Prof. Harriss opened my eyes in many ways. She gets real about real life issues such as race, poverty, gender in- equality, etc. I have to say this is the most interesting & powerful class I have taken. The class was not hard, attendance & participation is mandatory, she takes role a lot. It is crazy how much some of views have changed.
She is a good professor and you really get interested by the topics. She makes you think about a lot of things and in my case, it also helped me to understand certain aspect of my own life. A really nice person.
For someone who is very pretty, Ms. Harris is no joke. Best advice: read the book. Her lecture notes are written with the assumption that you've already read the assigned chapters. Utilize her office hours and read the syllabus. She grades really hard on exams and papers, plus it takes a while until you get them back. PARTICIPATE Good Luck studying
She is very friendly and wants to hear from her students. She does give a lot of homework. Homework isn't too hard, just time consuming. She wants you to read from the book to tie her lectures together, but I never opened it. I just make sure to listen to the lectures and participate as much as possible and all my test so far have been B's.
Beware of this class you wont receive study guides for tests had to practically beg her for them. She wont post power points ahead of time she waits until she finishes a chapter sometimes 2 days before test. Also be prepared to not have your assignments graded, more than half my assignments are still not graded and the semester ends in 2 day
She is a nice teacher that means very well. I'll admit that her lectures can get a bit boring at times, but the discussions keep the class alive. If you put in some effort, visit her during her office hours, and go to class you'll do fine. Ms. Harris does take a while to grade things, but she is still a fair grader. Definitely would take again!
Ms. Harris is a pretty good teacher. However she takes FOREVER to grade your work and her lectures can be long. Her test aren't so bad if you read each chapter thoroughly and pay attention in class. What's nice about Harris is she wants her students to succeed in her class. It isn't hard to get an A if you actually put in the time and effort.
The percentage of your grade is evenly distributed by attendance, tests, papers, and assignments. The lectures are quite long, but very informative.
After the first chapter, this class gets very interesting and debates get intense! I enjoyed hearing Harris' lectures, even though they could get a little long. If you try hard, you will pass. If you hate reading, or don't usually purchase or rent the textbook, this class will be impossible.
She's a great person, the class is interesting, but I feel like her class is a drag sometimes. Her lectures can be longer than necessary. She grades her essay pretty much check-list format. And there are no extra credit opportunities.
Since I didn't do well in my Psychology, Sociology was suggested by my Uncle and my Grandmother. If I could have, I would have taken this instead when I took Psychology my second semester.
Professor Harris was very helpful. She wants everyone to succeed and gives second chances. I felt like her due dates and what is expected of you could have been more clear which was a huge problem for me. The tests were relatively easy, I got an average of a high B on them and i didn't even buy the textbook.
Over all, I truly enjoyed the class. She is very thorough and can relate to your personal life situations. I felt very comfortable talking with her and she was very supportive and worked with me. She is business and I respect that!!!!!! I learned a lot and enjoyed the discussions she presented. She tried to make things upbeat for the class.
This class is a beast. Going in I had a tough time getting the hang of it, but if you just buckle down and do the work, you'll be fine. Intimidating at first, confusing at times, but nothing impossible by any means. This is the first class I've taken at DVC during which I really felt like I was in a college level course, Harris makes you work.
Her power points are too long. She doesn't give you an exact grade only an estimate. If she showed her personality more and engaged the class that way, then this class would be more enjoyable.
She is very unorganised, and doesn't mark work on time. She is a nice person though.
Mrs. Harris was overall a nice and understanding professor. Her lectures had a lot of good information about the chapters, but sometimes it still made no sense. What I disliked about her class is that she wouldn't ever really go into detail about what to do for our essays and she never gave out study guides for the tests.
Your syllabus is very important, you have to refer back to it for due dates for assignments. Ms. Harris is a very nice person and is willingly to help you in anyway possible.
Rating her is an actual assignment on the syllabus. When people are forced to take surveys they tend to chose the socially acceptable answer. Nothing of what I saw on RMP translated to the classroom. Very nice teacher, definitely tell that teaching was not her priority and we the students suffered. Last semester people loved her I don't see why.
I took the Sociology 120 class with Professor Harris and the class was not very hard, but I wouldn't take it again. There is usually a power point lecture every day which gets boring. Professor Harris tried her best to answer any questions the class brought up. She is understanding and will grant essay extensions for legitimate excuses.
