Horrible, horrible teacher. He's a grad student and he really doesn't know how to teach. He doesn't explain things yet expects you to know them the next day. Don't take him if you can prevent it! Might be easier for you to take it in the summer!!
Kinda a funny guy but sort of hard. I would rate him as "neutral" I didn;t think he was any harder than zeilinsky who also teaches college algebra.

hes great. i hate math with a passion barely passed every math class ive ever been too- but if you take the time to get one on one help i guarentee youll get it. nice guy, knows what hes doing, and legitamately cares about the student. great dry sence of humor too.
hes an alrite teacher. hes one of those people who is really smart but doesnt have very much common sense, he kinda forgets that WE dont kno the material and kinda jus rambles on, but if u need help, he does explain, mostly in his office hours.&hes kinda funny, like NERDY funny...lol i like it though! haha!
he explains things well and gives you easy quizes about the problems gone over the class before and is willing to help and not make you feel like an idiot and hes really cute XD
He is an alright teacher, but would not recommend him. He teaches the class as if we should already know what he's teaching. Test are not multiple choice,and 27 students failesd his first test out of a class of 35. Trust me,he may look good, but you will be sorry when you get your quizzes and test back. Avoid his class if possible.
Do not take his class if you can avoid it. He is hard to follow because he his fast paste and always wants everyone to come to office hours. It's as if he wants to teach his lectures in his office or something. I don't get it.

Okay teacher, but you have to really pay attention and stay on top of the homework (which is a lot). If you find yourself looking at the answers in the back of the book often, Knittel didn't do a good job teaching the material for that day (which is frequently).
worst teacher i have ever had a tx state! he assumes you know everything and it seems like he almost tries to confuse you. he said he doesnt like the class average to be higher than a 70 be that means his class is to easy. he is really nerdy and likes to do math problems and video games for fun. He will help you if you come to his office
I had no problem with this class. It is required you have to do some work at home but it is a math class what would you expect? Prof Knittel will give you the added attention needed in office hours and this is the first math class I truly grasped.

its a pretty easy class. explains things really well but has a dry sense of humor that is still funny...he's a nerd. lol. if you do the homework, that is pretty easy, you'll have no problem with the quizzes.
Do not take this professor! He talks way to fast and moves at a rapid pace and if you don't keep up then its too bad he doesn't wait for anyone. He expects for you to already know the material. I WOULD NOT TAKE HIM!
do every homework, its a must. you'll do great on quizzes. quizzes and attendance very, very important. go to slac 2 a week and you A's this class. fall behind and you'll fail. He is a fantastic person, he recognizes hard work. you will learn. you will earn your grade.
One of those rare, most excellent teachers. He wants you to learn and has the tools to teach you anything and makes the time for your questions with high availability and lots of patience. You will learn algebra if you take him. Dry sense of humor with no judgment about your skills.
Math is a subject you have to be diligent with. This class is no exception. He's clear, organized & helpful - even interesting (for math). Quiz every day to prove attendance, daily homework is opt. Test clearly represent the material covered. I like him and found him to go to great lengths to be fair in testing and in procedure. I recommend him!!
There was an assumption that the information should be easy, and it was not explained much. For those of us (ME) that absolutely despise math, there was not enough concern for our better understanding of the subject. It was gone over once, and that was it. He acted as if it was taking from his time if we asked for extra examples.
I absoulutely despised this class. For someone who is apprehensive about math (me) he did not seem to care about my welfare as a student. Very sarcastic and rude in the classroom. If you need an second explanation of the lesson I wouldn't reccommmend Knittel.
He's at ACC now. His material differs from the text book, and tests are done in class not at the tsting center (Pain in the ass due to time constraints). Everything in the class is earned no free rides.
Tough class but he does have some humor that makes the boringness of math go by a little easier. Grade is earned and everything done in class and for hw is straight out of the book.
Hard class, but if you take notes it wont be so bad. He curves alot which is a very good thing, i managed to pull an A. Just take notes and do the work and you should be good.

