Way too arrogant for his own good. He won't admit to making mistakes even if it's something as simple as mixing up assignment due dates. The midterm was waaaay too long and hard and when students complained, he somehow turned it around to make it our fault? "If you have to think, then you don't know it"...way to give us a chance!

Save yourself some grief & avoid this jerk at all costs! He thinks he's God's Gift to Economics but he needs to realize 90% of kids take this class for business! I hate him and hope his arrogance gets him fired! He needs a reality check and not try to prove how smart and wonderful he is! Jason- get a life and stop tryin to ruin your students' lives

Childs is interested in his subject, but doesn't explain it to beginners very clearly. When people ask for help in class, he tries to get them to answer their own questions. He probably would find higher level classes more interesting to teach... not sure if he actually likes teaching or not.

Awesome prof. He actually makes Economics interesting. He explains everything really well and won't move on to the next part until everyone understands the example he just did. The midterms are just the assignments with different #s. And if you do bad on the midterms, he will automatically re-weight your final to give you the highest possible mark.

He explains everything really well and if you don't understand it, he will go out of his way to make sure you do. AS a result of assignments and midterms, it feels like you are constantly doing homework in this class, but its all worth it and you will know what you are doing come finals time. He seems intimidating but really is not.

Wow this dude is a hard teacher! Avoid him at all costs! His mid-terms are sooo hard and long. If you don't understand something and you need help he is usually availiable for help. He will get you to answer your own question. I would take him if you absolutly have to take it otherwise stay away!

Jason is a great teacher (for the whole 1 week he subbed for our actual prof) for 401. He is always available for help, and if you do not understand things he will go out of his way to help. He can explain math in everyday english and will not just throw random crap at you. He goes through the entire process that it takes to explain the question

overall, he's a good prof, but Macroeconomics is a hard subject to wrap your head around. He wants the students to understand what they're doing, instead of just memorizing things. Although his assignments and midterms were killer, it was worth it for the final.

I had Jason as a professor 4 years back in New Brunswick. Teaching wise he is excellent and trully dedicates time for his students. I have taken 3 courses with him Econ 1023,2023,3023 and I would urge any one of you to take any of his classes.

I liked Jason the first week of class, but after that, I realized how hard of a prof he is. I don't recommend taking any economics courses with him. Economics is hard enough as it is, and he makes it seem like you are taking 302 (Intermediate). My boyfriend did very well in 201 and he was even frustrated with Jason's teaching!

Jason is a great prof. He is always in his office willing to help. Questions on both the midterm and final are off the problem sets. So do the problem sets and you will do well!!

Class was extremely fair, and was even given a re-write on the midterm. The material was presented clearly, and the midterm questions were taken right from the questions given in class. Anyone who was shocked by their grade didn't try hard enough. There was plenty of out-of-class help available to anyone who made the time.

Great prof. Probably one of the best teacher's that I've ever had. Makes the class fun and makes sure that you keep involved by randomly asking questions of people. Assignments are really easy, midterms have some easy questions some hard ones, final also was some hard questions some easy ones. Would definitely take a class from him again.

Awesome prof. Economics can be a very boring subject but i found that Dr. Childs made it very interesting. He was always willing to help with questions and assignments even if u asked for help not during his office hours and he was pretty much always available. The Exams where short enough so that you had time to re check your answers.

Really a great prof. If your interested in Econ or have to take it you should definitely take his class. He is really interested in his students success and provides a phenomenal level of help. Everything was made very clear and fun.

Honestly, I expected more after reading these reviews before choosing to take his class this semester. Yes he has a sense of humour, but I found his teaching methods a little annoying. The assignments are almost impossible to do from the examples he gives in class, and the exams are largely from the textbook, which is so dry and confusing.

Horrible, immature and childish. Doesn't take students seriously, his notes are unclear and make no sense, and his exams ask questions that are not covered in class. The fact that him and his TA's joke during exams and try to distract students really show how mature he is. His pathetic teaching style make simple concepts way more complicated.

Where are these good ratings coming from? I've never felt so uncomfortable in a class. He picks on students who ask questions, exam questions come out of nowhere and he acts very immature. Overall, I felt like I was apart of a big joke between him and his TAs and couldn't take this class or this man seriously. Avoid.

Frustrating. He tries really hard to make things clear for students but it ends up confusing them. It's impossible to take him seriously because he acts like a child around his TAs. If you don't care about how high your mark is and are just looking for an entertaining, passable class... this is for you. Otherwise, this is a GPA Killer.

