(Political Economy of Crime) Jarret is an easy going young guy who likes the Simpsons, and lives on the left wing! He's test are easy, and so is the final paper. You can get a B with minimal effort. Although if you want the A you have to bust your butt.
requires alot of reading, very boring lectures, there's a paper requirement on a book you have to read on your own on top of your normal reading. By the way, that book sucked.
This class was the first class I took at CSUF and also the class I learned the most in. His lectures make Criminal Theories very clear. The text he used is pretty dense, but has great information. The book by McCall was also fairly good. Funny guy! Talk a lot in this class! Not for shy people.

Interesting lectures (he makes you think really deep-but you have to be ready for it), dull reading, hard exams, the final was really difficult with no study guide!
dont get me wrong, the guy is cool, makes some good points in his lectures. his lectures do get old after a few classes, but u do want to go to class because you won't understand the book. he gives tons of reading, which is BEYOND boring. tests are extremely hard, and tricky in a way, he doesn't go much by the book, but expects U to know every quot
He gets kind of annoying...he think hes way to cool or something but anyway..class wise...you get to see that all theories are alomost the same. tests are tricky he puts quotes on there and then you have to match it with the theorist which is really wack cos he never goes over that. you need to read "makes me wanna holler" really good book!!!
Jarret nees to grow up first before he's allowed to teach.
He was a great teacher he made the class very interesting and easy to understand. There is one 6-7 page paper and its based on a book that you have to read. He does not go over the book. Tests are ok usually multiple choice and only a few short answer. Good teacher! Will keep you awake!
He twists questions and does not know how to answer them. Only his way of thinking is accepted, I hated the fact he tried to cram his extremely liberal and marxist ideologies on us. Lovell, Youre entitled to your views but please be more professional in the classroom, blapshamy was offensive, I didn't degrade your religion
He is an good teacher and expresses his views, but he says that his tests are easy and straight forward and in reality they are hard. I had an A in the class and next thing I know when grades come out I have a C. He is enjoyable but take him at your own risk
best proffessor i've ever had. he challenges you and your way of thinking, and some people may not like that. extremely intelligent, expects a lot, as he should. take lovell if you are looking for more than an easy a.
Even though his class was super hard, I taught he was a good professor. People just don't like him because he actually makes you think and question unlike other professors. Even though his jokes are repetitive, he is still funny and fun. I never fell asleep in his class (which is very rare) and he is always available after class for questions.
All I have to say is, Yummy.
Lovell is a great professor. There is no doubt that it is a somewhat difficult class. If you plan on an easy class, pick something else. But, if you want to learn a lot of things that will help you with your major (CJ), then he is great. He is very fun. He is very funny. He will keep you awake for sure. Take the course. No HW, just outside paper.
Beware...He may seem cool but if this guy doesn't like you, he'll let it be known. ie.) Discouraging in many ways, not being helpful during office hours, having no trust in you. I'm sure other people may feel opposite but through my experience it felt like this guy really did not want me to pass his class.
Lovell is a teacher for those CJ majors who really want to learn. If you want a laid back class do not take him, take morton instead. Out of all the CJ professors that I have taken I can honestly say that I have learn the most from Lovell. Interesting character and his lectures keep the mind stimulated. Always drinks coffee so hes always amped.
He is not for those looking for an easy A. Dr. Lovell totally has ADD but that is what keep his lectures interesting. Good looking, smart, & Jewish, what more could a girl want?
Horrible teacher. Expects work to be preformed on a graduate level instead of undergrad level. Tests difficult. Study guide not helpful. Doesn't stick to his word.

The class is made interesting because he livens it up w/his stories. He's super hyper but hilarious. He'll make you cringe, laugh, but importantly- he'll have you thinking. The material can be difficult but he makes it easier to understand. Great guy and very worthwhile professor to take.
He livens his lectures up by either making a fool of himself on purpose, his stories, or realistic examples of the class material. For his term papers, the trick to him is to ALWAYS present your argument, possible counter-arguments, and explaining those counter-arguments away. That is a MUST with him.
Best Teacher I have ever had. Hard at times, but makes you think hard and understand the concepts. If you want to learn about criminal justice, this is the guy to take. I try to take every CRJ class with him that I can
......
