Not friendly outside class
No Comments
very short on e-mails but the marking is great
Knows what he is doing, and does it well.
Not friendly, has little patience for students.
Great marker and very smart prof. Might be rude if u ask stupid questions, but very good-natured if u are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He's the type to talk a minimum, so if u like profs who expand a lot on the material, u won't like him.
Training you to thinking
Rude, boring, not very helpful.
Not a bad prof. If you are interested in the field and want to learn, he is the guy. He seems to be a bit hot tempered. His tests are usually hard.
great proff...hard assignments fair enough tests...all exams were open book..he rocks!
He is a very good professor. He is the best prof for teaching discrete mathematics. I advise taking courses with him. Lectures are good and full with exercices that will make you understand the concepts.
Great Prof. His course is not easy, but he always trys to make it simple and understandable in class. So you won't bother reading the tough books by yourself and dizzy.
Great Prof for Discrete Math. The course itself is hard, but he tries to make it easy. If you listen & try to understand his lectures, then you wont have to read the boring book. Midterms are VERY similar to Assignments, so do the assignments. But, he makes final VERY HARD. Then again, he bell curves a lot. For CSE 1019 take him.
For CSE/Math 1019 he is amazing. He explanation is very clear and thorough. He gives assignments from the book. His mid-terms are very very similar to the assignment. His marking is very liberal. But, he makes the final ultra difficult and he bell curves a lot. I ended up with A+. For 1019, I strongly recommend him. You will enjoy the course.
Second course I have taken with Prof. Gryz, and it was just as enjoyable as the first. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to databases, and work he has done with his graduate students can be found within DB2 currently. A lot of material is covered, but put enough time into this course and an A isn't too difficult to achieve.
Very boring lectures
Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. Crazy course with crazy material. He bellcurves the midterm and do yourself a favor pick the presentation over the paper. 20% is participation for contributibg to class discussions. Very nice professor, helpful and very much approachable. You will see him smile or make a joke at least once every class.
Great Prof. Know his stuff. Present them well and clearly
The best prof u can take this course with! He is very nice and helpful. His explanation is very clear, and you dont have to go through the book cz if u attend class u'll leave with everything in your head. His tests and exams are fair too. HE IS PERFECT! my advice: attend ALL his lectures and do ALL the homework and u'll get an easy A or A+ :)
I took a database course with him and he is very good at explaining complex concepts. I would recommend taking 3421 courses with him
Definitely one of the best professors to teach EECS 1019 considering the rest are pretty garbage. I highly recommend taking a course with him. An A is definitely possible if you put a little effort.
I took a discrete math class with him, however, most of the classes were fun, takes care of students (you should go to his office hours). The course were hard, he made it easier and funnier. If it is mandatory for you to take a math class, just take it with him.
He's a good prof bec he sees to it that his class understand the course material and would always want us to ask him questions esp. if he feels that the class doesn't understand the concepts. With a good amount of effort you can put into his course, you can easily get an A or A+. I recommend seeing him during his office hrs
Fairly knowledgeable. Doesn't like stupid questions, so make sure you do the homework and read the textbook if you are not clear on the pre-lecture material. Exam was entirely multiple choice (very easy) to make up for poor grading on tests (by TAs, mind you).
Great prof, takes the time to go through multiple examples and explains things as often as needed. Took EECS/MATH 1019 with him, so happy I did. A+ final grade, finished exam with 1-1.5 hours left to review. Just wish he taught more 1st or 2nd year courses.
Great prof. Really knows his stuff. Tests/exams aren't too difficult either.
Good at taking questions. Explains things clearly. Slight Polish accent. Good sense of humour. Tests are no joke, study. Every week after the test, you're going to hear something like: "The class average was 20%."
Professor Gryz is very good. He doesn't screw around in lecture and he gets to the point. He constantly encourages students to ask questions and he spends a lot of time doing problems in class. This really goes a long way to help prepare for the tests, which are generally fair, but you still need to study for them.
This Guy can't teach. The most useless professor I have ever had.
He WAS a great professor. But this term he changed a lot. Giving unclear outdated notes, misleading content, very unprepared lecture. I heard many friends who took his course. They said that he changed.
Great prof! One the best profs I had!
I dont really understand why he has a good rating here. His slides are abstract and confusing. In the midterm he put questions which were pretty much impossible to do with the material he gave us. Also he is lazy af. It feels like he rushes content so he can go home asap. Lastly, he has some attitudes which makes you not wanna ask any questions.
He gives a lot of examples is class, i don't even pay attention to the slides i just pay attention to the examples and if you are able to do the examples from class you can do well on the midterm and the assignments are straight forward and are also grade boosters the final is multiple choice which is kind of difficult.
Not the best lecturer since he rushed a lot. However, he did narrow down a lot of material which made it easier to study. There were 3 tests, and the nice thing about them was that you didn't need to show much work. Test questions came from homework assignments, so do them. Final exam was long but it was all multiple choice. He's alright.
Awesome professor, just go to lectures
Couldn't get more clear and straight forward proof. Seriously teaches gem for this tough course.
