Yeah, great teacher, great humor, just don't play hackysack
No Comments
great guy, messy drawing style, not as strict as Rivers, fun to listen to, great critiques, lets you have some artistic freedom
As far as teaching style goes, he is more of an academic. You'll learn more about human anatomy than how to draw. Not an especially fulfilling class, but Burrell IS very interesting. If you need work on your drawing skills, take Rivers class instead.
Good teacher. helpful. there was no really strict schedule for his of photo. this is a pretty straight forward course. and you can blaber on about any photo stuff in the many discussions. Good Art his course
With an online course, it's hard to really determine a prof's personality, but he seems really nice. He's always been quick with email responses and the course is organized fairly well.
Seems nice, but if you are not an art major, don't take. It's more about critiquing photos than learning the history.
Jason's a very compassionate person and professor. He inspired me to draw better than I thought was possible. History of Photo was different than I expected. As said before, more critiquing than actual history. He has a great (and odd) sense of humor, so watch out for that!
His Art as Interface class is just great! He's very intelligent and fun. Even more awesome as a contrast to Fenmore, who we've all heard the horror stories about.
Not too difficult of a class, and very little course work (mostly consists of watching movies).
This class is funny, entertaining and a LOT more interesting than I had even hoped! I'd definately recommend the class for those interested in cinema! It's a great class, Burrel is really awesome and SO much more helpful than most of the other art profs I've encountered!
simply awesome
hes a pretty easy teacher, and a really nice guy in general- he really seems to connect with his students and genuinely wants them to learn.
So far, the online quizzes are about the most obscure details in the movies and the majority of the class if failing (as far as I can tell from the discussion board). Hopefully he'll curve it at the end, but so far everyone I've talked to is so frustrated w/ this class.
ya, the quizzes for this class are rediculous. he devised this really messed up grading system that just bugs me, not to mention destroys my quiz average.. questions are very obscure, and just about all of them have multiple answer options. forget one, lose it all! grrr, burns my rear...
Burrell is VERY helpful, ask questions! As for doing well: take copious notes, jot down anything from film discussions, and attend all extra help sessions available. Though the quiz system can be strange, Burrell will award you a fair grade.
He's a very nice guy, but he doesn't seem fit to teach this class. He turned it into a film class, and I hear they actually had notes and a book in previous classes. We were his guinea-pig class, and he was re-vamping the quiz system as we went along. I emailed him several times and was never responded to. I hope it goes better next semester...
Basically a film class with ambiguous quizzes that can screw your grade easily (I learned nothing). Eventually he learned half the class was lost and made the last quizzes easier and curved our grades, but still not an enjoyable experience. Sucks that it's a pre-req, hope the next classes are better..
Quizzes very unclear and he gave us 8 of them (1/2 our grade) to do during finals week. He procrastinates on posting the quizzes online so we have to do it all at once. If you're not an art major you will never want to take another art class after this.
He worked really hard to help us out. I experienced movies I never would have and as an artist I was inspired by lots of them. His comments on the movies are noteworthy if you are lost. At first I didn't think I'd like the course but I ended up enjoying it alot!
This class was the most rediculous, ludicrous, obscure, dumb, useless class I've ever been involved in. Totally screwed my grade up. As an art major, I still failed the course and after numerous conversations, he still failed to come out in the end on top. He doesn't care about the class average being an F. HORRIBLE! AVOID AT ALL COST!
Though the class is bound to change further still, my best advice would be to 1) cater to his style (in-class attentiveness is key!) and 2) don't hesistate to ask him (purposeful) questions. The class average was ~83, but if it hadn't been, he would've curved it to an 80 average. I received an A in the course.
Terrible class. I kid you not. Only take it if you have to. Even then, you might want to re-think your motives. Rediculous grading system. He doesn't seem to understand that it's impossible to grade on interpretation. Of course, he does it anyway. Don't be suprised if you're an A student and you fail. Like me. /cough.
