Does not require to buy a text book. He gives you the material and he foes over everything. I took him for 1301 and I'm currently taking him this summer for 1302! You can get an A if you turn in all the work and put effort on the essays he gives out. He is very chill and will work with you as long as you communicate with him.
He is a cool professor. You will learn stuff that you would never thought you need to know in a English class with out even knowing it.
Professor Carney is the best teacher Ive ever had! He gives a ton of material to reference and explains everything. He is very caring about his students. I took him for 1301, 1302, and 2341. You can get an A if you put in the effort and turn in all the work on time. Carney is very laid back and wants each student to succeed. Highly recommend.
I took 1301 with Professor Carney, and then continued on to his 1302 and Forms of Literature classes. Professor Carney is a fantastic professor. He absolutely cares, and I have learned so much from taking his classes. His grading is tough, but the feedback is valuable and definitely improves your writing skills. Class is informative and enjoyable.
You should definitely take him. Jason Carney explains things extremely well and doesnt give many tests. Youll learn something and enjoy the class. Very laid back and caring professor.
Great Professor. I enjoyed his class thoroughly. He's a super Professor, he introduced the class to some phenomenal stories and authors. Would definitely take another class of his.
Don't be fooled by the ratings, most of them were created on the same day. The class doesn't have much hw, but don't take this class if you want an easy A. Dr. Carney gives good feedback and is overall a chill person. However, you have to put in a lot of effort for an A. Takes off a lot of points over simple mistakes.
Professor Carney is one of the most amazing professor I ever had. He is really kind and caring. If you follow the drections he gives you, the class will be very easy. He lets you submit late work and also is very considerate.
Professor Carney offers some great content to analyze however, he is a very tough grader. He does NOT grade easy and there were times when I even felt intimidated to reach out to him due to his strict nature. Don't expect an A from him unless you are VERY VERY confident in your writing abilities.
I was never good at writing until I took his class. Jason makes writing both easy and fun! We had an essay to work on at home, but we worked on the outline in class which essentially was most of the essay. I only got a C in the course because I skipped some assignments (outside life) My lowest assignment grade was a 75 and my next lowest was a 90.
TAKE THIS MANS CLASS ASAP! He will help you become a great writer and he REALLY cares! He gives great feedback which I always appreciate and it helps you remember for the next assignment. He has taught me so many awesome tricks Ill take with me to any college class that requires writing! PROF CARNEY IS THE BEST! plus he listens great music.
He is a super fun guy he is not super harsh about attendance but going to class is very beneficial and participating in class discussions and asking questions is very helpful when writing essays. He will communicate to you what he wants from you and give you tips and class. Don't hesitate to ask him questions he is also available outside of class.
My favorite teacher I have ever had, develops a relationship with every student, and made my writing drastically better over two semesters. Take his class asap. Please call him the "Jet" to carry on tradition.
Even though there were some difficult essays during the semester, Professor Carney, aka the Jet, aka Father Time, aka Teacher Bagger, helped with any questions you had for him and he wants to see you succeed and do well in his class. He a certified hood classic, he develops a relationship with every student he has, and I recommend his class heavily
Hard class but such a caring professor! Fav teacher I've ever had
He is hilarious and a one-of-a-kind professor. MAKE SURE YOU CALL HIM THE JET. Certified "jit", essays can be a pain but they always get done. This class teaches you how to actually write. Thanks jet
Be prepared to laugh, cry, and think
I miss this man more than anything. He is so personable and truly knows how to connect with his students. His assignments are difficult but you'll learn how to write. I still use a lot of what he taught me today. He sets the expectations clear at the beginning but don't let that fool you as he is always there to help and is incredibly understanding
Very inspirational. Always there and answers questions. Explains exactly what is required. Feedback so helpful. So grateful to have had the opportunity to take one of His classes.
Best teacher ever
He's a professor who you can tell genuinely cares about his students. This is not just a job he's doing for money. He loves it and it shows. I would take another a class of his, and I did (ENGL 1302). He made my first two semesters. I will never forget.
He helps you learn, and you can tell that he genuinely wants to. I took ENGL 1301 and 1302 with him (1302 was during the pandemic btw, haha). He is so personable, he is sweet, and he knows how to teach. I would take another class under him for sure. I strongly recommend him as a professor.