The grading scheme was very unforgiving. We were graded by 19 minute weekly quizzes that were worth 70% of our total grade and the rest was by projects. Jarek is an okay lecturer. He held no office hours and only held a live class once a week. The material done in class did not prepare us well for the quizzes. Avoid online classes with him!
DONT TAKE WITH HIM!!! AVOID HIM AT ANY COST! PICKING HIM MEANS YOU SHOULD STAY WITH YOUR TEXT BOOK FOR EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO MASTER FOR THE TEST!!!!!
takes forever to grade assignments and tests, doesnt do live lectures, convoluted grading scheme
Jarek is the worst prof who I ever seen in my life. It was officially assigned two lectures per week (3 credits). But instead of one lecture we had exams each week. The questions for the weekly exams were given one day before the exam, and it was very difficult to prepare. In such a way the prof reduced his work, but for students it was nightmare.
A class where you can get an A in the easiest reading, but he taught it to the point where the class only had a 60 average. The grading was outrageous, I used the answers I taught last semester to write the midterm and only got a 60, and they thought my answers were wrong. It was hilarious
If I had a choice I wish I can take Jarek's lectures in person instead of listening to his recordings. He isn't boring at all and provides really good examples in his lectures (even recorded ones) You can tell he is very knowledgeable. His tests are pretty manageable make sure you take notes in guest lectures for this course!
Why? I think most of the problems with the course had to do with the very harsh marking by his TAs, but the prof is responsible for the course structure. It was unwise to make the assessments essay-based with 400+ students in the course; the first set of marks were released AFTER the drop deadline. Lectures are pre-recorded, reads off txtbk slides.
"Why?" reused old lectures from last year that are atrocious. reading off slides with bad mic quality. His replies to questions are vague and TAs just send automated replies. Dont know how having 400+ students in a single section with few tas is a good idea. the marking is entirely arbitrary copy-pasted feedback midtrm avg was low due to this2
Not the best course I've taken, mostly on part of TAs. Midterm grading rubric was all over the place, and confusion caused by grading out of 35 instead of 100 on eClass. Live guest lectures were interesting, but slide recordings were tedious. Paper 2 ignored because of a TA leaving, which was nice. Final was very Ctrl+F-able. Not bad, but not great
No feedback on final exam. Imagine being paid $100k+ to make recordings of you reading off your slides
I feel he is a good prof. Instructions for assignments were very vague, needed to ask questions to clarify things. Tests/exam had lots of relevance to the textbook and prerecorded lectures.
Completely useless course with just as useless professor. only reads off of slides and there seems to be hundreds of them with all words, no diagrams or examples or anything. talks in a monotonous voice and expects everyone to just memorize everything. TA's seem give grades depending on their mood since they never stay consistent with marking.
This course is terrible. The course itself is useless and the lecture are truly a waste of time. The TA does not care about your mark and just spins the Mario kart block for your grade. She marks based off mood and even if you ask her to regrade your mark she refuses, even if you point out the flaws in the grading . Waste of money waste of time.
This course is free, ignore the complainers. Just get your A by reading the slides, you don't even really need to attend the lectures. 80% of the course is MCQ and the rest is a research project which is an easy 100%. :jarek_why: :jarek_afraid:
Mid Course with a Mid prof. EECS 3000 is probably one of the most useless course ever
The course is genuinely a waste of money and for a course that is just ethics in computing (which should be easy), he makes it so difficult. He gave a 40% midterm and 40% final, and isn't accessible outside (he doesn't even give out his email). The only redeemable part of this course is a select few guest lectures.
Good class, good prof. Exams reflected the material taught. Very interesting readings/lectures. I was initially skeptical of this course but the ethical social issues of technology are a lot deeper than I thought and I came out of this course with a very balanced/up-to-date perspective on the issues.
Nie mowie po polsku
This prof is a joke. One of the worst professor i ever had and due to strike ,He showed his true self. He is not helping students at all and with all cost he wants to make this course harder for students and funny thing is you can't complain about him to department as well,So try to avoid him if you can otherwise just try to pass this funny course.
Not much to say about the prof but lectures arent recorded and the course is completely useless. Bunch of nonsense about ethics which does nothing for your degree. Got marked on two tests worth 40% each and an essay worth 20%. The tests were multiple choice but theres so much worthless content that you have to remember.
My experience with this prof has been mixed. In-person I thought he was quite good and I would've rated him higher than this, but once the strike happened and he moved the course online it was quite bad. The lectures were awful online and the tests (midterm and exam) were similarly bad. At the end of the day I can only rate my experience though.
Joke of a prof. All his lectures besides the guest lectures are useless since he says the entire textbook chapter is testable but he doesnt go over the entire textbook content during lectures. why bother lecturing then? showed his true colours during the strike, offered 0 support for students, made our lives miserable. get a new prof 4 this course
TLDR to get a B+ or higher: great lecturer, not available outside of class really. if you're behind, study the amazing book that goes with the class. book is phenomenal. but i would highly recommend attending the lectures and only using the book to catch up on materials because being behind during lecture u wont understand s*** would take again
assessments are very unclear and unorganized. Essay format changed after submissions were already made. Midterm and Exam had material that was not properly covered at all.