Don't take the class unless you have to. Very ambiguous on what he wants. Quizzes are way after you're supposed to see the material. I recommend just watching the movies in the library after the questions come out. Otherwise, you're sure to fail. He's a very nice guy though, just not the best instructor at all.
I was sweating through this entire class, up until the final two weeks when he came out with about 12 quizes which were much easier than the previous ones and a curve to give me an A in the class! wtf? i still dont know how that happened but im not complaining.
doesnt really seem to know everything he's teaching himself...quizzes can be hard if you dont have the movie handy
He is really nice... but he is a little out there with his teaching style. I am a very artsy and creative person, but he still confused me. His online quizzes basically suck at life and are nonsense. TIP: go to class or you are pretty much screwed.
This guy should never teach online courses again. He's very disorganized and doesn't post any work. We don't even know what he's going to grade on and it's finals week. All we really have is 2 small assignments and a huge research paper due this week. One of the worst teachers ever.
Nice guy, very cool to talk to. His Art as Interface course is definately challenging. If you work hard you can pull off an alright grade.
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. This teacher is very disorganized and very unhelpful. Do not take this class if you don't have to. If you have no choice then my advice is make friends and take the tests together. Also remember that you can print out the tests and watch the movies at the same time. Get Netflix asap!
easily the worst professor ive ever had.the lesson work was easy the creative projects were easy but unclear.he didnt respond to emails and never gave us grades or feedback of any kind on any assignments all semester. ended up with a B, no idea why. emailed him about my final grade, he never responded. he ruined what should have been a cool class.
A very non-involved professor... difficult to take an online class without any feedback. We had one major PPT presentation, a paper and a final where we weren't given a review so no one knew what is was on except "broad topics" in our text. Received no feedback at all on anything... I was an involved student and got a B+ which I'm pissed about.
if you can avoid this class, do so. the quizzes are terrible. the class is long and dull. the group project sucks and i ended up having to do it myself. i hate this class. the teacher was an ok person but he can't organize for****.
he is a horrible teacher, everyone i talk to complains about him. horrible organization and you never find out what grades you got. he does not follow the syllabus at all. i was very involved and even did extra assignments that were not needed for fun and yet i got a b-? i never heard any grades back, all we had was a power point presentation that
Nice/weird guy, extremely disorganized. I respect him as an individual, but at times I wanted to kill him. The quizzes are on nit-picky details that have little relevance to the topic being taught, it's basically just to make sure you actually watch the films outside of class. Impossible to reach him outside class, but will talk to you after class.
yes, he is not very organized at times, but he is a nice guy and wants you to learn. some quizzes are tricky but there are so many it doesn't matter. print the quizzes before you watch the movies and you will get an A. some of the movies were dumb, but a lot of them were great. if you miss class it's not a big deal just watch the movie out of cass.

What a waste of money! Hes disorganized and so vague about what he wants on the group project. Some of the movies were interesting but most were just really good at putting me to sleep. The quizzes were also on the most random (and insignificant) parts of the movies.
He is seriously one of the worst teachers i have ever encountered in my time being a student. His classes, lectures, ideas, thoughts, and overall attitude is pointless. Granted this is all opinionated, but there was not one person while taking art as interface that enjoyed being in that class. He is a waste of time
TERRIBLE TEACHER! HE DIDN'T EVEN TURN OUR GRADES IN ON TIME. MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS RECEIVED AN N (None) FOR OUR GRADE! DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN HELP IT!
Professor is very unorganized. The actual class is easy, the quizzes aren't hard, I got an A- and didn't take notes during any of the movies. Just be patient. Oh, and he DID eventually input grades, albiet 5 days before the start of the next semester
Jason is by far the worst professor I have had at UCF my entire 4 years here. The student designed module project was very vague, even though my team were the "winners". We struggled with that. He turned our grades in late so I missed registering for another class b.c this 1 was a pre-req. It baffles me to know why UCF is still letting him teach.
Art as Interface is the biggest joke of a class ever. The quizzes will kill you unless you watch the films they cover 900x over and memorize everything single thing in them, even down to the extras walking around in the background. Do NOT take this class. I feel bad for Art Majors who have to. It is designed to weed people out and that it will do.
