This was possibly one of my favorite classes. Prof. Hinckley did a wonderful job at keeping our 2.5 hour night class entertaining. Tests were easy if you just came to class and listened to the assigned music. Most people got this class confused with the Music 190 class, which is the notes, chords, etc. in music. Wonderful class, wonderful teacher!

I freaking love Dr. Hinckley. This was my favorite class this semester. You can just read the book and do fine on the test, but don't because the lectures are really good. He's so funny and makes the topic really interesting and fun. Even though I have a music background, I still learned tons in this class. Definitely the best GE I've ever taken.

I love Prof. Hinkley and I love this class! 8 concerts required, but this professor is the greatest! Definitely recommend him! Tests are fine if you go to class and study a little before. He is just an awesome teacher and I enjoyed this class everyday!

This guy is awesome.. exams are easy and are all structured the same way. He is very chill on missing deadline dates and if you know the concepts he discusses in class you will get near 100% every time.

Hinckley is so awesome. Great, funny guy, interesting classes, really flexible with deadlines if you just talk with him in person. There are 8 concerts you need to attend as it's a huge part of the grade, but I ended up enjoying the concerts. Tests are essentially straight out of the book. Study hard the day of, take the occasional note, get an A.

Great class. Easy as pie...just make sure you know the songs, their author, and genre. I made 90-98% on every test. If you pay attention in class you really don't have to study. TAKE IT FROM HIM!

Alright. I know "music history" might sound a little boring at first, but it's really not. Hinckley always manages to keep it interesting, and you don't really have to do the reading. If you just listen to the examples he lists and go over your notes before the test, you'll get an A. Yeah, you have to go to 8 concerts, but it's really not that bad.

If you have a background in music this course will be cake for you. The lectures were a little boring but I liked Dr. Hinckley's taste in classical music. There are 8 concerts you have to go to but they're no longer than an hour and a half an hour, they won't kill your social life. I never cracked the textbook open once and I aced this course.

Dr. Hinckley is the best! Just take notes in class and listen to the listening that he assigns for his exams and you will ace this class. This class is really easy and very enjoyable.

Easiest 3-credit GE at BYU. Don't let the syllabus and the first day intimidate you, this class is cake. Hinckley makes lecture interesting and I acquired a greater respect for classical music. Half of the test questions come from listening samples, and he even tells you beforehand what pieces to listen to. My least stressful class ever at BYU.

Professor Hinckley is the EVER. I just loved his class. I have never had music classes, and it was harder for me then for the rest of the class and I still managed to get an A-. I could have easily gotten an A. He is the funniest person Ever. I loved this class.I`m sure it would be boring in any other case,but he knows when to be funny,it was great

Dr. Hinckley is great! The classes are fun and very informative. I was in a huge class of about 300 people, but I still felt comfortable approaching him and asking questions. If you can, definitely take Music 101 from him. It was one of my favorite classes this semester.

Super easy class and tests as long as you go to class and know the vocab words he taught. Dr. Hinkley is really funny and easy to talk to if you need help.

This class was so much fun! When you take notes during lectures and listen to the examples that he gives you way before the exam, you'll do great in this class. His lectures were never boring because he makes so many jokes. The exam prep sessions with his TA were VERY helpful!!! So, go to these sessions!

I LOVED THIS CLASS! I wasn't very interested in classical music before I took this class, now I love it. This class is easy if you attend every class period. There are only 2 tests - midterm and final, and also you are required to go to a certain number of concerts, which was fun. If you need to take this class, I highly recommend this teacher!

I absolutely loved this class! Dr. Hinckley is great! You can tell he loves teaching and wants his students to do well. Loved going to class, but even if I missed it was easy to get caught up. Good professor. He posts study guides for his tests online which are very accurate descriptions of what you need to know for his tests. He's got a great sense of humor, too. Whatever you do, don't take the block class because the 2 and a half hours , twice a week will bore you to tears. In one hour increments your attention span will fail you.

Dr. Hinckley is a good professor... when he's actually talking this class is somewhat interesting. If you don't like classical music, you'll be bored out of your mind when he's not talking (i.e., you're listening to music) but you can still do well in the class. Easy A if you complete all of the assignments (which is not hard) and study for the tests. Basically everything you need to know is on the study guide. He is really funny!

Six concert assignments, a mystery music assignment, two exams, and a recorded music assignment is what is due. Go to the concerts on time! Easy class as long as you do the simple work. Hinckley is a hilarious professor who you can learn a lot from! Take this class from him!

Dr. Hinckley is great! Going to class was enjoyable as his lectures were filled with things about music that I had never known before. He takes interest in his students, even though there's hundreds of us, and he grades quite fairly. Go to the T.A. reviews, take good notes in class, do the assignments, and you will surely get an A.

Very nice, straightforward, easy enough. Listen to the songs like they're your new favorites! He'll tell you what songs will be on the test, so practice recognizing them, their composer, and knowing what they exemplify for that time period. Take good notes. the concerts weren't so bad, I used lots of student recitals-they're FREE.

Loved this class. Dr. Hinckley is funny as heck some days, and his lectures are always interesting and informative. I developed a much greater appreciation for music in this class. Tests were easy if you went to lecture and did the reading/listening. This was easily my favorite class of the semester and one of the best I've had at BYU.

Dr. Hinckley's Music 101 class was amazing. I took it in Fall 2010 as a block class, and even though the classes were in the evening, I enjoyed every one of them. Dr. Hinckley is very knowledgeable and passionate about music, and that comes through in his teaching. Do the homework and use the study guides, and you should do well on the test.