Frankly you would make much better use of your time and money if you selected someone else as a mentor, because honestly, he sucks. Assignments are impossible to complete successfully without using wrong assumptions. Unless that's the point of his lessons. His mind is not focused and I would have done better to read online from bed.

Jason Childs was an excellent prof. I've hated all the Econ classes I've taken and he is by far the best Economics prof at the university. Attend class and you will do well. The only problem was it took a long time to get the assignments back. The final is worth a lot (using either grading scheme) but still the best Econ class you are going to get!

Great prof. Made me like economics. He makes everything simple to understand. Reading the textbook provides clarification but he makes majority of things easy to understand in his lectures. He isn't looking to fail anyone and is willing to help you if needed. Highly recommended!

Dr. Childs is amazing. He has a wealth of knowledge and stories that he imparts to students in a funny down-to-earth way. He tries very hard to involve students in the process and as a result makes remembering the material covered easier. His tests are very fair, he explains things well, he is always willing to help, and makes going to class fun

This prof is probably the best you'll get in economics. There are a couple of assignments, but his tests are really easy provided you study from your notes and focus on main stuff in the textbook. He is also funny and is very helpful!

Must attend class as he didn't post anything on urcourses, but his notes in class were very clear. Made sure to go at the classes pace, ensuring everyone had an understanding before he would move on. Midterms are easy as long as you study, final is a little harder but same thing, study and you will do great. Pretty funny guy, pretty laid back.

Great prof. Very funny if you understand his jokes and get his sense of humour. You should pass his class he makes everything very understandable and gives you all opportunities to succeed. he will help you understand it if you are having issues and even has office hours that he encourages you to go too. Read the textbook he wrote it.

This prof is not recommended if you are totally new to Economics the subject. Even though he does explain stuff to you, but he was making everything on the textbook sounds WAY TOO SIMPLE as he explains them, plus he doesn't really have a well structured lecture ALL THE TIME. Although he is entertaining and humorous, but he doesn't teach well.

Teaches straight from the textbook (which he also happened to write). Frustrated with the additional cost that came from buying an online access pass for his assignments. Exams were rather easy if you understood the foundations of what was being taught. Very rushed towards the end of semester and perhaps moved on from topics prematurely.

Jason was a really great prof, he seems a little scattered but cares that people understand material and is always willing to slow down and go over concepts again to make sure people got it. Textbook is easy to understand. Midterms and final are not that bad as long as you study.

Really passionate instructor. Makes for interesting discussion during class. Would 100% take another course from him. Compared to any other class I've ever taken, I don't think I checked my watch once during this class. If you get a chance to take a class with, take it!

Dr. Childs gained my total respect during this class - despite being polar opposites politically. He guides you to answers, doesn't cut down ideas, gets you to participate and also gives you the tools to pass the class. I had two econ electives and this one was my favourite course this semester. Deadly prof. Math dpt. needs a guy like this.

If you are new to Economics, do not take his class. The way he mark is frustrated, not clear and worth for student. Too much homework. Have to buy online access pass to do homework, 50 obo. Midterm and Final are tough and heavy. He did not tell any helpful information, you have to learn all from the beginning without which part should focus on.

Jason is alright I guess, I really thought I was failing his class bcos barely pass the 2 midterms but did well on the final I guess, and online assignment is mandatory for the course. Study everything from beg to end with no hint, do not know the main focus in final. Do econ lab take at least 2 hours per chapter. He is inspiration but so what? Both midterm and final is hard. Attend class to know what he teach about so at least you know what have in the midterm and final. Class is boring if not reading book before.

Jason was by far my favourite prof at the U of R. Took 201 and 202 with him and he genuinely wants you to get the concepts. However his exams were insanely difficult and had a low average overall, which is normal for intro Econ courses. If you put in the effort he gave his all to help you. Would love to take another course from him in the future.

If you are like me and like structured lectures then this prof is not for you. He does a sort of free form lecture that I had an incredibly hard time following. The online software that he peddles is one of worst I've ever had the displeasure of using. To show that I'm not a complete idiot, I currently have an 80% in my macro class.

Amazing instructor who's fully dedicated to his job. His lectures can be sometimes not well-structured, but he makes sure that all necessary material is covered. Even though attendance is not mandatory, it's better not to skip the classes as new material is covered every lecture.

Jason is a hilarious guy! He always made the class laugh in lectures. He doesn't post any notes online so you have to go to class to write down notes, and every lecture we learn new stuff. We had 2 midterms, online quizzes you did at your own pace, and the final. You definitely need the textbook and need to put time into this course.

Jason is an awesome prof. He doesnt post any slides so you have to join the classes regularly. Joining his class is too interesting. Throughout my first year he was the best prof that Ive ever had. After joining his micro class somehow I feel like i should do major in economics .

