Awesome TA. Plays music during class, doesnt talk down to students, gives out cell #, nice guy.
Had Jarvis for comparative politics a while back. He was very nice and enthusiastic. Always available for students and has a REALLY NICE smile. I wish he was teaching Methods!
He is a very nice young man, but he has a tendency to go off on all kinds of odd, but funny, tangents. Overall, I really enjoyed the class, but he was definitely not the easiest grader. For a graduate student, he also has the maturity level of an undergrad--which wasn't a bad thing.
ta 4 Intro to international relations. He was more informative than the actual professor of the class and he answered all of my emails within 30 minutes. He volunteered his cell phone number and I definitely woke him up a few times during the semester for help. I'M REALLY SORRY, but he never complained and treated everyone with respect. We love him
Somewhat hard grader. Asks too much of students on exams--specitic stuff. "Comes from a writing background" so he thinks he can crap all over your writing style on papers. He made class fun and interesting, but he seems to grade on too many subjective things.
VERY FAIR GRADER. ENTHUSIASTIC. LOVES TEACHING. LOVES HIS STUDENTS. VERY HAPPY AND BOUNCY.
He is LITERALLY a big kid and will climb over stuff and never sits still, BUT he is also a very knowledgable and has great metaphors for all of our assigned readings, theories, and authors. Very helpful.
HE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE STUDENTS LOVE HIM!
I wouldn't call him easy, but he is very fair. Also, he plays icebreaker bingo and I won a Marvel poster from him. Cool guy, but also a bit of a genius
Has too many tabs open on firefox, wears Abercrombie clothes and watches Anime. These are my only complaints because he was an amazing TA and he wrote the sweetest email to all of the students at the end of the year
Absolutely perfect. Fair, puts lazy students in their place, gets back to students, always available to talk--about anything, respectful of other TAs and the professor. Just an all-around nice guy.
He didn't get mad at me when I told him I hadn't been doing my reading. Instead, he sat me down and we talked about the readings for about 2 hours during his office hours. He truly cares about makingsure we know the material and about our well-being. He'll make a great professor soemday.
Happy, eager to teach, takes care of his students, makes learning fun, hilarious, mysteriously, cute ;). My favorite TA at northeastern
Very concise and helpful with course outlines and very clear about expectations. Very nice and funny. Makes learning fun and even the dry boring stuff interesting. Also, he's FIIIINNNNEEE :).
Jarvis Chen for President! He's not an easy grader, but--perhaps more importantly--he's a fair grader. If you put in the work, you get the grade. Admittedly, I didn't put in the work, but he was never short with me and took the time to help me figure things out in the library. He even bought me chai tea!
Simply the best. "nuff said.
The best TA at Northeastern. Liked by everyone: students, faculty, even library staff. Kind and gentle, smart and inspirational. Very fair, keeps us on track, and maintains control of his classroom.
If Jarvis was a frozen yogurt, he would be delicious.
This guy is the man. He is an excellent TA, very kind. His looks can also disarm anyone with a soul, so be careful.
Jarvis, or "Jarvz" is the man. Hilarious, informative, wears too much abercrombie and fitch, but an awesoem TA overall, definitely best i've had.
A better teacher than the professor, more informative than wikipedia, more handsome than George Clooney, Cooler than James Franco. The best!
Able to cover more in a single 1hour recitation section than the professor does in an entire week. Very concise, clear, and organized. His analogies are awesome (BEDPANS! DIRT FARMERS!). Great
Jarvy is awesome! He had an amazing way of connecting and relating to the students in a way that made me feel comfortable to approach him with any issues. He genuinely cares about our success and has a very unique way of making modern analogies with the material making it very understandable. He is a very fair grader and rewards you when due!
The best TA at Northeastern! Very nice, very easy-going, very helpful! This was my first semester at NU and he really made an impression on all of the kids. He genuinely cared about teaching and we could tell that he loved being in front of a classroom. WE LOVE JARVIS!