AMAZING teacher. Really makes you think. There is a lot of reading involved in his classes, but everything pertains to the course. He challenges your views to help you really understand why you think the way you do. I've never learned so much from one class. Best teacher at CSUF.
SoOo HOTT!still looking for those pictures!he really knows what hes talking about.amazing teacher and his lectures are the best.the book was boring but u really learn everything from his lectures.he challenges one to open your mind and get out of the box! Lets you know what to study for but his test are a little tricky but still easy. Take him!!
One of the best classes I have had. He really knew what he was talking about and makes you really think about why you believe the things you do. I am taking him again for the Spring 2007. He not only taught me how to study for his tests but also for others. If you need help, go to his office and he will help you. He is an all around nice guy!
He is hilarious! He is absolutly nuts some times but he is the best honors 101 A teacher. If you have thw option take his class. You may not due s much homework, but you better not be an idiot or he'll call you out on it.
I wasn't doing too well on the tests and visited him once a week to go over the paper and preparation for the final. Very helpful if you seek it from him. Has a sense of humor! Really cares for his students who cares to learn. Take his class!
AMAZING! i learned more in his class than in any other. and i laughed a LOT. he wears jeans and t-shirts to class, and he did not give us tests, only essays. I loved the whole semester!
This professor started out aight... but then he screwed me over... hates cops, military, me, and probably even himself. Does not accept differing opinions. Would like you to believe that all protestors are Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr., and refuses to admit there are evil people who do bad things in the world. Don't take him. Ever.
I heard horrible things about this guy at first, turns out the person who warned me was a losser. Need to attend class because his tests are 85-90 % lecture, besides you actually enjoy going. There are three tests and one paper. He may say you need to read but thats only because he wants you to participate in the class, not required for tests.
On two occasions he made us leave for not doing the reading. Two other times he yelled at us & implied that we are "lazy" for not doing the reading & not speaking up in class, yet on both those times he assigned the wrong material. I pay $2,000+ a semester to teach myself since he won't talk unless we ALL do ALL the reading every time.
We had 3 required books with the same information in it, none of which will be bought back even though he uses the same ones every semester. I felt like we were talking about the same subject on week 16 as we were on week 1. He admits that he "expects a master's like thesis" format for the writing assignment, but gives you the topic one week before
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! His test question are ambiguous and do not relate well to what was covered in class. I am an A student and I was seriously worried about passing his class. He complains about people not participating but then makes fun of the people who do.
Avoid This Professor seriously. My previous comments are right. Reading is a must for his classes. He not helpful at all. Kick him out
He's intelligent professor. He intimidated me, but I still learned alot from him. He tried really hard to help us understand some complicated topics. You really have to speak up in his class
The only professor i've had who has seriously changed my world. I went into this subject to become a criminal prosecutor. I have come out of it wanting social justice. If you don't want to think or change your world, don't take him; if you do, he will teach you soooo much. I wish everyone could take him and understand the "real" world.
Closed minded, hypocritical, and displays many of the patterns of an instructor who has spent his entire career in academia, with no real world experience. He says he's been arrested to get street cred, but then you find out he was protesting the RNC. He will cut off your contrarian opinion. Either you agree with him or are irrevocably wrong.
AVOID THIS MAN!! He is set in his ways, doesn't give you OR your opinion the time of day. He hates conservatives but also hates liberals. Hates cops and better yet I think hates everyone including himself. AVOID!! Trust me he has favorites and if you don't talk in his class or do the RIDICULOUS amount of reading, he'll hate you.
He's an ok professor. There is no textbook, only articles that he posted on blackboard. If you dont read he gets mad. He asks people to speak in class and just ends up making fun of them. He steals the majority of his jokes from The Simpsons. He's not hot but always wanted a hot pepper, so there it is!
He's a good professor, the course isn't hard if you keep up with the readings from the articles he puts up on BB. He asks for student's opinions often, and will definately make you think outside of the box! I learned a lot in his course, and would recommend him! Don't let the other comments fool you, he's a good guy!
Great professor... I got a B in the class and I didnt even read any of the articles. Just pay attention and take good notes and you will do fine.
Great Professor. Honestly cares for his students. No tests or final, just 4-5 papers. His lectures make you think. Class is an open discussion where students judge where lectures go. Overall, excellent professor and class.
