Very very opintionated, he takes first impressions until the end of the year..so suck up, he hates students that are late and students that miss classes
Agreed: Opinionated, and is no better than he should be.
tends to pick favorites, slightly moody
Get him to tell you his life story, makes up for the rest of the short stories.
Good guy, good teacher, interesting opinions! I liked what he had to say.
Nice enough sometimes, but picks favorites and can be moody and sometimes mean. Hard marker. It was OK.
"I'm a realist". Has an opinion of anything and everything. Thinks he is better than everyone else and that he is always right. HE is very monotone and has no expression. Good Luck!
He is a very funny teacher
Almost too opinionated, will tear your work apart, and leaves all major and time consuming assingnments until the last three weeks of class... when you're studying for you other courses that actually have exams... I wouldn't take his class again.
Opinionated, moody, picks favourites.Very important: biggest assignments are left to the end of the semester, when you're swamped with finals and worn out.Don't recommend this class, although the man is interesting and definitely has led quite the life.
Scares the hell out of me
While he may be opinionated, who isn't? If you aren't secure enough in your own opinions, that's your problem. Great teacher. Really prepares you for the outside world. One college class I am going to miss and a class I recommend anyone to take. Too much work near finals? Should have it done earlier
very scary......

His classes are very real-world relevent. I have learned a lot in his class. He is very moody and scary, which I consider to be his only downfall as a teacher.
He does't care about the students. He talks about himself all the time. Never returns papers even though he is adament that a paper is handed in on time (minutes count). Be prepared to live in fear if you take his class.
He's an awesome guy! He really knows his****, but as far as teaching goes...not so much. He's a real joker & fun guy, but if english isn't your first language, or if you don't pick up on sutle humour, you may not really understand him. He's a tough marker to a degree (not as hard as Igwe), but he's doing it for your benefit.
Very hard marker. I would not suggest taking his class if english is not your first language unless you are strong with it. For those who do take this class -- You will learn AMAZING real world skills. It was probably my fav class in university so far.
A Salesman, overbearing, pompus...
I liked him.
One thing Jason does a great job of doing is making his students feel like idiots. He is incredibly bias, an unfair marker, and likes to talk about himself. One thing I will give him credit for is his knowledge in sales. This sales background, however, does not qualify him to be a good university english proffesor. Avoid Jason like the plague.
Jason is the most unconsistent prof I have had. He can be motivating and encouraging one day, and a huge jerk the next. His rating scale varies depending on what kind of mood he is in, which I found incredibly stressful.
Hilarious! Very opinionated though.
interesting teacher.. don't know how else to describe him. he has given me a new insight to life and hopefully it will get me far and for that i just want to say thank you for believing that i can make it to what i really want. Fantastic teacher.
Good Luck.
Very biased. Plays favourites. Would not reccomend...
The most egosentric teacher I have ever met. He speaks of proffesionalism but rarely practices what he preaches. Calls students out in class as well as degrades you in front of your peers. Very unfair marker and will never give you the last work. Unapproachable and overbearing.
Uber conservative and will provoke some people, but keep in mind that he WANTS you to challenge him. He likes it when students voice their opinions and think(but be ready to back them up). He's a pretty tough marker but fair. Good sense of humor. On a side note, he's a big music buff and will drop references all the time, catch them if you can.
Has extreme difficulty following class outline and prefers arguing his opinions on church and state. Easily distracted by social debate. In-class debate has been known to border on verbal harassment. Occasionally does not review homework given. Does not provide adequate feedback on essays. Frequently arrives late. Shows favouritism. Not recommended
As a 4th year English student, i have to say this class was terrible. This man is so full of himself, and loves to push his students out of their comfort zone. His marking scheme is unclear and you can't argue for a higher grade. He thinks a B- is worth going out to celebrate. You have been warned, if possible, take R. Nash's 229 class.
soooo bad!!!!!
he tries to offend almost everyone in the classroom every class. tries to be controversial, but does so much too aggressively. i recommend if you have a choice between this guy and Dr. Mark Wallin take Wallin's class's he is a much better and more interesting tearcher.
He needs to get over himself. But brings up interesting conversations.
If you like feeling like an idiot, being called out on everything you do, and like having piercing looks directed at you... this class is for you. He is very stuck up. Useless teacher... never taking any class with a chance of having him again.
Terrible. His textbook choice is awful. His idea of teaching is telling the class to read a chapter, do the assignments and uses group work in lieu of teaching. He is more concerned with getting people to react to his over the top statements then in teaching properly. He doesn't mark fairly, he expects students to write like the author of the text.
Great professor, interesting and engaging. Very relevant and useful real-world advice. My only problem is not getting grades and assignments back fast enough. I need feedback before i move on to the next assignment and it took way too long to get things back.
