was roughly 170 in my lecture. I really felt that he cared about how he taught and how his students felt.
Dr. Taylor is one of the most caring profs I've ever met. He values building a comfortable environment for his students to ask questions, in class and in his office. He is also very commited to the success of every student, holding frequent office hours and answering questions on Piazza. Dr. Taylor is a real asset to the teaching team at UBC.
One of the best profs I've had so far. Really caring, puts a lot of effort into lectures, relatable, and will walk around lecture hall learning everyone's names. Show up to class and you are set!
Caring prof, pretty cool guy and tries to relate to students by sharing his interest in video games. Just make sure you actually do the prereadings without googling the answers too much because if you invest the extra 20 mins before classes, it's the easiest A ever (esp. with Dr. Taylor)!
Super cool guy. Really cares about his students. Doesn't sugarcoat anything, but tries to make sure every student understands the content. Makes tons of jokes, and tries to keep the feeling light and fun. Highly recommend this prof even if bio isn't your best subject. He always stays after lectures to answer everyones questions.
Great professor who makes jokes and tells stories that are interesting. Gives every student an equal chance at succeeding and by far my best first-year professor
During our last lecture, he spent a solid chunk of class giving us a little inspirational speech. He wasn't afraid to share his failures in his own life to show us that failure is a completely normal part of life. I still remember his speech to this day and it was the highlight of my first year at UBC.
Absolute legend. 10000/10 would fail BIOL112 just to take it again with Dr. Taylor. Quite possibly the best prof I have ever had. Dr. Taylor cares about all his students learning and is often available to answer questions and emails. Jared is one of the most caring and inspirational profs you will ever meet, his lectures are engaging and fun 100%.
Really enjoyed his class, also got a pretty good grade
Class environment is really good + cares about students beyond wanting them to learn well - he also wanted us to be comfortable in his lectures and with looking for help. Classes are great and covered everything we needed to know.
He's super nice & funny. Lots of office hours. Makes his lectures engaging, lots of clicker questions & participation assignments in class worth about 6%. Group parts on midterms & final which will count towards your grade for sure! Makes sure to cover ALL the material. His post-lecture slides are also super helpful, definitely take it with him.
His lecture slides, in-class activities, and required pre-reading quizzes should be enough to get you a decent mark in the course alone. If you put a bit more effort into it, it will be an easy A. He makes it very clear what you need to know for the exams. He's also a very caring and funny professor.
This guy is the greatest YOYO master at UBC. His superior YOYO wizardry taught me everything I need to know about Bio 112.
Bless up JT. He's not only a great, super kind teacher, but he's also hilarious and makes me look forward to class, despite the class being at the end of the day. Makes the material interesting and class goes by super quick.
he is the BEST. I love this man. Kind, caring, hilarious, and knowledgeable are only a few words to describe him. I wish he could be my prof throughout my entire undergrad.
Jared was by far my favourite prof this year. He is hilarious and makes great jokes, but is also very effective in how he teaches, and makes sure to cover everything in the lectures. He's a very fair grader, and he really just wants the best for his students. Also extra props because he memorized everyone by name.
Best prof. Dr. Taylor knows the material inside and out and it showed in his lectures/office hours. He is super knowledgeable and cares a lot about his students. He has a ton of office hours and is super helpful if you see him 1 on 1. Such a bro.
An amazing prof! I never even wanted to miss a lecture. He does his best to answer all questions and effectively motivates all students to participate. He assigns a decent amount of quizzes and readings but they really do help! I learned a lot from him and his hilarious yet educating lectures. I'm looking forward to taking another class from him.
Dr. T is a real gem. He made me be super excited about each and every single of my biochemistry classes (which is a lot to say for someone who hates biochem like me). He is not only awesome at teaching and making you laugh at class, but also super accessible outside class. Going to his office hours was the highlight of my day.
Jared was a true gem. His aptitude in teaching is perfectly complemented by his casual and humorous demeanor. He explains the material in the simplest yet the most effective way and invites curiosity in his environment. True legend!
He was fantastic. He was funny and very engaging, as well made the course content very clear and the tests were pretty fair. Best first year prof I had.
Oh my god! JT is definitely the best prof I've ever seen. He is hilarious, dedicated but also focused and respects his students. Really knows how to teach and also how to entertain. He helps not just about the course but literally ANYTHING! He is a friend more than an instructor.
