Horrible. Tests dont even match the material taught.

He reads off the slides, the only item marked are the midterms and exams, and might as well be a DE course with how much self studying you gotta do. Also concepts are far from simple and content heavy.

Would not recommend, his lectures are so boring, and the questions and practice material are simple and different from what will be on your midterms.

Midterm was stupid hard. Not enough time regarding the fact that not a single question was similar to the practice material. Lectures are a waste of time, practice material is a waste of time. Avoid the class

you end up teaching this course by yourself, dont bother with the lectures, dont bother with anything to be honest because nothing similar shows up on the mid terms when looking at zybooks, labs, or practice tets.

Nice guy overall, but a lot of his lessons are very hard to follow. He speeds through PowerPoint slides before anyone can finish taking notes, gives ridiculously largely weighted midterm tests, and makes them very difficult.

dropped this class the second i got back from the midterm. no point taking it with Jarrett Phillips when he makes the lectures useless and the midterms another level of difficult. nothing like the study material. terrible lisp and completely un-understandable. it's basically a self teaching course. this guys a glorified PowerPoint reader.

Joke of a class and one of the worst lecturers I've ever had the displeasure of having. Take a gamble at what you should study, b/c it's going to take time away from your other courses. Had us memorize an unreasonable amount of content for midterm and doesn't allow calculators. Reads verbatim (and poorly) from slides, might as well be a DE course.

The class was a complete mess. about 20 topics were rushed before the first midterm, yet only 2-3 unrelated ones showed up on the exam. None of the content matched lecture notes or zyBooks, so studying felt pointless. No offence to Jarrett I'm sure he's a nice guy but DO NOT take this course with him. He will assign entirely new material (hours long) 2 days before the midterm and then laugh at you for studying that because it won't even be on the midterm. Insanely low time for insanely hard questions. I witnessed pure horror on my first midterm.

Arguably one of THE best profs i've ever had, reads the slides like a king and makes the midterm SOO easy, make sure to sit in the front so you can feel his spit and don't forget if your taking this course, you got to be doing it for the love of the game! aced all my midterms that i didn't even do the final cause it's just that easy. Lectures mainly consist of him reading off the slides verbatim. The practice questions he encourages bare little resemblance to what appeared on the midterm. It's his first time teaching this course so It really isn't anything personal but the quality of teaching is just subpar.

As a professor, Jarrett is not good. If you're looking for someone to genuinely help you understand the material this is not the guy. To him, a midterm being “fair”, means a TA can do it. Which I'd sure hope so since they were taught by Pascal, a far better teacher, and are TAing the course. If you skipped every lecture you'd have the same mark

This class was basically PowerPoint karaoke, midterm felt like Squid Games, and the only thing we learned was how to collectively fail together

Dropped the class right after the midterm, figured no point paying thousands just to watch a guy read slides and ruin my GPA

No calculators but gave us power questions, no formula sheet but expected us to memorize an entire semester in a week, felt less like a class and more like academic torture

Don't get me wrong he's a great guy. But not as a professor. Went to every single lecture and did not learn a thing. You have to learn everything on your own and in so little time. Absolute complete waste of time, spend all of your time on this course and then have nothing left for other classes. Only reads off slides. Ruined my start to university

The midterm had nothing to do with anything most of the stuff we learned wan't even on the midterm

Nothing form the text book, lecture or practice exam was in the midterm we studied 20 different topics and he tested us on 2, studing was a waste of time.

Worst course ever! be prepared to take it 2nd time because nothing made sense,bad prof and bad ta's, we had practice exam a day before the exam and it was a mess. more then half of the student came to the practice exam with all the ta's and the ta's skipped half of the quetions. then the day of the exam comes and you will be tested on 2 topics.

Tries to be funny but fails, although I appreciate that he tries. Emphasizes the use of a 65USD textbook but the exams are formatted completely differently. Studied 20 topics which "could be on the exam," was tested on 2. Graded 100% on exams (2 Midterm, 1 Final). ONLY READS OFF OF SLIDES >:| No formula sheet, no calculator, all memorization.Sucky.

We sat through lectures of slides read word-for-word, rushed and unclear. Every grade came from impossible exams with no calc or formula sheet, just memorization. Homework and textbooks were useless, and most of the material never showed up on tests. We felt unprepared, overworked, and defeated—many dropped, worst course ever.

Good luck if you have discrete with this guy. That class genuinely decreased my mental health.

Cannot speak on his other courses. But he teaches 1910 terribly. It's an embarrassing attempt of a job. Avoid the guy at all costs. Reads lectures word for word, and midterms don't reflect all the practice material at all. Hard class as it is, really has no reason to be harder.

The professor doesn't teach anything in his lectures or labs. He just reads off the slides without explaining anything, doesn't even know how to curve our grades after the majority of the class failed. He needs to be fired.

Teaches CIS*1910 very poorly. Just reads off slides with little explanation. Midterm barely matches the practice material, and no part marks are given, it's all or nothing, which makes learning pointless. The course is already tough, but his teaching makes it much worse.

Worst professor ever. I attended every lecture and lab, studied for 3 weeks and then the topics on the midterm aren't even what was taught in class.