Best Music 101 teacher. He knows and loves this material, and tells a lot of interesting and fun historical stories to keep the material alive. His tests emphasize what he says in class more than what is in the textbook (though very similar), so I recommend going to class everyday so you don't miss an answer to a test question.

This class was great! I loved Professor Hinckley. He is funny and way nice. This class is fairly easy, which was nice because all of my other classes were hard. Everything you do in the class is beneficial. I loved what I learned!

Dr. Hinckley is a great professor. He appears to have strong musical knowledge and an interest in his students' well-being. His two tests were very easy after about an hour of study. He requires students to attend six concerts. It's best to complete these well before their due dates. This has been one of my easiest and most enjoyable classes.

I am NOT musically inclined at all but I like this class. Just crammed for tests learned the music examples and I got an A in the class. Hinckley is great. Explains things very well. Class was fun. I would recommend it. Nightly reading is not necessary.

Professor Hinckley is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is passionate and knowledgeable about his subject, and transfers that interest to his students. I've played piano for 15 years and still learned a lot, but even if you have no musical background, it's easy and fascinating. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

This class was awesome! I took it for as a GE and I loved it. Dr. Hinckley was an awesome professor. If he taught more GE classes I would take another one from him. He was funny and interesting. Classical music appreciation made easy. Very informative and interesting, even to beginners. Spotify and iTunes cheaply replace the textbook & CD's. Go to class, the reviews, and drill yourself on the listening examples he gives (much less painful than it sounds), and you'll do fine. (If taking block class, attend as many concerts as you can ASAP.)

Dr. Hinckley is definitely the best choice for taking Music 101. He knows his stuff and is passionate about it as well. He also is not afraid of embarrassing himself which makes the class much more fun.

Everything that was on the tests were in his lectures and/or the textbook. He gave out very useful study guides. Sometimes he would tell personal stories in class which could make it feel like a waste of time OR could allow you to better connect to the composer on whom he was lecturing. Overall, good lecturer, organized, class came together nicely

Easy class, easy A. I personally did WAY poorly in the tests (including the final). But I still got an A for doing my homework and finishing the fun and easy assignments of the class. At first I was scared with the entire schedule. But Dr. Hinckley is well structured and he does NOT want you to miss the A. The class is fun, relaxing and EASY.

Hinckley is one of the coolest guys at BYU. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't make music more complicated than it needs to be. Pay attention in class and/or read the books/do the listenings and all will be well. Tests aren't hard at all. But class is fun and interesting. Hinckley is the greatest!

Professor Hinckley is amazing. An A in his class is easy if you're willing to put in some effort. Professor Hinckley is very helpful and understanding. I stopped coming to this class after I took the first test. I have to admit that I studied pretty hard for the first test and got an 88%. There is 25 extra credit points that Dr. Hinckley offers so if you do well on the first test you really don't have to do well on the final to get an A in the class. The tests aren't easy so be prepared!

LOVED this class. You could get away with skipping the lectures if you do the reading assignments and study hard for tests but I never missed one because they were enjoyable. Homework rarely exceeds the daily reading assignments that are very short & not even necessary if you pay attention in lecture. This class was easy, fun, and I learned a lot.

I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! He's hilarious. His tests are funny, his lectures are interesting, and he's just a cool guy in general. I would recommend taking the full semester class rather than the block class, though. You have a certain number of concerts to go to throughout the course, and it's harder to get them in during a month and a half.

LOVED this class. I thought I knew a lot about music before I took it, yet I learned a TON. Dr. Hinckley is a great professor; you don't really need to attend class but I enjoyed lectures enough I did. There is a midterm and a final with 5 short online open-book quizzes, and extra credit available. If you study, an A is very doable.

This class was a lot of fun & one of easiest I've taken. 1st half of semester I stressed a bit, but once I got to 1st test, I was like "Oh, was that it?" Then I just enjoyed myself for the rest of the class. So do study, but don't stress. His new textbook (he wrote) is great, b/c it is like having a copy of his class notes, very concise & helpful.

If you like any type of music, take this class. Don't listen to the students below. This class is not hard. I got above a 91% on both tests and i knew nothing about music before this class. I have never learned so much in a GE class or had so much fun preparing for tests-listening to beautiful music. Bro Hinkcley is a great teacher.

First off, this class should be called History of Music 101. For some reason I was expecting something a little different. He knows a LOT about music and classes can be interesting. I would say it would be really helpful to do the readings. You have to go to 6 concerts and you definitely have to study for the exams. Attendance is not mandatory.

Dr. Hinckley is extremely intelligent, and he helps you appreciate music more. I recommend this professor if you are just trying to fill your Arts credit. You have to go to six concerts throughout the semester, so go to the concerts early in the semester! There is not too much work in this class, only two tests, and the tests are fairly easy.

Very passionate about his subject. I thought he was funny and found a way to make something i had no interest in somewhat entertaining. Class isn't hard if you do the homework. This class made me sorta like classical music, and some background basics for music.

His lectures are quite entertaining, I never dreaded coming to Music 101! I learned a lot in this class! He's pretty strict on his rules; there's not a lot of wiggle room if you don't follow directions precisely. Overall would recommend. He's a nice guy but seems to have a bit of an ego, which turns away some but I found that it was bearable. (:

Loved Music 101. Prof. Hinckley is so funny! Class isn't mandatory (although helps a lot with tests), and it is actually interesting if you like music. Tests need to be studied for but aren't too difficult. The textbook (written by him) if also funny and very easy to understandfollow. Tests have funny questions--laughed out loud in testing center.