Must go to class. You will take lots of notes. Tons of homework that is for a grade. Few hours of homework a week minimal. Tests are fairly difficult. No curve, no extra credit. I would recommend looking for an easier professor to start with, especially if your hands on learner. Reads from book, that's where notes come from
He gave 3 opportunities for extra credit, and he also curved the first 2 test. He is a great professor and makes learning fun! At first i thought he was going to be a bad professor because he was very remedial, but it works in your favor in the long run as the subjects get harder. He teaches the fundamentals in every subject, gives great examples!

AWESOME professor. Loved his class. I had not taken a Math class in YEARS and I was so worried that I would not understand anything. He was wonderful. Clear, concise, LOTS of examples. He WANTS you to learn. Cannot write enough good things about him.

Class wasn't too bad. Offered extra credit opportunities which helped me out. Even failed a test horribly, and still got an A in the class. Take advantage of his office hours and do the homework. Pretty ok guy to talk to also.

Very good prof and has an awesome sense of humor. Give a lot of extra credit and it isn't very difficult to recieve an A. Also give 2.5 points extra credit for attending every class.
Best math professor at TX state! Made class interesting, knew the material and can explain it well. To pass you have to do the homework, and come to class! His classes will be hard but he makes it fun and easy to learn the material from the way he teaches. Take him! If you didn't take bus calc 1 and aren't strong in math I advise taking it first.

