This was an extremely hard class--expect to live and breathe chemistry for a semester! But with Dr. Hansen's very flexible office hours, one can certainly survive the rough material.
Best professor ever! He's on the younger side (40 something i think) so more energetic, and he tries to make boring lessons interesting. He's really approachable and really makes an effort to get to know all his students. This is a tough class, but if you take him, he helps prepare you for tests. I loved how passionate he was about the material!
Dr. Hansen was a very good teacher! I was able to understand most of the concepts and he made the class extremely fun to go to. This class is very hard though, so if you are not willing to work at it, I suggest you not take it. On the other hand, if you are willing to work, I highly suggest Dr. Hansen!
Dr. Hansen is a fabulous professor and I learned a lot in his class. He tries to make the class interesting and he is a captivating speaker. I highly recommend taking Chem 111H from Dr. Hansen.
If you have to take this difficult test, he is the best to take it from. He is very willing to work with you.
CHEM 227 has a reputation for being extremely difficult, but Dr. Hansen tried to give everyone as much help as possible to make it easier. Dr. Hansen is an excellent professor and is always available for help. I highly recommend him for any class.
This is a very hard class but Prof Hansen is hilarious. He makes going to class fun even though it's hard. He is very willing to help and listen to the students. Over all he is a great professor. If you have to take 111H take it from him.
Hilarious guy, chats with students before lecture, and gives great demos on Explosion Wednesdays. He tries to help a lot but I get the feeling that with research and everything, he doesn't have much time for a freshman class. Takes years to email back. Go to reviews and study the review info the TA's give. They are the ones that will save you.
Dr. Hansen was fantastic. Probably my favorite professor of the entire semester. He is very fair and helpful, although the tests were very hard. You should have a good background in high school chemistry before you take this course. Do the homework well, because it ended up being more important to my grade than I thought.
Super nice guy who keeps you entertained during lecture. Do the reading before class and things will make more sense, definitely do the homework and writing assignments. He's really reasonable with homework and stuff. The tests are pretty intense.
Professor Hansen gives very good lectures, but the tests are unreasonably hard. What is actually on the test is not always consistent with what he says will be on it. Make sure you do the readings and homework assignments.
Oh man, Dr. Hansen is awesome! He the best Chemistry teacher you can take for 105, because he tells really wants to help the students. CHEM 105 IS NOT EASY, but as long as you memorize whatever he tells you and record when he says a question will be on a test you will do fine. Read the book and do the practice problems if you don't understand!
The way he taught chemistry was so simple. His teaching style is great. Not to mention he's hilarious, which made lectures easy. If you want a teacher who cares about you, take this guy. There is one caveat: if you get offended easily from politically incorrect comments, DO NOT take this class from Hansen. He makes them a lot.
Hansen on his own really isn't that hard of a teacher, it's the class that's difficult. But he is willing to meet with anyone to help out, and explains things again, one on one if you need it. Lectures are absolutely hilarious, I don't think I've ever had a funnier teacher
Hansen is a great professor! Just make the most out of all the resources he provides and the class really isn't that hard in my opinion. He's a pretty good lecturer but I think he's a lot better when you go into his office and talk to him one-on-one. Super helpful, smart guy.
Dr Hansen is really enthusiastic about Chemistry. His explanations make sense and the class provides plenty of resources for clarifications. Go to office hours, ask your TA's questions, go to review sessions, do the online practice problems, do the reading. It's a tough class, but it's manageable if you use your resources and go to class.
I loved Professor Hansen with a passion. I've never been a huge fan of chemistry, but he makes it so interesting and fun that I enjoyed the class a great deal. We had a pretty good amount of homework, but as long as you understand the concepts you can get it done quickly. Lots of grades are dropped to even out your average. Awesome guy/class.
Chemistry 105 is one of the most failed classes at BYU. This class takes a lot of time, but it is a 4 credit class. The lectures make up for the dedication and time put into class. Dr. Hansen is clear about what is graded, drops a lot of assignments, and offers help to students who need it. The relationship with the students to TA's is good too.
Dr. Hansen is amazing! He made Chem105 so much more bearable. He also is super good to work with outside of class and really wants you to make sure you know what you are doing. Take Hansen.
Hansen is awesome! His lectures are intriguing and well explained. He usually goes over easier problems in class than what's on the test. Chem 105 is overall a very hard and time consuming class.. but Hansen really does his best to help you understand and he's pretty funny.
