Hard. Unhelpful. You don't use lab books, you rewrite them, if not satisfactory, you are not allowed in lab. Goes WAy too fast. Takes pride in being difficult. When you need help you are told "that's why we have tutors". Smart guy, just extremely difficult.
Very difficult and extremely hard to understand. Made me feel stupid when I asked simple questions! Do not take him if you don't have to. You have to recopy the lab into your own notebook. If not done good enough, you can't complete the lab!
he makes you write lab reports with 5 procedures before lab, and on lab day, he is like, oh we are olny doing one of the procedures. waste of my time. the class started with around 24 kids, there are 5 left. need i say more. take dean if you can
CHM100 is a remedial class meant to update and a prereq for some other degrees. However if someone does not understand the subject they ask their professor for help. When I did this I felt like he thought I should know, and he was frustrated that I did not understand. His notes are the book word for word and his tests are extremely confusing.
Very hard class but you will learh more in his class then any other. I found him to be very helpful. We were able to call his cell phone any time of the day and I do mean any time of the day. The knowledge I gained in his class has put me way ahead of many other students in other classes (nursing).Do not take in the summer
If registered for another teacher and he shows up, RUN!!!. Will be the worst semester of your school career. Humiliates you, grades inconsistently, tests are not what he tells you to expect, refuses to lecture and then expects you to still know the material. Makes you feel like an idiot even with a 4.0. Flunks alot of students and brags about it.
Awful teacher!!!! Does not know how to teach a chemistry class and has no business being around students. He makes his class extremely difficult and seems like he takes joy out of watching students struggle. His attempt to teach is nothing short of pathetic.
Excellent teacher! Really tries hard to help everyone understand. He's always working hard to improve his teaching methods and keeps getting better at it. Easy to talk to and truely wants every student to do well. I can't understand the bad reviews, totally false.
Dr. Brinkley tries very hard to make sure that everyone understands this fairly difficult subject. He has a slight tendency to believe that his Chemistry knowledge is common knowledge, but he takes constructive criticism very well and you can tell that he would like for everyone to understand and enjoy his class. I would take him again.
Excellent teaching skills, very helpful, really wants the students to succeed.
Worst teacher i've ever had, class was full at beginning of sem. and i think 3 students remained in class, can't explain anything, is the least helpful teacher i've ever had, just terrible, do not take waste of money and time
Very hard teacher, can be very condescending. He does his best to try and clarify some of the more difficult ideas. There is some issues with grading, but overall has been very interesting.
Does not use powerpoint, hand writes all lecture notes via an overhead projector, can't read his handwriting. Says he is available 24/7 just call, then when you do he acts like you are bothering him, does not use snapgrades, does not explain concepts clearly, smart man but can't or won't talk on students level, should not be teaching Intro Courses
Chem 99 is a remedial class. He should not be teaching this level. Made some in class feel like idiots for asking questions. Constnatly compared 1 class to his other class and told us we were "seriously behind" his night class. Poor, poor instructor. don't take him!
The tests and quizzes are very difficult...not sure what will be on them and therefore not sure what to study. He tells you to read the whole book and goes very quickly through class! If you are not able to copy down all the notes, he tells you to write faster!!! Feel stupid when ask questions, he understands it so you should too!
Being a Two day a week Class the class is extremely fast (a chapter a day on lecture and a lab a day on lab days) If you ask a question he will do his best to explain it in different terms. not very many people will ask questions tho, also very helpful out of class hours as well. very much expects students to take initiative in learning as well
I liked chemistry before this class. There is a lot to work to do in not much time. His test are very hard and you are never sure what he is going to ask. When questions are asked he gets annoyed and during lab he is not helpful at all. When you ask for advice in a problem he will not tell you if you are doing things right or wrong, he doesn't help
Professor Brinkley has such a broad understanding of CHM it seems he could teach higher level courses with ease, and, therefore, sometimes moves too fast thru complicated concepts. With such an apt Professor be a student who takes initiative to learn, meaning, use flash cards and learn to visualize and have a limber mind like he has. Make him laugh
the worst teacher I've had in my career as a student. He teaches as though he expects you to know the material beforehand . His quizzes/tests are BS and writes the questions to purposely confuse you. Only reason I passed was I took chem in HS and only remotely understood what he was talking about. You'll learn more on YouTube then from this guy
This prof is not the best chem professor. You can pass his class if you work extremely hard. I took chem 110 during the summer so it was probably extra hard. If you study the concepts that he is teaching with repatition, you will be able to pass.
He was a horrible teacher. He had all his special ways of doing material that just confused the whole class. He was completely useless when it came to helping with lab work. The only way I passed chem 110 was reading the book and doing the mcgraw hill connect modules online.