We were required to watch alot of very boring and hard to find movies. The questions were vague and seemed based on opinion instead of hard yes or no questions. I would not take this unless you had to, but the instructor is very nice and helpful.
Online Adobe illustrator course. Given 2 assignments every week, it is now almost the end of finals and no one has received any grades at all. Takes 1-3 weeks to respond to e-mails.
This guy will never answer you e-mails. The dude seems to have "more important" things to do. He doesn't show much care for student success.
The content is hard to convey to such a large audience. The best way to talk to Jason is before or after class. He's very good at explaining things, everything is broken down very well, although many times the quiz questions are not art related.
I took this course online. I emailed him several times to ask about our grades, which were never posted. I never received any communication back. Finals rolled around, and we didn't hear anything about it until the middle of finals week. Terrible. No communication w/ students. Doesn't post grades for anything. Fairly easy class.
Class pretty much consists of watching an obscure artsy movie in class, and one out of class. You are then given the worst freaking quiz you could ever imagine... to the point where you might as well not have watched the movie. He almost goes out of his way to trick you into getting the questions wrong.
This class is terrible. We watch two movies a week (1 in class, 1 out of class- in the library. he puts 3 copies aside for 400 students to watch so you always have to wait to watch it. 2 movies are 4 hours long)the quizzes are impossible and we never go over any of them so it is very hard to improve. i love art/ hate this class
His class is not that hard, but it is extremely frusterating. You watch two movies a week. One in class, and one at home. Then you take online quizzes that are anything but straightforward. He is impossible to contact and takes forever to grade the only project that isn't graded by computer. If it ever becomes an option take someone else's class.
Impossible to reach by email but extremely helpful after class. The movies can be interesting, if hard to get your hands on. Quizzes generally impossible to ace. Example of a question of his: Did Maya Lin design the Vietnam War Memorial? Everyone selects yes. His answer: No; she created the Vietnam VETERANS memorial. Seriously? Easy pass, tough A.
Very difficult to sit through an entire class without desperately wanting to leave. The movie choices were pretty boring and his quizzes were even worse. Large group project pretty impossible to get together. It's hard to know what he wants and he never hints at what that is.
An insipid fool. DO NOT TAKE unless you have to. He is unclear on everything, creates ridiculous quiz questions 'what soup did andre eat? was it a symbol of his simplicity?' An arrogant lunatic. Our final was him talking about how tsunami victims should have made bottle spheres and run on water. He's insane.
I read these comments and think people are crazy. He is such a funny and entertaining professor. His quizzes do require you to think, but get over it - it's college. Some movies are hard to get through, admittedly, but it is possible to enjoy this class. I would take him - you'll be happy you did.
Not nearly as bad as everyone says. Hes nice and humorous. Movies can be very boring though but just get netflix so you dont have to watch it in the library. And he does suck at getting up grades...But otherwise absolutley nothing to dread!
Very nice guy. He is a great professor but the class is completely pointless and a waste of life watching movies. I would suggest if you have to take this... watch the movie WHILE you take your quiz... it'll make your life so much easier.
The course requires a large out of class commitment, so if you have to take it PLAN AHEAD. Still, the professor is friendly and more than willing to answer questions if you catch him after class
Burrell is a funny guy, but his class is EXTREMELY boring. he makes you watch boring videos all the time and its hard to watch them because there are usually only like 3 copies.
I read all of these bashings on Burrel, and thought I needed to come to his defense. His art as interface course 2820 was an easy introductory course on what it means to be an artist. It is a simple format, watch a movie, take a quiz. These movies made me think about art on different levels. If you don't do well, ask yourself WHY?EASY CLASS!
print out the quiz and answer the questions as you watch the movie. he drops the lowest grade. really easy to talk to after class (he will stay as long as you need him to) one group project but not too difficult. netflix helps but you don't need to spend any money on this class. He's a really nice and funny guy. too many lazy haters on here...
Very amusing and interesting professor! I'm never bored in his class. He's a good teacher and his class is pretty easy as long as you do the asignments.