Great Prof. Do the weekly readings as they go with what is happening in the course that week. Very engaging in class and wants you to succeed.
the best prof in my first year! wish to take his classes again in year 2
He is awesome
Jared is so kind. He makes every boring topic, fun. to pass this course you need to have some knowledge beforehand about basic chem and biol. Pre-Readings are pretty much important for lectures. There are so many learning objectives so you need to read and be ready for the lectures. Tests and midterms are all lecture/textbook-based. Read to pass ;)
Best prof to start off first year!
JT is amazing! I knew he was going to be special when he showed up literally the SECOND WEEK OF CLASS with all 300 of our names memorized just so he could greet us all as we walked into the lecture. He really just takes the time to empathize with his students and is an all-around phenomenal teacher. 1000/10.
Amazing professor! He really tries to answer all the questions and always has a good answer. His lectures are a little fast-paced and even though the material itself was not interesting he made them really fun. I would definitely take his classes in the future!
Having a class with JT was a great way to start off my first term at UBC. He takes the effort to try to get to know as many of his students by name as possible, which is absolutely incredible. Most importantly, his tests are very fair. Make sure that you understand the lecture slides, and you'll succeed!
Jared is probably one of the best professors at UBC. He is incredibly kind and is very willing to do everything in his power to ensure you do well. He truly cares about each of his students, learns everyone's names (even if there's 300 people) before the first class. Highly, highly recommend his courses!!!
was a little worried that he'd just be the cool prof everyone liked but a horrible lecturer, but i was wrong! he's amazing and funny but also a really great teacher, as well as helpful in office hours. not the kind to let you slack off and pass, which i appreciated.
Extremely energetic prof, he's so excited all the time it seems like he's high. His lectures are clear and organized, and his explanations are great too so he is definitely good at what he's doing. There's lots of clicker questions and worksheets in class for good practice
10000% recommended Jared is one of the best science professors I've had at UBC. He is to the point, with clear and detailed explanations. He explicitly states what we should focus on to succeed in the course. He makes use of his lecture times very well so that important concepts are covered and students aren't left confused. Also a fun person :)
How do I put this, he is THE BEST prof i've ever had, hands down. He genuinely cares about all his students and tries to connect with everyone. Unlike other profs you can feel the human in him. If you get the chance, take the course, you won't regret it.
Not that JT needs anymore reviews on this site, but he really is a good prof. Beware, the content of Biol112 is brutal and just because JT is awesome doesn't mean you're guaranteed an A. BUT this is the only class i have been in while in my first year of uni that was full every time. He made it fun to go to class and therefore easy to pay attention
really cares for his students. lectures are interesting and his explanations are very clear. would definitely recommend
Literally the highlight of my semester. You can really feel that Dr. Jared cares for his students. He takes the time to remember students' names and is hilarious in lectures, which makes it more engaging than any other class. Exams were fair and you do need to study a bit. I will definitely try to take one of his classes again.
Jared is an absolute beauty, he is extremely caring and a wonderful prof, one of the best I have ever had. Take his class, I promise you it will be the highlight of your semester. JT is the best!
Jared is a great prof! The course isn't super easy, but he makes it all so much more bearable. As someone who took this course twice, with him as the prof the second time, I can tell you that a good prof makes a huge difference in this course! He is understanding and does everything he can for you to understand the material.
Jared is one of the best profs out there! The first few classes could be scary since his lecture speed was pretty fast. But as long you keep up with the pre-readings you'll fall in love with his lectures! The course is application heavy but is doable with practice and with UTMOST CAUTION during exams. Read questions carefully and you'll be fine!
Jared is just phenomenal and I think gives one of the most entertaining lectures at UBC. He does go pretty fast through lectures, but his post-class slides are nearly word-for-word from what he says in lectures and are also very detailed. Jared passionately enjoys lecturing and talking with students and his students reciprocate with much respect.
JT is a LEGEND. I genuinely looked forward to going to his class. There's like 150 kids in each lecture and he magically knew EVERYONE's names on the first day. That just goes to show how much he actually cares about his students. Midterms are super easy and he prepares us well for everything!!
Even though there are already so many great reviews, Jared Taylor is such an amazing prof that I had to share my two cents. Extremely effective lectures, super friendly guy, and very passionate about the content! Bonus is that the grading criteria is super clear! I would love to take one of his classes again
Super hilarious! His lectures were easy to follow along and he always had examples to make sure we were understanding the material well. He encourages participation a lot so feel free to discuss what you think and ask for help when you need it! His multiple choice on exams can be tricky though, so make sure you know the material!