Prof. Hinkley is a great professor! Attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps with the tests, and his lectures are usually pretty enjoyable if you're interested in learning about music. I've always wanted to take a basic music history class, so his music 101 was perfect. I could skip when I wanted and not miss anything! But his lectures were great because he took the chance to tell a lot of stories. I just made sure to go to the concerts and spend a couple hours reviewing the music and material before each test, and I was fine.

I imagine tests would be pretty hard if you don't study, just look at the study guide and DO THE LISTENINGS!!

Dr. Hinckley is very clear and easy to understand. It's really a music history class so you aren't expected to read music or anything. You'll learn about composers and music genres, the lectures are really interesting. The homework is very manageable and it's easy to get an A if you don't procrastinate. Go to all 6 concerts as early as you can.

Great teacher and a really great class. It went over a lot of composers during the different musical periods. Tests were easy if you study the study guide that he gives to you. Quizzes were all open book. All in all it was a good and easy class.

Fantastic professor. I took the music 101 as a block course instead of a semester course. With the decreased amount of time the class sessions had to be longer, but even though this was the case I really enjoyed it. This professor is fantastic.

Hinckley lets you know exactly what he expects and it's up to you to do it. Don't do the assignments late and expect leniency. Keep up with the quizzes (you only have 1 day to do them but can take them twice) and concerts, do the extra credit for easy points. Get to 404 points on the semester and you earn an A. I liked how Hinckley does this class.

Professor Hinckley is great! He has this dry sense of humor (I liked it), and that makes his class much more entertaining. He is pretty much obsessed with composer puns. I LOVED the music for the class (some iTunes downloads were made). I studied pretty hard for the tests- especially the listening portions- and did ok. Not too much reading.

This class is a great GE. Super easy. Professor Hinckley is not the most friendly professor, but his grading criteria is very clear and it is all based on a point system. If you listen to the music, do the reading, and turn all the assignments in on time then you'll be fine. Class was pretty boring, but it's obvious he loves it so that helps it.

Great professor. He knows his stuff. Also, just a really fun class. Every test really was easy. Of course you have to study, but as long as you follow and study the things on the study guide you will get a 100. The class was huge, so I never really got to talk with him or work close with him, but that's pretty normal for these huge GE classes.

This was one of my favorite classes this semester. Brother Hinkley taught me all sorts of things about music. I'd recommend this class to anyone. This class gave me a new appreciation for symphonic music

I think doctor Hinckley is super funny. Going to class helps but you can get away with doing the readings and listening assignments diligently and still get an A while not going to class. Just make sure you do the listenings when you are supposed to and go to your concerts early.

This class is boring, but easy. I missed some classes & still did well. (Do attend enough to stay connected, though.) Do the reading, listen to the music (KNOW IT WELL), take the tests and quizzes, and attend the concerts. The music is pleasant, and Professor Hinckley is fine. It's just a very large class, so it's not engaging. It works as a GE.

Listening to "listening assignments" is essential to pass exams. Really nice guy. Has clear grading criteria and is very strict about following the criteria. The times I talked to him personally was a little uncomfortable, but I might have just caught him at a bad time because he is always upbeat during lectures. Easy class. Good lectures. Take it.

Professor Hinckley is amazing. His lectures are engaging and interesting. I hated music history before his class. Getting good grades is easy; listening sections on tests are a little challenging but doable if you study. The extra credit is super helpful and is quick and easy to do. 10/10 would take again.

This class was really easy. He says class attendance is important, but his lectures cover the exact same thing the reading assignments do and has all the information you need. I rarely ever attended class and did very well just by doing the assignments and reading on my own.

Hinckley really cares about the material and about making music more a part of our lives. If you are musically inclined, you'll love this class. It will be an easy A as long as you do the listening and attend the concerts. If not, it might be a lot to take in right at the beginning.

If you're going to take Music 101, take it from Dr. Hinckley. He loves what he does, his class is a safe environment, and he always answers emails and questions kindly and makes sure you get it. His tests are straight forward, a little bit of work, but nothing you can't handle. Not a class you need to worry about consuming all your time.

He is so funny. He's one of those cool music nerds who knows a lot of random facts that are actually interesting. The grading criteria is clear as crystal on the syllabus. Read it. If you don't follow the instructions exactly for a concert report you will get a 0. Listen to the music samples and follow the study guide for tests and you'll do fine.

Hinckley was my favorite teacher last year. He was one of the most entertaining teachers I ever had. You spend the entire class period just listening to good music. You can't go wrong there. It is easy to get an A. Definitely would recommend.

Dr. Hinckley is hilarious, kind, and exciting to listen to. This is an easy A, especially if you have ANY music background. You are required to attend 6 concerts and write a short paragraph about them. There is one recorded music project (took me 10 minutes), EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNIT, 2/3 midterms and a final. He only teaches this class, so do it!

Prof Hinckley is a SOLID CHOICE. I took this class for a GE credit, and I don't regret any part of it. The only thing is I wouldn't take it as a term class because 2.5 hour lectures get pretty boring. Also, prior music knowledge isn't necessary, and the tests and mini-projects aren't bad. 11/10, def recommend

Dr. Hinckley is great! You use his textbook for all of the course readings and his lectures are mostly pictures of his travels, so you only have to read the book and do the recorded listening assignments to get a decent grade. Extra credit assignments are easy--do them!! If you're looking for an easy arts credit, this is a great option.

I loved Dr. Hinckley's class! For people with no music knowledge, this class is great! You don't have to read the textbook; he explains everything in class. I read it anyways because it takes (at most) four minutes. YOU MUST DO REQUIRED LISTENING FREQUENTLY; this is most of his exam. Attend six concerts as well.