Dr Hansen is a nice and funny enough guy, lectures are very entertaining. However, of all the professors teaching this class, his were far behind the others. We often were learning material for a test that opened the same day we were learning it. The textbook is useless. The exams are unnecessarily hard. But chem105 is hard on its own anyway.
Dr. Hansen is a funny guy. He entertains you during class although he can be very offensive at time. All of his lectures are powerpoint with VERY few practice problems. And when he does do practice problems, he flies through them assuming you know how to do it. I have seen many people raise their hands in class and he doesn't even acknowledge them.
TAKE THIS CLASS FROM DR. HANSEN. Hansen is hilarious. Chem can be boring, but he keeps it entertaining. His slides have lots of practice problems. He will tell you what you need to know/have memorized for the test. 3x5 notecard on final. Drops bunch of assignments. Replaces worst test grade w/ final test grade. Best prof. I've had a BYU
Dr Hansen will make you love Chemistry! He's the funniest professor by far (always has random comments and stories in the middle of lecture). There are worksheets and online homework due during the week, and the in class quizzes are easy. Tests are tough, but the practice tests he posts are very similar to actual tests. Totally recommend taking him
Prof Hansen gave good lectures and was pretty clear however the class was hard. The tests were pretty difficult and you had to spend several hours out of class studying and doing homework. If you put in the effort you should be fine but it definitely takes work.
Doctor Hansen doesn't give bad lectures, that is, if you already know what you are doing. The tests are super hard. Homework every Monday Wednesday and Friday on a ridiculous website. Iclicker quiz closes roughly 60 seconds into every class. The worst thing is the TAs. I don't know if he picks em, but they know nothing. There are no test reviews
Chem 105 may be dark, cold, and unforgiving, but Dr. Hansen is not. Great professor, really funny, cares about students. Chem 105 on the other hand is a monster.
Dr. Hansen is a hilarious, awesome professor! Chem 105 was incredibly hard and his tests are very difficult, but it is possible to get a good grade with lots of work. He has a very general drop policy, is helpful whenever possible, and cares about the students. Don't let a hard class turn you off from taking a class from Dr. Hansen.
Good grading curve and plenty of drops. He really wants you to pass if you try. That said CHEM 105 is the most failed classes @ BYU so it isn't easy and Hansen knows that. The class sucks but Dr. Hansen makes it enjoyable. I squeaked by with a C. Plan to send lots of time in this class. Uses I clickers which can be good and bad.
Best. Chem. Professor. EVER. I took chemistry from him my first semester and it was one of the best choices I made! He is extremely good at explaining difficult concepts and makes chemistry really fun. You definitely have to put in the work to get a good grade in the class. Do everything you can and talk to him about test questions you missed.
Brother Hansen is a great chem teacher! He makes class so interesting because of how passionate he is. The class is a lot of work, but if you do the smart work, recitation, and take notes in lecture you'll do fine. The tests are hard, but manageable.
Super funny, does a great job of reviewing material constantly, answering questions, and explaining concepts clearly. Lots of homework, probably almost an hour every day, but TA's go over everything in recitation, which is helpful. Daily quizzes count for attendance, and tests are reasonably hard but not tortuous.
He is very funny and teaches the material well. The class was hard, but that had more to do with the content than the teacher. There is lots of homework, but if you actually try on all of it, it usually pays off on the tests.
Dr. Hansen is a great professor. He makes lectures interesting and is very clear in what you need to know. There are daily clicker quizzes so go to class. You get to drop a couple of your lowest scores which is the best. 10/10 would reccomend
Teaches like if you are in pre-school and test like if you are a graduate student. My TA at the beginning of the semester did not know how to manage time, Dr. Hansen will at least let you check other TAs out. You can't fully review test making it hard to learn what you did wrong. Dumb website. Lectures not related to HW at all. Read the book.
Hansen is one of the best. Gives you plenty of chances to get a decent grade. My advice: do the online assignments. They're only worth 5 points but those babies add up and can make a whole letter grade of a difference. (only reasoned I passed the class). Very possible to get an A or B in this class, if you actually try and learn the stuff.
Best teacher that I have ever had, period. Teaches great lectures, is hilarious, and any girl would want to marry him. Watch out for LOTS of tough homework and really really hard tests. Definitely recommend being in a study group!