I have taken Brinkley before, he has gotten much better then a few years ago. He explains things things better and is much more willing to create extra credit and in class assignments to help boost your grade. Like any science class you have to put in the effort to get a good grade. You must come to every class. No study guides.
Run as fast as you can from this teacher. I only did well, because I had an awesome CHM099 teacher the semester before & the beginning of the course is review. Brinkley is confusing & more worried about his electronics than anything. I learned more in 2 hours with a sub than all semester with him.
I've had three years of chemistry prior to this class, and that included AP. I have never struggled so hard. I got A's in my previous classes, but doubt I'm there in here. He doesn't teach well at all, and he doesn't stress types of problems that will be on the tests. The LearnSmart doesn't help. Just takes up time. I do not advise taking him.
Intelligent teacher, but difficult class. You will get A LOT of homework assignments (emphasis on a lot) and he expects you to spend a lot of time on Chemistry outside of class. He's a nice guy and funny sometimes. It's a hard class and a lot of people dropped.
Mr. Brinkley is a tough teacher. His class is Extremely difficult. lots of homework. Impossible if you have never taken a chamistry class before like me.
Very difficult class
You need a chemistry background to pass this class. Lots of homework and 99% of that homework is submitted online, and chapter quizzes are taken online but are timed. He is very intelligent, seems to be unapproachable, but he wants the students to learn and pass his class. about 10 people dropped by semester's end.
Genius. Sometimes too genius. Expects students to have the same love of chemistry as he does, and a lot of background knowledge to boot. Can be hard to approach, but he's a super friendly guy when you get to know him. Lots of assignments and very time consuming. Good Chemist. Good Guy. BAD teacher. He really tries, though.
Such a hard class. Doesn't keep grades posted so you never actually know how you are doing. Blames the online service for the lack of organization. He wants us to get it and he wants us to love chemistry but he just cant teach well. A bunch of people withdrew. Do not take this teacher no matter what you do!
Worst teacher I believe I have every had. He is so rude and sarcastic all of the time. I am not good at chemistry, but I belive if I had a better teacher I could atleast understand it. He makes it all look like gibberish. He also does not help you at all. Avoid this teacher!
Chemistry at RVC is tough in general but this professor really prepares you for future classes. He is intimidating don't let that stop you from asking questions. He really knows his stuff.
This is my second time taking this class because I failed the first time with a different professor. I thought it was because I was dumb but it was the way the other professor explained it. Mr. B explains it in a way thats easy to understand and will remember. Very good teacher.
This is a tough class and he is a tough instructor. He covers a ton of material VERY quickly and doesn't always give clear answers to questions. Working the problems at the end of each chapter is essential for passing quizzes and tests. Take advantage of extra credit when offered.
He's an awesome guy who teaches an incredibly difficult class. He understands this and is very accommodating. I regret to say that I didn't read much of the book and I barely passed so take it from me that you will be nose in the books for the length of the semester if you want anything higher than a low C. Important that you attend lecture.
He certainly makes you earn the grade. Be expected to read the material more than once, and studying is essential to pass. But I don't think I have met a teacher yet who cares more about the student learning experience more than him. He offers more than generous office/phone hours if you need help. He really truly cares about the students.
Do not take this professor. He doesn't tell you which problems you got wrong on exams, he can be rude to students who ask questions, and expects you to put in extremely unreasonable time in outside of class. By that I mean about 12 hours a week outside of class, probably more.
Pretty unorganized sometimes. I barely ever knew what my grade was and received it only two times the whole semester, even after consistently asking. Individual teaching method is nonexistent. Works directly from the textbook and expects you to put in hours outside of class pretty much teaching yourself. Wouldnt take this class again- pure torture.
Dr. Brinkley is an ok teacher. His lectures are not very clear, but clear enough to understand what he wants you to learn. His tests are impossible to do good on. He only gives out your grade 2 times in the semester. He is helpful though when you ask. You need to put in a lot of effort to do well in his class.
Makes no sense at all
Cool as a person but not as a teacher
Funny teacher but relays to much on textbook readings.
He doesn't actually teach you anything that will be on the test.
You can learn just as much if you don't even attend class
Relys too much on you printing your own things at home. Miss one lab and you will NOT pass the class. If you don't print something out you can not participate in the lab.
Does not make any sense in what he is teaching and often says "oh well you need this to learn" but then doesn't describe what you need
He is a good professor if you are really into chemistry. He expects you to do a lot of reading and look at his online videos which is useful, but the class is kind of hard. The sapling homeworks are kind of eternal to be honest. On tests, he doesnt give you feedback on the multiple choice so you have to go see him and do your work for it.