A lot of people seem to like him, which is why I took his class. I personally was not a fan, his feedback was rude and laughed at my writing.
Honestly I took this professor after reading the comments and rate online but he was one of the horrible professor I ever had. He was very disrespectful toward the student and even made fun of them. His teaching is very difficult to understand. He is very specific about his assignment and often rude with his feedback.
I took a three week class. It was well organized, each section built upon the last. He was very accessible via email and zoom meetings. He included lecture videos, rubrics and clear directions. I loved his feedback. It was honest and to the point, but when I took his suggestions, my writing improved. I wish I had him for a longer course.
He seems to care; he gives extra time to submit missing assignments. He will meet you on Zoom if you need help. He would make you laugh in the class. He needs to change his approach to feedback on bad writing and respond calmly to questions he doesn't like. It would be good if he changed some of the reading materials.
This professor grades hard. You miss anything and he will tell you. Rudely. It could be because I am online and I cannot read his emotions but I can say I will not take him again cause the way he approaches feedback is disrespectful and I am not the only student who agrees. Good luck if you take this man. He is no good when it comes to help.
I took his online class and found his feedback to be rather direct and useful. For a College Level class, the workload is very manageable. Especially if you take time to look at the learning material. When I used his feedback, my writing improved. Most points in the class are easy to obtain if you meet the minimum requirements.
For English 2332. Preface: if you don't understand sarcasm this is not the professor for you, because he will make jabs at you. Otherwise, I loved his class, he is truly an inspirational man and cares about his students. His class is very driven by analytical thinking but if you participate you will be fine. He is tough but fair. I stan Jason!
This professor has a good sense of humor. If you take sarcasm too literal/personal then this class may not work for you since he makes a lot of jabs. Outside of that, he's very open and honest (if you're lazy then you'll feel he's rude in his feedback). No textbook needed, assignments are manageable. Just come to class and have fun with his jokes.
Very clear on guidelines, what to do and what not to do. If you just put in the small effort to attend his lectures and write papers the way he wants them its an easy 100. You don't have to be good at grammar and vocab, just follow the proper mla format and stick to the topic Very clear feedback that helps boost grades. Entertaining lectures
This was my first semester of college online so I never got to know the professor personally but he does video lectures and they felt personable. The videos are quick and to the point so if writing is not your strong suit it can be a bit harder. Feed back on essays are to the point and helpful.
if you want to learn English or if your major is English then you will like him but if you are not, then he is very strict. His teaching style is good but in my opinion he is not very communicative.
I failed the class which is my fault but there is 1 thing I would change. Change the way you give feedback to students if they don't do well on an assignment or essay. Don't just say "doesn't meet minimum requirement", take time to tell the student what they did wrong and what they could improve on. Don't take this class again, take someone else.
I took Professor Carney for a 3 week ENGL 1301 course, the course is very fast paced as there is 16 weeks of material pushed into 3 weeks. He is a tough grader, but if you follow the prompts or rubric directly it will pay off. He does give clear feedback on why you missed out on points, and always responds to any questions you may have.
I completed one of my essays early and he gave me a 0. He didn't grade it or provide any feedback, he just put a 0 in which knocked my grade from an A to a F which completely discouraged me from doing anymore of his assignments. Probably going to drop the class now.
I will not lie at one point I didn't like the professor because of the zero he gave me two of my assignments. But I did grew to understand his grading style and etc. He wants you to push you to have the best writing and make sure you follow the instructions. He could improve on how he gives instructions in the paper and videos.
His lecture videos explained the material well and often answered any questions I had about the assignment. I was disturbed by some of the reading assignments as the content was explicit and dark. The excerpts may not have been chosen for their content, but other sources could provide similar writing techniques and educational content.
Planning is key
Mr. Jason is great! I very much enjoyed his class & plan to take his 1302 class in the fall. He provides a lot of extra credit & he also makes his lectures relatable & encourages participation from his students. If you do not plan to read the materials given, give assignments full effort, or are expecting an "easy A" do not waste your time or his.
I will never forget English 1301 with professor carney. He will hate on you if you drink Redbull but its so worth it. Ive never had a better teaching experience in my life. Thanks. for being the best at collin!! BTW he's obsessed the surf n turf from Valerie's Taco Shop, 1130 N Central Expy, Plano, TX 75074.