Jason is super knowledgable in what he teaches. He's a great guy and tries to make it easy. But when it comes down to the course material, it is super hard. His lectures were interesting enough but the content is dry. The textbook helped A LOT! First midterm class average was failing but second one was passing.

Professor Childs is one of the best teachers I've had and so far my favourite prof. His lectures are engaging, funny, and fairly easy to follow. Economics was a tough subject for me to wrap my head around but he was very encouraging and made time to answer my questions and catch me up on missed material. Be prepared to get challenged and have fun!

Jason is funny, passionate and gives engaging lectures. However, he doesn't respond to emails and goes very fast in his lectures. He prides himself on the fact that he is a hard prof and that he makes you work hard for the credit. He likes to consider himself as some sort of gatekeeper between you and your degree.

Words cannot describe my dislike. I found him to be rude and unavailable. He stated at the beginning he does not care how anyone does in his class. He makes it seem like he's above the rest. I went to his office for help and never felt so awkward and stupid, really felt belittled. Knowledge wise, he knows his sh*t just no respect for the guy.

I did not like his course as he goes very quickly through everything and has very high expectations. His exams were so hard and were unfair to students. Average for the 1st midterm was around 30% when I took his class. DO NOT RECOMMEND! There are much better econ profs out there that actually give fair grades and teach properly.

Child's is very knowledgeable in economics but his class has a few flaws. His midterms are seriously hard and make you apply things in ways you were never shown. The mastery points are tedious and take too long for what you get. If the class is doing well he makes the tests harder. Overall a terrible prof who is too difficult.

I genuinely liked Childs as a professor, however, this class was incredibly difficult. I enjoyed the subject but struggled with reaching the high expectations set by Childs. I respect him and his work, as he is knowledgeable about his area of study, but his class seemed needlessly difficult and punishing.

Do not recommend taking Econ 202 with Childs. He does not care whether his students pass or fail. For those of us who struggle with the subject of Economics, he is an awful prof. He uses extremely non-realistic goods and services in his examples in class which makes things hard to follow. Expects you to memorize like 50 different formulas.

He is a funny professor and is clearly very smart, however he assumes that his students have a background in economics despite this being an intro level course. He does not explain things clearly and goes through the material way too fast for us to understand. He went through an entire chapter in one day. Good thing we had a moderator to help.

Jason Childs has a very bright personality and is a genuine guy. However Jason has no clue how to teach an online class. He was not accessible outside of class hours and everything went through his TA. His lectures were fast paced and explained very little. He was not accommodating given the online class situation. Not a good prof for online Econ.

Jason was a pretty good professor. Definitely knew what he was talking about and was funny. His midterms were difficult but doable if you put a lot of work in. I like that you could earn 55 mastery points for 15% of your grade. Gives lots of hints for tests which are helpful. Definitely had to put in a lot of work for this class though!

He is definitely not a polite person, indeed has knowledge of what he teaches but struggles when it comes to how to teach especially in online classes, it goes worse. He assumes that his students have clear basics of econ and goes with great speed. usually laughs at students when they ask doubt. his slides are usually empty. uses PROCTORTRACK.

Jason is my fave econ prof. The lectures are really heavy and the textbook is of no use. He tries his best to help you understand and is open to questions. He's easily accessible out of class. He doesn't mind shifting the weight of an assignment or exam if you didn't do well on it. He genuinely cares for how well his students do.

It doesn't matter how well you know the material or studied if you're going to lose marks because of lazy delays caused by proctortrac. This useless app makes the entire test taking process a nightmare and I don't see why any prof who claims to care about their students would use this clunky program.

This course has the illusion of difficulty, the content is easy, and jason mainly just saunters through the whole thing at a mind-numbing pace. The real difficulty comes from doing 90 min worth of questions in 50min. The content is really easy but these time limits and awful proctortrak programs are what makes the exams difficult.

Take note of what his other reviews are saying - talks too fast, irrelevant to the topics, and from personal experience, rude. I went on to ask for advice and help the day before a midterm in regards to having an overwhelming week and he decides to tell me to get help from a professional counsellor instead.

It's not that the material is hard, in fact, you can learn all of this in Khan Academy for free. The problem is that everything is extremely tedious and a massive time waster. Not worth your time or money. Exams are brutal for no reason. Impossible to get above an 80%

The most difficult 200-level course in the entire business department. I studied for weeks in advance and still failed questions. He makes it look easy in lecture, and the textbook (which pays him btw) is too simple for the complexity of the questions. I lost marks on a question because I don't drink and therefore don't know what a molson Cdn is.