Easiest A and I didn't even read a sentence out of the textbook, so don't buy it. Dr. Hinckley is always so well prepared for his classes and he is good at keeping lectures very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, and I took it as a term class. He gives breaks in between the long lectures so it's not bad at all. Take this class!!

Honestly, you don't really need to go to class because he teaches directly from the textbook. However, go every once in a while just because he's funny and has good lectures. Don't wait until the day before the test to do all the listenings. I did that all semester and still got an A, but it was a pain. Overall had a good experience in his class!

Professor Hinckley made music 101 enjoyable! Do the listening assignments and go to the concerts, and you'll get an A for sure.

Professor Hinckley is the best professor I've had so far! His lectures and even the exams are very funny. You don't have to do much work, just keep up with the reading, and go to concerts. The reading is just a couple pages for each class. The only semi-difficult part is the music recognition on tests if you're not good at discerning between music

Hinckley is THE MAN. Enough said. He was the clearest, and most fair professor I've had my entire time at BYU. Take him to fill the GE or if you're a music major. You won't regret it.

Holy easy class all you have to do is go to 6 concerts throughout the semester and study the study guide for the test. I stopped going to class after the first midterm. Easy A

I am not a musical person but this class with Hinckley was incredible. I took it Spring semester, and finished the semester with a 101%. He gives three tests (2 mid terms and 1 final). Grading is fair, and you know exactly what to study for and how to complete assignments! You're required to memorize musical pieces and composers-just listen daily.

Hinckley is amazing. Absolutely must take this class from him. Super accessible, not trying to trick anyone, and great instructor. I had an A but still considered dropping the class just so I could take it again. He's one-of-a-kind. And I learned a ton about music

LOVE DR HINCKLEY! TAKE THIS CLASS!! Easiest A you will ever get. He is so clear in his teaching and grading, and 100% willing to help or discuss grades, etc. Tests are super easy and you always know exactly what to study. Lots of extra credit opportunities. I took it just 2nd term and it was a breeze so a semester would be literally nothing. DO IT!

Dr. Hinckley is the perfect teacher for this class. He's so passionate about music history and is excellent at explaining stylistic changes from different eras. Going to class is optional because the book is pretty good; however, his lectures clarify really any questions you might have. Also, there are lots of opportunities to receive extra credit.

Professor Hinckley was one of the easiest professors that I have ever had. He gives you study guides for the test and as long as you know the selected music to be memorized, you're golden. 11/10 would recommend.

Okay, I don't know how all these people got easy A's. If you don't enjoy listening to classical music and opera for hours and hours trying to remember certain composers, genres, and other stuff, dont take this class. It's a pain and unless you major in art it will not benefit you in any way. Studied for 5 hours for the first midterm and got 67%.

Professor Hinckley is a really great person and is very passionate about Music. He truly cares for each and every one of his students. However, if you do not have a solid background with Music, then you will spend many hours studying for each of the tests. Reasonable grading system, but it seems like a lot of time is lost in class.

If you have a background in music, this class will be a breeze. If not, it may be a more serious undertaking. Dr. Hinckley is a great guy who you can tell loves what he does. He wants his students to succeed and gives you the tools to do so (most organized Learning Suite I have ever seen!). It's an easy A, but also very rewarding if you let it be.

The class was easy. Very easy to fall asleep so beware. He is very kind and very clear. The biggest thing is memorizing the songs for the test. If you do, you'll get an A. If you don't, easily a B or lower. Easy assignments. Remember, just make sure to memorize all the songs for the tests! That is the test! I recommend him for the GE.

Dr. Hinckley was very helpful in this class. He graded assignments shortly after you would submit them. He is very passionate about music and you can see that when he teaches. I highly recommend this class it was very doable. It is challenging that you do have to memorize pieces of music but he gives you opportunities to do extra credit

Professor Hinckley is a great music teacher! He is a good choice if you need an A for this general education class, and you will also learn so much about music from him! You will never listen to music the same way after this class.

Dr. Hinckley is awesome! He gives tons of extra credit. Even if you're not familiar with music, you can succeed because he teaches so well. If you play any instrument or sing, this class is a no brainer. The only downside is that you have to attend around 6 concerts and write about them, which takes a lot of time. Other than that, great class.

Awesome class, loved the professor, easy extra credit and super interesting. Lectures cover the readings so one or the other but make sure to do all the assignments early as they can definitely creep up. TAKE THIS CLASS

He's a fantastic professor! I took it as a term class that only met twice a week, so each class was 2.5 hours long. I was dreading music 101, but he makes it fun. He teaches with a flair and it's just a good class. He's reasonable and the grades are really easy. I'd definitely recommend!

His exams made me laugh in the testing center. The proctors looked at me a little weird, but at least I can say I enjoyed the tests. Dr. Hinckley tries really hard to make class interesting and funny. I think even if you don't know classical music very well you can still learn to appreciate the story of how music evolved.

Professor Hinckley is incredible at what he does. He is so organized in his material and makes it simple to get the grade you want. The readings take 10 minutes and the listening can be done while doing other things. He offers plenty of extra credit, and is very helpful if you reach out to him. Take this class if you need a low stress art credit.

Lectures were always interesting and you can tell that he puts a lot of time into them. Assignments are generally easy and it is always very clear what you have to do on them to get an A. The tests require quite a bit of studying (to memorize the pieces you have to listen to), but the average score on them is always quite high.

I've played piano for a while and have sung in Chamber choir, but musical terms don't come easy to me, so it was a bit hard at times because the terminology can be confusing even to people with a background. He's really helpful; make sure you get a study group together to fill out the study guides for exams. Spend time on the listening assignments!