Picks favorites and always has to insult everyone of his students. Avoid him at all costs, probably will be put on probation soon!!
He was an sincere and engaging teacher for my first class with him in sept of 09. Took a bit of a turn to the dark side after a divorce later that same year.
An awful teacher who has his favourites and picks on anyone else. Avoid him at any cost unless you are the best student in his class.
Best English teacher ever. He's hilarious and actually cares about his students. The work load is not bad at all. There is no huge research report or unnecessary work.
hilarious and fair grader
Some struggle in his class, and he's not gonna sugar-coat what he thinks of your work. That being said, he knows what he's talking about and cares about his students' success. Read the textbook and ensure your assignments comply with what it says and you can easily get %100 on any given assignment...try to BS it, and you'll probably fail it.
A lot of group work but overall good teacher
Excellent professor. Jason is a genuine person who sincerely cares about his students. He prepares you for real life, and doesn't sugar coat everything. If you attend class, pay attention, and do your all assignments, an A+ is easy to achieve in this class. I would recommend him to anyone!
Jason really cares about his students and their success, but has a horrible way of displaying it! If you apply yourself and make an effort during in class discussions and homework, you will be one of the most successful students in his class. If you are a person that likes to debate, this is the professor for you!
Bermiller is a real genuine prof. He comes by as an arogant and opinated person, but he is very good to his students. The class is fairly simple and straightforward, and the A is insight if you do the little bit of work he asks for. He makes it clear an A is achievable. He doesnt grade assignments on time ever, but it didnt bother me too much
Jason is a very lazy prof. You get your work handed back to you 3-4 weeks after you hand it in. He thinks he is God and always says he is very helpful but that's not true. The course itself is fairly easy but he is not a very likeable prof. Midterm is super easy just take notes when he writes things down on the board!
Weird guy. Don't argue. Accept his idea and repeat it. Follow his lead and you'll do great. Be out-going and talk to him off the record (ie. mediation/ blue-ray player, movie topics). Once you're his "friend" you'll be a great student. Read material before class and talk to him. If you don't talk, he'll shut you out.
Very arrogant as a person, discusses way too much about social debates without realizing that he is wasting precious class time. Not a fair marker.Be cautious and read the text book rather than going solely on his class work.Keep him as your last option as he is not that helpful.
not helpful very bad, never take a classes with him and won't recommend him to anyone. he doesn't teach he just give a stories about his life
He makes it quite clear that he's there teaching us to help us succeed. He's a hilarious teacher. Also, if you respect him by showing up to class and doing the work, he will reciprocate the respect back. His assignments are fairly challenging but throughout the year he shows us how to easily get an A. I've learnt a ton from him.
Good teacher. His course will help along life.
Jason is the most disrespectful prof I have ever had. He is extremely arrogant. He is very rude and condescending to students and if you disagree with him then he will talk down to you the whole semester. He is extremely manipulative. His marking is very unprofessional. On one of my assignments he commented "Ugh." Extremely unnecessary.
Jason Bermiller is the most disrespectful professor I have ever had. He is condescending to students and has a very confusing teaching style. He stresses that we read the textbook, but tells us the textbook is wrong during lecture. If you disagree with him, he will berate you. He will find anything to make you think you're wrong. Just an awful prof
Jason's class is my favourite and I look forward to attending it every day. It can get a little personal but I have never felt awkward or out of place. You can tell he loves what he teaches because it is really enjoyable to listen to his lectures. He loves involving the class and is very funny.
Let me break this down for you: Tests: Incredibly useless, just memorization of key points without understanding. Prof: Unhelpful, tries to provoke students, arrogant, needlessly critical. "Nice" isn't a word this man knows. Lectures: Not helpful at all. You're better off to just spend your time reading the $240 textbook. Avoid at all cost!
Will humiliate you if you disagree with him. Independent thought and ideas are not only useless in his classes but must be Thrown away in order to pass. Also remember that if you don't look the way he wishes he will also humiliate you in front of the class.
This man is the most disrespectful, arrogant, obnoxious professor I've ever come across to. His way of marking is pathetic! Never argue with him or he will humiliate you in front of the class. Useless, does not come prepared to teach, only goes through the book. TRU WASTES MONEY ON THIS? That's seriously shame for our money.
Nothing useful out of course. He talks about his past experience, which doesnot really help us because conditions have changed. Take this course online.
Funniest guy at the school, no doubt about it. If he hurts your feelings, well then, you probably deserved it. Will say he's a tough marker but it doesn't take much effort to get the A
He seems like a down to earth person, and he can be funny depending on his mood. He definitely favours students. When it comes to assignments he's very vague, and he gives little feedback. He gives out so many assignments! and a lot of questions from the book. To pass his tests study from the book. I don't think he cares much about the students
The best professor i have come across in my life! He rocks. So lucky to have him as a tutor.