Easiest CJ class I ever took. Just read the material and pay attention in class. The tests and paper are easy if you read everything you're supposed to. Got 100 percent or close to it on every assignment/test.
Nice Guy. Very funny. Keeps the class going. Just Read and Listen and im sure you'll do good.
Nice and funny. Keeps the class going. make sure you participate..Just Read and listen and im sure you'll do good. overall a good teacher oh and yup hot too.
Jarret is AMAZING. Great professor, easy work load...I suggest participating in class and listening. I learned so much from this guy in the semester I had with him...I wish I could have him again! New at teaching Honors, but one of the best, I'm sure. If you like discussions and don't like essays, tests, and heavy reading, this is the class for you
hes wat a professor should never be. very biased, not open to ur opinions, hes always right. gives u 3 textbooks and expects u to read them like you have no life.those of u that agree you HAVE to do the reading. i pay to go this school and can choose the way i want to learn. and ppl that think this guy is hot? that means rosie o donell is a model
It was an interesting class, especially with him teaching it. He's not a bad teacher, just a little intimidating toward the beginning. No tests or quizzes but there are essays, however they are not too difficult. He wants you to read the text, but it is not really necassary, but it does help to a certain degree. Overall it was a good class.
One of the most down to earth professors. He makes the class so fun and interesting. Makes you critically think about the world around you and helps you think out of the box. One of my favorite professors.
Prof Lovell is an amazing teacher and I learned a lot. He obviously cares about his students and their success, which is why he is so hard on people sometimes. I NEVER read the textbook. Must attend every class and take really good notes. Got A on every test and A on paper. Paper is easy as long as you read the book it's based on.
I was very excited in the beginning of the semester to attend this class. Now I dread going and I count the days till the semster ends. The problem is Lovell and his ego. If he would get over himself and his self righteous behavior he would be really good. He is a prime example of too much power in the wrong hands. Do not take this class.
I couldn't disagree more with the negative comments about him.I think he is a really brilliant guy who doesn't push his ideas or beliefs onto anyone, rather he encourages his students to think critically. He has a great sense of humor and encourages active participation. I hope I get a chance to take another class from him before I graduate. :)
Prof. Lovell is one of the most influential professors I have had. I have never been challenged to critically think the way Lovell has taught me to. He doesn't push his views, he only wants students to develop a view of their own. I took him for 2 classes and enjoyed both. Show up, take notes, participate, and you'll do fine. Thanks again Lovell!
awesome teacher. wants his students to succeed and learn. truly cares about his students. pretty funny guy.even though I didn't like the class he made it bareable. strongly recommend taking him you wont regret it.
GREAT professor!! I can honestly say he is the best professor I've ever had so far at CSUF. He really cares about students and wants them to ACTUALLY learn and succeed. I had also never been challenged to think critically until I took his class.
TAKE THIS PROFFESSOR! very funny guy, very helpful, honestly best prof. I've ever had. 2 exams, 1 final, 1 paper, very easy if you go to class, take notes, and do the reading. He says he always wanted a chili pepper so here it goes...just to make his wish come true :)
Lovell NEVER EVER responds to crucial emails, even when he says he does. Loves to put people on blast in class, and even when people participate he likes to drill them. Overall he thinks he is the best thing to grace the planet. This class really made me reconsider changing my major...
Maybe the best professor I have had. He really challenges your thoughts on everything. I was nervous after reading all of his ratings but if you go to class and pay attention you will do fine. He really gets you into the lectures just make sure to pay attention
HE IS AN AWESOME TEACHER! IF YOU ATTEND CLASS YOU WILL BE FINE. MAKE SURE YOU READ WHAT HE ASKS OR HE WILL BE UPSET! HE BREAKS EVERYTHING DOWN TO MAKE THE MOST DIFFICULT MATERIAL INTERESTING AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I RECOMMEND HIM 100% A GREAT TEACH! HIS SO FUNNY AND REAL.
He was hands down the best professor i have ever taken!! He is funny, and makes the class material interesting and entertaining. All you have to do is come to class and take good notes and remember to do the readings!
Lovell is by far the best criminal justice professor on campus. He's very cool but also very smart and makes you think. I wish I could take him for every class. There are 3 exams and 1 book report. If you pay attention and do well on the book report you'll do fine.