Professor Hinckley was great. His class isn't easy but if you read and show up to class you will do well. I have no musical talent and know virtually nothing about music. However, if you do all the assignments and study for the tests, you will get the grade you study for. Make sure you are proficient in the listening portion!

Not a lot to say, kind of a middle-of-the-road class that I won't remember in a year. Just put the work in and get an A. I did learn a lot of useful/cool stuff and the class had a pretty light work load. Hinckley did a good job teaching the material. You don't need to be a music person to do just fine.

Easy to understand textbook, which he then provides great examples for in class. Great class for fall and winter. Best 101 teacher. He's fair and fun. Six concerts with simple write ups, a couple other assignments, and interesting exams using the chrome books in the testing center. It's a very wholesome class, bland at times, but very worth it.

If you're just looking to complete your GE requirement, this is a great option. Tests are very straightforward - just follow the study guide and do the listening assignments you'll do great. He gives a few simple assignments, and requires attendance at 6 concerts outside of class, but those are easy to do. Overall, great guy and a pretty easy class

I didn't open the textbook once and got an A. The class isn't about music theory knowledge after the first test. It might not always be the most engaging, but he'll listen to questions and things. You have to go to 6 art (classical) music concerts outside of class. You also have to recognize piece, composer, genre from an audio file on the tests.

The class was one term and when it was over I was genuinely sad! Jaren is extremely passionate about music but you don't need to know anything about music to do well in the class. Lectures are very very helpful, but I fell asleep half the time, didn't do the readings and just studied for a few hours before taking the tests and aced them

Would take again in a heartbeat. Very clear and makes it interesting. He basically tells you everything that will be on the tests so studying is simple. His tests are clear, honest, and have hints of humor. It's not often I've had to stifle a laugh in the testing center, but some of his sarcastic answers and fake concert programs have gotten to me.

Professor Hinckley is great. This is probably the easiest class I've taken at BYU. His extra credit opportunities are really easy and he reminds everyone about the assignments coming up before most classtimes. His tests are easy if you use the study guides he provides. Keep up with the concert attendance and music listening and you'll be golden.

This class was fairly easy and I really appreciated how Prof. Hinckley didn't try to trick us on tests. He was very clear about what we needed to know and what he expected from assignments. There is a decent amount of memorization and you do need to attend some concerts, but that's really all. Readings are short, and Prof. Hinckley is super funny!

Prof. Hinckley is AMAZING. Such a simple class, and I learned a ton. Be ready to go to 6 concerts during the semester, and definitely don't procrastinate. Straightforward class. Light workload, great lectures, and easy grading criteria. He also updates grades within a few hours of your submitted assignment, which is nice.

EASY!!! You do not need to show up and this was honestly my napping class. I do not know anything about music and I got an A. Just listen to the assigned music and you'll be fine. All music on Apple Music and Spotify. As long as you follow the grading rubric, you will get 100% on all the assignments. I recommend taking this for an easy art credit.

Dr. Hinckley was amazing. His textbook is clear and to-the-point, so you only have to learn what you really need to know. He makes every form, genre, and technique interesting and clear with explanations and audio examples. Plus, he is funny and makes the lectures entertaining. Extra credit is available, tests are easy, and assignments are simple.

Great teacher. Very organized. I never read the textbook and just learned everything I needed to know from attending class. If you study for the tests and memorize the song list, you will do well. I really enjoyed this class.

Prof. Hinckley makes sure that you know what is required of you, and the tests were very, very doable. He is very good at answering questions and his quirky humor is pretty endearing. Whenever I was stressed about my other classes, I would walk into this one and calm down.

We STAN Jaren. This class was a very easy GE, especially for people who have a background in music. He is funny and there is no required homework, just reading if you need it. You have to attend six concerts and you have to be able to audibly recognize pieces for the tests. I can understand the difficulty if you don't have any musical experience.

Class was mostly just going over what we were supposed to have read in the textbook (which I rarely did). Textbook was needed for extra credit though. Assignments were pretty simple, and you could always get his help. Tests weren't bad, but you should study for them, and make sure you know the works he's gone over.

I recommend this class to all my friends who need an art credit. Super easy if you go to lecture and read all the material. Lectures aren't mandatory but are very helpful and pretty fun. Graded on 3 tests and a few short supplemental assignments. Easy A for sure, especially if you have music experience.

I loved this class and the prof and it was an easy A+, but if you don't have experience in or a love for classical music, YOU WILL BE BORED AND HATE CLASS. This class really is what you make it. There's enough overlap between text and lectures though so you will def survive if you skip lectures here and there. Easy extra credit opportunities.

Prof. Hinckley is a great teacher. He loves the course material and tries to help his students love it too. He understands that his class is a GE so he doesn't expect you to spend all of your time on his class. Memorize the terms on the study guide (focus on listening examples, their genres, and composers) and attend class and you'll do well.

Very easy class even if you don't know anything about music. Do the listening assignments, it's a big part of the test, but it's easy if you're prepared.

The class is fairly memorization heavy but the content isn't too difficult. Lectures are not required but strongly recommended as it isn't always clear what you need to remember from the textbook. There's also some music attendance assignments but they aren't too difficult or long (I was able to do 4 of the required 6 in a week). Would take again.

If you have played an instrument and can recognize instruments in an orchestra this is an easy class to pass. Very little studying required other than memorizing a few songs for each test, but even then he informs you of exactly what he wants. Clear and concise.