So helpful, understanding, cool, cute (can I say that?!), and funny. Makes everyone feel welcome. Makes sure everyone keeps up and is just super
Very honest and caring. Treats Students Well, ALWAYS available, gives out his cell phone, and the even offers his help when he runs into students around Boston. I actually once forgot my wallet while out one night and I ran into Jarvis on Newbury street. He actually gave me his CharlieCard and let me barrow it for the weekend. Stand up guy!
He's adorable and genuine cares. He HATES to fail students and will do everything in his power to make you understand the material.
VERY CLEAR on what he expects from students. Doesn't beat around the bush, honest. His lectures/presentations are off the wall amazing. Music, embedded movies, transition, all so very cool. I don't know why he isn't in engineering or something because he is so techy. Oh so cute to boot. ;)
He is the best. So genuine and fun. Gives great presentations. Very approachable.
Clear, concise, and very knowledgable. He's a real nice guy and is always available for his students. He's very sweet and seems to be nice to everyone. BEWARE: He is somewhat hyper! I cannot wait to take a class with him as the lead instructor in the future. Congrats on your PhD candidacy!
Love this guy!Very helpful and just a nice guy all around.
Excellent lecturer. Very clear and concise about what he wants from his students. Takes extra time outside of class to go over course content and even catches up students via skype. Great guy!
best professor I've had at Northeastern. Very clear and concise about his material. Super nice and really funny1
Very young to be a professor, but I think he's a PhD candidate. He was younger than most of the students in my summer master's quant class, but he had a lot of poise and confidence. Very charismatic and helpful to students. Excellent lecturer with great powerpoints and media in his classes. Will take from again, if possible.
Jarvis Chen is the man dont even think about it just take his class.
Great lecturer and is VERY HELPFUL. Attacks material from multiple points of views and with different ways to teach. Uses audio, video (posts them online as well so you can return to the material). He's the most bubbly professor I've ever had and really gets down on the students' level to teach them. I was anxious about the class, but he was great
Very nice guy with lots of flair for presentation and clarity. Gives students lots of opportunities to speak up and get a good grade, but DO NOT skip class as he has a VERY STRICT attendance policy. Miss more than two classes and you are in trouble. Regardless, I looked forward to seeing him every week. He really wants to make people smile.
Really tough on attendance and doesn't give extensions for papers. His final project ruined my weekend because it was due on a saturday.
I usually don't write reviews for professors, but I really think Mr. Chen deserves all the praise he gets. My job was starting to pile on work during the summer and I had to miss a couple of days in his summer class, but he told me to take care of my work and we had phone conferences on the days I missed so that I wouldn't fall behind. GREAT GUY!
Jarvis is one of the best professor's I've ever hard at Northeastern. He was actually my TA a few years back and he has grown so much as a lecturer. He is really passionate about teaching, breaks up the material in such a way that anyone can learn it, and keeps class interesting and light with lots of jokes and technology. Outstanding professor.
Hopefully Jarvis co-teaches this steamy class every semester. It's like a friggen sauna in that class. sooooooooooooo appealing and REALLY stimulating...
No one else teaches like he does. Very funny, super easy-going, clear as crystal, and extremely patient. I feel like he could teach statistics to a dog if he really wanted to.
Very straightforward transparent style of teaching. Super clear and helpful and tries really hard to teach what some may consider a dry subject (stats). Very entertaining and charismatic. Classes start with a mashup and end with an acoustic cover. HOW COOL IS THAT?Takes attendance VERY seriously, but loses track of time often. Overall, a great guy!
He's my favorite of all time. Great sense of presentation and has about a billion metaphors for every situation. He also brings his puppy to class! Just an honest and fun-loving guy. You can tell he loves being in front if an audience. Great professor, even greater guy.
Goes above and beyond for his students. I've never seen a professor prepare so much or care so much about his kids before. Genuinely wants everyone to do well. He's young, funny, and well-dressed. I hope that he will always love teaching and be as loved as he is this semester.
Outstanding professor. He puts an enormous amount of effort into his class. He is easy-going and but makes sure everyone has a good understanding of the material. Hope he'll teach more interesting courses than quantitative techniques in the future.