Great teacher! Easy, just show up, take notes, and you will get a good grade. Wish He taught more classes. Makes the classes interesting and very laid back.
Take this class if and only if you're ready to think. His lectures are insightful, informative, and knowledgable. He teaches with passion, illustrating that he cares about what he lectures on. Gives lots of opportunity to help you when you need it, will review anything you don't understand!
He IS funny and real! I LOVE having him as my professor. I highly recommend you CJ majors take his class! =D
took him for as many as he taught...would have taken more if possible.. I learned more in these classes than anything I was taught in college.... Chili Peppers!!!!!
Lovell is a good teacher but is very biased in his lectures (liberal). He's a funny guy and likes class participation. He regularly puts people on the spot, so read and be prepared for class. Taught the policing subject with an interesting perspective/point of view. However, I would not take him again. Nice guy but just not for me.
attendance- mandatory!! paying attention and being involved - mandatory!! read before you go to his class and be prepared to get called on. I always sat in the front and enjoyed this class. Very interesting and gives a lot of real life examples to help you understand concepts....study everything on your notes for the tests...and you'll do fine
He challenged me and made me question the way I look at the world in the best way possible. It's refreshing to be inspired by a professor.
Didn't like him at first. He grows on you. He has a very aggressive teaching method and calls on people that do not initially volunteer. I've taken many teachers, he by far, is one of the best. He is a really great teacher and really wants his students to learn. He is a Must Take! Very funny, sarcastic, and good guy!
If you hate lectures off boring powerpoints, then this is the guy for you. He makes you understand concepts so that they stick in your mind, and he's really funny too! Best CRJU professor I've had. Took 315/330 so far
My FAVORITE CJ professor! ( or CSUF professor to be honest). He is soo passionate about the subject, and honestly made me second guess my career path. He gives great examples, and really makes students think critically. The tests are a little wordy, and hard at times, but if you study you'll be fine. You have to participate in class. FUN CLASS!!
I love Lovell! he is hilarious. The book he assigns you to read (other than the textbook) is actually a really good book, I couldn't put it down. And even though his tests are little tricky, if you study and pay attention in class you will do fine! He is hilarious, helpful..and hilarious. I would highly suggest you take him!
Best professor you will ever have. He is HILARIOUS!! First class in my three years of college that I did not skip once. Attend class, read the novel he assigns, and you'll pass no problem.
GREAT PROFESSOR. seriously, take him, you won't regret it. His lectures keep you interested. The only class i looked forward in going to. He picks on everyone in class, but he means no harm. He's really funny and his tests are a little difficult but if you try, you'll pass.
The best teacher at CSUF. I would stongly suggest taking his class. Everything is from lecture. If you show up to his classes, you will pass. great teacher
Got an A in this class, my first A at CSUF, with minimal effort. He keeps class very engaged, humorous, and thoughtful. Very good professor. The exams are mainly based from the notes, and if you write exactly what he says, you will really have no problem passing the exams. Very easy, no trick questions, just very straight-forward. He's a great guy.
i've taken him for cj 330 and cj 315. LOVE this professor! wish he taught more classes. i would definitely recommend this professor!
GREAT professor, very good engaging class. He makes class very interesting and pretty straight forward. He's a funny guy! CJ majors must take :) You do have to read a book Makes Me Wanna Holler, because the paper is based off of it, but the book is interesting!
Even though I got a C in his class. It was by far my favorite class. Challenged me in a good way. Very interesting, funny, and passionate. Definitely recommend taking his class
Lovell is probably the best teacher I've had so far at CSUF. He doesn't write much on the board or use powerpoints so if straight up lecturing isn't your style I wouldn't recommend him. But he is obviously passionate about the subject matter and he doesn't try to trick you on the tests. I'd take another class taught by him in a heartbeat.
If you are a CJ major, this class will truly offer an in-depth enlightenment into the theory of crime and the policy implications that can be taken from it. He is phenomenal and analytical. Highly recommend, plus his jokes keep the class fresh and light.
Lovell is one of my favorite professors at CSUF. I took CJ 474, Animals Law and Society. This class enlightened me to think about life in a different way. It is life changing and it is definitely worth taking. This class consists of five journal entries, a midterm, and a final. Participation is essential for this class!