A total waste of time and money. Many students complain that he doesnt respond to emails, doesnt give feedback EVER and is not there to teach. It seems that he teaches too many classes so his online classes are last priority. He was "too busy" to post the final so we had a surprise final the Monday after school was over. PREPARE TO BE SELF-TAUGHT!
Really easy class if you show up he gives you most of the quiz answers. You have to watch movies in the library and the questions are pretty straightforward most of the time. Sometimes you'll get a question on the quizzes that makes no sense but its bearable.
most of the movies are ridiculously weird/boring. quizzes can be very tricky but google helps. i slacked off in the beginning, so i definitely had to work hard in the end just to get a B. class is really boring, but he gives quiz answers during class. Sucks that this is required for art majors. wasn't at all what i expected. i did not enjoy it!
He's an interesting guy &very passionate about wat he's teaching, which's a quality I liked. The movies r extremely bizarre &don't expect to understand 1/2 of wat's going on, but they r interesting in a way- they really open your eyes &make you think (but you have to be open to it!!)Quizzes are BS tho! Some questions r ok, many r subjective & WTF!!
Great teacher. If you take this class, you probably are an art major, and if you're an art major, you'll probably love all the movies we watch. Class isn't really mandatory but if you go, you'll learn interesting info. no final. all quizzes online. fun class.
Very interested in what he's teaching and brings you into it. Great sense of humor. If you doodle in his class, he will genty call you out, but as long as you're awake, he doesn't seem to mind. Quizzes are challenging. REMEMBER TO SAVE EACH QUESTION INDIVIDUALLY... otherwise you'll get zeros for quiz grades and you can't fix them.
Do NOT take this class. I was very passionate about art until I started taking this class. Im struggling to get a C in this class and I pay attention to all the in class movies and I watch all of the out of class movies.
Nice guy and helpful when you ask questions but the class was just so ridiculously stupid. All we did was watch terrible movies and take WebCT tests on them. I learned absolutely nothing from this class although it was easy in the end. I thought I was failing the whole time because I failed almost every WebCT quiz and in the end got an A-
He doesn't upload your grades or give much feedback to your work. Wants you to call his cellphone to answer your questions. When I emailed him, I got a reply, but not immediately, this did not bother me. What bothers me is that I got a B and I have no idea why because I never saw what grades I got on my work. And this is how many others feel as wel
Tons of online WebCT classes on ridiculous films- that's the entirety of this class. Some of it was fun. Most of it was exhausting and/or too difficult. I liked Burrell as a person though. A little pretentious, but what do you expect? Attendance wasn't really mandatory and there's no real final, but the movie quizzes were killer.
An unfortunate "core" class for art majors. The lectures are basic art 101 material and the movies are pretty obscure just as the quizzes on them are. Professor's up to date with pop culture... in an annoying try-hard way. As long as you pay attention to the movies and take notes on every detail, you'll do fine on the online quizzes.
Burrell is super interesting and makes himself easily available even though he commutes from the Daytona campus. Attendance not mandatory but will help grades. Movies are usu good (if you like art analysis), mc web quizzes challenging b/c subjective. class is usu redundant for art majors, in case part of your basic art education was neglected elsew
You watch a lot of movies in this class, and that's basically what the class is about. As long as you watch the movies with some attention, your quiz grades shouldn't become bad. The professor is knowledgeable about the subject and he is also really helpful. Recommended.
This class is so ridiculous. Maybe I did learn some snippets of information but so not worth it. Only took it 'cause it was a requirement. Be absolutely vigilant when you're watching the movies because those quizzes are multiple-multiple choice. Ultimately I earned an A, but just barely and with a lot of hard work.
Took this class online. I'm not impressed. Definitely take the quizzes while you're watching the movies. While I did learn a little, watching 20 movies can be tedious. If you have to take this course, I recommend a summer session so it goes by quicker.
Boring class, easy A. Terrible videos.