Professor Chen is the best! He loves teaching and he loves his students. He listens well, is really respectful, and really tries to make sure everyone understands the concepts. He even brought donuts to the library when we were all pulling all-nights (SORRY!) to finish his final paper. Just don't skip class. He will forever put you on his bad list
He's the best. The absolute best. Extremely nice and patient and takes a lot of care and effort to teach his students.
Professor Chen is the nicest professor I've ever had at Northeastern. He is extremely patient, helpful and well-dressed. I can tell that he really cares about his students and I wish him the best in his teaching in the future.
Jarvis is really honest and candid with his students and crystal clear with his lectures. I've never had a more dedicated professor. I missed a week of classes due to a family emergency and he skyped with me over the weekend for two hours to catch me up. Also, he looks so good in his little outfits. I love it when he adjusts his tie during class...
Jarvis is actually more challenging than he would lead you to believe. He comes off at very laid back, but I know that he actually pushes students more than your typical young professor. He basically made all of his students overhaul their final projects, but made them better for it. He's a very special lecturer and wish him the best in the future
Professor Chen is the best young professor I've ever had at Northeastern. He is energetic, helpful, fun, charismatic, and overall a joy to have in front of the classroom. Take him while you are able to because he will be leaving Northeastern after he finishes his PhD
BEST MATH-ISH CLASS, EVER. I am actually very math shy and was extremely nervous about taking statistics this summer, but Jarvis was very understanding and patient with me and my concerns. He really cares about his students and does not give up on them. I would recommend him to everyone.
I just had my first class with this notoriously loved professor and I can already tell that he is going to be super awesome! Jarvis is very kind, patient, FUNNY, and laid back. I talked to him after class about how I am a little anxious about computer use and math and he slumped down to my level (I'm short) and said "I will take care of you guys".
He's inspirational, gives 100%, is very entertaining, and down to earth. More like a big brother than a dusty lecturer. He really takes the time to listen to his students and you can tell that he really wants to be in class with us. Very funny, always cracking jokes, laid back, and overall a very nice guy. A fantastic lecturer.
Overall amazing person and amazing teacher.
Best professor at Northeastern-hands down. I enjoyed coming to class despite it being on Fridays because he kept things interesting and mixed it up with videos, powerpoints, discussions about projects etc. He's always in a great mood and loves getting to know his students.
My former professor just emailed our entire class from 2014 to invite them to his dissertation defense. What a guy! He still thinks of us after all of these years. We will always love and adore him for all the love he has showed us from the little things, like helping us with notetaking, to staying up late in the library to help us study. Thanks J!
Great professor. There is no one that makes a class as fun, interesting, and personal as he does. He feels like the cool older brother I never had instead of my professor. Always takes extra time to help, respects everyone, inspires us to do our best, and makes us laugh, cry, and smile all day long.
Prof Chen is so nice. He truly cares about his students, never insults our intelligence, and is very inspiration. He provides good feedback and never penalizes stupid little mistakes. He believes in being a good role model and is incredibly funny!
Very funny and kind. He's a real nice guy and cares a lot about his students. Readily gives out his phone number and will chat with you as long as you want on the weekends.
Professor Chen puts in so much time and effort into his classes. He provides PDFs of all of his lectures, creates online lectures when necessary and is 100% available for his students. I have a tough time with math and he spent two weekends on the phone with me for two hours at a time. Truly a dedicated teacher. He also dresses really nice. Cutie
Professor Chen is so great! You can tell he actually cares so much about his students and wants them to find a genuine interest in his class. Dresses nice, is very understanding, and is definitely one of the best professors at NEU.
Prof. Chen is a super nice guy and a solid prof. Your grade in the class is based off of 2 exams (administered online, open notes, internet, etc.) and 2 research papers. This class is really easy if you show up and complete the work. Jarvis really cares about his students and really wants them to have a good time but also wants them to learn.
Words cannot describe Jarvis, he is probably the funniest, most caring and interesting professor within the University. His unique personality leads to interesting classes and the work load is not as heavy. His flexibility with exams and papers deserve a recognition, I would take his class 100 times.