He is a great professor. Test are hard, if you don't go to class. He is very animated and I love his stories! He is very pationate about what he teaches and cares about his students passing. His funny and an overall great and easy professor. Would take again!
Dr. Lovell was one of the worst professor I had. He was unreasonably difficult. His lectures were not helpful. Even though, I passed the class but it took more time than it should have been required. By-pass this professor.
Best professor ever !! He is just an amazing teacher. WARNING if you like power points HE IS NOT FOR YOU!! His lectures are amazing and interesting to the point u don't want to miss a class. His test are HARD but if you read take good notes and ask for help he will help you and go out of his way for you. He is the reason why i love CJ.
He wants a chili pepper! Lots of reading and the material can get confusing when you look at his notes and the book. I prefered his lectures to the book. Does not use powerpoints. 3 test and a paper. He can be intimidating but I still liked him to other professors. Make sure you read before class because he could call on you.
Really interesting class. NOT AN EASY A. 5 journals that you do that must tie in to course readings. 2 take home tests that your given one week for. Learned so much in this class and became a vegetarian. Great teacher and he really loves what he teaches. MUST WORK FOR A GOOD GRADE!
Awesome prof. Very funny but can be intimidating at the same time but always reassures that you can visit him during office hours if you don't understand. You must read because he will call on you. Exams can be tough because it's APPLIED questions, none of that "What theory did __create?" BS. Show up to class, take good notes, read and you'll pass.
Really makes you think critically about the subject. Super interesting and I actually ended up loving the class! Make sure to SHOW UP, PAY ATTENTION, READ and PARTICIPATE! Also show up during office hours-it helps! Prof Lovell creates a fun learning environment (and he's cute)-take him!!
One of my favorite professors. He is passionate about the material he teaches, which makes learning from him so easy. He expects participation and for you to have read the material before class. He is hilarious and makes class fun.
Classes are strictly lecture only so you must take your own notes of what he says. He tells you what you need to remember for the test. Tests are slightly difficult because it isn't straight forward. 3 test and one paper (from book). If you don't read the hw he gets pissed. kind of petty on little useless stuff and goes on tangents. so-so professor
He asks the first day the question, "what causes crime?". Answer is "power"
Dr. Lovell is the epitome of a university level professor. He is challenging, literally, he will always take the opposing argument you present, leaving your mind boggled yet very educated on both sides of a topic. Lots of reading, but very interesting and inspiring articles. You MUST read! You MUST participate! No powerpoints. Overall great class!
worst professor I could have ever taken so picky and would put you in the spot even if you yawn... therefore don't take him unless you can handle someone like that
"Take him" is about the simplest thing I could say. Here's some descriptions: crazy, funny, friendly, playful, deejay, awesome/super awesome, vegan, intimidating, musical, impersonator, agile, lady's man, off-the-wall, devil's advocate, skeptical, Amy Schumer lover, passionate, & cool dude.
Prof Lovell challenges you to think critically and in doing so you open your mind and learn so much about CJ. His class is difficult, but I promise you will learn so much! Be sure to read and participate!
An amazing professor! He challenged me to think outside the box rather than just having simple answers. This class may seem difficult to people but if you just attend class and take notes and be sure to read it is not a difficult class. It is very interesting and he is very enthusiastic which keeps you interested.
Never as a CJ Student have i ever had a more awful professor. He is too full of himself. He encourages participation, but yet he critizes you for your opinion. Test and paper are tough. Overall, you can tell he is passionate in what he teaches but he needs to learn how to be more professional in the classroom and not be so tough on grading.
Hands down my favorite professor I have ever had here. He is very smart and passionate about what he teaches. It is very important to participate because he wants you to care about what you are learning. Tests are based on applied knowledge not just memorizing facts. Paper is not tricky or hard and he is always available in office hours to help.
Rude professor. Makes you think you are wrong. 3 exams, read a 400pg book and write a paper on it. This 400pg book is additional to the textbook. He doesn't take attendance, but you'll miss a lot of info if you skip. Plus he does not use PowerPoint, so you have to attend to get the info.
Lovell is very entertaining. But the way he taught the material was difficult. Notes were scattered across the board. Take someone else.
Best professor I've had so far. He makes you want to go to class and makes you participate in a fun and positive way. If you don't know an answer, he will help you and make sure you understand it; he doesn't make you feel stupid about it. This is how ALL professors should be!!!!!! And he has a great sense of style. Take him!