Her main focus never involves her students, she may want us to succeed, but doesn't know how to approach it. She grades assignments at the last minute, claims she incorporates different teaching styles, then doesn't. She may be excellent in her other job, but this is clearly not her priority. The Ted Talks were the most informative, if anything.
I really enjoyed some of the moments in class like when we talked about important issues happening in the world today or things from the past, they were really interesting. But her way of teaching was very vague and especially her instructions on assignments, all very vague as well. Lectures became repetitive and got quite boring, but nice teacher.
She will explain things and help you if you ask for it. It is annoying that you don't really now your grade, she only gives you an approximate. To pass the test I would highly recommend reading the book and pay attention in class. There are 8 TED Talks, 2 papers, 1 offsite group project, and 3 tests. Attendance is necessary to pass.
Very nice lady and has a good heart. Teaching wise.. could use some improvement. Ted Talks are tedious and unnecessary. Grades not given back within two weeks, lectures too long. Overall she has very good intentions.
Very clear about what she expects and while it might not be the easiest class if you do what she asks (which is definitely manageable) its going to help your GPA.
Very helpful and made things easy and clear to understand. Always helped remind us of important dates, scheduled times for meetings with students who needed help, and gave a sense of familiarity to me instead of a strict, stereotypical college professor. Very good teacher, would love to have again.
I enjoyed learning from her just freely talking in class and holding impromptu discussions, rather than from the PPTs. Tests are easy if you study the material in the lectures & book, but are worth VERY little and it can be tedious. Overall, she is a kind person and always willing to help, and you can tell that she is passionate about socio. :)
I enjoyed her as my teacher. I feel she did what she could to prepare us for our tests with detailed lectures and reviewing but the class she had was very quiet and didn't put forth a lot of effort. I think she is a good teacher and i would take her again .
She's a really good professor, very opinionated and she makes that very clear but she knows a lot about sociology and even if you have a different opinion she will respect you.
I liked how she taught the class because she incorporated real life scenarios throughout every lecture. Easy class and very interesting but be prepared for non-multiple choice tests.
She's a really good teacher. Knows what she's doing , very into her subject. Need to be in class!! She is willing to help but you have to ask. Stay on top of your reading. And study for the test or you'll pay for if you don't. Overall fun and educational class would take again with her.
She was a very sweet passionate teacher. If you wanted to have extra time with her to ask any questions about the class, there was always office hours available which was helpful. She was strict towards her due dates. If you missed something, there was no way she could help you make it up. Overall she made everyone in class feel comfortable.
She gave me clear feedback on my essay, and it was helpful, but there is no make up for any late work assignment that you should beware of it. Participation matters and there are some group works for this class.
great teacher! taught us many sociological concepts. explained each concept well with her power points. tests are just a little tough.
I think this is a good introductory class that exposes you to basic concepts of sociology. Some theories that she heavily emphasized and tested on were over simplified which made it difficult for some students to have a confident grasp on material. Her lectures got better throughout the semester with more relevant examples and events.
Had a great experience with Ms. Harris, very laid back and she is helpful, her power points and lectures are very straight forward. Attendance is mandatory and she takes role often. She does not warn you when assignments are due, so make sure you keep track. Easy A if you participate.
Professor Harris is a wonderful teacher and does everything in her power to get us to learn the material but she has a lot of outside work. Also the tests can be challenging and she is tough on grading.
I thought it was entertaining.
Wonderful teacher and very understanding, but a tough grader. She also makes you do a group project outside of class which was a little hectic.
Overall Ms. Harris was always asking us to ask questions if we did not understand which was very helpful. But for our essays the directions for them are not very clear and I feel like that is what she needs to focus on the most. And also for the tests it would have been helpful to have a study guide because there is so much information to know.
She is a nice teacher with good intentions but the class lessons are not very clear. You will not receive an actual grade, you will get an estimated grade. Participation is a big part of your grade. The papers you are assigned do not have clear instructions.
Ms. Harris was inspiring and a very influential teacher. Her lectures were interesting and she always challenged us and our perspectives. A teacher that challenges their students and opens their minds, I definitely can respect. Although she is a tough grader, It will only benefit you in the end. You will take a lot from her class.
I enjoyed the class, thought she had a awesome personality, passionate in her work. Expect to participate in class discussions, it will help for test.
Always willing to help during office hours. Lectures basically every class, but there are discussion that pop up about real life situations that make the class a lot more interesting. It would have been nice to have study guides for the exams. Participating in class discussions can really help prepare you for the exams.