He's very open and a kind soul.
Mr. Carney was one of the best teachers i have ever had, not much to complain about. He kinda sounds like Matthew McConaughey and he's super funny, but you just gotta make sure you turn in everything on time!!!
His online class is a thorough course, but easy to navigate. I took him in the summer and finished with an a. The only way to do bad and his class is to Not work or to continually use AI to produce your documents. His feedback was incredibly helpful. He answered emails in a timely manner. I appreciated all of lecture videos and learning material.
This professor changed the way I view literature and my abilities in English. The class covers work by women and POC authors, which was refreshing and welcome. I would take his class again. My biggest tip is to put in the effort, he sees it and appreciates your hard work and will help you if you're still struggling. LOVE Prof. Carney!!
So much material for this class. Participation was basically mandatory otherwise you would be looked at by others. Not a good classroom environment for any in person learning. He is passionate about the subject which is good however the grading was very harsh with not much feedback to help improve for the future upon.
Professor Carney was amazing! He offered a lot of extra credit, and he also gave a good explanation on what exactly was needed for each assignment! Take him!
He is a fantastic professor that really made the class fun to participate in and come to. I really enjoyed how easy the assignments were to finish and how he explained the lectures and homework. He often jokes with and really cares about his students. I really recommend!!
Jason is respected as a poet and cares about helping his students learn. Grading criteria is clear, but if there's any confusion he responds to emails quickly. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss an assignment, there is plenty of extra credit to make up for it. Turn in the work, hit the criteria, and you'll be fine. La Salsa Verde 3300 K Ave
Jason is amazing. He always makes it known that his classroom is a safe space; he also enjoys teaching which makes the classroom experience that much better. I'm taking his 1302 class next semester because I know he'll teach fairly and stay entertaining. Brisket tacos on corn, gouda, pico de gallo, barbeque ranch at Charlie's in Rockwall.
I read the one Review before mine. It reminded me of the group chat for my course. The students who didn't like this professor with the ones who were constantly using AI to complete their online assignments and getting caught. They were students who wanted an easy A, I loved his feedback. I learned a lot. If you do the writing, it's an easy A.
I would have achieved a higher grade If I put in more effort and allocated my time more intelligently. He provides direct feedback to help you understand why you have that score and how you can improve in the future. Put in the effort, but don't stress yourself out about the grades as he provides several assignments worth of extra credit.
I'm not expecting an easy A at all. But it's not okay to discourage students to not fix their mistakes. He does give good feedback, but, he isn't my cup of tea, sorry.
He was harsh on my first writings. He left detailed notes to help me improve. I was able to use his suggestions on my future assignments and it really helped. I grew alot. The lectures were amazing and there is a ton of extra credit. I constantly was five to ten minutes late for class, he was very understanding. I should have read the novel.
He was a harsh grader due to his all-or-nothing grading policy. Even though I ended up with an A, I had to argue my grades on multiple occasions and repeatedly had to ask for feedback on my assignments because he didn't give it unless requested. He often was rude in emails and does not allow grammarly, just an FYI. WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN!
His feedback was very insightful and helped me grow. He offered line edits, audio files, and video files. It took me a couple of assignments to get in the flow. He responded to my emails promptly and always answered my questions. He does not allow AI. But my writing improved in his class.
Jason is a wonderful professor! As expected, so long as you follow the syllabus and show up on time, you'll pass with an easy A. I had him for Wintermester and the class turned out to be very fun as he provided great feedback in the short amount of time we had and truly cares about his students. (Salsa Verde's cabeza tacos are delicious!!)
very strict and to much homework dont recommend.
Class is very straightforward. He goes over the assignments in class. His feedback is very helpful. As long as you turn the assignments, it's a pretty easy A. No final exam, I wrote two essays in a three week class. Great class.
I really loved this class, Prof Carney takes pride in giving you detailed and specific advice for what you're lacking in your work, but he does it in a productive manner. With each new assignment I noticed myself doing better and better- not to mention he is funny as hell.
His lectures are the lists of bullet points of "big words" with no detailed descriptions, specifics, or examples. His assignment instructions are ambiguous with no specific names, numbers, and formats. His rubrics have only a point system and no clear grading guidelines. His replies to my inquiries were often blunt, dismissive, or argumentative.