Brinkley is a negative person, who discourages the class. Tests are extremely difficult and not enough time to complete labs. If you do not read the textbook you will fail. Lectures are confusing and very fast paced. This class was hardest thing I have ever done, which is saying something since I am in higher science courses now. Set up to fail.
Brinkley really knows chemistry. Too well. Most of the concepts and ideas he teaches fly over the students' heads because he does not teach it in a way for students to understand. His lectures are awful. You can't read his handwriting and he goes through everything too fast with little to no example problems. Take a different instructor!
I felt like this teacher set students up to fail. He goes through information fast. Homework didn't match the readings and was posted a few days before it was due. He was unorganized. I never knew where I stood with my grade. Lab safety is important and the entire class would be docked points on labs if someone didn't follow procedure.
I took him for my CHM 120 class... hardest thing I've ever done. Every single day is a lecture and he goes through it very fast. It's hard to try to write everything down because it all is going to be on his tests. A great number of students failed at least three out of the four exams.
This guy is awful. He is extremely negative, condescending, disorganized, achingly arrogant, blisteringly foulmouthed, overly harsh, altogether uncaring, and enormously impatient. For instance, after a serious hospitalization, his only comment was, "There's a typo in your doctor's note." Also, the homework was spread across three websites.
In my opinion he needs a different teaching style. Chem120 is a pretty tough class and he doesn't really try to make it any easier on you. He is always willing to help outside of class which is helpful. Do not miss a lab because you will fail.
He treats his class like a hybrid class. If you don't know it, look it up on Google. Google will be your bestfriend as well as YouTube. DON'T ASK HIM! When he teaches it's just a skeleton of it, and doesn't explain his process clearly. His tests have nothing to do with most of his lecture and there will be surprise questions on the test. Good luck
The absolute worst professor i have ever had. I though i didn't understand the class until we had a sub for one day. Turns out hes just a horrible professor. Be ready to have NONE of your questions answered but rather them just repeated back to you over and over until you cry. The tutor has had to teach me this entire course. I would give a 0 not 1
This was my worst experience I have ever had in a class. I felt like he doesn't care about students. His teaching style is not effective and often times I looked to others for help. He is very arrogant and conceited. I had a very hard time understanding the material and the test questions are completely different than what is learned in class.
Worse teacher I have ever had. Teacher cancelled several classes, the material on the test had nothing to do with lectures. Impossible to do well in the class. Teacher is unapproachable.
Very disappointed in this class. I don't even dislike chemistry, but I don't think I learned a single thing. It's impossible to pass a test because the lectures really have nothing to do with them, and neither does the homework. I passed with a good grade only because everyone failed so badly he had to add huge curves. Take anyone else, seriously.
He was the worst teacher I have ever had. I have always been a good student, but he treated me horribly. He never showed up to meetings outside of class & he canceled class constantly. He would never teach what we missed when he canceled, he would just send us the slides. His tests are impossible to pass. He is demeaning and only answers Qs w Qs.
Brinkley is a very hard professor to understand when he is teaching. I feel like he's very knowledgeable in Chemistry, but expects the students to understand it as fast as he does, so it usually goes over everyone's heads. I started to not attend lecture days because I found it more beneficial to watch his online videos because I can take my time.
Brinkley was the worst professor I have ever taken.. Be prepared to teach yourself and spend countless hours at least each week doing assignments, teaching yourself, and studying. He just reads through power points, doesn't really teach well or break things down. His tests are impossible to pass and our class average on tests and quizzes were F's.
Be prepared to work hard for a good grade. The tests are much harder than the homework or quizzes. Labs are easy if you prepare beforehand. He really knows his Chemistry and is helpful when you have a direct question. His policies are clear on the syllabus, dont expect deviations or exceptions. He is very strict on his rules and safety.
I've only taken the first exam so far and I can already tell its going to be nearly impossible to get a B in this course. We had to do a calculation that involved knowing how many Liters are in a cubic foot. There was no reference sheet, he wanted it to just be common knowledge.
Dr. Brinkley was the worst chemistry professor Ive ever had. I do believe he is a very smart chemist, but his inability to convey any information to the class is what makes him such a poor professor. Id recommend using the OpenStax textbook along with the ALEKS problems if you want to do well. Dont rely on him to answer any questions.
Online class for chm-120 was supposed to be asynchronous (completely online). registered and started class, it was not- being that you have to do at home labs and the homework assignments are locked out till the day before the assignment is due. I emailed Dr. Brinkley and he did give clear guidance. ALOT of assignments (14 to be specific) in 1 week
Its a challenging class and it is important to stay on top of thing otherwise youll fall behind quickly, but overall I enjoyed the class.