Professor Harris is a wonderful person with good intentions but seems to have a lot of outside influences that affected our class. Clear, easy to follow lectures. If you read the book you'll do fine on the tests. Interesting content she relates to modern examples.
Most of the class was spent discussing students thoughts and ideas on the topics and we mostly glossed over the actual class material. When we did go over sociological theories I felt she didn't explain them as well as she could and I often went back to the book to relearn the things she taught in class.
She is good at teaching, not too hard to understand her main point of subject that she taught.
She is overall a very nice teacher. Sometimes her lectures get boring but are clear.
Everything is kinda slower than what it is said in the syllabus, you have to learn at home too to catch up with what happened in the class. Ms Harris is not really strict but she does not accept late work.
not so good not so bad in this class has a quiz and essay she is nice person
her lecture is clear and giving specific example of what we are learning in the class. about assignments, she does not accept any late assignments.
Her quiz is a kind of difficult, but answers are always in her lectures. So if you listen to her talking carefully, quiz is not gonna be so hard.
Good and nice teacher but you need to learn how to write an essay before taking this course.
She is a great teacher. Even if I ask her many questions, she spend much time for me to make me understand clearly. Quiz is every week and it is a bit difficult for me. However, her lecture is really clear, so you can understand if you pay attention in class.
It would be fun if people come into discuss, I would suggest preview the book before the class, her speed is really fast and she would spend time on discuss rather than teach concepts and theories, I think her idea is teaching us how to think by sociological imagination instead of remembering.
Give some interesting examples.
she is good teacher!!
This teacher cares if the class understands well to everything and she tries to explain what she says in many different ways. She is willing to explain even the meaning of some words which students don't know - I find this very helpful as an international student. I can say this teacher is respectful, friendly and caring. No late work accepted!
Great professors!
Pretty good professor, very patient and friendly. As long as you can follow her steps, you can get A. No late work accepted.
cant skip classes lecture to boring class is sleepy
She is a great professor. She offers many examples of her lecture, but the more the better. after noon time period often makes the students feel tired and want to sleep. Thus, professor should have activities to make students more interested in the lectures.
The test is a little bit hard. If the different question with different grade, it will be better.
A great professor. Can give lots of examples to make students understand. But the class was kind of boring.
Great professor! Kind and patient!
This is my first class at DVC. Ms. Harris is really nice and humorous. Her power points are clearly, and she always give us examples about the definition. Because of Bridge Program we just have eight weeks classes. We have quiz every Thursday, but not too difficult. That are all about what we learnt that week.
Hi Ms. Harris! I'm so glad to have you in my first college semester. You're an awesome professor and your lecture inspired me and help me understand the American society a lot. However, I hope the grading system will be improved better later. That's it. Thank you Jasolyn! All the best!
Professor Harris is very patient, if you have some question she can answer very clearly.
She is a great professor. Harris is very nice. If you have any questions she can help you a lot.
This is good class to join in. she's so patient and hotttttt I like her so much! There for you!
nice lecture, and graded quiz in fair way
good teach attitude in class
Ms. Harris was a good lecturer throughout the course. She can be humorous and expects active engagement.
Miss Harris is a fun and exciting teacher. Aside from the long lectures, I actually enjoyed her class. The tests aren't too hard and the grading seems fair.
I've learned much more than the lecture. Ms. Harris respects every student's comments and ideas, and I love the way she makes us think critically. As an international student, I also get to know more about American culture by the class. Ms. Harris follows the syllabus which let us be well prepared, and also the grading is clear!
Ms Harris's classes are good overall, quiz every week.
The lectures she gave is long but will really be helpful for the quizzes at the end of the week. The tests are just quizzes which are kind of easy to get full marks on it. She grades our papers very lenient.
Long lectures are to be expected. But overall it is a very fun class to attend.
I think the interesting aspect is at the beginning of the class, teacher will give us some question to discuss.
She is nice, be sure you study for the quiz.
Profesor Jasolyn Harris really knows her subject. She is academically prepared and that show she's got good education throughout university which is great because she clarify all the person's doubts about the subject. Ms Harris also listen and encourage participation a lot. She is very respectful and opened mind. I really enjoy taking her classes.
She is clearly stating our grades in class and what to expect from our grades. She like to laugh. her class is something you can breath and be at ease.
She is a nice teacher, but the class is just a little bit boring. Her class is not much homework.
She is a nice teacher, but our class doesn't very active.
she is clear in her lectures and helps others out whenever she can
She is an amazing Professor and very nice. This class would always go by fast because the material was really interesting. This class challenges you to think outside the box. Attendance is key, because there is a a lot of material covered in one class as well as quizzes every class. She is great!
class was very enjoyable. professor is great.