The lecture videos get a bit tedious, but a lot of the movies we watched for the class were interesting. This was an online class, so communication was a bit slow, but I didn't really have any questions so I wasn't bothered by that. An easy A, but do the quizzes while you watch the movies or at least look at the questions before you watch.
I've been in this mans class for 15 minuets and I can already tell how passionate he is for his students to do well. Which is something you don't find in teachers often anymore. He is really descriptive :)
Awesome professor, very passionate and knows his stuff. He makes it fun and interesting. Just keep up with the work, study and you'll do fine. He tends to take forever replying to emails though.
This is the worst class I have taken in college so far. A lot of rambling of nonsense from the professor, mostly quiz grades that are difficult to answer and questions are somewhat open ended. No test, just quizzes, films every class and some light film paper writing. Take online.
Professor B's class is not the easiest class you will ever take(based on quizzes), but it is one of the most interesting classes you will ever take. Never have I had a professor that spoke with such passion, knowledge and wisdom. Prof. B also provides extra credit opportunities that could actually benefit your future. I loved this class! :)
He is a decent guy he goes off on a lot of tangets and always makes an analogy to any movie to get the point through, which is annoying. He will hint the answer to some of the quiz questions during the movie or after. There is no textbook just movies you have to watch.
This class was a waste of time, it goes over the basic art elements that you may have learned from art 2D and 3D. You have to find all your own videos, and the grading system is ridiculous! Some of the answers have only one correct answer or more, but any wrong answer you select makes you LOSE points. DO NOT TAKE!
he is talented, passionate and generally good guy. hoever hes no nonsense, only wants to work on his schedule and seems to hate "dumb" questions/accommodating anyone. plays some favoritism. not to my liking
He has to be on tenure. You learn nothing in his class. He is a film nerd, but pretty boring as a teacher. He just sips his coffee, flips through powerpoint slides, then tells you to watch some irrelevant films at home and take quizzes on them. If the point of the class was to get you competent of artartists, he could have done a much better job.
Simple class. watch 2 videos a week, take quiz. he hints at answers in his lectures and will help during office hours. his tests are hard though. the questions aren't cut and dry and may require multiple answers but definitely passable. writing assignments really boost grades so do them on time and well. doesn't demand much and is very friendly.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable. For some reason though I feel like he is open to student-professor relationships based on his comments on Artemisia.
Professor Burrell was often a joy to listen to as he was a very inspiring speaker. You could tell he loved what he was talking about. He doesn't seem to understand webcourses enough to code tests and assignments correctly, so you have to always be on top of things. Quizzes are extremely difficult even after watching the movie with notes.
The professor shows true passion for the arts and its various representations through the artists and films studied in the course. However, the quizzes will always bring frustration and should be reviewed. The answers are ambiguous and purposefully attempt to trick. Overall, the most annoying class I've had to take, solely because of the quizzes.
I had professor Burrell for Drawing one over the summer, and couldn't have asked for a better professor. He cares about his students success and will always give more information or demonstrate concepts until you get a solid understanding of them. He pushes you a lot but is not mean about it.
I hate drawing. But enjoyed this professors class, he helped put me at ease and had me convinced by the end I can draw! I definitely recommend for those who feel overwhelmed by drawing 2 and had bad experiences with other drawing professors. He is very passionate about his class.
Jason is hands down one of the best Professors in art I have ever taken. He has helpful feedback and actually helps you improve. It wasn't an option for the class course but I actually had him for ART3321 not drawing 2.
I took his drawing intensive course during Summer A. One thing that stood out to me about him was how enthusiastic he was (and still is!) about teaching students how to draw. He is very kind, helpful, and a bit quirky. He loves to talk about his favorite movies during class lectures to make a point about art (especially the Lord of the Rings).
Professor Burrell's class was nothing short of amazing. I had taken a Summer A drawing 2 class which was extremely intense, but his teaching style, his involvement with the students and his critiques truly made it fun! I would 100% take a class with him again!
Professor Burrell's class was a fantastic experience. His hands-on approach, insightful critiques, and engaging teaching style made the intense coursework enjoyable. Unstuck AI proved a helpful study tool alongside the free textbook.