Great professor. Has a very dry sense of humor that some won't get. Approaches math in a unique way that makes it enjoyable. If you do the homework and study, the test shouldn't be too difficult. Gives extra credit, and is a fair grader.
Great Professor, made me actually care about calc. Quizes are a homework check, provided an extra lab once a week, just for a little extra help, and tests are short. Mr Knittel was good at making class go by easily by making the topic relative to real world instances and he had some pretty good jokes!
He is a very smart man and does have extra credit opportunities but honestly pre cal is a hard course. He explains the material in a very complicated way and gives a lot of homework. He does provide opportunities to help your grade but I wouldn't recommend him. You have to study outside of class and keep up with homework if you want an A.
He's not too great at helping you with the homework without ridiculing you for not understanding. SLAC isn't always helpful, so not having a helpful professor made this course much more difficult. You can't use a graphing calculator and his exams were very tricky. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Not everyone will take to his jokes (although I thought they were pretty funny). His teaching style is easy to understand. Keep up with homework for the quizzes, by doing so, you'll score higher marks on the tests. He drops hints about what's going to be on each, so pay attention. Attendance can pull you up a letter grade, so go to class! Cool guy
He explains the material in unique ways and cracks a few jokes along the way. Attendance is not mandatory but you get massive extra points for attending. Take his class if you want someone unconventional and cool. Even his TA said he's the best teacher he's worked for.
He is available during office hours if you need help but honestly, I didn't find him to be helpful. In fact he was very rude and made me feel like an idiot for asking him questions. He assigns a ton of homework and if you don't do it, you won't pass the class. Also his tests are very tough and I barely passed them. I don't recommend him to anyone.
My class struggled a lot in understanding him, and he does explain things a little weirdly, but they also never asked him questions. He's a good teacher and is pretty funny in a nerdy way
He is the best teacher I have had. Makes it so simple, and as long as you put the work in you will get an A. Final helps your grade so much.
Knittel is awesome! Lectures are very clear and he's not afraid to work some of the longer homework problems in the book towards the end of class, this helped my understanding of pre-cal a lot. Gave a lot of extra credit, and a regular amount of homework for a math class. He wants you to do well and be ready for calculus. He's big on attendance.
Very strict on attendance, very hard to understand because he does a lot of proofs and it is hard to tell where he is going with it, purposely talks until the last minute of class ALWAYS even if the lesson is over which can make it confusing because it is as if he is going in circles, tests are not too bad if you know what you're doing.
Lots of homework but it makes you put in the effort into understanding the material. Lectures can be very confusing but he is always willing to help. Nice guy. Made good grades on quizzes, not that great on exams and still managed to get an A. Lots of extra credit towards the end of the semester so stick to it and don't drop!
Do not take this course. Homework is assigned after every lecture in tremendous amounts, attendance is mandatory. He lectures fast and expects you to understand content off of one lecture per section and homework. Not ideal if you have other classes to worry about which everyone does. Did i mention this was only BASIC COLLEGE ALGEBRA?
This class was definitely hard for me. I had to quit my job in order to be able to attend office hours and optional labs. Started the semester expecting to fail and came out with a B. He saw that I cared about my grade so he cared. If you don't make an effort, he does not feel sorry for you. HW is LONG af! But do it or you won't pass!
Yikes! Great prof, sometimes comes off rude. Its not intentional, but you have to work for your grade if you aren't naturally good at math. Tries to help your grade as much as possible, quizzes are your HW. Please dont take this class if your ego is too big to get help. Has optional labs, all in all, do HW and study everynight and you'll do fine
Professor Knittle is tough but fair. I've never really liked any of my math teachers until him. He is funny, inspirarional, easy to understand and makes math more interesting. Trig is was tough for me. I'm glad he was my teacher. I would take a math class again with him.
Best math teacher I've ever had, if you honestly do the work I don't see how you can fail, especially as he keeps it interesting, gives out bonus point assignments and free points for good attendance, and has an extra optional lab every week, which is extremely helpful as often times the Lab Instructor is the one who will confuse you.
I found this course to be very challenging. I spent 10-15 hours outside of class studying for exams/quizzes which was awful. Exams are VERY tough and you will not pass if you don't go to class and do your homework. He is intelligent and teaches the class as if you are too so don't except easy problems or short cuts to problems. Very difficult class
Difficult class, but if you go to his office hours and optional labs he will help you!! Not only does he walk you through the problems you don't understand, he might even give you some extra bonus points for trying. Make sure you don't procrastinate on the homework though because your homework problems are your quizzes.
Absolutely loved his lectures, really explains why and how we get the formulas and answers. Test and quizzes were not hard as long as you did the homework and went to class. Would definitely take him again in another math course.
super hard class but definitely doable. he's willing to explain everything w/o making anyone feel dumb in class/in office hours. lots of HW, but if you go to his office hours it will help so much. his quizzes are all questions from HW and you use HW on the quizzes, so as long as you do the HW the quizzes will be easy. attendance mandatory!!
This Precal class was 10x harder than I ever expected, but Knittel taught it well. His lecture style and personality take some getting used to, but it worked really well for me. Grades tests hard, but over half the material comes from homework problems (not graded hw). Attendance is kind of extra credit, but if you miss a lecture you'll fall behind
At first, I really wanted to hate him. The first exam annihilated me even though I felt prepared. The solution? Do the homework (like, REALLY do it). Math involves practice, and if you don't like Knittel it's probably because you don't put forth the effort. He cares if you do. Ended precal with a grade I'm proud of and better study skills.

He is an awful professor. He knows the content clearly but does not know how to teach it. He explains the content during lecture and does very little examples, and expects a lab instructor who he meets on the first day of class to teach. He does not provide reviews, but roughly 40 HW problems per section. Do not take this class.
Knittel is the man! Class is tough, but he explains concepts very clearly and will stay after class to answer any questions. There is a TON of homework, but it really will prepare you for the tests. And he is hilarious.
Absolutely awful. It's clear he does not care. He shows up, gets paid, and leaves. His TA grades and teaches. He obviously knows the content of the class, but in the 50 minute period where you actually see him, he rambles on about theory and nonsensical conceptualizations. The class moves very fast, tons of homework, comprehensive final.
Honestly, the class was extremely difficult. Very time consuming, lots of homework, and DIFFICULT exams which are the bulk of your grade. His style of teaching is different- will ramble and get to the point last second. Very confusing .
Knittel was alright. He gave A LOT of hw but its stuff that you can use on his quizzes so its not too bad. He also gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit, and is very willing to help during his office hours or after through email. His tests make sense and are honestly pretty easy as long as you know the course work and concepts.