If you are looking for a class that is interesting, informative, and easy, then I suggest taking SOC 120 with Harris
Professor Harris is a very cool teacher, she is up to date on current events and will tie them into the class making it very fun. Her lectures are clear and she is a very lenient grader.
Professor Harris is very nice and approachable. She is willing to help you if you do your part as a student. Be sure to not be absent because you'll have to do extra reading on your own and might not be able to understand the lesson.
Loved this class! Learned so much from this professor. Strongly recommend!
She's a very passionate teacher, who is very caring about her students. But you do have to remember things in your own because she will not tell you and her weekly quotes are a bit tough.
She is a really good teacher, I loved this class.
Needs just some of clarification on her power point and d2l assignments. You don't need the book just follow her notes will be from the notes you take after her. She doesn't have exams only quizzes every lecture about what she covered the lecture before. If you do the work you will get a good grade. I will defiantly take Ms. Harris again :).
There is a quiz every week but its easy because it's related to the topics from the class discussion if you were present that day. The good thing about quizzes every week is that there will be no final exam and just a group presentation on finals week. No need for the book.
Professor Harris is a really kind and intelligent woman, however a bit disorganized and can be unclear about what she wants you to do for her assignments or tests
Make sure you review the powerpoint and come into class. She is very nice and will give you good feedback. Read the book and do the assignments in class.
Miss Harris's class was interesting and she's a really great person to listen to. She provides a lot of feedback and definitely is easy to communicate with. I enjoyed this class and it made it an even better experience because it is very clear she is passionate about this subject.
It was a great class to take.
great class to take over summer. challenging and interesting without being overwhelming.
She knows what she's talking about and seems to really like the subject. Discussion were the best part of the class just wish she knew when to end them and continue with the lecture.
Very good teacher!! Made lectures very engaged and personal. I have never been a fan of discussion but being in this class really opened my eyes to many different social perspectives and current events. Assignments were do-able and she is a lenient graded. Would recommend this class!
Cool teacher, has a great sense of humor on everything
Awesome teacher and while the first few lectures/topics were boring, the class material picks up and becomes interesting. Lots of cool movies and videos we watched, all people should take this class
Really good spirit and really helped me enjoy the class
Enjoyed the course
Very very easy
Lectures can get boring but good professor
although this class is fairly easy i would advise you to read the neccessary chapters
I took this course over the summer. 1 paper, 3 assignments, class work, and a midterm and final that only counted for 20% of your grade. She's very nice and I feel like I learned so much in that class without it being too much work. I recommend taking this course!
Very passionate, easy grader.
This course was an average introductory course. I would have preferred to have the lectures be more prepared and her grading criteria to be more specific. Overall, it was a fair course. You will get the grade you deserve based on your effort.
Could do a lot better on grading and posting assignments quicker. Doesnt really show how she grades things. Not exam heavy at all. Easy class, a lot of participation and takes attendance. Would recconmend
The class wasn't very interesting to me, but it was fine. Test were not worth enough in my opinion.
I took socio 120 during her summer class, so there wasn't much time to learn material. She states the first day she has ADD, which causes her to be distracted & run on tangents or class discussions rather than going over material needed for tests. It can be frustrating. All questions on exams are worth the same amount of points. Paper is worth 30%
Really interesting and a great professor. Definitely makes you think from a different perspective. Her tests are not multiple choice, but are fair. I took her summer course and I learned a lot.
Shes amazing and shes cares about the issues that goes on in society. Attentdence is not mandatory but you will miss important materials if you skip out on class
Very engaging class
She's a good teacher but sometimes she's hard to follow
Although this class is fairly easy i would advise you to read the neccessary chapters in order to pass the tests.
It was alright, usual PowerPoint heavy class.
This class was pretty interesting, the content was very relevant to what is going on in our society today. Reading is not necessary but can be very helpful. Lots of note taking and videos during class.
Take this class is easy as long you take notes and read the notes she is cool and easy going professor take it
Overall, I've had learned from this class, every inspirational; makes me proud to become a teacher and be able to make an impact on the world and society we live in today!
Great teacher, if you want to take sociology definitely take care. She puts most of her information on her presentations which makes it easy to pass her tests. Yet, her tests are written (only two tests during summer) but again they're easy because she covers all the information. She knows what she is talking about, would take a again!