By far my favorite class this semester. Amazing professor! He wants you to do well in his class; he does not try to trick you on tests. He is very clear on expectations. It was a bit of work because I took it as a term class. Usually 1 assignment and reading per lecture. More difficult if you do not play an instrument. Extra Credit opportunities.

I took Music 101 from Dr. Hinckley as an on demand class during a 6 week term. He is an amazing professor and is just super sweet. I loved his lectures but because it was a 6 week course, the lectures were very long. Overall a very easy class if you have a background in Music. I highly recommend him, because he genuinely cares about his students.

Brother Hinckley is a great professor & very passionate about music & has great lectures. Its a great online option & even better that you can take it for half the semester. I know NOTHING about music so I really struggled, & would not recommend for someone like me. But if your familiar with music, how to read it, & etc.. youll be fine.

Dr Hinckley is a solid choice, you have to study a lot and memorize the song lists for the tests. If you only memorize the definitions of the terms, you will fail the test.

I really liked taking this class from Prof Hinckley. He answers questions very thoroughly. Listen to all the recordings (obsessively if you can) and take notes on the readings and lectures. Studying is essential for the exams. And start early on the assignments! They arent difficult but they arent designed to be done last minute.

Dr. Hinckley is the SWEETEST!!! I genuinely enjoyed his lectures and he was very interactive with the Zoom chat. The readings take like 2 minutes and aren't essential. There are about 20 songs you need to know for each of the 3 tests. You have to listen to them a lot but it's honestly not that bad. This was a super easy class!

I took the online class. He's super caring & provides clear grading criteria such that you can succeed if you put in the work. Despite all the memorization required to ace the tests I actually enjoyed them. Great class for those even slightly passionate about music. I actually learned useful things in this class. Take MUSIC 101 from Dr. Hinckley!

Professor Hinckley is an awesome teacher. He understands that MUSIC101 is a Gen Ed for most students, so he treats it that way! There was light reading, and everything he teaches in lectures is just review for the test. He's got a quirky sense of humor, and the tests aren't hard at all. BEWARE: There is a lot of listening to classical music! A LOT!

Dr. Hinckley makes learning music fun. I thought I knew all there is to know about music, but nope :) I loved this class and genuinely learned a lot! Dr. Hinckley teaches in such a fun but productive way. I looked forward going to class and I always left with a smile. The homework wasn't bad at all and the few projects we had were easy.

This was an amazing class. I was hesitant to take this but as long as you read the book, take notes, and pay attention to lectures, he gives you all you need to good in the class. The only thing that was slightly harder but still easy was the listening parts of the exam. Professor Hinckley is awesome!

Dr. Hickley is such a great professor! I genuinely enjoyed all of his lectures and have learned so much over the past term. He makes every class so interesting and he is so funny! The hardest part about the class is memorizing the title, composer, and genre of 18-24 songs for every test but it was not too bad. Great class!!

Professor Hinckley actually liked teaching us! It was a miracle!! A professor who was so interested in his students and the subject that he taught was a rare sight to behold. He always answered our questions in great detail. Do what he says (he gives specific instructions) and you will get an A.

I took this class to fill a requirement, but it ended up being my favorite! You can really tell Dr. Hinckley loves what he's teaching, which was so fun. The tests aren't very hard, and he reviews what you need to know in class. The only slightly difficult thing was the listening examples, but they aren't even that bad. Definitely take this class!

There was a lot of listening to music, but if you like learning about and hearing different types of music then it is super fun. Would love to take another class from him. He gives super fun lectures especially towards the end of the semester. This is the first time I've laughed while taking tests because some of the questions are actually really funny.

Music 101 at BYU is probably one of the most straightforward classes you'll have as far as GE's go. The course was On-Demand, yet Prof. Hinckley did present lectures via zoom if students wanted to attend. Class grading was straightforward; concert reports and tests being the majority of points in terms of grades. Overall, I would recommend him!

100% the best professor I have ever had. He is very funny, caring, and a skilled lecturer. He knows how to teach and how students learn the best. The reading doesn't take that long, listen to his lecture, do the assignments and listening, and you will be good. I really appreciated his personality too.

Dr. Hinckley's Music 101 class is honestly the easiest GE class you could ever take! He has his own textbook, kinda expensive, but it is straight to the point, so readings are very short. He knows how to teach well and understands we are not experts in music. He clearly preparers for exams, assignments, and grades easily. Some memorization needed.

Good class and professor! Some parts were hard, especially with the more obscure parts of music history, but he gave extra credit that helped to end up with an A. He's caring and overall it was a good class for my art credit.

Take the sweetest and kindest man you could ever imagine, then give him an undying love for classical/romantic music--you get Dr. Hinckley. He's seriously such a good professor and as someone who didn't love those two formerly mentioned genres, I came out of this class feeling differently. Great sense of humor, nice and easy class. He basically tells you what you'll need to know for the tests while still teaching you and reinforcing the concepts through assignments. He's great.

A super easy general class if you're looking for that art requirement. Dr. Hinkley is a really nice guy with a fairly easy class if you just do the reading or pay attention in class. There were 3 major exams (all online) and a few other assignments that didn't take a lot of extra time.

Literally the best dude ever who is such a total nerd about music but its so cool and funny. He makes the class easy for everyone and as long as you show up for class you really should have no problem getting a high grade. But he literally is the coolest teacher ever

Make sure you do the readings and listening assignments and pay attention in class but that's pretty much all you need to do well. I took this 3 credit Music class in an accelerated format in just 6 weeks. There were 3 exams, a few assignments, and 6 concert attendances required. If you know music at all this class will be a breeze. If you pay attention and learn about different genres and types of music, it will also be a breeze. Fantastic professor, and gives clear feedback.