The best prof ever! He explains the concepts extremely well! And his post slides contain what was said during lecture so you don't have to watch the recording again! Super caring and funny! Made my online first yr worth it and enjoyable! Be prepared to answer lots of clickers questions but all are helpful for the exams! Highly recommended 1000/1000
JT was the best prof I have ever had in my first term. He was really caring for his students and tried to make students to get a good grade.
JT is seriously the best prof you will ever have. I would take his class every year just for fun honestly. His lectures are so involved, hilarious and super interesting. His teaching style is super effective and you can tell he loves teaching and really cares for all of his students. Oh and also, he WILL know your name before you've even met.
JT's lectures are super engaging and his slides and videos are super effective in reinforcing learning. He is super caring towards his students and very enthusiastic in teaching this class. Super accessible outside of class via Piazza, email, and Discord. Absolutely one of the best instructors one could ask for; JT is the GOAT.
JT is a very friendly prof and he made this class very uplifting and interesting. Personally, I found BIOL 112 a pretty hard course due to so many conceptual questions and application. However, JT makes this tough course so much better. His office hours are also very helpful & I loved his inspirational speech he gave at the end of the term.
What is UBC doing!!!?!!!?!!?!?!?! We NEED more profs like JT! No seriously , JT is the best prof I had, hire him full time UBC and most importantly, make him teach biochemistry ! !
I'm not even in his class section but I go to his office hours cuz hes that cool. Very helpful and he makes good lecture videos. Best gamer in the school.
JT was by far the best prof ever! His lectures are really useful, as are the lecture slides. As long as you attend lectures and read the textbook you'll do well!
JT is an amazing prof and shows that he cares for his students! His lectures are very engaging and he will anything to help his students succeed. The exams were tough at times but as long as you attend lectures and do the weekly readings/quizzes, you will be just fine.
JT's lectures were very engaging. He explains concepts well in the short amount of time we have to cover the heavy material, and he has lots office hours. Sometimes he emails randomly for spontaneous office hours too. He does go fast sometimes and can be intimidating when you ask questions during office hours as he often says "idk, you tell me"
JT is a great person but not really the best teacher out there. His personality is 4.5/5 however when it comes to learning, you need to get ready to read the book. The lecture slides aren't close to enough, he explained everything briefly & often said that he isn't going to go through something cause the book already explains it well when it's not.
The other comments summed it up pretty well. One thing I will add is, no matter what you're doing, GO TO HIS FINAL LECTURE.
JT is a great professor. I really enjoyed his lectures this summer and he makes the challenging materials memorable with his great explanations.
JT is a literal gem. If you have the choice to take his section, do it! He is such a compassionate and understanding prof. You can see that JT really cares about his students, even though it was a class of 280 people. He is available to help you, whether it's through quick email responses, or answering piazza posts. He truly is one of a kind.
Possibly the best teacher I've ever had. He commands respect, but also mixes it with his great sense of humor. He's also amazing at explaining the concepts in-lecture.
JT is one of those fun profs you see in movies who all the students love. Such a great lecturerhell make the most difficult concepts easy to understandand hes super funny and loves interacting with the class. If you do the pre-readings and listen in lecture, youre practically all set. (also, GO TO HIS LAST LECTURE.)
guys the literal goat
Truly enjoyed his class!! He made sure to explain concepts well and always answered questions without being condescending. His class was my favourite of the term and his lectures made a room of 200 kids feel like a small classroom. Overall it was a wonderful time.
JT is an amazing and engaging prof, would highly recommend taking his course.
Office hours and Dr. Taylor's explanations have been the best way for me to learn biology. When you ask a question, he asks you to explain your thoughts and goes with you through the whole question. I truly appreciate how kind and caring he is for his students. He is very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed his class very much.
Best professor for first year BIOL courses at UBC. He's humorous and the lectures were fun.
Best prof ever! He makes 8 ams something I look forward to. He deserves the best truly
Not helpful, assumes you know content already. It was so hard for me to follow along
Without a doubt my favourite professor this semester. Despite the 8 AM lectures, he made biology super engaging and somehow knew everyone's names??? Idk how but he definitely took the time to get to know the students who participated and made the class very fun for all of us.
So interesting to have a morning class with him. Explain questions in detail and with respect to any questions students have.