Can't believe TRU hired this man and how he is still teaching here. His intentions may be good, says he tries to make the class more enjoyable with his humour but it crosses the line on a daily basis. He's very rude to students and if he doesn't like you you can't count on getting a good grade. Doesn't post criteria. JUST AVOID THIS PROF.
Avoid this guy at all costs. Rude, insulting, and gets a kick out of making fun of students. Jason has a huge ego, which is evident from the first class you take with him. This guy tries hard to be funny and liked, but he just comes off as arrogant. TRU needs to get rid of this guy, or make him go to therapy sessions; he could really use them.
I have mixed views on Jason as a professor. Jason is very smart and knowledgeable about certain subjects because of his past experiences. On the other hand, he comes off as very moody and standoffish during lectures. Do your work, try your best, and hand things in on time; you will be fine. I find his office hours more helpful then his lectures.
I'm not sure why TRU still has this guy around. Jason is a smart guy, and he tries to prove it every single class. If you disagree with him, keep it to yourself. His assignments aren't too hard, you just have to put in the work to do well. Pay attention to his lectures, do all the assignments, and try to get on his good side by participating.
After having Jason twice, my opinions on him are the same from the first time I had him. Jason in class is very condescending, out spoken, and vulgar. Jason outside of class is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I highly recommend talking to him in his office for help, since he is more useful there compared to any of his classes.
My biggest complaint about Jason all semester was how hard it was to get a hold of him for booking appointments or asking questions via email/Moodle. I found that the lectures were pretty useless, since he tested us on the material from the text. I can see why Jason turns people off,, but he is a nice guy and he does care in his own way.
Definitely have mixed feelings about Jason. Nice enough guy but fairly arrogant, super super vague criteria on papers and projects. Calls people out for stupid reasons completely humiliating them. Really difficult to get ahold of outside of class. Probably wouldn't take him again.
Constantly late for class, assignments lack proper criteria and extreme variations on how things are graded. Constantly causes students to feel dumb for answers or questions asked. Overall would avoid if possible.
Constantly late for class! I have never had a professor, who on average, comes to class 10 to 15 minutes late. Do you need to get a hold of him outside of class? Good luck with that. Jason rarely responds to emails/moodle messages in a timely manner. Oddly enough, his assignments were fairly easy. Despite the very vague criteria that he gives out.
If you want an easy A don't take a class with him. I enjoyed the class with him but he has his criteria which you have to follow. Be ready to be nice and polite to him and never argue.
For a 6 week summer course, I felt that Jason didn't really care about the class that much. His lectures were interesting, yet sometimes off of the main points from the syllabus. My major complaint came from his marking, which seemed to be slapped together with unhelpful comments and suggestions. Jason actually wrote "ugh" as a comment.
This was my second course with Jason, and I really regret taking the 6 week summer class with him. I found that this class was really put together by however Jason was feeling that particular day. Class time was not fully used, instructions for assignments were broader than I remember of his in the past, and it took forever to get our marks back.
Jason is not a bad guy; he is just not a very good professor. His marking schemes are very unique, his criteria for assignments is broad, and he is hard to get a hold of out of class. Jason tries to be nice, but his the off topic, "back hand" comments could do. I am giving him a low rating based on how difficult it is to contact him out of class.
Jason is an interesting guy... His mood changes from class to class, and his criteria for assignments is odd. I wouldn't recommend taking a class wth him, since his attitude can turn a lot of people off. Good luck getting a hold of him out of class, and the same goes for his office hours. Follow his criteria on his assignments to do well.
Very sarcastic, shares his biases, and isn't afraid to offend people. One thing you'll notice is that his mood greatly affects what answers he thinks are correct in class. Going through examples what isn't considered right one class will be called fine the following class reviewing the same question. If you can take a different professor try to.
Jason is a very great teacher I loved the stories he told, I felt it helped me grow as a person but his tests were a bit unorganized. he does seem very passionate about his course but very argumentative, other than that the class was good.
Jason is honestly the worst teacher you will ever have. He will make you wake up and absolutely dread having to go to school. He treats students as if we are in middle school, and will belittle you infront of the class if given the chance. If there is any way to avoid his class, please listen to this and DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
I had Jason for a course this past summer, and I definitely have mixed feelings on him. His lectures were fine, even though each class was very different, and we often went away from the syllabus. His marking schemes were super hard to follow, since you never really knew what Jason expected from you for each assignment.
amazing teacher.. always like his class.
This class is hard. Jason doesn't give a clear rubric and so it is hard to understand what he is looking for in his papers. USE THE WRITING CENTER for his class (huge help). Even though he is a hard marker he improve my writing skills a lot. Once you know the concept, you know it!