The practice questions provided by SOCIS and the textbook did not align well with what was assessed on the midterm. Given the difficult nature of this course coupled with poor teaching (mainly reads off slides) and misleading practice questions for assessments, it is quite difficult to do well, let alone pass this course.

This prof does not ask anything from lecture slides or zybooks, he made us by zybooks which costs 90 car for what, nothing. Get ready to do lots & lots of extra stuff because this prof is unpredictable

Midterm doesn't match anything he gave us for practice and he only gave us an hour to write 8 pages.

He reads right off the slides - no need to go to the lectures. For lectures, he either doesn't use the microphone or he puts it so far in his mouth that you can't hear either way. The exam was NOTHING like the slides or practice questions, and we should have had wayyy more time to do it than we got. Definitely don't recommend!

The professor is unhelpful and an awful lecturer. He reads straight off the slides adding no additional input making the already hard material difficult to remember. The midterm wasn't necessarily unusually hard but the majority of us were just vastly unprepared because nothing he told us to practice was on the midterm.

He doesnt know how to teach, the midterms are only graded by a couple things and its SOOOO hard to understand what hes saying, literally no point of the lecture, entire course is self-taught.

Class may be very difficult and exams may be hard, but when the teacher has absolutely zero clue how to instruct and actually allow the students to understand, it's not fair. Literally haven't learned a thing from this guy, along with probably 99% of other students who also don't learn anything from this guy.

This professor is completely useless. He reads the slides like a broken robot, offers zero explanations, and then designs exams on material he never taught. Every lecture is a total waste of time. If you're unlucky enough to get him, be ready to teach yourself everything and struggle for no reason.

Tells you stuff is gonna be on the midterm just for it to not be there. The midterms have no content from some of the longest slideshows. Don't bother going to the lecture just teach yourself cuz there's no way ur learning anything from his class. The lectures are not helpful. Labs and Zybooks are useful but they don't accurately reflect what is on the midterms. The practice problems given for the midterm review barely reflect exam questions either--the difficulty gap is too big. Jarrett seems like a nice person but right now this course is a mess.

Just reads off slides, doesn't really add much of his own commentary during lectures. You may as well teach yourself the content. Tells us to study a wide range of topics before tests, but very little of it is tested. The TAs are the only reason I understand anything.

The review questions and "preparation" provided for the exams do not reflect the actual content on the exams. He does not take criticism well and is not open to conversation or improvements of his ineffective teaching style.

The professor told us that the 2 long ans. questions on the midterm exam will be derived from two chapters of the Zybooks, however, the midterm had questions that was not practiced anywhere and was only briefly mentioned in a lecture and never talked about until the review session A DAY BEFORE the midterm, which was more stressful than helpful.

Had questions on the second midterm that were never taught in the lectures or anywhere in the Zybooks and the professor and TAs gaslighting us by saying this was the easiest midterm this course ever had and the professor is delusional by being surprised that people did worse on the second midterm than the first. TLDR delusional professor avoid him.

Please don't take this course. TA's and the Professor not only suck at teaching but are ignorant, they dont take criticism well when they're students tell them theyre doing a terrible job. If you do poorly on the first midterm. DROP. dont try and be a hero, I tried and failed, so as many others. GG's to my GPA, please dont take this class, Cheers!

Our final exam was half empty (lots dropped out). Prof is bad, (some) TAs are worse. Never heard of a TA who enjoys giving students low grades. Our midterm average was below 40% and it was our fault. Could write a book about how bad this class was. Especially as a first-year course, it scared the living hell out of many. Quality of learning = 0/10

I dont even have words to explain how terrible this class is. The final exam was empty. I don't have enough fingers to count how many students were staring off into nothing with blank pages. He makes us buy an 100 dollar textbook just to twist the questions in ways we've never even seen before. He probably won't even curve and find some excuse.

Walked into the final exam and was wondering why half the seats were empty when the exam was about to start. I believe around 60 people dropped out. Thank god cis2910 has a different professor that has years of teaching experience.Jarrett may have a phd and is an intelligent/knowledgeable person in this topic but some people should just never teach

I got a 77 but it was not easy and he is not a great prof his lectures are him just reading off the slideshow and his midterms and exams do not match what he would told the class. The 1st avg 30s, 2nd avg worse than 1st had to curve and final was tough better than 1 and 2 they had to curve so majority of class would pass the course and its hard

Worst teacher. Unfortunately, you can't avoid this unorganized teacher as you have to take CIS1910 and CIS2910 courses. Majority of his students have bad feedback for him.

Poorly planned and disorganized teacher, awful. Doesn't teach full context of the topic, you have to study and understand yourself. Doesn't listen to anybody, one of his own kind. Plays innocence after deceiving students. Dean has to take an action on his way of teaching.

Midterms well really bad, midterm1: 40ish avg, midterm2: 30ish avg had to curve for a 53 avg, the exam was really tough by the time of the final exam half of the class dropped. He is not great at teaching he may be a nice guy but as a professor he is not great i don't blame him he is just a researcher forced to teach us this course.