Asks for your opinions to be shared in class but he attacks any opinion that doesn't line up with his. After he totally destroyed a girl for her beliefs in class, nobody wanted to share their thoughts. I was honestly afraid I would receive a low grade for sharing my personal beliefs.... Some lectures can be interesting but I wasn't able to engage.
I like how this professor lectures, makes you think outside of the box. However, his study guides don't help as much as I had hoped. He wants you to understand the concepts not just memorize the terms. But when you take the test, sometimes there are questions in there like quotes from the reading that you would've never thought about memorizing
I am currently taking Lovell and he is a great professor! He makes class very enjoyable and teaches the lectures in a very easy and enthusiastic way. He helps you understand by always engaging with the class and telling stories. Take him! You'll want to go to class!!
He was literally the worst professor I've ever had. He may have been passionate and very knowledgeable on the subject, but he's a tough grader and his tests are ridiculous. He does not use power point so you have to take notes. Be prepared to read too. That's important to him. He grades the paper heavily and points out mistakes that really add up!
He's very passionate yet very witty. He likes to debate your opinion and that's why people are afraid to speak. He's a tough grader and personally if you can take another professor do so. He can be rude sometimes and think it's funny.
professor lovell is not one to take if you're not easily offended. he plays the devils advocate in probably every opinion you state, but id be lying if i said i didn't learn. I retained so much from this class. he's very intelligent, funny but harsh. you need to read or he'll get upset. 3 exams, 1 paper. decent class, funny professor
Just write a biased paper siding with him and you'll get an A+every time. Trust me, I intentionally wrote an excellent paper from a conservative point of view just to see what he would say and he literally wrote that I was wrong when he handed the assignment back. I then nearly word for word copied an article he wrote himself and he gave me an A.
He is extremely offensive. One of the class readings said that Christianity and it's teachings were poison! I couldn't believe it! How does this apply to Animals and Law!? People are allowed to believe what they want in this country. Just not in that classroom...
You need to read the book. Its more discussion than anything. The grading is not too harsh. It is not too difficult to pass if you do the work.
Pro: you will learn some stuff. he can be entertaining. his study guides match the content of the exam. reading does help a lot. challenges you Cons: says dirty jokes. does not respond to emails from multiple students. flirts with girls in the class. His flirting can take away from the material of the class because he will get side tracked.
Be prepared to talk. He calls on everyone so you won't be able to hide. READ the discussion is from the reading. If you don't come to lecture good luck, everything he says is on the test and usually talks about the essay question in class. He's honestly hilarious and I'm not sure how people think he's offensive. He does question your answer.
Yikes, ended up switching majors.
Best teacher I have ever had. Going to a university, you are not going to find a teacher who actually cares about each and every one of their students grades but Lovell is amazing. Lots of reading but really worth it, you learn a lot that sticks with you. If youre going to school to actually retain information, definitely take one of his classes.
He is an amazing professor! You do have to work for your grade. There is a lot of reading, but hey it's college. I would recommend this professor because you will learn a lot from him. He is passionate about the subject and ensures you participate. He also has a nice sense of humor and is respectful. He genuinely cares about all his student
Amazing lecturer. Definitely knows what he is talking about and is extremely passionate. Grade is based off 3 exams and a paper. Tests are very fair, but you can only pass if you show up to class. If you habitually do not go to class avoid this professor. Chooses on people (mostly the pretty girls) and enjoys reading these comments during class
This professor is extremely picky and hard on his essay portions and one essay he assigns. He is great at explaining his lectures yet his exams are confusing! He makes it hard to pass the class, oh yeah he has favorites who he picks on too so annoying!! Super cocky to relax you ain't all that. Would not retake this professor again!
I actually learned a lot in his class. He is super funny and caring, his funny stories will help you remember theories.
Unprofessional, and treats the class like elementary school kids. If you didn't have time to read or didn't fully understand the material, then you will have trouble following the class. This class taught me to use this website before choosing my classes; because if I did, I would not have taken this professor.
He's a funny professor but can be a bit rude outside of class. He can be a bit intimidating but I would still suggest to talk to him if you need the extra help. Make sure you read because he will know if no one did the readings. Ask any questions you need. The first test was easy, the last two were hard.