Dr. Hansen is so great! You definitely need to attend and do extra work and studying outside of class, but his lectures are entertaining and vety helpful. He and his TA's are very accessible and willing to help. Some of the "busy work" can be tedious but doing it absolutely helps you understand the concepts. Take this class from him!!
Dr. Hansen is a great professor. He really knows what he's talking about, and explains it in a simple way. If you don't understand don't be afraid to ask questions. He uses a lot of visual examples to show what he's teaching. He's hilarious. His tests will include everything you learned, so make sure to study up on the "insignificant" details.
Dr Hasen is a good professor. He is really engaging in lecture. Chem 105 is a difficult course no matter who you take it from, but he really cares and attendance isn't required but you do iClicker quizzes every lecture that are worth points (that you need!) Loved the professor just hated the course.
Dr. Hansen is a great professor. Any problems with the course that I had came because of how it is set up (as a weed out course). No avoiding that unfortunately. Do yourself a solid and pick Hansen for this class, you won't regret it.
Dr. Hansen is a great professor and really cares about his students success. He wants to help all students pass so take advantage of his office hours and TA's. Tests are really hard, but if you know how to work through practice problems and homework, you'll be fine. He is a solid choice.
Thank goodness for Dr. Hansen. Hes probably been the best professor Ive had so far! Hes engaging, he cares, and he knows his stuff. The material is difficult, but hes more than willing to help and actually cares how well his students do. I have a learning disability, and would have crashed and burned without his help.
You all know that Chem 105 is a weeder class. It's supposed to be like that. But it has to be done! Honestly I wouldn't have picked anyone else to teach me. Dr Hansen is my favorite professor at BYU so far! He is amazing at explaining, he is so funny, and he answers questions very well! If you have to take this class, take Hansen!!!!
Having taken CHEM106, I know that Professor Hansen did a very poor job in teaching CHEM105. We got through an entire powerpoint about 8 times that entire semester, and were always behind other CHEM105 classes (which all had the same tests). Dr. Hansen left for a week, and gave us TA's who would just read us the lecture. Would not take from him
No matter who you take this class from, it's going to be a lot of work. There's so much material to cover and not enough time to do so, but Prof. Hansen does a pretty good job at covering as much as possible. He's entertaining and willing to meet one on one. This class is not that hard if you put in the time and go to the TA lab.
Dr. Hansen was the best Chem 105 prof. I could imagine. He is very organized and excited about his lectures. He even has explosion Fridays which was a plus. It will be a hard class no matter who teaches it, but he is a great choice.
Sorry that you have to take Chem 105. The class is gonna be tough whoever you take it from, but Hansen makes it bearable. He is funny and good at explaining tough concepts. He basically gives you the answer to most Iclicker quizzes and he blows stuff up on Fridays.
This class is hard, but from what I heard from other classes, Hansen is one of the best professors to take it from. His lectures were a little boring sometimes but he put in funny stories to make it a little better. There is a lot of reading to do, smartwork, and problem sets each week, but that is what is expected for Chem 105.
Dr. Hansen is very intelligent and HILARIOUS! This class sucks but he makes it entertaining. Online hw is stupid and crashes all the time. Paper hw due every recitation. Labs every week. Go to as many reviews as possible and take advantage of your TAs. You have 4 tests and they were all trash. Do the reviews and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Dr. Hansen made CHEM 105 as interesting as it could be. The class itself is just really hard no matter which professor you have, so don't take him thinking it will be easy. I had a really good TA who also helped a bunch. The tests are with 70% of your grade, and they are made to confuse you. Hard class, but he made it better than it could have been
Very hard class, but bright and fun teacher. He is THE best option for this class. I think he was a great teacher though the material and concept are very challenging. I recommend in part b/c of how good he is and in the other part b/c of how much other students said they struggled b/c how rough it was to understand from the other professors.
I took it online and never actually met Dr. Hansen. But this is the most organized online class I've ever taken. If you're motivated enough to take online classes, this is a really solid choice. Lots of other assignments help the tests to be weighted less. Flexible and I feel like I really learned a lot!
Dr. Hansen is such a great professor. His lectures are always fun and lighthearted, he is so funny, I loved them. He also is very clear in how he teaches and is always willing to re-explain during lecture to help you understand. Chem 105 is a hard class and requires work, there's no getting around that, but Dr. Hansen made it enjoyable! 10/10
Dr. Hansen is awesome! Like Chem105 sucks, but he helps to make it at least bearable. Hes also great at teaching clearly but in an entertaining way. Hes focused on helping people understand instead of just rushing through the material.