Just another overpaid prof you can't escape for a course you don't need who can't stomach making anything such as attendance or notes easy in the course, otherwise you might realize what a bird course it is. Good luck I guess.
Your entire grade is cut up into a few things so if you fail one good luck. In general jarek just makes everything ultra hard for no reason probably to stroke his own ego and makes this course tedious and boring. GOOD JOB I'm sure that will make people HAPPY about learning ethics and TOTALLY won't make them hate it. CONGRATS.
Nobody admires you Jarek, people only take your class because you're the only professor hosting this money grab course. Your life's work is meaningless and I hope one day the same students you inconvenience build your replacement so greedy professors like you can finally get a real job and contribute to society.

Most would agree for indigenous studies to be funded again at this university rather than this useless course. People are obviously cheating in exams, they use the same feedback for all students, and the TAs and professors are doing nothing to clear up confusion with marking. University is a scam and it's clearly shown through this course.
Course content was ok but this prof is probably going to be the most insufferable person you'll have to deal with at this school. He is rude in emails and eclass announcements and is very unapproachable. Cheating was rampant during the midterm exam and the TAs just didn't give AF about it. Why even do a midterm then? Just assign us an essay...
This mandatory class was frustrating due to the professor's lack of support. He refused to share guest lecture materials and was harsh in grading, providing minimal or unhelpful feedback. His approach made it seem like he was more focused on making the course difficult than on supporting students. Overall, it was a negative experience.
Extremely strict marker; ambiguous in conduct; snarky behaviour
I love you Jarek. I admire you. You are cherished. You are loved. You are valuable. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away.
This class has been one of the worst class experiences I've ever had, Professor is rude, the grading is tough for no reason and the marking scheme is so vague. No one is helpful, all the email responses are just snarky remarks from the professor. Genuinely awful.
I will admit Jarek himself is a pretty good/entertaining lecturer, but the course is terrible. Mandatory guest lectures, midterm and final worth 40% each, him and Emma (the second prof basically) constantly contradict each other. TA's rolling dice for midterm grades, cant req regrade for specific Q, and regrade may even make your grade go down.
Course is easy, prof is rude. So many updates and the course is unnecessarily confusing to navigate and the prof gets frustrated at his own poor communication and takes it out on the students.
This is the course that made me realize that University is a scam. Prof Gryz is a strange and unusual person and I hope to never cross paths with them ever again.
Jarek the type of guy to change late submission policy from "10% penalty a day" to "no late submissions accepted" 8 hours before the last assignment is due. Genuinely never been so shafted by a professor before.
Prof may be unapproachable but half of you guys are complaining over an actual skill issue. All you had to do for the midterms was recall the textbook and lecture scenarios and list the reasons from the textbook or prof. The midterm was practically free and you guys are still complaining. Only issue is I agree with eclass layout being confusing
Below review is absolutely correct. Just read textbook and memorize the definitions and ethical scenarios good and you're chilling. The textbook is very easy to read actually, there's nothing technical, it's nothing like Tourlakis' textbook, so don't be afraid to open it.
disorganized - changing syllabus 3 times in the middle of the sem. didn't do any teach, got the TA to do most of it. course had nothing to do about ethics even tho its an important course for engineers. didn't care made test unnecessarily hard just for the sake of doing so. exam had 10/75 question that had to deal with ethics everything else wasted
Where do I begin? This professor has 3 hour lectures where he speeds his way through the example questions ( which he refuses to post online,no egs in slides), no questions from slides on midterms or final. has assumptions for every question which he does not let you know about and finally the final was 16 random mcqs of questions we never saw.
Many 1.0 reviews are very telling that they are too illiterate to read a textbook or watch a few videos. Everything professor does is solely to check those two criteria. There is no excuse for all the eclass forum spamming you guys have been doing because you tried to exploit the eclass deadlines for your benefit and then play victim
All the people writing 3 star reviews are complaining too much. This guy is easily a 5 star course type of guy. The person below me complains so much and hates students who have English as a second language.
This course with Jarek suits students who learn well through fast-paced lectures and active participation. Key advice: attend the first class—if it feels overwhelming, drop it immediately and pick another course. It only gets harder from there.
This was a useless course taught by a careless professor. He and the TA's contradicted each other countless times on questions about the assignments and tests. It is a crime that this course is mandatory and that he is the only professor teaching it.
The course itself is supposed to be about ethics which sounds easy enough but the professor and his gremlin TA's make it 10 times harder than it should be. Garbage questions in exam that are not related to ethics. 3 Hour lectures that are boring to say the least. The guest speakers are good but then you have to write a reflection with no criteria.
A silly yet mandatory indoctrination course for students who care nothing about politics or philosophy but simply want to contribute to technological advancements. To make matters worse, the professor in the utmost maximum calibre ensures that students GPA's are negatively affected. There are other more important courses to focus on.
do the opposite of whatever he says
Probably one of the worst profs I've had. Terrible and condescending attitude. He is really unclear on what needs to be done. His TAs graded the midterm very harshly and marked people wrong for matters of personal opinion. The assignments are light and the final wasn't bad but overall it's a terrible run and pointless course.