Professor Hinckley is so awesome!! I am not a musical person, but he has made this class enjoyable. He is hilarious and such an honest man. There are 3 exams and he does not try to trick you!! I would 100% recommend him.

Dr. Hinckley is seriously amazing. His lectures match the reading assignments, and the homework is not time consuming at all. He does a great job helping the class prepare for the exams (there are 3 of them). I myself am not a good test taker but trust me, do you homework and studying and this is an easy A class! Honestly never went to this class and still pulled out a good grade. I think the class is not exactly my choice subject, but Professor Hinckley is super funny and teaches great concepts about music. This is a great GE. There is also only a few assignments, but the tests can be hard if you're not paying attention or at least study good before.

This class is a great class to knock out an art credit. It's a free A as long as you do all the work. Beyond being easy, it was really enjoyable. Hinckley is a laid back professor. I only used the the textbook like three times so try to get it as cheap as you can

Professor Hinckley is awesome. He has a unique perspective on music, and teaches about music in an interesting and engaging way. He has a unique and subversive sense of humor. He's fun to talk to in-person after class, and all of his tests are 100% fair. The course is just the right difficulty for an entry level GE class.

Jaren Hinckley is very passionate about his job and inspires his students. I throughly enjoyed his class, even though the tests were a little tricky.

Prof. Hinkley is really intelligent on music and does his best to make the class fun for non-musicians. So many great anecdotes about composers and stories of his life in performance. Highly highly recommend this class! I looked forward to class every day! If you care about classical music, you'll love this class.

This class is easy. Just go to class and you will be fine. The tests are easy if you study a little bit. Take from Hinckley if you need to take music 101

The lectures are long and it's hard to sit still for 2 hrs but it is also recorded and online which I suggest doing instead. He does exam reviews the day before the test opens so I suggest watching those lectures to pass tests. The textbook helps with the concert assignments and he is pretty lenient when it comes to grading those.

This class was a little hard to sit through but I don't regret taking it. You have to go to 6 classical music concerts and do a write up about each of them. The tests were very hard if you don't understand the concepts. The tests were based off of applying concepts you've learned and not definitions. There was a little extra credit which helped.

He gives assigned readings, then basically covers it all in class. Readings are very short. A huge portion of the tests is being able to recognize songs, but it is multiple choice. His class was very fun, and he was hilarious.

Professor Hinckley was pretty great and I enjoyed this class. He knows a ton about music and makes his class very easy to get an A. The reading before class is very short, you have to go to 6 concerts, and he is super clear about what you should know for exams. Professor Hinckley is hilarious! He really loves what he teaches and makes class fun. He'll often slip in a wholesome music joke that will make your day. You do daily reading and listening, so just make sure you do those. The six different concert attendances are easy too. As long as you pay attention to the readings and understand it, you're set!

I always loved attending lectures. It is nice to sit through the lectures and actually enjoy learning what is being taught rather than rapidly taking notes. You're basically just graded on attending six concerts out of class and three online exams (not proctored or anything). He is passionate about what he teaches and it shows!

Dr. Hinckley was INCREDIBLE. I took his MUSIC101 course as a block class, which meant enduring 3-hour long lectures twice a week. But Hinckley did an absolutely amazing job making me feel engaged and interested in nearly every lecture (they rarely took all 3 hours.) Have an open mind, do the work, take good notes, and you will do just fine!

Took Music 101 to fulfill GE requirement and he was great! I took the 3 hour lecture version, he kept us engaged the whole time and we sometimes finished early. Tests you have to memorize tracks but he goes over everything you need to know. You also have to attend 6 concerts outside of class but he gives clear criteria of how to fill the out.

Professor Hinckley is great! The lectures had a dose of fun and inspiration. If you read the textbook and attend the lectures (not mandatory, but they solidify the knowledge), you'll do great. Cool class, some of the music is pretty out there though. I didn't go to any lectures for the first test and got a B- so I decided to go to class, and just by sitting there I got 100 on the next exam. You can definitely do well if you don't go to class and just read the textbook/listen to Naxos, but I would recommend going.

I LOVED this class. Never thought I'd say I miss learning about classical music but I do. He's funny and teaches affectively. I thought concert attendance assignments would be more annoying but there's a lot of options on campus and you can do half online. Review sessions before tests were great. I just really loved this class and this teacher.

This is my favorite class I have taken at BYU. Professor Hinckley is so kind and genuine. Lectures are engaging and insightful. He cares deeply about music and it shows. The homework/tests are straightforward. Subject matter is easy even if you don't come from a musical background. His puns are hilarious-I always left this class in a good mood.

Very easy class. Taught me a lot I didn't know before, helped me get into classical music, and was simple in structure. All the tests are easy and straightforward.

If you missed class you'd immediately get behind. I learned most of the content in class. He required a textbook but the readings weren't as helpful as his lectures. Lots of listening to music, prepare to listen to stuff on repeat if you want an A. Listen memorize listen = A.

Professor Hinckley was great! Music 101 was very interesting and informative, without being stressful. It was made clear exactly what you needed to know for a test. Make sure to know the songs you're supposed to, and you should do very well. I didn't even need to take notes. I would definitely recommend! I would also take from him again.

Professor Hinckley is a great, talented, funny guy. I enjoyed his class, but made the mistake of taking the 1 term version instead of the full semester version, which meant I had 2 3 hour evening lectures a week. There is a lot of memorization involved, but other than that this class is not too difficult.

Professor Hinckley is awesome. Probably the most knowledgeable professor I've had at BYU. He is extremely well-rounded and cultured and I really appreciated that. You don't need to get the textbook to get an A if you study for the tests. I was pleasantly surprised.