JT is an AMAZING PROFESSOR who really knows his stuff! He also has a very dynamic and engaging teaching style that works for most people. Another plus is that he memorized all our names before the first lecture. I definitely recommend rearranging your timetable to have JT as your BIOL 122 prof!
JT's lectures are funny and he presents himself as someone anyone can approach. However, he is also one of the most professional professors I know. He takes academic integrity very seriously and has a few iclicker tricks that weed out the people randomly guessing at home. Overall, awesome prof. He made our 8am classes my fave ones of the term.
Took JTs class for literally 2 weeks before having to drop it due to course conflict but TAKE THIS MANS SECTION IF YOU CAN, he's gotta be the nicest prof, idc if it was only 2 weeks, this man is the GOAT. if your ever reading this harvey spector, sorry i mean jared ;) you are the best!
the goat
JT was the best prof I had this semester. He explains the concepts in a lot of detail but still gave us lots of chances to practice during class using clickers. Took time to teach us about academic integrity and genuinely cares about our success. Also, the yoyo was pretty cool.
I think JT was a good professor and had been very great at teaching the class. Personally not having much Biology knowledge, especially regarding cells, his class and teaching style was amazing in conveying it. The only thing is that lectures aren't recorded but the post class slides with his comments are posted and are amazing for studying later.
Ask about his yoyo skills, ask about his gaming channel, maybe even ask about bio. He gets it.
Great prof. Course is structured in a way that leaves little room to fail and the way he explains concepts in class is really cool. He's a streamer and talks about his yoyo company a lot so like yeah he's obviously cool. Most importantly if you're gonna take biol112 with him: write down what he says!! it'll most likely come on the midterm & exam
Dr. Taylor is a great teacher overall. He understands and empathizes with the student community through his words and actions. He takes initiative to memorize and build rapport with students and hosts office hours to field any student questions. He sends reminders and messages through Canvas. He includes most of the testable info on lecture slides.
I think JT is a great prof overall and cares about his students. The only problem is that he is quite condescending towards his students during office hours when a student asks a "dumb" question. He absolutely hates explaining the "easy" core concepts explained in lectures again in office hours. Lectures are good, but don't go to his office hours.
JT is an amazing professor. He had super entertaining lectures and explained the content very clearly. He was also frequently available for office hours and always answered questions very well. I hope to have him again as a prof for a future course!
Life changing instructor. Learns the names of all of his students and calls them by it during class and office hours. Explains the topics exceptionally well. Posts everything after class + MORE and holds regular office hours. Also, he is very serious on academic integrity and sets up traps for people trying to fake participation from home.
Amazing prof that made every lecture one to look forward to and was very entertaining- whilst still being very good at teaching content and engaging, frequent iClicker questions. Provides great review resources.
I really like his teaching style as he makes sure to go over all the tricky parts of the course, and there are many clickers to stay engaged. Make sure to read about the assigned text beforehand and you're all set.
Overall prof is extremely inaccessible to approach. Very rude when approached and doe snot answer nicely. Also class time is really rushed and assumes kids have previous knowledge and skips over important content. Wish he actually taught instead of clickers all the time!! Very nice and funny guy tho besides when you answer a question wrong.
Chill and fun guy that makes the course interesting, gives good lectures, and seems to respect and care about his students. Overall, a fairly easy class, though lots of weekly assignments, readings and presentations. Everything is done in groups though, and you can even use ChatGPT for some things. Overall, was a great course and great prof!
JT is a great prof who makes class enjoyable with his engaging lectures and frequent iClicker questions. The textbook is helpful, but Unstuckstudy also proved to be a fantastic study tool. Definitely take this class if you want to learn the material well.
I've had the privilege of taking MICB 418 with JT. Overall, JT is a fair prof and a humble guy. MICB 418 has a lot of assigned reading, but it's not overwhelming since it's sectioned out pretty well. We got a low average on the midterm but he put the blame on himself and made up for it with the final. You basically get a free 20% from participation
JT is a really great and caring prof. He's a dynamic lecturer, very enjoyable to listen to. Sometimes it's hard to figure out how to answer the questions being asked, but when there are aspects of the course that people are struggling with, he not only takes the time to clarify them but also goes back and works to make things clearer in the future.
At the start, the class struggled with answering questions, but JT clarified his expectations and took responsibility for unclear ones. His classes are engaging, making topics fun and accessible. He always put effort into accommodating students' needs. Overall, an excellent professor—one of the best I've had at UBC