She's a great professor. Her lecture is pretty interesting. Besides that paper is worth 30%, the class is easy. You are gonna get A if you try!
I enjoyed this class, I learned a lot about current events in an environment that was positive and respectful to everyone. The teacher is pleasant and friendly and is knowledgeable about her subject.
Ms. Harris is awesome! Her class is easy. You just have to do some homework. I love that she plays videos about our society which you can learn a lot from them.
Ms. Harris uses PowerPoints for all of her lectures. She will post them on D2L afterwards. She expects participation and gives mini group assignments in class as a way to receive credit. She does not look down on students for having views that are different than her own. She is willing to admit if she made a mistake in grading and is very fair.
Great teacher! Outlines the grading criteria well! Lectures A lot! With power points not a whole lot of reading. Super nice and genuine!
Ms. Harris brought me a new insight on the understanding of society. Tests are easy and all the information is on the book and lectures. Essays are decently sized typically 3-5 pages long. Overall, Ms. Harris is a good teacher to learn sociology from.
She really relates all the material to current events and really opens your eyes to things that occurring right in front of us .
This class I defiantly understood because I took another socio class and failed because I didn't understand but taking this class and how she taught made it way easier and made me question why I didn't understand the other teacher. She is a great teacher I defiantly recommend her.
She was a great teacher and gave straight forward lectures with a lot detail. You should use your book but you can get by with reading just your notes. Also you watch a lot of cool videos that help you understand the topics your learning and there's class discussions as well.
I have learned so much in this class, and I feel like I'll be able to look back on the material and use it in the future. I recommend 11/10. She's a great professor and the class is definitley one to remember! :)
Learned so much in the class! I gained a lot of knowledge from her. Her lectures are very intense and not boring!
Good teacher, very passionate about the subject. It was an interesting class
Ms. Harris is very respectable teacher who is open minded and caring towards her students. She is knowledgeable about current events and discusses them within the class. Participation does matter. Textbook wasn't really used, just pay attention during lecture and take notes.
She's very passionate and shares information that make a lot of people feel uncomfortable but speaks the truth. Great teacher.
Overall good teacher, I think she lets students talk too much in class though. I was so tired of hearing the same 3 people every day in every single lecture. Other then that, I learned a lot from her. Make sure to read!!!
Wish more people participated, makes for a livelier class.
Lecture that pull out the most important ideas from the book but it is still helpful to have the book for studying purposes. Test are a mix of multiple choice, short answer and free response.
Great teacher, must show up to lectures if you don't want to read your textbook. The textbook is actually pretty helpful but not necessarily. There's only one group project but it's easy. This class makes you think outside the box, but also its common sense.
Opened my eyes
I thought the class was a little too much about the black lives matter movement more so than sociology. Not that i have anything against it. But I wish the class was more so about every aspect of sociology rather so than just race.
Great teacher.
The class was mostly lectures, with videos and discussions woven. Ms. Harris was very articulate and expressed sociological concepts clearly. Even more, she challenged us to question why things were the way they were in society.
Daily lectures, very focused on current social issues. Average difficulty.
Her lectures are phenomenal, and very engaging. She covers the chapters very well during lecture, and posts her lectures online. She does a great job of clarifying chapter concepts and relating them to the real world. If you want to get your grade back faster for assignments, turn in hard copies!!!
This was a very informative and interesting class.
Your An awesome professor and I am so glad to have taken Sociology class with you! Hopefully i will see you again sometimes next summer! You will be missed!
She is really funny and makes long lectures enjoyable.
She will change your POV.
She changed the way i see society
This was an excellent way to learn this issue from a professor who really cares about it.
She changed the way i see the world
She's a very good and straight foward instructor. Very respectful and makes clear what's expected from you. Her class is very laid back and interesting :) as long as you show up to class, participate, and do the work you'll receive a good grade. I loved her!!
Good teacher.
Inspirational teacher. Enjoyed the class.
Ms. Harris is a genuinely great human as well as a professor at DVC. She has a true passion for passing awareness and knowledge onto her students as we cover the chaos of reality that is sociology 120. She's probably the most respectful and understanding professor I've encountered and class participation definitely made my experience feel wholesome
Prof. Harris has been one the best professor I ever have had. My summer classes were amazing with her. I got a lot knowledge of American society and things which are happening around the world; furthermore, she made herself very understandable and her classes were very active. She loves us as students to participate in class and make them dynamics.
She's the best! I learned a lot from her and now I have a different perspective on life! Take her ;)