Prof. Hinckley was a pretty good professor. If you're in his MUS101 class, DO THE LISTENING ASSIGNMENTS! I can't emphasize that enough, it's the only way you'll pass. He's flexible if you have an emergency come up and will extend deadlines for some things which is awesome. You can tell he really does try his best and loves what he teaches

Very nice guy and makes the class as fun as it can be for non-music majors. Don't buy the textbook, just pay attention in class and do the listening assignments and you'll ace the tests. Do the extra credit, it's super easy. Honestly, if you don't get an A in this class, that's on you. Prof. Hinkley makes this class very simple.

Professor Hinckley is AMAZING! He's very knowledgeable and makes the lectures interesting and fun. He's probably my favorite professor I've had. Homework consists of reading and listening but honestly you could get by without doing the readings.

This professor is one of my favorites. He prepares you very well in lectures, study guides, and reminders. He constantly is reminding us of when things are due, tells you word for word what to look for on the exams, and makes lectures enjoyable. Do need to study well for exams for you have to memorize the info, and write good notes in class.

Professor Hinckley is incredible! I took the class as a general and, as someone with a heavy background in music, expected an easy but boring A. I was pleasantly surprised though-- it was still an easy A, but the lectures were entertaining and I learned tons! Professor Hinckley is very insightful and passionate about what he does. Highly recommend!

Dr. Hinckley's class was a blast. I'd recommend taking this class with a friend if possible; it was a lot of fun that way going to concerts together etc. He's super good about telling you what you need to know and all exams are online! Just do the listening exercises, short readings, and go to lecture and you'll be good to go! He's funny too.

Wow, wish I could take all my classes from Dr. Hinckley! He makes everything fun and interesting while still being organized and giving us the most.

Professor Hinckley is the GOAT. I took this class to fill my art general and professor Hinckely was so chill and funny. This class was really easy as long as you do the listening assignments and attend the review classes. Take music 101 from him!

This may have been one of the easiest classes I've taken. Honestly if you read the textbook you could skip lectures and still get an A. Though he is really funny and entertaining so I did go to the lectures. I really didn't like the class material because it's more of a music history class but it's an easy arts credit and he's amazing.

Prof. Hinckley was an amazing teacher. He explained everything well and was always willing to help. If you know anything about music, you'll be totally fine in this class. Gives good feedback on assignments and genuinely seems passionate about what he's teaching. Good intro class for music.

For homework, you read a few pages of the textbook and then go over it in class with him. Two midterms and a final, and the final is NOT comprehensive, which is awesome. You have to go to 6 concerts and 3 of them require a very short writeup, but it's really easy. He is an amazing, nice, funny professor! Take his class, it's really easy and fun.

Dr. Hinckley was a great professor! He had us mostly learn through reading the textbook and then showed us how to apply it in class which worked very well for the format of the tests. If you put in the work, this class is pretty easy and fairly rewarding.

Prof Hinckley is a funny guy and you can really tell he loves music and music history. I would definitely recommend him for the general art req. His textbook is important, but super expensive though.

Prof. Hinckley makes this intro music class an absolute breeze. Lectures are engaging, and with the help of unstuckstudy ai and the free textbook, acing the tests is a piece of cake. Definitely an easy arts credit!

Hinckley was a great teacher. His class was extremely easy for an arts credit, and the homework would take me 30 minutes max. The only problem I had was that lectures felt pointless. I skipped class often because he just goes over the reading, which I did for homework. Tests were nice because they were taken online, wherever, whenever.

Professor Hinkley is super passionate about music. You need to go to quite a few concerts, but many free options exist. The tests are easy, and the posted video study guides powerfully help you. You don't need to buy textbooks if you are attending class. Overall, the class is simple.

The BEST prof I've had at BYU by far. His passion and real-life stories about the material kept every lecture a blast, and they enforced the book reading. Minimal homework. Exams seemed daunting at first, but ended up being pretty easy. Super nice guy who wants you to succeed, and truly gave me a deeper passion and understanding for music.

Professor Hinckley was great! The tests really aren't that difficult and the assignments are really straightforward. I honestly didn't go to class very often but I took thorough notes on the reading, so I thought the class was really easy.

He offers extra credit and leaves clear feedback on assignments. I recommend taking the term option for this class because it seriously is that easy.

Dr. Hinckley is a great professor and this class was both interesting and super easy. I took the term class, which was faster paced, but it wasn't hard work. His recorded test reviews are pretty dang good for studying for the tests. Also, class attendance isn't mandatory which is great! 10/10 would recommend!

It's clear that Professor Hinkley knows what he's talking about, and he's very passionate about it. The whole goal of the class is to expose you to different styles and genres of music. Not too hard and he keeps it fun.

This class was seriously SO EASY and SO FUN! The lectures were very entertaining, I genuinely looked forward to them and Hinckley is so funny and does a great job at teaching the material! The course is also very organized and he has detailed instructions for all the assignments which is super nice. I highly recommend this professor and class!

I took this class just for a GE and was surprised how much I ended up enjoying it. His grading criteria is incredibly clear and if you follow the instructions you'll do well. He also grades things quickly and gives feedback on each assignment. He's a funny guy and he basically tells you whats on the test in class, so showing up is helpful.

I had pretty much zero interest in the class topic, but Prof. Hinkley made each class very interesting to the point that I enjoyed each one! I took the class in one term, so lectures were long, but the assignments were never overwhelming. Straight up, if you pay attention in class and do the listening assignments, you can ace every test.