Dr. Brinkley didn't put a lot of work into his asynchronous class. Your grade is dependent upon an external learning source (each assignment taking a few days to complete). The average grade for the class on both assignments and exams were often very low. No lectures and would cancel office hours frequently. Don't take course if you procrastinate.
If you can take this class in person with a different teacher do it. Professor Brinkley barely answered any questions I asked. Tests are very hard and you get no help with any notes or from the teacher.
Prof. Brinkley is honestly a misunderstood teacher. He can be really funny and knows a lot about his subject. His notes are hard to read and tests are pretty hard but he has a lot of assignments that are easy and get you "grade-padding" points. He also drops a lot of assignments so if you study and do the work your overall grade should be passing!
All I have to say is RUN. Worst professor I have ever had. Expects too much out of us like we are some genius. Aleks is the worst thing. He doesn't even teach anything. Tests and super hard, so please pick another professor.
I was once in your position reading these reviews to take him as a teacher or not. ill say this. He's not a bad professor. There was a ton of homework on ALEKS and the exams were proctored. If you put work into this class you'll be fine. If you are a smart student who can do things on their own then you'll be fine. he's the worse at responding tho.
Before starting the summer semester I was hesitant to take this class because of the reviews, but it honestly wasn't that bad. There is a lot of homework and the labs can be time consuming, but that's what's expected when taking a college level chemistry class. If you're good at time management and willing to put in the work then you'll be fine.
Professor Brinkley is a cool guy; however, for the majority of students, his teaching style does not fit. His expectations in student knowledge is overaly high, he assigns a lot of homework on top of notable reading and video assignments. His hybrid lectures are not in sinc with the text book. Based on the way this class was taught, I didnt learn.
Class average for the final was a 41%. Don't take the class with this professor unless you absolutely have to. Be prepared to study A LOT for each exam. The lectures cover very different material from the exams.
For an intro to chem class, it was extremely difficult. Treated a beginner course as if we already knew the material. Lectures did not relate to the test.
I'm always to keep my grades in the A's with little issue. I have never, EVER had a professor worse than Jason Brinkley. His lecture videos are sometimes broken & do not fully cover the material required for the ALEKS homework, which were easily 50+ questions a week. Does not respond to emails. Labs weren't enjoyable at all. Locks you out if late.
Brinkley is not a professor for anyone who even struggles slightly with Chemistry. When going through the lecture, he goes over important topics too quickly to take any proper notes and by the time you catch up with the example, he's already on the next part of the lecture.
I took this course over the summer, and it was very grueling. I struggled with chemistry as a whole, and I did not feel supported. When I asked questions, he would get annoyed with me, which seemed very unprofessional. I ended up getting a tutor because his lectures were too surface level, he would not assist students, and I was failing every exam.
I took CHM120 and CHM130 with him and it is was awful experience. He acts like he is better than everyone and you can hear it in his voice that he just does not care at all about you. When he "grades" things, he just slaps a grade on and gives no explanation whatsoever. Save yourself the trouble and don't take any of his classes.
If you are trying to take this class with a full schedule, DO NOT. The class is ALEKS heavy. Don't bother watching his out of date lecture vids, you'll have no time. If you want to survive this class be prepared to teach yourself on ALEKS for hours a day. Pre-lab lecture is minimal so teach yourself that too. Ask him questions at your own risk.
Brinkley was easily the worst professor I have ever had. He hand writes notes and his handwriting is so awful that I couldn't even tell what he was writing. By the time I was able to figure it out, he'd have moved on to the next thing. Almost everyone would've failed if he didn't curve the grade. Gets annoyed when you ask questions.
Worst professor I've ever had. Got annoyed if you asked questions. Hand writes notes with awful handwriting. Once scribbled over one of my labs because I wrote in pencil instead of pen. So much Aleks homework. Almost everyone would have failed if he hadn't curved the grade.
Take absolutely anyone else if you can. ALEKS is the entire course which takes hours so avoid procrastinating as much as possible. Feedback is half a sentence and provides no real substance to better yourself. The syllabus is outdated, lectures are outdated, and so is his teaching style. He really needs to be reevaluated as a professor.
Check if you use AI in homework, the exams are too heavy, in my opinion during classes I took labs and the homework was too difficult and the exams were about homework, which we never saw in class, its handwriting can never be read. although an advantage is that it leaves a lot of homework that helps you raise your grade.
Genuinely the worst class I have ever taken. Way too much ALEKS homework for VERY little points. His lectures aren't needed and you have to teach yourself on ALEKS. It is the only thing that matters because the tests are on it and is completely based on the homework. He's snarky and questions are scary to ask. Pick a different professor if you can!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. He is rude when you ask questions. hours and hours of homework on ALEKS. Test record you and each test is a 10$ fee. Hard class bad teacher.