Tries extremely hard to keep class engaged. Fights back against any argument to test its validity. Makes good jokes. Opens up to class and deeply cares about his students personally and academically. Makes sure everyone is aware that his inappropriate jokes are just that: silly jokes. Treats class like who would his friends. A brilliant mind.
A large portion of this class is based on discussion of topics read. No matter what answer you give during class or on discussion post there always seems to be something wrong with your answer. He is not an English teacher however will mark you down a whole letter grade if your grammar is slightly off... highly don't recommend taking
Professor Lovell is a weird dude. There is never a dull moment with his odd and dry humor. He is not for everyone, but he knows what he is talking about. He is respectable in regards to the field. You definitely have to work for your grade, but he is a pretty flexible and understanding guy. Overall a 6/10.
3 exams, 1 paper, multiple quizzes through the semester. His lectures were very enjoyable but there are no power points so you just have to write as he goes along. Does give a study guide for exams but its just key terms. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to pass.
Professor Lovell is the real deal. He knows his material and genuinely wants to pass that knowledge onto the students. Make sure you read and participate, as it is a tough class (the way a 400 level class should be). As such, he is highly accessible outside of class for help. His sense of humor is fantastic. Id take him again but I have graduated.
I loved this class. It is said to be one of the hardest classes to take for CRJU majors but I don't think it was that bad with him. Yes, he likes for you to be specific and does grade though but he wants you to think critically. If people did not pass his class it is because they didn't try. If u study hard 1 hour a week u'll be fine. Tests r easy
Lovell is a bizarre professor. Things he is good at: -Making students (especially women) feel uncomfortable -Degrading students for not reading assigned text -Talking about himself and how smart he is for graduating from Rutgers University Bottom line, I would not waste my time with this teacher. Find another teacher if you need to take CJ330!
Assigned readings are essential to succeeding in this course. Professor Lovell is passionate about criminal justice and although I may disagree with his personal opinions, he is a good professor. Critical thinking is a big part of this class that really made me enjoy it. Be sure to prepare ahead of class bc participation is big too.
Lovell is a great professor who knows his stuff. Although, if you are like me who just likes to listen to lectures, chances are you will get called on. He seems intimidating, but he isn't. This was probably the first class I have ever gotten anxiety just showing up. I did learn a lot & his exams aren't too bad, def do the reading.
This class was difficult--I had never before needed to be such a critical thinker for such a topic. His lectures are sometimes boring but he tries his best to keep the class on their toes and paying attention. He loves calling on students randomly to see if they've done the readings or are paying attention. There's weekly quizzes on the readings
Worst Professor I have ever had at CSUF. He clearly has favorites and grades accordingly. Test are so material heavy and he is super picky on writing assignments, should have been an English teacher instead. Would not recommend if you need to pass this class to graduate.
Lovell is an awful professor. He will call you out in front of class for not doing the DAILY reading. Talks about himself so much, which would be fine if his test weren't so detailed about the material.Lives for degrading students, especially women, make students feel uncomfortable.I would not recommend Lovell to anyone. Find someone else for 330
Take 330 with someone else. Lovell makes you not even want to attend class. I'm an A / B student, and this was the only class I was not able to get at least a B on. Worst professor I've had at csuf
If you want to pass, you need to memorize every single definition exactly the way he said it in class. Reword a definition even the slightest and he'll mark it wrong. Such a pain in the ass; he talks and talks about himself all class. Ask him a question and he will make you feel dumb. Need to do daily reading or he'll call you out in front of class
By far the WORST CJ professor I had at CSUF. Do yourself a huge favor and take anyone else but this guy. I could write an entire APA formatted essay on why he should not be a paid educator for a somewhat respectable university like CSUF, but instead I will be nice and just say to avoid him at all costs.
Really really bad. He is somewhat rude to students and makes you feel stupid if he calls on you and you don't know the answer to his question. If he was as good at teaching as he is at making his students feel dumb, he would be a fantastic professor. Instead, he is just an egotistical jerk that profits off the university.