Professor Hansen is a great teacher, clear, concise, and understandable. Gives a lot of Homework, but the problem sets really help you learn the material and prepare for the tests. The Tests are like the problems sets, but difficult nonetheless, and since they make up most of your grade, you will need to study A LOT. With work, an A is achievable.
This was my favorite class at BYU so far. I feel that Dr. Hansen provided me with every resource needed to succeed. To get a solid grade I recommend doing every textbook reading plus textbook problems, attend every review possible, review lecture slides, (I think taking notes is a waste of time) and redo problem sets. Dr. Hansen was excellent.
Professor Hansen teaches the material in a way that I could understand. Chem 105 is a hard class with any professor. Be ready to spend 10 or more hours a week on this class. The only downside is that he moves through material very quickly. The TA's help with that though. He is a funny professor and loves saying, "Guys, gender neutral.".
Chem 105 is a difficult class. Hansen's lectures are really helped. He is very engaging and honest. He will repeat and emphasize key concepts. So, you know what you will be tested on. If you have to take Chem 105, take it from him. He is one of the best. Also! Make sure you like your TA. They can make or break the class.
If you have to take CHEM 105, take it from Hansen. This course is hard no matter what professor you get, but he makes it entertaining and he cares about his students. A lot of hw you have to do, but it's good practice for the tests. The problem sets helped more than the smartworks. Some people didn't get good TAs, but I did so I got a lot of help.
Hansen is an amazing teacher and I recommend him if you're anxious about Chem 105. He knows the material very well, jokes around a lot, and teaches simply but fast. The Chem 105 tests are harder than the examples he goes over in class, so be prepared.
Dr. Hansen is a great professor. He moves very quickly through material though. Chem 105 is difficult no matter who you take it from. Textbook reading and utilizing your TA will save you. There is a ton of HW and if you do it all, you can manage an okay grade. Expect to spend a TON of time studying for this class.
HANSEN IS THE BEST!!! He moves quickly, so be prepared, but he really cares about students, answers questions, keeps lectures light and will take the time to slow it down if needed. I also had an awesome TA for the class, so it was easier for me to grasp concepts. Use a lot of time out of class to study and DO NOT SKIP LECTURE OR LAB
Hansen is an amazing professor! He moves really fast, but checks for understanding and loves answering questions. Generous drop policy. Do the reading before class if you struggle with concepts so you know what's going on. Never skip lab or lecture and make sure you have a study group and you will do great in this class!
Dr. Hansen is a great teacher! The class is super hard, but Hansen explains the concepts well and gives you all the resources to do well in the class. Definitely the best CHEM105 teacher at BYU!
Chem 105 is a hard class, but if you have to take it, trust me: YOU WANT HANSEN! He loves chem and genuinely wants you to love it too. His lectures are interesting and understandable, and he cares about his students! This class takes a lot of work, but if you do the homework, go to the TA reviews, and take the practice tests, you'll ace the exams.
Any Chem 105 class is hard, but Dr. H is great! Honestly if you are willing to put in the work, an A is possible. If you are willing to pay attention to the lectures, do ALL the homework, go to TA reviews (which I would strongly recommend), and study you should be fine. (Also if you plan to taking future chem classes, then this won't be too bad :)
Chem 105 is brutal but Dr. Hansen was great. I really liked lecture and this was while we were on zoom. Our class scored much higher than the other chem classes on the first two tests. The third test was brutal because it was a weird format. If you have to take this class Hansen is great.
Prof. Hansen is awesome, funny, explains things clearly. I'd already done CHEM101 and 285 but this class was still tough! That's the way CHEM105 is though. Graded on iClickers during class, Smartworks, recitation problem sets, labs, 3 midterms and a final (which can replace one midterm). If you don't get a good TA just go to a different recitation.
Hard to say much about Prof. Hansen himself. It seems like he isn't very involved in the educating, as he used pre-recorded lectures from another professor, and then the assignments were all through other websites. He is very accessible and helpful if you have a question or problem. Tests are hard and homework is daily! Not an easy class.
He did nothing the entire semester. He made us watch pre-made videos and if we needed help he made us go to the TAs. He also openly said some of the material was too easy and he went out of his way to make the exams a lot harder. I wouldnt trust the rating on here.