I have mixed feelings about him
HATED THIS PROF. rude to students, constantly voicing political and person opinions about irrelevant things. awful marking and commenting on final paper. I received the comments "ugh" and "come on"
There is not a single positive thing I can think of when it comes to talk about Jason. This is how I will rate Bermiller - -10/10 TRU got some worst professors like Bermiller.
Jason is a great guy. Nobody ever understood his grading criteria. If 2 people have similar written content, one would get 77 while the other would fail. So it's impossible to guess what you'll get on your assignments. His mid-terms are totally easy. Just follow what he wants in his lectures. Note down what he asks you to note down.
Worst teacher ever!!! If you can avoid him DO IT
You can get a good grade as long as you follow his instructions by the book(literally). He gives homework regularly and goes through the textbook too. He gives the pointers using which you can score well in assignments and the midterms are easy. He may be opiniated, but he does care for students and tried to give real life knowledge in class.
The worst professor I have ever seen in my whole life. A good piece of advice would be to better not take his course or if you have taken it just drop it. It's not even worth it.
I would never take a course with him again he makes his lecture sounds like everything is very simple and he just marks EXTREMLY harsh. I personally think that a harsh grader like him is not a good thing for students it simply just lowers the self-esteem.
This teacher is impossible and I think the school should hire the new teacher . Very harsh for grading
Really tough teacher and school should retire him Bad bad bad bad bad bad bad
Do not use his class and it will reduce your gpa
Not recommended at any cost
Found it overwhelming to have 3 assignments, 3 tests, plus a proposal and a final paper. Couldn't it have been a bit more condensed? I found his marking to vary a lot - ex. same amount of effort on one paper would get you a 90+, but then 70 something on another. Zero useful feedback.
His motive is to put your grades down. Not a good teacher. Does not provide clear and enough instructions before an assignment. Keeps cutting down your grades, furthermore you fall sick, get ready for another grade cut.
Very inconsistent marking. Could also get a little rude in online classes
He will give you 0 in papers and other major submissions if you can not satisfy him. Your overall mark for any assignment will automatically drop to 60% even if you miss a period. If he wants you to fail, you will fail no matter what, and being an international student it hurts to fail a course that is an elective when you pay $2000 for a class.
Please do yourself a favor. Do not take this course :). Just don't.
Probably one of the worst professors I have come across in my life. very tough grader. take his class and watch him talk about himself trying to relate the class work to his personal experiences.
Undoughtably the worse professor I have ever had. Very unfair grader. Will not answer any questions you have if you miss a single day of class. Please do yourself a favor and avoid him at all costs.
Honestly, I really liked the CMNS lecture from him. Just do what he asks you to do, and he will grade you well. I scored pathetically bad in my first assignment, learned well through his feedback and scored A+ towards the end and A- overall. Make sure you are attending his lectures and try not to miss any of the classes.
This guy is a straight up dick. Will gloat in class about personal achievements and 'business' stories whilst trying to relate them to the subject material. Extremely tough marker and gets off to the sound of his own voice. Just avoid this f*ck1ng clown of a prof.
This professor did not teach me anything. Every assignment stressed me out because he did not make his grading fair or logical. Overall, it was a horrible experience. His in-class lectures often included inappropriate jokes and unprofessional behaviour like yelling at students in front of the entire class. If you need CMNS 1290, FIND ANOTHER PROF!
Jason can be strict but it's left for you to attend classes and take notes or else you fail. He responds to emails quickly.
No final exam but he would give out essays 2500 words max and just say you use the MLA structure but he wouldn't go into depth explaining more. I had a hard time getting the hang of it but i aced it. He's good at responding to students quickly and i also loved his sarcastic jokes,
Professor can be strict, but if you stay on top of the work and use resources like unstuckstudy, you can do well. Attendance is a must, but the feedback is valuable.
Worst professor I have ever experienced. Marking has no logic behind it and your grade will be changed if you question him about it. Every lecture consists of jokes about women and his own personal stories that are supposed to be “life changing advice”. Completely unprofessional and gives bad advice. Would never use his teachings in the real world
Haven't received a final grade yet, but right now I have a B. Prof is phenomenal if you put the work in. Attendance and “homework” (not for marks) are required. He's Understanding that everyone has outside responsibilities and grants extensions reasonably. Anyone who hates him just does not want to do work and thinks they can coast
He keeps your attention, he likes your attention. If you just do as he says and listen to his instructions, you'll get a good grade. He marks hard at first then at the end gives you free retries on all of your stuff if need be. Honestly guy deserves more credit. He's not bad if you just pay attention.
Very boring lectures. He is the absolute worst, always says his one usual boring sentence and talks in a very loud and annoying tone. Moreover doesn't grade fairly and is very reluctant to opinions.