The lecture is very interesting, but he is a tough grader. He has a very strong personality. If you go to his office hours he is very nice. He is very passionate about his classes and the subjects he teaches. I would say just be ready to work less hours, have no social life, and do ALL the readings. Ask for help ahead of time and you should be good
My experience with Lovell was not bad at all he is very passionate about what he teaches. All you have to do is attend lectures, pay attention, and DO THE READINGS. It is a tough class but if you aren't ready to face challenges drop out please cuz like it's giving lazy, you're literally at a university put forth the effort and it will pay off :*
Terrible professor!!!!!!
After reading the reviews I was worried about taking his class, but he isn't how anyone describes him at all! You do need to participate and he will cold call on you so I recommend doing the readings, they're not a lot but make sure to read them until you understand them because this is a discussion class. He's not mean just funny and sarcastic.
Take him! He does cold call on students and I hate that as well, but it is not as bad as the reviews make it seem. He never tries to embarrass us and he makes it a comfortable classroom. His class is entertaining and makes the topics easier to understand through his stories. He's hilarious but get ready to read. 3 exams, 1 paper.
Really interesting class and Lovell is very passionate about the topic. There is a lot of reading and he assigns his entire book for the semester, which you have to read to pass. There were two papers, quizzes every week or so, midterm, and the final was cumulative. He is kind of a tough grader on papers. He's not super understanding sometimes.
This professor was indeed a hard grader. You must write down exactly how he phrases things on exams to pass. He does not curve exams or give out extra credit even though the class average was a D. You will read every day, and yes, he will cold call on you. Came to class with COVID. He would not answer questions if he felt we should know the answer.
He cold calls students and gets upset whoever can't answer questions from the readings. Despite emailing him at least three times during the semester, I never received a response. There are exams, one essay, and online quizzes. The essay, worth only ten points, barely affected my grade despite getting a good score. Avoid taking his class!
Professor Lovell's class is a challenge, but engaging with the material can pay off. Be prepared to participate - he calls on students, so do the readings. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of it. Tools like Unstuckstudy can help with study prep.
His lectures are fun but the test is heavy on writing. You are better off memorizing the book then come to lecture. No study guide or power points given.
his class claims to teach about crime and power, ironically embodying those dynamics. his lectures demand intellectual submission-critical thinking optional. Want an A? Simply agree. Social justice becomes a facade for academic authoritarianism, where nuance dies and conformity reigns absolute. Speak only to echo.
lectures were interesting but hes very rude, especially when grading. theres ways to teach without being so obnoxious
he is the worst professor at CSUF If you dont agree with his opinions then you are going to fail the class becuase that is the "only right" way to think and be able pass his tests. He preaches how he hates trump and how upset he is that kamala lost. Like i thought professors were supposed to be unbias and keep their political opinions at home.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND RUN FROM THIS PROF HE IS THE WORST HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TEACH HE IS BIASED HE IS RUDE HE IS BRAINWASHING STUDENTS INTO THINKING HIS WAY ONLY ITS HIS WAY OR THE HIGHWAY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIND ANOTHER PROF TO TAKE THIS CLASS WITH
Please do not take this prof at csuf, he is not caring, he is rude, he doesnt teach you anything in his class and he doesnt help when you email him asking for help, he doesnt give you time of day to ask him questions before or after class he is always in a rush. Please take someone else, if you want to pass you must agree with him and his opinion
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR
Do not take him
not clear instrutions, doesnt teach from the book
WHATEVER YOU DO, RUN! i was warned by others about him, but had to take his class. he is biased and cold calls you like crazy. if you want a good grade, just agree with what he says. if you can choose from him and another cj prof., whatever you do just take the other prof. if you have no choice then gg bro good luck to you...
By far the worst CJ professor at CSUF. It's a shame the university has not done anything to have this joke of a teacher removed. Not only is he pompous and condescending when he speaks to his students, but he really has no idea what criminal justice and police work is like outside of a textbook. Please do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM!
First and foremost, over-hated. Lovell is undoubtedly difficult, but prevails as one of the most engaging and worthwhile professors I have studied under in all my days of education. He may not care if you pass, but he cares about teaching you if you want to learn. He's got a big heart, loves music, and loves Durkheim. Couldn't recommend more.
Do NOT take this Professor or this class!! Was graded by a few things, the exams were ridiculously difficult. We all struggled in this course. He has an attitude and is not approachable at all when it comes to speaking to him during office hours. If all your students are struggling, it should be a reflection of your teaching skills.