Ended up being his TA over the span of three years. This guy is solid. With departmental exams, his classes consistently scored higher than those of other professors. He teaches it almost every semester (at least up until Apr 2021), so he can go pretty quick, but everything in the class is set up to benefit you. It takes work, but you can do it.
I had to take this class 4 times to pass. It was so hard.
CHEM 105 is inherently tough, but he definitely didn't do anything to make it easier. He seemed very uninvolved with the actual teaching. I don't even know what he looks like because he only had us watch pre-recorded lectures from another professor made in the 90s and told us to go to the TAs for help.
This class was taken online during COVID but was run completely by the TAs. The professor wasn't reachable at all and all of the video recordings looked like they were from the late 90s. That being said, I seemed to have an easier experience in his class than my friends who had other professors
You could could give this class everything youve got and still score low on the exams. Theres also so much busy work that you dont have a lot of time to understand the concepts. Hes funny tho
I personally don't feel like it matters which professor you take from for Chem 105 because every class gives out the same homework, exams, and labs. I did enjoy taking from Professor Hansen because his class was entertaining and he was really funny. These tests are just really hard, so good luck!
Super funny, really bright, and a very respected professor! Tough course, but Dr. hansen grades fairly and is very helpful when you reach out.
Chem 227 was awesome - probably one of my favorites. Dr. Hansen is a very entertaining lecturer and really cares about helping his students figure out their experiments and grades. This looks like a hard class, and it kinda is, but it's so fun and way less work outside of class than Chem 113.
This class is ridiculously hard for no reason. A huge portion of the class did not pass. That being said, Dr. Hansen taught it the best he could. If you MUST take chem 105, take it with him. Work crazy hard, pray you get a good TA, and you will be fine.
Honestly really enjoyed his class and lectures. While it's hard, it's definitely possible to get an A. Tough class but Dr. Hansen is the right prof for it.
I worked as a TA for this professor and two others (Asplund and Woodfield). Hansen is by far the best option. His lectures are informative and actually helpful. Your TA is your best resource; find a good one if yours is iffy. Readings aren't really necessary, all the tests come from the problem sets and practice exams.
The chem department is praying on our downfall. Dr. Hansen is super awesome tho. He is obviously an expert in his field and answers your questions thoroughly. There is a high volume of work and exams are worth 70% of your grade. I failed my first test, but kicked into gear thereafter. You can get that A. Just don't get caught off guard.
I was a TA for this professor, and he is definitely the best chem professor for general chemistry! He is hilarious, kind, and communicates well with the class. His lectures are organized and are applicable to the exams. Chem 105 is overall a tough class, but as a TA, I would for sure say that he is the guy to take it from!
Listen guys, (gender neutral) Chem 105 is a difficult class no matter who you take it from, but Dr. Hansen is a great option. His lectures are engaging and he is really good at explaining things multiple times so they make sense. He's so passionate and funny. If you need to take Chem 105 and he's teaching it, take it from him.
Classes were entertaining! He is passionate about chemistry. There was a lot of homework outside of class, but grades are mostly based on exam performance. Difficult and heavy class, but Professor Hansen was good at making it fun! I liked that he did lots of practice examples for harder concepts.
Take from him!!! He is so good at explaining. Chem 105 in general is designed to be a hard course but he made it better for sure. Loved him. So friendly and easy to talk to. I attended office hours frequently and he took the time to explain tough subjects.
Dr. Hansen was good enough, but he is definitely one of those professors with an ego. He made concepts seem totally manageable and then the tests were super difficult. However, CHEM 105 was not as bad as everyone says it is. The final is super hard and takes a long time, but if you put in a good amount of effort into this class you should be fine.
Things seemed to make sense in lecture, but by the time I got to the homework, it was like I'd never seen it before. Good lectures, but every once in a while made a (very slightly) off-color joke. Homework consists of Problem Sets (find Jeremy Halversen on YouTube!! LIFE. SAVER.) and Smart work (digital) assignments. Class is very hard but doable.
The chem department rotates on teaching 105, so if you ever have the opportunity to take a class from Dr. Hansen, TAKE IT! This class is really rigorous by nature, but if you are willing to put in the time for reading, studying and attendance, you will do great. He gives amazing lectures and is very engaging so it's never a bore.
Dr. Hansen has amazing energy and was always to upbeat while teaching. His slides were nice to reference, but I wish he did more on the board practice. There is just so much homework and the tests are hard. Chemistry is hard.