So many notes that I took were meaningless, because Jason cares more about small details and hypotheticals than actually learning the concepts. It gets so confusing trying to read his mind and wondering what he wants out of you. Whats worse is that he is completely unresponsive to feedback. Its always your fault you're not doing well in his mind.

Getting an 80 in this course is IMPOSSIBLE. This is the hardest business class I have ever taken. I studied several weeks in advance, read every chapter, and took diligent notes, just to get 60s and 70s on exams. Even the meme assignment was stressful. JC is paid off by Pearson too so expect the mastery points to not work. He cannot teach.

Jason will claim the course is about understanding, but really its about making a simple scenario as complex as he can. There is never enough time to fully answer the questions. 300 and 400 level courses are not this difficult. Also he uses Proctortrack which will wreck your computer or make a strange noise the whole time.

I guess since the course was over and paid for he decided to not bother answering my emails and ran away. No amount of effort will get you above 79.999%

Im one who generally enjoys economics but this class was effing hard! He is very passionate about the subject but it seems like he expects all his students to be ECON majors with the same passion, even though its a mandatory class for BBA. A ton of work outside of class. Exam questions were beyond what we learned in class. Textbook is no help.

If you don't understand you can just ask him about it and he will try to explain it another way. He is hilarious, I would recommend taking him

He is ALRIGHT. All of your marks are going to come from your exams, You have to complete 55 mini exams called mastery points they are worth a small portion of your final grade. I personally don't think we get enough time for exams, very rushed. He also has a hard time staying on track and lectures are all over the place, so READ THE TEXTBOOK.

Getting a good grade doesn't mean the class itself is good. The material is rushed, and Jason literally ghosts you after the course is over. The exams are full of curve balls and trick questions that seem more to test your english comprehension more than actual economics. I've taken 300 level science courses that were easier. Lectures only deal with easy problems, despite the final solely consisting of trick problems and complex questions. If you're behind, you fail. If you're ahead, you're still behind. Being paid off by pearson to shill their useless products doesn't help either.

Dr. Childs is a professor who really embraces the idea of learning through pushing his students understanding. Although, at times his personality can be polarizing I would highly recommend him to any students who have a top priority of furthering their understanding in economics. Personally, I feel Jason is one of the best the U of R has to offer.

Professor Childs teaches like a child tells you about their day, sort of a jumble of information which is thrown at you out of order with a whole lot of enthusiasm. He grades off of a few tests which were terribly worded. Far too little time to finish them, and zero practice questions apart from the textbook, which aren't very similar to his tests.

I took this class in my first year at university in the fall semester. I enjoyed the professor and the way he taught the class, attendance isn't mandatory but if you show up and pay attention you will not have to read the textbook. But you will still need the textbook for the in-class quizzes done every Friday to make sure you understand the class.

I hated the class, the lectures were wordy and sucked. Examples in class were overly complex. Midterms were multiple choice and the most annoying word problems ever. Had to do these mastery points, worst practice I've ever had, to the point I lost practice doing them. Final is 70 multiple choice and 30 marks short answer. DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.

This prof is one of the worst profs Ive ever had in the entirety of my university career. He prides himself on being an extremely hard prof and says most people don't end up passing. The in class work is completely different from the tests, which are made entirely of make your own questions and solve them yourself questions. DON"T TAKE HIS CLASSES.

I loved Jason... I disagree with many of these ratings. yes you have to come to class but you are in uni so go to class. Jason engages with students, lets you ask the stupid questions and wants to make it make sense to you. you do have to put in the effort, the Master points are annoying because there's a lot but they are like the test questions.

Jason is hilarious, never a dull moment in his Econ class. He's a pretty scattered lecturer, so make sure you have a good method of writing notes. he doesn't teach with slides. Midterm and final was very reasonable! Mastery points are a pain, but worth the bonus marks. Take Childs and you'll never fall asleep in class, he's truly passionate.

Jason is a nice guy, but not a good prof. He needs to structure his lectures and make them more understandable. He does not simplify and uses extremely hard to understand formulas. He is enthusiastic which helps but definitely needs to implement some structure and simplify his course as it is entry level.

He is a great professor, if you are willing to put in the effort required and do not mind reading quite a bit outside of class, you will do just fine. I'm surprised by many of these ratings. I personally really enjoyed Jason as my macroeconomics professor. He is very funny and engaging, and allows any stupid questions without judgement. However, I strongly recommend showing up to the lectures, paying attention, reading the textbook, and doing the Mastery Points in order to pass the class.