Clear & interesting lectures. Be prepared for a lot of homework after every class. Daily quizzes based on completed homework which count to your final grade. Some of the material is tricky which may affect test scores but JK gives excellent feedback, is easily accessible after class and is a very fair grader. Lots of extra credit opportunities
Thought this class was ridiculously hard when I started it, but if you apply yourself and do ALL the homework you'll be fine. Make sure you actually understand the homework. I found that making your own study guide helps on the exams.

Extremely tough. Couldn't focus on my other classes and barely made it out of this one. Chose a different teacher, who is not as strenuous .
In my opinion he is very hard to understand. There is a quiz or test every single Thursday. Attendance is a grade. There is some extra credit so take it. He does not give out any test reviews or worksheets. He also doesn't use the grade book or upload grades so you have to calculate your own grade. Take a professor who is easier.
No reviews for test, No formula sheet, tons of homework. The material itself isn't too hard if you apply yourself but he definitely doesn't make it easier. He definitely knows his stuff and I have to admit is a decent prof.. Just the grading isn't beneficial from a student perspective. Made up quizes along the way and experimented alot. DONT RECOMM
Do not take Knittel unless you have to. His class is extremely difficult and he really isn't that good at explaining it. He's also very cocky and comes off rude.
Pretty good professor lecture wise, do all of the homework and the class will be easier. It is A LOT though. I am fine with math and it was a nightmare. Do NOT take during summer, if you have no job or other class you might be fine. Many students already failed 2417 and were close to or failing again. Very generous on partial credit grading.
MATH1314/Knittel "Quicker" pace curriculum, but provides many opportunities to succeed and cares about you passing. If you want an easy course or don't intend on higher level math, maybe find another ("easier") prof. Get study group/partner early, ask questions, don't slack, and you'll be fine. The course will help build a strong math foundation.
He knows the subject but not how to teach it. He makes things harder than they need to be. Doesnt like to give examples but likes to use confusing theory related explanations. The stuff you see in class doesnt really look like your hw. I basically had to teach myself through connect math. Seems like a nice enough guy but dont take him.
Professor Knittel was an ok professor. A lot of the things he taught, I already knew or didn't have to study as much but I've always been good in math. He broke a lot of things down for people who didn't understand. The only thing I didn't like was he was very cocky and not someone I would visit for office hours. He was just very nonchalant.
Most of my beef was with the class, not the professor. My only issue with him was that he over-taught. That is, you think you have a solid understanding of a topic and he would take it upon himself to "break it down" further with the goal of helping you truly understand the mechanics, but really it just became more confusing.
If you have a wife, kids, dependents, etc. Prepare to say farewell. For the duration of Knittel's class you will not have time for your loved ones. Your family now consist of your calculator, textbook, and of course Papa Knittel.
He's awesome. I failed Calculus and retook it with him. He notices effort so don't slack off and be the person moping about how "I wont ever USE calculus". He wants you to leave the course knowing what you leaned. He gave me an incredible large amount of curves. EXERY EXAM we all got 10 points in case he makes mistakes. really great guy/professor!
He gives out a lot of homework but it is all online and is very similar to the quizzes which are also online. I studied the quizzes the night before each exam and got an A on all of them. He will always tell you how many questions will be on the exam and specifically how many questions from each section.
Professor Knittel was a great person but not a great teacher. He was funny and told a lot of stories about his personal life. But College Algebra is already hard enough, and he did simple questions in class. When you go home to do the homework (assigned after every class), the homework is more thorough than the problems he solved in class.
This class is lecture heavy but that's expected with any math class. Professor Knittel is very knowledgable about college algebra and recommend him. If you do the homework and practice those questions, youll do good on the test. He drops lowest quiz grades and the will higher tests grades if you do well on the final.
Knittel told everyone there would be a practice exam for the final and then decided not to post one and didn't tell the whole class until the day before the exam. He also told the class to study the quizzes as they would be good practice, then proceeded to build the exam with qiestions from the homework. I got an F on the final because of that.
He's super cool and understanding, but you learn a different thing every day and don't get a chance to really understand what you're learning. Most of the time, the homework is over something you talked about 1-2 weeks ago, so it's hard to grasp the whole concept. On the other hand, he always answers questions and is super chill and understanding.