He has100 or 0 point policy. If you make small mistakes, he gives you zero. His assignment instructions are always so vague. I had a 4.0 GPA and making sense out of his instructions was impossible. Once he gave 3 confusing instruction sheets, which were also conflicted with his feedback. His communication is blunt, condescending, and hostile.
He made things more interesting and gave credit for in-class participation. He had some confusing instructions and didn't explain things to the point that I was confident.
It isn't hard at all, as long as you do the work and attend to class. He gets through everything clearly, has of different kinds of assignments that are fun, connecting with the students on various topics and tells his own stories to really set depth into what we're working on. He's really fun and understanding and willing to talk things out.
Amazing instructor. Provides plenty of opportunities for extra credit, as well as second-chance assignments. Answers emailed questions in under 30 minutes. Provides examples and explanations on how to do assignments well. Sets assignments in the first month of the semester to be free points, so that even problematic students can pass easily.
That he will help you the most in what you need, and he gave me a second chance when I needed it. That he helped me in ways outside of classes.
This Professor is so good- I highly recommend. He really cares about his students, and helps you to be engaged in the class- never a dull moment. He makes everything very easy and gives you clear instructions. Also, a lot of extra credit opportunities!
Great Professor! He gives many extra credit points and answers emails fast. Attendance is mandatory for his class. His assignments were fairly easy as long as you followed all the formatting.
Jason is AMAZING!! He's very understanding, so reach out if you need assistance. Attendance was mandatory for the Maymester. He has a no tolerance policy for plagiarism, even if it's accidental. For the assignments, listen to instructions he says in class. Overall, it was a great class. P.S. Check out Emelia's Tex Mex & Taqueria in The Colony, TX
Professor Carney heavily supports critical thinking and freedom of speech in the classroom. If anything, you'll expand your perspective to objectively view opposing arguments after this course. He is easily accessible via email. Both his teaching periods and discussion periods in class are highly engaging. Extra credit opportunities exist.
He sometimes is a little too "serious" with his feedback. He sounds like he doesn't want to hurt you, but actually ends up saying something discouraging when you have put time and effort into your paper. He is a strict grader. I would not recommend him again. His feedback sounds like you lack English skills. We are all learning new things.
He's a great English professor. He taught me a lot of skills that will be necessary for me to improve my essay writing ability. He allows for AI usage if you site and follow some rules. He's really concerned with making me a better writer. The feedback was detailed. I improved. Responded to all of my emails. He could use better lecture videos.
I really enjoyed this class. Jason Carney is funny, relatable, and down to earth, which made the learning environment comfortable and engaging. 5 Stars!!!!
Amazing professor. Thanks to him I improved a lot. If you want to get a good grade, put some work into your assignments, and you'll be fine. If I had another chance, I would take him again.
Don't recommend.
I took an online course this summer and it was excellent. The assignments all tied to the learning outcomes. The timeline was very clear. Emails were always returned in a timely manner by the professor. He answered every question. I learned a lot in this writing class. I like that he really expect students to write. He supports ethical AI.
Professor Carney is strict but fair. He will catch AI use, but if you're honest, he'll work with you instead of turning you in. He expects you to do your own writing but allows AI for research. His feedback is detailed, and you'll grow as a writer. Not a tough class if you actually work. Offers extra credit!!
He is a strict grader, so be ready to work hard, but he is very fair and thorough. You will learn a lot in his class because he explains clearly and gives detailed feedback on time. If you stay on top of the work, you'll benefit from his teaching style and with extra credit you can match up with good grade.
He let students use AI as long as you cite it. Tons of extra credit and second assignments. I had a couple of bad grades, but they were easy to overcome. Always responded to my emails. I liked what he said about my writing.
This class was one of the hardest classes I've ever had. Strict grading with little to no explanation for it, even when I reached out asking for help on something he told me I was doing wrong he didn't give me an answer instead told me to go back through the lectures again to figure it out myself.
I thought the class was very informative. I thought the writing assignments were incredibly easy to complete and the feedback was generally insightful. He returned my emails and answered questions. He AI proofs his instructions, so cheating doesn't go far.. take the time to look at the learning material and do the work. He cares about his students.