Really cares, loves teaching, and wants students to do well
My favorite person at Northeastern. So full of excitement, love, and life! He provides SO many different options for students to be graded. Write a paper or do a presentation. Afraid of exams? Write another paper instead. Want to write more? A long paper will be worth the grade of an assigned paper and an exam! Super flexible. Very helpful. <3
He is so helpful and caring. He spends so much time with his students going over everything and anything that they ask. MORE IMPORTANTLY, HE MAKES STATS FUN!!! I've taken both American Government and statistics with professor Chen and I cannot say enough about what a wonderful person he is. No joke, he makes my time at Northeastern better.
He is a nice professor, but he wastes lots of class time and does not spend lots of class time going over actual material.
Dr. Chen is so dedicated and patient with his students. There were times where a student would ask a question and I would roll my eyes, but he would just smile and go over something again. He really treats his students like adults and is truly dedicated to helping them learn. I don't think there is a single prof that cares as much as he does. Great
DR Chen is amazing. I was INCREDIBLY WORRIED about doing math and was so afraid of class at the beginning of the semester. From the very second he strolled into class with his pink blazer and Captain America t-shirt and a giant smile on his face, I knew he was going to be caring and helpful. I could not have taken this class with anyone else--LOVE!
Just take him! He cares so much about his students and really goes above and beyond for them. I was dealing with the death of my grandfather during the semester and Jarvis had me call him for weekly check ins. He was very candid about dealing with the death of his own father and has so much advice. We skyped lectures when I didn't feel well. A gem.
Guy is class
Professor Chen deserves a medal, a fruit basket and a hug for all of his work with me this semester. I was incredibly worried about his class and even emailed him a handful of times before class started about my concerns for the course. He assured me that everything will be awesome and gave me tons of feedback and assistance and now...I love math!
Nice person and very friendly but do not take this class if you want to learn anything. Class time was often wasted talking about completely unrelated topics. The assignments and tests were almost offensively easy and the grading was even easier. Left the class feeling like I knew nothing more about Quan Techniques than I did the first day.
Very helpful, caring, and the best guy. He takes so much time to answer questions and help us understand difficult concepts, makes class fun, and he clearly wants to be with us. You'd be surprised how many professors treat their students like cattle, while Prof Chen made us all feel like family.
OMG HE'S SO FUNNY AND CHARMING! I have have had a professor put in so much effort into classes. I do not think he would ever know this, but he saved my semester. I had a rough time with family stuff but he took so much time outside of class to help me with materials and just listening to my problems. Thank you Dr Chen. I'll miss you!
Prof Chen is simply a cool guy. Helps out in every way he can, makes everyone feel comfortable and makes our voices heard. There are no dumb questions and he wants everyone to succeed. I got into grad school with his recommendation and I'm doing statistics!!
Dr. Chen is incredibly helpful, caring, and really enjoys spending timer with students. He comes to class with a huge smile and just wants everyone to have a good time and lean, all without giving extraneous homework or tough tests. He believes in everyone finding their own way to learn a subject and to research their interests. He's great!
Dr Chen is awesome! He wrote my rec to grad school and I still talk to him from time to time about my career goals. He always has time for his students. He truly loves teaching and that is incredibly special
I LOVE JARVIS! He is inspiring, funny and just a super nice guy! Hope to see you again!
Super flexible and helpful! My dad was sick my last semester and Jarvis let me do all of his classes over skype. He would do his entire lecture all over again just for me! Don't pass up a chance to take his class!
Dr Chen is super friendly, supportive and funny! He works so hard to make statistic fun and exciting for everyone. We have a couple of virtual students in class via zoom and he always makes sure that they are included, despite everyone else being in person. If you can take a class with him, do it!
Jarvis is the most enthusiastic, helpful and understanding professor I have ever had at Northeastern. He makes the course fun to learn and makes the whole semester as stress free as possible.
Dr Chen is incredibly patient and caring. He makes himself available for students as often as possible and he clearly demonstrates a strong love for teaching. His love for teaching is inspiring
He made every assignment clear and doable, was immediately responsive to any emails/questions, and allowed for multiple extensions when given notice. This was my 1st grad class and was easier than most undergrad classes I took because Jarvis made it so much easier to understand. If you take INSH6300, Jarvis is easily the best option at Northeastern