He will give you the hardest questions on tests that you have never seen on homeworks. The class is extremely fast pass and required abt 4-5 hours a day of work not including class time. No reason to take him find someone better
Lecture videos that nobody watches, you are graded on them and they have unfixed audio glitches 50 note cards due each test, total of 200 The day AFTER the last day to withdrawal he changed how hes grading the course to do some weird a** wacky curving because nobody can pass his extremely needlessly hard exams. Lots of blank papers on the last one

Every class there is a quiz that counts for participation. If you do not go to class you will receive a zero. I went to tutoring and spent most of my effort and time on this class. I would not recommend him as a teacher especially if you struggle in math.

Failed this course with another professor and got a B with dr knittel. Turning in notecards before each exam is worth 10% of you grade which is a free 10 points. Good lectures and gives you hints to what will be on the test which is super helpful so go to lecture. The bad reviews are probably because this class is hard.
Don't think that this class will be easy if you took it in high school, this class is 10x harder and you need to be on your A game 100% of the time. This class has a INSANE amount of homework and needs hours of studying for tests or you are guaranteed to fail. Pay attention and go to every lecture or you will be sorry you didn't.
Professor Knittel was is one of my favorite teachers. He is very engaging and brings excitement to every class. If you can use your time wisely, and spend the time to take good notes, as he teaches in a flipped classroom style, you should do fine in his class. He teaches in a way that is helpful for visual learners, encouraging the use of drawing.
If you're looking for a handout, he's not the professor for you. He has recorded lectures you watch before class, to maximize class time going over examples. He gives hints on what to expect for exams, the exams are on lab days, so you have more time. Each exam is broken up into a calculator and a no calculator portion. Overall great professor!
I really didn't realize how great of a professor he was until a semester later. Yes, he is a tough grader and makes you work for your grade but that's how you will learn the material! Now, having a lazy professor (who literally teaches off slides) makes me realize how good I had it! I wish I had him as my calc professor. Knittel really was the goat
Professor Knittel was better in the beginning of the semester. I truly believe that he thinks he was a helpful/good professor, but often times he talked circles around everyone in the room. Often times he gave us examples of what would be on the midterms he gave, but none of that translated to the final, which had questions we never went over.
Although attendance isn't mandated it is mandatory if you want to understand the content he teaches. He waits for no one, you will need to catch up on your own. Although he does say that he is flexible he doesn't really help even if you ask for it. Lectures are dreadful but they help for the tests. Homework and quizzes are also crucial for tests.
Course requires a *lot* of work, but much of it exists to pad grades. Video notes and notecards are free 100s. Failing exams is expected and not a death sentence. He likes to go through proofs rather than presenting formulas on their own. Doesn't look down on students for not knowing concepts from previous courses and is willing to re-explain.
Lots of homework to help pad grading, but the grading is also very generous. Provided plenty of opportunity to make up content. Would take again.
Lectures were all over the place and hard to grasp concepts. On top of homework you're required to make flashcards that don't even help on tests. Asking questions just makes him talk to you like you're stupid instead of trying to help understand. All around regret taking his course. I had perfect attendance and hired a private tutor for this course
Dr. Knittel assigns way too much busywork making studying for tests challenging as you have a lot of other things to do first. If you do study for the tests, you'll still struggle as he gets some of the hardest questions on the test. The final is also all open-response which makes it a nightmare to do. Overall, don't take this class.