Overall, he is a good professor who seems to care greatly about his students' growth in writing. However, he disregards the fact that some students are not high school graduates with all the time in the world. He is tougher if you have a life outside of academics. I have 2 full-time jobs and am a full-time student, but extra credit makes up for it.
Easy course, tough professor. Has little to no sympathy for students who are trying to balance life and school, and appears to care only about the English major personalities. As a full-time student with two full-time jobs and one part-time job, who is trying to pursue a degree, he only makes my life harder.
What a great class! I took 1301 and 1302. I made A in both classes. His feedback is spot on. The assignments are easy to complete, he gives lots of free grades all or nothing grading. His feedback is incredibly helpful. He allows you to use AI if you document it. people who don't like him fail because they cheat was the experience in my class.
Great class. Easy work that Ties to the outcomes. I supplied ai writing for a couple of assessments and he gave me a chance to resubmit and did not fail me for cheating. I learned a lot in this class. Easy work load and due dates. Easily fit into my 50 hour work weeks. Do the writing it is an easy class
There's so much extra credit and assignments that he calls alternative. I think that means student choice. The assignments are simple. His feedback is pretty good. He responded to emails easy and informative.
I took his course in the Spring 2025 semester and it was fantastic! He was a phenomenal professor and it was an awesome and fun class.
Professor Carney is an entertaining, supportive, and encouraging professor. He always makes the lectures and assignments enjoyable for us to complete, and he provides opportunities for us to earn extra credit to improve our grade and pass his course.
He uses comedic profanity time to time and his lectures are very intriguing and informative, making the listener interested in hearing more.
Good. Answered my mayonnaise question swiftly and decisively. Edmond's Burgers 2919 W 15th St, Plano, TX 75075
Professor Carney was one of the best professors I've had. I passed this class with flying colors, not because of my grades but because of effort. He just wants you to do ur part and show that you care and he won't make anything difficult. He gives a lot of extra credit and second chances. He's funny, respected, and open minded. Not a harsh grader.
Professor Carney is by far the best professor I had. He takes into consideration that you're a college student who may be going through things outside of school, genuinely caring about his students. He's heavy on giving second chances and he jokes a lot so be prepared to laugh. The assignments are generally easy, just turn in your work!
He helped me improve English through class participation and supportive assignments. He offered alternative assignments and late submission options to boost grades. When I struggled with panic and depression, he took me to counseling himself. His kindness, flexibility, and fair grading made this class life-changing, helping me get back on track.
Torchy's Tacos, Chicken and Beef
Professor Carney was a wonderful professor. He is hilarious, and he will always answer your questions to make sure that you understand all the assignments. You have to try on your assignments and you will pass. Brisket taco from Velvet Taco OR if you like seafood Coco's Shrimp coconut shrimp toco with lime is so good. Take his class
Jason Carney is funny, engaging, and truly cares about his job and students. I really enjoyed his class, even at 8AM. You don't have to sacrifice a lot of your free time to complete assignments, the work load is reasonable. If you show up, pay attention and put in effort, you'll do well. If you're ever in Austin- Taqueria De Diez on Lamar.
He gave an insightful perspective on cheese content that inspired me to try dairy even though I am lactose intolerant. Try the Quesa-Birria Plate :D 3300 K Ave Suite 300, Plano, TX 75074.
In addition to answering questions, comments, and concerns about various condiments, cheeses, and other food products. He was extremely genuine and cared about each and every student in his class. His point based grading was unique to any other English course that I have taken, it gave me a clear picture of how close I was to my final grade.
I loved this class would take again. The class is full of extra credit, and he is a very light grader. Only about 5 essays total, and he will give u an A+ on papers that generally deserve a C.
Professor Carney is genuinely an amazing professor. He doesn't grade harshly. I love English, and its assignments bring out a different side in you. He goes through the first few essay assignments with great detail, essentially helping you write them. He is very kind and respects everyone. His class was the only class where I wanted to talk.
As long as you don't use AI you will pass this class with a B or higher.
My papers were definitely not the best, but he showed me grace and gave me the extra points even when I didn't deserve it. Feedback can be a bit vague, but overall, I think I would have enjoyed his class more had I taken it in person.