It does not help that the test is not similar to the notecards plus no study review... bad lecturer too.
If you pay attention in class and ask questions about the stuff you don't understand, you will pass this class with an A. He was very willing to explain anything that anyone asked, even if you were supposed to learn it a while ago. Even if you don't understand it in class you can go to office hours and try to understand it then.
The lectures were easy to understand in class (most of the time), but when I tried to do the homework later, it had very little of the lecture material on it. The notes are not posted online so if you miss a class there is no way to get the lecture material. There are no test reviews, so good luck studying only using the homework.
For my first year here this was the best professor i think i could have gotten, You would have to try really hard to fail as he gives us multiple chnaces for extra credit. Great professor!!!
this class is so much more difficult than it needed to be. He would teach the basics of how to do something and then leave it up to you to figure out how to do much more complex problems on the homework. Tests were extremely difficult and have a 57% average.
Professor Knittel is very helpful if you are struggling in the course, he wants you to succeed and to try. He give lots of extra credit opportunities which is really nice. He does do quizzes for attendance but they are about the lecture so along as you take notes and pay attention you'll be good.
Prof Knittel does not provide any sort of review for any exam and even the final. You are expected to simple review your previous homework assignments to prepare yourself for exams. He is very blunt and straight forward - take that how you want.

Whoever tells you to take this class hates you and wants you to suffer. This is the only class in college I have ever failed. He hand grades all 175 tests and works each question out by hand to see how you got the answer and if he doesn't like how you did it or dont show your work you fail. He also stares at you during tests to "intimidate" you.
This class is the worse I've taken. His lectures are unorganized and doesn't relate what he covers in class to what's on the test. He is a tough grader and unorganized on top of that. I know half the people in the class were failing you will have to do a lot of outside studying and still may not even pass.quizes at beginning of every class. Just no
Professor Knittel is underrated. He teaches really well and explains everything so clearly. If you show up to lecture and lab 90 percent of the time, it's an easy A. It is quiz and homework heavy but they never take longer than an hour. If you want to pass this hard course, definitely take Professor Knittel.
This Professor did not give any reviews out. We had a quiz every single day we had class. His notes are all over the place. He can sometimes be really hard to understand, and he just repeats the same thing over and over and expects you to understand. He can be quite mean sometimes. There is also no extra credit
Very tough class. Quiz everyday there is not an exam. No test reviews and notes cannot be used on anything. Recommend if you actually want to learn (you cannot cheat in this course). Very rewarding when you succeed and he wants to see you succeed. Can be very blunt or dry but over all good professor.
In lectures he is very philosophical. He will spend a majority of the class showing the process of getting a formula rather than applying it. There are quizzes everyday so do not miss class. There are no test reviews so you are expected to print about 100 pages of homework to study for the final which only a little bit of it will be on the final.
Calculus is a hard class, and Professor Knittel is up front with you about that. However, he also teaches the material well and gives you a path to success if you are willing to put in the work. Take Professor Knittel's class if you want to learn
This is the worst professor at Texas state. Do Not take him he doesn't even teach he wants you to “figure it out”. Absolutely no help at explaining when you ask a question he just says “ try to figure out the first step” with absolutely no guidance or teaching. Expects students to already know concept. If I could give 0 stars I would.
Doesn't do reviews for exams, expects you to go over ALL the homework's that are long and have a ton of different questions. Expects you to already know the material and just “figure it out” with a group of students with absolutely no explanation. Doesn't even go over the problem before making you “figure it out “DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
HE IS VERY FUNNY AND HE TEACHES IN A WAY THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE NUMBERS FLOWING!
this man actually speaks in riddles. when learning calculus he made it almost impossible to grasp the concepts. all tests are free response and graded very harshly. quiz every class.
